RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between the risk of malnutrition, as estimated by the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) numerical scores, and adverse outcomes in oncology patients. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. SETTINGS: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CKNI, VIP, Sinomed and Wanfang databases. Studies that examined the association between the risk of malnutrition, as estimated by the PG-SGA numerical scores, and overall survival (OS) or postoperative complications in oncology patients were included. Patients were classified as low risk (PG-SGA ≤ 3), medium risk (PG-SGA 4-8) and high risk of malnutrition (PG-SGA > 8). SUBJECT: Nineteen studies reporting on twenty articles (n 9286 patients). RESULTS: The prevalence of medium and high risk of malnutrition ranged from 16·0 % to 71·6 %. A meta-analysis showed that cancer patients with medium and high risk of malnutrition had a poorer OS (adjusted hazard ratios (HR) 1·98; 95 % CI 1·77, 2·21) compared with those with a low risk of malnutrition. Stratified analysis revealed that the pooled HR was 1·55 (95 % CI 1·17, 2·06) for medium risk of malnutrition and 2·65 (95 % CI 1·90, 3·70) for high risk of malnutrition. Additionally, the pooled adjusted OR for postoperative complications was 4·65 (95 % CI 1·61, 13·44) for patients at medium and high risk of malnutrition. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of medium and high risk of malnutrition, as estimated by the PG-SGA numerical scores, is significantly linked to poorer OS and an increased risk of postoperative complications in oncology patients.

RESUMO

Global environmental deterioration poses a major risk to ecological security and human health, and emerging technologies are urgently needed to deal with it. Therefore, the exploitation of photocatalysts with favorable activity for efficient degradation of pesticide contaminants is one of the strategies to achieve environmental remediation. Herein, oxygen vacancy-rich Bi2WO6 (Ov-BWO) was prepared through a solvothermal method utilizing ethylene glycol (EG), which exhibited excellent photocatalytic efficiency in photodegradation of glyphosate. The formation of oxygen vacancies (Ovs) in Ov-BWO was demonstrated utilizing XPS and EPR. PL, TRPL, photocurrent tests, and EIS analyses revealed that Ovs accelerated effective transfer of photogenerated charge, extended lifetime of charge carriers, promoted production of active species and significantly improved the photocatalytic performance. Compared with the low-activity Bi2WO6 (BWO, 59.6%), Ov-BWO showed outstanding photocatalytic activity, achieving a degradation efficiency of 91% for glyphosate at 120 min of visible light irradiation. Moreover, Ov-BWO also displayed outstanding recyclable stability after four repeated uses. Based on the characterization of photoelectric properties, a feasible photocatalytic reaction was put forth, along with glyphosate degradation pathways. Furthermore, the degradation intermediates of glyphosate were analyzed in detail employing HPLC-MS. The toxicity assessment indicated that degraded products had been proven to be non-toxic to the ecological system. This work presents the potential of photocatalysts with Ovs for the photodegradation of pesticides, providing a viable strategy for environmental renovation.

RESUMO

Background: Accurate preoperative evaluation of fistula-in-ano can guide the choice of surgical procedure and may improve healing rates. This prospective study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of conventional 3D transperineal ultrasound (3D-TPUS) compared with SonoVue (SVE)-enhanced 3D-TPUS for the detection and classification of anal fistula. Methods: In this prospective study, 3D-TPUS reconstructions were performed before and after SVE enhancement in 60 patients with fistula-in-ano who intended to undergo surgery at the Department of Anorectal Surgery, Qilu Hospital, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University (P. R. China) between January 2021 and October 2021. Accuracies of anal fistula classification, complexity classification, detection of anal fistula branches, and detection of internal opening between 3D-TPUS and SVE 3D-TPUS were compared based on a reference standard-intraoperative findings. Results: This study enrolled 60 patients (mean age, 37.1 ± 11.4 years; mean follow-up, 9 ± 3 months). Intraoperative findings showed that the fistula type was intersphincteric in 23 patients (38.3%), trans-sphincteric in 35 (58.3%; 12 high and 23 low), and suprasphincteric in 2 (3.3%). Moreover, 68 internal openings were found. Compared with the accuracy of 3D-TPUS, that of SVE 3D-TPUS was similar in fistula classification [95.0% (57/60) vs 96.7% (58/60), P = 0.392], but significantly higher in internal opening evaluation [80.9% (55/68) vs 97.1% (66/68), P = 0.001], complexity classification [85.0% (51/60) vs 98.3% (59/60), P = 0.018], and detection of fistula branches [70.4% (19/27) vs 92.6% (25/27), P = 0.031]. Conclusions: SVE 3D-TPUS may be a useful examination for patients with perianal fistulae because of its high accuracy and consistency with intraoperative findings, especially in complex fistula-in-ano and difficult cases.

