RESUMO

The abuse and uncontrolled discharge of antibiotics present a severe threat to environment and human health, necessitating the development of efficient and sustainable treatment technology. In this work, we employ a facile one-step electrodeposition method to prepare polyaniline/graphite oxide (PANI/GO) and samarium (Sm) co-modified Ti/PbO2 (Ti/PbO2-PANI/GO-Sm) electrode for the degradation of amoxicillin (AMX). Compared with traditional Ti/PbO2 electrode, Ti/PbO2-PANI/GO-Sm electrode exhibits more excellent oxygen evolution potential (2.63 V) and longer service life (56 h). In degradation experiment, under optimized conditions (50 mg L-1 AMX, 20 mA cm-2, pH 3, 0.050 M Na2SO4, 25 °C), Ti/PbO2-PANI/GO-Sm electrode achieves remarkable removal efficiencies of 88.76% for AMX and 79.92% for chemical oxygen demand at 90 min. In addition, trapping experiment confirms that ·OH plays a major role in the degradation process. Based on theoretical calculation and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer results, the heterocyclic portion of AMX molecule is more susceptible to ·OH attacks. Thus, this novel electrode offers a sustainable and efficient solution to address environmental challenges posed by antibiotic-contaminated wastewater.

RESUMO

Actinidia arguta, the most widely distributed Actinidia species and the second cultivated species in the genus, can be distinguished from the currently cultivated Actinidia chinensis on the basis of its small and smooth fruit, rapid softening, and excellent cold tolerance. Adaptive evolution of tetraploid Actinidia species and the genetic basis of their important agronomic traits are still unclear. Here, we generated a chromosome-scale genome assembly of an autotetraploid male A. arguta accession. The genome assembly was 2.77 Gb in length with a contig N50 of 9.97 Mb and was anchored onto 116 pseudo-chromosomes. Resequencing and clustering of 101 geographically representative accessions showed that they could be divided into two geographic groups, Southern and Northern, which first diverged 12.9 million years ago. A. arguta underwent two prominent expansions and one demographic bottleneck from the mid-Pleistocene climate transition to the late Pleistocene. Population genomics studies using paleoclimate data enabled us to discern the evolution of the species' adaptation to different historical environments. Three genes (AaCEL1, AaPME1, and AaDOF1) related to flesh softening were identified by multi-omics analysis, and their ability to accelerate flesh softening was verified through transient expression assays. A set of genes that characteristically regulate sexual dimorphism located on the sex chromosome (Chr3) or autosomal chromosomes showed biased expression during stamen or carpel development. This chromosome-level assembly of the autotetraploid A. arguta genome and the genes related to important agronomic traits will facilitate future functional genomics research and improvement of A. arguta.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Recent years revealed key molecules in lung cancer research, yet their exact roles in disease onset and progression remain uncertain. Lung cancer's heterogeneity complicates prognosis prediction. This study integrates pivotal molecules to evaluate patient prognosis and immunotherapy efficacy. METHODS: The WGCNA algorithm identified module genes linked to immunity. The Lasso-Cox method built a prognostic model for outcome prediction. GO and KEGG analyses explored gene pathways. ssGSEA quantified immune cell types and functions. The riskScore predicts the effectiveness of immunotherapy based on its correlation with DNA repair and immune checkpoint genes. Single-cell sequencing examined key gene expression across cell types. RESULTS: Using WGCNA, we identified the MEbrown module related to immunity. Lasso-Cox selected "BLK," "ITGB4," "PRKCH," and "SNAI1" for the prognostic model. MF analysis revealed enriched functions including antigen binding, GTPase regulator activity. In terms of BP, processes like immune signaling and mitotic division were enriched. CC enrichment included immunoglobulin complexes and chromosomal regions. Enriched pathways encompassed Cell cycle, Focal adhesion, Cellular senescence, and p53 signaling. ssGSEA evaluated immune cell abundance. RiskScore correlated with CTLA4 and PD1 through MMR and immune checkpoint analysis. Single-cell analysis indicated gene expression across cell types for BLK, ITGB4, PRKCH, and SNAI1. CONCLUSION: In summary, our developed prognostic model utilizing age-related genes effectively predicts lung cancer prognosis and the efficacy of immune therapy.

