RESUMO

Inert construction and demolition waste from Hong Kong (HK public fills) has been used for marine trial reclamation in the Guanghai Bay (GHWT) of the Chinese Mainland. However, an environmental assessment of HK public fills is necessary due to higher radioactivity in HK soils than typical global levels. Here, radiation dose rate, gamma radionuclides and gross beta of HK public fills were analyzed. The origin information was explored using natural primordial radionuclides as fingerprints. Our data show that radiation dose rate of HK public fills before disposal was 0.14-0.54 (0.33 ± 0.03) µSv/h (n = 16,722 data with 2787 ships) in 2014, which is less than the GHWT background. Monthly detection of 238U, 226Ra, 210Pb, 232Th, 228Th, 40K, and gross beta in HK public fills was conducted on three random ships. Their specific activities were <6.27-155.5, 58.7-98.7, <7.83-238.2,97.9-168.6, 87.1-136.0, 463.1-1,018, and 1047-1658 Bq/kgDW, respectively. These results suggest that the radioactivity levels of HK public fills are essentially the same as the GHWT background. The study assessed potential risks using various indices icluding Raeq (Radium equivalent activity), Hex (External radiation hazard index), Hin (Internal radiation hazard index), Iγ (Gamma index), AUI (Activity utilization index), AUI (Activity utilization index), E (Annual effective dose), AGDE (Annual gonadal dose equivalent), RLI (Representative level index), Din (Indoor air absorbed dose rate), Dout (Outdoor air absorbed dose rate), and ELCR (Excess lifetime cancer risk). The study suggests that HK public fills should be used for the trial reclamation rather than building-house materials. This provides valuable insights for the resource utilization and minimizing environmental pollution of HK public fills. The aim is to offer fundamental technical assistance for future waste resource utilization, ecological protection, and restoration in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

RESUMO

Primary health care (PHC) is the most effective way to improve people's health and well-being, and primary care services should act as the cornerstone of a resilient health system and the foundation of universal health coverage. To promote high quality development of PHC, an International Symposium on Quality Primary Health Care Development was held on December 4-5, 2023 in Beijing, China, and the participants have proposed and advocated the Beijing Initiative on Quality Primary Health Care Development. The Beijing Initiative calls on all countries to carry out and strengthen 11 actions: fulfill political commitment and accountability; achieve "health in all policies" through multisectoral coordination; establish sustainable financing; empower communities and individuals; provide community-based integrated care; promote the connection and integration of health services and social services through good governance; enhance training, allocation and motivation of health workforce, and medical education; expand application of traditional and alternative medicine for disease prevention and illness healing; empower PHC with digital technology; ensure access to medicinal products and appropriate technologies; and last, strengthen global partnership and international health cooperation. The Initiative will enrich the content of quality development of PHC, build consensus, and put forward policies for quality development of PHC in China in the new era, which are expected to make contributions in accelerating global actions.

RESUMO

Net primary productivity (NPP) is an indicator to reflect the production capacity of terrestrial ecosystems, as well as a key indicator for ecological quality. NPP at large scale is difficult to be measured. At present, most of the assessment of ecosystem quality uses NPP products with low resolution, which cannot capture the detailed characteristics of the ecosystem and is not conducive to the assessment of ecosystem quality at small-scale. The establishment of a rapid and efficient assessment method for small-scale ecosystem quality will greatly promote the protection and restoration of ecosystems in China. We focused on the calculation method of ecosystem quality assessment and NPP, and optimized the calculation process of the NPP, and obtained NPP by remote sensing without ground observation data. We established a regression model for remote sensing inversion of leaf area index, and estimated the vegetation coverage by using dimidiate pixel model, developed a set of methods for rapid assessment of ecosystem quality by remote sensing. Taking Nanwenghe National Nature Reserve as an example, we evaluated the change of ecosystem quality from 2001 to 2022. The results showed that from 2001 to 2022, the ecosystem qua-lity of the reserve was good as a whole, and that the area with good and excellent quality accounted for more than 85% in 2022. High vegetation coverage was the backbone of the sustainable good ecosystem quality of the reserve. From 2001 to 2022, ecosystem quality of the reserve showed a trend of first decreasing and then increasing, with the lowest point of ecosystem quality in 2013. This method had achieved good results in the evaluation of ecosystem quality in Nanwenghe National Nature Reserve. The index optimization method proposed in this study could facilitate the rapid and accurate assessment of ecosystem quality in small-scale regions, and thus provides technical reference for the precise improvement of ecosystem quality.

