RESUMO

Inertial measurement units (IMUs) offer a portable and quantitative solution for clinical movement analysis. However, their application in non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) remains underexplored. This study compared the spine and pelvis kinematics obtained from IMUs between individuals with and without NSLBP and across clinical subgroups of NSLBP. A total of 81 participants with NSLBP with flexion (FP; n = 38) and extension (EP; n = 43) motor control impairment and 26 controls (No-NSLBP) completed 10 repetitions of spine movements (flexion, extension, lateral flexion). IMUs were placed on the sacrum, fourth and second lumbar vertebrae, and seventh cervical vertebra to measure inclination at the pelvis, lower (LLx) and upper (ULx) lumbar spine, and lower cervical spine (LCx), respectively. At each location, the range of movement (ROM) was quantified as the range of IMU orientation in the primary plane of movement. The ROM was compared between NSLBP and No-NSLBP using unpaired t-tests and across FP-NSLBP, EP-NSLBP, and No-NSLBP subgroups using one-way ANOVA. Individuals with NSLBP exhibited a smaller ROM at the ULx (p = 0.005), LLx (p = 0.003) and LCx (p = 0.01) during forward flexion, smaller ROM at the LLx during extension (p = 0.03), and a smaller ROM at the pelvis during lateral flexion (p = 0.003). Those in the EP-NSLBP group had smaller ROM than those in the No-NSLBP group at LLx during forward flexion (Bonferroni-corrected p = 0.005), extension (p = 0.013), and lateral flexion (p = 0.038), and a smaller ROM at the pelvis during lateral flexion (p = 0.005). Those in the FP-NSLBP subgroup had smaller ROM than those in the No-NSLBP group at the ULx during forward flexion (p = 0.024). IMUs detected variations in kinematics at the trunk, lumbar spine, and pelvis among individuals with and without NSLBP and across clinical NSLBP subgroups during flexion, extension, and lateral flexion. These findings consistently point to reduced ROM in NSLBP. The identified subgroup differences highlight the potential of IMU for assessing spinal and pelvic kinematics in these clinically verified subgroups of NSLBP.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Today, primary care professionals' (PCPs) perspectives on hospital quality are unknown when evaluating hospital quality priorities. The aims of the present study were to identify key healthcare quality attributes from PCPs' perspective, to validate an instrument that measures PCPs' experiences of healthcare quality multidimensionally and to define hospital quality priorities based on PCPs' experiences. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Focus groups with PCPs were conducted to identify quality attributes through a qualitative in-depth analysis. A multicentre study of 18 hospitals was used to quantitatively assess construct, discriminant and criterion validity of the FlaQuM-Quickscan, an instrument that measures 'Healthcare quality for patients and kin' (part 1) and 'Healthcare quality for professionals' (part 2). To set quality priorities, scores on quality domains were analyzed descriptively and between-hospital variation was examined by evaluating differences in hospitals' mean scores on the quality domains using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: Identified key attributes largely corresponded with Lachman's multidimensional quality model. Including 'Communication' as a new quality domain was recommended. The FlaQuM-Quickscan was completed by 550 PCPs. Confirmatory factor analyses showed reasonable to good fit, except for the Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) in part 2. The 'Equity' domain scored the highest in parts 1 and 2. Domains 'Kin-centred care' and 'Accessibility and timeliness' scored the lowest in part 1 and 'Resilience' and 'Partnership and co-production' in part 2. Significant variation in hospitals' mean scores was observed for eleven domains in part 1 and sixteen domains in part 2. CONCLUSIONS: The results gained a better understanding of PCPs' perspective on quality. The FlaQuM-Quickscan is a valid instrument to measure PCPs' experiences of hospital quality. Identified priorities indicate that hospital management should focus on multifaceted quality strategies, including technical domains, person-and kin-centredness, core values and catalysts.

