RESUMO

The PeriFlux 6000 EPOS system combines diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) for the assessment of oxygen saturation (expressed in percentage), red blood cell (RBC) tissue fraction (expressed as volume fraction, %RBC), and perfusion (%RBC × mm / s) in the microcirculation. It also allows the possibility of separating the perfusion into three speed regions (0 to 1, 1 to 10, and >10 mm / s). We evaluate the speed-resolved perfusion components, i.e., the relative amount of perfusion within each speed region, using a blood-flow phantom. Human blood was pumped through microtubes with an inner diameter of 0.15 mm. Measured DRS and LDF spectra were compared to Monte Carlo-simulated spectra in an optimization routine, giving the best-fit parameters describing the measured spectra. The root-mean-square error for each of the three speed components (0 to 1, 1 to 10, and >10 mm / s, respectively) when describing the blood-flow speed in the microtubes was 2.9%, 8.1%, and 7.7%. The presented results show that the system can accurately discriminate blood perfusion originating from different blood-flow speeds, which may enable improved measurement of healthy and dysfunctional microcirculatory flow.

A low-cost optical sensor using an immobilized chromogenic redox reagent was devised for measuring the total antioxidant level in a liquid sample without requiring sample pretreatment. The reagent, copper(II)-neocuproine (Cu(II)-Nc) complex, was immobilized onto a cation-exchanger film of Nafion, and the absorbance changes associated with the formation of the highly colored Cu(I)-Nc chelate as a result of reaction with antioxidants was measured at 450 nm. The sensor gave a linear response over a wide concentration range of standard antioxidant compounds. The trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) values of various antioxidants reported in this work using the optical sensor-based "cupric reducing antioxidant capacity" (CUPRAC) assay were comparable to those of the standard solution-based CUPRAC assay, showing that the immobilized Cu(II)-Nc reagent retained its reactivity toward antioxidants. Common food ingredients like oxalate, citrate, fruit acids, and reducing sugars did not interfere with the proposed sensing method. This assay was validated through linearity, additivity, precision, and recovery, demonstrating that the assay is reliable and robust. The developed optical sensor was used to screen total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of some commercial fruit juices without preliminary treatment and showed a promising potential for the preparation of antioxidant inventories of a wide range of food plants.

RESUMO

A preliminary survey of the mirrors available to residents was conducted in 10 long-term care homes. The framework underlying the study was Lawton's theory that the planned environment functions to maintain, support, and stimulate. The findings were discouraging. Some facilities had no mirrors available for bedbound residents or wheelchair users. In most facilities, a resident could not view his or her lower body in a mirror. The majority of mirrors were obstructed from view. This pilot study suggests a need for future mirror research. Implications for nursing are discussed, and placement of mirrors is described.
