Psychiatric and metabolic disorders are highly comorbid and the relationship between these disorders is bidirectional. The mechanisms underlying the association between psychiatric and metabolic disorders are presently unclear, which warrants investigation into the dynamics of the interplay between metabolism, substrate utilization, and energy expenditure in psychiatric populations, and how these constructs compare to those in healthy controls. Indirect calorimetry (IC) methods are a reliable, minimally invasive means for assessing metabolic rate and substrate utilization in humans. This review synthesizes the extant literature on the use of IC on resting metabolism in psychiatric populations to investigate the interaction between psychiatric and metabolic functioning. Consistently, resting energy expenditures and/or substrate utilization values were significantly different between psychiatric and healthy populations in the studies contained in this review. Furthermore, resting energy expenditure values were systematically overestimated when derived from predictive equations, compared to when measured by IC, in psychiatric populations. High heterogeneity between study populations (e.g., differing diagnoses and drug regimens) and methodologies (e.g., differing posture, time of day, and fasting status at measurement) impeded the synthesis of results. Standardized IC protocols would benefit this line of research by enabling meta-analyses, revealing trends within and between different psychiatric disorders.

RESUMO

Uma das demandas centrais das pessoas em situação de rua é a dificuldade de acesso a trabalho e renda, o que tanto pode levá-las a essa circunstância como dificultar sua saída das ruas. Nessa direção, em parceria com o Movimento Nacional da População em Situação de Rua em Natal, Rio Grande do Norte (MNPR/RN), Brasil, realizamos projeto de extensão com os objetivos de fortalecer as ações de geração de renda para os militantes do referido movimento e para o movimento em si e de promover a organização coletiva e política dos militantes do MNPR/RN em torno da pauta trabalho. Baseamo-nos na Economia Solidária para elaborar ações de geração de renda e fortalecimento político, e na Psicologia Social do Trabalho para informar sobre as intervenções realizadas pela equipe extensionista. Como estratégia de ação, foram realizados cinco bazares solidários em 2019, os quais envolveram militantes do MNPR/RN e extensionistas em reuniões preparatórias, arrecadação de materiais e efetivação dos bazares. Avaliou-se que os bazares foram uma ótima estratégia para a arrecadação de fundos para o movimento e a geração de renda imediata para os militantes envolvidos, mas que não garantiram a médio e longo prazo a renda dessas pessoas. Também possibilitaram o fortalecimento da autonomia, da participação ativa como trabalhadores e trabalhadoras e do aprendizado mútuo sobre princípios da Economia Solidária.(AU)


One of the main demands of people living on the streets is the difficulty in accessing work and income, which can either lead them to this circumstance or make it difficult for them to leave the streets. In this direction, in partnership with the National Movement of Homeless Population in Natal, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (Movimento Nacional População de Rua - MNPR/RN), we carried out an extension project with the objectives of strengthening the actions to generate income for the militants of the referred movement and for the movement itself and to promote the collective and political organization of the MNPR/RN militants around the work agenda. We start with the Solidarity Economy for the elaboration of actions to generate income and political strengthening, and from the Social Psychology of Work to inform about the interventions carried out by the extension team. As an action strategy, five solidarity bazaars were held in 2019, involving MNPR/RN militants and extension workers in preparatory meetings, collection of materials, and holding the bazaars. The bazaars were considered an excellent strategy for raising funds for the movement and generating immediate income for the activists involved, but that they could not guarantee the income of these people in the medium and long term. It also allowed for the strengthening of autonomy, active participation as a female or male worker, and mutual learning on the principles of Solidarity Economy.(AU)


Una de las principales demandas de las personas en situación de calle es la dificultad para acceder al trabajo y a los ingresos, lo que puede llevarlos a esta situación o dificultarles su salida de la calle. En este sentido, en colaboración con el Movimiento Nacional de Población en Situación de Calle en Natal/RN (MNPR/RN), realizamos un proyecto de extensión con los objetivos de fortalecer las acciones de generación de ingresos para los activistas del referido movimiento y para el movimiento en sí y de promover la organización colectiva y política de los activistas del MNPR/RN en torno a las normas del trabajo. Partimos de la economía solidaria para desarrollar acciones de generación de ingresos y de fortalecimiento político, y desde la Psicología Social del Trabajo para informar de las intervenciones que realiza el equipo de extensión. Como estrategia de acción, en el 2019 se realizaron cinco ferias solidarias, en las cuales participaron activistas y grupos de extensión del MNPR/RN en reuniones preparatorias, recolección de materiales y realización de las ferias. Se consideró que las ferias son una excelente estrategia para recaudar fondos para el movimiento y generar ingresos inmediatos para los activistas involucrados, pero no pueden garantizar los ingresos de estas personas a mediano y largo plazo. También permiten fortalecer la autonomía, la participación activa como trabajador y trabajadora, y el aprendizaje mutuo sobre los principios de la economía solidaria.(AU)