RESUMO

Purpose: To explore the morphological alterations in small pulmonary vessels in populations at high risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and smokers based on multiple computed tomography (CT) quantitative parameters. Patients and Methods: A total of 1969 Three Major Chest Diseases Screening Study participants with available demographic data and smoking history who underwent low-dose chest CT from 2018 to 2020 were included. All subjects were divided into normal, high risk for COPD, and COPD groups according to their pulmonary function test (PFT) results. Furthermore, the three groups were further subdivided into never-smokers, current smokers, and former smokers subgroups according to their smoking history. Quantitative parameters, such as the number, area at 6 mm~24 mm subpleura and volume of small pulmonary vessels, were extracted by computer software. Differences in small pulmonary vessel parameters among the groups were compared using two-way ANOVA. Results: The number, area at 6 mm~24 mm subpleura and volume of small pulmonary vessels in the group at high risk for COPD were lower than those in the normal group (P<0.05). The number, area at 6 mm~24 mm subpleura and volume of small pulmonary vessels in the COPD group were higher than those in the normal group (P<0.05). The number, area of small pulmonary vessels at 6 mm~12 mm subpleura in current smokers with high risk for COPD were higher than those in former smokers with high risk for COPD (P<0.05). Conclusion: The number, area, and volume of small pulmonary vessels in populations at high risk for COPD were decreased. Smoking cessation may impede structural changes in small pulmonary vessels in populations at high risk for COPD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Vaccination is a primary prevention approach to preventing disease by disconnecting the transmission chain. The current study utilized a BASNEF model framework to identify factors influencing subsequent doses of COVID-19 vaccination among older adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed in the west of Iran in May 2022. The participants were selected via multi-stage sampling. Finally, 1120 participants contributed to the present study. The questionnaire consisted of three sections: a) Socio-demographic characteristics, b) cognitive impairments tests, and c) Questionnaire about the subsequent dose of COVID-19 vaccine uptake based on the BASNEF model. Data were analyzed using the software IBM AMOS-20 and SPSS-23 via one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and independent sample T-tests were used, too. The significance level of statistical tests was regarded as less than 0.05. RESULTS: The presented results of analyzing 50% of the variance of vaccination intention as the dependent variable (R square = 0.497) and 10% of the behavior variance as the dependent variable (R square = 0.104) can be explained based on the BASNEF model. The enabling factors (ß = 0.636, p < 0.001) and the intention (ß = 0.322, p < 0.001) were important factors for subsequent doses of COVID-19 vaccine uptake in older adults. CONCLUSION: So, planning and implementing promotional intervention programs for older people (over 65; 80), females, illiterate, widows and divorced, good economic status, and urban areas is essential. It seems that enabling factors such as free vaccinations, vaccination inaccessible places such as public social security agencies, social supports such as involvement of the government and physicians, and improving information by the medium or knowledge-sharing experience, which can be further used to enhance the acceptance of subsequent doses of COVID-19 uptake in older adults.

