Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency pose global public health challenges, yet research on serum vitamin D levels in the 0-17-year-old age group in southeastern China remains limited. This study aimed to fill this gap by investigating serum 25(OH)D levels in children in the region aged 0-17 years, contributing crucial data for understanding vitamin D nutritional status. Liquid chromatographyâmass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LCâMS/MS) technology was used. Vitamin D testing was integrated into routine diagnostic procedures for 11,116 children in Wujiang District, Suzhou City. Among the 0-17-year age group, comprising 6348 boys and 4768 girls, the prevalence of serum 25(OH)D deficiency and insufficiency was 21.4% and 31.0%, respectively. The median serum 25(OH)D concentration was 29.72 ng/mL (21.84-39.84 ng/mL) in boys compared to 28.48 ng/mL (20.65-39.23 ng/mL) in girls. Seasonal variations were observed, with median serum 25(OH)D concentrations of 29.02 ng/mL (20.73-39.72 ng/mL) in spring, 28.79 ng/mL (21.53-39.37 ng/mL) in summer, 30.12 ng/mL (22.00-39.70 ng/mL) in autumn, and 28.58 ng/mL (19.97-39.46 ng/mL) in winter. Statistically significant differences were noted in the serum 25(OH)D levels during autumn and winter. In conclusion, the rate of adequate vitamin D levels in local children was 47.5%, revealing a relatively high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (21.4%) and insufficiency (31.0%), especially during the post-preschool period. Advocating for vitamin D supplementation in children is crucial for ensuring adequate vitamin D support.

PURPOSE: The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic increasingly threatens the public health security worldwide. We aimed to identify high-risk areas of COVID-19 and understand how socioeconomic factors are associated with the spatial distribution of COVID-19 in China, which may help other countries control the epidemic. METHODS: We analyzed the data of COVID-19 cases from 30 provinces in mainland China (outside of Hubei) from 16 January 2020 to 31 March 2020, considering the data of demographic, economic, health, and transportation factors. Global autocorrelation analysis and Bayesian spatial models were used to present the spatial pattern of COVID-19 and explore the relationship between COVID-19 risk and various factors. RESULTS: Global Moran's I statistics of COVID-19 incidences was 0.31 (P<0.05). The areas with a high risk of COVID-19 were mainly located in the provinces around Hubei and the provinces with a high level of economic development. The relative risk of two socioeconomic factors, the per capita consumption expenditure of households and the proportion of the migrating population from Hubei, were 1.887 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.469~2.399] and 1.099 (95% CI: 1.053~1.148), respectively. The two factors explained up to 78.2% out of 99.7% of structured spatial variations. CONCLUSION: Our results suggested that COVID-19 risk was positively associated with the level of economic development and population movements. Blocking population movement and reducing local exposures are effective in preventing the local transmission of COVID-19.

Widespread vaccination of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine makes the assessment of antibodies' positive rates essential. In this study, a total of 378 hospital staff members vaccinated with the vaccine were selected as research subjects. Serum-specific IgG and IgM against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (S) were detected, and S-specific IgG and IgM positive rates were analyzed in different age and sex groups, as was the serological pattern of IgG/IgM. The positive rates of IgG and IgM were 92.06% and 44.44%, respectively. The percentage of both IgG and IgM positive (IgG+IgM+) was 43.92%. A total of 182 vaccinees (46.90%) were IgG positive and IgM negative (IgG+IgM-), and 28 vaccinees (7.41%) were negative for both IgG and IgM (IgG-IgM-); 2 participants were positive for IgM alone (IgG-IgM+). In sex subgroups, the rate of IgM positivity was significantly higher in the male group than in the female group (p = 0.027). In different age subgroups, positive rates for IgG in the young group were significantly higher than those in the other group (p = 0.035). Furthermore, ratios of sample values to cutoff values (S/CO values) for IgG in vaccinees who were S-specific IgG positive were compared, and the S/CO values of IgG were significantly higher in the younger group than in the other group (p < 0.001). When comparing the influence of sex on two specific serological patterns (IgG+IgM- and IgG+IgM+), a significant difference in positivity rates was detected (p = 0.011). Male vaccinees were more likely than females to have an IgG+IgM+ pattern.