RESUMO

Monte Carlo eXtreme (MCX) method has a unique advantage for deep neural network based bioluminescence tomography (BLT) reconstruction. However, this method ignores the distribution of sources energy and relies on the determined tissue structure. In this paper, a deep 3D hierarchical reconstruction network for BLT was proposed where the inputs were divided into two parts -- bioluminescence image (BLI) and anatomy of the imaged object by CT. Firstly, a parallel encoder is used to feature the original BLI & CT slices and integrate their features to distinguish the different tissue structure of imaging objects; Secondly, GRU is used to fit the spatial information of different slices and convert it into 3D features; Finally, the 3D features are decoded to the spacial and energy information of source by a symmetrical decoding structure. Our research suggested that this method can effectively compute the radiation intensity and the spatial distribution of the source for different imaging object.

RESUMO

Developing sensitive practical sensors for monitoring pesticide residues in edible foods and environmental samples is vital for food safety and environmental protection. Enzyme-inhibited biosensors offer effective alternative sensing strategies by using the inherent characteristics of pesticides. To further improve the degradation function of pesticide sensors, here, a target-triggered porphyrin metal-organic framework (MOF)-based nanosystem was designed with the synergetic bifunction of sensitive detection and controllable degradation of the triazophos pesticide. As a result of triazophos-inhibited glutathione consumption, the MOF collapsed and released the ligand porphyrin, leading to the recovery of fluorescence and photosensitization of the free porphyrin. The fluorescence recovery resulted in a sensitive detection limit of 0.6 ng mL-1 for triazophos, which was also applied for the determination of contaminated samples and bioaccumulation in rice. Furthermore, the target-activated photocatalytic ability of porphyrin endowed the system with the ability to effectively generate reactive oxygen species for degrading triazophos with a removal rate of ∼85%, achieving eco-friendly synergetic detection and photodegradation in a controllable way. Therefore, the intelligent multifunctional MOF system demonstrated the potential of programmable systems for jointly controllable tracking and elimination of pesticide residues in the environment and opened a new avenue for designing a precise mechanism for stimulus-triggered degradation of pesticide residues accompanied by sensitive detection for environmental friendliness and food safety.

RESUMO

As quorum sensing (QS) regulates bacterial pathogenicity, antiquorum sensing agents have powerful application potential for controlling bacterial infections and overcoming pesticide/drug resistance. Identifying anti-QS agents thus represents a promising approach in agrochemical development. In this study, the anti-QS potency of 53 newly prepared benzothiazole derivatives containing an isopropanolamine moiety was analyzed, and structure-activity relationships were examined. Compound D3 exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity, with an in vitro EC50 of 1.54 µg mL-1 against Xanthomonas oryzae pv oryzae (Xoo). Compound D3 suppressed QS-regulated virulence factors (e.g., biofilm, extracellular polysaccharides, extracellular enzymes, and flagella) to inhibit bacterial infection. In vivo anti-Xoo assays indicated good control efficiency (curative activity, 47.8%; protective activity, 48.7%) at 200 µg mL-1. Greater control efficiency was achieved with addition of 0.1% organic silicone or orange peel essential oil. The remarkable anti-QS potency of these benzothiazole derivatives could facilitate further novel bactericidal compound development.