RESUMO

The employment of stoichiometric alcohols and amines for imine synthesis under mild and green reaction conditions is still a challenge in the field. In this work, based on our research foundation in the thermocatalytic synthesis of imines over ceria, a CdS/CeO2 heterojunction photocatalyst was constructed and successfully realized the atom-economic synthesis of imines under visible light without additives at room temperature. Mechanistic experiments and corresponding characterizations indicated that the CdS/CeO2 heterojunction can improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, which can be further enhanced by the Ce4+/Ce3+ redox pair by rapidly combining photogenerated e-. The in situ-reduced Ce3+ can better activate O2 to form Ce-O-O·, which, together with h+, efficiently accelerates alcohol oxidation, which is the rate-determined step for the synthesis of imines via oxidative coupling reaction of alcohol and amine. In addition, our photocatalyst exhibited fairly decent reusability and substrate universality. This work solves problems of using base additives and excess amine or alcohol in the reported photocatalytic systems and provides new insight for designing CeO2-based photocatalytic oxidation catalysts.

RESUMO

The contribution of lateral carbon (C) to hydrological processes is well known for its ecological functions in the estuarine C budget across the terrestrial-aquatic interfaces. However, sampling of individual daily tides during multiple months or seasons in heterogeneous patches of landscape makes extrapolation from days to months or seasons challenging. In this paper, we examine the terrestrial-aquatic lateral hydrological C flux for an estuarine marsh where monthly tides, including consecutive daily spring tides, were measured over the course of an entire year. We found a significant correlation between imported and exported hydrological dissolved C, both dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), although a similar correlation was not found for particulate organic carbon (POC). Based on a total of 44 sampling trips over a year, this saltmarsh appeared to be a net exporter of DOC and DIC but a net sink of POC. Furthermore, the lateral hydrological C budget functioned as a limited lateral C sink in terms of organic C (i.e., ΔPOC and ΔDOC), while the marsh functioned as a small lateral C source. Our findings highlight the importance of lateral hydrologic inflows/outflows in wetland C budgets of land-water interfaces, especially in those characterized by the meta-ecosystem framework. Surprisingly, different C species responded unequally to the lateral hydrological C budget, suggesting that a conceptual realization of meta-ecosystem is a powerful theoretical framework to extend the outwelling hypothesis.

RESUMO

The development and utilization of new plant-fiber composite materials and microcellular foam molding processes for the manufacturing of automotive components are effective approaches when achieving the lightweight, low-carbon, and sustainable development of automobiles. However, current research in this field has mainly focused on component performance development and functional exploration, with a limited assessment of environmental performance, which fails to meet the requirements of the current green and sustainable development agenda. In this study, based on a life cycle assessment, the resource, and environmental impacts of plant-fiber composite material automotive components and microcellular foam molding processes were investigated. Furthermore, a combined approach to digital twinning and life cycle evaluation was proposed to conduct resource and environmental assessments and analysis. The research results indicate that under current technological conditions, resource and environmental issues associated with plant-fiber composite material automotive components are significantly higher than those of traditional material components, mainly due to differences in their early-stage processes and the consumption of electrical energy and chemical raw materials. It is noteworthy that electricity consumption is the largest influencing factor that causes environmental issues throughout the life cycle, especially accounting for more than 42% of indicators such as ozone depletion, fossil resource consumption, and carbon dioxide emissions. Additionally, the microcellular foam molding process can effectively reduce the environmental impact of products by approximately 15% and exhibits better overall environmental performance compared to chemical foaming. In future development, optimizing the forming process of plant-fiber composite materials, increasing the proportion of clean energy use, and promoting the adoption of microcellular foam injection molding processes could be crucial for the green and sustainable development of automotive components.

