To understand the spatial distribution characteristics and potential ecological risk of heavy metals in soil of Baiyangdian Lake, 55 soil samples were collected and the contents of eight heavy metals (Mn, Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, and Ni) were detected. The spatial variation structure and distribution pattern were analyzed using geostatistical methods (Moran index and semi-variance model). The degree of heavy metal pollution and its risk were assessed using the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and potential ecological risk index (Eri and RI). The results showed that the average of ω(Mn), ω(Cr), ω(Cu), ω(Zn), ω(As), ω(Cd), ω(Pb), and ω(Ni) were 467.75, 43.59, 28.57, 89.04, 12.32, 0.18, 19.26, and 30.56 mg·kg-1, respectively, all of which were lower than the screening values of soil pollution risk in agricultural land. However, the contents of Cu, Zn, and Cd were significantly higher than their background values, with two highly variable elements of Cu (48.65%) and Cd (37.52%). The Moran index indicated that Mn, Cu, Cd, and Pb showed weak spatial autocorrelation. Nugget coefficients of both of Cd and Pb shown by the semi-variance model were 100%, suggesting random variation as a main spatial variation driven by anthropogenic factors. High values of soil heavy metals were mainly distributed in the southwest of Baiyangdian Lake with a significant correlation between the heavy metals. The Igeo of soil heavy metals from high to low was Cd>Cu>Zn>Ni>As>Pb>Mn>Cr. Cd pollution was the most common, in which 67.27% of the samples were lightly polluted. Ecological risk assessment revealed that the average Eri of Cd was 58.81, belonging to the middle ecological risk level, and the rest were at light ecological risk. As a whole, the RI of soil heavy metal pollution in Baiyangdian Lake was at a light ecological risk level (87.81), with the highest contribution rate of Cd to RI (66.39%). Thus, it is necessary to strengthen the control of soil heavy metal Cd pollution in Baiyangdian Lake in the future.

Probabilistic exposure and risk assessment of chemical hazards in the diet have increasingly gained ground in recent years as a pragmatic approach for the approximation of reality. This work presents the outcomes of a project which aimed at applying probabilistic techniques for basic modelling of chronic dietary exposure to food contaminants following EFSA guidance. These techniques, based on Monte Carlo Risk Assessment (MCRA) software and on the programming language R, were employed for the risk assessment of cadmium for Austrian adults, enabling the validation and the critical comparison of the two approaches. Harmonisation and optimisation of procedures, refinement of exposure assessment skills and confidence in the results were the main benefits. Data amount and validity were identified as critical parameters, influencing the precision of the results. Cadmium was selected as a case study due to its toxicological properties, its ubiquitous presence in food and the availability of Austrian occurrence data. Similar exposure and risk estimates were generated through MCRA and R in alternative optimistic and pessimistic exposure scenarios, suggesting low levels of concern, except for vegetarians, whose upper tail exposures are close to the established Tolerable Weekly Intake. However, as occurrence data gaps have been identified as the major element of uncertainty, the estimated exposure and risk levels are characterised as underestimated. Grains and grain-based products, potatoes and leafy vegetables are the main contributors to the intake. The results will contribute to risk management and to a future refinement of the assessment.

Oil exploration's devastation on health and the environment may far outweigh its economic benefits. An oil spill occurred at Egbokodo River in Delta State, Nigeria, thereby polluting the land and water bodies. The study was therefore aimed at evaluating the impacts of iron, lead, cadmium, and chromium on the zooplankton community structure of Egbokodo River and the potential health risks. Zooplankton and surface water samples were collected to investigate the concentrations of trace metals and zooplankton abundance. The associated carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects of the metals in the water were analyzed. Trace metal concentrations in the surface water were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy (Philips model PU 9100) and zooplankton samples were collected using a hydrobios plankton net (mesh size 25 µm). Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and oil and grease (OG) were determined using Agilent 7890B gas chromatography coupled to flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and volumetric analysis respectively. The trend of the abundance of zooplanktons cross the river was 18 individuals (Station A) < 100 individuals (Station B) < 155 individuals (Station C). Cyclopoida proved to be the most resilient to the impacts of the oil spill. On a taxa basis, the order of abundance among Calanoida, Cyclopoida, Cladoceran, and Harpacticoida was Station C > Station B > Station A, except in Amphipoda where Station B > Station C > Station A was observed. Iron and lead posed significant carcinogenic risks that are liable to be inflicted by the ingestion of the water. The cumulative non-carcinogenic health risk in the male was the only significant (> 1) among the age groups. Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), oil and grease (OG), iron, and lead had notable impacts on the general abundance of zooplankton in the aquatic habitat. The dominance of the Cyclopoida in the river buttressed the impact of the oil spill which warrants a prompt remediation measure. The pollution had notable ecological impacts on the zooplankton community structure of the aquatic habitat. The adults in the nearby human populations are liable to elicit carcinogenic health challenges associated with lead and iron ingestion. The males are at risk of non-carcinogenic illnesses which are associated with the combined toxicity effects of all the metals. The study suggests that the pollution in Egbokodo River was validated by the dominance of the Cyclopoida in the aquatic habitat. The study confers bioindicator reputation on the Cyclopoida for future biomonitoring studies.

