RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of orthognathic surgery on masseter volume in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion with facial asymmetry and the effect of masseter volume on stability in orthognathic surgery. METHODS: This research studied 16 patients with Class III malocclusion with facial asymmetry who received combined orthodontic-orthognathic treatment and underwent craniofacial computed tomography (CT) before (T0), 2 weeks after (T1), and 6 months after (T2) surgery. Three-dimensional (3D) CT images were retrospectively analyzed, using 3D volume reconstruction to obtain the masseter volume and examine the impact of the masseter volume on stability in orthognathic surgery. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) in the volume of the masseter was found up to 6 months after orthognathic surgery compared with the preoperative period, and the reduction in the masticatory muscle volume on the lengthened side is greater than on the shortened side (P < 0.05). The volume of both masseters differed according to facial asymmetry, and the difference was significantly reduced after orthognathic surgery (P < 0.05). During the period time (T1-T2), cephalometric maxillary marker points were not significantly different (P > 0.05), and mandibular marker points were significantly anteriorly shifted (P < 0.05). There was an association between the masseter volume and anterior shift of point B (R > 0.5, P < 0.05), the upward and anterior shifts of the gonion point differed between the lengthened and shortened sides (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The size of the masseter becomes smaller 6 months after orthognathic surgery, and orthognathic surgery improves both bone and soft tissue symmetry. A larger sagittal relapse of mandibular setback occurred in patients with greater masseter volume. Considering these alterations may be helpful in planning orthognathic surgery.

RESUMO

Although the ecological risk of emerging contaminants is currently a research hotspot in China and abroad, few studies have investigated the ecological risk of pesticide pollutants in Chinese coastal sediments. In this study, nine pesticide pollutants included in the "List of New Key Pollutants for Control (2023 Edition)" issued by the Chinese government were used as the research objects, and the environmental exposure of pesticide pollutants in China's coastal sediments was analyzed. The baseline sediment quality criteria were deduced using the balanced distribution method, and a multi-level ecological risk assessment of pesticides in sediment was performed. The results showed that the nine pesticide pollutants were widespread in Chinese coastal sediments, with concentrations ranging from 0.01 ng·g-1 to 330 ng·g-1. The risk quotient assessment showed that endosulfan and DDT posed medium environmental risks to the Chinese coastal sediment environment, and PCBs posed medium risks in some bays of the East China Sea. The semi-probabilistic, optimized semi-probability evaluation and joint probability curve (JPC) assessments all show that endosulfan and DDT pose a certain degree of risk to the environment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Consuming ultra-processed foods may increase exposure to phthalates, a group of endocrine disruptors prevalent in food contact materials. OBJECTIVES: Investigate associations between ultra-processed food intake and urinary phthalates during pregnancy, and evaluate whether ultra-processed foods mediate socioeconomic disparities in phthalate exposures. METHODS: In a socioeconomically diverse sample of 1031 pregnant women from the Conditions Affecting Neurocognitive Development and Learning in Early Childhood (CANDLE) Study in the urban South, the Block Food Frequency Questionnaire was administered and urinary phthalate metabolites were measured in the second trimester. Linear regressions modeled associations between phthalates and overall ultra-processed food consumption, individual ultra-processed foods, and exploratory factor analysis dietary patterns. Causal mediation analyses examined whether ultra-processed food intake mediates relationships between socioeconomic disparities and phthalate exposures. RESULTS: Ultra-processed foods constituted 9.8-59.0 % (mean = 38.6 %) of participants' diets. 10 % higher dietary proportion of ultra-processed foods was associated with 13.1 % (95 %CI: 3.4 %-22.9 %) higher molar sum concentrations of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate metabolites (ΣDEHP). 10 % higher consumption of minimally-processed foods was associated with lower ΣDEHP (10.8 %: 3.4 %-22.9 %). Ultra- and minimally-processed food consumption were not associated with non-DEHP metabolites. Standard deviation higher consumptions of hamburger/cheeseburger, French fries, soda, and cake were associated with 10.5 % (4.2 %-17.1 %), 9.2 % (2.6 %-16.2 %), 7.4 % (1.4 %-13.6 %), and 6.0 % (0.0 %-12.4 %), respectively, higher ΣDEHP. Exploratory factor analysis corroborated positive associations of processed food with ΣDEHP, and uncovered a healthy dietary pattern associated with lower urinary ΣDEHP, mono(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) (MEHHP), mono(2-ethyl-5-carboxypentyl) (MECPP), mono(2-carboxymethylhexyl) (MCMHP), and mono-isononyl (MINP) phthalates. Significant indirect effects indicated that lower income and education levels were associated with 1.9 % (0.2 %-4.2 %) and 1.4 % (0.1 %-3.3 %) higher ΣDEHP, respectively, mediated via increased ultra-processed food consumption. CONCLUSIONS: Consumption of ultra-processed foods may increase exposure to phthalates. Policies to reduce dietary phthalate exposures from food packaging and processing are needed, as socioeconomic barriers can preclude dietary recommendations as a sole means to reduce phthalate exposures.

