This investigation's novelty and objective reside in exploring catalytic flash pyrolysis of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) plastic residue in the presence of kaolin, with the perspective of achieving sustainable production of gasoline-range hydrocarbons. Through proximate analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and heating value determination, this study also assessed the energy-related characteristics of cross-linked polyethylene plastic residue, revealing its potential as an energy source (44.58 MJ kg-1) and suitable raw material for pyrolysis due to its low ash content and high volatile matter content. To understand the performance as a low-cost catalyst in the flash pyrolysis of cross-linked polyethylene plastic residue, natural kaolin was subjected to characterization through thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Cross-linked polyethylene plastic residue was subjected to thermal and catalytic pyrolysis in an analytical microreactor coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS system), operating at 500 °C, to characterize the distribution and composition of volatile reaction products. The application of kaolin as a catalyst resulted in a decline of the relative concentration of hydrocarbons in the diesel range (C8-C24) from approximately 87 % to 28 %, and a reduction in lubricating oils (C14-C50) from about 70 % to 13 %, while concomitantly increasing the relative concentration of lighter hydrocarbons in the gasoline range (C8-C12) from around 28 % to 87 %. Therefore, catalytic flash pyrolysis offers the potential for converting this plastic waste into a new and abundant chemical source of gasoline-range hydrocarbons. This process can be deemed viable and sustainable for managing and valorizing cross-linked polyethylene plastic residue.

This work focuses to the value added utilization of animal sewage sludge into gases, bio-oil and char using synthetic zeolite (ZSM-5 and Y-zeolite) and natural sourced (diatomite, kaolin, perlite) materials as catalysts. Pyrolysis was performed in a one-stage bench-scale reactor at temperatures of 400 and 600 °C. The catalyst was mixed with the raw material before the pyrolysis. Catalysts had a significant effect on the yield of products, because the amount of volatile products was higher in their presence, than without them. In case of kaolin, due to the structural transformation occurring between 500-600 °C, a significant increase in activity was observed in terms of pyrolysis reactions resulting in volatiles. The hydrogen content of the gas products increased significantly at a temperature of 600 °C and in thermo-catalysts pyrolysis. In the presence of catalysts, bio-oil had more favourable properties.

The colloidal transport of trace (Fe, Al, Ba, Pb, Sr, U) and ultra-trace (226Ra) elements was studied in a mining environment. An original approach combining 0.45 µm filtered water sampling, the Diffusive Gradient in Thin films (DGT) technique, mineralogical characterization, and geochemical modelling was developed and tested at 17 sampling points. DGT was used for the truly dissolved fraction of the elements of interest, while the 0.45 µm filtration includes both colloidal and truly dissolved fractions (together referred to as total dissolved fraction). Results indicated a colloidal fraction for Al (up to 50%), Ba (up to 86%), and Fe (up to 99%) explained by the presence of submicrometric grains of kaolinite, barite, and ferrihydrite, respectively. Furthermore, the total dissolved 226Ra concentration in the water samples reached up to 10-25 Bq/L (1.2-3.0 10-12 mol/L) at 3 sampling points, while the truly dissolved aqueous 226Ra concentrations were in the mBq/L range. Such high total dissolved concentrations are explained by retention on colloidal barite, accounting for 95% of the total dissolved 226Ra concentration. The distribution of 226Ra between the truly dissolved and colloidal fractions was accurately reproduced using a (Rax,Ba1-x)SO4 solid solution, with values of the Guggenheim parameter a0 close to ideality. 226Ra sorption on ferrihydrite and kaolinite, other minerals well known for their retention properties, could not explain the measured colloidal fractions despite their predominance. This illustrates the key role of barite in such environments. The measured concentrations of total dissolved U were very low at all the sampling points (<4.5 10-10 mol/L) and the colloidal fraction of U accounted for less than 65%. U sorption on ferrihydrite could account for the colloidal fraction. This original approach can be applied to other trace and ultra-trace elements to complement when necessary classical environmental surveys usually performed by filtration on 0.45 µm.