BACKGROUND: Excess cadmium (Cd) intake poses a general risk to health and to the kidneys in particular. Among indices of renal dysfunction under Cd burden measures are the urinary N-acetyl-ß-D-glucosidase (UNAG) and urinary ß2-microglobulin (Uß2-MG) enzymes. However, the end-pointed values and the Cd burden threshold remain controversial because the scopes fluctuate widely. METHODS: To ascertain the clinical benchmark dose of urinary Cd (UCd) burden for renal dysfunction, 1595 residents near a Cd site were surveyed. Urine was sampled and assayed. A benchmark dose low (BMDL) was obtained by fitting UCd levels and index levels. RESULTS: We found that over 50% of the subjects were suffering from Cd exposure as their UCd levels far exceeded the national standard threshold of 5.000 µg/g creatinine (cr). Further analysis indicated that Uß2-MG was more sensitive than UNAG for renal dysfunction. The BMDL for UCd was estimated as 3.486 U/g cr (male, where U is unit of enzyme) and 2.998 U/g cr (female) for UNAG. The BMDL for Uß2-MG, which is released into urine from glomerulus after Cd exposure, was found to be 2.506 µg/g cr (male, where µg is the unit of microglobulin) and 2.236 µg/g cr (female). CONCLUSIONS: Uß2-MG is recommended as the sensitivity index for renal dysfunction, with 2.2 µg/g cr as the threshold for clinical diagnosis. Our findings suggest that Uß2-MG is the better biomarker for exposure to Cd.

Introduction. Metal exposure is an important factor for inducing antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Dandelion extracts have been used for centuries in traditional Chinese and Native American medicine.Aim. We assessed the effects of dandelion water extracts and taraxasterol on heavy metal-induced antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli as well as the underlying mechanisms.Methodology. Dandelion extracts were obtained through 4 h of boiling in distilled water. Bacterial growth was monitored with a spectrophotometer. Biochemical assays were performed to assess the activities and gene transcriptions of ß-lactamase and acetyltransferase. Oxidative stress was determined using an oxidation-sensitive probe, H2DCFDA.Results. The present study demonstrated that higher concentrations of nickel (>5 µg ml-1), cadmium (>0.1 µg ml-1), arsenic (>0.1 µg ml-1) and copper (>5 µg ml-1) significantly inhibited the growth of E. coli. Lower concentrations of nickel (0.5 µg ml-1), cadmium (0.05 µg ml-1) and arsenic (0.05 µg ml-1) had no effect on bacterial growth, but helped the bacteria become resistant to two antibiotics, kanamycin and ampicillin. The addition of dandelion root extracts and taraxasterol significantly reversed the antibiotic resistance induced by these heavy metals. The supplements of antibiotics and cadmium generated synergistic effects on the activities of ß-lactamase and acetyltransferase (two antibiotic resistance-related proteins), which were significantly blocked by either dandelion root extract or taraxasterol. In contrast, oxidative stress was not involved in the preventative roles of dandelion root extracts and taraxasterol in heavy metal-induced antibiotic resistance.Conclusion. This study suggests that heavy metals induce bacterial antibiotic resistance and dandelion root extracts and taraxasterol could be used to help reverse bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

