AIMS: Caused by multiple risk factors, heavy burden of major depressive disorder (MDD) poses serious challenges to public health worldwide over the past 30 years. Yet the burden and attributable risk factors of MDD were not systematically known. We aimed to reveal the long-term spatio-temporal trends in the burden and attributable risk factors of MDD at global, regional and national levels during 1990-2019. METHODS: We obtained MDD and attributable risk factors data from Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. We used joinpoint regression model to assess the temporal trend in MDD burden, and age-period-cohort model to measure the effects of age, period and birth cohort on MDD incidence rate. We utilized population attributable fractions (PAFs) to estimate the specific proportions of MDD burden attributed to given risk factors. RESULTS: During 1990-2019, the global number of MDD incident cases, prevalent cases and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) increased by 59.10%, 59.57% and 58.57%, respectively. Whereas the global age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR) and age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDR) of MDD decreased during 1990-2019. The ASIR, ASPR and ASDR in women were 1.62, 1.62 and 1.60 times as that in men in 2019, respectively. The highest age-specific incidence, prevalence and DALYs rate occurred at the age of 60-64 in women, and at the age of 75-84 in men, but the maximum increasing trends in these age-specific rates occurred at the age of 5-9. Population living during 2000-2004 had higher risk of MDD. MDD burden varied by socio-demographic index (SDI), regions and nations. In 2019, low-SDI region, Central sub-Saharan Africa and Uganda had the highest ASIR, ASPR and ASDR. The global PAFs of intimate partner violence (IPV), childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and bullying victimization (BV) were 8.43%, 5.46% and 4.86% in 2019, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Over the past 30 years, the global ASIR, ASPR and ASDR of MDD had decreased trends, while the burden of MDD was still serious, and multiple disparities in MDD burden remarkably existed. Women, elderly and populations living during 2000-2004 and in low-SDI regions, had more severe burden of MDD. Children were more susceptible to MDD. Up to 18.75% of global MDD burden would be eliminated through early preventing against IPV, CSA and BV. Tailored strategies-and-measures in different regions and demographic groups based on findings in this studywould be urgently needed to eliminate the impacts of modifiable risk factors on MDD, and then mitigate the burden of MDD.

Vacuolar-type (H+)-ATPase (vATPase) is a conserved multi-subunit eukaryotic enzyme composed of 14 subunits that form a functional complex consisting of an ATP-hydrolytic domain (V1) and a proton-translocation domain (V0). ATP hydrolysis and subsequent H+ translocation rely heavily on a fully assembled V1/V0 complex. Since vATPase is crucial for insect survival, it is a viable molecular target for pest control. However, detailed functional analyses of the 14 subunits and their suitability for pest control have not been fully explored in a single insect species. In this study, we identified 22 vATPase subunit transcripts that correspond to 13 subunits (A1, A2, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, a1, a2, c and d) in the white-backed planthopper (WBPH), Sogatella furcifera, a major hemipteran pest of rice. RNAi screens using microinjection and spray-based methods revealed that the SfVHA-F, SfVHA-a2 and SfVHA-c2 subunits are critical. Furthermore, star polymer (SPc) nanoparticles were utilized to conduct spray-induced and nanoparticle-delivered gene silencing (SI-NDGS) to evaluate the pest control efficacy of RNAi targeting the SfVHA-F, SfVHA-a2 and SfVHA-c2 transcripts. Target mRNA levels and vATPase enzymatic activity were both reduced. Honeydew excreta was likewise reduced in WBPH treated with dsRNAs targeting SfVHA-F, SfVHA-a2 and SfVHA-c2. To assess the environmental safety of the nanoparticle-wrapped dsRNAs, Cyrtorhinus lividipennis Reuter, a major natural enemy of planthoppers, was also sprayed with dsRNAs targeting SfVHA-F, SfVHA-a2 and SfVHA-c2. Post-spray effects of dsSfVHA-a2 and dsSfVHA-c2 on C. lividipennis were innocuous. This study identifies SfVHA-a2 and SfVHA-c2 as promising targets for biorational control of WBPH and lays the foundation for developing environment-friendly RNAi biopesticides.