Low-grade kaolin is the largest emissions of industrial solid waste that is difficult to dispose of and pollutes the environment seriously. From the perspective of harmless and complete resource utilization, we proposed a novel strategy that combines the wet leaching under mild conditions and physical beneficiation for the facile and low-cost high-valued utilization of low-grade kaolin that involves high-efficiency recovery of aluminum (Al), silicon (Si), and titanium (Ti). The key to successful implementation of this method lies in the new discovery that the residual SiO2 after Al extraction of kaolinite by acid leaching under specific conditions could be rapidly dissolved in dilute NaOH solution at room temperature 25 °C. This highly reactive SiO2 challenges the conventional notions of various silica species are usually chemically stable. By adjusting the key technical parameters of the thermal activation-acid leaching process, the selective and efficient extraction of Al2O3 from low-grade kaolin was realized. The acid leaching residue was then subjected to selective recovery of SiO2 by alkaline leaching at 25 °C to obtain high-quality sodium silicate. Finally, the alkali leaching residue as titanium coarse concentrate was separated by centrifugal concentrator to obtain artificial rutile (TiO2 >91.06%). The key mechanism for the formation of the highly reactive silica was also systematically studied and confirmed.

In this study, we utilized low-cost halloysite (Hal) for the first time to enhance the solid-phase enrichment and stability of heavy metals (HMs) during solid waste pyrolysis through experimental and theoretical methods, and compared with kaolinite (Kao). Experimental results demonstrated that Hal was superior to Kao in improving the solid-phase enrichment of HMs. Specifically, the solid-phase enrichment of Cd increased by 32.6 % (500 °C) and 25.94 % (600 °C), while that of Pb and Zn increased by 17.37 %/16.83 % and 19.82 %/22.37 % (700/800 °C), respectively. Adding Hal reduced the proportion of HMs in the unstable fraction (F1 + F2), consequently lowering the environmental risk of biochar and the extractable state of HMs. Through Grand canonical Monte Carlo and Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations, we analyzed the adsorption amounts, adsorption sites, and adsorption mechanisms of Cd/Pb compound on Hal/Kao surfaces, revealing that the primary factor influencing the adsorption performance of Hal and Kao was the difference in specific surface area. The adsorption amounts of HMs by Hal were significantly higher than Kao and decreased with increasing temperature, while the difference in adsorption performance caused by structural bending was negligible. The DFT results indicated that Cd and Pb monomers were stabilized by establishing covalent bonds with OH or reactive O atoms on the Al-(001) surface, whereas the covalent bonds with ionic bonding properties formed between Cl atoms and unsaturated Al atoms played a crucial role in stabilizing HM chlorides. Furthermore, the adsorption energy of Hal on HMs increased with the removal rate of OH. Our study highlights the potential of Hal in stabilizing HMs during pyrolysis without requiring any modifications, thereby avoiding the generation of modified waste solutions and unnecessary cost loss.

In this work, a rapid detection method using solid sampling electrothermal vaporization atomic absorption spectrometry (SS-ETV-AAS) was established for cadmium in chocolate. The instrumental system includes a solid sampling ETV unit, a catalytic pyrolysis furnace, an AAS detector, and a gas supply system with only an air pump and a hydrogen generator. Herein, MgO material with 1.0−1.5 mm particle size was first employed to replace the kaolin filler previously used to further shorten the peak width and to thereby improve the sensitivity. With 350 mL/min of air, a chocolate sample was heated for 25 s from 435 to 464 °C to remove water and organic matrices; then, after supplying 240 mL/min hydrogen and turning down air to 120 mL/min, a N2/H2 mixture gas was formed to accelerate Cd vaporization from chocolate residue under 465 to 765 °C. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limit (LOD) was obviously lowered to 70 pg/g (vs. previous 150 pg/g) with R2 > 0.999; the relative standard deviations (RSD) of repeated measurements for real chocolate samples ranged from 1.5% to 6.4%, indicating a favorable precision; and the Cd recoveries were in the range of 93−107%, proving a satisfied accuracy. Thus, the total analysis time is less than 3 min without the sample digestion process. Thereafter, 78 chocolate samples with different brands from 9 producing countries in China market were collected and measured by this proposed method. Based on the measured Cd concentrations, a dietary exposure assessment was performed for Chinese residents, and the target hazard quotient (THQ) values are all less than 1, proving no significant health risk from intaking chocolate cadmium for Chinese residents.

