The X-ray energy spectrum is crucial for image quality and dosage assessment in mammography, radiography, fluoroscopy, and CT which are frequently used for the diagnosis of many diseases including but not limited to patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. X-ray tubes have an electron filament (cathode), a tungsten/rubidium target (anode) oriented at an angle, and a metal filter (aluminum, beryllium, etc.) that may be placed in front of an exit window. When cathode electrons meet the anode, they generate X-rays with varied energies, creating a spectrum from zero to the electrons' greatest energy. In general, the energy spectrum of X-rays depends on the electron beam's energy (tube voltage), target angle, material, filter thickness, etc. Thus, each imaging system's X-ray energy spectrum is unique to its tubes. The primary goal of the current study is to develop a clever method for quickly estimating the X-ray energy spectrum for a variety of tube voltages, filter materials, and filter thickness using a small number of unique spectra. In this investigation, two distinct filters made of beryllium and aluminum with thicknesses of 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, 1.6, and 2 mm were employed to obtain certain limited X-ray spectra for tube voltages of 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 130, and 150 kV. The three inputs of 150 Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural networks were tube voltage, filter type, and filter thickness to forecast the X-ray spectra point by point. After training, the MLP neural networks could predict the X-ray spectra for tubes with voltages between 20 and 150 kV and two distinct filters made of aluminum and beryllium with thicknesses between 0 and 2 mm. The presented methodology can be used as a suitable, fast, accurate and reliable alternative method for predicting X-ray spectrum in medical applications. Although a technique was put out in this work for a particular system that was the subject of Monte Carlo simulations, it may be applied to any genuine system.

In digital subtraction angiography (digital subtraction total cerebral angiography), cardiac and macrovascular cardiography, anorectal radiology, fluoroscopy, and computed tomography (CT), a prior knowledge to X-ray energy spectrum is crucial for assessing the image quality and also calculating patient X-ray dosage. The present investigation's main objective is to propose an intelligent technique for faster calculating X-ray energy spectrum of medical imaging systems with different exposure settings of tube voltage, filter material, and thickness based on limited specific spectra. In this study, Monte Carlo N Particle (MCNP) simulation code was initially used to generate some limited X-ray spectra for tube voltages of 20, 30, 40, 50, 80, 100, 130, and 150 kV for two different filters of beryllium and aluminum with thicknesses of 0. 4, 0.8, 1.2, 1.6 and 2 mm. Tube voltage, type, and thickness of filter were used as the 3 inputs of 150 Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN) to forecast point by point of the X-ray spectrum. After training, the RBFNNs could forecast most of the X-ray spectra for tube voltages in the range of 20-150 kV and two various filters of aluminum and beryllium with thicknesses in the range of 0-2 mm.

Beryllium (Be) is a relatively rare element and occurs naturally in the Earth's crust, in coal, and in various minerals. Beryllium is used as an alloy with other metals in aerospace, electronics and mechanical industries. The major emission sources to the atmosphere are the combustion of coal and fossil fuels and the incineration of municipal solid waste. In soils and natural waters, the majority of Be is sorbed to soil particles and sediments. The majority of contamination occurs through atmospheric deposition of Be on aboveground plant parts. Beryllium and its compounds are toxic to humans and are grouped as carcinogens. The general public is exposed to Be through inhalation of air and the consumption of Be-contaminated food and drinking water. Immobilization of Be in soil and groundwater using organic and inorganic amendments reduces the bioavailability and mobility of Be, thereby limiting the transfer into the food chain. Mobilization of Be in soil using chelating agents facilitates their removal through soil washing and plant uptake. This review provides an overview of the current understanding of the sources, geochemistry, health hazards, remediation practices, and current regulatory mandates of Be contamination in complex environmental settings, including soil and aquatic ecosystems.