With the proliferation of reverse osmosis technology, seawater reverse osmosis desalination has been heralded as the solution to water scarcity for coastal regions. However, the large volume of desalination brine produced may pose an adverse environmental impact when directly discharged into the sea and result in energy wastage as the seawater pumped out is dumped back into the sea. Recently, zero liquid discharge has been extensively studied as a way to eliminate the aquatic ecotoxicity impact completely, despite being expensive and having a high carbon footprint. In this work, we propose a new strategy towards the treatment of brine to seawater level for disposal, dubbed reclaimed seawater discharge (RSD). This process is coupled with existing resource recovery techniques and waste alkali CO2 capture processes to produce an economically viable waste treatment process with minimal CO2 emissions. In this work, we placed significant focus on the electrolysis of brine, which simultaneously lowers the salinity of the desalination brine (56.0 ± 2.1 g/L) to seawater level (32.0 ± 1.4 g/L), generates alkali brine from seawater (pH 13.6) to remove impurities in brine (Mg2+ and Ca2+ to below ppm level), and recovers magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, chlorine, bromine, and hydrogen gas as valuable resources. The RSD is further chemically dechlorinated and neutralised to pH 7.3 to be safe to discharge into the sea. The excess alkali brine is used to capture additional CO2 in the form of bicarbonates, achieving net abatement in climate change impact (9.90 CO2 e/m3) after product carbon abatements are accounted.

OBJECTIVE: Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is a multidimensional concept that is commonly used to examine the impact of oral health status on quality of life. The purpose of this study was to examine the optimal factor model of the Chinese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire in clinical populations, measurement invariance across clinical status and gender cohorts. This would ensure equal validity of the Chinese version of OHIP-14 in different populations and further support public oral investigations. METHODS: The Chinese version of OHIP-14 was used to investigate 490 dental patients and 919 college students. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), item analysis and reliability, measurement invariance, and the t-test were used for data analyses. RESULTS: We found that the 7-factor structure had the best-fit index in the sample (CFI = 0.970, TLI = 0.952; SRMR = 0.029, RMSEA = 0.052(0.040,0.063)). The reliability of the scales was satisfactory (Cronbach's α = 0.942). The error variance invariance fitted the data adequately in measurement invariance, indicating that measurement invariance is acceptable both across the clinical and non-clinical populations (∆CFI=-0.017, ∆RMSEA = 0.010) and across genders in the clinical population (∆CFI = 0.000, ∆RMSEA=-0.003). T-test for scores showed that the clinical populations scored significantly higher than the non-clinical populations, as did the overall score (t = 7.046, p < 0.001, d = 0.396), in terms of functional limitation (t = 2.178, p = 0.030, d = 0.125), physical pain (t = 7.880, p < 0.001,d = 0.436), psychological discomfort (t = 8.993, p < 0.001, d = 0.514), physical disability (t = 6.343, p < 0.001, d = 0.358), psychological disability (t = 5.592, p < 0.001, d = 0.315), social disability (t = 5.301, p < 0.001,d = 0.304), social handicap (t = 4.452, p < 0.001, d = 0.253), and that in the non-clinical populations, females scored significantly higher than males, as did in terms of physical pain (t = 3.055, p = 0.002, d = 0.280), psychological discomfort (t = 2.478, p = 0.014, d = 0.222), and psychological disability (t = 2.067, p = 0.039, d = 0.188). CONCLUSION: This study found that the Chinese version of OHIP-14 has measurement invariance between the clinical and non-clinical populations and across genders in the clinical populations, and can be widely used in OHRQoL assessment for public oral investigations.