This paper presents a new, innovative technological approach, in line with Circular Economy principles, to the effective management of sludge generated during municipal wastewater treatment processes and subsequently used for biogas production. This approach allows for optimal, functional, and controlled cascade-type biotechnological thermal conversion of carbon compounds present in sewage sludge, later in solid digestate residues (after biogas production), and finally in the ash structure (after incineration, purposefully dosed nanostructural additives make the production of a useful solid product possible, especially for cyclic adsorption and slow release of nutrients (N, P, K) in the soil). The idea is generally targeted at achieving an innovative conversion cycle under a Circular Economy framework. In particular, it is based on an energy carrier (methane biogas) and direct energy production. The functionalized combustion by-products can be advantageous in agriculture. The use of ashes with nanostructural additives (halloysite, kaolinite) from combustion of sewage sludge after the anaerobic fermentation as an adsorbent of selected nutrients important in agriculture (Na+, K+, NO3-, SO42-, PO43-, Cl-) was verified at laboratory scale. The tests were carried out both for pure ash and for the ash derived from combustion with the purposeful addition of kaolinite or halloysite. The equilibrium conditions for nitrate, potassium, sodium, phosphate(V), sulphate(VI), and chloride ions from aqueous solutions with the use of the three adsorbent structures were determined. The obtained innovative results were interpreted theoretically with adsorption isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Jovanovic). The most spectacular and clearly favorable results related to the influence of nanostructural additives in the process of sludge combustion, and formation of sorption surfaces under high temperature conditions were identified in the case of sorption-based separation of phosphate(V) ions (an increase from 1.13% to 61.24% with the addition of kaolinite, and even up to 76.19% with addition of halloysite).

The TEG 6s (Haemonetics) point-of-care viscoelastic analyzer is portable, compact, simple to use, and has the potential for rapid viscoelastic analysis that can guide the treatment of veterinary patients at the site of care. Although approved for use in people, the TEG 6s has yet to be evaluated for hemostatic analysis in veterinary medicine. Citrated whole blood (CWB) was collected from 27 healthy dogs. An aliquot of CWB from each dog was diluted by 33% with an isotonic crystalloid, representing an in vitro model of hemodilution. Unaltered and diluted CWB samples were analyzed using 2 TEG 6s and 6 TEG 5000 (Haemonetics) analyzers. The 6 TEG 5000 analyzers ran duplicate analyses of either unaltered or diluted samples using 1 of 3 reagents (Haemonetics): Kaolin TEG, RapidTEG, or TEG Functional Fibrinogen. Duplicate TEG 5000 analyses were averaged and compared with a single TEG 6s analysis. Lin concordance correlation coefficient and Bland-Altman plots were used to evaluate agreement of reaction time, kinetic time, alpha angle, maximum amplitude (MA), and G value (G) for samples activated with Kaolin TEG, and agreement of MA for samples activated with RapidTEG between the 2 machines. Overall, agreement between the TEG 6s and TEG 5000 analyzers was poor. Viscoelastic measurements by the TEG 6s and TEG 5000 in healthy dogs were not all interchangeable. Agreement was satisfactory only for MA and G measurements of diluted blood samples activated with Kaolin TEG, and MA measurements for both unaltered and diluted blood samples activated with RapidTEG.

Quinolone antibiotics (QNs) can be potential hazard to environment and human. Combination of experimental and theoretical studies was used to analyze the adsorption properties of norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin on modified thermally activated kaolin (KL). Main factors (calcination temperature, dose, pH, cations and regeneration) affecting the adsorption were discussed. Adsorption processes fit the pseudo-second order kinetic and Langmuir model well. The adsorption removal of norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin can reach 88.53%, 89.43% and 91.46%, respectively. Cations inhibited adsorption, and AlS-KLB can maintain 80% efficiency in five cycles under optimal conditions. Simulations showed that the materials had good adsorption capacity for QNs, and the "①" of KL had the best capacity. Simulations explain the adsorption mechanism: F, H, O atoms of QNs are covalently bonded to O atoms from KL, Al2O3 and Al (OH)3, C atoms from amorphous carbon and H atoms from C-H and Al (OH)3. The Al atoms of Al2O3 and Al, Si atoms of KL are ionically bonded to F, H, O atoms of QNs. This study shed new light on the removal of QNs by providing low-cost and efficient modified KL and elucidating the adsorption mechanism in conjunction with DFT simulations.

