RESUMO

Photoperiod manipulation is emerging as an effective approach for regulating physiological functions in fish. This study aimed to assess the impact of photoperiod on the growth performance, haematological responses, and economic returns of the endangered and highly valued Indian butter catfish, Ompok bimaculatus. Fish with an average body weight of 28.60 ± 4.78 g were randomly placed in six FRP tanks, each measuring 120 × 45 × 60 cm3. Each tank contained 20 fish exposed to a light intensity of 1500 lx under different photoperiods [24:0 light: dark (L: D), 15 L: 9D, 12 L: 12D, 9 L: 15D, 0 L: 24D and a natural photoperiod (control)], and fed at a daily rate of 2% of their body weight twice daily for 60 days. The fish in the 15 L: 9D photoperiod exhibited the highest final weight (g), percentage weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR) and survival rate, while the lowest was displayed in 24 L: 0D photoperiod group. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) was at its lowest in the catfish subjected to the 15 L: 9D photoperiod. Regarding haematological parameters, the 15 L: 9D photoperiod group showed higher total erythrocyte count, total leukocyte count, haemoglobin levels, and haematocrit values compared to the other groups. Conversely, the 0 L: 24D group, which experienced prolonged darkness, exhibited the lowest values in these parameters. Moreover, the 24 L: 0D, 9 L: 15D, and 0 L: 24D groups displayed a lower mean corpuscular volume (MCV) but higher mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) when compared to the control group. The economic analysis revealed that O. bimaculatus reared in a moderate photoperiod (15 L: 9D) displayed better growth, feed utilization, and overall health. This finding suggests that adopting a 15 L: 9D photoperiod can lead to enhanced production and improved economic returns for farmers culturing this high-value catfish in the future.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Haematological and liver fibrotic markers could be appreciably utilized for effective monitoring of Chronic Hepatitis B viral (HBV) infection, thereby increasing patient's treatment outcome. The objective of this study was to assess the applicability of complete blood count (CBC) and non-invasive liver-fibrotic indices as markers of prognostic outcome and monitoring in HBV infections. RESULTS: Significant differences in levels of white cell and differentials counts, red blood cell count, hemoglobin indices, and platelet indices were observed between HBV-infected patients (cases) and uninfected persons (controls). Levels of haemoglobin (Hb), total white blood cells (tWBC), neutrophils, monocytes, platelets, and Platelet Distribution width (PDW) were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in the cases compared to the controls. Total and indirect bilirubin; De-Ritis ratio, Aspartate transaminase to platelet ratio index (APRI) and RDW-to-platelet ratio (RPR) were elevated in cases compared with controls (p-value < 0.05). In a multivariate adjusted model to test the significance of markers, Hemoglobin Index (beta coefficient = - 0.876, p-value < 0.001), NLR (beta coefficient = - 0.839, p-value < 0.001), MPV_10000 (beta coefficient = - 0.333, p-value < 0.001) and Albumin (beta coefficient = - 0.059, p-value = 0.014), were associated with HBV infection status. Receiver operative characteristics curve analysis showed Hemoglobin Index (AUC = 0.744) and MPV_10000 (AUC = 0.730) as better prognostic markers for HBV-infection.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The search for affordable and accurate predictors of the outcome of COVID-19 is extremely important, as it provides the possibility to effectively correct the patient treatment tactics. AIM OF THE STUDY: To develop simple and accurate criteria based on the dynamics of red blood counts that predict the outcome of COVID-19. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observations were carried out in 125 patients with severe and extremely severe COVID-19, in whom indicators characterizing the state of red blood were determined in dynamics on days 1, 5, 7, 10, 14 and 21 after the hospitalization. ROC analysis was performed to calculate the threshold predictive values for survival and mortality. RESULTS: The total number of erythrocytes and the level of hemoglobin in severe and extremely severe patients did not go beyond the acceptable limits, although showed a tendency to decrease in the group of fatal cases. On the 1st and 21st days, the number of MacroR in the deceased patients was reduced compared to those in group of survivors. It has been established that the RDW-CV test can predict the outcome of the COVID-19 with a high degree of probability at a relatively early stage of disease. RDW-SD test can be an additional predictive criterion of COVID-19 outcome. CONCLUSION: The RDW-CV test can be used as an effective predictor of disease outcome in patients with severe COVID-19.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to assess the natural annual trends in the levels of haemoglobin, haematocrit, and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) in a population of adults, together with the influence of different clinical parameters on these trends. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was carried out on data from a large cohort of subjects attending a screening centre in Israel. For each subject, the yearly average change of haemoglobin, haematocrit, and MCV was calculated. Statistical analysis was performed for the whole cohort and for different subgroups. RESULTS: The study included 3,551 subjects. The average annual rates of decline were found to be -0.0550 g/dL (95% confidence interval [CI] -0.0590 g/dL to -0.0503 g/dL) and -0.097% (95% CI -0.112% to -0.083%) for haemoglobin and haematocrit, respectively. An average annual increase in the MCV level by 0.184 fL (95% CI 0.168 fL-0.200 fL) was found. Among men, the rate of decline in haemoglobin was found to be twice as high compared with women -0.06 g/dL versus -0.03 g/dL, respectively (p = 0.0063). In a multivariate analysis, gender remained the only parameter significantly associated with the annual decline of haemoglobin (p = 0.0001). CONCLUSION: An annual average decrease in the levels of haemoglobin and haematocrit together with an annual increase in MCV was found. These changes were more prominent in men.