Introduction: As of June 7, 2021, the outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread to more than 200 countries. The global number of reported cases is more than 172.9 million, with more than 3.7 million deaths, and the number of infected individuals is still growing rapidly. Consequently, events and activities around the world were canceled or postponed, and the preparation for sporting events were greatly challenged. Under such circumstances, about 11,000 athletes from ~206 countries are arriving in Tokyo for the 32nd Summer Olympic Games. Therefore, it is urgently necessary to assess the occurrence and spread risk of COVID-19 for the Games. Objectives: To explore effective prevention and control measures for COVID-19 in large international events through simulations of different interventions according to risk assessment. Methods: We used a random model to calculate the number of initial infected patients and used Poisson distribution to determine the number of initial infected patients based on the number of countries involved. Furthermore, to simulate the COVID-19 transmission, the susceptible-exposed-symptomatic-asymptomatic-recovered-hospitalized (SEIARH) model was established based on the susceptible-exposed-infectious-recovered (SEIR) mathematical model of epidemic diseases. According to risk assessment indicators produced by different scenarios of the simulated interventions, the risk of COVID-19 transmission in Tokyo Olympic Games was assessed. Results: The current COVID-19 prevention measures proposed by the Japan Olympic Committee need to be enhanced. And large-scale vaccination will effectively control the spread of COVID-19. When the protective efficacy of vaccines is 78.1% or 89.8%, and if the vaccination rate of athletes reaches 80%, an epidemic prevention barrier can be established.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area in healthy volunteers using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and identify factors that influence the FAZ. METHODS: This single-center cross-sectional study included 526 eyes of 263 healthy volunteers who underwent macular scanning by Zeiss OCTA. A linear mixed model was used to investigate the effects of systemic factors (age, sex, blood pressure, height, and weight) and ocular factors (intraocular pressure, biometric parameters, and central macular thickness) on FAZ. RESULTS: In total, 520 eyes of 262 healthy volunteers were included in the analysis. The mean volunteer age was 38.59 ± 22.03 years (range, 5-84 years); 124 volunteers were male (47.33%) and 138 volunteers were female (52.67%). The mean FAZ area was 0.30 ± 0.03 mm2 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.29-0.31 mm2). Univariate analysis showed that FAZ area was associated with age (ß = 0.0011), anterior chamber depth (ß = -0.0513), and axial length (ß = -0.0202). Multivariate analysis showed that FAZ area was negatively correlated with axial length (ß = -0.0181). CONCLUSIONS: The mean FAZ area in healthy volunteers, measured using Zeiss OCTA, was 0.30 ± 0.03 mm2. Furthermore, FAZ area was negatively associated with axial length; this relationship should be considered in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: It is critical to monitor the optic disc's vessel density using Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and evaluate its determinants. In the current study, we investigate the superficial vessel density (VD) of the papillary microvasculature and its determinants in healthy subjects of Southern China. METHODS: This was a prospective, cross-sectional study. Superficial VD in healthy individuals' optic disc region was measured by OCTA. The factors associated with ocular and systemic parameters were analyzed using a generalized estimation equation (GEE) model. RESULTS: A total of 510 eyes of 260 healthy subjects were analyzed in the study. The total VD in the optic disc area was 17.21 ± 2.15 mm- 1 (95% CI, 17.02-17.40 mm- 1). The VD in the inner ring and the outer ring of the optic disc were significantly higher compared with the central ring, while the VD of the superior quadrant and inferior quadrant was significantly higher compared with the temporal and nasal quadrant. After adjusting for the ocular factors and systemic factors, AL (ß = - 0.4917, P = 0.0003), disc area (ß = - 0.3748, P = 0.0143), CMT (ß = - 0.0183, P = 0.0003) and SSI (ß = 1.0588, P < 0.001) were significantly associated with total VD of the optic disc. CONCLUSION: The mean total VD in the optic disc area was 17.21 ± 2.15 mm- 1 in healthy subjects, and the superior and inferior VD was significantly higher than the temporal and nasal VD. AL, disc area, CMT, and SSI may affect the total VD in the optic disc area and should be considered in clinical practice.