RESUMO

Benchmark dose (BMD) methodology has been employed as a default dose-response modeling approach to determine the toxicity value of chemicals to support regulatory chemical risk assessment. Especially, a relatively standardized BMD analysis framework has been established for modeling toxicological data regarding the formats of input data, dose-response models, definitions of benchmark response, and model uncertainty consideration. However, the BMD approach has not been well developed for epidemiological data mainly because of the diverse designs of epidemiological studies and various formats of data reported in the literature. Although most of the epidemiological BMD analyses were developed to solve a particular question, the methods proposed in two recent studies are able to handle cohort and case-control studies using summary data with consideration of adjustments for confounders. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to investigate and compare the "effective count"-based BMD modeling approach and adjusted relative risk (RR)-based BMD analysis approach to identify an appropriate BMD modeling framework that can be generalized for analyzing published data of prospective cohort studies for BMD analysis. The two methods were applied to the same set of studies that investigated the association between bladder and lung cancer and inorganic arsenic exposure for BMD estimation. The results suggest that estimated BMDs and BMDLs are relatively consistent; however, with the consideration of established common practice in BMD analysis, modeling adjusted RR values as continuous data for BMD estimation is a more generalizable approach harmonized with the BMD approach using toxicological data.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: PET has been demonstrated to be sensitive for detecting active inflammation in Takayasu's arteritis (TAK) patients, but semi-quantitative-based assessment may be susceptible to various biological and technical factors. Absolute quantification via dynamic PET (dPET) may provide a more reliable and quantitative assessment of TAK-active arteries. The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility and efficacy of dPET in quantifying TAK-active arteries compared to static PET. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 10 TAK-active patients (fulfilled the NIH criteria) and 5 control participants from March to October 2022. One-hour dPET scan (all TAK and control participants) and delayed static PET scan at 2-h (all TAK patients) were acquired. For 1-h static PET, summed images from 50 to 60 min of the dPET were extracted. PET parameters derived from 1- and 2-h static PET including SUV (SUV1H and SUV2H), target-to-background ratio (TBR) (TBR1H and TBR2H), net influx rate (Ki), and TBRKi extracted from dPET were obtained. The detectability of TAK-active arteries was compared among different scanning methods using the generalized estimating equation (GEE) with a logistic regression with repeated measures, and the GEE with gamma distribution and log link function was used to evaluate the different study groups or scanning methods. RESULTS: Based on the disease states, 5 cases of TAK were classified as untreated and relapsed, respectively. The SUVmax on 2-h PET was higher than that on 1-h PET in the untreated patients (P < 0.05). However, no significant differences were observed in the median SUVmax between 1-h PET and 2-h PET in the relapsed patients (P > 0.05). The TBRKi was significantly higher than both TBR1H and TBR2H (all P < 0.001). Moreover, the detectability of TAK-active arteries by dPET-derived Ki was significantly higher than 1-h and 2-h PET (all P < 0.001). Significant differences were observed in Kimax, SUVmax-1H, TBR1H, and TBRKi among untreated, relapsed, and control groups (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Absolute quantitative assessment by dPET provides an improved sensitivity and detectability in both visualization and quantification of TAK-active arteries. This elucidates the clinical significance of dPET in the early detection of active inflammation and monitoring recurrence.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Robotics has been used safely and successfully in a variety of adult surgeries and is gradually gaining ground in pediatrics. While the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery in disease treatment are well recognized, its high cost has led to questions. To investigate whether robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery (RALS) is cost-effective compared to conventional laparoscopic surgery (LS) in pediatric surgery, we attempted to construct a model to perform an analysis of these two surgical approaches using Python statistical analysis software. METHODS: We selected four common complex pediatric surgical conditions (choledochal cyst, Hirschsprung's disease, vesicoureteral reflux, and congenital hydronephrosis) from three systems (pediatric hepatobiliary, gastroenterology, and urology). Models were constructed using Python statistical software to compare hospital costs and surgical outcomes for RALS and LS. In addition, we performed a preferred strategy analysis for both surgical modalities while assessing model uncertainty using one-way sensitivity analysis. RESULTS: For the four diseases, the operative time decreased sequentially. The total inpatient costs of RALS were 10,816.72, 9145.44, 8414.29, 7973.58 dollars, respectively, yielding 1.789, 1.712, 1.749, 1.792 quality adjustment life years (QALYs) over two years post-operatively. The incremental cost of RALS relative to LS for each disease was 3523.44, 3200.20, 3049.79, 3043.66 dollars, respectively, with an incremental utility of 0.060, 0.054, 0.051, 0.050 QALYs. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) for RALS for each of the four diseases were 58,724.01, 59,262.95, 59,799.79, 60,873.20 dollars/QALY, all less than 100,000 dollars/QALY. The cost of robot consumables was the main incremental cost of RALS and had the most significant impact on the model. CONCLUSION: For the four pediatric surgical conditions described above, RALS has higher inpatient costs than LS, but it has better postoperative outcomes, and all four RALS treatments are cost-effective. Children with complex diseases and long operative times appear to benefit more from RALS.