RESUMO

Anemia and iron deficiency continue to be the most prevalent nutritional disorders in the world, affecting billions of people in both developed and developing countries. The initial diagnosis of anemia is typically based on several markers, including red blood cell (RBC) count, hematocrit and total hemoglobin. Using modern hematology analyzers, erythrocyte parameters such as mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), etc. are also being used. However, most of these commercially available analyzers pose several disadvantages: they are expensive instruments that require significant bench space and are heavy enough to limit their use to a specific lab and lead to a delay in results, making them less practical as a point-of-care instrument that can be used for swift clinical evaluation. Thus, there is a need for a portable and economical hematology analyzer that can be used at the point of need. In this work, we evaluated the performance of a system referred to as the cell tracking velocimetry (CTV) to measure several hematological parameters from fresh human blood obtained from healthy donors and from sickle cell disease subjects. Our system, based on the paramagnetic behavior that deoxyhemoglobin or methemoglobin containing RBCs experience when suspended in water after applying a magnetic field, uses a combination of magnets and microfluidics and has the ability to track the movement of thousands of red cells in a short period of time. This allows us to measure not only traditional RBC indices but also novel parameters that are only available for analyzers that assess erythrocytes on a cell by cell basis. As such, we report, for the first time, the use of our CTV as a hematology analyzer that is able to measure MCV, MCH, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), red cell distribution width (RDW), the percentage of hypochromic cells (which is an indicator of insufficient marrow iron supply that reflects recent iron reduction), and the correlation coefficients between these metrics. Our initial results indicate that most of the parameters measured with CTV are within the normal range for healthy adults. Only the parameters related to the red cell volume (primarily MCV and RDW) were outside the normal range. We observed significant discrepancies between the MCV measured by our technology (and also by an automated cell counter) and the manual method that calculates MCV through the hematocrit obtained by packed cell volume, which are attributed to the artifacts of plasma trapping and cell shrinkage. While there may be limitations for measuring MCV, this device offers a novel point of care instrument to provide rapid RBC parameters such as iron stores that are otherwise not rapidly available to the clinician. Thus, our CTV is a promising technology with the potential to be employed as an accurate, economical, portable and fast hematology analyzer after applying instrument-specific reference ranges or correction factors.