Sleep duration, quality, and rest-activity pattern-a measure for inferring circadian rhythm-are influenced by multiple factors including access to electricity. Recent findings suggest that the safety and comfort afforded by technology may improve sleep but negatively impact rest-activity stability. According to the circadian entrainment hypothesis, increased access to electric lighting should lead to weaker and less uniform circadian rhythms, measured by stability of rest-activity patterns. Here, we investigate sleep in a Maya community in Guatemala who are in a transitional stage of industrialization. We predicted that (i) sleep will be shorter and less efficient in this population than in industrial settings, and that (ii) rest-activity patterns will be weaker and less stable than in contexts with greater exposure to the natural environment and stronger and more stable than in settings more buffered by technologic infrastructure. Our results were mixed. Compared to more industrialized settings, in our study population sleep was 4.87% less efficient (78.39% vs 83.26%). We found no significant difference in sleep duration. Rest-activity patterns were more uniform and less variable than in industrial settings (interdaily stability = 0.58 vs 0.43; intradaily variability = 0.53 vs 0.60). Our results suggest that industrialization does not inherently reduce characteristics of sleep quality; instead, the safety and comfort afforded by technological development may improve sleep, and an intermediate degree of environmental exposure and technological buffering may support circadian rhythm strength and stability.

Optimal energy provision, guided by measured resting energy expenditure (REE) and determined by indirect calorimetry (IC), is fundamental in Intensive Care Units (ICU). Because IC availability is limited, methods to predict REE based on carbon dioxide production (VCO2) measurements (REEVCO2) alone have been proposed as a surrogate for REE measured by IC (REEIC). The study aimed at externally and internally validating the accuracy of the REEVCO2 as an alternative to REEIC in mechanically ventilated children. A ventilator's integrated gas exchange module (E-COVX) was used to prospectively measure REEIC and predict REEVCO2 on 107 mechanically ventilated children during the first 24 h of admission. The accuracy of the REEVCO2 compared to REEIC was assessed through the calculation of bias and precision, paired median differences, linear regression, and ROC analysis. Accuracy within ±10% of the REEIC was deemed acceptable for the REEVCO2 equation. The calculated REEVCO2 based on respiratory quotient (RQ) 0.89 resulted in a mean bias of −72.7 kcal/day (95% limits of agreement −321.7 to 176.3 kcal/day) and a high coefficient of variation (174.7%), while 51.4% of the calculations fell outside the ±10% accuracy rate. REEVCO2 derived from RQ 0.80 or 0.85 did not improve accuracy. Only measured RQ (Beta 0.73, p < 0.001) and no-recorded neuromuscular blocking agents (Beta −0.13, p = 0.044) were independently associated with the REEVCO2−REEIC difference. Among the recorded anthropometric, metabolic, nutrition, or clinical variables, only measured RQ was a strong predictor of REEVCO2 inaccuracy (p < 0.001). Cutoffs of RQ = 0.80 predicted 89% of underestimated REEIC (sensitivity 0.99; specificity 0.89) and RQ = 0.82 predicted 56% of overestimated REEIC (sensitivity of 0.99; specificity 0.56). REEVCO2 cannot be recommended as an alternative to REEIC in mechanically ventilated children, regardless of the metabolic, anthropometric, or clinical status at the time of the evaluation.

Undernourishment is promoted by an unbalance between energy expenditure and intake. Resting energy expenditure (REE) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is commonly predicted using the Harris-Benedict (HB) and the Angelillo-Moore (AM) formulas, however no study has investigated to which extent COPD patients with an energy unbalance go unnoticed when REE is predicted rather than measured with indirect calorimetry. This study demonstrates that 66% and 25% of negatively unbalanced patients go unnoticed when using HB and AM, respectively, urging to discourage the use of REE predicting formulas in clinical practice, at least in cases at risk of undernourishment.