RESUMO

A main function of dose-response assessment is to estimate a "safe" dose in the target population to support chemical risk assessment. Typically, a "safe" dose is developed differently for cancer and noncancer effects based on a 2-step procedure, ie, point of departure (POD) derivation and low-dose extrapolation. However, the current dose-response assessment framework is criticized for its dichotomized strategy without integrating the mode of action (MOA) information. The objective of this study was, based on our previous work, to develop a MOA-based probabilistic dose-response framework that quantitatively synthesizes a biological pathway in a dose-response modeling process to estimate the risk of chemicals that have carcinogenic potential. 3,3',4,4',5-Pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB-126) was exemplified to demonstrate our proposed approach. There were 4 major steps in the new modeling framework, including (1) key quantifiable events (KQEs) identification and extraction, (2) essential dose calculation, (3) MOA-based POD derivation, and (4) MOA-based probabilistic reference dose (RfD) estimation. Compared with reported PODs and traditional RfDs, the MOA-based estimates derived from our approach were comparable and plausible. One key feature of our approach was the use of overall MOA information to build the dose-response relationship on the entire dose continuum including the low-dose region. On the other hand, by adjusting uncertainty and variability in a probabilistic manner, the MOA-based probabilistic RfDs can provide useful insights of health protection for the specific proportion of population. Moreover, the proposed framework had important potential to be generalized to assess different types of chemicals other than nonmutagenic carcinogens, highlighting its utility to improve current chemical risk assessment.

RESUMO

Previous studies demonstrated that ASP-3 was a novel calcium-binding protein from Arca subcrenata that effectively inhibited the proliferation of HepG2 cells. To further study the antitumor activity and mechanism of ASP-3, the cytotoxic effects of recombinant ASP-3 were evaluated in HepG2 cells. The results demonstrated that ASP-3 inhibited the proliferation of HepG2 cells by competitively binding to the EGF binding pocket of EGFR and inhibiting the JAK-STAT, RAS-RAF-MEK-ERK, and PI3K-Akt-mTOR signaling pathways mediated by EGFR. ASP-3 significantly inhibited tumor growth in a HepG2 cell subcutaneous xenograft nude mouse model, and its (25 mg/kg and 75 mg/kg) tumor inhibition rates were 46.92 % and 60.28 %, respectively. Furthermore, the crystal structure of ASP-3 was resolved at 1.4 Å. ASP-3 formed as a stable dimer and folded as an EF-Hand structure. ASP-3 stably bound to domain I and domain III of the EGFR extracellular region by using molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation analysis. Compared with the endogenous ligand EGF, ASP-3 displayed a stronger interaction with EGFR. These experimental results indicated that recombinant ASP-3 possessed an effective anti-hepatoma effect. So, it might be a potential molecule for liver cancer therapy.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: [68Ga]Ga-FAPI PET/CT has been widely used in clinical diagnosis and radiopharmaceutical therapy. In this study, tumor-to-blood ratio (TBR) was evaluated as a powerful tool for semiquantitative assessment of [68Ga]Ga-FAPI-04 tumor uptake and as an effective index for tumors with high FAP expression in theranostics. METHODS: Nine patients with pancreatic cancer underwent a 60-min dynamic PET/CT scan by total-body PET/CT (with a long AFOV of 194 cm) after injection of [68Ga]Ga-FAPI-04. After dynamic PET/CT scan, three patients received chemotherapy and underwent the second dynamic scan to evaluate treatment response. Time-activity curves (TACs) were obtained by drawing regions of interest for primary pancreatic lesions and metastatic lesions. The lesion TACs were fitted using four compartment models by the software PMOD PKIN kinetic modeling. The preferred pharmacokinetic model for [68Ga]Ga-FAPI-04 was evaluated based on the Akaike information criterion. The correlations between simplified methods for quantification of [68Ga]Ga-FAPI-04 (SUVs; tumor-to-blood ratios [TBRs]) and the total distribution volume (Vt) estimates obtained from pharmacokinetic analysis were calculated. RESULTS: In total, 9 primary lesions and 25 metastatic lesions were evaluated. The reversible two-tissue compartment model (2TCM) was the most appropriate model among the four compartment models. The total distribution volume Vt values derived from 2TCM varied significantly in pathological lesions and background regions. A strong positive correlation was observed between TBRmean and Vt from the 2TCM model in pathological lesions (R2=0.92, P<0.001). The relative difference range for TBRmean was 2.1% compared to the reduction rate of Vt in the patients who were treated with chemotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: A strong positive correlation was observed between TBRmean and Vt for [68Ga]Ga-FAPI-04. TBRmean reflects FAP receptor density better than SUVmean and SUVmax, and would be the preferred measurement tool for semiquantitative assessment of [68Ga]Ga-FAPI-04 tumor uptake and as a means for evaluating treatment response.