RESUMO

The ASTRIO study was a randomised, multicentre, 24-week study that compared the effects of ferric citrate hydrate (FC) and non-iron-based phosphate binders (control) on anaemia management in haemodialysis (HD) patients receiving erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs). In that study, FC reduced the doses of ESAs and intravenous iron without affecting haemoglobin (Hb); however, the cost-effectiveness of FC was unclear. We retrospectively implemented a cost-effectiveness analysis comparing the incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) in FC (n = 42) and control (n = 40) groups in patients with serum phosphate and Hb controlled within the ranges of 3.5-6.0 mg/dL and 10-12 g/dL, respectively. Costs included drug costs of phosphate binders, ESAs, and intravenous iron. Elevated red cell distribution width (RDW) has been reported to be associated with mortality in HD patients and was therefore used as an effectiveness index. The mean (95% confidence interval) differences in drug costs and RDW between the FC and control groups were US$ - 421.36 (- 778.94 to - 63.78, p = 0.02) and - 0.83% (- 1.61 to - 0.05, p = 0.04), respectively. ICER indicated a decrease of US$ 507.66 per 1% decrease in RDW. FC was more cost-effective than non-iron-based phosphate binders. Iron absorbed via FC could promote erythropoiesis and contribute to renal anaemia treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Reticulocyte indices have been suggested as alternatives to transferrin saturation (TSAT) for iron status assessment in humans and dogs but they have not been evaluated thoroughly in cats. OBJECTIVES: To assess the value of the reticulocyte indices for the diagnosis of iron deficiency in cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and chronic hematuria associated with subcutaneous ureteral bypasses (SUBs). ANIMALS: Sixty-four cats: 16 healthy, 14 CKD without SUB, and 34 CKD with SUB. METHODS: Prospective observational cross-sectional study of cats presented for routine nephrology visits. Primary outcomes included assessment of the diagnostic values of erythrocyte indices (mean corpuscular volume, hemoglobin, and hemoglobin concentration: MCV, MCH, and MCHC) and reticulocyte indices (mean corpuscular volume, MCVr; corpuscular hemoglobin, CHr), using TSAT as reference. RESULTS: Iron deficiency was diagnosed in 9/64 cats (14%). A receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis yielded a moderate discriminatory value for CHr in this diagnosis: area under the curve [AUC] = .75 (95% confidence interval, 0.48-0.89); P = .006; sensitivity 67%, specificity 82% for a cutoff of 15.9 pg. This compared favorably to MCVr (AUC = .63; P = .29), MCV (AUC = .58; P = .45), MCH (AUC = .64; P = .19), and MCHC (AUC = .7; P = .03). CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: CHr added moderate value to the diagnosis of iron deficiency in cats with CKD.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate complete blood count (CBC)-derived inflammatory indices in central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). METHODS: A total of 42 patients with CRAO (CRAO group) and 42 age- and sex-matched subjects without CRAO (Control group) were included. CBC parameters including red cell distribution width (RDW) levels were assayed. Platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and neutrophil/ lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were calculated. RESULTS: RDW, PLR, SII and NLR values were significantly higher in CRAO group than control group [15.2 ± 1.47% vs 13.96 ± 1.13% (p < .001), 127.94 ± 48.21 vs 101.16 ± 24.84 (p = .008), 667.11 ± 357.84 vs 493.44 ± 207.07 (p = .008), 2.70 ± 1.27 vs 2.13 ± 0.83 (p = .018), respectively]. In multivariate analysis only RDW was independent predictor for CRAO (OR 2.317, p < .001). On ROC analysis, area under curve of RDW, PLR, SII, and NLR for CRAO were 0.761, 0.685, 0.622 and 0.618, respectively. CONCLUSION: RDW seems superior to other inflammatory indices to predict CRAO.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Several discriminating techniques have been proposed to discriminate between ß-thalassemia trait (ßTT) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA). These discrimination techniques are essential clinically, but they are challenging and typically difficult. This study is the first application of the Bayesian tree-based method for differential diagnosis of ßTT from IDA. METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 907 patients with ages over 18 years old and a mean (±SD) age of 25 ± 16.1 with either ßTT or IDA. Hematological parameters were measured using a Sysmex KX-21 automated hematology analyzer. Bayesian Logit Treed (BLTREED) and Classification and Regression Trees (CART) were implemented to discriminate ßTT from IDA based on the hematological parameters. RESULTS: This study proposes an automatic detection model of beta-thalassemia carriers based on a Bayesian tree-based method. The BLTREED model and CART showed that mean corpuscular volume (MCV) was the main predictor in diagnostic discrimination. According to the test dataset, CART indicated higher sensitivity and negative predictive value than BLTREED for differential diagnosis of ßTT from IDA. However, the CART algorithm had a high false-positive rate. Overall, the BLTREED model showed better performance concerning the area under the curve (AUC). CONCLUSIONS: The BLTREED model showed excellent diagnostic accuracy for differentiating ßTT from IDA. In addition, understanding tree-based methods are easy and do not need statistical experience. Thus, it can help physicians in making the right clinical decision. So, the proposed model could support medical decisions in the differential diagnosis of ßTT from IDA to avoid much more expensive, time-consuming laboratory tests, especially in countries with limited recourses or poor health services.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy, tolerability, and cost of four commonly prescribed oral iron preparations: ferrous sulfate (FS), ferrous fumarate (FF), ferrous ascorbate (FA), and carbonyl iron (CI) in the treatment of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) in pregnant women. METHODS: It was a prospective, randomized, open-label, blinded endpoint (PROBE) design with four parallel active control groups: FS, FF, FA, CI. The primary outcome was the proportion of participants becoming non-anemic (Hb ≥ 11 g%) at the end of the study period. The secondary outcomes were the proportion of participants achieving normal red blood corpuscular indices such as mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration; the proportion of participants achieving normal iron indices such as serum iron, serum ferritin, total iron-binding capacity, and transferrin saturation; and comparison of incidence of any adverse events between treatment groups and comparison of costs of individual drug therapy between treatment groups. RESULTS: One hundred and twenty patients were randomized to four different groups (n = 30). The results of the present study show that all the four iron salts at the dose of 200 mg elemental iron per day were equally effective in improving hemoglobin concentration and other hematological parameters. The adverse effects were more common in the FF group (56.7%). The pharmacoeconomic analysis showed that all the drugs are equally cost-effective. CONCLUSION: To conclude from the results of the present study, it can be said that FS, FF, FA, and CI are equally effective in treating IDA and they can be prescribed interchangeably.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The aim of our study was to examine the relationship of hepcidin-25 with red blood cell and reticulocyte indices and to evaluate the diagnostic properties of hepcidin-25 in the assessment of positive iron balance in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. METHODS: Eighty anemic ESRD patients (hemoglobin < 110 g/L) were classified as having iron deficiency (ID, N = 20), iron sufficiency (IS, N = 29), and positive iron balance (PB, N = 31) using the conventional biomarkers for iron status evaluation. Hepcidin-25 was determined by a chemiluminescent direct ELISA. RESULTS: Hepcidin-25 was significantly negatively correlated with the proportion of hypochromic erythrocytes (%HYPO) (P = .034) and immature reticulocyte fraction (P = .010) in ID and with the absolute reticulocyte concentration in ID (P = .048) and PB (P = .040). In multivariate models, hepcidin-25 was independently negatively associated with the mean reticulocyte hemoglobin content (CHr; ß = -0.493, P = .004) and red blood cell size factor (RSf) (ß = -0.334, P = .036) only in the PB group. The best hepcidin-25 value to exclude PB was 66.13 µg/L, showing a sensitivity of 61.3%, a specificity of 75.5%, and an AUC of 0.808. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that hepcidin-25 levels are independently negatively associated with the iron demand for the most recent erythropoiesis only in PB. Hepcidin-25 performed acceptable in discriminating anemic ESRD patients with positive iron balance and may prove to be a useful additional tool in the evaluation of iron status.