RESUMO

As a type of emerging pollutant, organophosphate esters (OPEs) have the characteristics of toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation. Due to their wide use in production and life, OPEs pose potential risks to ecosystems when they enter the environment. In this study, the concentrations of 14 species of OPEs in surface water were determined using UPLC-MS/MS, and the spatial distribution of the OPEs in the surface water of the estuary of the Yellow River basin was further analyzed. The pollution sources were analyzed using correlation analysis and principal component analysis, and the ecological risk was evaluated. The results indicated that the concentration of Σ14OPEs in surface water ranged from 183.81 to 1674.52 ng·L-1, with an average concentration of 638.25 ng·L-1. Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tris(1-chloro-2-propanyl) phosphate (TCPP) were the main OPEs. The Xiaoqing River flowing through the urban area differed from the main stream of the Yellow River and other branches in terms of OPEs composition characteristics, which showed a greater impact from human activities. The distribution of Σ14OPEs showed an obvious regional pattern, with a trend of increasing and then decreasing along the direction of the Yellow River inlet. The results of source analysis revealed that human activities such as industrial wastewater discharge from different industries, transportation, and atmospheric deposition were the sources of OPEs in surface water. The ecological risk assessment results indicated that TCEP posed a high risk to aquatic organisms in the main stream of the Yellow River, Xiaoqing River, and Zhimai River, and tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP) and triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) posed a low risk at some sites.

RESUMO

Natural polymer flocculant possesses an exciting prospect in water treatment due to its non-toxicity, wide source, low cost and biodegradability. In this work, we have successfully synthesized the anionic terpolymer of carboxymethyl cellulose-itaconic acidsodium alginate (CIS) by microwave-assisted copolymerization. By studying the flocculation properties towards cationic dye of crystal violet (CV), the optimum synthesis conditions were determined. The maximum removal rate of 100 mg/L CV simulated wastewater was 92.2 % with CIS concentration of 30 mg/L. The flocculation kinetic results showed the rapid dye removal rate and the dye decolorization ratio of 89.8 % could be obtained at 75 s. Moreover, the CIS flocculant showed excellent flocculation effects in ambient pH of 4-10, flocculation temperature of 10-40 °C, and various inorganic salts. In general, the anionic CIS flocculant shows excellent cost effectiveness, where the predicted operation cost of as-prepared CIS is about 60 % of conventional polyacrylamide flocculant. It also has the advantages of excellent ecofriendliness and rich raw material source, indicative its potential applications of wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

The ubiquitous nanoplastics are now considered emergent pollutants in environments. Bioaccumulation of nanoplastics is an important indicator of their hazard. In this work, molecular dynamics were used to study the uptake of five nanoplastics (polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), polylactic acid (PLA), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)) onto DPPC (dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine) bilayers. Results suggest that nanoplastics became compact after they were deposited in the human body. For PET, PLA, and PS nanoplastics, a free energy barrier of 4-22 kcal mol-1 needed to be overcome to transfer these polymers from the interface region to the center of the DPPC bilayer. Besides, the free energy difference of PVC and PP from the bulk H2O to the surface of DPPC was -18.67 kcal mol-1 and -25.94 kcal mol-1, respectively. After uptake, the interaction between nanoplastics and lipid bilayer was dominated by the van der Waals rather than electrostatic interaction. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of nanoplastics was also evaluated and it is reflected in their ability to decrease the thickness of the lipid bilayer. Overall, this work provides implications for understanding the bioaccumulation and toxicity of nanoplastic at the molecular level.

