Significance: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a global health concern with significant implications for vascular health. The current evaluation methods cannot achieve effective, portable, and quantitative evaluation of foot microcirculation. Aim: We aim to use a wearable device laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) to evaluate the foot microcirculation of T2DM patients at rest. Approach: Eleven T2DM patients and twelve healthy subjects participated in this study. The wearable LDF was used to measure the blood flows (BFs) for regions of the first metatarsal head (M1), fifth metatarsal head (M5), heel, and dorsal foot. Typical wavelet analysis was used to decompose the five individual control mechanisms: endothelial, neurogenic, myogenic, respiratory, and heart components. The mean BF and sample entropy (SE) were calculated, and the differences between diabetic patients and healthy adults and among the four regions were compared. Results: Diabetic patients showed significantly reduced mean BF in the neurogenic (p=0.044) and heart (p=0.001) components at the M1 and M5 regions (p=0.025) compared with healthy adults. Diabetic patients had significantly lower SE in the neurogenic (p=0.049) and myogenic (p=0.032) components at the M1 region, as well as in the endothelial (p<0.001) component at the M5 region and in the myogenic component at the dorsal foot (p=0.007), compared with healthy adults. The SE in the myogenic component at the dorsal foot was lower than at the M5 region (p=0.050) and heel area (p=0.041). Similarly, the SE in the heart component at the dorsal foot was lower than at the M5 region (p=0.017) and heel area (p=0.028) in diabetic patients. Conclusions: This study indicated the potential of using the novel wearable LDF device for tracking vascular complications and implementing targeted interventions in T2DM patients.

Scrophularia ningpoensis Hemsl. holds a prominent place among Chinese medicinal herbs. Assessing the soil-plant system of its origin is crucial for ensuring medication safety. Although some trace elements are essential for the normal functioning of living organisms, exposure to higher concentrations is harmful to humans, so in order to assess the possible health risk of trace elements in the soil-plant system of Scrophularia ningpoensis Hemsl. origin for human assessment, we used non-carcinogenic risk (HI) and carcinogenic risk (CR) for their evaluation. In this paper, the following trace elements were studied in the soil-Scrophularia ningpoensis Hemsl. system: manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), molybdenum (Mo), arsenic (As) and lead (Pb). Correlation and structural equation analyses showed that the effect of soil in the root zone on the plant was much greater than the effect of soil in the non-root zone on the plant. The single-factor pollution index (Pi) showed that the soil in the production area of Scrophularia ningpoensis Hemsl. was polluted to a certain extent, notably with Pb showing the highest average Pi values of 0.94 and 0.89 in the non-root and root zones, respectively. Additionally, the Nemerow composite pollution indices (PN) for both zones indicated an alert range. Regarding health risks, exposure to soil in the non-root zone posed higher non-carcinogenic risk (HI) and carcinogenic risk (CR) compared to the root zone, although neither zone presented a significant carcinogenic risk. The potential non-carcinogenic risk (HI) and carcinogenic risk (CR) from consuming Scrophularia ningpoensis Hemsl. leaves and stems were more than ten times higher than that of roots. However, the carcinogenic risk (CR) values for both the soil and plant of interest in the soil- Scrophularia ningpoensis Hemsl. system did not exceed 10-4, and therefore no significant carcinogenic risk existed.

The Wanshan mercury mine, which is an abandoned mine located in northeastern Guizhou Province in Southwest China, has introduced serious Hg pollution to the local ecosystem resulting from previous mining and smelting activities. However, it is not clear to date whether soil pollution has actually improved after treatment by related departments. Therefore, the present study investigates the vegetation community and heavy metal contents of the soil and plants in the Wanshan mercury mining area. The results showed that most of Hg, Cd, As, Cu, and Zn contents in soil samples were higher than those of Soil Environment Quality Risk Control Standard for Soil Contamination of Agricultural Land in China (GB15618-2018). The observed plant species mainly consisted of Compositae, followed by Leguminosae. Unfortunately, this investigation found that heavy metal concentrations in these plants were not extremely high and far below the standard of hyperaccumulator. Despite all this, the maximum values of bioaccumulation factor for Pb, Cd, Hg, As, Cu and Zn were Serissa japonica (Thunb.) Thunb., Rhus chinensis Mill., Potentilla sibbaldii Haller f., Erigeron canadensis L., Clerodendrum bungei var. bungei. and Rhus chinensis Mill., respectively. Regardless of the carcinogenic or noncarcinogenic risk index, the potential risk to urban children is higher. Our results suggest that heavy metal pollution was indeed relieved since their contents in soil significantly decreased in comparison with those reported in other previous studies. This finding provides a reference for the long-term treatment of heavy metal pollution in the local environment and other areas employing analogous environmental protection measures.