RESUMO

People in many societies report that they do not have enough time. What makes people feel so rushed? We propose that economic inequality leads to perceived time poverty by increasing status anxiety. Five studies examined this line of reasoning. Study 1 (N = 230) found a positive correlation between economic inequality and perceived time poverty. Study 2 (N = 194) manipulated economic inequality to test the causal link between economic inequality and perceived time poverty. The results showed that people perceived more time poverty in the high (vs. low) economic inequality condition. Study 3 (N = 381) supported the mediating role of status anxiety in the relationship between economic inequality and perceived time poverty using a questionnaire survey. Study 4 (pre-registered; N = 283) manipulated economic inequality in an ecological valid way and yielded further support for the hypotheses. In pre-registered Study 5 (N = 233), a blockage manipulation design was employed to test the mediating effect of status anxiety as a function of economic inequality, which provided causal evidence for the proposed mediator. Our findings suggest that economic inequality serves as a structural societal factor that fuels people's perception of time poverty.

RESUMO

A total of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in 28 soil column samples from two contaminated industrial sites in Eastern China. The total concentration of 16 PAHs (∑PAHs) in the surface soil (0-20 cm) was measured up to 52,600 ng/g (dry weight basis) with a remarkable spatial difference in the studied contaminated sites. The concentrations of the ∑PAHs in soils decreased with the increase in soil depth (0-10 m). The surface and subsurface soil presented a tenfold higher concentration than the soil with depth greater than 4 m. Additionally, the vertical migration tendency of the PAHs was found to be correlated significantly with their hydrophobicity (R2 = 0.79, P < 0.01). Naphthalene (with lowest octanol-water partition coefficient among the studied PAHs) showed the greatest average soil depth at which its peak concentration occurred. Furthermore, risk quotient analysis by using benzo[a]pyrene as reference compound showed that 71.4% of the samples exhibited high ecological risk for soil. Moreover, the total carcinogenic risk of the PAHs in the surface soil samples was assessed at 5.61 × 10-5-1.28 × 10-4 and 4.41 × 10-6-9.43 × 10-5 for male and female workers, respectively, in which 67.9%-71.4% of the samples showed potential risk. Generally, these results suggest a further consideration of ecological and health risks associated with PAHs in contaminated sites in Eastern China.

RESUMO

The global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a massive impact on global social and economic development and human health. By combining traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with modern medicine, the Chinese government has protected public health by supporting all phases of COVID-19 prevention and treatment, including community prevention, clinical treatment, control of disease progression, and promotion of recovery. Modern medicine focuses on viruses, while TCM focuses on differential diagnosis of patterns associated with viral infection of the body and recommends the use of TCM decoctions for differential treatment. This differential diagnosis and treatment approach, with its profoundly empirical nature and holistic view, endows TCM with an accessibility advantage and high application value for dealing with COVID-19. Here, we summarize the advantage of and evidence for TCM use in COVID-19 prevention and treatment to draw attention to the scientific value and accessibility advantage of TCM and to promote the use of TCM in response to public health emergencies. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether women's exposure to multiple types of violence during childhood and pregnancy was associated with children's BMI trajectories and whether parenting quality moderated those associations. METHODS: A cohort of 1288 women who gave birth between 2006 and 2011 self-reported their exposure to childhood traumatic events, intimate partner violence (IPV), and residential address (linked to geocoded index of violent crime) during pregnancy. Children's length/height and weight at birth and at age 1, 2, 3, 4 to 6, and 8 years were converted to BMI z scores. Observed mother-child interactions were behaviorally coded during a dyadic teaching task. RESULTS: Covariate-adjusted growth mixture models identified three trajectories of children's BMI from birth to 8 years old: Low-Stable (17%), Moderate-Stable (59%), and High-Rising (22%). Children whose mothers experienced more types of IPV during pregnancy were more likely to be in the High-Rising than the Low-Stable (odds ratio [OR] = 2.62; 95% CI: 1.27-5.41) trajectory. Children whose mothers lived in higher crime neighborhoods were more likely to be in the High-Rising than the Low-Stable (OR = 1.11; 95% CI:1.03-1.17) or Moderate-Stable trajectories (OR = 1.08; CI: 1.03-1.13). Main effects of childhood traumatic events and moderation by parenting were not detected. CONCLUSIONS: Maternal experiences of violence during pregnancy increase children's risk for developing overweight, highlighting intergenerational transmission of social adversity in children's health.

