OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether the costs of a successful tailored multifaceted strategy to improve hand hygiene compliance outweighed the savings by reducing infection costs in Dutch long-term care facilities (LTCFs). DESIGN: A retrospective cost analysis alongside a stepped-wedge cluster-randomized controlled trial. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: The study included 14 LTCFs (23 wards) in the Netherlands. METHODS: The cost analysis was based on the costs of the intervention vs the savings from avoided infections and associated treatment costs. Infection-related costs of the "usual-care" period were compared with the combined infection-related costs and intervention costs from the "intervention" period and the costs in the "post-intervention period." Multilevel analyses, with a linear model with periods as fixed effects, random effects for cluster LTCFs, and fixed effects for each step, were completed. RESULTS: There are no significant differences in total costs considering the 3 periods. When adjusting for time and clustering, the mean infection-related costs per week per LTCF for all the infections combined were highest during "usual-care" before the hand hygiene intervention was performed, namely 680 euros per week. Assuming the effect of the improvement strategy would be present for 12 months, the costs per week in the "intervention" and "post-intervention" periods were 627 euros (95% CI, 383-871) and 731 euros (95% CI, 508-954), respectively. Assuming the effect of the improvement strategy will last longer than 1 year (ie, 18 and 24 months), the average cost for the "intervention period" and the "post-intervention" period decreased to 615 euros and 719 euros during the intervention and 609 euros and 715 euros after the intervention, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Our multifaceted hand hygiene improvement strategy achieves cost savings. The results of our study are the first of an economic analysis of a hand hygiene improvement strategy in LTCFs. The results need to be confirmed by further economic evaluations.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's Disease (PD) demands early diagnosis and frequent assessment of symptoms. In particular, analysing hand movements is pivotal to understand disease progression. Advancements in hand tracking using Deep Learning (DL) allow for the automatic and objective disease evaluation from video recordings of standardised motor tasks, which are the foundation of neurological examinations. In view of this scenario, this narrative review aims to describe the state of the art and the future perspective of DL frameworks for hand tracking in video-based PD assessment. METHODS: A rigorous search of PubMed, Web of Science, IEEE Explorer, and Scopus until October 2023 using primary keywords such as parkinson, hand tracking, and deep learning was performed to select eligible by focusing on video-based PD assessment through DL-driven hand tracking frameworks RESULTS:: After accurate screening, 23 publications met the selection criteria. These studies used various solutions, from well-established pose estimation frameworks, like OpenPose and MediaPipe, to custom deep architectures designed to accurately track hand and finger movements and extract relevant disease features. Estimated hand tracking data were then used to differentiate PD patients from healthy individuals, characterise symptoms such as tremors and bradykinesia, or regress the Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) by automatically assessing clinical tasks such as finger tapping, hand movements, and pronation-supination. CONCLUSIONS: DL-driven hand tracking holds promise for PD assessment, offering precise, objective measurements for early diagnosis and monitoring, especially in a telemedicine scenario. However, to ensure clinical acceptance, standardisation and validation are crucial. Future research should prioritise large open datasets, rigorous validation on patients, and the investigation of new frontiers such as tracking hand-hand and hand-object interactions for daily-life tasks assessment.

