RESUMO

Responsive thermochromic fiber materials capable of miniaturization and integrating comfortably and compliantly onto the soft and dynamically deforming human body are promising materials for visualized personal health monitoring. However, their development is hindered by monotonous colors, low-contrast color changes, and poor reversibility. Herein, full-color "off-on" thermochromic fluorescent fibers are prepared based on self-crystallinity phase change and Förster resonance energy transfer for long-term and passive body-temperature monitoring, especially for various personalized customization purposes. The off-on switching luminescence characteristic is derived from the reversible conversion of the dispersion state and fluorescent emission by fluorophores and quencher molecules, which are embedded in the matrix of a phase-change material, during the crystallizing/melting processes. The achievement of full-color fluorescence is attributed to the large modulation range of fluorescence colors according to primary color additive theory. These thermochromic fluorescent fibers exhibit good mechanical properties, fluorescent emission contrast, and reversibility, showing their great potential in flexible smart display devices. Moreover, the response temperature of the thermochromic fibers is controllable by adjusting the phase-change material, enabling body-temperature-triggered luminescence; this property highlights their potential for human body-temperature monitoring and personalized customization. This work presents a new strategy for designing and exploring flexible sensors with higher comprehensive performances.

RESUMO

Retinal prostheses could restore image-forming vision in conditions of photoreceptor degeneration. However, contrast sensitivity and visual acuity are often insufficient. Here we report the performance, in mice and monkeys with induced photoreceptor degeneration, of subretinally implanted gold-nanoparticle-coated titania nanowire arrays providing a spatial resolution of 77.5 µm and a temporal resolution of 3.92 Hz in ex vivo retinas (as determined by patch-clamp recording of retinal ganglion cells). In blind mice, the arrays allowed for the detection of drifting gratings and flashing objects at light-intensity thresholds of 15.70-18.09 µW mm-2, and offered visual acuities of 0.3-0.4 cycles per degree, as determined by recordings of visually evoked potentials and optomotor-response tests. In monkeys, the arrays were stable for 54 weeks, allowed for the detection of a 10-µW mm-2 beam of light (0.5° in beam angle) in visually guided saccade experiments, and induced plastic changes in the primary visual cortex, as indicated by long-term in vivo calcium imaging. Nanomaterials as artificial photoreceptors may ameliorate visual deficits in patients with photoreceptor degeneration.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sintilimab combined with IBI305 treatment regimen had potential clinical benefits than sorafenib in the first-line treatment of patients with unresectable hepatic cell carcinoma (HCC). However, whether sintilimab plus IBI305 has economic benefits in China remains unclear. METHODS: From the perspective of Chinese payers, we used the Markov model to simulate patients with HCC receiving treatment with sintilimab plus IBI305 and sorafenib. The transition probability between health states was estimated using the parametric survival model, and the cumulative medical costs and utility of the two treatment methods were estimated. Considering the incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) as the evaluation index, sensitivity analyses were performed to explore the impact of uncertainty on the results. RESULTS: Compared to sorafenib, sintilimab plus IBI305 generated an additional $17552.17 and 0.33 quality-adjusted life years, resulting in an ICER of $52817.89. The analysis outcomes were most sensitive to the total cost of sintilimab plus IBI305. With a willingness-to-pay threshold of $38,334, sintilimab plus IBI305 showed a 1.28% probability of being cost-effective. The total cost of sintilimab plus IBI305 should be reduced by at least 31.9% to be accepted by Chinese payers. CONCLUSIONS: Regardless of whether the price of sintilimab plus IBI305 and sorafenib is covered by Medicare, sintilimab plus IBI305 is unlikely to be cost-effective for first-line treatment of patients with unresectable HCC.

RESUMO

Gamma detector detection technology based on NaI(Tl) scintillation crystal has become a popular research topic and has been applied in the field of marine radioactive environment automatic monitoring because of its advantages of low power consumption, low cost and strong environmental adaptability. However, insufficient energy resolution of the NaI(Tl) detector and great Compton scattering in the low-energy region caused by the abundance of natural radionuclides in seawater hinder the automatic analysis of radionuclides in seawater. This study adopts the combination of theoretical derivation, simulation experiment, water tank test and seawater field test, establishing an effective and feasible spectrum reconstruction method. The measured spectrum in seawater is regarded as the output signal formed by the convolution of the incident spectrum and the detector response function. The acceleration factor p is introduced to construct the Boosted-WNNLS deconvolution algorithm, which is used to iteratively reconstruct the spectrum. The analysis results of the simulation test, water tank test and field test meet the radionuclide analysis speed and accuracy requirements for the in-situ automatic monitoring of seawater radioactivity. The spectrum reconstruction method in this study converts the physical problem of insufficient detection accuracy of spectrometer in the practical application into a mathematical problem of deconvolution solution, restores the original radiation information in seawater, and improves the resolution of the seawater gamma spectrum.