RESUMO

In the Pearl River Delta (PRD), population growth and economic development have steadily increased the anthropogenic nutrient discharge into coastal waters. In this study, we employed the observed concentration and model reproduced runoff to quantify the interannual variation and the long-term (1985-2021) trends in riverine chemical oxygen demand (CODMn), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and nutrient fluxes. The annual CODMn and BOD fluxes increased slightly between 1999 and 2021. In comparison, the mean annual dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) fluxes of the four eastern outlets increased significantly from 2.05 × 105 t/a in 1985-1995 to 3.11 × 105 t/a in 1999-2011 and then to 3.91 × 105 t/a in 2014-2021. The outlets with the largest contributions to the CODMn, BOD, and DIN fluxes were Humen and Modaomen, which are both located near large cities. By calculating the CODMn fluxes upstream of the PRD, we found that the CODMn fluxes from downstream in the PRD increased faster than the fluxes from upstream. It follows that the increase in CODMn at outlets was mostly driven by the contributions of downstream major cities. In addition, the proportion of ammonia nitrogen flux in the DIN flux decreased from over 50 % to under 10 % at most outlets. This indicates that the toxicity of DIN fluxes has been mitigated. The DIN fluxes also showed a positive correlation with surface chlorophyll a and a negative correlation with bottom dissolved oxygen outside the Pearl River Estuary (PRE). This implies that the changes in phytoplankton growth and oxygen levels outside the PRE are closely linked to the variation in river-delivered nutrients, and the increasing riverine nutrient input may result in the expansion of intensified low-oxygen conditions outside the PRE.

RESUMO

The United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) involve society, economy, and environment, and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is an important path to implement the SDGs. Moreover, the BRI is a vision for economic development of countries along the route. Although many studies documented the effect of the BRI on environment and economic performance, few studies have discussed the effect of the BRI on social and economic benefits. Therefore, we introduce the public health expenditure to explore the relationship between the BRI and the public health and economic growth of countries along the route from the dual perspective of social development and economic growth. Based on a panel data from 171 countries from 2010 to 2018, the current research explores whether the BRI can boost public health and promote economic growth in the belt-road countries. As a result, we found that the BRI boosted the expenditure of public health and effectively spurred economic growth in the belt-road countries. Furthermore, the effect of the BRI on the economic growth in the countries along the route depends on the level of public health expenditure in each country; the positive effect of the BRI on economic growth is significant when the public health expenditure level is moderate instead of low or high. The findings provide theoretical and practical insights into the SDGs of the BRI.

RESUMO

The rapid growth of malware has become a serious problem that threatens the security of the mobile ecosystem and needs to be studied and resolved. Android is the main target of attackers due to its open source and popularity. To solve this serious problem, an accurate and efficient malware detection method is needed. Most existing methods use a single type of feature, which can be easily bypassed, resulting in low detection accuracy. In addition, although multiple types of features are used in some methods to solve the drawbacks of detection methods using a single type of feature, there are still some problems. Firstly, due to multiple types of features, the number of features in the initial feature set is extremely large, and some methods directly use them for training, resulting in excessive overhead. Furthermore, some methods utilize feature selection to reduce the dimensionality of features, but they do not select highly distinguishable features, resulting in poor detection performance. In this article, an effective and accurate method for identifying Android malware, which is based on an analysis of the use of seven types of static features in Android is proposed to cope with the rapid increase in the amount of Android malware and overcome the drawbacks of detection methods using a single type of feature. Instead of utilizing all extracted features, we design three levels of feature selection methods to obtain highly distinguishable features that can be effective in identifying malware. Then a fully densely connected convolutional network based on DenseNet is adopted to leverage features more efficiently and effectively for malware detection. Compared with the number of features in the original feature set, the number of features in the feature set obtained by the three levels of feature selection methods is reduced by about 97%, but the accuracy is only reduced by 0.45%, and the accuracy is more than 99% in a variety of machine learning methods. Moreover, we compare our detection method with different machine learning models, and the experimental results show that our method outperforms general machine learning models. We also compare the performance of our detection method with two state-of-the-art neural networks. The experimental results show that our detection model can greatly reduce the training cost and still achieve good detection performance, reaching an accuracy of 99.72%. In addition, we compare our detection method with other similar detection methods that also use multiple types of features. The results show that our detection method is superior to the comparison methods.