RESUMO

In this study, the relationship between the brain parenchymal density, the cerebral vessel density, the mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) content, the mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and the morbidity associated with lacunar infarction of residents living in either the plains or the plateau regions were analyzed and compared for their potential clinical implications. Clinical data from the brain CT scans of individuals living in either the plain or plateau regions (129 each) were collected. Specifically, the CT values for basal ganglia, the middle cerebral artery, and the superior sagittal sinus, along with the number of patients with lacunar infarction, were collected. In addition, the MCH and MCHC values were measured in blood samples collected within 48 h following the CT scans. For statistical analysis, an independent sample t-test, Pearson's correlation test (permutation test), and Chi-squared test were employed. The inhabitants of the plateau had a significantly higher CT value of basal ganglia, the middle cerebral artery, and superior sagittal sinus and also higher levels of MCH and MCHC in the blood (ps < 0.001) than the inhabitants of the plains region. Further, there was a significant positive correlation between the three aforementioned CT values and the MCH and MCHC findings. However, no significant differences were found in the morbidity of lacunar infarction between these two regions (p > 0.05). The inhabitants in the plateau have a significantly higher brain parenchymal density, higher CT value for cerebral vessels density, and higher blood MCH and MCHC levels in comparison with individuals occupying the plains. Concurrently, the parenchymal density and the CT values are shown to be positively correlated with the MCH and MCHC content in the blood.