Background: Air pollution in Kazakhstan is caused by many factors and poses serious threats to public health. Ambient air in the cities of Kazakhstan is polluted due to mining and processing of mineral resources, oil and gas production, gasoline and diesel fuel motor vehicles, industrial enterprises. Objective: The study aim is to assess the air pollution degree in most significant settlements of Kazakhstan and define risk levels for the population health. Ambient air monitoring was conducted in 26 cities. Air pollution severity was assessed by the analysis results and processing of air samples taken at the stationary observation posts. Health risk assessment due to chemical factors was calculated according to the approved risk assessment methodology. Findings: There is high risk of acute adverse effects risk from suspended particles, oxides and dioxides of nitrogen and sulfur in almost all of the studied cities. The most unfavorable situation is in Ust-Kamenogorsk. Also, there is the adverse chronic effects risk caused by suspended particles exposure in majority of the studied cities. Extremely high chronic effects risk as a result of heavy metals exposure was detected in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Shymkent, Almaty, Taraz and Balkhash. Unacceptable carcinogenic risk levels have been determined for professional groups and the whole population with respect to cadmium in Shymkent, Almaty, Balkhash; arsenic in Shymkent, Almaty, Balkhash; lead in Taraz; chromium - in Shymkent, Aktobe, Almaty and Balkhash. Thus, the values of the hazard quotients and indices for acute and chronic exposure in most of the studied cities of Kazakhstan exceed the permissible level equal to 1.0. Conclusion: Due to the unacceptable risk levels in the cities it is strongly recommended to conduct a detailed study of the health status of the population depending on the air pollution.

Cadmium (Cd) and high dietary intake of molybdenum (Mo) can lead to adverse reactions on animals, but the combined impacts of Mo and Cd on testicle are not clear. To investigate the co-induced toxic effects of Mo and Cd in duck testicles on the mRNA levels of heat shock proteins (HSPs), inflammatory cytokines, and apoptosis. A total of sixty 11-day-old male Shaoxing ducks (Anas platyrhyncha) were randomly divided into 6 groups and testicles were collected on day 120. The mRNA levels of HSPs (HSP60, HSP70, HSP90), inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, NF-κB, COX-2), and apoptosis genes (Bcl-2, Bak-1, Caspase-3) were determined by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), meanwhile the changes of ultrastructural were evaluated. The results showed HSPs mRNA levels were increased in high Mo and Cd groups, however, they were decreased in high dose Mo and Cd co-treated group. In all treatment groups, the mRNA levels of Bak-1 and Caspase-3 were upregulated, and Bcl-2 mRNA level was downregulated, especially in combination groups. The TNF-α, NF-κB, and COX-2 expression in co-exposure groups were higher than those in single groups. Furthermore, the ultrastructural changes showed nuclear deformation, mitochondria hyperplasia and cristaes rupture, and vacuolation in combination groups. Changes of all above factors indicated a possible synergistic relationship between the two elements, and the high expression of HSPs and inflammatory cytokines may play a role in the resistance of testicles toxicity induced by Mo or Cd or both.

The bioavailability and human health risks of As, Pb, Ni, Co, Cr and Cd in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at an urban site on a National highway in Agra, India were investigated. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer was used for metal analysis in sequentially extracted samples to ascertain the highly mobile, reducible, bioavailable and immobile fractions of the metals. Cancer risk resulting from inhalation, dermal and ingestion exposure to each metal in these fractions was calculated according to US EPA models. The average mass concentration of PM2.5 was 87.16 ± 62.51 µg/m3. Cr, Ni and Pb were the most abundant metals. The results showed that Pb and Cr were higher in the mobile fraction. Cd and Co had high bioavailability. Ingestion is the major exposure pathway for all heavy metals except Cr to infants, children and adults followed by inhalation and dermal contact. The cumulative risk for Cr(VI) due to dermal and inhalation routes exceed the maximum acceptable limit for children of age 1-7 years, 8-15 years and adults when total concentration is considered, but the estimated risks are within the acceptable limit when the bioavailable, water soluble and mobile fraction are taken into account. Hence the study shows that children and adults living in the vicinity of this site are more susceptible, hence more attention should be paid to protect them from pollution hazards. The study indicates the importance of metal speciation in assessing associated human health risks.