RESUMO

Impaired wound healing after trauma, disorders, and surgeries impact millions of people globally every year. Dysregulation in orchestrated healing mechanisms and underlying medical complications make chronic wound management extremely challenging. Besides standard-of-care treatments including broad spectrum antibiotics and wound-debridement, novel adjuvant therapies are clinically tested and commercialized. These include topical agents, skin substitutes, growth factor delivery, and stem cell therapies. With a goal to overcome factors playing pivotal role in delayed wound healing, researchers are exploring novel approaches to elicit desirable healing outcomes in chronic wounds. Although recent innovations in wound care products, therapies, and devices are extensively reviewed in past, a comprehensive review summarizing their clinical outcomes is surprisingly lacking. Herein, this work reviews the commercially available wound care products and their performance in clinical trials to provide a statistically comprehensive understanding of their safety and efficacy. The performance and suitability of various commercial wound care platforms, including xenogeneic and allogenic products, wound care devices, and novel biomaterials, are discussed for chronic wounds. The current clinical evaluation will provide a comprehensive understanding of the benefits and drawbacks of the most-recent approaches and will enable researchers and healthcare providers to develop next-generation technologies for chronic wound management.

RESUMO

With the continous advancement of industrialization, the environmental problems among resource-based cities in China are becoming increasingly serious. Therefore, exploring the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of industrial agglomeration and environmental pollution to understand the interaction mechanism between them is of great significance for the coordinated development of resource-based cities. In this paper, 114 resource-based cities in China are selected as research objects, and data from the period of 2011 to 2020 are used for analysis and research. Location entropy and entropy weight models are used to measure the relevant indicators, and a spatial simultaneous equation model is constructed. The generalized spatial three-stage least squares (GS3SLS) method is used to assess the spatial interactive spillover effects of industrial agglomeration on environmental pollution. The research results show that ① the industrial agglomeration center of China has begun to shift to the junction of Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Inner Mongolia, and the level of environmental pollution has dropped significantly; ② industrial agglomeration promotes environmental pollution, while environmental pollution inhibits industrial agglomeration, and between them, the inhibition effect is more obvious; ③ the level of industrial agglomeration in surrounding cities promotes industrial agglomeration in the region and inhibits environmental pollution, while the level of environmental pollution in surrounding cities inhibits industrial agglomeration in the region and promotes the diffusion of pollution. Thus, the building of a coordinated development system across regions can achieve a win-win situation between industrial development and environmental protection.

RESUMO

The protozoa Cryptosporidium and Giardia are major causes of diarrhea and are commonly found on vegetables in China. They pose a health risk, particularly to immunocompromised individuals, including cancer patients. A quantitative microbial risk assessment of Chinese data evaluated the risks of Cryptosporidium and Giardia exposure arising from the application of surface water and septic tank effluent to agricultural land. Exposure via agricultural produce consumption (consumers) and agricultural practices (farmers) was considered for subpopulations of cancer patients and immunocompetent people in urban and rural areas, and risk mitigation scenarios were modelled. The cumulative disease burdens attributable to cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis were, respectively, 9.68×10-6 and 5.57×10-5 disability-adjusted life years per person per year (DALYs pppy) for immunocompetent people, and 3.14×10-5 and 1.51×10-4 DALYs pppy for cancer patients. Cancer patients were approximately three times more likely to have an individual disease burden than immunocompetent people. The disease burden was higher for consumers than farmers, and higher in rural areas than urban areas (all exceeding the maximum recommended by the World Health Organization). The highest burdens were in provinces of high population, such as Henan, Guangdong, and Sichuan, while the burden associated with human and livestock fecal effluent application was higher than with surface water irrigation. Of the three vegetables studied, lettuce posed the greatest risk, followed by bok choy, while cucumber posed the least risk. Risk mitigation scenario analysis showed that pre-treatment of surface water and feces, and appropriate post-harvest handling of vegetables, including disinfection, cooking, and adequate surface heat treatment (75 °C for 60 s), should be considered when attempting to reduce disease burdens. The methodology and findings of this study are useful for evaluating and reducing the burden of Cryptosporidium and Giardia infections associated with agricultural irrigation and fertilization practices, particularly on cancer patients.