Knowledge of element concentrations in botanical extracts is relevant to assure consumer protection given the increased interest in plant-based ingredients. This study demonstrates successful multi-element investigations in order to address the lack of comprehensive profiling data for botanical extracts, while reporting for the first time the metallomic profile(s) of arnica, bush vetch, sweet cicely, yellow rattle, bogbean, rock-tea and tufted catchfly. Key element compositions were quantified using a validated HR-ICP-SFMS method (µg kg-1) and were found highly variable between the different plants: Lithium (18-3964); Beryllium (3-121); Molybdenum (75-4505); Cadmium (5-325); Tin (6-165); Barium (747-4646); Platinum (2-33); Mercury (5-30); Thallium (3-91); Lead (12-4248); Bismuth (2-30); Titanium (131-5827); Vanadium (15-1758); Chromium (100-4534); Cobalt (21-652); Nickel (230-6060) and Copper (1910-6340). Compendial permissible limits were not exceeded. Overall, no evidence of a health risk to consumers could be determined from consumption of the investigated plants at reasonable intake rates. Mathematical risk modelling (EDI, CDI, HQ, HI) estimated levels above safe oral thresholds only for Cd (16%) and Pb (8%) from higher intakes of the respective plant-derived material. Following high consumption of certain plants, 42% of the samples were categorised as potentially unsafe due to cumulative exposure to Cu, Cd, Hg and Pb. PCA suggested a potential influence of post-harvest processing on Cr, Ti and V levels in commercially-acquired plant material compared to wild-collected and farm-grown plants. Moreover, a strong correlation was observed between Pb-Bi, Be-V, Bi-Sn, and Tl-Mo occurrence. This study may support future research by providing both robust methodology and accompanying reference profile(s) suitable for the quality evaluation of essential elements and/or metal contaminants in botanical ingredients.

Dermal exposure to hazardous substances such as chemicals, toxics, metallic items and other contaminants may present substantial danger for health. Beryllium (Be) is a hazardous metal, especially when inhaled and/or in direct contact with the skin, associated with chronic beryllium disease (CBD) and Be sensitization (BeS). The objective of this study was to investigate the percutaneous penetration of beryllium and copper contained in metallic items as eyeglass temple tips (specifically BrushCAST® Copper Beryllium Casting Alloys containing Be 0.35 < 2.85%; Cu 95.3-98.7%), using Franz diffusion cells. This work demonstrated that the total skin absorption of Cu was higher (8.86%) compared to Be (4.89%), which was expected based on the high percentage of Cu contained in the eyeglass temple tips. However, Be accumulated significantly in the epidermis and dermis (up to 0.461 µg/cm2) and, to a lesser extent, in the stratum corneum (up to 0.130 µg/cm2) with a flux of permeation of 3.52 ± 4.5 µg/cm2/hour and lag time of 2.3 ± 1.3 h, after cutaneous exposure of temple tip into 1.0 mL artificial sweat for 24 h. Our study highlights the importance of avoiding the use of Be alloys in items following long-term skin contact.

ABSTRACT: A shielded neutron irradiation facility has been constructed to contain a 74 GBq plutonium-beryllium neutron source at the University of Utah. Due to lack of information and recent use, the GEANT4 Monte Carlo Toolkit was used to perform dose assessments and validation of the designed shield and beam port for storage and operational geometries where the source was to be placed. Borated polyethylene was used as the primary shielding material with a lead-lined beam port to collimate neutrons and reduce gamma rays within the active beam profile. The lead lining was found to reduce the gamma-to-neutron ratio within the profile to 0.259 ± 0.001 and maintain an average neutron flux of 4,633.7 ± 10.2 n cm-2 s-1. The measured dose rate of the source at 30 cm from its constructed storage configuration was found to be 22.3 ± 1.1 µSv h-1 and in good agreement with simulated values. This was also close to the target rate of 20 µSv h-1, the public limit for whole-body dose accumulation, imposed on the design. Measurements of the source during its retrieval and placement into the shield show good agreement with the simulated results and provide a strong validation for the future use of the source in experiments at the University of Utah.

Importance: Occupational exposure to carcinogens has been shown to pose a serious disease burden at the global, regional, and national levels. Based on epidemiologic studies and clinical observations, working environment appears to have important effects on the occurrence of human malignant tumors; however, to date, no systematic articles have been published that specifically investigated cancer burden due to occupational exposure in an individual and collective manner. Objective: To estimate the degree of exposure and evaluate the cancer burden attributable to occupational carcinogens (OCs) individually and collectively by sex, age, year, and location. Design, Setting, and Participants: Cross-sectional study including data on 195 countries from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study from January 1, 1990, to December 31, 2017. Data were analyzed from June 24, 2020, to July 20, 2020. Exposures: Thirteen OCs (ie, arsenic, asbestos, benzene, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, diesel engine exhaust, formaldehyde, nickel, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, silica, sulfuric acid, and trichloroethylene). Main Outcomes and Measures: The degree and change patterns of exposure as well as the attributable cancer burden, including deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), by sex, age, year, and location for 13 OCs. The calculation of the population-attributable fraction was based on past exposure in the population and relative risks. Results: Based on the GBD 2017 study, 13 OCs attributable to 7 cancer types were included. Most summary exposure values for the 13 OCs, particularly those of diesel engine exhaust (35.6% increase; 95% uncertainty interval [UI], 32.4%-38.5%) and trichloroethylene (30.3% increase; 95% UI, 27.3%-33.5%), increased from 1990 to 2017. Only exposure to asbestos decreased by 13.8% (95% UI, -26.7% to 2.2%). In 2017, 319 000 (95% UI, 256 000-382 000) cancer deaths and 6.42 million (95% UI, 5.15 million to 7.76 million) DALYs were associated with OCs combined, accounting for 61.0% (95% UI, 59.6%-62.4%) of the total cancer deaths and 48.3% (46.3% to 50.2%) of the DALYs. Among the 13 OCs, the 3 leading risk factors for cancer burden were asbestos (71.8%), silica (15.4%), and diesel engine exhaust (5.6%). For most OCs, the attributed cancer outcome was tracheal, bronchial, and lung cancer, which accounted for 89.0% of attributable cancer deaths. China (61 644 cancer deaths), the US (42 848), and Japan (20 748) accounted for the largest number of attributable cancer deaths in 2017; for DALYs, China (1.47 million), the US (0.71 million), and India (0.37 million) were the 3 leading countries. Conclusions and Relevance: Results of this study suggest that although OC exposure levels have decreased, the overall cancer burden is continuously increasing.