BACKGROUND: Therapy use is common following carpal tunnel release (CTR), trigger finger release, ganglion cyst excision, De Quervain tenosynovitis release, carpometacarpal arthroplasty, and distal radius fracture, open reduction internal fixation or percutaneous pinning (DRF). Policy that improves coverage influences the cost and use of health care services. PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate changes to the cost and use of postoperative hand therapy by race and procedure following the repeal of a longstanding annual Medicare outpatient therapy cap. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: This is a longitudinal retrospective cohort study using a quasi-experimental interrupted time series design, including patients who underwent common hand surgeries from January 1, 2016-December 31, 2019. RESULTS: This study included 203,672 patients with a mean age of 71.4 years. Neither White (1.00, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.999-1.007, p = 0.45) nor non-White (1.00, 95% CI: 1.00-1.01, p = 0.06) patients experienced monthly changes in therapy use before policy implementation. Therapy frequency increased following CTR (odds ratio [OR] 1.12, 95% CI: 1.11-1.14, p < 0.001), trigger finger release (OR 1.09, 95% CI: 1.07-1.10, p < 0.001), and DRF (OR 1.05, 95% CI: 1.03-1.06, p < 0.001) following implementation. CONCLUSIONS: This study found that improved coverage was associated with increased postoperative therapy use among some subsets, including CTR and DRF, suggesting the need to optimize coverage by means such as prior authorization or bundled payments, rather than only increasing coverage benefits.

Objective: The study aimed to assess the construct validity of the Arab Hand Function Index and the Arabic Health Assessment Questionnaire in Algerian patients with systemic sclerosis. Methods: Consecutive Algerian patients who fulfilled the American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism criteria for systemic sclerosis were included. In addition to disease characteristics, global disability and hand disability were assessed using the Arabic Health Assessment Questionnaire and the Arab Hand Function Index, respectively. Construct validity was assessed by convergent and divergent validity (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient) and factor analysis. The scale reliability was assessed using the Cronbach's alpha. Results: We evaluated 100 systemic sclerosis patients (83 females) of mean ± standard deviation age 46.7 ± 12.3 years, including 59 limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis and 41 diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis. Raynaud's phenomenon was detected in 99 patients and digital ulcers in 25. Gastrointestinal tract involvement and interstitial lung disease were detected in 86/100 (86%) and 46/72 (63.9%) patients, respectively. Anti-topoisomerase I and anti-centromere antibodies were detected in 33/76 (43.4%) and 23/76 (30.3%) patients, respectively. The Arab Hand Function Index had a good construct validity with a total score explaining 61% of the variance of the Arabic Health Assessment Questionnaire which also had a good construct validity. Factor analysis of the Arab Hand Function Index and the Arabic Health Assessment Questionnaire items extracted two factors explaining 64% of the variance for the Arab Hand Function Index and one factor explaining 55% of the variance for the Arabic Health Assessment Questionnaire. The Arab Hand Function Index and the Arabic Health Assessment Questionnaire were reliable questionnaires with a Cronbach's alpha >0.8. Conclusion: In Algerian patients with systemic sclerosis, Arab Hand Function Index and Arabic Health Assessment Questionnaire have a good construct validity and reliability.

Fluorescence-related experimental techniques play an important role in biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology. However, fluorescence-related experiments are rarely included in the laboratory courses of most Chinese universities. This is mainly due to the conflict between large class size (50-60 students in one room) and funding/space limitations to purchase and accommodate enough fluorescence detection equipment. Here, we proposed feasible and economical Do It Yourself (DIY) procedures of a hand-held fluorescence detector set-FluorDetector to support the development of laboratory courses. Tested on several samples, clear fluorescence signals could be directly observed by FluorDetector and photographed with a smartphone. In addition, FluorDetector was able to turn a conventional stereomicroscope into a fluorescence stereomicroscope, detecting fluorescence signals with clean background. FluorDetector is easy to make with a 3D printer, with an extremely low cost ($200 each) when compared with a commercial fluorescence microscope or fluorescence stereomicroscope, and almost as sensitive as a microplate reader in measuring fluorescence. Therefore, FluorDetector is a possible strategy to solve the problem and help to integrate fluorescence-related experimental modules in laboratory courses.

