Malnutrition remains a major public health challenge among children in developing countries, especially those experiencing civil wars and political unrest. It is imperative to ascertain the level of malnutrition, particularly in displaced children, to develop and effectively implement interventions. This study was a cross-sectional survey conducted to assess the nutritional status of 657 internally displaced school-aged children (5-15 years) enrolled in primary schools in the West and Littoral Regions of Cameroon. The height, weight, and mid-upper arm circumference of the children were measured using standard measurements. Clinical examinations were also made on the children. Other parameters that affect nutritional status, such as morbidity and health-seeking practices, were assessed using pre-tested, structured interviewer questionnaires. An analysis of the data revealed that stunting was the most prevalent form of malnutrition (27.1%), followed by wasting (23%), thinness (21.6%), and underweight (20.1%). About 44.5% of the children had low serum iron, and 35.7% of them had poor protein status. The prevalence of anemia was 30.0%. The most common signs of protein, vitamin A, and iron deficiencies observed were thin, dry, or sparse hair (5.2%), pallor (7.3%), and xerosis (3.3%), respectively. About 32% of the children had been sick within the previous month of the study, and the most common illness was the common cold (19.8%). Most of them (>60%) had good health-seeking practices. The high prevalence of stunting, wasting, thinness, underweight, anemia, protein, and iron deficiency calls for interventions such as nutrition education and supplementation to prevent malnutrition and diet-related diseases among children.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate assessment of nutritional status of adolescents as a population group is an important area of focus, considering the age of culminating growth, the size of the age group, the changing nutrition patterns, and as a window of opportunity for corrections before adulthood sets in. Nutritional status is now recognized to be a prime indicator of the health of individuals. The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes the importance of employing age- and sex-specific reference values (body mass index-for-age Z scores {BAZ} scores) for nutritional assessment in this age group. However, the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), the major source of data in India for the policymakers, reports the nutritional status of adolescents based on adult body mass index (BMI) cutoffs, which might not be as appropriate as compared to body mass index-for-age Z scores (BAZ) scores. Misclassification of nutrition status has impacts on public health policies, intervention programs, and long-term health outcomes for adolescents. METHODS: This secondary analysis of NFHS-5 data was performed with the objective of estimating the degree of agreement between BMI and BAZ cutoffs in classifying the nutritional status among Indian adolescents. The NFHS-5 data were collected from over 636,000 households across the country. Height and weight were measured for adolescents using standardized instruments. BMI and BAZ scores were derived to assess nutritional status. World Health Organization's classifications were used to categorize nutritional status based on BMI and BAZ scores. The final analysis included data from 109,340 adolescents (13,040 males and 96,300 females) after excluding subjects having BAZ outliers and those whose age was 179 months or less. RESULTS: Substantial discrepancies emerged between the two methods. BMI classifications underestimated nutritional status in almost 30% of adolescents compared to BAZ. Over one-third of normal-weight individuals by BAZ are classified as thin by BMI. Conversely, nearly 78% of obese adolescents by BMI are classified as overweight by BAZ. The agreements between the classifications improved with age and were better among males. CONCLUSION: This analysis highlights the limitations of BMI for assessing adolescent nutritional status and suggests that BAZ offers a more accurate and age-appropriate alternative.

Introduction: Recreational physical activity is becoming more popular due to the increased public awareness about the beneficial effects on health status and quality of life. The aim of the study was to assess the nutritional status and health behaviors of women who regularly practice yoga as a form of physical recreation and to compare them with those who had not practiced before and had just signed up for yoga classes. A total of 143 women took part in this study. Methods: The nutritional status was assessed based on the obtained anthropometric measurements. The following indicators were calculated: Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), determining the visceral accumulation of fat tissue. Health behaviors were assessed using a standardized five-point scale Health Behavior Inventory (HBI). Results: There were significant differences in the value of the general health behavior index, the sten scale, and the subscale regarding proper eating habits in the study groups compared to women who had not practiced yoga before (control group). Health behaviors indicators, particularly proper eating habits, are significantly higher in women participating regularly in yoga exercises, indicating a higher awareness among yoga practitioners. Conclusion: It can be suggested that yoga participation as a recreational physical activity can be an appropriate option for pursuing healthy habits.