Vascular aging represents a collection of structural and functional changes in a blood vessel with advancing age, including increased stiffness, vascular wall remodeling, loss of angiogenic ability, and endothelium-dependent vasodilation dysfunction. These age-related alterations may occur earlier in those who are at risk for or have cardiovascular diseases, therefore, are defined as early or premature vascular aging. Vascular aging contributes independently to cardio-cerebral vascular diseases (CCVDs). Thus, early diagnosis and interventions targeting vascular aging are of paramount importance in the delay or prevention of CCVDs. Here, we review the direct assessment of vascular aging by examining parameters that reflect changes in structure, function, or their compliance with age including arterial wall thickness and lumen diameter, endothelium-dependent vasodilation, arterial stiffness as well as indirect assessment through pathological studies of biomarkers including endothelial progenitor cell, lymphocytic telomeres, advanced glycation end-products, and C-reactive protein. Further, we evaluate how different types of interventions including lifestyle mediation, such as caloric restriction and salt intake, and treatments for hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia affect age-related vascular changes. As a single parameter or intervention targets only a certain vascular physiological change, it is recommended to use multiple parameters to evaluate and design intervention approaches accordingly to prevent systemic vascular aging in clinical practices or population-based studies.

Background: Renshen-Fuzi herb pair (RS-FZ) is often used in the clinical treatment of heart failure (HF) and has a remarkable therapeutic effect. However, the mechanism of RS-FZ for treating HF remains unclear. In our study, we explored the mechanism of RS-FZ for treating HF. Methods: Evaluation of RS-FZ efficacy by cardiovascular pharmacology. Moreover, Global metabolomics profiling of the serum was detected by UPLC-QTOF/MS. Multivariate statistics analyzed the specific serum metabolites and corresponding metabolic pathways. Combining serum metabolomics with network pharmacology, animal experiments screened and validated the critical targets of RS-FZ intervention in HF. Results: RS-FZ significantly ameliorated myocardial fibrosis, enhanced cardiac function, and reduced the serum HF marker (brain natriuretic peptide) level in rats with HF. Through topological analysis of the "Metabolite-Target-Component" interaction network, we found that 79 compounds of RS-FZ directly regulated the downstream specific serum metabolites by acting on four critical target proteins (CYP2D6, EPHX2, MAOB, and ENPP2). The immunohistochemistry results showed that RS-FZ observably improved the expression of CYP2D6 and ENPP2 proteins while decreasing the expression of EPHX2 and MAOB proteins dramatically. Conclusion: The integrated cardiovascular pharmacological assessment with serum metabolomics revealed that RS-FZ plays a crucial role in the treatment of HF by intervening in CYP2D6, EPHX2, MAOB, and ENPP2 target proteins. It provides a theoretical basis for RS-FZ for treating HF.

Background: Radioiodine (RAI) therapy plays a vital role in the postoperative treatment of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients underwent total thyroidectomy (TT). However, even in the presence of capsular invasion and lymph node metastasis prognosis can be excellent and a postoperative RAI treatment might not be necessary for all patients. Therefore, this study explored the criteria for avoiding unnecessary RAI therapy in these patients. Method: We applied response to therapy assessment immediately after surgery and prospectively recruited 179 excellent or indeterminate response DTC patients with capsular invasion and/or LNM who underwent TT without RAI therapy. During the follow-up, thyroglobulin (Tg), thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) levels, and cervical ultrasonography were collected and analyzed. Disease-free survival (DFS) was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. In addition, response to therapy assessments was performed on patients during each follow-up. Results: The mean follow-up period was 29.85 ± 17.44 months, and the 3- and 5-year DFS for all the patients was 99.3% in each. At the last follow-up, 165 (92.2%) patients had excellent responses, while 12 (6.7%) had an indeterminate response, and one (0.6%) each had biochemical and incomplete responses. No significant difference was observed in response to therapy between the subgroups of LNM and tumor invasion (P>0.05). For patients with capsular invasion and a number of metastatic lymph nodes ≤5 and >5, the proportions of recorded excellent responses were 95.9%, 91.0%, and 85.7%, respectively. Better responses were observed in females (excellent response: 95.5%, P=0.023), patients with stimulated Tg (s-Tg) ≤1ng/ml (excellent response: 100%, P<0.001), s-Tg ≤ 2ng/ml (excellent response: 98.4%, P<0.001), and excellent response for the immediate postoperative assessment (excellent response: 98.5%, P=0.004). Conclusions: The current study suggested that the response to therapy assessment immediately applied postoperatively could help avoid unnecessary RAI therapy among DTC patients with capsular invasion and/or LNM. Moreover, excellent response patients and patients with indeterminate response and s-Tg ≤ 2ng/ml could be managed without RAI therapy.