Although goniometric measurement is considered the gold standard for the measurement of digital range of motion, visual estimation is often employed due to its simplicity despite being inconsistent with recommended guidelines. We evaluated the Rennes Universal Measurement Method, an innovative tool employing artificial intelligence to concurrently analyse hand joint angles based on a single photograph. We found a strong correlation between the goniometric method and the photograph-based approach (Spearman correlation coefficient 0.7). The mean standard error of measurement was -1° (SD 17°). Regarding reproducibility with different photographic angles, an excellent intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.9 was noted. The tool had a processing time of less than 0.1 s per hand, while traditional goniometric methods took 20-30 s per finger. Combining simplicity, high reproducibility and good inter-rater reliability, this is a potentially useful tool that can be used to monitor patient progress in place of traditional goniometry.

Background/Objectives: Erosive hand osteoarthritis (EHOA) is an aggressive form of hand osteoarthritis (OA) and a severely disabling condition. Patients affected by OA frequently lament symptoms suggestive of neuropathic pain (NP). The aim of our study was to ascertain the presence and severity of NP in patients with EHOA and correlate its presence with EHOA clinical characteristics. Methods: In this retrospective study, we included all consecutive EHOA patients with NP symptoms who underwent upper limb electroneurography (ENoG) and nerve ultrasound. The presence of NP was screened using the ID pain neuropathic pain-screening questionnaire (ID-Pain). In addition, the following NP questionnaires were also used: Douleur Neuropathique en 4 Questions (DN4), PainDETECT, and Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory (NPSI). Moreover, patients completed the Australian/Canadian Osteoarthritis Hand Index (AUSCAN) and Dreiser's algofunctional finger index questionnaires assessing EHOA disease activity. The following clinical and laboratory data were collected: age, sex, BMI, disease duration, intensity of pain (VAS 0-10), painful and swollen joints, and inflammatory indices, as well as C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Results: Of the 34 patients studied, 24 (70.6%) presented NP to the ID-Pain questionnaire. According to DN4, 14 (41.2%) patients had NP, while using the PainDETECT questionnaire, 67.6% had NP. Patients with NP were statistically younger and had a higher VAS pain score compared to subjects without NP. The ENoG and median nerve ultrasound were normal in 81% of patients, while four patients had carpal tunnel syndrome. The ID-Pain questionnaire correlated with the number of painful joints (r = 0.48, p = 0.03) and with the AUSCAN questionnaire (r = 0.37, p = 0.05). The DN4 questionnaire correlated with PainDETECT (r = 0.58, p < 0.01). The PainDETECT questionnaire correlated with VAS pain (r = 0.49, p = 0.02), the DN4 questionnaire (r = 0.58, p < 0.01), and AUSCAN (r = 0.51, p = 0.02). The NPSI questionnaire correlated negatively with BMI (r = -0.53, p = 0.01) and positively with the PainDETECT questionnaire (r = 0.49, p = 0.02). Conclusions: Our study revealed that 32% to 70% of EHOA patients exhibited symptoms consistent with NP, with observed variability depending on the questionnaire utilized. Despite patients frequently exhibiting symptoms compatible with NP, only 19% of patients presented alterations on ENoG and ultrasound examinations confirming CTS. This suggests a probable nociplastic component for pain in patients with EHOA, which warrants tailored treatment. In the present study, NP correlated with clinical and functional indices of EHOA.

