OBJECTIVES: This study focuses on analyzing the impact of innovative human resource management practices (IHRMP) on knowledge worker burnout, and how organizational support and employee effort help explain this relationship in the context of the business services sector. To explore the problem, investigated whether IHRMP have a significant negative impact on employee burnout, and organizational support and employee effort mediate the negative impact of IHRMP on employee burnout. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A survey was conducted, collected using the computer assisted web interview method on 1000 knowledge workers employed at business services sector (BSS) organizations in Poland. The quantitative results obtained were analyzed using AMOS software to test the main statistical relationships and through structural equation modeling. RESULTS: The study outlines direct and indirect mechanisms to counteract perceived burnout among knowledge workers. The article contributes to the understanding of how IHRMP reduce burnout among knowledge workers and highlights the central importance of organizational support and employee effort as mediating factors against burnout in the context of high-skill, high-intensity work. CONCLUSIONS: The expected results in terms of application provide a proposal of measures for managers' consideration that can be implemented in the organization with a view to counteracting the incidence of burnout among BSS employees. PURPOSE: Our goal was to explore the current trends in burnout, career choice regret, and well-being needs among urology residents and fellows, with specific emphasis on identifying key factors associated with burnout. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The AUA Workforce Workgroup collaborated with the AUA Data Team to analyze data from the 2021 AUA Census, comprising a total of 243 residents and fellows. Key demographics, benefits and resources, career choice and debt, and burnout levels were analyzed, focusing on variables like gender, PGY (postgraduate year) level, debt burden, and personal health appointments. RESULTS: Overall, 48% of residents and 33% of fellows met criteria for professional burnout, with a higher incidence among PGY-2 residents (70%). Depersonalization was particularly notable, with 74% of residents reporting medium to high levels. Burnout was significantly associated with difficulty attending personal health appointments (52% vs 34%) and lack of access to on-call rooms (54% vs 36%). In contrast, having children during residency was associated with lower burnout levels (30.8% vs 49.1%). Meal plans were ranked as the most desired benefit (32%), followed by ability to attend health appointments during work hours (17%) and paid family leave (16%). Educational debt over $150,000 was carried by 53% of residents and 48% of fellows. Interestingly, burnout rates showed no statistically significant difference in response rates across genders, relationship status, amount of educational debt, presence of paid maternity or paternity leave, and type of childcare arrangements. CONCLUSIONS: Burnout remains a significant issue among urology trainees, with a complex interplay of factors like lack of personal time and provision of call rooms. The alarming rates of depersonalization and exhaustion highlight the urgency of implementing targeted interventions. Enhanced support systems, improved access to health care appointments, provision of call rooms, and debt management programs are recommended to alleviate the growing problem of professional burnout in the field of urology.

BACKGROUND: Despite acknowledging the detrimental impact of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) exposure on the mental and physical well-being of investigators and forensic examiners, there is a need for comprehensive exploration into the complex relationship between CSAM exposure, its various dimensions, mental health (i.e., anxiety, depression, and PTSD), and burnout, as well as the presence of positive attitudes towards the job. OBJECTIVE: To understand how CSAM exposure, mental health and burnout interconnect and cluster within distinct networks of police investigators and forensic examiners. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Police investigators and forensic examiners from across the United States who were exposed to CSAM as part of their professions (N = 470). METHODS: Participants, recruited through connections with the National Criminal Justice Training Center, completed an anonymous online survey. RESULTS: The network analysis revealed differences in centrality between investigators and forensic examiners, particularly in their associations with exposure factors and mental health variables. Edges invariance tests showed differences in the strength of these associations, with some factors being more strongly linked to PTSD avoidance symptoms among investigators and others among forensic examiners. Stability analyses suggested potentially greater heterogeneity among investigators, while both groups displayed high stability in other centrality indices. CONCLUSIONS: This study contributes to our comprehension of the distinct experiences and challenges faced by CSAM investigators and forensic examiners, and specifically the nuanced disparities between CSAM investigators and forensic examiners in terms of their exposure to CSAM content and the associated mental health factors. These insights highlight the imperative need for tailored support mechanisms and interventions that can effectively address the unique challenges encountered by individuals working tirelessly in this critical field.