RESUMO

Industry is a core area to achieve the carbon neutrality target for most developing countries including China. Hence, it is of great practical significance to study the spatio-temporal characteristics of China's industrial carbon intensity and its evolution. The exploratory spatial data analysis methods were adopted to conduct global and local spatial correlation analysis in this paper. The result shows that (1) the industrial carbon emission intensity decreases year by year, with high industrial carbon emission intensity in the West and low in the East. (2) There is a correlation in the spatial distribution of industrial carbon intensity, with the Moran index experiencing the stage of descending first and then ascending. (3) The local spatial clustering of industrial carbon intensity is obvious. (4) Half of the provinces have experienced a leap, with the majority located in the western part of China. Based on these findings, it is concluded that industrial emission reduction policy synergy between provinces is particularly important, such as low-carbon industrial production policy and green industry development policy.

RESUMO

Signaling by the transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß superfamily is necessary for proper neural development and is involved in pain processing under both physiological and pathological conditions. Sensory neurons that reside in the dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) initially begin to perceive noxious signaling from their innervating peripheral target tissues and further convey pain signaling to the central nervous system. However, the transcriptional profile of the TGF-ß superfamily members in DRGs during chronic inflammatory pain remains elusive. We developed a custom microarray to screen for transcriptional changes in members of the TGF-ß superfamily in lumbar DRGs of rats with chronic inflammatory pain and found that the transcription of the TGF-ß superfamily members tends to be downregulated. Among them, signaling of the activin/inhibin and bone morphogenetic protein/growth and differentiation factor (BMP/GDF) families dramatically decreased. In addition, peripherally pre-local administration of activins A and C worsened formalin-induced acute inflammatory pain, whereas activin C, but not activin A, improved formalin-induced persistent inflammatory pain by inhibiting the activation of astrocytes. This is the first report of the TGF-ß superfamily transcriptional profiles in lumbar DRGs under chronic inflammatory pain conditions, in which transcriptional changes in cytokines or pathway components were found to contribute to, or be involved in, inflammatory pain processing. Our data will provide more targets for pain research.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The KEYNOTE-590 trial showed that individuals with advanced esophageal cancer who received Pembrolizumab in combination with chemotherapy as a first-line regimen achieved a significant extension of survival. However, this treatment option increases the financial burden on patients and the economic benefits remain to be further evaluated. METHODS: A Markov model was used to simulate 10-year survival of patients with esophageal cancer from the perspective of United States (US) Medicare payers. We evaluated the economics of Pembrolizumab plus chemotherapy in the PD-L1 positive score (CPS ≥10) and any PD-L1 expression groups, respectively. We estimated total costs, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), and calculated incremental cost effectiveness ratios (ICERs). Sensitivity analyses were conducted to explore the impact of uncertainties on the results. Subgroup analysis was also performed. RESULTS: The analysis results showed that the ICER for pembrolizumab plus chemotherapy versus chemotherapy alone was $293,513.17/QALYs in the any PD-L1 expression group. This exceeded the threshold of willingness to pay ($150,000/QALYs). ICERs were most sensitive to the cost of pembrolizumab and the ICERs exceeded $150,000/QALYs in all subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: Evidence suggests that first-line pembrolizumab in combination with chemotherapy is not a cost-effective option for advanced esophageal cancer in the US, regardless of PD-L1 expression status.