RESUMO

At the United Nations General Assembly, the Chinese government promised to reach the peak of carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve a relative balance between carbon dioxide production and offsetting by 2060. The research aims to explore the relationship between carbon trading prices and stock prices in various high emission industries in China and analyze the attitudes and behaviors of enterprises towards carbon trading. From a market perspective, this topic has important theoretical significance and practical value for promoting energy transformation, encouraging enterprises to reduce emissions, and controlling greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, understanding the behavior and attitude of enterprises in the carbon market is also of great significance for formulating policies and measures to develop the carbon trading market. The study used the VAR model to empirically analyze the relationship between carbon trading prices and stock prices. Granger causality test, impulse response analysis, and variance decomposition analysis are used for analysis. The research results indicate that the contribution rate of carbon trading prices in the first phase is 100%, which gradually decreases to the lowest value of 98.27% in the eighth phase. The stock price contribution rates of the water, electricity, and gas supply industries reach a peak of 0.74% in the second period and gradually decrease to 5.2% in the eighth period. The contribution rate of stock prices in other industries has gradually increased. At present, the carbon trading market in China is still in the development stage, and it is necessary for the government to adopt various policies to regulate it, including encouraging enterprises in high emission industries to increase investment in emission reduction, strengthening the supervision of the carbon trading market, providing technical support and green innovation incentives, strengthening enterprise emission reduction awareness and information disclosure.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the ability of a Large Language Model - ChatGPT 3.5 to appraise the quality of scientific methodology reporting in head and neck specific scientific literature. METHODS: Authors asked ChatGPT 3.5 to create a grading system for scientific reporting of research methods. The language model produced a system with a max of 60 points. Individual scores were provided for Study Design and Description, Data Collection and Measurement, Statistical Analysis, Ethical Considerations, and Overall Clarity and Transparency. Twenty articles were selected at random from The American Head and Neck Society's (AHNS) fellowship curriculum 2.0 for interrogation and each 'Methods' section was input into ChatGPT 3.5 for scoring. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed between different scoring categories and a post-hoc tukey HSD test was performed. RESULTS: Twenty articles were assessed, eight were categorized as very good and nine as good based on cumulative score. Lowest mean score was noted with category of statistical analysis (Mean = 0.49, SD = 0.02). On ANOVA a significant difference between means of the different scoring categories was noted, F(4, 95) = 13.4, p ≤ 0.05. On post-hoc Tukey HSD test, mean scores for categories of data collection (Mean = 0.58, SD = 0.06) and statistical analysis (Mean = 0.49, SD = 0.02) were significantly lower when compared to other categories. CONCLUSION: This article showcases the feasibility of employing a large language model such as ChatGPT 3.5 to assess the methods sections in head and neck academic writing.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the efficacy of bioactive glass, self-assembling peptide, and ozone-remineralizing agents on the artificial carious lesion. Material and Methods: On the extracted 60 premolar teeth, an artificial carious lesion/demineralization was created. Later, the remineralization of demineralized teeth was done with respective remineralizing agents (Group A: Calcium sodium phosphosilicate (bioactive glass), Group B: Self-assembling peptide, Group C: Ozone remineralizing agents and Group D (Control): De ionized water. The degree of demineralization and remineralization were evaluated using the Vickers Hardness Number. Results: There was a decrease in microhardness from baseline to demineralization in all the groups, and this reduction was found to be statistically considerable. After the remineralization of demineralized samples with respective remineralizing agents, there was an increase in microhardness of 312.38, 276.67, and 254.42 in groups A, B, and C, respectively. In contrast, in Group D, there were no changes. Conclusion: Bioactive glass and self-assembling peptides had higher remineralizing capacities, which can be used to treat early carious lesions.