Humans acquire energy from the environment for survival. A central question for nutritional sciences is how much energy is required to sustain cellular work while maintaining an adequate body mass. Because human energy balance is not exempt from thermodynamic principles, the energy requirement can be approached from the energy expenditure. Conceptual and technological advances have allowed understanding of the physiological determinants of energy expenditure. Body mass, sex, and age are the main factors determining energy expenditure. These factors constitute the basis for predictive equations for resting (REE) and total (TEE) energy expenditure in healthy adults. These equations yield predictions that differ up to ~400 kcal/d for REE and ~550 kcal/d for TEE. Identifying additional factors accounting for such variability and the most valid equations appears relevant. This review used novel approaches based on mathematical modeling of REE and analyses of the data from which REE predictive equations were generated. As for TEE, R2 and SE were considered because only a few predictive equations are available. From these analyses, Oxford's and Plucker's equations appear valid for predicting REE and TEE in adults, respectively.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The new indirect calorimeter developed in the framework of the ICALIC project was first evaluated in ventilation mode. This second phase aimed to compare its ease of use and precision with another commonly used device in spontaneously breathing adult patients using a canopy hood or a face mask. METHODS: The time required to measure resting energy expenditure (REE) with Q-NRG® in canopy and face mask mode was compared with Quark RMR® in canopy mode by sequential measurements in 45 and 40 spontaneously breathing adult patients, respectively. Their precision was assessed at different time intervals, using coefficients of variation (CV%) and repeated measures one-way ANOVA. Agreement between the two devices was evaluated by correlation coefficients, Bland-Altman plots, and paired t-test. Patients' characteristics potentially affecting the measurement were assessed using linear regression analysis. RESULTS: REE measurement with Q-NRG® was faster than Quark RMR® (19.7 ± 2.9 min vs 24.5 ± 4.3 min, P < 0.001). In canopy mode, Q-NRG® gave values similar to Quark RMR®, with 73% of patients achieving a steady state (CV% <10%) within the 5-15 min interval. In face mask mode, Q-NRG® was less stable than Quark RMR® in canopy mode, and steady state was achieved in only 40% of the patients within the 5-15 min interval. Correlation between the two devices was stronger when Q-NRG® was used in canopy than in face mask mode, with Pearson coefficients of 0.96 and 0.86, respectively. Compared to Quark RMR® in canopy mode, systematic bias±1.96∗SD with Q-NRG® was -14 ± 236 kcal/day in canopy and 73 ± 484 kcal/day in face mask mode. Q-NRG® in face mask mode overestimated REE by 150 ± 51 kcal/day in men compared to Quark RMR® in canopy mode. CONCLUSIONS: Q-NRG® in canopy mode made it possible to save at least 5 min compared to Quark RMR® while maintaining the same measurement precision. However, its use in face mask mode could lead to REE overestimation in men and, therefore, should not be recommended in the clinical setting. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov no. NCT03947294.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring body composition and changes in energy expenditure during maturation and growth is significant, as many components can influence body structure in adulthood. In the case of young players, when these changes can influence their strength and power, it seems to be equally important. Our aim was to examine whether resting energy expenditure (REE) and body composition would change after 10 months from baseline in physically active children and adolescents. METHODS: We obtained data from 80 children and adolescents aged 9 to 17 years at two measurement points: the baseline in September 2018 and after 10 months in July 2019. The study was carried out using a calorimeter (Fitmate MED, Cosmed, Rome, Italy), a device used to assess body composition using by the electrical bioimpedance method by means of a segment analyzer (TANITA MC-980). The Student's t-test and linear regression analysis were used. Using the stepwise forward regression procedure, the selection of factors in a statistically significant way that describes the level of REE was made. RESULTS: We noticed that REE was not significantly different between baseline (1596.94 ± 273.01 kcal) and after 10 months (1625.38 ± 253.26 kcal). When analyzing the difference in REE between studies girls, we found body height as a significant predictor. The results of our study show a negative relationship between growth and REE. Differences between sexes and age in REE between baseline and after 10 months were not significant. CONCLUSIONS: Our study involving physically active children and adolescents, which used repeated objective measures and longitudinal statistical modeling to analyze them, was unable to demonstrate any interaction between body weight change, body composition measurements, and REE.