RESUMO

To assess the variations of soil quality among land use types and with altitude in the rocky mountain area of northern Hebei Province is critical for preventing further human-induced degradation of land and vegetation, and for formulating a strategic plan on vegetation restoration after the Beijing Winter Olympics. Taking Betula platyphylla natural forest, Larix gmelinii plantation, natural grassland and abandoned cropland as research objects, 13 soil physicochemical indices (e.g., soil bulk density, porosity and soil nutrient content) were measured to compare soil quality among land use types. The results showed that soil quality presented the trend as B. platyphylla natural forest > natural grassland > L. gmelinii plantation > abandoned cropland. B. platyphylla natural forest had the best soil quality due to high total nitrogen (3.24 ±1.42 g·kg-1) and phosphorus (0.59±0.10 g·kg-1) contents, suggesting that long-term soil nutrient accumulation played an important role in preventing soil degradation. Soil quality in natural grassland was lower than that in B. platyphylla natural forest, due to topographic factors and coarse soil fraction. Soil physical properties in L. gmelinii plantation had been substantially improved after 40 years restoration, as indicated by significant reductions in soil gravel fraction, while soil nutrient contents changed little. The low soil quality in abandoned cropland was attributable to low vegetation coverage and intense human activities in the low-altitude area. Driven by soil total nitrogen, soil quality under the four land use types increased with altitude, and peaked at about 1700 m. We suggested that enclosure and ecological restoration measures should be strengthened in ecologically-fragile, low-altitude areas, taking sustainable development into consideration for high-density stands and promoting plantations to adapt to environmental change.

RESUMO

The urbanization of Tibetan Plateau (TP) probably results in a significant contamination of organic pollutants in the area, such as phthalate esters (PAEs). However, there is a lack of monitoring and evaluation of their occurrence and risks in the outdoor dust on TP. This study for the first time investigated the concentrations, distributions and health risk of PAEs in outdoor dust samples on TP, China. A total of 132 outdoor dust samples were collected from five different functional areas, and results showed the ubiquitous detection of all PAEs in the samples. The Σ6PAEs concentrations ranged from 0.08 to 31.49 µg·g-1 with a mean of 3.57 µg·g-1. High concentrations of Σ6PAEs in the outdoor dust were found in commercial districts, which were attributed to the heavy use of PAEs in the public commerce such as consumer products, commodities, and building materials. Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were the dominant components accounting for 30.65% and 53.19% of the Σ6PAEs. Principal component analysis, positive matrix factorization, and correlation analysis were used to apportion the potential sources of PAEs in outdoor dust samples. The PAEs in the outdoor dust originated mainly from wide application of plasticizers as well as cosmetics and personal care products. The main pathways of human exposure to PAEs in the outdoor dust were ingestion and dermal absorption of dust particles. The total intakes of PAEs from outdoor dusts for children and adults were 1.50 × 10-5 and 2.47 × 10-6 mg·kg-1·d-1, respectively. Children were more susceptible to the PAEs intake than the adults. Although the estimated health risks of the six PAEs are currently acceptable, caution is needed given the likely future increase in use of these PAEs and the currently unknown contribution to human exposure by other medium.

RESUMO

The utilization of prefabricated components is taken as a potential way to reduce carbon emissions from the construction industry, and the prefabrication rate may be a factor that influences the mitigation efficiency. This study develops an assessment method to compare carbon emissions of a building in the construction stage when it is built with multiple different prefabrication rates. Firstly, two carbon sources (building materials and machineries) and three construction sub-phases (production of materials and components, transportation, and on-site construction) are determined to clarify the calculation boundary. Then, a carbon emission measurement model for prefabricated buildings in the construction stage is developed by using a process-based method. A dormitory building in Chongqing, China, is selected to conduct a case study to show the application of the provided model. The result shows that the carbon emission of prefabricated buildings is higher compared to that of traditional cast-in situ buildings. Moreover, the emission of prefabricated buildings decreased slightly with the increase in the prefabrication rate. A detailed discussion is followed to investigate the reason why the carbon emission does not decrease with the utilization of prefabricated units. Based on the discussion, some suggestions are given to improve the carbon emission reduction efficiency of prefabrication techniques.