RESUMO

Objectives: The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of iron overload and the real-world clinical effectiveness of the iron chelation therapies (ICTs) in Syrian patients with transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia major (BTM) prior to and during the ongoing Syrian conflict. Methods: This single-center, two-stage observational study was conducted at Homs National Thalassemia Center (HNTC) prior to (2009) and during (2019) the armed conflict. The prevalence and the severity of iron overload, as well as the effectiveness of four iron chelation regimens, were assessed using serum ferritin (SF) concentrations as a means of monitoring in two cohorts of BTM patients receiving deferoxamine (DFO), deferiprone (DFP), deferasirox (DFX), or a combination of DFO and DFP therapy in both years. Statistical analyses encompassed one-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, and chi-square (χ2) tests for the comparisons of the variables and the frequencies between the two cohorts and subgroups. Results: We included all eligible BTM patients at HNTC in 2009 (n = 205) and 2019 (n = 172). Only 84 patients from the 2009 cohort were accessible in 2019. Our findings revealed that 98% and 89% of the patients had iron overload (SF ≥ 1500 ng/mL) and comparable elevated median SF concentrations (3868 and 3757 ng/mL) in 2009 and 2019, respectively (P = 0.275). Furthermore, patients on DFO demonstrated the poorest control of iron overload and the highest SF concentrations (4319 and 5586 ng/mL), whereas those on DFX achieved superior outcomes and the lowest SF concentrations (3355 and 2152 ng/mL) in both years. Twenty-six patients from the 2019 cohort received no ICT for six years (from 2012 to 2018) and experienced extremely severe iron overload with SF levels ranging between 4481 and 16,000 ng/mL. Conclusions: Our findings prove a high prevalence of iron overload and suboptimal chelation outcomes in Syrian BTM patients, both prior to and during the ongoing armed conflict, despite the provision of free ICTs at HNTC. Poor adherence and older age of patients may explain the unfavorable outcomes of DFO and (DFO+DFP) regimens, whereas younger age and higher socioeconomic status may have contributed to the lowest SF and superior outcomes in patients on DFX. This study also demonstrates the crucial role of the National Thalassemia Centers, namely HNTC, in providing health services to BTM patients in times of peace and conflict.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the quality and reliability of YouTube videos about bowel management in children. METHODS: On April 6th, 2023, the search results for "bowel management in children" on YouTube were rated independently by two authors. JAMA Benchmark Criteria (score 0-4) and a modified DISCERN tool (score 16-80) used for quality and reliability assessment. Data was analyzed by Chi-square test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: Out of 48 videos included, 15 (31.2%) videos were intended for professionals and 33 (68.8%) for the public. The mean number of views was 144.806 and duration was 22 ± 28.4 min. The respective mean duration of videos for professionals 57.7 ± 21.4 min and median number of views was 404.5 (17-8.840) and those for public was 5.7 ± 10.7 min and 8400 (8-5.175.975) (both, p < 0.005). The respective mean DISCERN and JAMA scores of the videos for the public was 45.30 ± 13.18 and 2.93 ± 1.07, and for professionals 75.73 ± 6.52 and 3.8 ± 1.06 (both, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Although the reliability of the videos uploaded for the professionals about pediatric bowel management was higher than for public, duration of the videos was longer and the viewing rates were lower. Shorter but comprehensive and easy-to-understand guidance videos for the public may be of help. TYPE OF STUDY: Descriptive study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: IV.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Spectral CT imaging parameters have been reported to be useful in the differentiation of pathological grades in different malignancies. This study aims to investigate the value of spectral CT in the quantitative assessment of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) with different degrees of differentiation. METHODS: There were 191 patients with proven ESCC who underwent enhanced spectral CT from June 2018 to March 2020 retrospectively enrolled. These patients were divided into three groups based on pathological results: well differentiated ESCC, moderately differentiated ESCC, and poorly differentiated ESCC. Virtual monoenergetic 40 keV-equivalent image (VMI40keV), iodine concentration (IC), water concentration (WC), effective atomic number (Eff-Z), and the slope of the spectral curve(λHU) of the arterial phase (AP) and venous phase (VP) were measured or calculated. The quantitative parameters of the three groups were compared by using one-way ANOVA and pairwise comparisons were performed with LSD. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of these parameters in poorly differentiated groups and non-poorly differentiated groups. RESULTS: There were significant differences in VMI40keV, IC, Eff-Z, and λHU in AP and VP among the three groups (all p < 0.05) except for WC (p > 0.05). The VMI40keV, IC, Eff-Z, and λHU in the poorly differentiated group were significantly higher than those in the other groups both in AP and VP (all p < 0.05). In the ROC analysis, IC performed the best in the identification of the poorly differentiated group and non-poorly differentiated group in VP (AUC = 0.729, Sensitivity = 0.829, and Specificity = 0.569 under the threshold of 21.08 mg/ml). CONCLUSIONS: Quantitative parameters of spectral CT could offer supplemental information for the preoperative differential diagnosis of ESCC with different degrees of differentiation.

RESUMO

In the field of precision livestock farming, many systems have been developed to identify the position of each cow of the herd individually in a specific environment. Challenges still exist in assessing the adequacy of the available systems to monitor individual animals in specific environments, and in the design of new systems. The main purpose of this research was to evaluate the performance of the SEWIO ultrawide-band (UWB) real time location system for the identification and localisation of cows during their activity in the barn through preliminary analyses in laboratory conditions. The objectives included the quantification of the errors performed by the system in laboratory conditions, and the assessment of the suitability of the system for real time monitoring of cows in dairy barns. The position of static and dynamic points was monitored in different experimental set-ups in the laboratory by the use of six anchors. Then, the errors related to a specific movement of the points were computed and statistical analyses were carried out. In detail, the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied in order to assess the equality of the errors for each group of points in relation to their positions or typology, i.e., static or dynamic. In the post-hoc analysis, the errors were separated by Tukey's honestly significant difference at p > 0.05. The results of the research quantify the errors related to a specific movement (i.e., static and dynamic points) and the position of the points (i.e., central area, perimeter of the investigated area). Based on the results, specific information is provided for the installation of the SEWIO in dairy barns as well as the monitoring of the animal behaviour in the resting area and the feeding area of the breeding environment. The SEWIO system could be a valuable support for farmers in herd management and for researchers in the analysis of animal behavioural activities.