BACKGROUND: The 24-h rest and activity behaviors (i.e., physical activity, sedentary behaviors and sleep) are fundamental human behaviors essential to health and well-being. Functional principal component analysis (fPCA) is a flexible approach for characterizing rest-activity rhythms and does not rely on a priori assumptions about the activity shape. The objective of our study is to apply fPCA to a nationally representative sample of American adults to characterize variations in the 24-h rest-activity pattern, determine how the pattern differs according to demographic, socioeconomic and work characteristics, and examine its associations with general health status. METHODS: The current analysis used data from adults 25 or older in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2011-2014). Using 7-day 24-h actigraphy recordings, we applied fPCA to derive profiles for overall, weekday and weekend rest-activity patterns. We examined the association between each rest-activity profile in relation to age, gender, race/ethnicity, education, income and working status using multiple linear regression. We also used multiple logistic regression to determine the relationship between each rest-activity profile and the likelihood of reporting poor or fair health. RESULTS: We identified four distinct profiles (i.e., high amplitude, early rise, prolonged activity window, biphasic pattern) that together accounted for 86.8% of total variation in the study sample. We identified numerous associations between each rest-activity profile and multiple sociodemographic characteristics. We also found evidence suggesting the associations differed between weekdays and weekends. Finally, we reported that the rest-activity profiles were associated with self-rated health. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provided evidence suggesting that rest-activity patterns in human populations are shaped by multiple demographic, socioeconomic and work factors, and are correlated with health status.

Energy Expenditure (EE) (kcal/day), a key element to guide obesity treatment, is measured from CO2 production, VCO2 (mL/min), and/or O2 consumption, VO2 (mL/min). Current technologies are limited due to the requirement of wearable facial accessories. A novel system, the Smart Pad, which measures EE via VCO2 from a room's ambient CO2 concentration transients was evaluated. Resting EE (REE) and exercise VCO2 measurements were recorded using Smart Pad and a reference instrument to study measurement duration's influence on accuracy. The Smart Pad displayed 90% accuracy (±1 SD) for 14-19 min of REE measurement and for 4.8-7.0 min of exercise, using known room's air exchange rate. Additionally, the Smart Pad was validated measuring subjects with a wide range of body mass indexes (BMI = 18.8 to 31.4 kg/m2), successfully validating the system accuracy across REE's measures of ~1200 to ~3000 kcal/day. Furthermore, high correlation between subjects' VCO2 and λ for CO2 accumulation was observed (p < 0.00001, R = 0.785) in a 14.0 m3 sized room. This finding led to development of a new model for REE measurement from ambient CO2 without λ calibration using a reference instrument. The model correlated in nearly 100% agreement with reference instrument measures (y = 1.06x, R = 0.937) using an independent dataset (N = 56).

State modeling of whole-brain electroencephalography (EEG) or magnetoencephalography (MEG) allows to investigate transient, recurring neurodynamical events. Two widely-used techniques are the microstate analysis of EEG signals and hidden Markov modeling (HMM) of MEG power envelopes. Both reportedly lead to similar state lifetimes on the 100 ms timescale, suggesting a common neural basis. To investigate whether microstates and power envelope HMM states describe the same neural dynamics, we used simultaneous MEG/EEG recordings at rest and compared the spatial signature and temporal activation dynamics of microstates and power envelope HMM states obtained separately from EEG and MEG. Results showed that microstates and power envelope HMM states differ both spatially and temporally. Microstates reflect sharp events of neural synchronization, whereas power envelope HMM states disclose network-level activity with 100-200 ms lifetimes. Further, MEG microstates do not correspond to the canonical EEG microstates but are better interpreted as split HMM states. On the other hand, both MEG and EEG HMM states involve the (de)activation of similar functional networks. Microstate analysis and power envelope HMM thus appear sensitive to neural events occurring over different spatial and temporal scales. As such, they represent complementary approaches to explore the fast, sub-second scale bursting electrophysiological dynamics in spontaneous human brain activity.