RESUMO

Cryptosporidium and Giardia (major causes of diarrhea) are widely distributed in Chinese source waters and threaten human health. A new spatially explicit GloWPa-TGR-Crypt-Giar C1 model is presented to simultaneously estimate mean monthly (oo)cyst concentrations in surface and ground waters in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) watershed. A quantitative risk assessment of protozoal infections considered different source waters, transmission pathways, regions, susceptible subpopulations, and drinking water treatments. Monthly mean Cryptosporidium oocyst and Giardia cyst concentrations ranged between 0.5-19.3 oocysts/10 L and 0.2-5.0 cysts/10 L in surface water, respectively, and 0.007-0.3 oocysts/10 L and 0.002-0. 2 cysts/10 L in groundwater. The cumulative disease burdens attributable to cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis were, respectively, 5.77×10-5 DALYs (disability-adjusted life years/person/year) and 4.63×10-6 DALYs in urban areas, and 6.35×10-4 DALYs and 8.84×10-5 DALYs in rural areas, which were much higher than the reference risk level recommended by the World Health Organization ([Formula: see text] DALYs). The annual burden associated with consuming surface water was calculated to be 3.84×10-4 DALYs for Cryptosporidium and [Formula: see text] DALYs for Giardia, whereas consuming groundwater entailed the lower burdens (1.26×10-5 and 3.50×10-6 DALYs, respectively). Most DALYs were a consequence of consumption of directly supplied surface water. Fifty percent of the health burden was carried by immunodeficiency with HIV. Children (0-4 years) were more likely to have an individual disease burden than adults (15-64 years). Males were more susceptible than females. Improving sanitation through adequate ozone and microfiltration treatment should be considered when attempting to reduce disease burden. Sensitivity analysis highlighted the importance of reducing (oo)cyst loads to protect the watershed. The methodology and results described will help in evaluating and reducing the burden of protozoal infection associated with surface and ground waters in the TGR and similar watersheds.

RESUMO

Objective: The study aimed to analyze the applicability of the World Health Organization's exclusionary guidelines for Urinary creatinine (Ucr) in the general Chinese population, and to identify Ucr related factors. Methods: We conduct a cross-sectional study using baseline data from 21,167 participants in the China National Human Biomonitoring Program. Mixed linear models and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to analyze the associations between explanatory variables and Ucr concentration. Results: The geometric mean and median concentrations of Ucr in the general Chinese population were 0.90 g/L and 1.01 g/L, respectively. And 9.36% samples were outside 0.3-3.0 g/L, including 7.83% below the lower limit and 1.53% above the upper limit. Middle age, male, obesity, smoking, higher frequency of red meat consumption and chronic kidney disease were associated significantly with higher concentrations of Ucr. Results of the RCS showed Ucr was positively and linearly associated with body mass index, inversely and linearly associated with systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides level, and glomerular filtration rate, and were non-linearly associated with triiodothyronine. Conclusion: The age- and gender-specific cut-off values of Ucr that determine the validity of urine samples in the general Chinese population were recommended. To avoid introducing bias into epidemiologic associations, the potential predictors of Ucr observed in the current study should be considered when using Ucr to adjust for variations in urine dilution.