Background and Aim: Leka Dullecha District, situated in East Wollega, Ethiopia, represents a region where infant and young child feeding practices play a crucial role in the health and well-being of the population. Understanding the prevailing feeding practices among children under 2 years old is essential for devising effective interventions to improve child nutrition and reduce mortality rates. The context of this study involves examining various factors influencing infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices, including socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental determinants. The main aim of the study was conducted to investigate the infant and young child feeding practice and associated factors among mothers of children 0-23 months in Leka Dullecha District, East Wollega, and Ethiopia. Method: A community-based, cross-sectional study design was carried out using 590 sample sizes. A stratified sampling method was used with simple random sampling technique. Bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with infant and young child feeding practices. Results: The overall prevalence of appropriate infant and young child feeding practice was estimated to 62.3%. According to this finding, age of child, place of delivery, and knowledge of mother were positively associated factors for inappropriate Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices. Conclusion: The overall infant and young child feeding practices in this study is not meeting the WHO guidelines for appropriate feeding practices. To achieve better feeding practices among 0-23 months aged children, intervention should focus on encouraging institution delivery and capacitating all health workers providing health education focusing on infant and young child feeding practices.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional assessment tools are used to predict outcomes in cancer. However, their utility in patients undergoing spinal surgery is unclear. This review examined if prognostic nutritional index (PNI), controlling nutritional status (CONUT), and geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) can predict adverse events after spinal surgeries. METHODS: PubMed, CENTRAL, Scopus, and Embase were screened by two reviewers for relevant studies up to 26th January 2024. The primary outcome of interest was total adverse events after spinal surgery. Secondary outcomes were surgical site infections (SSI) and mortality. RESULTS: 14 studies were included. Meta-analysis showed that while reduced PNI was not associated with an increased risk of SSI there was a significant association between PNI and higher risk of adverse events. Meta-analysis showed that high CONUT was not associated with an increased risk of complications after spinal surgeries. Pooled analysis showed that low GNRI was associated with an increased risk of both SSI and adverse events. Data on mortality was scarce. CONCLUSIONS: The PNI and GNRI can predict adverse outcomes after spinal surgeries. Limited data shows that high CONUT is also associated with a non-significant increased risk of adverse outcomes. High GNRI was predictive of an increased risk of SSI. Data on mortality is too scarce for strong conclusions.

Background: Malnutrition is an underdiagnosed condition that negatively affects the clinical outcomes of patients, being associated with an increased risk of adverse events, increased hospital stay, and higher mortality. Therefore, nutritional assessment is a required and necessary process in patient care. The objective of this study was to identify the factors associated with nutritional risk by applying the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) scale in a population of critically ill patients. Methods: This was an observational, analytical, and retrospective study. Sociodemographic, clinical, hematological, and biochemical variables and their relationship with nutritional risk and mortality were analyzed. Results: Of 630 patients, the leading cause of admission was pathologies of the circulatory and respiratory system (50%); 28.4% were at high nutritional risk; and mortality was 11.6% and associated with nutritional risk, hemoglobin, and plasma urea nitrogen. Conclusions: The presence of gastrointestinal symptoms and the type of nutritional support received during hospitalization could increase the likelihood of presenting a medium/high nutritional risk, while polycythemia reduced this probability. An associative model was found to determine nutritional risk with an adequate specificity and diagnostic validity index.