In Chile, erosion processes (on-site and off-site impact) affect at least 36.9 million ha-1, representing 49% of the total land area. Different regions show severe soil degradation mainly caused by water erosion processes. The importance of sediment-associated transport and the key role of soil erosion affect the fertility of the land and the contamination of water bodies. The aim of this work was to estimate the erosion rate, caused by the rainfall in Apalta vineyards in the Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins Region of Chile using isotope techniques, assessing the 7Be runoff during four years (2009-2012). The 7Be distribution mass depth at a reference site ranged from 7 to 24 kg m-2 in the first two centimetres soil layer. Even when the vineyards have been well managed, the topographic characteristics and the climatic conditions facilitated soil erosion, with average rates of 50.4, 23.5, 50.6 and 67.3 tons ha-1 y-1 in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, respectively. The robustness of the 7Be technique demonstrated the advantage of a non-soil-destructive methodology to calculate soil distribution and erosion rates.

RESUMO

Preliminary studies for the design of an accelerator-based BNCT clinical facility are presented. The Beam Shaping Assembly neutron activation was evaluated experimentally and with Monte Carlo simulations. The activations of patient, air and walls in the room, the absorbed doses by the patient and the in-air dose distributions were evaluated. Based on these calculations, different walls compositions were tested to optimize the environmental conditions. Borated concrete, advantageously reducing the thermal flux in the room, was proven the best choice.

RESUMO

The 9Be(γ,n) neutrons with the energies at 21-24 keV generated by 1.691 MeV photons from 124Sb was investigated as a source of epithermal neutrons for BNCT, using PHITS code. A beam shaping assembly composed of 13 mm thick Be target, a gamma ray shield made of 30 cm thick Bi, and a reflector of 30 cm thick Pb satisfied the beam requirements of IAEA-TECDOC-1223. The needed 124Sb activity was estimated in the order of 1016-1017 Bq. Feasibility of BNCT using 124Sb-Be neutrons would be influenced by the capability of periodic supply of short-lived 124Sb (half-life: 60 days) with such high activity.

Identifying and monitoring dietary toxicants is an important component of contemporary food safety systems. To characterise their potential dietary risks, analysis was undertaken of 10 elements: antimony, barium, beryllium, boron, bromine, lithium, nickel, strontium, thallium and uranium in 132 different food types. All 10 elements were reported as quantified in aportion of the analysed foods, with prevalence ranging from less than 1% for antimony to 98% for barium. Dietary exposure assessment was undertaken for 10 New Zealand population cohorts using apublished simulated diet, and proportionality of food groups to total exposure identified. Characterisation against health-based guidance values identified no dietary risk from exposures to beryllium, boron, bromine, lithium, strontium and uranium to any of the population cohorts. For antimony and thallium, the exposure range for infants was calculated to exceed the health-based guidance value, and for barium and nickel, all mean exposures were above the health-based guidance value for younger population cohorts. Although some conservatism in applying upper-bound mean exposures reduces the likelihood of asignificant dietary risk, further laboratory method development and analysis of these elements in the New Zealand diet would be beneficial to ensure protection of New Zealand public health.

