Emerging technological innovations offer the potential for experiential engagement through virtual scenarios, yet the viability of this approach for educational purposes remains significantly underexplored. This study aims to assess the feasibility of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies in providing users with aesthetic experiences when visiting digital exhibitions. A total of 190 students participated in this investigation. The control group visited traditional exhibits at the Palace Museum in Beijing. This group underwent a survey to evaluate their acquired aesthetic experience. In contrast, the experimental group, comprising 96 students, engaged with VR/AR scenarios at the Palace Museum in Beijing. Accordingly, students in the experimental group were also surveyed to evaluate both their aesthetic experiences and, additionally, their user experiences. The survey results unveiled significant distinctions in aesthetic experiences between students in the control and experimental groups. Moreover, there were notable correlations between individual variables related to user and aesthetic experiences within the experimental group. Furthermore, the study revealed disparities in both user and aesthetic experiences among male and female students. The findings have implications for aesthetic education teachers and officials in the context of developing sound strategies for providing aesthetic experiences to their students. This information is also of interest to employees of museums, exhibitions, and other cultural facilities, who are interested in holding or hold digital exhibitions.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate Chinese long-term economic impact of universal human leukocyte antigen B (HLA-B)*58:01 genotyping-guided urate-lowering therapy or febuxostat initiation therapy for gout patients with mild to moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD) from perspective of healthcare system. METHODS: A Markov model embedded in a decision tree was structured including four mutually exclusive health states (uncontrolled-on-therapy, controlled-on-therapy, uncontrolled-off-therapy, and death). Mainly based on Chinese real-world data, the incremental costs per quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) gained were evaluated from three groups (universal HLA-B*58:01 testing strategy, and no genotyping prior to allopurinol or febuxostat initiation therapy) at 25-year time horizon. All costs were adjusted to 2021 levels based on Chinese Consumer Price Index and were discounted by 5% annually. One-way and probability sensitivity analysis were performed. RESULTS: Among these three groups, universal HLA-B*58:01 genotyping was the most cost-effective strategy in base-case analysis according to Chinese average willingness-to-pay threshold of $37 654.50 per QALY. The based incremental cost-effectiveness ratio was $31784.55 per QALY, associated with 0.046 additional QALYs and $1463.81 increment costs per patient at a 25-year time horizon compared with no genotyping prior to allopurinol initiation strategy. Sensitivity analysis showed 64.3% robustness of these results. CONCLUSION: From Chinese perspective of healthcare system, HLA-B*58:01 genotyping strategy was cost-effective for gout patients with mild to moderate CKD in mainland China, especially in the most developed area, such as Beijing and Shanghai. Therefore, we suggest China's health authorities choose the genotyping strategy and make different recommendations according to the differences of local conditions.

BACKGROUND: Optimal setting of mechanical ventilators is critical for improving outcomes. Accurate, predictive lung mechanics models are effective in optimizing MV settings, but only at a global level as they cannot estimate regional lung volume ventilation to assess the potential of local distension or under-ventilation. This study presents a low-cost structured light system for non-contact high resolution chest motion measurement to estimate regional lung volume changes. METHODS: The system consists of a structured light projector and two cameras. A new pattern is designed to extract motion from sub-regions of the chest surface, and an efficient feature is proposed to provide a fast and accurate correspondence matching between two views. Reconstruction of 3D surface points is based on the matched points and stereo method. Asymmetric distribution of tidal volume into left and right lungs is estimated based on reconstructed regional chest expansion. A proof-of-concept experiment using a dummy model and two test lungs connected to a ventilator to provide differential chest expansion is conducted under tidal volumes of 400 ml, 500 ml and 600 ml, with results compared to the widely-used SURF and ORB methods. RESULTS: Compared to the SURF and ORB methods, the proposed method is more computationally efficient with ∼40% less computational time cost, and higher accuracy for dense point correspondence. Finally, the proposed method estimated the region lung volumes with the maximum error of 8 ml under 600 ml tidal volume, indicating a good accuracy. CONCLUSIONS: Surface reconstruction results in a proof-of-concept experiment with differential chest expansion show good performance for the proposed pattern and method in extracting the key information for regional chest expansion. The proposed method is generalizable, with potential for use in other applications.

Glucoamylase is an important industrial enzyme. Glucoamylase production by industrial Aspergillus niger strain featured with two major problems: (i) empirical substrate feeding methods deteriorating the fermentation performance; and (ii) the high raw materials cost limiting the economics of the glucoamylase product with delegated specification. In this study, we first proposed a novel three-stage varied-rate substrate feeding strategy for efficient glucoamylase production in a 5 L bioreactor using the standard feeding medium, by comparing the changing patterns of the important physiological parameters such as DO, OUR, RQ, etc., when using different substrate feeding strategies. With this strategy, the glucoamylase activity and productivity reached higher levels of 11,000 U/ml and 84.6 U/ml/h, respectively. The performance enhancement in this case was beneficial from the following results: DO and OUR could be controlled at the higher levels (30%, 43.83 mmol/l/h), while RQ was maintained at a stable/lower level of 0.60 simultaneously throughout the fed-batch phase. Based on this three-stage varied-rate substrate feeding strategy, we further evaluated the economics of using alternative carbon sources, attempting to reduce the raw materials cost. The results revealed that cornstarch hydrolysate could be considered as the best carbon source to replace the standard and expensive feeding medium. In this case, the production cost of the glucoamylase with delegated specification (5,000 U/ml) could be saved by more than 61% while the product quality be ensured simultaneously. The proposed strategy showed application potential in improving the economics of industrial glucoamylase production.