Aim: To assess the dental caries experience in relation to nutritional status among 6-12- year-old school-going children and those with congenital heart disease in Bhubaneswar city. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 6-12-year-old healthy school-going children and those with congenital heart disease for a period of 6 months (October 2019-March 2020) in Bhubaneswar, India. Type III clinical examination was carried out as per American Dental Association (ADA) specifications using plane mouth mirrors and community periodontal index (CPI) probes. Clinical oral examination and measurement of the weight and height of the child were performed by a single examiner. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0. Results: The overall mean decayed missing filled primary teeth surfaces (dmfs) in primary dentition was higher (5.93 ± 10.224) in subjects with congenital heart disease (CHD) (group I) than in healthy controls (3.41 ± 6.192). The overall mean decayed missing filled permanent teeth surfaces (DMFS) in permanent dentition was 0.33 ± 1.105 in subjects with CHD (group I) and 0.24 ± 0.714 in group II. In group I, the majority of them (58.9%) were underweight, followed by 41.1% who were a healthy weight. However, in group II, 47.9% of the study subjects were healthy weight, 26.1% were underweight, 14.4% were obese, and 11.7% were overweight. Conclusion: This study concluded that children with CHD have a higher dental caries experience and poor nutritional status as compared to healthy school-going children. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) combined with malnutrition results in decreased exercise capacity and a worse quality of life. We aimed to develop an observational case-control study to explore the effective and convenient method to identify potential individuals is lacking. This study included data from 251 patients with COPD and 85 participants in the control group. Parameters and body composition were compared between groups, and among patients with varied severity. The LASSO approach was employed to select the features for fitting a logistic model to predict the risk of malnutrition in patients with stable COPD. Patients with COPD exhibited significantly lower 6-min walk distance (6MWD), handgrip strength, fat-free mass index (FFMI), skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and protein. The significant predictors identified following LASSO selection included 6MWD, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), GOLD grades, the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) score, and the prevalence of acute exacerbations. The risk score model yielded good accuracy (C-index, 0.866 [95% CI 0.824-0.909]) and calibration (Brier score = 0.150). After internal validation, the adjusted C-index and Brier score were 0.849, and 0.165, respectively. This model may provide primary physicians with a simple scoring system to identify malnourished patients with COPD and develop appropriate rehabilitation interventions.

This paper presents baseline results from the NutriEcoMuscle study, a multicenter observational study conducted in Spain which focused on changes in nutritional status, body composition, and functionality in post-intensive care unit (ICU) COVID-19 patients following a nutritional intervention. Assessments at hospital discharge included Subjective Global Assessment (SGA), Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, the Barthel index, handgrip strength (HGS) and the Timed Up-and-Go test, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and nutritional ultrasound (US). The study involved 96 patients (71.9% male, mean age 58.8 years, mean BMI 28.8 kg/m2, 36.5% obese). All patients were malnourished at discharge according to GLIM and SGA. Functional status declined from admission up to hospital discharge. A total of 33.3% of patients had a low fat-free mass index (FFMI) and 29.5% had a low phase angle (PhA). Myosteatosis was observed in 83.7% of the population. There was a positive correlation between rectus femoris cross-sectional area, PhA, FFMI, and HGS. In conclusion, post-critically ill COVID-19 patients commonly suffer from malnutrition and reduced muscle mass, causing a loss of independence at hospital discharge. BIA and US could be valuable tools for assessing body composition in these patients. The NutriEcoMuscle study highlights the need for a thorough nutritional and morphofunctional status assessment of post-ICU patients.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional assessment on admission of critical patients is of vital importance to determine critical patients in whom there is a risk of malnutrition. Currently, it has been detected in most of the patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) that 60% of the daily calories are not achieved. Nurses play an essential role in the comprehensive assessment of the patient, including the nutritional area; however, significant deficits have been detected in some knowledge regarding Enteral Nutrition (EN). OBJECTIVE: We aim to determine the level of knowledge of nurses in the nutritional assessment of critically ill patients. METHODOLOGY: A systematic review of the scientific literature was conducted using the PRISMA statement. Between January 2017 and February 2023, articles were rescued from the electronic databases "Pubmed", "Scopus" and "The Cochrane Library", which analyzed the level of knowledge of ICU nurses regarding nutritional assessment. RESULTS: Most of the results found showed that nurses had deficient levels of knowledge in relation to nutritional assessment and practices. Interventions related to nutritional assessment were scarce, in contrast to those associated with the management of Nasogastric Tube (NGT) or patient positioning. CONCLUSIONS: The level of knowledge described was low or inadequate in relation to the care associated with the nutritional assessment of critically ill patients. The use of scales to assess the risk of malnutrition was not reported. This study was prospectively registered at PROSPERO on 25/10/2023 (insert date) with registration number CRD: 42023426924.

