Cigarettes, potentially safer alternatives to combustible cigarettes, have been reported to increase the health risk for long-term users, so accumulating information about their potential toxicity is of great concern. However, toxicological evaluations of e-cigarette aerosols are limited, which may be attributed to the lack of a simple and efficient extraction method. Here, we developed a high-speed centrifugal method for extracting e-cigarette aerosol collected mass (ACM) and prepared ACM samples of 26 representative e-cigarettes, and 10 samples were further selected based on their cytotoxicity for systematic toxicological assessments. The average extraction efficiency of ACM, primary aerosol components, and typical carbonyls exceeded 85%. The toxicological evaluation showed that the IC50 value range of e-cigarettes for cytotoxicity was 2-52 mg/mL ACM, all e-cigarettes can induce the risk of DNA damage, mitochondrial depolarization, and c-Jun-related signal disturbances; most e-cigarettes significantly caused disturbance of oxidative stress balance. E-cigarettes with higher cytotoxicity appeared to cause a higher degree of damage, while no e-cigarette promoted mutagenicity and cytochrome c release. The toxicity difference among e-cigarettes using nicotine equivalent was significantly lower than that of ACM. This study provides a novel extraction method and a comprehensive in vitro toxicity risk profile of e-cigarette aerosols.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive impairment is common among hemodialysis patient, but still lack adequate screening in clinical settings. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is reportedly to be a sensitive screening tool for cognitive impairment, but its clinical value in patients undergoing hemodialysis is not well established. We aimed to validate the utility of the Beijing version of the MoCA (MoCA-BJ) for detecting cognitive impairment in comparison to a detailed neuropsychological battery as the gold standard. METHODS: We assessed 613 patients undergoing hemodialysis using the MoCA-BJ, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Cognitive dysfunction was defined by the fifth version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V). Spearman's correlation and linear regression were used to estimate the performance of the MoCA-BJ and MMSE in predicting cognitive impairment. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the utility of various cutoffs of the MoCA-BJ and MMSE for predicting cognitive impairment. RESULTS: Cognitive impairment was diagnosed in 80.91% (496/613), 75.69% (464/613), and 61.34% (376 /613) of the patients using the DSM-V, MoCA-BJ, and MMSE, respectively. Spearman's rank correlation analysis indicated that the MoCA-BJ was significantly correlated with the neuropsychological battery (rs = 0.639, p<0.001), whereas the MMSE had a weaker correlation with the battery. The area under the ROC curve for cognitive impairment diagnosis using the MoCA-BJ was 0.891 (95% confidence interval: 0.859-0.924) while using the MMSE was 0.823 (95% confidence interval: 0.786-0.860). The optimal MoCA-BJ cutoff score in discriminating patients with and without cognitive impairment was 24 points with a sensitivity of 0.877 and specificity of 0.752. CONCLUSION: The MoCA-BJ offers good sensitivity and specificity levels in detecting cognitive impairment in hemodialysis patients. These findings support the utility of the MoCA-BJ as a screening tool for cognitive impairment in Chinese patients undergoing hemodialysis.

OBJECTIVE: To observe spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) features and to determine whether baseline OCT features can be used as predictors of visual acuity outcome in eyes with acute welding arc maculopathy. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled twenty-two eyes of eleven subjects with acute welding arc maculopathy. All subjects were evaluated by SD-OCT at baseline and final visit. The involved parameters included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), the length of ellipsoid zone (EZ) defects, the greatest linear dimension (GLD) of outer retinal lesions, EZ reflectivity and relative EZ reflectivity (defined as the ratio of EZ reflectivity to retinal pigment epithelium reflectivity on OCT). RESULTS: Acute welding arc maculopathy was presented as abnormal hyperreflectivity, hyporeflectivity and defects of outer retinal layer in fovea on OCT. Compared with baseline, BCVA improved significantly accompanied by decreased GLD of outer retinal lesions and the length of EZ defects at final visit (P = 0.0004, P < 0.0001 and P < 0.0001, respectively). No significant changes were shown on CMT (P = 0.248). In multivariate regression analysis, final BCVA was associated with baseline BCVA and the length of EZ defects (P = 0.012 and P = 0.045, respectively). However, EZ reflectivity and relative EZ reflectivity were not associated with final BCVA (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, SD-OCT images clearly reveal morphological changes in outer retinal layer in acute welding arc maculopathy. The baseline BCVA and length of EZ defects are the strongest predictors of final BCVA.

Environmental magnetic proxies provide a rapid means of assessing the degree of industrial heavy metal pollution in soils and sediments. To test the efficiency of magnetic methods for detecting contaminates from a Fe-smelting plant in Loudi City, Hunan Province (China) we investigated river sediments from Lianshui River. Both magnetic and non-magnetic (microscopic, chemical and statistical) methods were used to characterize these sediments. Anthropogenic heavy metals coexist with coarse-grained magnetic spherules. It can be demonstrated that the Pollution Load Index of industrial heavy metals (Fe, V, Cr, Mo, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cu) and the logarithm of saturation isothermal remanent magnetization, a proxy for magnetic concentration, are significantly correlated. The distribution heavy metal pollution in the Lianshui River is controlled by surface water transport and deposition. Our findings demonstrate that magnetic methods have a useful and practical application for detecting and mapping pollution in and around modern industrial cities.