RESUMO

AIM: To investigate the gender and socioeconomic disparities in the global burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) due to glomerulonephritis from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: Data were extracted from the global burden of diseases (GBD) 2019 study, including incidence, prevalence and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). Estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) were calculated to quantify the temporal trends in age-standardized rate (ASR) of CKD due to glomerulonephritis. Paired t-test, paired Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Spearman correlation were performed to analyse the association and gender disparity in CKD due to glomerulonephritis. RESULTS: Globally, incident cases of CKD due to glomerulonephritis increased 81% from 9 557 397 in 1990 to 17 308 071 in 2019. The age-standardized incidence rate increased by 1.47 compared with 1990 and DALYs increased by 1.35 compared with 1990 (per 100 000). The number of patients with CKD due to glomerulonephritis in low-middle SDI (3829917) and middle SDI (6268817) regions accounts for more than 55% of the total cases. CKD due to glomerulonephritis caused a higher burden including the incidence rate (p < .0001) and DALY rate (p < .0001) in men compared to women. The age-standardized DALY rate was negatively correlated with SDI (ρ = -0.64, p < .001). In the analysis of risk factors for DALYs, male individuals had a larger burden of hypertension, high BMI and high sodium diet in the DALY rates than female subjects. CONCLUSION: The burden of CKD due to glomerulonephritis was more skewed towards developing and less developed economies and differed by gender, so certain nations should implement far more focused and targeted policies.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: 18F-FDG PET/CT has an important role in the evaluation of fever of unknown origin (FUO) and inflammation of unknown origin (IUO). Our study was to investigate the current status of the inclusion of 18F-FDG PET/CT within FUO/ IUO diagnostic work-up and evaluate the cost-effectiveness of it in China. METHODS: A total of 741 FUO/IUO patients admitted to our hospital from January 2012 to December 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. The clinical characteristic, medical expenses to reach diagnosis and the proportion of definite etiological diagnosis achieved upon hospital discharge were compared between patients examined by 18F-FDG PET/CT (18F-FDG PET/CT group) and patients not examined by 18F-FDG PET/CT (non-18F-FDG PET/CT group). RESULTS: The mean age, proportion of critically-ill patients, proportion of rheumatologic diseases, the number of examinations and hospitalisation days to reach diagnosis in the 18F-FDG PET/CT group were significantly higher than those in the non-18F-FDG PET/CT group. The mean medical costs of 18F-FDG PET/CT group were significantly higher than those of non-18F-FDG PET/CT group, whereas the proportion of definite etiological diagnosis achieved upon hospital discharge of 18F-FDG PET/CT group was significantly higher than that of non-18F-FDG PET/CT group. The mean hospitalisation days and mean medical costs before diagnosis were significantly lower in patients who undertook 18F-FDG PET/CT ≤ 7 days after hospital admission than those in patients who undertook 18F-FDG PET/CT > 7 days after hospital admission. CONCLUSIONS: 18F-FDG PET/CT is mostly used in critically-ill and hard-to-diagnose FUO/IUO patients currently in China, which may conceal its cost-effective advantage. While the early use of 18F-FDG PET/CT according to patient characteristics and etiological clues could help to reduce hospitalization stay, limit medical costs, thus producing its diagnostic effect to the great extent.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Carbapenem-resistant (CR) Acinetobacter baumannii is a concerning pathogen in the USA and worldwide. METHODS: To assess the comparative burden of CR vs carbapenem-susceptible (CS) A. baumannii, this retrospective cohort study analyzed data from adult patients in 250 US hospitals from the Premier HealthCare Database (2014-2019). The outcomes analyzed included hospital length of stay (LOS), intensive care unit (ICU) utilization, discharge status, in-hospital mortality, readmission rates and hospital charges. Logistic regression was used for univariate and multivariable assessment of the independent relationship between relevant covariates, with a focus on CR status, and in-hospital mortality. RESULTS: 2047 Patients with CR and 3476 patients with CS A. baumannii infections were included. CR A. baumannii was more commonly isolated in respiratory tract infections (CR 40.7% and CS 27.0%, P < 0.01), whereas CS A. baumannii was more frequently associated with bloodstream infections (CS 16.7% and CR 8.6%, P < 0.01). Patients with CR A. baumannii infections had higher in-hospital (CR 16.4% vs CS 10.0%; P < 0.01) and 30-day (CR 32.2% vs CS 21.6%; P < 0.01) mortality compared to those with CS infections. After adjusting for age, sex, admission source, infection site, comorbidities, and treatment with in vitro active antibiotics within 72 h, carbapenem resistance was independently associated with increased mortality (adjusted odds ratio 1.42 [95% confidence interval 1.15; 1.75], P < 0.01). CR infections were also associated with increases in hospital length of stay (CR 11 days vs CS 9 days; P < 0.01), rate of intensive care unit utilization (CR 62.3% vs CS 45.1%; P < 0.01), rate of readmission with A. baumannii infections (CR 17.8% vs CS 4.0%; P < 0.01) and hospital charges. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that the burden of illness is significantly greater for patients with CR A. baumannii infections and are at higher risk of mortality compared with CS infections in US hospitals.