ABSTRACT: To investigate the characteristics of pulmonary artery distensibility (PAD) in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (APE) and to assess the correlation of PAD with APE severity and right ventricular function. A total of 33 patients who underwent retrospective electrocardiogram (ECG)-gated computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) with a definite diagnosis of APE were included in the study. According to APE severity, the patients were divided into severe (SPE) and non-severe (NSPE) groups. Data from a control group without APE matching the basic demographics of the APE patients were collected. Pulmonary artery distensibility (PAD) and right ventricular function parameters were compared among the 3 groups, their relationships were investigated, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the above parameters for the diagnosis of APE severity. The PAD values of the control, NSPE, and SPE groups were (7.877 ±â€Š2.637) × 10-3 mm/Hg, (6.050 ±â€Š2.011) × 10-3 mm/Hg, (4.321 ±â€Š1.717) × 10-3 mm/Hg, respectively (P < .01). There were statistically significant differences in right ventricular function parameters among the 3 groups (P < .05). The correlation analysis between PAD and right ventricular function parameters showed a weak negative correlation (r = -0.281--0.392). The area under the ROC curve of PAD was 0.743, the critical value was 4.200, and the sensitivity and specificity were 62.5% and 94.1%, respectively. The PAD obtained by retrospective ECG-gated CTPA could accurately evaluate APE severity and right ventricular function. As the severity of APE increases, PAD decreases, which is helpful to identify patients at high risk of APE.

PURPOSE: To determine the impact of three different regions of interests (ROIs) positioning methods for apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) measurements on the assessment of the grade and recurrence and to examine the correlation between ADC value and histopathological grade/ Ki-67 labeling index (LI) in patients with bladder cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one patients with bladder cancer were retrospectively evaluated. Two observers measured mean ADC values using whole-volume-ROIs, single-section-ROI and three-ROIs methods. Interclass correlation coefficient was analyzed to assess interobserver variability. The grade and recurrence in patients with bladder cancer were assessed by calculating the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves with Az values. Spearman's correlation was used to analyze the correlations of ADC value with grade and Ki-67 LI. RESULTS: For the mean ADC value, the interclass correlation coefficient were excellent with the whole-volume and the single-section method (0.90 [95% CI: 0.84, 0.94] and 0.89 [95% CI: 0.81, 0.93]) and was good with the three-ROIs method (0.72 [95% CI: 0.53, 0.83]). The Az value for determining histological grade and recurrence of bladder cancer were not significantly different from each positioning method (all p > 0.05). There's significant correlation between histological grade and ADC measuring by whole-volume-ROIs and single-section-ROI methods (r = 0.31, p = 0.02; r = 0.37, p < 0.05). The ADC measured by whole-volume-ROIs, single-section-ROI, and three-ROIs methods were significantly and inversely correlated with the Ki-67 LI (r = -0.3; r = -0.49; r = -0.40, all p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: There's no significant difference among any of the ROI positioning methods in evaluation of tumor grade and recurrence. There's significant correlation between histological grade and ADC measuring by whole-volume-ROIs and single-section-ROI methods. The ADC value obtained by either of three methods was significantly and inversely correlated with the Ki-67 LI.

To increase the knowledge on the particulate matter of a wetland in Beijing, an experimental study on the concentration and composition of PM10 and PM2.5 was implemented in Beijing Olympic Forest Park from 2013 to 2014. This study analyzed the meteorological factors and deposition fluxes at different heights and in different periods in the wetlands. The results showed that the mean mass concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 were the highest at 06:00-09:00 and the lowest at 15:00-18:00. And the annual concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 in the wetland followed the order of dry period (winter)>normal water period (spring and autumn)>wet period (summer), with the concentration in the dry period significantly higher than that in the normal water and wet periods. The chemical composition of PM2.5 in the wetlands included NH4(+), K(+), Na(+), Mg(2+), SO4(2-), NO3(-), and Cl(-), which respectively accounted for 12.7%, 1.0%, 0.8%, 0.7%, 46.6%, 33.2%, and 5.1% of the average annual composition. The concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 in the wetlands had a significant positive correlation with relative humidity, a negative correlation with wind speed, and an insignificant negative correlation with temperature and radiation. The daily average dry deposition amount of PM10 in the different periods followed the order of dry period>normal water period>wet period, and the daily average dry deposition amount of PM2.5 in the different periods was dry period>wet period>normal water period.