Determination of neutron dose can be challenging and requires knowledge of neutron flux as a function of energy. The goal of this project was to characterize the thermal neutron flux of a 37 GBq PuBe alpha-neutron source and model the associated neutron dose using version MCNPX of the Monte-Carlo N-Particle transport codes. The PuBe source was placed in a neutron howitzer, and foil activation (dysprosium foils with and without cadmium covers) was used at various distances to determine thermal neutron flux, which was then used to verify the MCNPX model representing the system. The model was then adapted for dosimetric modeling to enable future neutron dose-response studies.

Detection of radionuclides in surface air allows researchers to gain further insight on the behavior of radionuclides that may affect human radiation exposure especially in the event of a nuclear emergency. In this study, activity concentrations of naturally-occurring radionuclides Beryllium-7 (7Be) and Lead-212 (212Pb) in surface air and meteorological data collected in Tanay, Philippines from January 2012 to December 2017 were evaluated to determine the impact of atmospheric conditions and processes to airborne radioactivity. Surface air concentrations of 7Be and 212Pb were found to range from 0.00779 ±â€¯0.00188 to 11.2 ±â€¯0.116 mBq/m3 and from 1.371 ±â€¯0.036 to 106.6 ±â€¯1.075 mBq/m3, respectively. 7Be and 212Pb show distinct annual trends, suggesting that atmospheric conditions affect both radionuclides differently and independently. 7Be shows two peak concentrations annually, with the first peak occurring between January to April and the second lower peak occurring between October and November. 212Pb, on the other hand, shows annual peak concentrations occurring between April and June. Ambient temperature showed strong positive correlation with 212Pb concentration in surface air and a weak negative correlation with 7Be; relative humidity and precipitation showed varying degrees of negative correlation with radionuclide concentrations in surface air. Source locations for the unusually high 212Pb activity concentrations detected on 11-13 May 2013 and 19-31 May 2015 determined using WEB-GRAPE and HYSPLIT atmospheric transport models are presented as a case study. The data and findings of this study shall serve as basis for further studies on local and regional atmospheric transport and radiological impact assessment for the implementation of an effective nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response system in the country.

The objective of this study is to determine the energy response factors for BeO optically simulated dosemeter (OSLD) using general cavity theory and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. A virtual phantom is constructed in EGSnrc MC program and energy response of BeO OSLDs were simulated at 5 cm depth for x-ray beams ranging from 1.25 to 25 MV and at 2 cm for beams with <250 kV including ISO 4037 narrow beam energies in a virtual water phantom. The energy response factor for a given radiation quality relative to 60Co was determined for BeO and compared to the Al2O3:C and LiF:Mg,Ti dosemeters. Burlin cavity theory calculations were done using mean photon energy (MPE) of the beam spectra, while EGSnrc software package was used to carry out MC simulation of full spectra. The cavity theory and MC methods agreed well within the 0.7%. Energy response of x-ray beams at MV range showed a maximum of 1.5% under-response. At energies higher than 150 kV (105 keV MPE) showed no significant difference while a significant under-response were observed at 100 kV (53 keV MPE) and 50 kV (29 keV MPE), ~8 and ~12%, respectively. BeO, Al2O3:C and LiF:Mg,Ti dosemeters exhibited very similar energy response at higher energies mainly in the MeV range. At 50 kV (29 keV MPE), however, BeO dosemeter under responded by a factor of 0.878, while Al2O3:C and LiF:Mg,Ti dosemeters over responded by a factor of 3.2 and 1.44, respectively. Furthermore, at low energies, BeO energy response showed dependence on photon spectra. For instance, at 100 kV, the difference was ~8, ~6 and 2% for 53, 60 and 83 keV MPE (ISO 4037N-100), respectively. Furthermore, calibration with 137Cs instead of 60Co resulted up to 1.8% differences in energy response. Both energy spectrum and calibration methods make considerable differences in energy response of OSLDs. This study concludes that BeO chips are nearly energy independent at energies higher than 100 keV MPE, while Al2O3:C dosemeters show an extremely enhanced energy-response ranging between 1.44 and 3.2 at energies between 170 and 29 keV MPE mainly due to dominance of photoelectric effect.

In most conventional radiation therapy treatments, special attention is payed for neutron contamination when working with energy beams above 8 MeV and generally it is only considered for shielding requirements, not for dose study in patients or employees. The present work is focused on studying the unwanted generated photoneutrons in a Medical Linear Accelerator (LinAc) Varian TrueBeam using a 6 MeV radiation treatment beam. To that, Monte Carlo (MC) simulation code MCNP6.1.1 was used. This version of the code allows the use of unstructured mesh geometries as a novelty, offering more reliable results and higher speed computation. The particularity of the studied LinAc is the presence of a beryllium filter at the treatment head. Since Beryllium causes photonuclear reactions (γ, n) at energies much lower than other LinAc composing materials, this work aims to analyze if this type of units, when using low energy treatment beams (6 MeV), produce neutron pollution and to ensure that this unwanted radiation can be considered negligible.