Objective: It is important to assess nutritional status to determine the presence of malnutrition because poor nutritional status will reduce the efficacy and increase the side effects of radiotherapy. The aim of this research was to assess nutritional status by comparing several parameters, namely anthropometry, biochemistry, physical condition, and inflammatory parameters, with Patient Generated-Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) as the gold standard. Methods: A cross-sectional study with 78 subjects was conducted at the General Hospital Dr. Sardjito Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 2022. The Malnutrition Screening Tool, Simple Nutrition Screening Tool, PG-SGA, and objective parameter data were used in the nutritional assessment. The objective parameters were determined by analyzing anthropometric data [body weight, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), and body fat], biochemical data (albumin and a complete blood profile), physical data (hand grip strength), and food intake data using the 1×24-hour recall method. The data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: Malnutrition was found in 33.3% of pre-radiotherapy head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. Patients with good nutritional status did not experience weight loss, decreased appetite, gastrointestinal symptoms, decreased functional capacity, or fat and/or muscle deficit (p<0.05). The findings showed a significant relationship between PG-SGA and nutritional status based on body weight, weight loss, MUACs, handgrip strength, visceral fat, resting metabolic rate (RMR), and hemoglobin (p<0.05). A better nutritional status was associated with higher parameter values. Conclusions: The method for nutritional status assessment in HNC patients undergoing radiotherapy can be performed by measuring body weight, weight loss, upper arm circumference, visceral fat, hemoglobin, and RMR in addition to PG-SGA as the gold standard.

Despite the global decrease over the last two decades, stunting, also called 'chronic malnutrition', remains a public health issue affecting almost 150 million children under the age of 5 years globally. Defined by height-for-age, stunting is the consequence of poor nutrition, repeated infection, and inadequate psychosocial stimulation. Programmes and policies target undernutrition globally, and humanitarian and development actors invest great efforts to prevent stunting. This study uses multivariate analysis to examine the impact of financial assistance on the reduction of stunting in a refugee context, focusing on Syrian refugee children under the age of 5 years in Türkiye. Using a unique dataset, the 2018 Turkey Demographic and Health Survey Syrian Migrant Sample (2018 TDHS-SR), the findings indicate that financial assistance significantly reduces the incidence of stunting among refugee children under the control of economic, mother and children, environmental, health-related and nutritional and breastfeeding characteristics. However, having household members generate income is found to be another stronger predictor to reduce stunting. The paper also argues that the nutritional well-being of refugee children might improve if forced migration occurs towards a stable host country/region. In addition, adaptation over time also seems to have a positive influence.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer cachexia constitutes a poor prognostic factor in patients with lung cancer. However, the factors associated with cancer cachexia remain unclear. This study aimed to identify factors that influence cancer cachexia in patients with lung cancer. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study conducted at the Kansai Medical University, 76 patients with lung cancer were evaluated for physical function, nutritional status (Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form) and physical activity (International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form) at the first visit to the rehabilitation outpatient clinic. The patients were divided into cachexia and noncachexia groups. The log-rank tests and Cox proportional hazards model were used to investigate the relationship between cachexia and prognosis. To examine the factors that influence cachexia, multivariate regression analysis with significant (P < 0.05) variables in the univariate logistic regression analysis was performed. Spearman's correlation analysis was performed to investigate the association between International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form and performance status. RESULTS: Overall, 42 patients (55.2%) had cachexia associated with survival time since their first visit to the outpatient rehabilitation clinic, even after confounders adjustment (hazard ratio: 3.24, 95% confidence interval: 1.12-9.45, P = 0.031). In the multivariate analysis, Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (odds ratio: 20.34, 95% confidence interval: 4.18-99.02, P < 0.001) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (odds ratio: 4.63, 95% confidence interval: 1.20-17.89, P = 0.026) were identified as independent factors for cachexia. There was no correlation between International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form and performance status (r = 0.155, P = 0.181). CONCLUSION: Malnutrition and low physical activity were associated with cachexia in patients with lung cancer. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form may be a useful indicator of physical activity in cachexia. Regularly assessing these factors and identifying suitable interventions for cachexia remain challenges to be addressed in the future.