Chlorine and chloramine are widely used to maintain the microbial safety after drinking water treatment plants. Particles existing in the treated water may react with these chemical disinfectants, and impact the efficacy of disinfection. However, the protective effects of particles without-disinfectant demand on bacteria in the chlorination/chloramination are not well known. In this study, two laboratory-derived bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) and two no-disinfectant demand particles (Fe2O3 and kaolin) in drinking water were selected to build particle-associated bacteria (PAB) systems, and their resistance to chlorine/chloramine was further assessed. Flow cytometry (FCM) was employed to image PAB systems and assess the removal rate of bacteria. The results were that particles showed protective effects on bacteria in half of chlorine experiments and 90% of chloramination. The protection was related to the combination form of particles and bacteria tied to neither particle species nor size, and there was no positive relationship between the protection effect and water turbidity. S. aureus attached to Fe2O3 had stronger resistance than kaolin, and kaolin protected E. coli better than Fe2O3. The same trend was observed in both chemical disinfectants, and more significant resistance had been shown in chloramination than chlorination. FCM images which gave a qualitative description on the combination states of different PAB systems may be a clue to explain the strength of the resistance. Environmental bacterial strains and particles are recommended in the future to explore practical applications.

The salinization of the groundwater wells in Siwa oasis, Egypt represents a critical environmental and economic issue. Developing low-cost, effective, and self-supported inorganic membranes were suggested as suitable desalination techniques. Zeolite/geopolymer (Z/GP) membrane was synthesized as a potential low-cost membrane for effective desalination of brackish groundwater in Siwa Oasis, Egypt. The membrane was synthesized by simple geopolymerization for natural kaolinite and diatomite at room temperature. This was followed by hydrothermal growth of zeolite at 100 °C for 24 h to produce zeolitized geopolymer as potential inorganic membrane. After that, the prepared membrane was incorporated in the pervaporation desalination system considering the effect of the membrane thickness and the temperature. The results demonstrated water flux values of 8.34 kg.m-2.h-1, 7.63 kg.m-2.h-1, and 7.05 kg.m-2.h-1 for the tested membrane at thicknesses of 1 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm, respectively. This associated with significant salt rejection prearranges 95.8% (1 mm), 97.6% (2 mm), and 99.4% (3 mm). Moreover, the high-temperature value (90 °C) is of strong positive impact on the water flux (7.82 kg.m-2.h-1) and a slight impact on the salt rejection (99.6%). The membrane is of significant stability considering the obtained water flux (7.51 kg.m-2.h-1) and salt rejection (99.57%) after 130 h. The reusability properties of the Z/GP membrane demonstrated its suitability to be used in the desalination process for five runs. Therefore, the synthetic Z/GP membrane is a highly recommended product for simple, effective, low cost, and available desalination technique brackish groundwater in Siwa Oasis.

The quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) method was enhanced to solve the population balance model (PBM) including aggregation and fragmentation processes for simulating the temporal evolutions of characteristic sizes and floc size distributions (FSDs) of cohesive sediments. Ideal cases with analytical solutions were firstly adopted to validate this QMC model to illustrate selected pure aggregation, pure fragmentation, and combined aggregation and fragmentation systems. Two available laboratory data sets, one with suspended kaolinite and the other with a mixture of kaolinite and montmorillonite, were further used to monitor the FSDs of cohesive sediments in controlled shear conditions. The model results show reasonable agreements with both analytical solutions and laboratory experiments. Moreover, different QMC schemes were tested and compared with the standard Monte Carlo scheme and a Latin Hypercube Sampling scheme to optimize the model performance. It shows that all QMC schemes perform better in both accuracy and time consumption than standard Monte Carlo scheme. In particular, compared with other schemes, the QMC scheme using Halton sequence requires the least particle numbers in the simulated system to reach reasonable accuracy. In the sensitivity tests, we also show that the fractal dimension and the fragmentation distribution function have large impacts on the predicted FSDs. This study indicates a great advance in employing QMC schemes to solve PBM for simulating the flocculation of cohesive sediments.