RESUMO

The oxygen based membrane biofilm (O2-MBfR) has been proved to be a novel technology in treating greywater (GW) and response surface methodology (RSM) was used to model the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN) with operation parameters COD/TN ratio, system pH and lumen air pressure (LAP). Results indicated that the all target single factors affect GW treatment efficiency, and the regression model with central composite design (CCD) showed good agreement with the experimental results with high R2 and R2 adj values (all >0.97) for all the target responses. Statistical evaluation revealed that system pH was the most significant parameter affecting COD and TN removal, followed by COD/TN ratio and LAP. The interaction between COD/TN ratio and system pH also played an important role on the GW treatment. The optimized maximum removal of COD (96.48%) and TN (133 g N/m2-day) were achieved with the COD/TN ratio 17.76 g COD/g TN, system pH 7.10 and LAP 1.00 psi. Thus, RSM combined with CCD could be used for predicting the organics and nitrogen removal during GW treatment in the O2-MBfR.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria and represent a major healthcare burden. Carbapenem-resistant (CR) strains of Enterobacterales and non-lactose fermenting pathogens further complicate treatment approaches. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the US Premier Healthcare Database (2014-2019) in hospitalised adults with a UTI to estimate the healthcare burden of Gram-negative CR UTIs among patients with or without concurrent bacteraemia. RESULTS: Among the 47,496 patients with UTI analysed, CR infections were present in 2076 (4.4%). Bacteraemia was present in 24.5% of all UTI patients, and 1.7% of these were caused by a CR pathogen. The most frequent CR pathogens were Pseudomonas aeruginosa (49.4%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (14.2%). Patients with CR infections had a significantly longer hospital length of stay (LOS) (median [range] 8 [5-12] days vs 6 [4-10] days, P < 0.001), were less likely to be discharged home (38.4% vs 51.0%, P < 0.001), had a higher readmission rate (22.6% vs 13.5%, P < 0.001), and had greater LOS-associated charges (mean US$ 91,752 vs US$ 66,011, P < 0.001) than patients with carbapenem-susceptible (CS) infections, respectively. The impact of CR pathogens was greater in patients with bacteraemia (or urosepsis) and these CR urosepsis patients had a significantly higher rate of mortality than those with CS urosepsis (10.5% vs 6.0%, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Among hospitalised patients with UTIs, the presence of a CR organism and bacteraemia increased the burden of disease, with worse outcomes and higher hospitalisation charges than disease associated with CS pathogens and those without bacteraemia.

