En este ensayo nos proponemos compartir una serie de reflexiones sobre las condiciones existentes para la publicación de artículos académicos en Colombia. En particular nos interesa ofrecer elementos para el debate sobre la política de indexación de revistas académicas que ha definido el Departamento Administrativode Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación para Colombia (Colciencias) por medio de su Sistema Nacional de Indexación y Homologación de Revistas Especializadas de CT+I Colombia (Publindex). En el ensayo destacamos algunas consecuencias de tal modelo, sustentado en la confianza y delegación que Colciencias tiene en un modelo de indexación establecido por dos empresas privadas y con ánimo de lucro: Thomson Reuters (Isi)™ y Scopus Elsevier™. Saber, manipulación y poder. la universidad como institución social / Knowledge, manipulation, and power: the university as a social institution

El texto es una reflexión sobre la universidad como institución social, realizada a partir de varios estudios desarrollados en cuyos hallazgos se evidencia, en primer lugar, el interés de algunas estancias por convertirla en un escenario de manipulación y control, reduciéndola a la racionalidad de los organismos funcionales, frente ala dinámica propia que la universidad instaura como institución social cuya base se moviliza desde las significaciones imaginarias sociales. En este proceso, se muestra desde la lógica de la teoría de los imaginarios sociales, la forma como la universidad se configura e institucionaliza en una tensión constante, entre el sabery el control, entre la función y la institución y se dan las bases que la definen y posicionan como institución imaginaria social.

The text is a reflection on the University as a social institution, based on severalstudies developed on whose findings are made evident, firstly, the interest of some stances by turning it into a scenario of manipulation and control, by reducing it to the rationality of the functional agencies, against the very dynamic that the University establishes as a social institution whose base is mobilized from the social imaginary significations. In this process, it is shown from the logic of thetheory of the social imaginary, the manner how the University is configured and institutionalized at a constant pressure, between knowledge and control, between function and institution, and the foundations, which define it and position it as a social imaginary institution are defined.

El presente texto, recoge las discusiones y reflexiones derivadas de variasinvestigaciones en las que se describe, analiza y evidencia la participación de los actores que conforman la actual sociedad de la información como constantes de la educación superior en México, los paliativos que de ella se emanan, la transmisión de información y los procesos de formación actuales, el desafío de construir signos y símbolos cuando las señales ya no son controladas por el dispositivo pedagógico tradicional lo que exige, en un contexto cambiante, que la educación superior no sea más un interior autosuficiente, posibilitando la producción de subjetividades por las clases disciplinares y de control, legitimadas por medio de viejas y nuevas tecnologías.

The present text, includes discussions and reflections derived from several studies in which the participation of the actors that make up the current information society as constants of higher education in Mexico are described, analyzed, and madeevident, as well as the palliatives emanating from it, transmission of information and the current training processes, the challenge of building signs and symbols when the signals are no longer controlled by the traditional pedagogical device, which requires, in a changing context, that higher education is no longer a selfsufficient interior, making the production of subjectivity possible by the disciplinary and control classes, legitimized by means of old and new technologies.

Concurrent multiple health risk behaviors among adolescents in Luangnamtha province, Lao PDR.