RESUMO

DNA metabarcoding is increasingly used for the assessment of aquatic communities, and numerous studies have investigated the consistency of this technique with traditional morpho-taxonomic approaches. These individual studies have used DNA metabarcoding to assess diversity and community structure of aquatic organisms both in marine and freshwater systems globally over the last decade. However, a systematic analysis of the comparability and effectiveness of DNA-based community assessment across all of these studies has hitherto been lacking. Here, we performed the first meta-analysis of available studies comparing traditional methods and DNA metabarcoding to measure and assess biological diversity of key aquatic groups, including plankton, microphytobentos, macroinvertebrates, and fish. Across 215 data sets, we found that DNA metabarcoding provides richness estimates that are globally consistent to those obtained using traditional methods, both at local and regional scale. DNA metabarcoding also generates species inventories that are highly congruent with traditional methods for fish. Contrastingly, species inventories of plankton, microphytobenthos and macroinvertebrates obtained by DNA metabarcoding showed pronounced differences to traditional methods, missing some taxa but at the same time detecting otherwise overseen diversity. The method is generally sufficiently advanced to study the composition of fish communities and replace more invasive traditional methods. For smaller organisms, like macroinvertebrates, plankton and microphytobenthos, DNA metabarcoding may continue to give complementary rather than identical estimates compared to traditional approaches. Systematic and comparable data collection will increase the understanding of different aspects of this complementarity, and increase the effectiveness of the method and adequate interpretation of the results.

RESUMO

Bioluminescence tomography (BLT) has received a lot of attention as an important technique in bio-optical imaging. Compared with traditional methods, neural network methods have the advantages of fast reconstruction speed and support for batch processing. In this paper, we propose a end-to-end BLT reconstruction based on convolution neural networks scheme. First, 3000 datasets with single source and dual sources projection were conducted by Monte Carlo method, respectively. And three convolution neural networks (VGGNet, ResNet, and DenseNet) were adopted to feature extraction. Then, the filtered features were used as input to the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) to predict the source location. The results of numerical simulation and simulation experiments show, compared with traditional methods, the advantages of our method are including high reconstruction accuracy, faster reconstruction, few parameters, simple reconstruction process and support for batch processing.