China's desert steppe is the transition zone between the grasslands in central China and the arid desert. Ecological security in this region has long been a subject of debate, both in the local and academic communities. Heavy metals and other pollutants are readily released during industrial production, combustion, and transportation, aggravating the vulnerability of the desert steppes. To understand the impact of industrial activiteis on the heavy metal content of dust fall in the desert steppe, a total of 37 dust fall samples were collected over 90 days. An inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer (NexION 350X) was used to measure the concentration of heavy metals Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb, Mn, Co, and Zn in the dust. Using comprehensive pollution index and multivariate statistical analysis methods, we explored the characteristics and sources of heavy metal pollution. We also quantitatively assessed the carcinogenic risks of heavy metals resulting from dust reduction with the help of health risk assessment models. The heavy metals' comprehensive pollution index values in the study area's dust fall were ranked as follows: Zn > Cd > Pb > Mn > Cu > Co > Cr. Among these, Zn, Cd, and Pb were significant pollution factors in the study area, and were affected by industrial production and transportation. The high pollution index was concentrated in the north of the research industrial park and on both sides of a highway. The seven heavy metals' total non-carcinogenic risk index (HI) values were ranked as follows: Mn > Co > Pb > Zn > Cr > Cu > Cd (only the HI of Mn was greater than one). Excluding Mn, the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk index values of the other six heavy metals were within acceptable ranges. Previous studies have also shown that industrial transportation and production have had a significant impact on the heavy metal content of dust fall in the desert steppe.

Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) have been widely used for the assessment of drug proarrhythmic potential through multielectrode array (MEA). HiPSC-CM cultures beat spontaneously with a wide range of frequencies, however, which could affect drug-induced changes in repolarization. Pacing hiPSC-CMs at a physiological heart rate more closely resembles the state of in vivo ventricular myocytes and permits the standardization of test conditions to improve consistency. In this study, we systematically investigated the time window of stable ion currents in high-purity hiPSC-derived ventricular cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-vCMs) and confirmed that these cells could be used to correctly predict the proarrhythmic risk of Comprehensive In Vitro Proarrhythmia Assay (CiPA) reference compounds. To evaluate drug proarrhythmic potentials at a physiological beating rate, we used a MEA to electrically pace hiPSC-vCMs, and we recorded regular field potential waveforms in hiPSC-vCMs treated with DMSO and 10 CiPA reference drugs. Prolongation of field potential duration was detected in cells after exposure to high- and intermediate-risk drugs; in addition, drug-induced arrhythmia-like events were observed. The results of this study provide a simple and feasible method to investigate drug proarrhythmic potentials in hiPSC-CMs at a physiological beating rate.

BACKGROUND: For its better differentiated hepatocyte phenotype, C3A cell line has been utilized in bioartificial liver system. However, up to now, there are only a few of studies working at the metabolic alternations of C3A cells under the culture conditions with liver failure plasma, which mainly focus on carbohydrate metabolism, total protein synthesis and ureagenesis. In this study, we investigated the effects of acute liver failure plasma on the growth and biological functions of C3A cells, especially on CYP450 enzymes. METHODS: C3A cells were treated with fresh DMEM medium containing 10% FBS, fresh DMEM medium containing 10% normal plasma and acute liver failure plasma, respectively. After incubation, the C3A cells were assessed for cell viabilities, lactate dehydrogenase leakage, gene transcription, protein levels, albumin secretion, ammonia metabolism and CYP450 enzyme activities. RESULTS: Cell viabilities decreased 15%, and lactate dehydrogenase leakage had 1.3-fold elevation in acute liver failure plasma group. Gene transcription exhibited up-regulation, down-regulation or stability for different hepatic genes. In contrast, protein expression levels for several CYP450 enzymes kept constant, while the CYP450 enzyme activities decreased or remained stable. Albumin secretion reduced about 48%, and ammonia accumulation increased approximately 41%. CONCLUSIONS: C3A cells cultured with acute liver failure plasma showed mild inhibition of cell viabilities, reduction of albumin secretion, and increase of ammonia accumulation. Furthermore, CYP450 enzymes demonstrated various alterations on gene transcription, protein expression and enzyme activities.