RESUMO

Although exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been associated with cognitive decline, little is known about which PM2.5 constituents are more harmful. Recent study on the association between PM2.5 and sleep quality prompted us to propose that sleep quality may mediate the adverse effects of PM2.5 components on cognitive decline. Understanding the association between PM2.5 constituents and cognitive function, as well as the mediating role of sleep quality provides a future intervention target for improving cognitive function. Using data involving 1834 participants from a multicenter cross-sectional study in nine cities of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region in China, we undertook multivariable linear regression analyses to quantify the association of annual moving-average PM2.5 and its chemical constituents with cognitive function and to assess the modifying role of exposure characteristic in this association. Besides, we examined the extent to which this association of PM2.5 constituents with cognitive function was mediated via sleep quality by a mediation analysis. We observed significantly negative associations between an increase of one interquartile range increase in PM2.5 [-0.876 (95 % CI: -1.205, -0.548)], organic carbon [-0.481 (95 % CI: -0.744, -0.219)], potassium [-0.344 (95 % CI: -0.530, -0.157)], iron [-0.468 (95 % CI: -0.646, -0.291)], and ammonium ion [-0.125 (95 % CI: -0.197, -0.052)] and cognitive decline. However, we didn't find any individual components more harmful than PM2.5. Poor sleep quality partially mediated the estimated associations, which were explained ranging from 2.28 % to 11.99 %. Stratification analyses showed that people living in areas with lower greenspace were more susceptible to specific PM2.5 components. Our study suggests that the adverse effect of suffering from PM2.5 components is more pronounced among individuals with poor sleep quality, amplifying environmental inequalities in health. Besides reducing environmental pollution, improving sleep quality may be another measure worth considering to improve cognition if our research is confirmed in the future.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chemical pesticides have defects in crop diseases control, such as narrow antimicrobial spectrum, chemicals residue risk and harm to farmland ecosystem. Antimicrobial agents from microbial sources are highly interested in agriculture. Studies showed that rhamnolipid biosurfactants possessed certain antimicrobial activity. The structural differences in rhamnolipid inevitably affect their activities. But the antimicrobial effect of mono-rhamnolipid and di-rhamnolipid is unknown. Rhamnolipid with unique structure can be produced using specific microbial cell factory. RESULTS: Different types of rhamnolipid were produced from different Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains. Rha-C10-C10 and Rha-Rha-C10-C10 were the main homologues in the separated mono-rhamnolipid and di-rhamnolipid, respectively. Both mono-rhamnolipid and di-rhamnolipid exhibited certain antimicrobial activity against the tested microbial strains, especially the fungi and Gram-positive bacteria. But mono-rhamnolipid was superior to di-rhamnolipid, with inhibition zone diameters larger than 25 mm and inhibition rate higher than 90%. The IC50 values of mono-rhamnolipid were lower than 5 mg/L against the tested bacterium and fungus, whereas the IC50 values of di-rhamnolipid were ranged from 10 mg/L to 20 mg/L. Mono-rhamnolipid stimulated the tested strains to generate higher level of intracellular ROS. Mono-rhamnolipid exhibited better antimicrobial activity to the potential agricultural pathogens, such as Alternaria alternata, Pantoea agglomerans and Cladosporium sp. The mono-rhamnolipid crude extract of strain P. aeruginosa SGΔrhlC can replace the separated mono-rhamnolipid. After 50 times dilution, the fermentation broth of the mono-rhamnolipid producing strain SGΔrhlC exhibited equal antimicrobial effect to mono-rhamnolipid (200 mg/L). Prospects of mono-rhamnolipid were also discussed for antimicrobial applications in agriculture. CONCLUSIONS: This work discovered that mono-rhamnolipid was superior to di-rhamnolipid on antimicrobial activity for agricultural applications. Mono-rhamnolipid is an excellent candidate for agricultural biocontrol. The knockout strain P. aeruginosa SGΔrhlC is an excellent microbial cell factory for high producing mono-rhamnolipid. Its mono-rhamnolipid crude extract and its diluted fermentation broth are cost-effective antimicrobial agents. This work provided new insights to develop green and efficient antimicrobial agents for agricultural applications.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Vibrio parahaemolyticus is the main foodborne pathogen worldwide that causes acute gastroenteritis. A quantitative microbiological risk assessment (QMRA) was conducted to evaluate the health risk associated with V. parahaemolyticus in shellfish in the coastal cities in the eastern part of the People's Republic of China. The QMRA framework was established from shellfish at retail to cooking at home to consumption. The prevalence and level of V. parahaemolyticus in shellfish, cooking methods, storage temperature, time after purchase, shellfish consumption frequency, and consumption amount were analyzed in the exposure assessment. The results of the exposure assessment were introduced into the beta-Poisson dose-response model, and Monte Carlo analysis was used to calculate the risk of gastroenteritis from shellfish consumption. The probability of illness caused by V. parahaemolyticus from shellfish consumption per person per year (Pill,yr) was 3.49E-05. Seasonal differences were noted in the Pill/meal; the maximum was 4.81E-06 in summer and the minimum was 2.27E-07 in winter. The sensitivity analysis revealed that the level of V. parahaemolyticus in shellfish and the amount of shellfish consumed per meal were main factors contributing to illness. This QMRA provided valuable information such as the probability of illness associated with the consumption of shellfish and reference points for prevention strategies and control standards of V. parahaemolyticus in shellfish.