Sedimentation processes are fundamental to solids/liquid separation in water and wastewater treatment, and therefore a robust understanding of the settlement characteristics of mass fractal aggregates (flocs) formed in the flocculation stage is fundamental to optimized settlement tank design and operation. However, the use of settling as a technique to determine aggregates' traits is limited by current understanding of permeability. In this paper, we combine experimental and numerical approaches to assess settling velocities of fractal aggregates. Using a non-intrusive in situ digital image-based method, three- and two-dimensional fractal dimensions were calculated for kaolin-based flocs. By considering shape and fractal dimension, the porosity, density and settling velocities of the flocs were calculated individually, and settling velocities compared with those of spheres of the same density using Stokes' law. Shape analysis shows that the settling velocities for fractal aggregates may be greater or less than those for perfect spheres. For example, fractal aggregates with floc fractal dimension, Df = 2.61, floc size, df > 320 µm and dp = 7.5 µm settle with lower velocities than those predicted by Stokes' law; whilst, for Df = 2.33, all aggregates of df > 70 µm and dp = 7.5 µm settled below the velocity calculated by Stokes' law for spheres. Conversely, fractal settling velocities were higher than spheres for all the range of sizes, when Df of 2.83 was simulated. The ratio of fractal aggregate to sphere settling velocity (the former being obtained from fractal porosity and density considerations), varied from 0.16 to 4.11 for aggregates in the range of 10 and 1,000 µm, primary particle size of 7.5 µm and a three-dimensional fractal dimension between 2.33 and 2.83. However, the ratio decreases to the range of 0.04-2.92 when primary particle size changes to 1.0 µm for the same fractal dimensions. Using the floc analysis technique developed here, the results demonstrate the difference in settlement behaviour between the approach developed here and the traditional Stokes' law approach using solid spheres. The technique and results demonstrate the improvements in understanding, and hence value to be derived, from an analysis based on fractal, rather than Euclidean, geometry when considering flocculation and subsequent clarification performance.

INTRODUCTION: Geophagia although pleasurable and somewhat a necessity among pregnant women, also comes along with its own attendant problems such as exposure to potentially hazardous substances like bacteria, fungi, helminthes and ova, radioactive materials, and toxic elemental minerals in the soil depending on the geographical location. METHODOLOGY: This study evaluated the potential health risk involved during the exposure of pregnant women to toxic elemental minerals via the consumption of clay as pica (geophagia). Elemental mineral analysis was carried out using Buck Scientific 210VGP Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (Buck Scientific, Inc. East Norwalk, USA). Risk assessment methods were also used to ascertain the various risks factors and the overall risk level. RESULTS: Concentrations of the macro elements investigated were 1.38 ± 1.5, 2.40 ± 1.5, 7.74 ± 1.5, 4.01 ± 1.0, 13.24 ± 2.2 and 13.76 ± 2.1 mg/Kg for iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg) and sodium (Na) respectively. While that for the micro elements were 1.63 ± 0.03 µg/Kg, 4.72 ± 0.8, 0.53 ± 0.02 and 1.85 ± 0.3 mg/kg respectively for arsenic (As), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb) and nickel (Ni). Estimated Daily Intake (EDI), Hazard Quotient (HQ), Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) and Total Target Hazard Quotient (TTHQ) values ranged 0.611-5.44 (mg/kg Bw/day), 6.26 × 10- 4 - 106.5, 0.067-10.34 and 15 respectively. CONCLUSION: There is the likelihood of posing adverse health problems when clay samples obtained from Anfoega which is sited in the Volta region of Ghana is consumed due to the fact that the HQ's of these elemental minerals were > 1 which points to high content of Manganese (Mn) and Nickel (Ni). It is also likely to cause adverse health problems in an individual's life time since THQ for Arsenic, Lead and Nickel were above 1. Ultimately, the cumulative effect of these toxicants were exceedingly great (≤ 15) which implied a high level of unsafety associated with this clay. Per the results from this study, it is not safe for pregnant women to consume clay as pica since these toxic elements may cause detrimental effects on the foetus of the unborn child.