BACKGROUND: Dupuytren's contractures (DC) are fibrous cords under the skin of the hand that cause one or more fingers to curl gradually and irreversibly towards the palm. These contractures are usually painless but can cause a loss of hand function. Two treatments for Dupuytren's contractures are widely used within the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK: removal of the contractures via surgery (limited fasciectomy) and division of the contractures via a needle inserted through the skin (needle fasciotomy). This study aims to establish the clinical and cost-effectiveness of needle fasciotomy (NF) versus limited fasciectomy (LF) for the treatment of DC in the NHS, in terms of patient-reported hand function and resource utilisation. METHODS/DESIGN: Hand-2 is a national multi-centre, two-arm, parallel-group randomised, non-inferiority trial. Patients will be eligible to join the trial if they are aged 18 years or older, have at least one previously untreated finger with a well-defined Dupuytren's contracture of 30° or greater that causes functional problems and is suitable for treatment with either LF or NF. Patients with a contracture of the distal interphalangeal joint only are ineligible. Eligible consenting patients will be randomised 1:1 to receive either NF or LF and will be followed up for 24 months post-treatment. A QuinteT Recruitment Intervention will be used to optimise recruitment. The primary outcome measure is the participant-reported assessment of hand function, assessed by the Hand Health Profile of the Patient Evaluation Measure (PEM) questionnaire at 12 months post-treatment. Secondary outcomes include other patient-reported measures, loss of finger movement, and cost-effectiveness, reported over the 24-month post-treatment. Embedded qualitative research will explore patient experiences and acceptability of treatment at 2 years post-surgery. DISCUSSION: This study will determine whether treatment with needle fasciotomy is non-inferior to limited fasciectomy in terms of patient-reported hand function at 12 months post-treatment. TRIAL REGISTRATION: International Standard Registered Clinical/soCial sTudy ISRCTN12525655. Registered on 18th September 2020.

Hand function is important in every aspect of our lives. Across a wide range of neuromuscular disorders-inherited ataxias, motor neuron diseases, polyneuropathies, and myopathies-people can experience losses in hand strength, tone, movement, dexterity, joint range, and sensation. Such changes can adversely affect function and independence in daily activities, reducing participation and quality of life. People with neuromuscular disorders (pwNMD) known to involve the hand should be assessed at regular intervals for changes both clinically and using impairment, performance, function, and patient-reported outcome measures as appropriate. A patient-centered approach to management is recommended, with clinicians partnering with the individual, their caregivers and the interprofessional teams to create personalized solutions that can overcome barriers to participation and best meet the goals of individuals affected by neuromuscular disorders. Management strategies should be multifaceted, and may include exercise, orthoses, assistive devices, technological solutions, environmental or task adaptations, medications, and/or surgery. Exercise recommendations and orthoses should be individualized and evolve based on disease progression, impairments, and functional limitations. While medications and surgery have a small role for specific clinical situations, there is a plethora of assistive and technological solutions to assist with basic and instrumental activities of daily living, work/education, and leisure for pwNMD with reduced hand function. In addition, clinicians should advocate for appropriate accommodations for reduced hand function at work/school, and the development of and adherence to legislation supporting accessibility and inclusion.

Multiple uncertainties such as water quality processes, streamflow randomness affected by climate change, indicators' interrelation, and socio-economic development have brought significant risks in managing water quantity and quality (WQQ) for river basins. This research developed an integrated simulation-optimization modeling approach (ISMA) to tackle multiple uncertainties simultaneously. This approach combined water quality analysis simulation programming, Markov-Chain, generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation, and interval two-stage left-hand-side chance-constrained joint-probabilistic programming into an integration nonlinear modeling framework. A case study of multiple water intake projects in the Downstream and Delta of Dongjiang River Basin was used to demonstrate the proposed model. Results reveal that ISMA helps predict the trend of water quality changes and quantitatively analyze the interaction between WQQ. As the joint probability level increases, under strict water quality scenario system benefits would increase [3.23, 5.90] × 109 Yuan, comprehensive water scarcity based on quantity and quality would decrease [782.24, 945.82] × 106 m3, with an increase in water allocation and a decrease in pollutant generation. Compared to the deterministic and water quantity model, it allocates water efficiently and quantifies more economic losses and water scarcity. Therefore, this research has significant implications for improving water quality in basins, balancing the benefits and risks of water quality violations, and stabilizing socio-economic development.