The COVID-19 pandemic has spotlighted the mental health crisis among employees worldwide. However, burnout research is often industry- or occupation-specific, and limited knowledge currently exists on the prevalence of burnout in the general working population of Southeast Asia. This study aims to examine the prevalence of employee burnout and its associated factors among working adults in Southeast Asia using secondary data. 4,338 full-time employees aged 18-65 years old living in Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, and Indonesia were assessed for burnout, depression, anxiety, stress, and sociodemographic characteristics as part of an online public health assessment in October 2022. The prevalence of burnout in the region was 62.91%. Burnout was highest among employees in the Philippines (70.71%) and lowest in Malaysia (58.13%). Experiencing burnout was associated with severe or extremely severe depression (AOR = 6.48 [95% CI = 5.06-8.33]), anxiety (AOR = 2.22 [1.74-2.85]), and stress (AOR = 5.51 [4.13-7.39]). Working more than 50 hours a week (AOR = 1.38 [1.04-1.82]) and being very dissatisfied with the job led to higher odds of burnout (AOR = 16.46 [8.99-30.53]). Alarmingly, more than half of working adults in the region are reporting increased levels of burnout, and improving employee mental health and work conditions may be key to improving employee burnout in the region. Findings contribute to existing research on burnout prevalence in the region and provide more comprehensive insights into understanding the factors driving employee burnout in the working population of Southeast Asia 2 years after the onset of the pandemic.

Objectives. This study aimed to map the evidence on burnout syndrome in higher education teachers and its relationship with ergonomic and biopsychosocial factors. Methods. We performed a scoping review of articles published up to 2021, extracting the location, study design, sample characteristics and assessment methods, and investigated ergonomic and biopsychosocial factors. Results. Eighteen studies were found in 12 countries, and most used a cross-sectional design (n = 17/18, 94%). The Maslach burnout inventory was the most used assessment method (n = 9, 50%). There is a consensus that burnout syndrome in higher education teachers requires more attention, as it can be related to physical, mental and social factors. Conclusions. In the professional environment, physical ergonomic characteristics or those related to work organization deserve greater attention, as well as psychosocial factors, as they are strongly associated with burnout syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Emergency Medical Service (EMS) clinicians experience high levels of occupational stress due to long hours, short staffing, and patient deaths, among other factors. While gender has been partially examined, little is known regarding the role of empathy on occupational stress and mental health (MH) outcomes among EMS clinicians. Therefore, the current study examines the moderating role of empathy and, separately, gender on associations between occupational stress and mental health. METHODS: A cross-sectional examination of EMS clinician occupational and personal wellbeing was conducted via an anonymous, electronic survey. Information on clinician demographics, and validated measures of occupational stress, burnout, and MH outcomes were collected. Empathy was assessed using the Toronto Empathy Scale (TEQ). Descriptive/bivariate statistics were conducted for variables of interest. Separate multivariable regression models evaluated associations between occupational stress and mental health outcomes. Empathy and gender were examined as potential moderators using interactions. RESULTS: A total of 568 EMS clinicians completed the survey. High levels of mental health difficulties were reported (34.0% anxiety, 29.2% depression, 48.6% burnout). Increased occupational stress was associated with increased anxiety (OR =1.08, 95% CI 1.05-1.10), depression (OR = 1.09, 95% CI 1.06-1.10), and burnout (OR = 1.10, 95% CI 1.07-1.12). No moderation analyses were significant. Greater resilience was associated with lower depression, anxiety, and burnout. CONCLUSION: EMS clinicians, much like other first responders, experience considerable occupational stress, of which is associated with mental health difficulties and burnout. Findings underscore the need for intervention programs aimed at reducing the impact of occupational stress and the promotion of resilience. Continuing to understand the full scope of EMS mental health, including the role of resilience, is imperative, particularly in light of future public emergencies.

PURPOSE: Burnout is described as a state of mental exhaustion caused by one's professional life and is characterised by three domains: emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and a reduced sense of accomplishment. The prevalence of stress is high amongst doctors and varies by specialty, gender, trainee level, and socioeconomic status. The authors set out to examine the scale of the problem, as well as to determine the influence of both socioeconomic status and chosen training programme on burnout amongst postgraduate trainees. This would identify at-risk groups and aid in future targeted interventions. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were obtained, following approval from the General Medical Council, from The National Training Survey, completed annually by all trainees in the United Kingdom. Data were then anonymised and analysed. Burnout scores were derived from the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory and are positively framed (higher scores equal lower burnout). RESULTS: The questionnaire was completed by 63 122 participants from 2019 to 2020. Mean burnout amongst all trainees was 52.4 (SD = 19.3). Burnout scores from the most deprived quintile was significantly lower compared with those from the least deprived quintile: 51.0 (SD = 20.6) versus 52.9 (SD = 18.9), respectively (P < 0.001). The highest levels of burnout were reported in Internal Medical Training, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Core Surgical Training, respectively. CONCLUSION: Postgraduates from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to encounter burnout during training. At-risk groups who may also benefit from targeted intervention have been identified, requiring further examination through future studies.