RESUMO

To explore the pollution characteristics, potential sources, and ecological and health risk of organophosphate eaters (OPEs) in the surface water of Taihu Lake, water samples from 18 surrounding rivers were collected, as well as 11 water samples from Taihu Lake. The concentrations of 13 OPEs in the water were determined using UPLC-MS/MS, and the spatial distribution of the OPEs in surface water of Taihu Lake basin was further analyzed. The results indicate that, in addition to tripropyl phosphate (TPrP), 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP), and tricresyl phosphate (TCrP), ten OPEs were detected in all the water samples, the total concentration (ΣOPEs) ranged from 152.5 ng·L-1 to 2524 ng·L-1, and the concentration median value was 519.2 ng·L-1. Tri(chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) and tri(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) were the dominant OPEs, with the concentration ranges of 73.7-1753.9 ng·L-1 (medium value:204.6 ng·L-1) and 43.9-313.5 ng·L-1 (medium value:131.3 ng·L-1), respectively. The ΣOPEs decreased from the northwest region to the southeast, which corresponds to the economic and industrial development. The results of the source identification reveal that the wastewater discharge from electronics and textile enterprises, construction materials, and vehicular and marine traffic emissions may be the principal sources of the OPEs in Taihu Lake. The ecological risk assessment results indicate that only TCPP, tri(dichloropropyl) phosphate (TDCP), and triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) in some sites had a low risk. The health risk assessment reveals that there were no risks based on water intake, but the long-term risk of OPEs to the aquatic ecosystem and surrounding residents still need attention.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: China has a large population of older people, but has not yet undertaken a comprehensive study on the prevalence, risk factors, and management of both dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: For this national cross-sectional study, 46 011 adults aged 60 years or older were recruited between March 10, 2015, and Dec 26, 2018, using a multistage, stratified, cluster-sampling method, which considered geographical region, degree of urbanisation, economic development status, and sex and age distribution. 96 sites were randomly selected in 12 provinces and municipalities representative of all socioeconomic and geographical regions in China. Participants were interviewed to obtain data on sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, medical history, current medications, and family history, and then completed a neuropsychological testing battery administered by a psychological evaluator. The prevalence of dementia (Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and other dementias) and MCI were calculated and the risk factors for different groups were examined using multivariable-adjusted analyses. FINDINGS: Overall age-adjusted and sex-adjusted prevalence was estimated to be 6·0% (95% CI 5·8-6·3) for dementia, 3·9% (3·8-4·1) for Alzheimer's disease, 1·6% (1·5-1·7) for vascular dementia, and 0·5% (0·5-0·6) for other dementias. We estimated that 15·07 million (95% CI 14·53-15·62) people aged 60 years or older in China have dementia: 9·83 million (9·39-10·29) with Alzheimer's disease, 3·92 million (3·64-4·22) with vascular dementia, and 1·32 million (1·16-1·50) with other dementias. Overall MCI prevalence was estimated to be 15·5% (15·2-15·9), representing 38·77 million (37·95-39·62) people in China. Dementia and MCI shared similar risk factors including old age (dementia: odds ratios ranging from 2·69 [95% CI 2·43-2·98] to 6·60 [5·24-8·32]; MCI: from 1·89 [1·77-2·00] to 4·70 [3·77-5·87]); female sex (dementia: 1·43 [1·31-1·56]; MCI: 1·51 [1·43-1·59]); parental history of dementia (dementia: 7·20 [5·68-9·12]; MCI: 1·91 [1·48-2·46]); rural residence (dementia: 1·16 [1·06-1·27]; MCI: 1·45 [1·38-1·54]); fewer years of education (dementia: from 1·17 [1·06-1·29] to 1·55 [1·38-1·73]; MCI: from 1·48 [1·39-1·58] to 3·48 [3·25-3·73]); being widowed, divorced, or living alone (dementia: from 2·59 [2·30-2·90] to 2·66 [2·29-3·10]; MCI: from 1·58 [1·44-1·73] to 1·74 [1·56-1·95]); smoking (dementia: 1·85 [1·67-2·04]; MCI: 1·27 [1·19-1·36]), hypertension (dementia: 1·86 [1·70-2·03]; MCI: 1·62 [1·54-1·71] for MCI), hyperlipidaemia (dementia: 1·87 [1·71-2·05]; MCI: 1·29 [1·21-1·37]), diabetes (dementia: 2·14 [1·96-2·34]; MCI: 1·44 [1·35-1·53]), heart disease (dementia: 1·98 [1·73-2·26]; MCI: 1·17 [1·06-1·30]), and cerebrovascular disease (dementia: 5·44 [4·95-5·97]; MCI: 1·49 [1·36-1·62]). Nine of these risk factors are modifiable. INTERPRETATION: Dementia and MCI are highly prevalent in China and share similar risk factors. A prevention strategy should be developed to target the identified risk factors in the MCI population to thwart or slow down disease progression. It is also crucial to optimise the management of dementia and MCI as an important part of China's public health system. RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 epidemic triggered by coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is rapidly spreading around the globe. This study is aimed at finding out the suspected or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Hubei province, China. We also investigated symptoms, medications, life quality, and psychological issues of IBD patients under the ongoing pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a self-reported questionnaire survey via an online survey platform. SARS-CoV-2 infection-related data was collected from IBD patients. The status quo of medications and symptoms of the subjects were investigated. Life quality, depression, and anxiety were measured by clinical questionnaires and rated on scoring systems. RESULTS: A total of 204 IBD patients from Hubei province were included in this study. No suspected or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection case was found in this study. As a result of city shutdown, two-thirds of the patients (138/204) in our series reported difficulty in accessing medicines and nearly half of them (73/138) had to discontinue medications. Apart from gastrointestinal symptoms, systemic symptoms were common while respiratory symptoms were rare in the cohort. Though their quality of life was not significantly lowered, depression and anxiety were problems that seriously affected them during the COVID-19 epidemic. CONCLUSIONS: Inaccessibility to medications is a serious problem for IBD patients after city shutdown. Efforts have to be made to address the problems of drug withdrawal and psychological issues that IBD patients suffer from during the COVID-19 outbreak.