RESUMO

We reviewed blood product use in 729 consecutive allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) recipients at our center to assess the volume of red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets required after allo-HCT. The median number of bags required by day 30 was 4 for RBCs (range 0-22) and 9.5 for platelets (0-53). Multivariate analysis showed that related peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) required a significantly lower RBC transfusion volume by day 30 compared to unrelated bone marrow transplantation (UBMT). PBSCT from haplo-identical related donors and cord blood transplantation (CBT) required a significantly greater RBC transfusion volume. For platelet transfusion, related and unrelated PBSCT required a significantly lower volume than UBMT, and CBT a greater volume. Other factors independently associated with greater RBC transfusion volume were male sex, disease status other than complete remission, and major ABO mismatch. For platelet transfusion, these were male sex, disease status, and HCT-specific comorbidity index of 1. Although the burden of blood transfusions may not be the most important factor when choosing a donor type, our findings may provide a foundation for nationwide strategies to prepare blood products and inform aspects of national healthcare expenditures.

RESUMO

Humans are occupationally exposed to volatile petroleum hydrocarbons through inhalation and ingestion. To access the effect of exposure to volatile hydrocarbons, hematopoietic cytokines, haematological parameters and hepatic functions were assayed for in 100 subjects. Male participants showed significant increase (p < 0.05) in erythropoietin, interleukin-3, alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean cell volume (MCV) and significant decrease (p < 0.05) in mean cell hemoglobin (MCH). Female participants showed significant increase (p < 0.05) in interleukin-3, ALT, AST, ALP, MCHC, MCV and significant decrease (p < 0.05) in MCH, platelets, hemoglobin and hematocrit compared to their controls. Exposure to volatile petroleum hydrocarbons raised the absolute red blood cell indices and liver enzymes and could stimulate combined increase in the release of erythropoietin and interleukin-3 leading to ineffective hematopoiesis.