BACKGROUND: This study presents the prevalence of burnout among the Canadian public health workforce after three years of the COVID-19 pandemic and its association with work-related factors. METHODS: Data were collected using an online survey distributed through Canadian public health associations and professional networks between November 2022 and January 2023. Burnout was measured using a modified version of the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI). Logistic regressions were used to model the relationship between burnout and work-related factors including years of work experience, redeployment to pandemic response, workplace safety and supports, and harassment. Burnout and the intention to leave or retire as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic was explored using multinomial logistic regressions. RESULTS: In 2,079 participants who completed the OLBI, the prevalence of burnout was 78.7%. Additionally, 49.1% of participants reported being harassed because of their work during the pandemic. Burnout was positively associated with years of work experience, redeployment to the pandemic response, being harassed during the pandemic, feeling unsafe in the workplace and not being offered workplace supports. Furthermore, burnout was associated with greater odds of intending to leave public health or retire earlier than anticipated. CONCLUSION: The high levels of burnout among our large sample of Canadian public health workers and its association with work-related factors suggest that public health organizations should consider interventions that mitigate burnout and promote recovery.

INTRODUCTION: Palliative care physicians (Pcps) face special challenges caring for terminally ill patients. We conducted this study to evaluate the burnout (bo) prevalence among pcps and sought to identify risk as well as protective factors as a basis for the development of preventive measures. METHODS: Participants (Pcs) were invited via e-mail to complete an online survey between May and June 2022. Besides the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory assessing the bo dimensions of exhaustion (exh) and disengagement (dis), sociodemographic data were collected. RESULTS: The study found that 58% (cut-off mean value [M] ≥2.18) or more specifically, 38% (cut-off M ≥2.5) of the pcs showed increased scores in the exh subscale as a key dimension of bo. All dimensions were correlated with the level of medical and palliative care training, with higher scores for physicians in training. Furthermore, pcs without preventive measures like employee appraisals at work were more likely to be considered exhausted, disengaged, or burned out. The discrepancy between high exh and low dis scores shows that the polled pcps, despite feeling exh, nevertheless considered their work meaningful. CONCLUSION: Bo prevalence among pcps exceeds that of the general population and other specialties, whereas inexperienced pcps might be at high risk of shifting from exh to bo and could therefore benefit from tailored support. Further preventive measures including individual and organizational aspects are necessary to prevent bo and promote health among medical staff, thereby preserving quality of patient care. Elementary preventive measures such as employee appraisals can have a protective effect against bo.

OBJECTIVE: This is a final analysis of longitudinal evaluation of burnout and empathy among a cohort of Doctor of Pharmacy students throughout their 4-year enrollment. METHODS: The class of 2021 received sequential Qualtrics (Qualtrics, Provo, UT) surveys containing 2 validated survey instruments, the Jefferson Scale of Empathy and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Surveys were disseminated at the start of the program (PY1start) and the end of each academic year (PY1end, PY2, PY3, PY4). Linear mixed models accounting for repeated measures, Generalized Estimating Equation, and Cochran's Q statistic were used to evaluate longitudinal change in the Jefferson Scale of Empathy and Maslach Burnout Inventory survey scores, categorized subscales, and burnout. RESULTS: Matched survey responses were included for 91 students (85.8% response rate). Across all years, a decrease in empathy and professional efficacy and an increase in exhaustion and cynicism was seen. High categorical levels of exhaustion and cynicism indicated evidence of burnout throughout the program. Year-to-year analysis indicated statistically significant increases in exhaustion and cynicism between PY1start and all subsequent assessments, a decrease in professional efficacy from PY1start to PY1end and PY2, and a decrease in empathy for PY1start to PY1end. CONCLUSION: Students reported trends of decreasing empathy and professional efficacy, with a simultaneous increase in exhaustion and cynicism. Further evaluation of the impact of COVID-19 on these results, as well as additional methods to support overall student wellness, is needed.