RESUMO

Obesity is a metabolic syndrome characterized by abnormal lipid deposition and energy imbalance. CD38 is a single-chain transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed in a variety of cell types. The roles of skeletal muscle and brown fat in CD38 deficiency under HFD-induced obesity remain unknown. In this study, we established obesity model with HFD and examined the changes in metabolites with metabonomics. Our results showed that CD38 expression was increased in muscle and brown fat after HFD treatment. Moreover, the results of metabonomics showed that CD38 deficiency significantly altered the metabolites in energy metabolism, cofactor generation, and redox homeostasis. Furthermore, CD38 deficiency reduced the expressions of NADPH oxidase 2 and FASN in mRNA level. We found that the expressions of Sirt1, Sirt3, and PGC1α were upregulated in CD38-deficient muscle tissue. In brown fat, the Sirt1-3, cell death inducing DFFA-like effector A, ELOVL3, and Dio2 expressions were increased in CD38-deficient mice. Our results showed the uncoupling protein 1 expression was upregulated. And NAD+ supplementation increased the expression of Sirt1 and PGC1α after palmitic acid treatment. Taken together, our results demonstrated that the protection of CD38 deficiency on HFD-induced obesity was related to the inhibition of oxidative stress and increasing energy expenditure via activating NAD+/Sirtuins signaling pathways in muscle and brown fat.

RESUMO

The synergistic activation of persulfate by multiple factors could degrade pollutants more efficiently. However, the co-activation method based on metal ions has the risk of leakage. The non-metallic coupling method could achieve the same efficiency as the metal activation and meanwhile release environmental stress. In this study, the original biochar (BC) was prepared through using Chinese medicinal residue of Acanthopanax senticosus as the precursor. Compared with other biochar, the pore size structure was higher and toxicity risk was lower. The ultrasonic (US)/Acanthopanax senticosus biochar (ASBC)/persulfate oxidation system was established for Atrazine (ATZ). Results showed that 45KHz in middle and low frequency band cooperated with ASBC600 to degrade nearly 70 % of ATZ within 50 min, and US promoted the formation of SO4- and OH. Meanwhile, the synergy index of US and ASBC was calculated to be 1.18, which showed positive synergistic effect. Finally, the potential toxicity was examined by using Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) and luminescent bacteria. This study provides a promising way for the activation of persulfate, which is expected to bring a new idea for the win-win situation of pollutant degradation and solid waste resource utilization.