The Experiences in Close Relationships (ECR) questionnaire is a widely used self-report measure to assess adult attachment, based on two dimensions: attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance. This instrument has been adapted in multiple contexts, including the Chilean, for which there is an abbreviated version (ECR-12), that is the object of analysis in the present study. Although there is consensus that attachment security is best described in dimensional terms, there are areas, such as clinical practice, where having reference values could be useful. The aim of this study is to provide reference values for the interpretation of ECR-12 scores in the Chilean context. To do this, a sample of 6779 participants was evaluated using the ECR-12. The z-score normalization method was used to obtain the reference values. The analyzes carried out showed the need to build scales differentiated by age. Thus, for the group of 29 years or less, the cut-off point in the anxiety dimension is an average equal to or greater than 4.4 points, and for avoidance, the cut-off point is an average equal to or greater than 2.5. On the other hand, for the group aged 30 or older, the cut-off point in the anxiety dimension is an average equal to or greater than 4.2, and for avoidance, it is an average equal to or greater than 2.9. These findings can be relevant not only for identifying people who may present substantially high levels of anxiety and/or avoidance in attachment, but also as a complementary clinical tool in therapeutic contexts.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nebivolol and valsartan (VAL) in combination with each other successfully control blood pressure and improve hypertension patient outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate innovative, simple, and sustainable spectrophotometric methods for the simultaneous analysis of nebivolol and valsartan. METHOD: The new modified difference amplitude modulation (MD-AM) method uses only unified regression equation and does not require any resolution techniques. Other different approaches were also applied for the determination of the same mixture including univariate and multivariate spectrophotometric methods. The multivariate methods were PLS and PCR, whereas the univariate methods were derivative ratio (DD1), ratio difference (RD), constant center (CC), constant center spectrum subtraction (CC-SS), constant value coupled with amplitude difference (CV-AD), advanced concentration value (ACV), and amplitude difference (AD). The proposed methods use a green solvent; thus, the environmental impact of the presented procedures was evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively using six well-known evaluation tools. RESULTS: All methods were applied successfully for the analysis of the studied drugs in their bulk powder, pharmaceutical dosage form Byvalson®, and in vitro release at intestinal pH (7.4) using a USP dissolution tester. Results obtained were compared statistically with the reported method and with each other using a one-way ANOVA statistical test, and no significant differences were found. CONCLUSIONS: All green and white analytical chemistry evaluation tools results confirm the safety, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness of the approaches, indicating that the methods are regarded green and sustainable. Results were agreeable, encouraging their applicability in quality control laboratories for dosage form and making these methods an eco-friendly substitute for the analysis of this combined dosage form and for evaluating the dissolution profile. HIGHLIGHTS: For the first time, a severely overlapped spectrum was determined using a unified regression equation without the need of extended part or zero contribution regions by the novel method MD-AM. The proposed methods are the first study of in vitro dissolution profiling of nebivolol hydrochloride (NEB) and VAL and the first sustainable and green methods applied without compromising the analytical criteria.