RESUMO

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that spreads widely around the world, infecting tens of millions of people every year. In China, syphilis not only causes more than 1 million infections every year, but also has its own characteristics in spreading pattern: this disease always spreads with the migration of floating population. There have been many related investigations and studies on the transmission of syphilis with the floating population in China, but the study of quantitative modeling in this field is very limited. In this paper, based on the Markov process model and datasets collected in Zhejiang Province, China, we construct a new model to analyze the transmission and immigration process of syphilis. The results show that immigrant patients are one of the sources of infection of syphilis in Zhejiang province, and the infection rate is remarkable which should not be ignored. By using the PRCC method to analyze the relationship between parameters and infected cases, we also find two main effective measures that can control the spread of syphilis and reduce the infection rate: the self-attention of infected persons, and the use of sexual protection measures. With the increasing frequent exchanges of people among different countries and regions, studying the transmission of diseases with the floating populations has become more and more important. The method we use in this paper gives a new insight studying this issue, providing a quantitative research method using the data of diagnosed cases. All the methods and models in this paper can be extendly used in the studies of other diseases where immigrant patients should be considered.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Leaf hydraulic and economics traits are critical for balancing plant water and CO2 exchange, and their relationship has been widely studied. Leaf anatomical traits determine the efficiency of CO2 diffusion within mesophyll structure. However, it remains unclear whether leaf anatomical traits are associated with leaf hydraulic and economics traits acclimation to long-term drought. RESULTS: To address this knowledge gap, eight hydraulic traits, including stomatal and venation structures, four economics traits, including leaf dry mass per area (LMA) and the ratio between palisade and spongy mesophyll thickness (PT/ST), and four anatomical traits related to CO2 diffusion were measured in tomato seedlings under the long-term drought conditions. Redundancy analysis indicated that the long-term drought decreased stomatal conductance (gs) mainly due to a synchronized reduction in hydraulic structure such as leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) and major vein width. Simultaneously, stomatal aperture on the adaxial surface and minor vein density (VDminor) also contributed a lot to this reduction. The decreases in mesophyll thickness (Tmes) and chlorophyll surface area exposed to leaf intercellular air spaces (Sc/S) were primarily responsible for the decline of mesophyll conductance (gm) thereby affecting photosynthesis. Drought increased leaf density (LD) thus limited CO2 diffusion. In addition, LMA may not be important in regulating gm in tomato under drought. Principal component analysis revealed that main anatomical traits such as Tmes and Sc/S were positively correlated to Kleaf, VDminor and leaf thickness (LT), while negatively associated with PT/ST. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicated that leaf anatomy plays an important role in maintaining the balance between water supply and CO2 diffusion responses to drought. There was a strong coordination between leaf hydraulic, anatomical, and economical traits in tomato seedlings acclimation to long-term drought.

RESUMO

Disinfection was essential to keep human healthy from microorganisms in drinking water. Meanwhile, disinfection by-products (DBPs) have been proved to be associated with some adverse health effects. The DBP levels were different in drinking water disinfected by different methods and may cause diverse health risks. However, studies in this field and systematic analysis about risk characteristics are limited. We estimated the health risks of DBPs exposure in drinking water through multi-pathways, and systematically analyzed the characteristics of different disinfection methods and influence factors of health risk of DBPs in China. Drinking water samples were collected and analyzed for DBPs from some representative water treatment plants in several typical regions in China. We adopted the additive method to estimate the health risks of DBPs exposure in drinking water through multi-pathways, and used descriptive and hierarchical analysis to understand their characteristics and influence factors. The concentrations of the six DBPs in drinking water ranged from 1.6 µg/L to 13.3 µg/L. The cumulative cancer risk of DBPs exposure through multi-pathways was 8.63 × 10-5. The total HI of DBPs exposure was 1.70 × 10-1. The health risks of DBPs in drinking water disinfected by chlorine dioxide and sodium hypochlorite were lower than by other disinfection methods. The health risk of DBPs in drinking water was dominated by risk through oral and inhalation route. The health risks in wet season were higher than that in dry season. There is no significant difference in health risk for males and females, but children experienced higher health risks than adults. Our study suggested the situation of that a large population experienced the high cancer risk of DBPs in drinking water in typical regions of China. It was suggested that potential higher risk should be concerned, and possible measures could be considered to decrease the health risks.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate a Met-controlled allosteric module (AM) of neural generation as a potential therapeutic target for brain ischemia. METHODS: We selected Markov clustering algorithm (MCL) to mine functional modules in the related target networks. According to the topological similarity, one functional module was predicted in the modules of baicalin (BA), jasminoidin (JA), cholic acid (CA), compared with I/R model modules. This functional module included three genes: Inppl1, Met and Dapk3 (IMD). By gene ontology enrichment analysis, biological process related to this functional module was obtained. This functional module participated in generation of neurons. Western blotting was applied to present the compound-dependent regulation of IMD. Co-immunoprecipitation was used to reveal the relationship among the three members. We used IF to determine the number of newborn neurons between compound treatment group and ischemia/reperfusion group. The expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) were supposed to show the changing circumstances for neural generation under cerebral ischemia. RESULTS: Significant reduction in infarction volume and pathological changes were shown in the compound treatment groups compared with the I/R model group (P<0.05). Three nodes in one novel module of IMD were found to exert diverse compound-dependent ischemic-specific excitatory regulatory activities. An anti-ischemic excitatory allosteric module (AME) of generation of neurons (AME-GN) was validated successfully in vivo. Newborn neurons increased in BJC treatment group (P<0.05). The expression of VEGF and MMP-9 decreased in the compound treatment groups compared with the I/R model group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: AME demonstrates effectiveness of our pioneering approach to the discovery of therapeutic target. The novel approach for AM discovery in an effort to identify therapeutic targets holds the promise of accelerating elucidation of underlying pharmacological mechanisms in cerebral ischemia.