OBJECTIVE: Investigate whether resuming physical activity (PA) at 72 hours post concussion is safe and reduces symptoms at 2 weeks, compared with resting until asymptomatic. METHODS: Real-life conditions, multicentre, single-blinded randomised clinical trial, conducted in three Canadian paediatric emergency departments (ED). Children/youth aged 10-<18 years with acute concussion were recruited between March 2017 and December 2019, and randomly assigned to a 4-week stepwise return-to-PA protocol at 72 hours post concussion even if symptomatic (experimental group (EG)) or to a return-to-PA once asymptomatic protocol (control group (CG)). The primary outcome was self-reported symptoms at 2 weeks using the Health and Behaviour Inventory. Adherence was measured using accelerometers worn 24 hours/day for 14 days post injury. Adverse events (AE) (worsening of symptoms requiring unscheduled ED or primary care visit) were monitored. Multivariable intention-to-treat (ITT) and per-protocol analyses adjusting for prognostically important covariates were examined. Missing data were imputed for the ITT analysis. RESULTS: 456 randomised participants (EG: N=227; mean (SD) age=13.3 (2.1) years; 44.5% women; CG: N=229; mean (SD) age=13.3 (2.2) years; 43.7% women) were analysed. No AE were identified. ITT analysis showed no strong evidence of a group difference at 2 weeks (adjusted mean difference=-1.3 (95% CI:-3.6 to 1.1)). In adherent participants, initiating PA 72 hours post injury significantly reduced symptoms 2 weeks post injury, compared with rest (adjusted mean difference=-4.3 (95% CI:-8.4 to -0.2)). CONCLUSION: Symptoms at 2 weeks did not differ significantly between children/youth randomised to initiate PA 72 hours post injury versus resting until asymptomatic; however, many were non-adherent to the intervention. Among adherent participants, early PA was associated with reduced symptoms at 2 weeks. Resumption of PA is safe and may be associated with milder symptoms at 2 weeks. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 1b. OBJECTIVE: This study develops a biomedical ultrasound imaging method to infer microstructural information (i.e., tissue level) from imaging mechanical behavior of skeletal muscle (i.e., organ level). METHODS: We first reviewed the constitutive model of skeletal muscle by regarding it as a transversely isotropic (TI) hyperelastic composite material, for which a theoretical formula was established among shear wave speed, deformation, and material parameters (MPs) using the acoustoelasticity theory. The formula was evaluated by finite element (FE) simulations and experimentally examined using ultrasound shear wave imaging (SWI) and strain imaging (SI) on in vivo passive biceps brachii muscles of two healthy volunteers. The imaging sequence included 1) generation of SW in multiple propagation directions while resting the muscle at an elbow angle of 90°; 2) generation of SW propagating along the myofiber direction during continuous uniaxial muscle extension by passively changing the elbow angle from 90° to 120°. Ultrasound-quantified SW speeds and muscle deformations were fitted by the theoretical formula to estimate MPs of in vivo passive muscle. RESULTS: Estimated myofiber stiffness, stiffness ratio of myofiber to extracellular matrix (ECM), and ECM volume ratio all agreed with literature findings. CONCLUSION: The proposed mathematical formula together with our in-house ultrasound imaging method enabled assessment of microstructural material properties of in vivo passive skeletal muscle from organ-level mechanical behavior in an entirely noninvasive way. SIGNIFICANCE: Noninvasive assessment of both micro and macro properties of in vivo skeletal muscle will advance our understanding of complex muscle dynamics and facilitate treatment and rehabilitation planning.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate assessment of resting energy expenditure (REE) can guide optimal nutritional prescription in critically ill children. Indirect calorimetry (IC) is the gold standard for REE measurement, but its use is limited. Alternatively, REE estimates by predictive equations/formulae are often inaccurate. Recently, predicting REE with artificial neural networks (ANN) was found to be accurate in healthy children. We aimed to investigate the role of ANN in predicting REE in critically ill children and to compare the accuracy with common equations/formulae. STUDY METHODS: We enrolled 257 critically ill children. Nutritional status/vital signs/biochemical values were recorded. We used IC to measure REE. Commonly employed equations/formulae and the VCO2-based Mehta equation were estimated. ANN analysis to predict REE was conducted, employing the TWIST system. RESULTS: ANN considered demographic/anthropometric data to model REE. The predictive model was good (accuracy 75.6%; R2 = 0.71) but not better than Talbot tables for weight. After adding vital signs/biochemical values, the model became superior to all equations/formulae (accuracy 82.3%, R2 = 0.80) and comparable to the Mehta equation. Including IC-measured VCO2 increased the accuracy to 89.6%, superior to the Mehta equation. CONCLUSIONS: We described the accuracy of REE prediction using models that include demographic/anthropometric/clinical/metabolic variables. ANN may represent a reliable option for REE estimation, overcoming the inaccuracies of traditional predictive equations/formulae.