RESUMO

Many problems in life sciences can be brought back to a comparison of graphs. Even though a multitude of such techniques exist, often, these assume prior knowledge about the partitioning or the number of clusters and fail to provide statistical significance of observed between-network heterogeneity. Addressing these issues, we developed an unsupervised workflow to identify groups of graphs from reliable network-based statistics. In particular, we first compute the similarity between networks via appropriate distance measures between graphs and use them in an unsupervised hierarchical algorithm to identify classes of similar networks. Then, to determine the optimal number of clusters, we recursively test for distances between two groups of networks. The test itself finds its inspiration in distance-wise ANOVA algorithms. Finally, we assess significance via the permutation of between-object distance matrices. Notably, the approach, which we will call netANOVA, is flexible since users can choose multiple options to adapt to specific contexts and network types. We demonstrate the benefits and pitfalls of our approach via extensive simulations and an application to two real-life datasets. NetANOVA achieved high performance in many simulation scenarios while controlling type I error. On non-synthetic data, comparison against state-of-the-art methods showed that netANOVA is often among the top performers. There are many application fields, including precision medicine, for which identifying disease subtypes via individual-level biological networks improves prevention programs, diagnosis and disease monitoring.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: The main goal of this research was to determine whether there is a statistically significant difference in the anthropometric characteristics of fourth grade elementary school students, who live in different demographic environments in Montenegro. The research was conducted on a sample of 120 students, fourth grade elementary school, male (60 students from urban areas and 60 students from rural areas). To measure anthropometric characteristics, 12 measures were applied (Body height, arm length, leg length, shoulder width, elbow diameter, knee diameter, body weight, upper arm circumference, lower leg circumference, skin fold of the back, skin fold of the upper arm, skin fold of the abdomen). After conducting research with the application of appropriate statistical procedures: descriptive analysis, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA), it was noticed that there is a statistically significant difference in the treated space of anthropometric characteristics. Boys from rural areas are more dominant than boys from urban areas in the longitudinal and transverse dimensionality of the skeleton and in volume on certain body segments, and boys from urban areas are more dominant than boys from rural areas in body weight and subcutaneous fat, which puts them at risk for obesity.

More than half of the CO2 emissions during the manufacturing of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) occur due to the calcination of calcium carbonate in addition to burning of fossil fuel to power the process. Consequently, there is a concerted effort to decrease the carbon footprint associated with this process, by minimizing the use of OPC. In line with this trend, an attempt was made in the reported study to synthesize a novel alkali-activated binder using CaCO3-rich waste limestone powder (WLSP) as a precursor. Utilizing the Taguchi method, four important parameters were varied at three levels to optimize the alkali-activated mixture. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the obtained results was performed to assess the impact of each of the factors on the properties of the developed binder. To enhance the strength further, OPC was added as a partial replacement of WLSP. The binder was characterized using scanning electron microscopy. The results have indicated that alkaline activator to binder ratio, Na2SiO3 to NaOH ratio, and sand to binder ratio of 0.575, 1.57, and 2.5, respectively, were the optimum to obtain satisfactory strength and workability with a 13.7-M NaOH activator solution. The incorporation of a small quantity of OPC in the mixture remarkably improved the density and strength of the alkali-activated-WLSP binder. Pirssonite (CaCO3.Na2CO3.2H2O) and C/N-A-S-H were the dominant mineral phases formed in the developed binder, particularly in the ones alkali-activated WLSP/OPC. In addition, the eco-efficiency assessment revealed that the WLSP is a promising low-carbon binder that can be used in developing more sustainable alkali-activated binder. The results have shown that the WLSP can be potentially utilized in developing binder that can be potentially used in the structural applications.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between intraoperative surgical performance scores and patient outcomes has not been demonstrated at a single-case level. The GEARS score is a Likert-based scale that quantifies robotic surgical proficiency in 5 domains. Given that even highly skilled surgeons can have variability in their skill among their cases, we hypothesized that at a patient level, higher surgical skill as determined by the GEARS score will predict individual patient outcomes. METHODS: Patients undergoing robotic sleeve gastrectomy between July 2018 and January 2021 at a single-health care system were captured in a prospective database. Bivariate Pearson's correlation was used to compare continuous variables, one-way ANOVA for categorical variables compared with a continuous variable, and chi-square for two categorical variables. Significant variables in the univariable screen were included in a multivariable linear regression model. Two-tailed p-value < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Of 162 patients included, 9 patients (5.5%) experienced a serious morbidity within 30 days. The average excess weight loss (EWL) was 72 ± 12% at 6 months and 74 ± 15% at 12 months. GEARS score was not significantly correlated with EWL at 6 months (p = 0.349), 12 months (p = 0.468), or serious morbidity (p = 0.848) on unadjusted analysis. After adjusting, total GEARS score was not correlated with serious morbidity (p = 0.914); however, GEARS score did predict EWL at 6 (p < 0.001) and 12 months (p < 0.001). All GEARS subcomponent scores, bimanual dexterity, depth perception, efficiency, force sensitivity, and robotic control were predictive of EWL at 6 months (p < 0.001) and 12 months (p < 0.001) on multivariable analysis. CONCLUSION: For patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy, surgical skill as assessed by the GEARS score was correlated with EWL, suggesting that better performance of a sleeve gastrectomy can result in improved postoperative weight loss.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the extraction socket (distal or lingual root) and the type of region of interest (ROI) definition (manual or predefined) on the assessment of alveolar repair following tooth extraction using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). The software package used for scanning, reconstruction, reorientation, and analysis of images (NRecon®, DataViewer®, CT-Analyzer®) was acquired through Bruker < https://www.bruker.com > . The sample comprised the micro-CT volumes of seven Wistar rat mandibles, in which the right first molar was extracted. The reconstructed images were analyzed using the extraction sockets, i.e., the distal and intermediate lingual root and the method of ROI definition: manual (MA), central round (CR), and peripheral round (PR). The bone volume fraction (BV/TV) values obtained were analyzed by two-way ANOVA with Tukey's post hoc test (α = 5%). The distal extraction socket resulted in significantly lower BV/TV values than the intermediate lingual socket for MA (P = 0.001), CR (P < 0.001), and PR (P < 0.001). Regarding the ROI, when evaluating the distal extraction socket, the BV/TV was significantly higher (P < 0.001) for MA than for CR and PR, with a lower BV/TV for CR. However, no significant difference was observed for MA (P = 0.855), CR (P = 0.769), or PR (P = 0.453) in the intermediate lingual extraction socket. The bone neoformation outcome (BV/TV) for alveolar bone repair after tooth extraction is significantly influenced by the ROI and the extraction socket. Using the predefined method with a standardized ROI in the central region of the distal extraction socket resulted in the assessment of bone volume, demonstrating the most critical region of the bone neoformation process.

