RESUMO

PPG (photoplethysmography) holds significant application value in wearable and intelligent health devices. However, during the acquisition process, PPG signals can generate motion artifacts due to inevitable coupling motion, which diminishes signal quality. In response to the challenge of real-time detection of motion artifacts in PPG signals, this study analyzed the generation and significant features of PPG signal interference. Seven features were extracted from the pulse interval data, and those exhibiting notable changes were filtered using the dual-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The real-time detection of motion artifacts in PPG signals was ultimately based on decision trees. In the experimental phase, PPG signal data from 20 college students were collected to formulate the experimental dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves an average accuracy of (94.07±1.14)%, outperforming commonly used motion artifact detection algorithms in terms of accuracy and real-time performance.

RESUMO

The leaf economic spectrum (LES) has been repeatedly verified with regional and global datasets. However, the LES of desert plants and its drivers has not been fully explored at the species level. In this study, we sampled three desert perennial plant species (Alhagi sparsifolia, Karelinia caspia, and Apocynum venetum) at three different geographical areas of distribution in Xinjiang, China, and measured 10 leaf economic traits to determine their strategy of resource utilization. The scores of the first axis from the principal component analysis of 10 leaf economic traits as a continuous variable define the LES. This study showed that the LES did exist in desert plants in this region. The leaf economic spectrum shifted from a more conservative strategy to a more acquisitive strategy with increasing contents of soil potassium (K) and the ratio of K to phosphorus. Except for the vein density of A. venetum, which quadratically correlated with LES, the vein density, distance between veins, and vein loopiness significantly positively correlated with the LES (p < 0.05), indicating a covariation and tradeoff relationship. The annual mean temperature was significantly negatively correlated with LES, while the annual mean precipitation (MAP) and the aridity index (AI), which was calculated by the ratio of MAP to potential evapotranspiration, significantly positively correlated with the LES. Of these, vein loopiness and AI were more effective at predicting the change in LES from anatomical and climatic perspectives owing to their high regression coefficients (R2). The findings of this study will substantially improve the understanding of the strategies of desert plants to utilize resources and predict the structure and function of ecosystems.

RESUMO

Chaotic nonlinear dynamical systems, in which the generated time series exhibit high entropy values, have been extensively used and play essential roles in tracking accurately the complex fluctuations of the real-world financial markets. We are concerned with a system of semi-linear parabolic partial differential equations supplemented by the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition, which governs a financial system comprising the labor force, the stock, the money, and the production sub-blocks distributed in a certain line segment or planar region. The system derived by removing the terms involved with partial derivatives with respect to space variables from our concerned system was demonstrated to be hyperchaotic. We firstly prove, via Galerkin's method and establishing a priori inequalities, that the initial-boundary value problem for the concerned partial differential equations is globally well posed in Hadamard's sense. Secondly, we design controls for the response system to our concerned financial system, prove under some additional conditions that our concerned system and its controlled response system achieve drive-response fixed-time synchronization, and provide an estimate on the settling time. Several modified energy functionals (i.e., Lyapunov functionals) are constructed to demonstrate the global well-posedness and the fixed-time synchronizability. Finally, we perform several numerical simulations to validate our synchronization theoretical results.

RESUMO

The numerous resources are consumed and a large number of multiple-source organic solid wastes are discharged during urban metabolic, which put pressures to environment. This study combined material flow analysis and ecological network analysis to comprehensively analyse the metabolism of multiple-source organic solid waste in Hefei. Analysing current metabolic characteristics of urban multiple-source organic solid waste and relationships between the components of metabolic system can help urban environmental management. The internal material flows of the system were analysed by a metabolic network containing 5 nodes and 18 pathways, which revealed metabolic characteristics of multiple-source organic solid waste in Hefei. The study showed that the metabolic system of multiple-source organic solid waste was relatively stable though distribution of internal flows changed in 8 years. The metabolic environment and agricultural sector covered a relatively large weight in this model. The control and exploitation relationships dominated the metabolic system. The urban metabolic mechanism reflected in this research can improve efficiency of urban metabolic resource, optimize waste management and provide data support for sustainable urban development. This study provided scientific guidance for metabolic research in Hefei and similar cities in China's rapid economic development.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Accurate evaluation of right ventricular (RV) function is always difficult due to its irregular shape and movement. Many indices have been proposed to assess RV function, but none have been universally accepted. This study evaluated RV function in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients using long-axis strain (LAS) and other traditional indices. METHODS: Fifty-seven patients with T2DM and 39 healthy controls were prospectively enrolled. Four-chamber cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and RV short-axis cine images were obtained from all participants to measure the tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), RV ejection fraction (EF), peak longitudinal strain (PLS) and four LAS indices. The inter-and intraobserver variabilities were also calculated. RESULTS: Compared with healthy controls, T2DM was associated with a decreased LAS (apex/lateral wall) (-17.4%±4.2% vs. control, -19.7%±3.7%, P=0.008) and LAS (apex/middle point) (-17.5%±4.5% vs. control, -19.5%±3.9%, P=0.026), but both groups had a similar LAS (RV/lateral wall) and LAS (RV/middle point) (all P>0.05). After adjustments for age and body mass index, a significant difference was observed only for LAS (apex/lateral wall) (P=0.028). There were no significant differences in the TAPSE, RVEF and PLS (all P>0.05). LAS (apex/lateral wall) correlated with the TAPSE (r=-0.723, P<0.001), RVEF (r=-0.270, P=0.008) and PLS (r=0.210, P=0.040). The inter- and intraobserver variability of the LAS (apex/lateral wall) were lower than the other three LAS indices. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with traditional RV function indices, such as the TAPSE, RVEF and PLS, LAS is easy to obtain and shows high repeatability. LAS (apex/lateral wall) may provide a more sensitive T2DM-related RV dysfunction index.