OBJECTIVES: Emergency medicine (EM) confers a high risk of burnout that may be exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to determine the longitudinal prevalence of burnout in pediatric EM (PEM) physicians/fellows working in tertiary PEM departments across Canada and its fluctuation during the pandemic. METHODS: A national mixed-methods survey using a validated 2-question proxy for burnout was distributed monthly through 9 months. The primary outcome was the trajectory in probability of burnout, which was examined as both emotional exhaustion (EE) and depersonalization (DP), EE alone, and DP alone. Secondary outcomes investigated burnout and its association with demographic variables. Quantitative data were analyzed using logistic regression for primary outcomes and subanalyses for secondary outcomes. Conventional content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data and generate themes. RESULTS: From February to October 2021, 92 of 98 respondents completed at least 1 survey, 78% completed at least 3 consecutive surveys, and 48% completed at least 6 consecutive surveys. Predicted probability of EE was bimodal with peaks in May (25%) and October (22%) 2021. Rates of DP alone or having both EE and DP were approximately 1% and stable over the study period. Mid-career physicians were at lower risk of EE (odds ratio, 0.02; 95% confidence interval, 0-0.22) compared with early-career physicians. Underlying drivers of burnout were multifaceted. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that increased COVID-19 case burden was correlated with EE levels during the third and fourth waves of the pandemic. Emotional exhaustion was worsened by systemic factors, and interventions must target common themes of unsustainable workloads and overwhelming lack of control.

OBJECTIVE: To assess associations of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and adverse occupational experiences (AOEs) with depression and burnout in US physicians. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of data from a representative sample survey of US physicians conducted between November 20, 2020, and March 23, 2021, and from a probability-based sample of other US workers. The ACEs, AOEs, burnout, and depression were assessed using previously published measures. RESULTS: Analyses included data from 1125 of the 3671 physicians (30.6%) who received a mailed survey and 6235 of 90,000 physicians (6.9%) who received an electronic survey. The proportion of physicians age 29-65 who had lived with a family member with substance misuse during childhood (673 of 5039[13.4%]) was marginally lower (P <.001) than that of workers in other professions (448 of 2505 [17.9%]). The proportion of physicians age 29-65 who experienced childhood emotional abuse (823 of 5038 [16.3%]) was similar to that of workers in other professions (406 of 2508 [16.2%]). The average physician depression T-score was 49.60 (raw score ± SD, 6.48±3.15), similar to the normed US average. The AOEs were associated with mild to severe depression, including making a recent significant medical error (odds ratio [OR], 1.64; 95% CI, 1.33 to 2.02, P<.001), being named in a malpractice suit (OR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.07 to 1.59, P=.008), and experiencing one or more coronavirus disease 2019-related AOEs (OR, 1.76; 95% CI, 1.56 to 1.99, P<.001). Having one or more ACEs was associated with mild to severe depression (OR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.38 to 1.79, P<.001). The ACEs, coronavirus disease 2019-related AOEs, and medical errors were also associated with burnout. CONCLUSION: Assessing ACEs and AOEs and implementing selective primary prevention interventions may improve population health efforts to mitigate depression and burnout in physicians.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal health (MH) providers may experience traumatic events, such as maternal or fetal death, that can contribute to stress and burnout. Past trauma, poor working relationships, and under-resourced environments not only affect providers' own emotional well-being but also reduce their ability to provide respectful maternity care (RMC). METHODS: Data were collected in mid-2021 as a cross-sectional survey with 302 MH providers working in 25 maternities in 3 districts in Malawi to measure burnout, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We present a pathway model describing how these factors interact and influence RMC. We used the provider-reported person-centered maternity care scale to measure RMC; the Maslach Burnout Inventory, which examines emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and professional accomplishment; and standard validated screening tools to measure the prevalence of depression and PTSD. RESULTS: Although levels of burnout varied, 30% of MH providers reported high levels of exhaustion, feelings of cynicism manifesting as depersonalization toward their clients (17%), and low levels of professional accomplishment (42%). Moderate to severe depression (9%) and suicidal ideation within the past 2 weeks (10%) were also recorded. Many (70%) reported experiencing an event that could trigger PTSD, and 12% reported at least 4 of 5 symptoms in the PTSD scale. Path analysis suggests that depression and emotional exhaustion negatively influence RMC, and depersonalization is mediated through depression. PTSD has no direct effect on RMC, but increased PTSD scores were associated with increased burnout and depression scores. Positive relationships with facility managers were significantly associated with increased RMC and decreased emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. CONCLUSION: Burnout will continue to be a challenge among MH providers. However, pragmatic approaches for improving teamwork, psychosocial, and managerial support for MH providers working in challenging environments may help mitigate burnout, improve MH provider well-being, and, in turn, RMC for women seeking MH services.