RESUMO

Abstract Objectives: this study aimed to explore a set of factors associated with lower maternal-fetal attachment (MFA) in pregnant women. Methods: this is a cross-sectional study corresponding to the second wave of a cohort study with a population-based sample of pregnant women in the South of Brazil. The maternal-fetal attachment scale (MFAS) was used to measure MFA. Bivariate analysis was performed using the t-test and ANOVA. The variables that presented p<0.20 were taken for multivariate analysis, through linear regression, in order to control possible confounding factors. Results: a total of 840 pregnant women were included. Pregnant women who had lower MFA means were those who did not live with a partner (B=-3.8 [CI95%=-6.0; -1.7]), those between the first and second trimester of pregnancy (B=-4.3 [CI95%=-5.9; -2.6]), those who did not have support from their mother during pregnancy (B=-2.4 [CI95%=-4.6; -0.2]), and those with depressive symptoms (B=-4.9 [CI95%=-7.4; -2.5]). Conclusions: the results showed that a higher MFA it is associated with an adequate support network during pregnancy, better maternal mental health, and with an advanced pregnancy. Early evaluation of MFA and effort to promote an adequate prenatal bond, focusing on maternal psychological and emotional aspects are strongly suggested.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate and compare bite force (BF) in permanent first molars restored with glass ionomer cement (GIC), composite and amalgam, and normal contralateral permanent first molars. Material and Methods: BF was recorded in decayed permanent first molars, which were filled with GIC (n=30), composite (n=30), and amalgam (n=30), and in healthy contralateral first molars (n=90) with Force Transducer Occlusal Force Meter and compared. Results: BF was significantly higher in normal teeth on the contralateral side compared to teeth restored with GIC and composite. However, in patients with amalgam restoration, though it was less compared to that on the contralateral side, it was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: Restoring teeth with various filling materials may improve bite force. In the present study, it was found that the teeth restored with amalgam had higher bite forces in comparison to the other restorative materials used. However, it was not comparable to that observed in the normal tooth (control) on the contralateral side.