RESUMO

Importance: Dengue fever is a climate-sensitive infectious disease. However, its association with local hydrological conditions and the role of city development remain unclear. Objective: To quantify the association between hydrological conditions and dengue fever incidence in China and to explore the modification role of city development in this association. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cross-sectional study collected data between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2019, from 54 cities in 4 coastal provinces in southeast China. The Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) was calculated from ambient temperature and precipitation, with SPEI thresholds of 2 for extreme wet conditions and -2 for extreme dry conditions. The SPEI-dengue fever incidence association was examined over a 6-month lag, and the modification roles of 5 city development dimensions were assessed. Data were analyzed in May 2022. Exposures: City-level monthly temperature, precipitation, SPEI, and annual city development indicators from 2013 to 2019. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was city-level monthly dengue fever incidence. Spatiotemporal bayesian hierarchal models were used to examine the SPEI-dengue fever incidence association over a 6-month lag period. An interaction term between SPEI and each city development indicator was added into the model to assess the modification role of city development. Results: Included in the analysis were 70 006 dengue fever cases reported in 54 cities in 4 provinces in China from 2013 to 2019. Overall, a U-shaped cumulative curve was observed, with wet and dry conditions both associated with increased dengue fever risk. The relative risk [RR] peaked at a 1-month lag for extreme wet conditions (1.27; 95% credible interval [CrI], 1.05-1.53) and at a 6-month lag for extreme dry conditions (1.63; 95% CrI, 1.29-2.05). The RRs of extreme wet and dry conditions were greater in areas with limited economic development, health care resources, and income per capita. Extreme dry conditions were higher and prolonged in areas with more green space per capita (RR, 1.84; 95% CrI, 1.37-2.46). Highly urbanized areas had a higher risk of dengue fever after extreme wet conditions (RR, 1.80; 95% CrI, 1.26-2.56), while less urbanized areas had the highest risk of dengue fever in extreme dry conditions (RR, 1.70; 95% CrI, 1.11-2.60). Conclusions and Relevance: Results of this study showed that extreme hydrological conditions were associated with increased dengue fever incidence within a 6-month lag period, with different dimensions of city development playing various modification roles in this association. These findings may help in developing climate change adaptation strategies and public health interventions against dengue fever.

RESUMO

Posttranslational modifications are important for protein functions and cellular signaling pathways. The acetylation of lysine residues is catalyzed by histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and removed by histone deacetylases (HDACs), with the latter being grouped into four phylogenetic classes. The class III of the HDAC family, the sirtuins (SIRTs), contributes to gene expression, genomic stability, cell metabolism, and tumorigenesis. Thus, several specific SIRT inhibitors (SIRTi) have been developed to target cancer cell proliferation. Here we provide an overview of methods to study SIRT-dependent cell metabolism and mitochondrial functionality. The chapter describes metabolic flux analysis using Seahorse analyzers, methods for normalization of Seahorse data, flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy to determine the mitochondrial membrane potential, mitochondrial content per cell and mitochondrial network structures, and Western blot analysis to measure mitochondrial proteins.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Elimination of hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a striking challenge for countries with high or moderate disease burden. Therefore, using China as a practical case to share experiences for similar countries may accelerate the achievement of the WHO 2030 target of 90% reduction in HBV-related incidence. We aim to evaluate the impact of national HBV immunization strategies in China; and the feasibility to achieve WHO 2030 targets under different scenarios. METHODS: We constructed an expanded Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered (SEIR) model and decision tree-Markov model to estimate the epidemic of HBV in China, assess the feasibility of 2030 Elimination Goals through the projections and conduct the economic analysis. Least square method was used to calibrate the expanded SEIR model by yearly data of laboratory-confirmed HBV cases from 1990 to 2018. Two models were separately used to evaluate the impact and cost-effectiveness of HBV vaccine by comparing prevalence of chronic HBV infections, quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs), incremental cost effectiveness ratio and benefit-cost ratio (BCR) under various intervention options, providing a basis for exploring new containment strategies. RESULTS: Between 1990 and 2020, the number of chronic HBV infections decreased by 33.9%. The current status quo would lead to 55.73 million infections (3.95% prevalence) in 2030, compared to 90.63 million (6.42% prevalence) of the "Without the NIP" scenario (NIP: National Immunization Program), 114.78 million (8.13% prevalence) without any interventions. The prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) strategy showed a net benefit as 12,283.50 dollars per person, with BCR as 12.66, which is higher than that of universal vaccination at 9.49. Compared with no screening and no vaccination, the PMTCT strategy could save 7726.03 dollars for each QALY increase. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings proved the HBV vaccination has demonstrated a substantial positive impact on controlling the epidemic of HBV in terms of effectiveness and economy after about 30 years of implementation of the national hepatitis B immunization program which also provided containment experience for high or medium burden countries. As for China, the next step should focus on exploring strategies to improve diagnosis and treatment coverage to reduce the burden of HBV-related deaths and ultimately eliminate HBV.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the occupational health status of workers exposed to dust and the risk factors of lung function decline, to provide a basis for formulating corresponding occupational disease-prevention strategies. METHODS: Data on 2045 workers exposed to dust, including their age, gender, exposure time, chest X-ray test results, and pulmonary function test results, were obtained from a key occupational disease monitoring project in Chongqing, China, in 2021. Chi-square tests and multifactorial logistic regression, and other methods, were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The prevalence of pneumoconiosis-like changes was 0.83% (17/2045), and the prevalence of abnormal forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and FEV1/FVC was 4.25% (87/2045), 12.81% (262/2045), and 1.47% (30/2045), respectively. With increasing worker's age, the prevalence of abnormal pneumoconiosis-like changes (p = 0.0065), FEV1 (p = 0.0002), FVC (p < 0.0001), and FEV1/FVC (p = 0.0055) all increased. Factors such as age, exposure duration, enterprise size, and dust exposure concentration were associated with abnormal lung function. CONCLUSIONS: Workers exposed to occupational dust have a high rate of abnormal lung function. The government, enterprises, and individuals should pay attention to occupational dust exposure, and various effective measures should be actively taken to protect the life and health of workers.