Health care systems, including operating rooms, are a considerable contributor to environmental waste. Given ongoing concerns regarding water scarcity in the United States and worldwide, action to reduce water utilization should be taken. Traditional water-based hand scrubbing wastes an estimated 11 L of water per scrub. Waterless hand rubbing with an alcohol-based solution has been shown to be as effective as traditional water-based hand scrubbing in surgical hand antisepsis and in preventing surgical site infections. Furthermore, alcohol-based rubbing results in less waste and reduced costs when compared with water-based hand scrubbing. The hand surgery operating room, including minor procedure rooms, serves as an opportunity to decrease water use and reduce the environmental impact of our field. Waterless alcohol-based hand rubbing for antisepsis may also be an opportunity to save money and provide value-based care to our patients.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to compare the performance of ChatGPT-3.5 (GPT-3.5) and ChatGPT-4 (GPT-4) on the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) Self-Assessment Examination (SAE) to determine their potential as educational tools. METHODS: This study assessed the proportion of correct answers to text-based questions on the 2021 and 2022 ASSH SAE between untrained ChatGPT versions. Secondary analyses assessed the performance of ChatGPT based on question difficulty and question category. The outcomes of ChatGPT were compared with the performance of actual examinees on the ASSH SAE. RESULTS: A total of 238 questions were included in the analysis. Compared with GPT-3.5, GPT-4 provided significantly more correct answers overall (58.0% versus 68.9%, respectively; P = 0.013), on the 2022 SAE (55.9% versus 72.9%; P = 0.007), and more difficult questions (48.8% versus 63.6%; P = 0.02). In a multivariable logistic regression analysis, correct answers were predicted by GPT-4 (odds ratio [OR], 1.66; P = 0.011), increased question difficulty (OR, 0.59; P = 0.009), Bone and Joint questions (OR, 0.18; P < 0.001), and Soft Tissue questions (OR, 0.30; P = 0.013). Actual examinees scored a mean of 21.6% above GPT-3.5 and 10.7% above GPT-4. The mean percentage of correct answers by actual examinees was significantly higher for correct (versus incorrect) ChatGPT answers. CONCLUSIONS: GPT-4 demonstrated improved performance over GPT-3.5 on the ASSH SAE, especially on more difficult questions. Actual examinees scored higher than both versions of ChatGPT, but the margin was cut in half by GPT-4.

OBJECTIVE: To determine which bones and which grades had the highest inter-rater variability when employing the Tanner-Whitehouse (T-W) method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four radiologists were recruited and trained in the T-W classification of skeletal development. The consistency and skill of the radiologists in determining bone development status were assessed using 20 pediatric hand radiographs of children aged 1 to 18 years old. Four radiologists had a poor concordance rate and were excluded. The remaining 20 radiologists undertook a repeat reading of the radiographs, and their results were analyzed by comparing them with the mean assessment of two senior experts as the reference standard. Concordance rate, scoring, and Kendall's W were calculated to evaluate accuracy and consistency. RESULTS: Both the radius, ulna, and short finger (RUS) system (Kendall's W = 0.833) and the carpal (C) system (Kendall's W = 0.944) had excellent consistency, with the RUS system outperforming the C system in terms of scores. The repeatability analysis showed that the second rating test, performed after 2 months of further bone age assessment (BAA) practice, was more consistent and accurate than the first. The capitate had the lowest average concordance rate and scoring, as well as the lowest overall concordance rate for its D classification. Moreover, the G classifications of the seven carpal bones all had a concordance rate less than 0.6. The bones with lower Kendall's W were likewise those with lower scores and concordance rates. CONCLUSION: The D grade of the capitate showed the highest variation, and the use of the Tanner-Whitehouse 3rd edition (T-W3) to determine bone age (BA) was frequently inconsistent. A more comprehensive description with a focus on inaccuracy bones or ratings and a modification to the T-W3 approach would significantly advance BAA.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Pancreatico-duodenectomy (PD) carries significant morbidity and mortality, with very few modifiable risk factors. Radiological evidence of sarcopenia is associated with poor outcomes. This retrospective study aimed to analyse the relationship between easy-to-use bedside nutritional assessment techniques and radiological markers of muscle loss to identify those patients most likely to benefit from prehabilitation. RESULTS: Data were available in 184 consecutive patients undergoing PD. Malnutrition was present in 33-71%, and 48% had a high visceral fat-to-skeletal muscle ratio, suggestive of sarcopenic obesity (SO). Surgical risk was higher in patients with obesity (OR 1.07, 95%CI 1.01-1.14, p = 0.031), and length of stay was 5 days longer in those with SO (p = 0.006). There was no correlation between skeletal muscle and malnutrition using percentage weight loss or the malnutrition universal screening tool (MUST), but a weak correlation between the highest hand grip strength (HGS; 0.468, p < 0.001) and the Global Leadership in Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria (-0.379, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Nutritional assessment tools give widely variable results. Further research is needed to identify patients at significant nutritional risk prior to PD. In the meantime, those with malnutrition (according to the GLIM criteria), obesity or low HGS should be referred to prehabilitation.

