RESUMO

The rapid economic development leads to excessive consumption of fossil energy, resulting in a large number of carbon emissions, which makes the sustainable development of China's economy and society face great challenges. Under the background of global warming and environmental deterioration, developing low-carbon economy has become an inevitable choice for China to change its development model and improve its international competitiveness. Technological progress is the first driving force to promote economic growth. However, the influence degree and mechanism of technological progress on the development of low-carbon economy are still unclear. Based on this, the paper proposes the concept of low-carbon GDP, which is used to measure the low-carbon economic development of 30 Chinese provinces. Then, the panel fixed effect model is used to study the effect degree and mechanism of technological progress on low-carbon GDP and the moderating effect of other factors on the relationship between them. The results show that, first, economically developed provinces and regions have higher per capita low-carbon GDP and low-carbon GDP index, but the speed and quality of low-carbon economic development are not necessarily higher. Second, technological progress can promote the growth of low-carbon GDP and make greater contributions to resources-poor regions. Third, improving local education can make technological progress more effective in low-carbon economic development. China needs to upgrade technological development by developing new and high-tech technologies, promoting new urbanization and strengthening education in order to promote low-carbon economic development.

RESUMO

AIMS: To analyse the genome-wide association study (GWAS) data of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) in order to develop a risk score for the genetic effects on T1D risk and age at diagnosis in the Taiwanese population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We selected 610 patients with T1D and 2511 healthy individuals from an electronic medical record database of more than 300 000 individuals with genetic information, analysed their GWAS data, and developed a polygenic risk score (PRS). RESULTS: The PRS, based on 149 selected single-nucleotide polymorphisms, could effectively predict T1D risk. A PRS increase was associated with increased T1D risk (odds ratio [OR] 2.09, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.72-2.55). Moreover, a 1-unit increase in standardized T1D PRS decreased the age at diagnosis by 0.74 years. Combined PRS and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) DQA1*03:02-DQA1*05:01 genotypes could accurately predict T1D risk. In multivariable models, HLA variants and PRS were independent risk factors for T1D risk (OR 3.76 [95% CI 1.54-9.16] and 1.71 [95% CI 1.37-2.13] for HLA DQA1*03:02-DQA1*05:01 and PRS, respectively). In a limited study population of those aged ≤18 years, PRS remained significantly associated with T1D risk. The association between T1D PRS and age at diagnosis was more obvious among males and patients aged ≤18 years. CONCLUSIONS: Polygenic risk score and HLA variations enable personalized risk estimates, enhance newborn screening efficiency for ketoacidosis prevention, and addresses the gap in data on T1D prediction in isolated Asian populations.