Adsorption capacity and percentage removal efficiency of Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions were studied and compared between raw kaolinite and acid-activated kaolinite. Acid-activated kaolin was prepared by refluxing raw kaolinite with concentrated sulphuric acid followed by calcination to enhance its surface properties and adsorption ability. Both raw and acid-activated kaolinite samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, scanning electron micrograph and zeta potential analysis. Upon acid treatment, acid-activated kaolinite was discovered to have altered chemical composition and larger BET surface area as compared with raw kaolinite. The batch adsorption studies on aqueous solution were performed under different factors such as contact time, pH condition, adsorbent dosage, initial metal ion concentration and temperature. The optimum condition was selected for each factor including a contact time of 60 min, pH of 7.0, adsorbent dosage of 0.1 g, initial metal ion concentration of 100 mg/L and temperature of 25 °C. Then, the adsorption studies on wastewater samples were carried out at the selected optimum conditions. Acid-activated kaolinite always had better adsorption capacity and percentage removal efficiency than raw kaolinite due to the increasing amount of negative charges on the adsorbent surface and the number of metal ion binding sites upon acid treatment. The adsorption kinetic obtained was well described by the pseudo-second-order model, whereas the adsorption isotherms obtained were well described by either the Freundlich or the Langmuir adsorption model. The results showed that acid-activated kaolinite adsorbent is a better option as a favourable and feasible commercial low-cost adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

This work evaluated the antimicrobial efficacy of kaolin clay and its loaded forms with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) against bacterial isolates from different water supplies (tap, underground and surface water) in addition to wastewater. A total of 160 water samples were collected from different water sources in the investigated districts. Samples were cultured for isolation and serological identification of pathogenic bacteria. AgNPs were synthesized by a typical one-step synthesis protocol, where CNTs were carried out in a reactor employing the double bias-assisted hot filament chemical vapor deposition method. Both were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, infrared and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy. The antimicrobial efficacy of each of natural kaolin clay, AgNPs- and CNTs-loaded clays were evaluated by their application in four concentrations (0.01, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.1 ppm) at different contact times (5 min, 15 min, 30 min and 2 h). AgNPs-loaded clays at concentrations of 0.05 and 0.1 mg/l for 2 h contact time exhibited a higher bactericidal efficacy on Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. (70, 70, 80 and 90%, respectively) compared to CNTs-loaded clay. Concluding, the application of AgNPs-loaded clay for removal of water bacterial contaminants at a concentration of 0.1 ppm for 2 h contact times resulted in highly effective removals.

Low-cost tubular macroporous supports for ceramic membranes were elaborated using the extrusion method, followed by curing, debinding, and sintering processes, from a powder mixture containing kaolin, starch, and sand. The obtained substrates were characterized using mercury intrusion porosimetry, water absorption test, water permeability, scanning electron microscopy, and three-point bending test to evaluate the effects of the additives on the relevant characteristics. According to experimental results, adding the starch ratio to the kaolin powder shows a notable impact on the membrane porosity and consequently on the water permeability of the tubular supports, whereas their mechanical strength decreased compared to those prepared from kaolin alone. It has been shown that the addition of an appropriate amount of starch to the ceramic paste leads to obtaining membrane supports with the desired porosity. Indeed, the water permeability increased significantly from 20 to 612 L h-1 m-2 bar-1 for samples without and with 20 wt% of starch, respectively, as well as the open porosity, the apparent porosity, and the pore size distribution. The bending strength decreased slightly and reached about 4 MPa for samples with the highest starch amounts. On the other hand, the incorporation of sand in a mixture of kaolin + 10 wt% starch increased the mechanical strength and the water permeability. The samples containing 3 wt% of sand exhibited a bending strength four times higher than the supports without sand; the water permeability measured was about 221 L h-1 m-2 bar-1. These elaborated tubular supports for membrane are found to be suitable for solution concentration; they were applied for algal solution and are also easily cleaned by water.