RESUMO

In preparation for personalized nutrition, an accurate assessment of dietary intakes on key essential nutrients using smartphones can help promote health and reduce health risks across vulnerable populations. We, therefore, validated the accuracy of a mobile application (app) against Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) using artificial intelligence (AI) machine-learning-based analytics, assessing key macro- and micro-nutrients across various modern diets. We first used Bland and Altman analysis to identify and visualize the differences between the two measures. We then applied AI-based analytics to enhance prediction accuracy, including generalized regression to identify factors that contributed to the differences between the two measures. The mobile app underestimated most macro- and micro-nutrients compared to FFQ (ranges: -5% for total calories, -19% for cobalamin, -33% for vitamin E). The average correlations between the two measures were 0.87 for macro-nutrients and 0.84 for micro-nutrients. Factors that contributed to the differences between the two measures using total calories as an example, included caloric range (1000-2000 versus others), carbohydrate, and protein; for cobalamin, included caloric range, protein, and Chinese diet. Future studies are needed to validate actual intakes and reporting of various diets, and to examine the accuracy of mobile App. Thus, a mobile app can be used to support personalized nutrition in the mHealth era, considering adjustments with sources that could contribute to the inaccurate estimates of nutrients.

RESUMO

Clarifying the regional natural capital utilization and its spatial effects and influencing factors has important theoretical and practical significance for regional sustainable development. Here, we used a three-dimensional ecological footprint model, exploratory spatial data analysis, a spatial Markov chain, and a spatial panel Durbin model to explore the spatial effects and influencing factors of overall and subcategory natural capital flow and stock occupancy of 112 prefecture-level cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2008 to 2018. The results showed that the total, per capita, and subcategory natural capital flow and stock occupancy increased during the study period. Most of the regions with low overall and subcategory natural flow occupancy were located in the East, whereas most of the regions with high overall and subcategory natural flow occupancy were mostly located in the Central and Wes-tern area. However, their stock occupancy behaved differently. Except for farmland stock, the overall and subcategory natural capital flow and stock occupancy showed spatial agglomeration. The traditional and spatial Markov chain presented a "Matthew effect" and a "spatial spillover effect" in natural capital flow and stock occupancy. Economic growth and industrial structure positively affected natural capital flow and stock occupancy. Population growth positively affected natural capital flow occupancy. Urbanization rate negatively affected natural capital flow occupancy, and positively impacted natural capital stock occupancy. Government intervention negatively affected the farmland flow and fossil fuels land stock occupancy. Environmental governance negatively affected the natural capital flow occupancy, but positively affected the natural capital stock occupancy. Environmental pollution positively affected natural capital flow and stock occupancy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity refers to uncertain access to food on a consistent basis and the stress experienced by families who worry about having sufficient resources to provide balanced meals in their households. Food insecurity has a disproportionate influence on people of color. A robust body of evidence links food insecurity to poor health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To document experiences of food insecurity among linguistically and ethnically diverse residents of the East Harlem neighborhood of New York City by exploring the ways in which food availability and cost intersect with household budgets, personal preferences, and shopping strategies. DESIGN: In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with adult residents of New York City's East Harlem neighborhood to provide insights about the links between food insecurity, well-being, and quality of life. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: Thirty-seven adult residents of East Harlem were recruited through purposive sampling. Eligibility requirements included living in an East Harlem zip code (10029 or 10035); being aged 18 years or older; being the main food shopper and food decision-maker in the household; and speaking English, Spanish, or Mandarin Chinese. The study was conducted from February to May 2018. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED: Interviews were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. Codes were organized into broad thematic topics and cross-case analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Participants discussed overall perceptions of food insecurity and seven themes related to the challenges of and strategies for coping with food insecurity: intermittent vs chronic food insecurity, shopping and budgeting strategies, pantries as a vital community resource, social support systems, food insecurity and health, frustration with an unjust system, and pride in "making it work." CONCLUSIONS: To manage food insecurity, many study participants carefully managed food spending, dedicated substantial time to visiting stores and accessing food pantries, and relied on a public benefits cycle that left many without sufficient financial resources at the end of each month.