RESUMO

For the industrial-scale production of useful enzymes by microorganisms, technological development is required for overcoming a technical bottleneck represented by poor efficiency in the induction of enzyme gene expression and secretion. In this study, we evaluated the potential of a non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet to improve the production efficiency of cellulolytic enzymes in Neurospora crassa, a filamentous fungus. The total activity of cellulolytic enzymes and protein concentration were significantly increased (1.1~1.2 times) in media containing Avicel 24-72 h after 2 and 5 min of plasma treatment. The mRNA levels of four cellulolytic enzymes in fungal hyphae grown in media with Avicel were significantly increased (1.3~17 times) 2-4 h after a 5 min of plasma treatment. The levels of intracellular NO and Ca2+ were increased in plasma-treated fungal hyphae grown in Avicel media after 48 h, and the removal of intracellular NO decreased the activity of cellulolytic enzymes in media and the level of vesicles in fungal hyphae. Our data suggest that plasma treatment can promote the transcription and secretion of cellulolytic enzymes into the culture media in the presence of Avicel (induction condition) by enhancing the intracellular level of NO and Ca2+.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine whether the pulmonary MR imaging with free-breathing radial 3D fat-suppressed T1-weighted gradient echo (r-VIBE) sequence can detect lung lesions and display lesion profiles with an accuracy comparable to that of computed tomography (CT), which is the reference standard in this study. POPULATION: Sixty-three consecutive patients were prospectively enrolled between October, 2016 and March, 2017. All the patients received both 3T MRI scanning with a free-breathing r-VIBE sequence and chest standard CT. Morphologic features of lesions were evaluated by two radiologists with a 5-point system. Chest standard CT were used as reference standard. Weighted kappa analysis and chi-squared test were used to determine both inter-observer agreement and inter-method agreement. RESULTS: A total of 210 solid pulmonary nodules or masses and 1 ground-glass nodule were detected by CT. Compared to CT, r-VIBE correctly detected 95.7% of pulmonary nodules, including 100% of detection rate with diameter greater than 6 mm, 92.3% of pulmonary nodules with diameter between 4 and 6 mm, and 83.3% of pulmonary nodules with diameter less than 4 mm The inter-method agreements between r-VIBE and standard-dose CT were either "substantial" or "excellent" in the evaluation of following features of pulmonary nodules with diameter more than 10mm: including lobulation, spiculation, convergence of vessels, bubble-like attenuation, cavitation and mediastinal lymph node enlargement (0.605≤K≤1.000; P<0.0001). However, K values for inter-method agreements were significant but "moderate" or "poor" for evaluating pleural tag, halo, and calcification (0.355≤ K≤0.451; P<0.0001). CONCLUSION: The use of pulmonary MR imaging with r-VIBE showed high detection rate of pulmonary nodules and inter-method agreement with CT. It is also useful for nodule morphologic assessment.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the associations between intrapulmonary vascular volume (IPVV) depicted on inspiratory and expiratory CT scans and disease severity in COPD patients, and to determine which CT parameters can be used to predict IPVV. Methods: We retrospectively collected 89 CT examinations acquired on COPD patients from an available database. All subjects underwent both inspiratory and expiratory CT scans. We quantified the IPVV, airway wall thickness (WT), the percentage of the airway wall area (WA%), and the extent of emphysema (LAA%-950) using an available pulmonary image analysis tool. The underlying relationship between IPVV and COPD severity, which was defined as mild COPD (GOLD stage I and II) and severe COPD (GOLD stage III and IV), was analyzed using the Student's t-test (or Mann-Whitney U-test). The correlations of IPVV with pulmonary function tests (PFTs), LAA%-950, and airway parameters for the third to sixth generation bronchus were analyzed using the Pearson or Spearman's rank correlation coefficients and multiple stepwise regression. Results: In the subgroup with only inspiratory examinations, the correlation coefficients between IPVV and PFT measures were -0.215 ~ -0.292 (p < 0.05), the correlation coefficients between IPVV and WT3-6 were 0.233 ~ 0.557 (p < 0.05), and the correlation coefficient between IPVV and LAA%-950 were 0.238 ~ 0.409 (p < 0.05). In the subgroup with only expiratory scan, the correlation coefficients between IPVV and PFT measures were -0.238 ~ -0.360 (p < 0.05), the correlation coefficients between IPVV and WT3-6 were 0.260 ~ 0.566 (p < 0.05), and the correlation coefficient between IPVV and LAA%-950 were 0.241 ~ 0.362 (p < 0.05). The multiple stepwise regression analyses demonstrated that WT were independently associated with IPVV (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The expiratory CT scans can provide a more accurate assessment of COPD than the inspiratory CT scans, and the airway wall thickness maybe an independent predictor of pulmonary vascular alteration in patients with COPD.

RESUMO

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the emphysema index (EI) in distinguishing chronic bronchitis (CB) from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and its role, combined with the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) score, in the evaluation of COPD. Methods: A total of 92 patients with CB and 277 patients with COPD were enrolled in this study. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were analyzed to evaluate whether the EI can preliminarily distinguish chronic bronchitis from COPD. Considering the heterogeneity of COPD, there might be missed diagnosis of some patients with bronchitis type when differentiating COPD patients only by EI. Therefore, patients with COPD were classified according to the CAT score and EI into four groups: Group 1 (EI < 16%, CAT < 10), Group 2 (EI < 16%, CAT ≥ 10), Group 3 (EI ≥ 16%, CAT < 10), and Group 4 (EI ≥ 16%, CAT ≥ 10). The records of pulmonary function and quantitative computed tomography findings were retrospectively analyzed. Results: ROC curve analysis showed that EI = 16.2% was the cutoff value for distinguishing COPD from CB. Groups 1 and 2 exhibited significantly higher maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV) percent predicted (pred), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC), maximal midexpiratory flow of 25-75% pred, carbon monoxide-diffusing capacity (DLCO)/alveolar ventilation (VA), FEV1 % pred (p ≤ 0.013), and maximal expiratory flow 50% pred (all p < 0.05) than Group 4. FEV1/FVC and DLCO/VA were significantly lower in Group 3 than in Group 2 (p=0.002 and p < 0.001, respectively). The residual volume/total lung capacity was higher in Group 3 than in Groups 1 and 2 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The combination of EI and CAT was effective in the evaluation of COPD.