Hospital food waste has nutritional, economic and environmental impacts, and halving food waste is a sustainable development goal. This study aimed to quantify hospital food waste and its nutritional, environmental and financial values in medical and surgical wards. In a cross-sectional study in three educational hospitals, nutritional and demographic data of adult inpatients were collected. The food waste was measured at breakfast, lunch and snack times, and a 24-hour food recall was fulfilled for each patient. Also, the nutritional, environmental and financial values of discarded food were calculated. Food waste contributors were determined using linear regression. Totally, 398 meals were evaluated. The average served food was about 1 kg patient-1 day-1, while 539.5 g patient-1 day-1(50.1% of the served food) was discarded. Mean food wastes were 148.9 g (standard deviation (SD): 130.1), 364.3 g (SD: 257.2) and 80.2 g (SD: 101.5) in breakfast, lunch and snacks, equal to 45.7% (SD: 36.9), 51.4% (SD: 36.1) and 62.4% (SD: 53.2) of the served food, respectively. Rice, soup, milk and fruits were mostly discarded. Severely malnourished patients had higher daily food waste. Food preparation and waste were estimated to cost on average US$1.8 and US$0.8 patient-1 day-1, respectively. Each kilogram of food waste resulted in 8.1 m2 of land use, 1.4 kg of CO2-equivalent gas emission, and about 1003 L of water wastage. Half of the hospital food was discarded which means waste of nutrients, environmental resources and money. Current data can help authorities to plan for reducing hospital food waste.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to validate the assessment of anorexia in patients with acute stroke using the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study assessed appetite using the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire in patients with acute stroke at discharge from an acute care hospital. Additionally, the relationship between the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire and Mini Nutritional Assessment, Mini Nutritional Assessment - Short Form scores, skeletal muscle mass, muscle strength, and activities of daily living measured using the Functional Independence Measures for the motor domain was investigated. A multiple regression analysis was conducted with the Functional Independence Measure for the motor domain as the dependent variable and the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire and other confounding factors as explanatory variables to evaluate the association between the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire and functional outcomes. RESULTS: Among the 234 patients with stroke analyzed in this study, the median Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire score was 15 (IQR = 13-16) points. The Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire score significantly correlated with weight change, Functional Independence Measure for the motor domain, nutritional assessment index, and energy and protein intake. However, no significant differences in body mass index, muscle mass, or muscle strength were observed. In the multiple regression analysis adjusted for confounders, the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire score (ß = 0.106; P = 0.007) was independently associated with the Functional Independence Measure for the motor domain (adjusted R2 = 0.662). CONCLUSIONS: This study's results found a significant correlation between Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire scores and nutritional status as well as an independent association with functional outcomes in patients with stroke. These findings suggest that the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire can be a valuable tool for evaluating anorexia in this patient population.