RESUMO

Cadmium (Cd) exposure has become a growing public health issue and the level of urinary Cd is commonly used as the internal biomarker of overall Cd exposure. There has been raised a concern whether the level of Cd in a single spot urine actually reflects individual internal exposure over a long-term period. We aimed to examine the variability of urinary Cd levels over three years. Levels of urinary Cd were determined repeatedly in 2238 general adults during a follow-up of three-year from a community-based prospective study. We estimated the intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) of urinary Cd level over three years using the three-level random-effects mixed models to assess their variations. We found that the Pearson correlations for urinary Cd over three years were 0.521 for uncorrected Cd, 0.632 for creatinine (Cr)-corrected Cd, and 0.551 for specific gravity (SG)-corrected Cd, respectively (all P < 0.001). Moderate reproducibility was obtained for urinary Cd over three years, where ICCs of the three methods all exceeded 0.50. Of note, Cr-corrected urinary Cd levels achieved high reproducibility [0.773, 95%CI (0.750-0.794)]. Additionally, positive dose-response associations of smoking amount with Cr-corrected urinary Cd level were observed (P trend <0.05). Our findings suggest that Cr-corrected urinary Cd level in a single measurement was a credible biomarker for the relatively long-term levels of urinary Cd in the general population and cigarette smoking plays a part of urinary Cd exposure.

RESUMO

Health insurance is an essential instrument to ensure equal access to medical resources and promote the health of the general population. Robust evidence regarding whether migrant workers have benefited from available insurance schemes is limited. Drawing on survey data from the Rural Urban Migration in China (RUMiC) Project, this paper examines the effects of health insurance on migrant workers' utilization of routine medical services, the medical burden, and the utilization of preventive medical services using a two-part model, the Heckman model, the Tobit model, and a probit model. Our findings indicate that, first, participating in medical insurance increases migrant workers' probability of visiting a doctor. Unlike other medical insurance programs that positively affect migrant workers' medical expenditure, the new rural cooperative medical system fails to play an effective role. Second, participation in any medical insurance program effectively reduces migrant workers' medical burden and can improve the probability of preventive medical service utilization. Third, self-reported health and disease severity are pivotal to determining migrant workers' medical expenditure. Fourth, high-income people have a good health status and a lower probability of becoming ill and can afford relatively higher medical expenses once they become ill. China's medical insurance appears to mainly serve to reduce the financial burden for serious illnesses, reflecting important policy implications for policy-makers.

RESUMO

Rapid economic development and urbanization necessitate an understanding of anthropogenic effects on coastal eutrophication. It is a significant challenge for governments to alleviate water degradation and remediate coastal ecosystems. Shenzhen Bay in China, located in a developed and populous area, was selected to analyze the decadal scale influence of anthropogenic activities on eutrophication as well as the effectiveness of governmental remediation strategies. The results showed that the contribution of nutrients from anthropogenic sources accounted for over 80% of the total loads into the bay. Beginning in 1990, increased anthropogenic activities resulted in the loss of environmental capability and resilience, exacerbated eutrophication and water quality degradation. However, the status of eutrophication has been improved since 2005, following the application of intensive management actions implemented in 2000. The practice of eutrophication control suggested that, in view of technical and engineering feasibility, coastal strategies for similar shallow bays should initially reduce phosphorus, followed by nitrogen and eco-remediation to alleviate the serious aquatic situation immediately. The recovery period of eutrophication would be at least five years after governmental actions from Shenzhen Bay's experience. Furthermore, simulated scenarios indicated that eutrophication ranking of Shenzhen Bay could reach and remains medium Moderate, following a 35% reduction in total nitrogen and a 20% reduction in total phosphorus with corresponding eco-remediation.