This paper investigated the concentration of Cd in foods via surveys and a literature review. The concentration of Cd in different food groups was in the decreasing order of meat > aquatic products > cereal > vegetable > bean > egg > dairy > fruit. More precisely, on average the weekly Cd intake for men, women, 2-3-year-old children and 4-17-year-old children were 0.0039, 0.0041, 0.0069 and 0.0064mgkg-1 bw week-1, respectively. Among all food groups, cereal was the most significant contributor to the dietary intake of Cd, followed by vegetable, aquatic products and meat. For Chinese consumers, the results of risk assessment for all groups by the deterministic method and the probabilistic method showed the mean weekly Cd intake via dietary exposure was lower than the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) proposed by WHO. However, the 95th and 97.5th percentile THQ values all exceeded 1, and the probability of dietary Cd exposure greater than the weekly intake tolerance (THQ >1) were 15.9%, 17.1%, 42.3% and 28.4% for men, women, 2-3-year-old children and 4-17-year-old children, indicating a potential risk from Cd exposure via dietary intake, especially for children. It appeared that dietary Cd exposure should deserve our attention, and positive measures must be taken to reduce the concentration of Cd in food at once.

The composition of the surface layer of 13 low-cost jewelry samples with a high Cd content was analyzed using an energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (ED XRF). The analyzed jewels were obtained in cooperation with the Czech Environmental Inspectorate. The jewels were leached in two types of artificial sweat (acidic and alkaline) for 7 days. Twenty microliters of the resulting solution was subsequently placed on a paper carrier and analyzed by an LIBS (Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectrometry) spectrometer after drying. The Cd content in the jewelry surface layer detected by using ED XRF ranged from 13.4% to 44.6% (weight per weight-w/w). The samples were subsequently leached in artificial alkaline, and the acidic sweat and leachates were analyzed using laser-induced breakdown spectrometry (LIBS). The amount of released Cd into alkaline sweat ranged from 24.0 to 370 µg Cd per week, respectively 3.23-61.7 µg/cm²/week. The amount of released Cd into acidic sweat ranged from 16.4 to 1517 µg Cd per week, respectively 3.53-253 µg/cm²/week. The limit of Cd for dermal exposure is not unequivocally determined in the countries of the EU (European Union) or in the U.S. Based on the US EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) approach used to establish the reference dose (RfD) for Cd contained in food and information about the bioavailability of Cd after dermal exposure, we assessed our own value of dermal RfD. The value was compared with the theoretical amount of Cd, which can be absorbed into the organism from jewelry in contact with the skin. The calculation was based on the amount of Cd that was released into acidic and alkaline sweat. The highest amount of Cd was released into acidic sweat, which represents 0.1% of dermal RfD and into alkaline sweat, 0.5% of dermal RfD. These results indicate that the analyzed jewelry contains Cd over the limit for composition of jewelry available within the territory of the EU. The determined amount of Cd in analyzed jewelry does not, however, pose a threat in terms of carcinogenic toxic effects.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal. This study was aimed to estimate the potential health risks in a Cd-polluted district in China, and examine the relationship between urinary cadmium(UCd) and hypertension and impaired kidney function at low exposure levels (UCd: GM 1.3 µg/g creatinine). Blood pressure measurement, questionnaires, and collection of urinary samples were conducted from 217 residents. Environmental samples, food, and cigarette samples were collected and detected to estimate the risks posed by Cd and the contribution of inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact pathways to these risks. A logistic regression model was used in examining associations between exposure and hypertension and impaired kidney function. Results show that this population is at high risk. For non-smokers, incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) and hazard quotient (HQ) are 1.74E-04 and 2.96, and for smokers, they are 1.07E-03 and 52.5, respectively. Among all exposure pathways, smoking and foods cause the major increases in ILCR and HQ. UCd is significantly associated with hypertension (odds ratio (OR) = 1.468; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.104, 1.953; P = 0.008) and impaired kidney function (OR = 1.902, 95% CI: 1.054, 3.432; P = 0.033). The results demonstrate that Cd can potentially lead to adverse health effects.