OBJECTIVE: The symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease may lead to reduced food consumption and in turn, malnutrition. It is therefore important to apply a reliable nutrition screening tool to evaluate the nutritional status of individuals with Parkinson's disease. This cross-sectional study aims to compare the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) questionnaire and the Geriatric Nutrition Risk Index (GNRI) in the assessment of the nutritional status of individuals with Parkinson's disease, and to evaluate the usability of the GNRI in cases of Parkinson's disease. METHODS: The study was conducted with 89 individuals over the age of 60 who were diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Study data were collected using a questionnaire form administered through face-to-face interviews, the MNA-Long Form (MNA-LF), and the GNRI was calculated. RESULTS: The mean GNRI scores were significantly lower in the participants with malnutrition (106.5 ± 19.4) than in the participants at risk of malnutrition (121.0 ± 10.3) and the participants with no malnutrition (125.3 ± 9.6) according to the MNA-LF (p < 0.001). Although there was a positive correlation between the MNA-LF and the GNRI scores, this correlation was not significant (p = 0.095). CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to research the nutritional status of individuals with Parkinson's disease using the GNRI. The malnutrition rate detected by GNRI was found to be lower than MNA in Parkinson's patients receiving outpatient treatment. Similar studies are recommended to determine the usability of GNRI on inpatients.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have found that the prognostic nutritional index (PNI), controlling nutritional status (CONUT), and Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS) of patients with laryngeal cancer accurately predict their prognosis. However, there is no consensus regarding the best assessment tool. Therefore, this study aimed to confirm the predictive value of the three nutritional scoring systems for the prognosis of patients with laryngeal cancer. METHODS: This study analyzed a cohort of 427 patients with laryngeal cancer who visited our hospital. PNI, CONUT, and GPS were calculated, and the relationship between these indicators and prognosis was examined. RESULTS: The optimal cut-off levels for overall survival (OS) of laryngeal cancer patients determined by PNI, CONUT, and GPS were 45, 3, and 0, respectively. When patients were stratified based on these thresholds, OS and disease-free survival (DFS) were significantly decreased in the malnutrition group (all three, p < 0.05). The OS rates of patients with laryngeal cancer were significantly affected by the three scores according to multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The three scoring methods had a high predictive value for the prognosis of patients with laryngeal cancer, with GPS having the strongest correlation with the prognosis of laryngeal cancer patients.

Background: Adolescence is a peculiar period of physical, sexual, psychosocial and cognitive development geared towards achieving their adult potentials. Adolescents are prone to malnutrition from unfavourable sociodemographic variables and sub-optimal nutrition. Objectives: The study aimed to assess the nutritional status and the sociodemographic variables associated with malnutrition among adolescents in a tertiary health facility in Rivers State, Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 10-17-year-old adolescents in the Paediatric Out-patient Clinic, River State University Teaching Hospital. A proforma was used to collect sociodemographic data from them before taking their anthropometric measurements. BMI- for-age Z scores were calculated using the WHO anthropometric calculator and nutritional status determined using the WHO classification. Univariate and multivariate data analysis was done using SPPS version 23. Statistical significance was set at P value < 0.05. Results: A total of 131 adolescents aged 10 to 17 years, with 72(55%) females participated in the study. Majority were urban dwellers, 61.1% attended private educational institutions, 46% were from middle socioeconomic class and 40(30.5%) from families with >4 children. The median weight and height of the study population were 47kg and 157cm respectively. The mean BMI-for-age Z score was -0.126±0.318. Twenty-six (19.9%) adolescents were overweight/obese while 9(6.9%) were too thin (wasting). Adolescents aged 10-13 years were significantly more overweight/obese than others while wasting was more prevalent among adolescents dwelling in rural communities, in primary schools and living in households with >4 children (p < 0.05). There was a 29-fold increased risk of wasting among children living in households with >4 children (P=0.002). Conclusion: The study highlights two extremes of malnutrition among adolescents with overnutrition more than two times that of undernutrition. Adolescents living in large households are at risk of undernutrition.