Background: Simulation models enable learners to have repeated practise at their own time, to master the psycho-motor and sensory acuity aspects of surgery and build their confidence in the procedure. The study aims to develop and evaluate the feasibility of a low-cost drilling model to train surgeons in the drilling task. The model targets three aspects of drilling - (1) Reduce plunge depth, (2) Ability to differentiate between bone and medullary canal and (3) Increase accuracy drilling in various angles. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted after obtaining ethics approval. We invited Consultants in the field of Orthopaedic or Hand Surgery to form the 'expert' group, and the 'novice' group consisted of participants who had no prior experience in bone drilling. We developed a drilling simulator model made from a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe filled with liquid silicone. This model cost less than US$5. An electric Bosch drill (model GBM 10 RE) with a 1.4 mm K-wire 10 cm in length (6.5 cm outside the drill) was used for drilling. The main outcomes of the study were time taken for drilling, plunge depth, ability to penetrate the far cortex and accuracy. Results: Thirty-one participants were recruited into the study, of which 15 were experts and 16 were novices. The experts performed significantly better for plunge depth (t = -3.65, p = 0.0003) and accuracy (t = -2.07, p = 0.04). The experts required 20% less time to complete the drilling tasks, but it was not statistically significant (t = -0.79, p = 0.43). Conclusions: The low-cost drilling model could be useful in training Residents in the drilling task. It will allow Residents to practise independently at their own time and assess their own performance.

The article presents a comprehensive framework for assessing the physical vulnerability of hand-dug wells within the Are Community, Southwestern Nigeria. The study spans from March to April 2023 and meticulously examines 90 wells, focusing on critical parameters such as well collar, well cover, and well lining information. The analysis reveals significant variations in well collar construction materials and dimensions, emphasizing the community's adaptive strategies. The Well Collar Height Index (WCi), Well Cover Index (WCOi), Well Lining Index (WLi), and the derived Vulnerability Index categorize wells into vulnerability classes, offering a nuanced understanding of susceptibility levels. Notably, the study identifies wells with Very High vulnerability that demand urgent attention, as well as wells with effective protective measures categorized as Very Low vulnerability. The article emphasizes the need for a nuanced understanding of local practices and materials, highlighting the variability in well collar construction. It discusses the implications of well cover conditions and the critical role of well linings in assessing groundwater vulnerability. The Vulnerability Index combines these parameters, guiding targeted interventions based on risk severity. The study lays the groundwork for future interventions to enhance the safety and sustainability of water sources within the Are Community. It recommends immediate comprehensive measures for highly vulnerable wells, ongoing monitoring, community engagement, and knowledge sharing. The future scope includes incorporating geochemical analysis, targeted interventions, regular maintenance, community training, and exploring alternative water sources for sustainable improvements.