The entrance of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to healthcare industry has impacted the explosion of eHealth big data. Cloud computing is widely considered to be the promising solution to store this data because of the presence of abundant resources at a lower cost. However, the privacy and security of the IoT generated data cannot be ensured as the data is kept far from the owner's phys- ical domain. In order to resolve the underlined issues, a reassuring solution is to adopt attribute-based signcryption (ABSC) due to the desirable cryptographic properties it holds including fine-grained ac- cess control, authentication, confidentiality and data owner privacy. Nonetheless, executing expensive computation such as pairing and modular exponential operations in resource-constrained IoT device platform can be too taxing and demanding. To address the challenges stated above, we proposed in this paper, a more efficient scheme where computation power is borrowed from the cloud server to process expensive computations while leaving simple operations to local users. In order to realize this, trusted attribute authority, signcryptor and designcryptor outsources to the cloud expensive tasks for key gener- ation, signcryption and designcryption respectively. Moreover, validity and correctness of outsourced computations can be verified by employing outsourcing verification server. Security analysis, compar- isons evaluation and simulation of the proposed scheme is presented. The output demonstrates that it is efficient, secure and therefore suitable for application in resource-constrained IoT devices.

OBJECTIVE: To explore Chinese adults' perceptions and attitudes toward breastfeeding in public places. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a web-based survey including 10 items on breastfeeding participants (N = 2,021) who were recruited by convenience sampling. RESULTS: Almost 95% believed that public places should have lactation rooms, 86% thought it was acceptable for mothers to breastfeed in this location, and 65% of respondents agreed that it was acceptable for mothers to breastfeed in public. Though 47% believed that viewing women breastfeeding in public was embarrassing, more than 80% felt that breastfeeding in public was appropriate and decent and did not violate social morality. More than 90% of respondents approved of policies supporting breastfeeding in public. Women, married people, those who had children, had some knowledge about breastfeeding, or had the experience of viewing women breastfeeding in public were more likely to hold positive perceptions and attitudes toward breastfeeding in public places. CONCLUSIONS: Prior experience and knowledge about breastfeeding have a great influence on people's perceptions and attitudes toward breastfeeding in public, so education about breastfeeding is very important. Breastfeeding education should not only include the techniques of breastfeeding practices but also include information policies that support breastfeeding in public, including the importance of lactation rooms.

RESUMO

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is characterized by excessive fat accumulation in the liver of patients who consume little or no alcohol, becomes increasingly common with rapid economic development. Long-term excess fat accumulation leads to NAFLD and represents a global health problem with no effective therapeutic approach. NAFLD is considered to be a series of complex, multifaceted pathological processes involving oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and metabolism. Over the past decades, herbal medicines have garnered growing attention as potential therapeutic agents to prevent and treat NAFLD, due to their high efficacy and low risk of side effects. In this review, we evaluate the use of herbal medicines (including traditional Chinese herbal formulas, crude extracts from medicinal plants, and pure natural products) to treat NAFLD. These herbal medicines are natural resources that can inform innovative drug research and the development of treatments for NAFLD in the future.