BACKGROUND: Multiple health risk behaviors (HRBs) among adolescents pose a threat to their health, including HIV/AIDS. Health risk behaviors such as alcohol use, smoking, substance use, and sexual risk behaviors among youth have been shown to co-occur with each others. The objectives of this study was to estimate the prevalence of single and concurrent health risk behaviors and to explore how health risk behavior is associated with socio-demographic factors and peers' behaviors. METHODS: A cross sectional design was used to examine health risk behaviors of adolescents between the age 14 and 19 years living in the Luangnamtha province, Lao PDR. The study was conducted between June and August, 2008. An ordinal logistic regression model that simultaneously explored demographic factors and the influence of the behavior of peers on three categories of multiple HRBs (no risk, one risk, and two or more health risk behaviors) was performed. RESULTS: A total of 1360 respondents, 669 (49.1%) boys with mean age 16.7 ± 1.6 and 699 (50.9%) girls aged 16.1 ± 1.5 were recruited into the study. The majority reported two or fewer risk behaviors. However, multiple risk behaviors increased with age for both sexes. About 46.8% (n = 637) reported no risk, 39.3 percent (n = 535) reported one risk, 8.1 percent (n = 110) reported two risks, and 5.8 percent reported more than two health risk behaviors.The protective factors among boys were school attendance (OR = .53, CI = .33-.86), being Hmong and Yao ethnicity (OR = .48, CI-.26-.90), while being above the age of 15 (OR = 2.20, 95% CI = 1.33-3.60), Akha ethnicity (OR = 2.20, 95% CI = 1.04-4.61), peer's smoking (OR = 3.11, 95% CI = 2.1-4.6), and peer's drinking alcohol (OR = 1.88, 95% CI = 1.1-3.21) were significantly associated with the presence of multiple risk behaviors among boys.Having some education (OR = 0.17, 95% CI = 0.06-0.45), and being of Hmong and Yao ethnicity (OR = 0.38, 95% CI = 0.18-0.80) were factors that protected girls from multiple risk behaviors; while peer's drinking alcohol (OR = 2.55, 95% CI = 1.59-4.09) and peer's being sexually active (OR = 2.82, 95% CI = 1.65-4.8) were significantly associated with the presence of multiple risk behaviors among girls. CONCLUSION: There are sex, age and ethnic differences in the concurrent health risk behaviors. The influencing factors are adolescent's education and peer influence. Interventions should focus to encourage adolescents to complete the compulsory primary education as well as help them to establish friendships and follow peers with good behavior. Risk reduction messages need to take account of diverse multiple HRBs within the specific socio-cultural and gender specific context and target vulnerable adolescents such as ethnic minorities and less educated adolescents.

La educación en Bolivia: indicadores, cifras y resultados / The education in Bolivia: indicators, figures, and results

El presente trabajo no pretende ser un diagnóstico de la educación boliviana; sin embargo, ofrece valioso material para su elaboración, lo que permitió, a su vez, coadyuvar a la formulación de políticas educativas. En este sentido se espera que este documento sirva de insumo a la discusión de la problemática educativa en la medida en que puedan sustentarse en información estadística actualizada y confiable.

Refining the association between education and health: the effects of quantity, credential, and selectivity.

We refine the established association between education and health by distinguishing three aspects of a person's education (quantity, credential, and selectivity) and by examining the mechanisms through which they may correlate with health. Data are from the 1995 Aging, Status, and the Sense of Control Survey, a representative U.S. national telephone survey of 2,593 respondents aged 18 to 95, with an oversample of elderly. Results show that physical functioning and perceived health increase significantly with years of formal education and with college selectivity for those with a bachelor's or higher degree, adjusting for age, sex, race, marital status, and parental education. The credential of a college degree has no net association with physical functioning and perceived health beyond the amount attributable to the additional years of schooling. Of the three aspects of education, years of schooling has the largest effect. Most of that association appears attributable to its correlation with work and economic conditions, social psychological resources, and health lifestyle. A large portion of the net association of college selectivity with physical functioning and perceived health appears attributable to health lifestyle.

Social profile of first-year dentistry students at the University of Sydney.

There has been constant interest in the background of dentistry students over the years. This paper, based on the data amassed by surveying the first-year dentistry students of 1994 and 1995, builds on previous questionnaires and publications, and shows that certain trends in student make-up, predicted earlier, have been checked. The article examines such features as the gender breakdown of first-year students, age at the end of their first year, their own and their parents' countries of origin, English and non-English language proficiency, type of school attended, parents' occupations, parents' highest level of education, motivations for choosing dentistry as a career, aptitude for a career in dentistry, and previous studies and employment. The data are analysed with the view to determining changes over time in the social composition of dentistry students.