RESUMO

Tobacco is one of the cadmium accumulation and tolerance plants. Decreasing cadmium content of tobacco contributes to environmental safety and human health. Three aspects on tobacco cadmium research were reviewed in this paper, i.e. uptake and distribution of cadmium in tobacco, and health risk assessment of cadmium in tobacco and reduction measures. The current situations and existing challenges in the research field were discussed. The cadmium tolerance mechanisms of tobacco were reviewed, the factors on cadmium uptake were analyzed, and the general distribution of cadmium in tobacco was summarized. From the point of health risk assessment, the lack of cadmium limits in tobacco was identified, the recommended formula to calculate cadmium limits of tobacco based on atmosphere cadmium limits and digestion cadmium limits was provided and the cadmium limits of tobacco were estimated using each formula, and suggestions on cadmium limits in tobacco were presented. At last, we put forward several effective reduction measures to lower cadmium level in tobacco leaves.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) status among preschool-aged children in Guiyu, an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling town in Guangdong, China. METHODS: Two hundred and forty-three parents were surveyed regarding ADHD behaviors in their children (aged 3-7 years) based solely on the DSM-IV criteria. The peripheral blood samples were taken from these children to measure blood lead levels (BLLs) and blood cadmium levels (BCLs). RESULTS: 12.8% of children met the criteria for ADHD, of which the inattentive, hyperactive/impulsive and combined subtypes were 4.5%, 5.3% and 2.9% respectively. Of all children, 28.0% had BLLs ≥ 10 ug/dL and only 1.2% had BCLs ≥ 2 ug/L, levels conventionally considered high. Either modeled by univariate or multivariable analysis, the three ADHD scores (inattentive, hyperactive/impulsive and total scores) calculated from the Parent Rating Scale showed strong positive correlations with BLLs but not with BCLs. Furthermore, children with high BLLs had 2.4 times higher risk of ADHD than those with low BLLs (OR: 2.4 [95% CI: 1.1-5.2]). When each of the 18 categories on the Parent Rating Scale was separately analyzed, children with high BLLs had significant higher risks for positive ADHD symptoms than those with low BLLs in 12 of the 18 categories (ORs ranged from 2.1 [95% CI: 1.1-3.9] to 3.6 [95% CI: 1.7-7.5]). CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that environmental lead contamination due to e-waste recycling has an impact on neurobehavioral development of preschool children in Guiyu.

Cadmium and lead are ubiquitous environmental contaminants that might increase risks of cardiovascular disease and other aging-related diseases, but their relationships with leukocyte telomere length (LTL), a marker of cellular aging, are poorly understood. In experimental studies, they have been shown to induce telomere shortening, but no epidemiologic study to date has examined their associations with LTL in the general population. We examined associations of blood lead and cadmium (n = 6,796) and urine cadmium (n = 2,093) levels with LTL among a nationally representative sample of US adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2002). The study population geometric mean concentrations were 1.67 µg/dL (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.63, 1.70) for blood lead, 0.44 µg/L (95% CI: 0.42, 0.47) for blood cadmium, and 0.28 µg/L (95% CI: 0.27, 0.30) for urine cadmium. After adjustment for potential confounders, the highest (versus lowest) quartiles of blood and urine cadmium were associated with -5.54% (95% CI: -8.70, -2.37) and -4.50% (95% CI: -8.79, -0.20) shorter LTLs, respectively, with evidence of dose-response relationship (P for trend < 0.05). There was no association between blood lead concentration and LTL. These findings provide further evidence of physiological impacts of cadmium at environmental levels and might provide insight into biological pathways underlying cadmium toxicity and chronic disease risks.