RESUMO

Low serum ferritin is diagnostic of iron deficiency, yet its published lower cut-off values are highly variable, particularly for pediatric populations. Lower cut-off values are commonly reported as 2.5th percentiles, and is based on the variation of ferritin values in the population. Our objective was to determine whether a functional approach based on iron deficient erythropoiesis could provide a better alternative. Utilizing 64,443 ferritin test results from pediatric electronic health records, we conducted various statistical techniques to derive 2.5th percentiles, and also derived functional reference limits through the association between ferritin and erythrocyte parameters: hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, mean cell hemoglobin concentration, and red cell distribution width. We find that lower limits of reference intervals derived as centiles are too low for clinical interpretation. Functional limits indicate iron deficiency anemia starts to occur when ferritin levels reach 10 µg/L, and are largely similar between genders and age groups. In comparison, centiles (2.5%) presented with lower limits overall, with varying levels depending on age and gender. Functionally-derived limits better reflects the underlying physiology of a patient, and may provide a basis for deriving a threshold related to treatment of iron deficiency and any other biomarker with functional outcomes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a predictor of adverse outcomes in patients with heart disease. AIM: To establish predictors of high RDW values in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD), and their relationship with cardiovascular events. METHODS: Overall, 561 patients with stable CHD who attended a single outpatient clinic and a matched control population of 2128 patients were studied. Exclusion criteria were renal failure, anaemia, receiving iron therapy and cyanosis. Blood tests included glucose, creatinine, iron, apoferritin, liver enzymes and a complete blood count. C-reactive protein and N-terminal prohormone of B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP) concentrations were also measured in patients with CHD. Major adverse cardiac events (MACE) were defined as cardiovascular/total mortality, arterial thrombotic events, arrhythmias, major bleedings, pulmonary embolism or heart failure needing hospital admission. RESULTS: The median age in patients with CHD was 23 (17-36) years and the median follow-up time was 5.8 (3.2-8.7) years; 103 (4.8%) controls and 40 (7.1%) patients with CHD had an RDW>15% (P=0.032). During follow-up, MACE were reported in 48 patients. CHD of great complexity, cardiovascular risk factors, low haemoglobin concentration and high NT-pro-BNP concentration were risk factors for an RDW>15%. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a significantly worse cardiovascular outcome in patients with CHD with an RDW>15% (P<0.001). The multivariable survival analysis determined that age, CHD of great complexity, high NT-pro-BNP concentration and an RDW>15% were independent predictive factors for MACE. CONCLUSION: RDW and NT-pro-BNP concentration are independent analytical predictors of MACE in patients with CHD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although the clinical assessment of iron status is usually based on iron stores, a rapid and accurate diagnosis of iron deficiency is challenging since ferritin is often unavailable as an urgent test and its value is frequently increased in acute phase conditions. This study was therefore aimed at evaluating the diagnostic performance of the new Sysmex XN "Iron Deficiency?" (Iron-Def) parameter for identifying patients with iron deficiency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 688 consecutive patients (median age: 71 years; 341 women and 347 men), referred for routine diagnostics to the Laboratory of Clinical Pathology of Lecco Hospital, Italy. A complete clinical chemistry profile and haematological testing were performed for identifying iron deficiency anaemia. RESULTS: A significant negative correlation was found between Sysmex XN Iron-Def and ferritin, serum iron, mean cell haemoglobin concentration, mean cell haemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume and age, while a positive correlation was noted with transferrin, percentage of microcytic red cell, red blood cell count and red blood cell distribution width. The diagnostic accuracy of Iron-Def for identifying patients with a percentage of saturation of transferrin <15% (n=104) was 84%, with a sensitivity of 0.952 and specificity of 0.538. A sub-analysis of 71 patients with ferritin <20 ng/dL yielded an even better diagnostic performance (86%, with a sensitivity of 0.935 and specificity of 0.620). DISCUSSION: Although additional confirmatory investigations would be needed, the preliminary findings of our study attest that Iron-Def may be an easy, inexpensive, rapid and reliable parameter for screening iron deficiency anaemia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Petrol is the non-specific term for petroleum which is used for inside combustion of engines. Petrol filling workers are highly vulnerable to occupational exposure to these harmful substances which lead to hemato-toxicity and blood disorders such as leukemia, aplastic anemia, and dysplastic bone marrow. Thus, this study was aimed to assess hematological parameters of petrol filling workers in Gondar town, Northwest Ethiopia. METHODS: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted from January to March 2019 in Gondar town, Northwest Ethiopia. A total of 110 study participants comprising 55 study groups and 55 controls group were recruited by a convenient sampling technique. Socio-demographic data were collected using a structured questionnaire, and 3 ml of venous blood was collected for the determination of hematological parameters. The data were entered into Epi info 7.2.0.1 and analyzed by SPSS version of 20. Mean, standard deviation, median, and interquartile ranges were used to present the data. Independent t test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to compare the mean or median difference between parametric and non-parametric hematological parameters, respectively. Moreover, Pearson product-moment and Spearman's rank-order bivariable correlations analyses were used to describe the correlation between hematological parameters and duration of exposure to petrol. A P value of ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The study revealed that mean red blood cell count and hemoglobin level as well as the median hematocrit, mean cell hemoglobin concentration, platelet count, absolute lymphocytes count, and red cell distribution width values of petrol filling workers showed a significant increment compared with the control group. On the other hand, the mean cell hemoglobin value of petrol filling workers showed a significant decrement compared with healthy controls. Moreover, the duration of exposure to petrol showed a significant positive correlation with red blood cell count and mean cell hemoglobin concentration; however, a significant negative correlation was observed with mean cell volume. CONCLUSION: This study showed that the majority of hematological parameters of petrol filling workers showed an increment compared with healthy controls which might be associated with exposure to petrol chemicals. However, further longitudinal study with a larger sample size should be conducted to explore the impact of petrol exposure on hematopoiesis.