RESUMO

A novel "water in salt" electrolyte is reported for the design of a rocking-chair proton battery. In 20 M ZnCl2 + 1 M HCl electrolyte, the electrochemical proton storage performance using MoO3 is significantly improved. When coupled with a Ni-PBA cathode, the device exhibits a good cycling stability of 76.1% after 400 cycles. This work opens a new avenue for designing low-cost "water in salt" electrolytes for aqueous proton electrochemistry.

RESUMO

Health literacy is the ability of individuals to access, process, and understand health information to make decisions regarding treatment and their health on the whole; it is critical to maintain and improve public health. However, the health literacy of urban and rural populations in China has been little known. Thus, this study aims to assess the status of health literacy and explore the differences of its possible determinants (e.g., socio-economic factors) among urban and rural populations in Henan, China. A cross-sectional study, 78,646 participants were recruited from a populous province in central China with a multi-stage random sampling design. The Chinese Resident Health Literacy Scale was adopted to measure the health literacy of the respondents. In the participants, the level of health literacy (10.21%) in central China was significantly lower than the national average, and a big gap was identified between urban and rural populations (16.92% vs. 8.09%). A noticeable difference was reported in different aspects and health issues of health literacy between urban and rural populations. The health literacy level was lower in those with lower levels of education, and a significant difference was identified in the level of health literacy among people of different ages and occupations in both urban and rural areas. Note that in rural areas, as long as residents educated, they all had higher odds to exhibit basic health literacy than those uneducated; in rural areas, compared with those aged 15 to 24 years, residents aged 45 to 54 years (OR = 0.846,95% CI (0.730, 0.981)), 55 to 64 years (OR = 0.716,95% CI (0.614, 0.836)) and above 65 years (OR = 0.679, 95% CI (0.567, 0.812)) were 84.6%, 71.6%, and 67.9%, respectively, less likely to exhibit basic health literacy. Considering the lower health literacy among rural residents compared with their urban counterparts, a reorientation of the health policy-making for Chinese rural areas is recommended. This study suggests that urban-rural disparity about health literacy risk factors should be considered when implementing health literacy promotion intervention.

RESUMO

Blastocystis is an enteral eukaryote with an omnipresent existence in animals and humans globally. Animals have been proposed to be a major reservoir for the transmission of Blastocystis to individuals due to their high prevalence and large amount of zoonotic subtypes. However, limited data on Blastocystis infection in experimental macaques in China exists. The objective of the current study was to investigate the frequency and subtypes of Blastocystis infection in macaques in southwestern China. A total of 505 fecal samples were collected from experimental macaques in Yunnan province and were analyzed by nested PCR and phylogenetic analyses on the basis of small subunit rRNA (SSU rRNA) gene fragments. A total of 235 specimens were positive for Blastocystis sp., and the prevalence of Blastocystis sp. was 46.5% (235/505). Significant differences in prevalence were also observed among the various species of macaques (P < 0.0133, df = 2, χ2 = 8.64) and the different feed types (P < 0.0093, df = 1, χ2 = 6.77). Moreover, three zoonotic subtypes, ST1, ST3, and ST5, were identified by DNA sequence analysis. There were mainly single subtype infections with some mixed subtype infections, and the predominant subtype was ST3. The results suggested a high prevalence and diversified subtypes in macaques in Yunnan province, southwestern China. Macaques are likely to be potential reservoirs capable of zoonotic transmission of Blastocystis sp. to humans. To our knowledge, this study is the first large-scale systematic analysis of Blastocystis sp. colonization in Yunnan province in the subtropics of China; these results contribute to the in-depth study of genetic characteristics and the prevention, control, and treatment of Blastocystis sp. in macaques in Yunnan province and other regions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Methylation of the Ras-association domain family 1 isoform A (RASSF1A) gene promoter region is thought to participate in the initiation and development of many different cancers. However, in bladder cancer the role of RASSF1A methylation was unclear. To evaluate the relationship between RASSF1A methylation and bladder cancer, a quantitative assessment of an independent meta-analysis was performed. In addition, a DNA methylation microarray database from the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) project was used to validate the results of the meta-analysis. METHODS: We searched published articles from computerized databases, and DNA methylation data were extracted from TCGA project. All data were analyzed by R software. RESULTS: The results of the meta-analysis indicated that the frequency of RASSF1A gene methylation in bladder cancer patients is significantly higher than in healthy controls. The hazard ratio (HR) was 2.24 (95% CI = [1.45; 3.48], P = 0.0003) for overall survival (OS), and the RASSF1A gene promoter methylation status was strongly associated with the TNM stage and differentiation grade of the tumor. The similar results were also found by the data from TCGA project. CONCLUSION: There was a significant relationship between the methylation of the RASSF1A gene promoter and bladder cancer. Therefore, RASSF1A gene promoter methylation will be a potential biomarker for the clinical diagnosis of bladder cancer.