BACKGROUND: Most data in the literature report reduced coagulation activities in the first few days of life with respect to adults and the effects of these differences must be considered when diagnosing and treating hemostatic disorders. The management of pediatric population is further complicated by the lack of age-related reference values and by the unreliability of currently-used hemostatic tests, while an accurate interpretation of results is required to reduce the cases of inappropriate investigation. Thromboelastography (TEG®) is a point-of-care test that provides an efficient analysis of the dynamic viscoelastic properties of whole blood that may provide superior evaluation and management of coagulopathies in newborn. This study was designed to determine reference values for kaolin-activated TEG in full-term healthy newborn by taking small blood samples from the umbilical cord and facilitate accurate interpretation of neonatal TEG results. METHODS: Kaolin-activated TEG was performed in 85 full-term healthy newborn and 40 healthy adults. TEG data analyzed were: reaction time, clot formation time, α-angle, maximum amplitude, clot lysis at 30 minutes, Functional Fibrinogen and coagulation index. RESULTS: Reference values for kaolin-activated TEG in healthy full-term newborn are presented, despite a large variability in reaction time, clot formation time and in coagulation index, not significant impact on range values was evident and no significant differences between neonates and adults were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Neonatal coagulation tests are closer to adult standards and although significant age-related differences in kaolin-activated TEG variables do not appear to be present, the usefulness of TEG for pediatric population is an open field that needs to be further evaluated, the results of this study can be used to interpret the data for newborn.

INTRODUCTION: Nausea is a subjective sensation often preceding emesis in humans. Drug-induced nausea remains difficult to predict in preclinical tests. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of emetic agents in rats (pica behavior), ferrets (acute and delayed phases of emesis) or dogs (emesis and cardiovascular endpoints). METHODS: Rats and ferrets were administered cisplatin (±aprepitant/ondansetron or aprepitant) or apomorphine (±domperidone). Telemetered dogs were administered apomorphine (±domperidone). Food and kaolin intake was measured in rats whereas the number of emetic events was counted in ferrets and dogs. Cardiovascular changes were also monitored in dogs. RESULTS: In rats, cisplatin (6mg/kg, i.p.) increased kaolin intake (+2257%, p<0.001). The cisplatin effects were not reversed by the combination of aprepitant/ondansetron (2mg/kg, p.o./2mg/kg, i.p.) or by aprepitant (30mg/kg, p.o.). Apomorphine (10mg/kg, i.p.) did not induce pica behavior. In ferrets, cisplatin (8mg/kg, i.p.) induced acute and delayed emesis (371.8±47.8 emetic events over 72h) which was antagonized by aprepitant (1mg/kg, p.o.). Apomorphine (0.25mg/kg, s.c.) induced acute emesis (38.8±8.7 emetic events over 2h) which was abolished by domperidone (0.1mg/kg, s.c.). In dogs, apomorphine (100µg/kg, s.c.) induced emesis and tachycardia which were decreased by domperidone (0.2mg/kg, i.v.). CONCLUSIONS: The assessment of emesis in the ferret or in the dog displays a strong predictive value. In contrast, assessing nausea remains challenging in all animal species and the use of pica behavior remains questionable in the context of antiemetic drug development.

INTRODUCTION: Impairment of fibrinolysis during sepsis is associated with worse outcome. Early identification of this condition could be of interest. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether a modified point-of-care viscoelastic hemostatic assay can detect sepsis-induced impairment of fibrinolysis and to correlate impaired fibrinolysis with morbidity and mortality. METHODS: This single center observational prospective pilot study was performed in an adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a tertiary academic hospital. Forty consecutive patients admitted to the ICU with severe sepsis or septic shock were included. Forty healthy individuals served as controls. We modified conventional kaolin activated thromboelastography (TEG) adding urokinase to improve assessment of fibrinolysis in real time (UK-TEG). TEG, UK-TEG, plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI)-1, thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI), d-dimer, DIC scores and morbidity (rated with the SOFA score) were measured upon ICU admission. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) of mortality at ICU discharge. RESULTS: UK-TEG revealed a greater impairment of fibrinolysis in sepsis patients compared to healthy individuals confirmed by PAI-1. TAFI was not different between sepsis patients and healthy individuals. 18/40 sepsis patients had fibrinolysis impaired according to UK-TEG and showed higher SOFA score (8 (6-13) vs 5 (4-7), p = 0.03), higher mortality (39% vs 5%, p = 0.01) and greater markers of cellular damage (lactate levels, LDH and bilirubin). Mortality at ICU discharge was predicted by the degree of fibrinolysis impairment measured by UK-TEG Ly30 (%) parameter (OR 0.95, 95% CI 0.93-0.98, p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Sepsis-induced impairment of fibrinolysis detected at UK-TEG was associated with increased markers of cellular damage, morbidity and mortality.