RESUMO

Emerging pollutants occur in the environment, which has become a pressing issue for environmental research. In order to comprehensively screen potential polar organic pollutants in surface water of Wujin and Yixing in the Taihu Lake Basin, nontarget screening was carried out by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) and time of flight mass spectrometry(TOF-MS). Screened by accurate mass, isotope distribution, and MS/MS information, 162 organic compounds were identified, including 46 pesticides, 34 drugs, 8 personal care products, and 27 additives; 17 organic synthetic intermediates and 30 metabolites, 45 of which have been verified by reference standards. Through the quantitative analysis of 42 pollutants and ecological risk assessment of 3 trophic model species, it was found that 25 pollutants posed medium risk while 12 pollutants presented high risk. Nontarget screening can be used to identify potential pollutants with no prior information or standards. It is not only fast, accurate, and has high analytical flux, but also provides an important basis for subsequent ecological risk assessment.

RESUMO

Nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) are important pollutants with carcinogenic effects present in PM2.5. To analyze the pollution characteristics and sources of NPAHs, 14 samples of PM2.5 were collected in Nanjing from November 2017 to March 2018. The results showed that, 2,8-dinitrodibenzothiophene (743 pg·m-3), 2, 7-dinitrofluorene (331 pg·m-3), 9-nitroanthracene (326 pg·m-3), 3-nitrofluoranthene (217 pg·m-3), and 1,8-dinitropyrene (193 pg·m-3) were dominant, and the detection concentrations notably varied between seasons; the highest concentrations occurred in winter (3082 pg·m-3) followed by autumn (1553 pg·m-3) and spring (1218 pg·m-3). The ratio of nitrofluoranthene and 1-nitropyrene concentrations, and 9-nitroanthracene and 1-nitropyrene concentrations, indicated that the main sources of NPAHs in the PM2.5 of Nanjing were photooxidation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and biomass burning. NPAHs were more typically associated with smaller particles, which further indicated that secondary formation is an important source. The current carcinogenic risk of NPAHs in PM2.5 in Nanjing is controllable, and dinitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons represent the highest level of risk. The data presented in this study provide important baseline information that can inform the management of risks associated with NPAHs in PM2.5 in Nanjing.

RESUMO

For the field detection problems of critical quality attribute(CQA) of moisture content in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) manufacturing process, big brand TCM Tongren Niuhuang Qingxin Pills were used as the carrier, to establish a moisture content NIR field detection model with or without cellophane in real world production with use of near infrared(NIR) spectroscopy combined with stoichiometry. With the moisture content determined by drying method as reference value, the partial least square method(PLS) was used to analyze the correlation between the spectrum and the moisture reference value. Then the spectral pretreatment methods were screened and optimized to further improve the accuracy and stability of the model. The results showed that the best quantitative model was developed by the spectral data pretreatment of standard normal variate(SNV) with the latent variable factor number of 2 and 7 of Tongren Niuhuang Qingxin Pills with or without cellophane samples. The prediction coefficient of determination(R_(pre)~2) and standard deviation of prediction(RMSEP) of the model with cellophane samples were 0.765 7 and 0.157 2%; R_(pre)~2 and RMSEP of the model without cellophane samples were 0.772 2 and 0.207 8%. The NIR quantitative models of moisture content of Tongren Niuhuang Qingxin Pills with and without cellophane both showed good predictive performance to realize the rapid, accurate and non-destructive quantitative analysis of moisture content in such pills, and provide a method for the field quality control of the critical chemical attributes of moisture in the manufacturing of big brand TCM.