RESUMO

In recent years, food fraud is a global issue that has raised wide public concern. Mass spectrometry techniques have a significant advantage of qualitatively and quantitatively analyzing food authenticity, especially for highly processed meat products. In this work, a simple and specific, rapid resolution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for the determination of pork content in processed meat products according to internal standard (ISTD) method. To improve the efficiency of sample preparation, simplified bead-beating and enzymolysis process were investigated. In contrast with different heat-stable and specific porcine-peptides, EPITVSSDQMAK, GGPLTAAYR, HDPSLLPWTASYDPGSAK from Carbonic anhydrase 3 proved to have an excellent quantitative ability, thus obtaining good linear relationship and satisfactory recovery. This method was successfully applied to different types of meat products, thus demonstrating that complex mixtures of pork content can be accurately quantified.

RESUMO

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is affected by multiple risk factors. Therefore, it is difficult for clinical professionals to identify women who will not practice EBF well and provide subsequent medical suggestions and treatments. This study aimed to apply a decision tree (DT) model to predict EBF at two months postpartum. The socio-demographic, clinical and breastfeeding parameters of 1,141 breastfeeding women from Nanjing were evaluated. Decision tree modelling was used to analyse and screen EBF factors and establish a risk assessment model of EBF. The Chinese version of the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale (CV-BSES) score, early formula supplementation, abnormal nipples, mastitis, neonatal jaundice, cracked or sore nipples and intended duration of breastfeeding were significant risk factors associated with EBF in the DT model. The accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the DT model were 73.1%, 75.5% and 66.3%, respectively. The DT model showed similar or better performance than the logistic regression model in assessing the risk of early cessation of EBF before two months postpartum. The DT model has potential for application in clinical practice and identifies high-risk subpopulations that need specific prevention.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction using video frames extracted from spherical cameras introduces an innovative measurement method in narrow scenes of architectural heritage, but the accuracy of 3D models and their correlations with frame extraction ratios and blur filters are yet to be evaluated. This article addresses these issues for two narrow scenes of architectural heritage that are distinctive in layout, surface material, and lighting conditions. The videos captured with a hand-held spherical camera (30 frames per second) are extracted to frames with various ratios starting from 10 and increasing every 10 frames (10, 20, …, n). Two different blur assessment methods are employed for comparative analyses. Ground truth models obtained from terrestrial laser scanning and photogrammetry are employed for assessing the accuracy of 3D models from different groups. The results show that the relative accuracy (median absolute errors/object dimensions) of spherical-camera videogrammetry range from 1/500 to 1/2000, catering to the surveying and mapping of architectural heritage with medium accuracy and resolution. Sparser baselines (the length between neighboring image pairs) do not necessarily generate higher accuracy than those from denser baselines, and an optimal frame network should consider the essential completeness of complex components and potential degeneracy cases. Substituting blur frames with adjacent sharp frames could reduce global errors by 5⁻15%.