The objective of the present study was to assess the level of aluminium and toxic metals in hair of workers occupationally exposed to aluminium. 124 employees of the aluminium plant working in the hydrometallurgical (n = 43) and sintering units (n = 41), as well as 40 occupationally nonexposed controls were examined. Hair aluminium (Al), arsenic (As), beryllium (Be), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and tin (Sn) content was assessed using inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The obtained data demonstrate that aluminium plant workers had significantly higher levels of hair Al (28.8 (15.4-58.6) vs 7.8 (4.3-14.2) µg/g, p < 0.001), Cd (0.053 (0.032 - 0.095) vs 0.025 (0.014 - 0.043) µg/g, p < 0.001) and Pb (0.672 (0.299-1.310) vs 0.322 (0.170 - 0.609) µg/g, p = 0.012) than the controls, respectively. Further analysis demonstrated that persons involved in different technological processes were characterized by distinct hair metal profiles. Hair Al, Be, Cd, Ni, Pb, and Sn levels in men working in the sintering unit of the aluminium plant exceeded the respective control values. In turn, workers of the hydrometallurgical unit were characterized by more than 2-fold higher levels of Al and Cd in hair as compared to the controls. The results of the present study demonstrate that workers of the aluminium plant are characterized by increased risk of Al as well as As, Cd, Pb, and Sn exposure.

RESUMO

A long counter detector was manufactured by the Institute of Advanced Studies (IEAV) and was characterised in the neutron low scattering room at Brazilian National Ionising Radiation Metrology Laboratory (LNMRI/IRD) to deploy a secondary Standard for neutron fluence. The effective centre was measured experimentally with 252Cf+D2O, 252Cf, 241AmBe and 238PuBe neutron sources, having average energies from 0.55 to 4.16 MeV. The experimental arrangement and detector construction were carefully reproduced in Monte Carlo simulations, and the computational results were found to be in good agreement with those from experiment.

RESUMO

Occupational neutron fields usually have energies from the thermal range to some MeV and the characterization of the spectra is essential for estimation of the radioprotection quantities. Thus, the spectrum must be unfolded based on a limited number of measurements. This study implemented an algorithm based on the bee colonies behavior, named Artificial Bee Colony (ABC), where the intelligent behavior of the bees in search of food is reproduced to perform the unfolding of neutron spectra. The experimental measurements used Bonner spheres and 6LiI (Eu) detector, with irradiations using a thermal neutron flux and three reference fields: 241Am-Be, 252Cf and 252Cf (D2O). The ABC obtained good estimation of the expected spectrum even without previous information and its results were closer to expected spectra than those obtained by the SPUNIT algorithm.

This study describes the use of a neutron irradiator system based on a plutonium-beryllium neutron source for MnSO4 solution activation for use to determine the MSB system efficiency. Computational simulations using Monte Carlo code were performed to establish the main characteristics of the irradiator system. Among the simulated geometries and volumes, semi-cylindrical shape with 84.5 cm3 of MnSO4 solution yielded the best option to be built. Activity measurements were performed with a high-pure germanium detector to validate the new irradiation system. Results showed an average efficiency and uncertainty of the experimental standard deviation of the mean: 5.742 × 10-4 ± 0.036 × 10-4 (coverage factor k = 1), for MSB system. Efficiency value obtained shows good correlation to other published methods (i.e. a relative difference of 0.07%). This alternative metrological method demonstrated the utility of neutron sources for the irradiation of solutions in metrology laboratories providing a cost-efficient alternative to nuclear reactors or particle accelerators.

The standard thermal neutron flux unit, TNF2, in the Brazilian National Ionizing Radiation Metrology Laboratory was rebuilt. Fluence is still achieved by moderating of four 241Am-Be sources with 0.6 TBq each. The facility was again simulated and redesigned with graphite core and paraffin added graphite blocks surrounding it. Simulations using the MCNPX code on different geometric arrangements of moderator materials and neutron sources were performed. The resulting neutron fluence quality in terms of intensity, spectrum and cadmium ratio was evaluated. After this step, the system was assembled based on the results obtained from the simulations and measurements were performed with equipment existing in LNMRI/IRD and by simulated equipment. This work focuses on the characterization of a central chamber point and external points around the TNF2 in terms of neutron spectrum, fluence and ambient dose equivalent, H*(10). This system was validated with spectra measurements, fluence and H*(10) to ensure traceability.
