RESUMO

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been clearly identified as a hazardous chemical pollutant that seriously affects food safety and human health. In order to develop a rapid, accurate and efficient H2S tracking method, this work propose a strategy based on indicator displacement assays (IDA). A water-soluble histidine-modified perylene diimide fluorescent probe was synthesized by a one-step method, and the probe can form supramolecular aggregates in the presence of Cd2+. There will be a fluorescence transformation of probe, caused by the change of the state of aggregation and adjusted by various concentration of S2-, which can achieve the fluorescence detection of S2-. The limit of detection is as low as 0.41 µmol/L. Particularly worth mentioning is that the probe in this work can be recycled for at least 5 times, which is environmentally friendly and economical. Finally, this method was applied in three kinds of vegetables and monosodium glutamate samples.

RESUMO

Phytoremediation is a green technology for heavy metal removal from contaminated soil, and its remediation efficiency and economic feasibility in field trial should be evaluated before large-scale application. However, there is still lacking relevant analysis, especially for phytoremediation with different cropping patterns. In the present study, we performed phytoremediation on slightly Cd-contaminated farmland soil via three cropping systems, i.e. Sedum alfredii monoculture, oilseed rape monoculture, and S. alfredii-oilseed rape intercropping. Dry weights of S. alfredii and oilseed rape were both enhanced under intercropping pattern, while the highest total Cd extraction amount (148 g ha-1) were observed under S. alfredii monoculture. Furtherly, a cost-benefit analysis via Monta Carlo simulation in a ten-year lifetime was conducted. The benefits of S. alfredii monoculture and intercropping schemes would offset the total costs in 6 and 8 years, respectively. S. alfredii monoculture achieved a higher net present value of 1.88 × 104 US$ as compared with intercropping (9.53 × 103 US$). These results indicate that S. alfredii monoculture scheme could be a promising phytoremediation strategy for slightly Cd-contaminated soil owing to better remediation efficiency and economic feasibility. Moreover, the enhancement in mechanization level and the reduction of seedling cost could further improve its economic viability.

RESUMO

Biochar, produced as a by-product of pyrolysis/gasification of waste biomass, shows great potential to reduce the environment impact, address the climate change issue, and establish a circular economy model. Despite the promising outlook, the research on the benefits of biochar remains highly debated. This has been attributed to the heterogeneity of biochar itself, with its inherent physical, chemical and biological properties highly influenced by production variables such as feedstock types and treating conditions. Hence, to enable meaningful comparison of results, establishment of an agreed international standard to govern the production of biochar for specific uses is necessary. In this study, we analyzed four key uses of biochar: 1) in agriculture and horticulture, 2) as construction material, 3) as activated carbon, and 4) in anaerobic digestion. Then the guidelines for the properties of biochar, especially for the concentrations of toxic heavy metals, for its environmental friendly application were proposed in the context of Singapore. The international status of the biochar industry code of practice, feedback from Singapore local industry and government agencies, as well as future perspectives for the biochar industry were explained.