RESUMO

Identification of critical quality attribute(CQA) is crucial in quality control of Tongren Niuhuang Qingxin Pills(TRNHQXP). In this study, 661 active components in TRNHQXP were selected by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(LC-MS) and network pharmacology based on reported data and TCMSP, BATMAN-TCM, and TCMID databases, as well as mass spectrometry data, and 1 413 targets of the active components were obtained through SwissTargetPrediction. The 152 potential targets obtained from the intersection of predicted targets with 456 stroke targets underwent functional enrichment analysis by Metascape. The 27 Chinese medicinals in TRNHQXP were divided into four sets according to efficacies. Thirty-seven key targets in the blood-activating and stasis-resolving set and 41 in the tonifying set were screened out. On the basis of these potential key targets, 137 potential key CQA of TRNHQXP for stroke were reversely predicted. This study revealed the possible mechanism of TRNHQXP in treating stroke and established a modular identification method for the potential CQA of big brand traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) based on efficacies and chemical properties. Consequently, the CQA of TRNHQXP were identified by this method, which has provided a reference for the following experimental studies of CQA.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This retrospective clinical study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of different types of incisor movements with clear aligners in the sagittal plane. METHODS: Pretreatment and posttreatment cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were collected from 69 patients who underwent nonextraction treatment with clear aligners (Invisalign; Align Technology, San Jose, Calif). Integrated 3-dimensional models of the virtual incisor position (ClinCheck; Align Technology) and the posttreatment incisor position (from posttreatment CBCT scans) were superimposed over the pretreatment position (from pretreatment CBCT scans) using Mimics software (Materialise, Leuven, Belgium). On the basis of the location of the rotation center, incisors showing pure tipping (>10°), controlled tipping (>10°), translation (>1 mm), or torque (>10°) movements were selected. Efficacy was determined by comparing the predicted and achieved incisor movement, and differences with efficacy were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Shapiro-Wilk tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS: In measurements for 231 incisors, the mean efficacy of incisor movements in the sagittal plane was 55.58%. The most and least predictable movements were pure tipping (72.48%) and torque (35.21%), respectively. Labial root movement was significantly more predictable than lingual root movement, and labial movement of the mandibular incisors was significantly easier than that of the maxillary incisors. The type of tooth movement achieved was different from the type designed. CONCLUSIONS: The efficacy of incisor movement in the sagittal plane using clear aligners varies with designed movement type, and labial root movement appears to be more accurate than the lingual root movement. The biomechanics of clear aligners remains to be further elucidated to achieve more predictable treatment results.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility of T1 and T2-mapping techniques in evaluating early Type 2 diabetic cataracts. METHODS: Totally, 28 patients with Type 2 diabetes was prospectively collected, and 28 non-diabetic patients were collected as control group. All patients included had ophthalmological exploration and all patients underwent orbital MRI examination with T1 and T2-mapping on a Siemens-Skyra 3.0T scanner. T1 and T2 values of the lens nucleus were measured by region of interest (ROI) method based on Siemens-Syngo workstation. Two sample t-test was used to analyze the differences between groups. Pearson correlations were calculated between relaxation time (T1, T2) and clinical variables, such as fasting glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin etc. p < 0.01 was used to determine statistical significance. RESULTS: In Type 2 diabetes group, the T1 value was 626.7 ± 56.8, T2 value was 29.4 ± 5.6. In non-diabetic group, the T1 value was 581.6 ± 64.7, T2 value was 24.8 ± 8.6. The T1 and T2 values of the lens in diabetic group were significantly higher than those in control group (p < 0.01, T1 value: 626.7 ± 56.8 vs 581.6 ± 64.7; T2 value: 29.4 ± 5.6 vs 24.8 ± 8.6). The T1 and T2 values of lens in diabetic patients were significantly correlated with glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and the correlation coefficients were 0.502 and 0.396, respectively. CONCLUSION: T1 and T2-mapping technique can sensitively reflect the alterative relaxation time of lens in diabetic patients. This technique can find abnormal changes earlier than slit lamp, and may be effective diagnostic methods for early lens disease. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: T1 and T2-mapping techniques may be effective diagnostic methods for early lens disease, which can detect abnormal changes earlier than slit lamp examination.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The metabolic syndrome (MetS) epidemic is associated with economic development, lifestyle transition and dysbiosis of gut microbiota, but these associations are rarely studied at the population scale. Here, we utilised the Guangdong Gut Microbiome Project (GGMP), the largest Eastern population-based gut microbiome dataset covering individuals with different economic statuses, to investigate the relationships between the gut microbiome and host physiology, diet, geography, physical activity and socioeconomic status. RESULTS: At the population level, 529 OTUs were significantly associated with MetS. OTUs from Proteobacteria and Firmicutes (other than Ruminococcaceae) were mainly positively associated with MetS, whereas those from Bacteroidetes and Ruminococcaceae were negatively associated with MetS. Two hundred fourteen OTUs were significantly associated with host economic status (140 positive and 74 negative associations), and 157 of these OTUs were also MetS associated. A microbial MetS index was formulated to represent the overall gut dysbiosis of MetS. The values of this index were significantly higher in MetS subjects regardless of their economic status or geographical location. The index values did not increase with increasing personal economic status, although the prevalence of MetS was significantly higher in people of higher economic status. With increased economic status, the study population tended to consume more fruits and vegetables and fewer grains, whereas meat consumption was unchanged. Sedentary time was significantly and positively associated with higher economic status. The MetS index showed an additive effect with sedentary lifestyle, as the prevalence of MetS in individuals with high MetS index values and unhealthy lifestyles was significantly higher than that in the rest of the population. CONCLUSIONS: The gut microbiome is associated with MetS and economic status. A prolonged sedentary lifestyle, rather than Westernised dietary patterns, was the most notable lifestyle change in our Eastern population along with economic development. Moreover, gut dysbiosis and a Western lifestyle had an additive effect on increasing MetS prevalence.