RESUMO

Melamine (MEL) and its derivatives, ammeline (AMN), ammelide (AMD), cyanuric acid (CYA) are widely existed in environmental media. Animal studies have reported the cumulative risk assessment (CRA) of simultaneous exposure to MEL and its derivatives and explored the associations between exposure and routine blood parameters. Such information is largely unknown in human studies. In this study, we detected the urinary concentrations of MEL and its derivatives in 239 Chinese adults to conduct the CRA by evaluating their hazard quotients (HQ) and hazard Index (HI), and also explored the possible associations between exposure and measured routine blood parameters in study population. The detectable frequencies of MEL, AMN, AMD and CYA were 96.65%, 41.00%, 97.91% and 97.07%, respectively. The median values of creatinine (Cr)-adjusted MEL, AMN, AMD, CYA and the total concentrations of MEL and its derivatives (∑MEL) were 11.41 µg/g Cr, not detected (ND), 2.64 µg/g Cr, 15.30 µg/g Cr, 35.02 µg/g Cr, respectively. There were 9 (3.77%) participants with estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of CYA exceeding the tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 2500 ng/kg bw/day, and 12 (5.02%) participants with HI of ∑MEL exposure exceeding 1 based on the strictest TDI value. Urinary concentrations of MEL and its derivatives were positively associated with specific routine blood parameters, including hematocrit, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, white blood cell, neutrophil count (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, exposure to MEL and its derivatives increased the risk of red blood cell abnormality (P < 0.05). Our study is the first study to provide evidence-based data on the CRA of exposure to MEL and its derivatives in Chinese adults, and to propose a possible association between such exposure and routine blood parameters in human.

RESUMO

Inferring gene regulatory networks (GRNs) from microarray data can help us understand the mechanisms of life and eventually develop effective therapies. Currently, many computational methods have been used in inferring GRNs. However, owing to high-dimensional data and small samples, these methods often tend to introduce redundant regulatory relationships. Therefore, a novel network inference method based on the improved Markov blanket discovery algorithm, IMBDANET, is proposed to infer GRNs. Specifically, for each target gene, data processing inequality was applied to the Markov blanket discovery algorithm for the accurate differentiation of direct regulatory genes from indirect regulatory genes. Finally, direct regulatory genes were used in constructing GRNs, and the network structure was optimized according to the importance degree score. Experimental results on six public network datasets show that the proposed method can be effectively used to infer GRNs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) are a payment system that could effectively solve the problem of excessive increases in healthcare costs which are applied as a principal measure in the healthcare reform in China. However, expert-oriented DRG grouping is a black box with the drawbacks of upcoding and high cost. METHODS: This study proposes a method of data-based grouping, designed and updated by machine learning algorithms, which could be trained by real cases, or even simulated cases. It inherits the decision-making rules from the expert-oriented grouping and improves performance by incorporating continuous updates at low cost. Five typical classification algorithms were assessed and some suggestions were made for algorithm choice. The kappa coefficients were reported to evaluate the performance of grouping. RESULTS: Based on tenfold cross-validation, experiments showed that data-based grouping had a similar classification performance to the expert-oriented grouping when choosing suitable algorithms. The groupings trained by simulated cases had less accuracy when they were tested by the real cases rather than simulated cases, but the kappa coefficients of the best model were still higher than 0.6. When the grouping was tested in a new DRGs system, the average kappa coefficients were significantly improved from 0.1534 to 0.6435 by the update; and with enough computation resources, the update process could be completed in a very short time. CONCLUSIONS: As a new potential option, the data-based grouping meets the requirements of the DRGs system and has the advantages of high transparency and low cost in the design and update process.