Open reduction with internal fixation is a common approach for treating distal radius fractures. However, complications such as extensor tendon rupture can occur following this procedure. In this case report, we present a patient who experienced extensor tendon rupture following volar plate fixation of a distal radius fracture. The rupture was diagnosed preoperatively using ultrasound. We highlight the potential usefulness of ultrasound as a convenient and sensitive tool for diagnosing tendon injuries in patients with suspected complications following internal fixation of distal radius fractures. Furthermore, we discuss how ultrasound images can aid in localizing the site of tendon rupture and guide surgical incisions for smaller postoperative wound care, resulting in improved cosmetic outcomes.

The design and control of artificial hands remains a challenge in engineering. Popular prostheses are bio-mechanically simple with restricted manipulation capabilities, as advanced devices are pricy or abandoned due to their difficult communication with the hand. For social robots, the interpretation of human intention is key for their integration in daily life. This can be achieved with machine learning (ML) algorithms, which are barely used for grasping posture recognition. This work proposes an ML approach to recognize nine hand postures, representing 90% of the activities of daily living in real time using an sEMG human-robot interface (HRI). Data from 20 subjects wearing a Myo armband (8 sEMG signals) were gathered from the NinaPro DS5 and from experimental tests with the YCB Object Set, and they were used jointly in the development of a simple multi-layer perceptron in MATLAB, with a global percentage success of 73% using only two features. GPU-based implementations were run to select the best architecture, with generalization capabilities, robustness-versus-electrode shift, low memory expense, and real-time performance. This architecture enables the implementation of grasping posture recognition in low-cost devices, aimed at the development of affordable functional prostheses and HRI for social robots.

Embodiment is a complex concept related to the subjective perception of an object as it belongs to its own body. In general, this construct has been evaluated by means of questionnaires, but validation studies in other cultures and limitations related with barriers of language received little attention. The purpose of the present investigation was twofold: to validate the factorial structure of embodiment questionnaire (EQ) and to construct a pictographic scale (PAE) to measure embodiment without relapse verbal representations. In the first experiment, 136 participants underwent a Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI) procedure following both congruent and incongruent (control) visuo-tactile stimulations. Then, they evaluated embodiment illusion in EQ using a Likert-type scale to rate their agreement or disagreement with 27 statements and with a pictographic scale designed to assess their subjective experience of the illusion. Principal components analysis in EQ scores identified four components that emerged in both conditions: Embodiment, Disembodiment, Affect and Deafference. PAE scale was highly correlated with embodiment factor and can differentiate between conditions. In a second experiment, 30 participants underwent the RHI procedure, and they were assessed using PAE and proprioceptive drift. Results indicate a high positive correlation between PAE and post-illusion drift score. These results provide evidence about the consistency of the factorial structure of EQ across cultures, and we also provide a new pictographic tool that allows quick measurement of embodiment overcoming language barriers.

Gel manicures have become part of a popular personal care service in the last two decades due to increased longevity of the polish and the added strength to the nail plate. Prolonged exposure to nail ultraviolet (UV) lamps is required to cure the gel polish. Despite the increased use of UV nail lamps, there is limited consensus in the literature on the risk of skin malignancy associated with UV nail lamps. The objective of this article was to provide a systematic review of the risk of skin malignancy associated with the use of UV nail lamps and to synthesize evidence-based recommendations on their safe usage. A systematic review of the literature was conducted on the databases, Medline and Embase, in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. The search yielded 2,331 non-duplicate articles. Nine were ultimately included, of which three were case reports, one was a cross-sectional study, and five were experimental studies. The risk of bias per the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines was high or unclear, likely due to the number of case reports included. Prolonged and repeated exposure to UV nail lamps may pose a low risk of skin cancer. It is important to note that the available evidence is weak, and patients should be informed about the limited data to make their own decisions. Dermatologists and other healthcare providers should be updated with the latest evidence to address patients' concerns about gel manicures and suggest practices which can effectively reduce the risk of cutaneous malignancy associated with gel manicures, such as the use of UV-blocking gloves or properly applied sunscreens.