Vacuum metallurgy separation (VMS) is a technically feasible method to recover Pb, Cd and other heavy metals from crushed e-wastes. To further determine the environmental impacts and safety of this method, heavy metals exposure, noise and thermal safety in the ambiance of a vacuum metallurgy separation system are evaluated in this article. The mass concentrations of total suspended particulate (TSP) and PM10 are 0.1503 and 0.0973 mg m(-3) near the facilities. The concentrations of Pb, Cd and Sn in TSP samples are 0.0104, 0.1283 and 0.0961 µg m(-3), respectively. Health risk assessments show that the hazard index of Pb is 3.25 × 10(-1) and that of Cd is 1.09 × 10(-1). Carcinogenic risk of Cd through inhalation is 1.08 × 10(-5). The values of the hazard index and risk indicate that Pb and Cd will not cause non-cancerous effects or carcinogenic risk on workers. The noise sources are mainly the mechanical vacuum pump and the water cooling pump. Both of them have the noise levels below 80 dB (A). The thermal safety assessment shows that the temperatures of the vacuum metallurgy separation system surface are all below 303 K after adopting the circulated water cooling and heat insulation measures. This study provides the environmental information of the vacuum metallurgy separation system, which is of assistance to promote the industrialisation of vacuum metallurgy separation for recovering heavy metals from e-wastes.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to estimate the benchmark doses (BMD) for renal effects for health risk assessment of residents living in Cd-polluted and non-polluted areas in a Thai population. METHODS: The study participants consisted of inhabitants aged 40 years or older who lived in a non-polluted area (40 men and 41 women) and in the environmentally polluted Mae Sot District (230 men and 370 women) located in northwestern Thailand. We measured urinary and blood cadmium (Cd) as markers of long-term exposure and urinary ß2-microglobulin (ß2-MG) and N-acetyl-ß-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) as renal tubular effect markers. An updated hybrid approach was applied to estimate the benchmark doses (BMD) and their 95% lower confidence limits (BMDL) of urinary and blood Cd for Cd-induced renal effects in these subjects. BMD and BMDL corresponding to an additional risk (BMR) of 5% were calculated with the background risk at zero exposure set to 5% after adjusting for age and smoking status. RESULTS: The estimated BMDLs of urinary Cd for renal effect markers were 6.9 for urinary ß2-MG and 4.4 for NAG in men and 8.1 for ß2-MG and 6.1 for NAG µg/g creatinine (Creat) in women. These BMDLs of urinary Cd (µg/g Creat) for NAG were less than the geometric mean urinary Cd in the polluted area (6.5 in men and 7.1 in women). The estimated BMDLs of blood Cd (µg/L) were 6.2 for urinary ß2-MG and 5.0 for NAG in men and 5.9 for ß2-MG and 5.8 for NAG in women. The calculated BMDLs were similar or less compared with the geometric mean blood Cd (µg/L) in the polluted Thai area (6.9 in men and 5.2 in women). CONCLUSION: The BMDLs of urinary and blood Cd for renal effects were estimated to be 4.4-8.1 µg/g Creat and 4.4-6.2 µg/L in the Thai population aged ≥ 40 years old, suggesting that more than 40% of the residents were at risk of adverse renal effects induced by Cd exposure in Thailand.

The health effects of low-level chronic exposure to cadmium are increasingly recognized. To improve the risk assessment, it is essential to know the relation between cadmium intake, body burden, and biomarker levels of cadmium. We combined a physiologically-based toxicokinetic (PBTK) model for cadmium with a data set from healthy kidney donors to re-estimate the model parameters and to test the effects of gender and serum ferritin on systemic uptake. Cadmium levels in whole blood, blood plasma, kidney cortex, and urinary excretion from 82 men and women were used to calculate posterior distributions for model parameters using Markov-chain Monte Carlo analysis. For never- and ever-smokers combined, the daily systemic uptake was estimated at 0.0063 µg cadmium/kg body weight in men, with 35% increased uptake in women and a daily uptake of 1.2 µg for each pack-year per calendar year of smoking. The rate of urinary excretion from cadmium accumulated in the kidney was estimated at 0.000042 day(-1), corresponding to a half-life of 45 years in the kidneys. We have provided an improved model of cadmium kinetics. As the new parameter estimates derive from a single study with measurements in several compartments in each individual, these new estimates are likely to be more accurate than the previous ones where the data used originated from unrelated data sets. The estimated urinary excretion of cadmium accumulated in the kidneys was much lower than previous estimates, neglecting this finding may result in a marked under-prediction of the true kidney burden.