RESUMO

Mining activities exert a far-reaching impact on the quality of groundwater, and health problems caused by heavy metal pollution have attracted global attention. In this study, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was employed to determine the contents of 8 heavy metals (Cd, Cr, As, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Pb) in shallow groundwater samples retrieved from a mining area in northern Anhui. Multivariate statistical methods were adopted to analyze the distribution and source of pollution and to evaluate 5% and 95% health risks based on Monte Carlo simulation. Fe, As and Cr significantly exceeded the safe drinking water standards of the World Health Organization (WHO). The average concentrations of As and Cr were as high as 46.45 µg/L and 133.96 µg/L, respectively. The correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) results revealed that heavy metals are affected by complex factors, the main factor being human activities. The total carcinogenic health risks of Cr and As in adults were 2.49 × 10-3 and 3.43 × 10-4, respectively, which exceeded the maximum acceptable risk value (1 ×10-4) recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), affecting human health. According to the USEPA classification of hazardous ingestion (HI), at HI < 1, the impact of non-carcinogenic heavy metals on human health is negligible. These results indicate that local residents should strengthen the monitoring of Cr and As pollution in shallow groundwater.

RESUMO

Males of the Oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) are highly attracted to, and compulsively feed, on methyl eugenol (ME). ME is converted into 2-allyl-4,5-dimethoxyphenol (DMP) and (E)-coniferyl alcohol (E-CF), which are temporarily sequestered in the fly's rectal gland prior to being released at dusk. Previous research initially confirmed that DMP is a relatively strong lure to B. dorsalis males. However, the characteristics of males' response to DMP and toxicology of DMP remains largely unclear. In our study, we demonstrated that DMP was more attractive to sexually mature males than E-CF tested in laboratory bioassays. Interestingly, the responsiveness of mature males to DMP was not uniform throughout the day, eliciting the highest response during the day and dropping to a low level at night. Furthermore, there were no significant differences between the olfactory responses of virgin and mated mature males to DMP. No obvious signs of toxic symptom and deaths were observed in mice during a 14-day acute oral toxicity testing. Further, toxicologically significant changes were not observed in body weight, water intake, food consumption, and absolute and relative organ weights between control and treated groups, implying DMP could be regarded as nontoxic. Lastly, the cytotoxicity data of DMP on cells showed that it exhibited no significant cytotoxicity to normal human and mouse cells. Taken together, results from both the acute and cellular toxicity experiments demonstrated the nontoxic nature of DMP. In conclusion, DMP shows promise as an effective and eco-friendly lure for B. dorsalis males, and may contribute to controlling B. dorsalis in the flied.

RESUMO

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal widely present in the environment. Estimating its internal levels for a given external exposure using toxicokinetic (TK) models is key to the human health risk assessment of Cd. In this study, existing Cd TK models were adapted to develop a one-compartment TK model and a multi-compartment physiologically based toxicokinetic (PBTK) model by estimating the characteristics of Cd kinetics based on Cd exposure data from 814 Chinese residents. Both models not only considered the effect of gender difference on Cd kinetics, but also described the model parameters in terms of distributions to reflect individual variability. For both models, the posterior distributions of sensitive parameters were estimated using the Markov chain-Monte Carlo method (MCMC) and the approximate Bayesian computation-MCMC algorithm (ABC-MCMC). Validation with the test dataset showed 1.4-22.5% improvement in the root mean square error (RMSE) over the original models. After a systematic literature search, the optimized models showed acceptable prediction on other Chinese datasets. The study provides a method for parameter optimization of TK models under different exposure environment, and the validated models can serve as new quantitative assessment tools for the risk assessment of Cd in the Chinese population.
