RESUMO

Shore power (SP) is widely recognized as an efficient strategy for reducing air pollution in port areas. Unfortunately, the adoption of SP has been relatively low, resulting in limited emission reductions and financial losses. To address these challenges, this paper focuses on enhancing the utilization rate of SP, which is meaningful for emission control and environmental protection. This paper combines system dynamics with a study of the benefits of SP, which bridges the research gap to some extent. We propose a system dynamics model that assesses the impact of various incentive policies on the economic and environmental benefits of SP. The model considers the life cycle cost and comprises four subsystems. By conducting a case study on Nansha Port, we find that price subsidies are more effective than construction subsidies in overcoming economic barriers. Furthermore, we observe that the overall economic benefits only increase when the electricity price decreases. This is because lowering the electricity price enhances the profitability of ships without negatively affecting port revenue. Additionally, it is the proportion of the electricity price and service price that determines the overall economic benefits, rather than the SP price itself. Hence, it is recommended to provide preferential subsidies for the electricity price.

RESUMO

miRNAs govern gene expression and regulate plant defense. Alternaria alternata is a destructive fungal pathogen that damages apple. The wild apple germplasm Malus hupehensis is highly resistant to leaf spot disease caused by this fungus. Herein, we elucidated the regulatory and functional role of miR393a in apple resistance against A. alternata by targeting Transport Inhibitor Response 1. Mature miR393 accumulation in infected M. hupehensis increased owing to the transcriptional activation of MIR393a, determined to be a positive regulator of A. alternata resistance to either 'Orin' calli or 'Gala' leaves. 5' RLM-RACE and co-transformation assays showed that the target of miR393a was MhTIR1, a gene encoding a putative F-box auxin receptor that compromised apple immunity. RNA-seq analysis of transgenic calli revealed that MhTIR1 upregulated auxin signaling gene transcript levels and influenced phytohormone pathways and plant-pathogen interactions. miR393a compromised the sensitivity of several auxin-signaling genes to A. alternata infection, whereas MhTIR1 had the opposite effect. Using exogenous indole-3-acetic acid or the auxin synthesis inhibitor L-AOPP, we clarified that auxin enhances apple susceptibility to this pathogen. miR393a promotes SA biosynthesis and impedes pathogen-triggered ROS bursts by repressing TIR1-mediated auxin signaling. We uncovered the mechanism underlying the miR393a-TIR1 module, which interferes with apple defense against A. alternata by modulating the auxin signaling pathway.

RESUMO

Despite the considerable contributions of remittances to households and economic advancements, their environmental implications have received little attention in empirical research. This study was, therefore, conducted to help fill that gap, using Ghana as an evidence. In achieving the above goal, robust econometric methods that control for endogeneity, heteroscedasticity and serial correlation among others, were engaged for the analysis. From the results, the studied variables were first-differenced stationary and cointegrated in the long run. The elasticities of the predictors were explored via the FMOLS, DOLS and CCR estimators, and from the results, remittance inflows worsened the ecological quality in Ghana through high CO2 emissions. Also, population growth and energy utilization were not friendly to the country's environment; however, technological innovations improved environmental quality in the nation via low CO2 effusions. The VECM was employed to examine the path of causalities amidst the series, and from the results, there were bidirectional causalities between remittance inflows and CO2 emissions and between population growth and CO2 emanations. Also, a causation from energy utilization to CO2 effluents was discovered; however, there was no causality between technological innovations and CO2 exudates in the country. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that, authorities should enact regulations to control the activities of polluting industries that are being financed by remittances. Also, households and individuals should minimize their use of remittances to finance carbon-intensive items, like automobiles and air-conditioners among others, that add to environmental pollution in the country.

RESUMO

This study examined the nexus between energy consumption and environmental quality in light of China's 2060 carbon-neutrality agenda utilizing annual frequency data from 1971 to 2018. In order to obtain valid and reliable outcomes, more robust econometric techniques were employed for the analysis. From the results, all the variables were first differenced stationary and cointegrated in the long-run. The elastic effects of the predictors on the explained variable were explored through the ARDL, FMOLS, and the DOLS techniques, and from the discoveries, energy utilization worsened environmental quality in the country via more CO2 emissions. Also, industrialization and urbanization deteriorated the country's environmental quality; however, technological innovations improved ecological quality in the nation. On the causal connections between the variables, a unidirectional causality from energy consumption to CO2 effluents was discovered. Also, feedback causalities between industrialization and CO2 secretions, and between urbanization and CO2 exudates were disclosed. However, there was no causality between technological innovations and CO2 emanations. Based on the findings, the study recommended among others that, since energy consumption pollutes the environment, the country should transition to the utilization of renewable energies. Also, the government should allocate more resources to the renewable energy sector. This will help increase the portion of clean energy in the country's total energy mix. Furthermore, research and development that are linked to the utilization of green energies should be supported by the government. Data constraints were the main limitation of this exploration. Therefore, in the future, if more data become available, similar explorations could be conducted to check the robustness of our study's outcomes.

RESUMO

MicroRNA (miRNA)-mediated post-transcriptional regulation plays a vital role in the response of plants to pathogens. Although the microRNA397 family has been implicated in physiological processes as an important regulator, little is known about its function in the resistance of plants to pathogens. Here, Malus hupehensis miR397, which was induced by Botryosphaeria dothidea infection, was identified to directly target M. hupehensis Laccase7 (MhLAC7). The expression analysis of mature Mh-miR397 and MhLAC7 revealed their partly opposite expression patterns. The coexpression of Mh-miR397b in MhLAC7 overexpressing Nicotiana benthamiana suppressed the accumulation of exogenous MhLAC7 and endogenous NbLAC7, which led to decreased lignin content and reduced plant resistance to Botrytis cinerea. As reflected by increasing disease severity and pathogen growth, overexpression of miR397b in both the resistant M. hupehensis and susceptible M. domestica 'Gala' resulted in an increased sensitivity to B. dothidea infection, owing to reduced LAC7 expression and lignin content; however, the inhibition of miR397 had opposite effects. MicroRNA397 functions as a negative regulator in the resistance of Malus to B. dothidea by modulating the LAC7 expression and lignin biosynthesis.