Throughout the last few years, the southern North Sea has witnessed an increase in the number of stranded marine mammals, particularly the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). This species is subject to several potential threats such as exposure to contaminants, changes in food supply, marine traffic and fishery by-catch. The aims of this study were to investigate potential associations between contaminants and health status and to analyze spatial and temporal trends of metal concentrations in harbour porpoises. Selected trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Se, V and Zn) were measured in kidneys and livers of 105 harbour porpoises stranded along the southern North Sea (French and Belgian coasts from 2006 to 2013) and 27 stranded along the Bay of Biscay (French coast from 2009 to 2012). Porpoises that died from infectious disease displayed significant higher hepatic concentrations of Cd, Hg, Se and Zn compared to healthy porpoises that died from physical trauma. Adult porpoises displayed significant higher concentrations of Cd, Cr, Hg, Se and V in livers compared to juveniles. No spatial or temporal trends in metal concentrations were detected in our study. The results of the present study suggested that chemical contamination may represent one of many threats encountered by harbour porpoises, but it cannot explain alone the increase in the number of stranded individuals.

BACKGROUND: Cadmium in the human diet constitutes a potential chronic hazard to health. The objective of this study was to make a health risk assessment of dietary cadmium intake by adults in the 31 provinces (excluding Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau) of China. RESULTS: The cadmium levels in a total of 2629 individual food samples ranged from not detected (below the limit of detection) to 17.32 mg kg⁻¹, with the highest concentration being found in an offal sample. The food group 'meat' showed the highest mean level of 0.129 mg kg⁻¹, while the lowest concentration of 8.0×10⁻4 mg kg⁻¹ was measured in the food group 'fruit'. The mean cadmium intakes, hazard quotients and annual excess lifetime cancer risks for national, northern and southern adult populations in China were 3.67 µg kg⁻¹ body weight (BW) week⁻¹, 0.52 and 4.56×10⁻5 a⁻¹, 2.63 µg kg⁻¹ BW week⁻¹, 0.38 and 3.27×10⁻5 a⁻¹ and 4.56 µg kg⁻¹ BW week⁻¹, 0.65 and 5.67×10⁻5 a⁻¹ respectively. CONCLUSION: The results of risk characterization for the national adult population were lower than safety risk levels of hazard quotient and annual excess lifetime cancer risk (5×10⁻5 a⁻¹). The mean annual excess lifetime cancer risk for the southern adult population was higher than the safety risk level. Therefore the carcinogenic risk for the southern population is of concern.

BACKGROUND: Environmental exposure to cadmium causes renal dysfunction and bone damage. Cadmium contamination in food is regarded as the main environmental source of non-occupational exposure. The aim of this study was to assess the contribution of dietary cadmium exposure in environmental cadmium exposure and its health risk among adults in Shanghai, China. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey about food consumption was conducted in 2008 among 207 citizens aged over 40 years in Shanghai, China. The food frequency questionnaire was combined with food, tobacco and water cadmium exposure to estimate the daily environmental cadmium exposure in both point and probabilistic estimations. Urine and blood samples of the participants were analyzed for internal exposure to total cadmium. Correlation analysis was conducted between the internal cadmium exposure and environmental cadmium exposure. RESULTS: According to the point estimation, average daily environmental cadmium exposure of the participants was 16.7 µg/day and approached 33.8% of the provisional tolerable daily intake (PTDI). Dietary and tobacco cadmium exposure approached 25.8% and 7.9% of the PTDI, respectively. Males had higher levels of dietary cadmium exposure than females (p?=?0.002). The probabilistic model showed that 93.4% of the population did not have any health risks from dietary cadmium exposure. By sensitivity analysis, tobacco consumption, tobacco cadmium level, cadmium in vegetables and cadmium in rice accounted for 27.5%, 24.9%, 20.2% and 14.6% of the total cadmium exposure, respectively. The mean values of urinary and blood cadmium among the study population were 0.5 µg/L and 1.9 µg/L, respectively. Positive correlations were observed between environmental cadmium exposure and blood cadmium (R?=?0.52, P<0.01), tobacco cadmium intake and blood cadmium excluding non-smokers (R?=?0.26, P?=?0.049<0.05), and urine cadmium and age (R?=?0.15, P?=?0.037). CONCLUSIONS: It has been suggested that there is no increased health risk among adult residents in Shanghai, China because of recent total cadmium exposure. Vegetables and rice were the main sources of dietary cadmium intake. Tobacco cadmium exposure, which accounted for approximately 25% of the total dietary cadmium exposure, was another important source of non-occupational cadmium exposure.