AIM: To evaluate the utility of liver reserve function by acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) imaging in patients with liver tumors. METHODS: Seventy-six patients with liver tumors were enrolled in this study. Serum biochemical indexes, such as aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), serum albumin (ALB), total bilirubin (T-Bil), and other indicators were observed. Liver stiffness (LS) was measured by ARFI imaging, measurements were repeated 10 times, and the average value of the results was taken as the final LS value. Indocyanine green (ICG) retention was performed, and ICG-K and ICG-R15 were recorded. Child-Pugh (CP) scores were carried out based on patient's preoperative biochemical tests and physical condition. Correlations among CP scores, ICG-R15, ICG-K and LS values were observed and analyzed using either the Pearson correlation coefficient or the Spearman rank correlation coefficient. Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare LS values of CP scores, and the receiver-operator characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze liver reserve function assessment accuracy. RESULTS: LS in the ICG-R15 10%-20% group was significantly higher than in the ICG-R15 < 10% group; and the difference was statistically significant (2.19 ± 0.27 vs 1.59 ± 0.32, P < 0.01). LS in the ICG-R15 > 20% group was significantly higher than in the ICG-R15 < 10% group; and the difference was statistically significant (2.92 ± 0.29 vs 1.59 ± 0.32, P < 0.01). The LS value in patients with CP class A was lower than in patients with CP class B (1.57 ± 0.34 vs 1.86 ± 0.27, P < 0.05), while the LS value in patients with CP class B was lower than in patients with CP class C (1.86 ± 0.27 vs 2.47 ± 0.33, P < 0.01). LS was positively correlated with ICG-R15 (r = 0.617, P < 0.01) and CP score (r = 0.772, P < 0.01). Meanwhile, LS was negatively correlated with ICG-K (r = -0.673, P < 0.01). AST, ALT and T-Bil were positively correlated with LS, while ALB was negatively correlated with LS (P < 0.05). The ROC curve revealed that the when the LS value was 2.34 m/s, the Youden index was at its highest point, sensitivity was 69.2% and specificity was 92.1%. CONCLUSION: For patients with liver tumors, ARFI imaging is a useful tool for assessing liver reserve function.

Environment problems in rural areas have been increasing dramatically in recent years. Atmospheric particulate mercury has posed increasingly obvious threats to human health. However, there were few studies attaching importance on mercury pollution in rural residential environment. Taking particulate mercury as research objects, the studies in six villages of Hebei Province were carried out in July/August 2009 and October/September 2010. A number of PM10 and PM2.5 samples were taken in 34 typical households, using cold vapor atomic fluorescence to determine the content of particulate mercury. The results showed that the mercury concentration in PM10 in kitchen was about twice that in the courtyard. In the same space, the mercury contents in PM10 in a descending order were as follows: winter (3.004 ng x m(-3)), autumn (1.550 ng x m(-3)), summer (1.127 ng x m(-3)); in the same season, the mercury levels in PM2.5 in a descending order were as follows: kitchen (0.795 ng x m(-3) +/- 0.337 ng x m(-3)), living room (0.398 ngx m(-3) +/- 0.159 ng x m(-3)), yard (0.321 ng x m(-3) +/- 0.143 ng x m(-3)); the Mercury content in PM2.5 accounted for (52.4 +/- 13.5)% of that in PM10. Evaluation of the health risks of mercury in PM2.5 revealed that children were exposed to the highest level, whose average annual excess risk was below 10(-8). Therefore, the health risk of peasants living in rural residential environment was at a negligible level.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect and cost-benefit of Oncomelania snail control by plowing and planting in Jiaobei Beach of Zhenjiang City. METHODS: In 2009, the measures of building low dike and plowing and planting were implemented in the experimental area of the east part of Jiaobei Beach, while in the control area of the west part of the beach, the molluscacide (niclosamide) was used to control snails. Then, the snail control effects and the cost-benefits of the two groups were compared. RESULTS: In the experimental area, the density of living snails decreased by 99.75% in the year when the measures were implemented, and no living snails were found from the second year. Though that the density of living snails in the control area decreased by 70% around, it aroused again in the second year. The net cost-benefit ratios of the experimental area and the control area were 2.18 and -0.92, respectively. CONCLUSION: Building low dike and plowing and planting in the beaches along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River can effectively control snails, meanwhile, it is economic.