RESUMO

Propper assessment of hemodynamic swirling flow patterns, vortices, may help understand the influence of disturbed flow on arterial wall pathophysiology and remodeling. Studies have shown that vortices trigger pathologic cellular changes within the vasculature such as increased inflammation and cellular apoptosis, leading to weakening of the vessel wall indicative of aneurysm development and rupture. Yet many studies qualitatively assess the presence of vortices within the vasculature or assess only their centermost region (critical point analysis) which overlooks the broader characteristics of flow, leading to a narrow view of vortices. This chapter provides a protocol for utilizing commercially available computational fluid dynamic software (ANSYS-FLUENT) to simulate realistic hemodynamic flow patterns, fluid velocity, and wall shear stress in the complex geometry of the cerebral vasculature, as well as an innovative method for assessing flow vortices. This innovative analytic methodology can identify areas of flow vortices and quantify how the broader bulk-flow (opposed to critical point) characteristics change in space and time over the cardiac cycle. Analysis of such flow structures can be used to identify specific characteristics such as vortex stability and the portion of an aneurysmal sac that is dominated by swirling flow, which may be indicative of vascular pathologies.

RESUMO

Acinetobacter has been frequently detected in backwater areas of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) region. We here employed Caenorhabditis elegans to perform biosafety assessment of Acinetobacter strains isolated from backwater area in the TGR region. Among 21 isolates and 5 reference strains of Acinetobacter, exposure to Acinetobacter strains of AC1, AC15, AC18, AC21, A. baumannii ATCC 19606T, A. junii NH88-14, and A. lwoffii DSM 2403T resulted in significant decrease in locomotion behavior and reduction in lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans. In nematodes, exposure to Acinetobacter strains of AC1, AC15, AC18, AC21, A. baumannii, A. junii and A. lwoffii also resulted in significant reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Moreover, exposure to Acinetobacter isolates of AC1, AC15, AC18, and AC21 led to significant increase in expressions of both SOD-3::GFP and some antimicrobial genes (lys-1, spp-12, lys-7, dod-6, spp-1, dod-22, lys-8, and/or F55G11.4) in nematodes. The Acinetobacter isolates of AC1, AC15, AC18, and AC21 had different morphological, biochemical, phylogenetical, and virulence gene properties. Our results suggested that exposure risk of some Acinetobacter strains isolated from the TGR region exists for environmental organisms and human health. In addition, C. elegans is useful to assess biosafety of Acinetobacter isolates from the environment.

RESUMO

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is persistent in the environment. The activities of microorganisms alone are insufficient for the decomposition of PFOA, but microorganisms can contribute positively to the degradation of PFOA in synergistic systems. Herein, a synergistic system combining photocatalytic decay with microbial degradation of the transformation products was applied to degrade 500.0 µg L-1 PFOA. The microorganisms increased the total removed percentage by 30.7% to a final percentage of 79.7 ± 9.4% in comparison with the photocatalytic method alone. Moreover, an additional 44.2% of removed total organic carbon and additional defluorination percentage of 24.5% were obtained after the synergistic tests. The 16S RNA sequencing analysis indicated that Stenotrophomonas, Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Brevundimonas were highly enriched in the functional microbial community, which was simultaneously shaped by photocatalysis and substances. This study found it would be feasible to use a synergistic method containing photocatalysis and a microbial community for the degradation of low-concentrations of PFOA, and the results provided a reference to modified the removal efficiency of the synergistic system by looking insight into the relationship between the functional microbial community and PFOA.