The free energy principle, an influential framework in computational neuroscience and theoretical neurobiology, starts from the assumption that living systems ensure adaptive exchanges with their environment by minimizing the objective function of variational free energy. Following this premise, it claims to deliver a promising integration of the life sciences. In recent work, Markov blankets, one of the central constructs of the free energy principle, have been applied to resolve debates central to philosophy (such as demarcating the boundaries of the mind). The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we trace the development of Markov blankets starting from their standard application in Bayesian networks, via variational inference, to their use in the literature on active inference. We then identify a persistent confusion in the literature between the formal use of Markov blankets as an epistemic tool for Bayesian inference, and their novel metaphysical use in the free energy framework to demarcate the physical boundary between an agent and its environment. Consequently, we propose to distinguish between "Pearl blankets" to refer to the original epistemic use of Markov blankets and "Friston blankets" to refer to the new metaphysical construct. Second, we use this distinction to critically assess claims resting on the application of Markov blankets to philosophical problems. We suggest that this literature would do well in differentiating between two different research programmes: "inference with a model" and "inference within a model." Only the latter is capable of doing metaphysical work with Markov blankets, but requires additional philosophical premises and cannot be justified by an appeal to the success of the mathematical framework alone.

BACKGROUND: An accurate estimation of athletes' energy needs is crucial in diet planning to improve sport performance and to maintain an appropriate body composition. This study aimed to develop and validate in elite athletes new equations for estimating resting energy expenditure (REE) based on anthropometric parameters as well as bioimpedance analysis (BIA)-derived raw variables and to validate the accuracy of selected predictive equations. METHODS: Adult elite athletes aged 18-40 yrs were studied. Anthropometry, indirect calorimetry and BIA were performed in all subjects. The new predictive equations were generated using different regression models. The accuracy of the new equations was assessed at the group level (bias) and at the individual level (precision accuracy), and then compared with the one of five equations used in the general population or three athletes-specific formulas. RESULTS: One-hundred and twenty-six male athletes (age 26.9 ± 9.1 yrs; weight 71.3 ± 10.9 kg; BMI 22.8 ± 2.7 kg/m2) from different sport specialties were randomly assigned to the calibration (n = 75) or validation group (n = 51). REE was directly correlated with individual characteristics, except for age, and raw BIA variables. Most of the equations from the literature were reasonably accurate at the population level (bias within ±5%). The new equations showed a mean bias -0.3% (Eq. A based on anthropometric parameters) and -0.6% (Eq. B based on BIA-derived raw variables). Precision accuracy (individual predicted-measured differences within ±5%) was ~75% in six out of eight of the selected equations and even higher for Eq. A (82.4%) and Eq. B (92.2%). CONCLUSION: In elite athletes, BIA-derived phase angle is a significant predictor of REE. The new equations have a very good prediction accuracy at both group and individual levels. The use of phase angle as predictor of REE requires further research with respect to different sport specialties, training programs and training level.

OBJECTIVE: Several predictive equations have been used to estimate patients' energy expenditure. The study aimed to describe the characteristics of resting energy expenditure (REE) in patients undergoing mechanical ventilation during early postoperative stage after cardiac surgery and evaluate the validity of 9 REE predictive equations. METHODS: This was a prospective observational study. Patients aged 18-80 years old, undergone open-heart surgery, were enrolled between January 2017 and 2018. The measured REE (mREE) was evaluated via indirect calorimetry (IC). The predictive resting energy expenditure (pREE) was suggested by 9 predictive equations, including Harris-Benedict (HB), HB coefficient method, Ireton-Jones, Owen, Mifflin, Liu, 25 × body weight (BW), 30 × BW, and 35 × BW. The association between mREE and pREE was assessed by Pearson's correlation, paired t test, Bland-Altman method, and the limits of agreement (LOA). RESULTS: mREE was related to gender, BMI, age, and body temperature. mREE was significantly correlated with pREE, as calculated by 9 equations (all p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between pREE and mREE, as calculated by 30 × BW kcal/kg/day (t = 0.782, p = 0.435), while significant differences were noted between mREE and pREE calculated by other equations (all p < 0.05). Taking the 30 × BW equation as a suitable candidate, most of the data points were within LOA, and the percentage was 95.6% (129/135). Considering the rationality of clinical use, accurate predictions (%) were calculated, and only 40.74% was acceptable. CONCLUSIONS: The 30 × BW equation is relatively acceptable for estimating REE in 9 predictive equations in the early stage after heart surgery. However, the IC method should be the first choice if it is feasible.