RESUMO

This research aimed to study the effects of astaxanthin on energy budget and bioaccumulation of microcystin-leucine-arginine (microcystin-LR) in the crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852). The crayfish (21.13 ± 4.6 g) were cultured under microcystin-LR stress (0.025 mg/L) and were fed with fodders containing astaxanthin (0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 mg/g) for 8 weeks in glass tanks (350 mm × 450 mm × 150 mm). Accumulations of microcystin-LR were measured in different organs of P. clarkii. The results suggested that astaxanthin can significantly improve the survival rate and specific growth rate (SGR) of P. clarkii (p < 0.05). The dietary astaxanthin supplement seems to block the bioaccumulation of microcystin-LR in the hepatopancreas and ovaries of P. clarkii to some extent (p < 0.05). Astaxanthin content of 9⁻12 mg/g in fodder can be a practical and economic choice.

RESUMO

This study prepared a carboxylic functionalized bioadsorbent that met the "4-E" criteria: Efficient, Economical, Environmentally friendly, and Easily-produced. Sesame straw (Sesamum indicum L.) was functionalized through treatment with citric acid (SSCA) and tartaric acid (SSTA). The products were examined for adsorption capacity and mechanisms. Langmuir model gave the best fit for the isotherm data, and the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of SSCA was 650mgg-1 for methylene blue (MB). The excellent dye adsorption capacity of SSCA can be attributed to the introduction of ester groups during citric-acid modification and the tube-like structures (i.e., sesame straw cell wall remnants). At last, the cost of carboxylic acid functionalized bioadsorbents was evaluated, which showed that SSCA would be the most cost-effective bioadsorbent. Additionally, this study presents a thermo-decomposition methodology for contaminant-loaded bioadsorbent. Results showed that SSCA is probably one of the few bioadsorbents that can be produced and applied in industrial scale.

RESUMO

Validation of pluripotent modules in diverse networks holds enormous potential for systems biology and network pharmacology. An arising challenge is how to assess the accuracy of discovering all potential modules from multi-omic networks and validating their architectural characteristics based on innovative computational methods beyond function enrichment and biological validation. To display the framework progress in this domain, we systematically divided the existing Computational Validation Approaches based on Modular Architecture (CVAMA) into topology-based approaches (TBA) and statistics-based approaches (SBA). We compared the available module validation methods based on 11 gene expression datasets, and partially consistent results in the form of homogeneous models were obtained with each individual approach, whereas discrepant contradictory results were found between TBA and SBA. The TBA of the Zsummary value had a higher Validation Success Ratio (VSR) (51%) and a higher Fluctuation Ratio (FR) (80.92%), whereas the SBA of the approximately unbiased (AU) p-value had a lower VSR (12.3%) and a lower FR (45.84%). The Gray area simulated study revealed a consistent result for these two models and indicated a lower Variation Ratio (VR) (8.10%) of TBA at 6 simulated levels. Despite facing many novel challenges and evidence limitations, CVAMA may offer novel insights into modular networks.

RESUMO

To develop in situ NaI(Tl) detector for radioactivity measurement in the marine environment, the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) Transport Code was utilized to simulate the measurement of NaI(Tl) detector immersed in seawater, taking into account the material and geometry of the detector, and the interactions between the photons with the atoms of the seawater and the detector. The simulation results of the marine detection efficiency and distance were deduced and analyzed. In order to test their reliability, the field measurement was made at open sea and the experimental value of the marine detection efficiency was deduced and seems to be in good agreement with the simulated one. The minimum detectable activity for (137)Cs in the seawater of NaI(Tl) detector developed was determined mathematically at last. The simulation method and results in the paper can be used for the better design and quantitative calculation of in situ NaI(Tl) detector for radioactivity measurement in the marine environment, and also for some applications such as the installation on the marine monitoring platform and the quantitative analysis of radionuclides.

RESUMO

Published data on the association between CYP17 rs743572 polymorphism and risk of PC showed inconclusive results. The aim of this study was to further estimate the pooled effect size of rs743572 polymorphism and PC progression via large-scale meta-analysis. We searched the case-control studies of rs743572 polymorphism and PC risk in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases up to February 2014. Odds ratios (ORs) along with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled by means of both fixed effects model and random effects model. A total of 38 publications consisting of 42 studies with 15,735 cases and 17,825 controls were included in this meta-analysis. Overall, no significant association was found between rs743572 polymorphism and PC risk. Stratified analyses by control source and sample size did not provide significant results. However, there was a borderline association in African population under A2A2 versus A1A2 + A1A1 genetic model (OR = 1.39, 95 % CI: 1.01-1.92, P = 0.975, I (2) = 0.0 %). Results from the current meta-analysis suggested that CYP17 rs743572 polymorphism might modify the risk of PC in the subjects of African decent.