RESUMO

To better understand phthalate esters (PAEs) pollution in key areas of Taihu Lake, water and sediment samples were collected for content analysis. The concentrations of ∑PAEs in water samples from wet, dry, and normal seasons ranged 1.6-11.2 µg·L-1 (mean:3.68 µg·L-1), nd-6.21 µg·L-1 (mean:1.3 µg·L-1), and nd-1.72 µg·L-1 (mean:0.48 µg·L-1), respectively. No differences were found between upstream and downstream samples. DEHP was the predominant component in water samples, whereas DBP exceeded the national surface water environmental quality standards. The total PAE concentration in the sediment ranged between 0.74 and 6.90 µg·g-1 (mean:2.64 µg·g-1), with DBP and DEHP the predominant PAEs. The risk quotient (RQ) results showed that DBP and DEHP contributed the most potentially adverse effects to the aquatic environment in the key areas. The contents of PAEs in sediment were all less than the ERLs, thus posing no significant threat to aquatic organisms. The overall level of PAEs in the study area was moderate compared to those in other areas, including rivers, lakes, and estuaries from cities worldwide. Industrial pollution and urban activities are the major sources of PAEs in the aquatic environment of key areas of Taihu Lake.

RESUMO

This study examined the psychometric properties of motor praxis using a large school-based sample of children (n=239). We developed and evaluated the construct validity of a motor praxis assessment using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). A model with four latent variables was evaluated for goodness of fit. CFA established that the scale was multifactorial and supported the four-factor model (motor imagery, verbal gesture production, imitative gesture production and knowledge of object-use). The internal consistency, inter-rater reliability and concurrent validity of the praxis assessment mostly demonstrated good to excellent results for the full scale and the subscales. The motor praxis demonstrated an ontogenic progression in 6-, 7- and 8-year-olds, suggesting a developmental trend during these ages, but with the exception of gestural representation on imitation. Implications for motor development and clinical evaluation are discussed herein in relation to the four instruments.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the image quality improvement and noise reduction in routine dose, non-enhanced chest CT imaging by using a new generation adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASIR-V) in comparison with ASIR algorithm. METHODS: 30 patients who underwent routine dose, non-enhanced chest CT using GE Discovery CT750HU (GE Healthcare, Waukesha, WI) were included. The scan parameters included tube voltage of 120 kVp, automatic tube current modulation to obtain a noise index of 14HU, rotation speed of 0.6 s, pitch of 1.375:1 and slice thickness of 5 mm. After scanning, all scans were reconstructed with the recommended level of 40%ASIR for comparison purpose and different percentages of ASIR-V from 10% to 100% in a 10% increment. The CT attenuation values and SD of the subcutaneous fat, back muscle and descending aorta were measured at the level of tracheal carina of all reconstructed images. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was calculated with SD representing image noise. The subjective image quality was independently evaluated by two experienced radiologists. RESULTS: For all ASIR-V images, the objective image noise (SD) of fat, muscle and aorta decreased and SNR increased along with increasing ASIR-V percentage. The SD of 30% ASIR-V to 100% ASIR-V was significantly lower than that of 40% ASIR (p < 0.05). In terms of subjective image evaluation, all ASIR-V reconstructions had good diagnostic acceptability. However, the 50% ASIR-V to 70% ASIR-V series showed significantly superior visibility of small structures when compared with the 40% ASIR and ASIR-V of other percentages (p < 0.05), and 60% ASIR-V was the best series of all ASIR-V images, with a highest subjective image quality. The image sharpness was significantly decreased in images reconstructed by 80% ASIR-V and higher. CONCLUSION: In routine dose, non-enhanced chest CT, ASIR-V shows greater potential in reducing image noise and artefacts and maintaining image sharpness when compared to the recommended level of 40%ASIR algorithm. Combining both the objective and subjective evaluation of images, non-enhanced chest CT images reconstructed with 60% ASIR-V have the highest image quality. Advances in knowledge: This is the first clinical study to evaluate the clinical value of ASIR-V in the same patients using the same CT scanner in the non-enhanced chest CT scans. It suggests that ASIR-V provides the better image quality and higher diagnostic confidence in comparison with ASIR algorithm.