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is a major public health issue, particularly in developing countries, and thus effective diagnostic methods for TB remain a central theme in basic and clinical research. To evaluate five antigens (38-kDa protein [38kDa], Rv3621c, Rv3618, 38kDa-ESAT-6 [38E6], and Ag85B-HBHA [AH]) in serological tests for TB patients, we recruited 288 patients and 201 healthy controls. The median IgG reactivity to 38kDa, 38E6, and AH was higher than that to Rv3618 and Rv3621c in pulmonary TB. 38kDa and 38E6 provided high sensitivities in pulmonary TB but low sensitivities in extrapulmonary TB (EPTB). The specificities achieved by 38kDa and 38E6 ranged from 82.0% to 93.9% in patients with non-TB respiratory disease (PD) and in controls. 38kDa and 38E6 exhibited lower sensitivities and higher specificities than their combinations with Rv3618. These findings provide useful information on the relative importance of the above five antigens and suggest that combinations of Rv3618 with 38kDa and 38E6 can increase their sensitivities, but their specificities need to be further increased.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of cesarean section birth based on different indications on attentiveness in school children. METHODS: A total of 308 school children were assigned to three groups according to their birth model: natural delivery (n = 105), cesarean section due to social factors (n = 101) or medical factors (n = 102). The integrated visual and auditory continuous performance test (IVA-CPT) was performed for assessing attentiveness. RESULTS: The IVA-CPT demonstrated that there were significant differences in the quotients of combination control, auditory response control, combination attention, auditory attention, visual attention, auditory vigilance, visual concordance, visual vigilance and visual attention among the three groups (p<0.05). The results of the IVA-CPT in the group of cesarean section due to medical factors was obviously poorer than that of the natural delivery group and the group of cesarean section due to social factors. However no significant differences were observed between the groups of natural delivery and of cesarean section due to social factors. CONCLUSIONS: Cesarean section itself has no significant impacts on attentiveness in school children, while medical indications for cesarean section may contribute to major cause of attention deficit disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical diagnostic value of 18F-FDG imaging by coincidence circuit SPECT with low-dose CT in differential diagnosis of pulmonary lesions and mediastinal lymph node involvement, which can not be definitely diagnosed based on regular CT image in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: By using GE-Millennium VG with Hawkeye, 18F-FDG imaging was carried out in 48 patients with suspected lung cancer. Clinical value of 18F-FDG imaging for diagnosing malignancy was evaluated through comparison with the final pathological results. Mediastinal lymph node involvement was also assessed through lesion-by-lesion comparison with pathologic results in 74 lymph node regions from 24 patients. RESULTS: Final pathologic diagnoses of these patients were 36 malignancies consisting of 20 adenocarcinomas, 12 squamous cell carcinomas, 3 small cell carcinomas and I large cell carcinoma; 12 benign tumors including 6 pneumonias, 2 tuberculosis, 2 hamatomas, 1 cyst and 1 neurofibroma. Of 48 patients, uptake of 18F-FDG in the chest was found to be abnormal in 40. Correct diagnosis were made in 34 malignancies and 6 false positive lesions were excluded based on morphology and 18F-FDG uptake status of the lesion. There were 6 false positive and 2 false negative cases. Furthermore, extrathoracic metastases which were not showed on previous CT image in 4 patients including one in the adrenal gland and 3 in the bone were detected by 18F-FDG imaging. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the 18F-FDG imaging for differentiating malignant tumor from benign was 94.4%, 50.0% and 83.3%, respectively. Squamous cell carcinoma was found to uptake more FDG than adenocarcinoma. For determination of mediastinal lymph node involvement, the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of 18F-FDG imaging was 57.9% , 90.9% and 82.4%, respectively through lesion-by-lesion comparison; whereas, which was 61.5%, 81.8% and 70.8%, respectively, based on case-by-case comparison. CONCLUSION: 18F-FDG imaging by coincidence circuit SPECT with low-dose CT is quite helpful in differential diagnosis for patient with undetermined lesion on regular CT image, but it is limited for staging of lung cancer in the patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

RESUMO

Ammonium removal by modified zeolite, H-form and Na-form zeolite, were examined by batch-type methods. The adsorption of ammonium on modified zeolite was exothermic process. The saturation adsorption capacity of ammonium on H-form and Na-form zeolite were 21.23 and 41.15 mg/g, respectively. After ten times adsorption-desorption-readsorption cycles the standard deviations of H-form and Na-form zeolite were 6.34% and 6.59%. The zeolite adsorption process has proved cost effective and practical in reducing ammonium by H-form and Na-form zeolite in municipal wastewater from concentration 27.68 mg/L to 2.80 mg/L and 5.91 mg/L.