RESUMEN: Es reconocido que un incremento de la grasa corporal subcutánea es capaz de alterar el patrón de liberación de calor a través de la piel. Sin embargo, la asociación con otras variables antropométricas y la influencia del gasto energético en reposo (GER), han sido escasamente abordadas. Este estudio determinó la relación de la temperatura de la piel con variables antropométricas, peso corporal y GER de hombres adultos sanos. Participaron en el estudio un total de 24 varones sanos de 33,9±8,7 años de edad, 85,8±9,7 kg de peso corporal, 172,5±6,1 cm de estatura y 28,9±3,4 kg/m2 de índice de masa corporal (IMC). Se realizaron evaluaciones antropométricas, de termografía por infrarrojo y del GER por calorimetría indirecta, con analizador de gases. La temperatura promedio de los 6-pliegues, y las individuales (toracoabdominales, supra-espinal y abdominal), tuvieron correlaciones negativas con el IMC, perímetro de cintura, índice cintura cadera, índice cintura estatura, y la sumatoria de 6 pliegues; todos con p<0,05. Además, la temperatura del pliegue supraespinal tuvo una correlación negativa con el porcentaje de masa adiposa (MA%), r=0,47(p=0,0194). La MA% y el IMC tuvieron correlaciones negativas con el GER, con r=-0,59 (p=0,002) y r=-0,53 (p=0,006), respectivamente. El promedio de temperatura de los 6-pliegues presentó una correlación positiva con el GER (r=0,44; p=0,02). La composición corporal causa una modificación en los patrones de termografía superficial local, sin afectar la relación entre el promedio de la temperatura superficial total con el GER, pudiendo éste ser un factor predictor.


SUMMARY: It is known that an increase in the subcutaneous body fat can alter the pattern of heat release through the skin. However, the relationship with other anthropometric variables and the influence of the Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) have scarcely been addressed. To determine the relationship of skin temperature with different anthropometric variables, body weight, and the REE of healthy adult males. The participants were a total of 24 healthy males of 33.9±8.7 years-old, 85.8±9.7 kg of body mass, 172.5±6.1 cm of height, and 28.9±3.4 kg/m2 of body mass index (BMI). Anthropometric, infrared thermography, and indirect calorimetry REE assessments were performed with gas analyzer. The six skinfolds average temperature, as well as the individual skinfolds (thoracoabdominal, supraspinal, and abdominal), had negative correlations with the BMI, waist circumference, waist- hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, and the sum of the six skinfolds, all with p<0.05. In addition, the temperature of the supraspinal fold had a negative correlation with the percentage of fat mass (MA%), r=0.47 (p=0.0194). MA% and BMI had negative correlations with REE, with r=-0.59 (p=0.002) and r=-0.53 (p=0.006), respectively. The six-skinfolds average temperature presented a positive correlation with the REE (r=0.44; p=0.02). Body composition changes cause a modification in the local surface thermography patterns without affecting the relationship between the average total body surface temperature with the REE; therefore, this could act as a predictive factor.

While corticosterone (CORT) is often suggested to be an important hormone regulating processes necessary for avian migration, there has been no systematic assessment of CORT's role in migration. Prior to migration, birds increase fat stores and flight muscle size to prepare for the high energetic costs associated with long-distance flight. After attaining sufficient energetic stores, birds then make the actual decision to depart from their origin site. Once en route birds alternate between periods of flight and stopovers, during which they rest and refuel for their next bouts of endurance flight. Here, we evaluate three non-mutually exclusive hypotheses that have been proposed in the literature for CORT's role in migration. (1) CORT facilitates physiological preparations for migration [e.g. hyperphagia, fattening, and flight muscle hypertrophy]. (2) CORT stimulates departure from origin or stopover sites. (3) CORT supports sustained migratory travel. After examining the literature to test predictions stemming from each of these three hypotheses, we found weak support for a role of CORT in physiological preparation for migration. However, we found moderate support for a role of CORT in stimulating departures, as CORT increases immediately prior to departure and is higher when migratory restlessness is displayed. We also found moderate support for the hypothesis that CORT helps maintain sustained travel, as CORT is generally higher during periods of flight, though few studies have tested this hypothesis. We provide recommendations for future studies that would help to further resolve the role of CORT in migration.