Antibiotics have become a global public concern because of their extensively usage and high toxicity on aquatic organisms, especially leading to the widespread of antibiotic resistance genes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence, spatial distribution and ecological risks of multi-classes commonly used human and veterinary antibiotics in both aqueous and sedimentary phases of 65 shallow lakes in the lower-middle reaches of the Yangtze River, China. In the target area, antibiotic concentrations in most of lakes (<20â¯ng/L in the water of 22 lakes and <20â¯ng/g in the sediments of 43 lakes) were generally lower than those documented in previous studies in China and other countries, and these differences were probably due to less pollutant sources, high temperatures and heavy rainfall in summer. The concentrations of antibiotics in water (>100â¯ng/L) or sediments (>100â¯ng/g) of nine lakes, such as Dianshan Lake, Ge Lake and Ce Lake, were comparable to those in rivers and lakes that were seriously polluted by urban and livestock wastewater in China. The Taihu lakes showed relatively higher antibiotic concentrations, followed by the Huaihe River lakes, Poyang lakes and Dongting lakes. The composition of antibiotics showed that agricultural source might be the main source of antibiotics in most of the lakes in the lower-middle reaches of the Yangtze River basin, China. The pseudo distribution coefficient (P-Kd) and significant relationship between antibiotics and environmental factors in the present study suggested the spatial of antibiotics in the lakes might be affected by antibiotics' physiochemical properties and environmental factors. The environmental risk assessment results showed that in general, sulfamethoxazole (SMX), erythromycin (ETM) and ofloxacin (OFX) in the surface water could pose medium risks to algae or bacteria in the aquatic ecosystem, while antibiotics ETM, roxithromycin (RTM), enrofloxacin (EFX) and sulfadiazine (SDZ) in the sediment might pose medium risks to algae or bacteria populations. High potential risk might occur in winter in most lakes due to lower water storage and less degradation. Overall, our study reveals the pollution trends and potential sources of antibiotics in shallow lakes in the lower-middle reaches of the Yangtze River basin.

The occurrence of antibiotics in the environment has raised much concern in recent years. Understanding their release, fate and behaviour in the environment is vital to assess potential risks. In this study, a novel passive water sampler - diffusion gradients in thin-films for organics (o-DGT) - was employed to assess the occurrence and removal of antibiotics in two waste water treatment plants (WWTPs) - one in China and the other in the United Kingdom (UK). Of the targeted compounds, 11 of 19 were detected in the Chinese WWTP (ND-200ng/L) and 10 of 40 were found in the UK plant (ND-1380ng/L). Florfenicol, lincomycin, ofloxacin and roxithromycin were most abundant in the Chinese WWTP (influent), while anhydrous erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, trimethoprim, ofloxacin and sulfapyridine were the most abundant in the UK influent samples. Estimated Chinese and UK consumption data are used to interpret the results. Neither of the WWTPs was very effective at removing antibiotics: ~40-50% (overall) was removed by the two plants, with the rest being discharged into the receiving rivers. This is the first study using o-DGT to assess the occurrence and removal of antibiotics in WWTPs. o-DGT is a useful, cost-effective tool to assess WWTP performance and can highlight the effectiveness of treatment steps, which can be applied to wastewater based epidemiology studies.

Pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment have received great attentions from the general and scientific community due to their potential impacts on ecological and human health. We investigated the occurrence of twelve acidic pharmaceuticals and herbicides (salicylic acid, clofibric acid, ibuprofen, gemfibrozil, fenoprofen, naproxen, ketoprofen, mefenamic acid, tolfenamic acid, diclofenac, meclofenamic acid and indomethacin) in surface waters of the Yellow River, Hai River and Liao River in north China during the wet and dry seasons and assessed the potential risks to aquatic organisms posed by these acidic compounds. Seven acidic compounds were detected in the rivers, including five non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (salicylic acid, ibuprofen, diclofenac, mefenamic acid and naproxen), and two blood lipid regulators (clofibric acid and gemfibrozil). The concentrations for acidic pharmaceuticals in the Yellow River and Liao River were in most cases higher in the dry season than in the wet season, but the concentrations of acidic compounds in the Hai River were generally higher in July than in November. High concentrations of these detected compounds in the Yellow River, Hai River and Liao River were found more frequently at those sites located in metropolitan areas, lower reaches or river confluences. Only diclofenac and ibuprofen were found to have medium to high risks in the three rivers based on the calculated risk quotients.