RESUMO

With the rapid urbanization in China, soil environments are facing high risks. Taking a typical urbanized area as a case study, a total of 106 surface soil samples (0-20 cm) and 96 subsurface soil samples (20-40 cm) were collected to determine the concentrations of heavy metals, and then, the Nemerow index and Hankson index methods were used to evaluate their degrees of ecological risk. The spatial distributions of ecological risks were also explored. Experimental results showed that the concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, and Hg in surface soil samples were 2.87-84.64, 1.40-56.00, 2.75-125.05, 15.05-201.39, 1.46-89.92, 0.001-0.92, 15.29-160.07, and 0.006-0.52 mg·kg-1, respectively, and those in subsurface soil samples were 3.56-75.14, 1.65-71.58, 3.28-290.04, 17.99-296.94, 3.07-65.67, 0.02-1.00, 11.10-97.59, and 0.01-0.41 mg·kg-1, respectively. According to the risk control standards for soil contamination of agricultural land, approximately 71.70%, 40.57%, 4.72%, 3.77%, and 0.94% of Cd, Cu, Pb, As, and Zn, respectively, in the surface soil samples exceeded the standards, while 72.92%, 39.58%, 6.25%, 3.13%, 3.13%, and 1.04% of Cd, Cu, As, Zn, Pb, and Ni, respectively, in the subsurface soil samples exceeded the standards. Obviously, the pollution by Cd and Cu was the most severe in the research area, and the main contaminated areas were distributed in the northern part of the land. The soil environmental quality pollution assessment illustrated that high risk areas were distributed in the northern part of the research area too. The risk assessment results indicated that the main pollution factor was Cd, which is accordance with the serious pollution findings for Cd. In response to these results, effective management and remediation methods should be taken to control the soil environment pollution in this typical urbanized area.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This article investigates marital sorting by household registration status (hukou) and education in contemporary urban China, paying special attention to individuals who have achieved rural-to-urban hukou mobility before marriage. BACKGROUND: Existing theoretical frameworks of assortative mating have highlighted economic resources and cultural matching as two key dimensions. These two frameworks place different emphasis on individuals' achieved versus ascriptive characteristics, and hold different implications for understanding the link between marital sorting patterns and social openness/closure. With a focus on hukou converters, this study examines the relative importance of achieved versus ascriptive traits in China's marriage market and contributes to the evaluation of the two frameworks. METHOD: This study adopts a mixed-methods approach. The quantitative analysis uses the harmonic mean marriage function to analyze the nationally representative 2006 China General Social Survey. The qualitative data consist of 115 in-depth interviews collected in two Chinese metropolitan areas between 2016 and 2017. RESULTS: Quantitative results showed that hukou converters and urban-born individuals both had the highest propensity of marrying a spouse of the same hukou trajectory. Qualitative results further revealed the gap between converters and their urban-born peers to be hierarchical. Although both groups emphasized the importance of shared values and habitus in evaluating prospective partners, urban-born individuals regarded hukou converters as a culturally distinct and less desirable option. CONCLUSION: The findings highlight the power of cultural matching in China's urban marriage market. Hukou converters' rural origin remains visible and acts as a source of lasting symbolic distinction despite adulthood status attainment.

RESUMO

This paper proposes a methodology to process and interpret the complex signals acquired from the health monitoring of civil structures via scale-space empirical wavelet transform (EWT). The FREEVIB method, a widely used instantaneous modal parameters identification method, determines the structural characteristics from the individual components separated by EWT first. The scale-space EWT turns the detecting of the frequency boundaries into the scale-space representation of the Fourier spectrum. As well, to find meaningful modes becomes a clustering problem on the length of minima scale-space curves. The Otsu's algorithm is employed to determine the threshold for the clustering analysis. To retain the time-varying features, the EWT-extracted mono-components are analyzed by the FREEVIB method to obtain the instantaneous modal parameters and the linearity characteristics of the structures. Both simulated and real SHM signals from civil structures are used to validate the effectiveness of the present method. The results demonstrate that the proposed methodology is capable of separating the signal components, even those closely spaced ones in frequency domain, with high accuracy, and extracting the structural features reliably.