RESUMO

Temperature and photoperiod are proximate environmental factors that have an important influence on the morphological, physiological and behavioral adjustments animals performance du-ring seasonal acclimatization. In this study, the effects of temperature and photoperiod on phenotypic flexibility in body mass, energy budget and digestive tract morphology in the Chinese bulbul (Pycnonotus sinensis) were examined, and the relationship between energy budget and digestive tract morphology was analyzed. Twelve male and sixteen female Chinese bulbuls were randomly assigned into 4 experimental groups so that each group was comprised of three males and four females. The groups were: 1) a warm and long photoperiod (30 ℃, 16 light: 8 dark) group, 2) a warm and short photoperiod (30 ℃, 8 light: 16 dark) group, 3) a cold and long photoperiod (10 ℃, 16 light:8 dark) group, and 4) a cold and short photoperiod (10 ℃, 8 light: 16 dark) group. Each group was acclimated to its respective temperature and photoperiod for 4 weeks. Birds in the cold temperature and short photoperiod group underwent a significant increase in body mass, gross energy intake (GEI) and digestible energy intake (DEI) compared to the other three groups, and there was a significant interaction between temperature and photoperiod on gross energy intake and diges-tible energy intake. The mass of the stomach, small intestine, rectum, and total digestive tract, all increased significantly in cold temperature treatment groups compared to those acclimated to a relatively warm temperature. There was a significant, positive correlation between GEI and DEI resi-duals and those of the length and dry mass of the small intestine and total digestive tract. These results suggested that the Chinese bulbul met the increased energy demands of winter (colder tempe-ratures and reduced foraging time due to shorter day-length) by increasing its body mass, digestible energy intake and digestive tract size.

RESUMO

A mathematical model was developed for the design of microalgae-based biodiesel production system by systematically integrating all the production stages and strain properties. Through the hypothetical case study, the model suggested the most economical system configuration for the selected microalgae strains from the available processes at each stage, thus resulting in the cheapest biodiesel production cost, S$2.66/kg, which is still higher than the current diesel price (S$1.05/kg). Interestingly, the microalgae strain properties, such as lipid content, effective diameter and productivity, were found to be one of the major factors that significantly affect the production cost as well as system configuration.

RESUMO

No study has tested the reliability and validity of the revised Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90-R) for patients with alopecia areata (AA), and few have used it to evaluate the mental health of AA patients. To assess the psychological status in Chinese AA patients using the SCL-90-R, and to evaluate its reliability and validity, the psychological status of 168 patients and 100 controls was evaluated with the Chinese-version SCL-90-R. From this study, we found that The Global Severity Index and nine subscale scores on the SCL-90-R were significantly higher in AA patients than that in the controls. Moreover, The Global Severity Index and nine subscale scores on the SCL-90-R were associated with disease duration, age of onset, sex and type of AA. In addition, the SCL-90-R presented good internal consistency (whole scale α = 0.98 and split-half coefficient = 0.95). The intercorrelations between the nine subscales and their correlations with the total scale were 0.58-0.93. Factor analysis produced 22 factors with eigenvalues more than 1.0; the first factor explained 33.88% of the variance. Only hostility and paranoid ideation merged into one factor. Taken together, our data indicated that Chinese AA patients demonstrate greater psychopathology than healthy controls. The SCL-90-R can be used to assess global psychological distress in AA patients with good reliability and validity.