RESUMO

Throughout the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there have been numerous demands on primary care practices and providers affecting work engagement and burnout, which can affect health-care delivery and patient outcomes. We determined potentially modifiable factors associated with work engagement among employees of federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) throughout Louisiana. Resilient coping, spirituality, and social support were associated with being engaged at work. FQHC employees perceiving a more chaotic work environment and those with depressive or anxiety symptoms were less likely to be engaged at work. Being engaged was associated with confidence in COVID-19 vaccine recommendation for adults.

There is a gap between the current service offer and the needs of people suffering from burnout. Actors in the field, from employers to prescribers, have a role to play in addressing the health needs of the target population, promoting existing services and facilitating their integrative collaboration. This is what a study evaluating the adequacy between the health needs of people experiencing burnout and the services offered to these patients from the point of view of key informants in the canton of Vaud has shown. The first part identified, through empirical research on the Internet, services focused on work organization, therapeutic, social and professional reintegration services. The second part, based on a qualitative focus group method, identified 21 unmet needs.


Il existe un écart entre l'offre de services actuelle et les besoins des personnes en situation de burnout. Les acteurs de terrain, des employeurs aux prescripteurs, ont un rôle à jouer pour répondre aux besoins de santé de la population cible, promouvoir les services existants et faciliter leur collaboration intégrative. C'est ce qu'une étude évaluant l'adéquation entre les besoins de santé des personnes en situation d'épuisement professionnel ou de burnout et les services offerts à ces patients, du point de vue des informateurs clés du canton de Vaud, a démontré. Une première partie a identifié, par une recherche empirique sur internet, les services axés sur l'organisation du travail, les services thérapeutiques, sociaux et de réinsertion professionnelle. La seconde partie, basée sur une méthode qualitative par focus group, a identifié 21 besoins non comblés.

BACKGROUND: The Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) outbreak has caused especially health workers to face mental and physical problems all over the world. The aim of this study is to evaluate burnout, stress perception and perceived social support levels of clinical (the fourth and fifth year) dental students during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The Sociodemographic Information Form (SIF), Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Sense of Coherence-13 (SoC-13), Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10), and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) were used for data. Questionnaires were answered directly or online by the participants. RESULTS: A total of 211 participants, 67.8% were female, 32.2% were male. Of these, 96.2% were aged 20-24 years, 84.4% were nuclear family, 11.8% were extended family, and 3.8% were blended family, and 91.5% were willingly for dentistry choice. Based on the results; the total burnout score indicated moderate burnout (41.99 ± 9.94), the SoC-13 scale indicated a strong sense of coherence (55.24 ± 7.21), the PSS-10 score (22.44 ± 3.44) indicated moderate perceived stress and the MSPSS score (65.92 ± 13.22) indicated high perceived social support. A positive correlation was found between perceived stress and burnout. Based on the personal accomplishment subscale; females, those living in extended family, and those who unwillingly choose dentistry among the clinical dental students had higher intense burnout (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The findings demonstrated that clinical dental students were affected by the emotional stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic conditions. In the education of dentistry faculties, it would be appropriate to carry out comprehensive studies on adaptation to the changing living conditions with the COVID-19 pandemic and taking the necessary measures for the psychological distress caused by the difficulties experienced.

Job demands and resources have been consistently associated with the burnout syndrome in physicians, however the literature points to a lack of robust measures to assess these job characteristics across various medical specialties. This study aimed to develop a theoretically and empirically grounded physician-specific job demands and resources self-report measure - the Physicians' Job Demands and Resources Scale. Relevant dimensions of physicians' job demands and resources were identified, corresponding measurement items were generated and pre-tested, and the factor structure of the resulting 44 items was tested with a sample of 9,176 Portuguese physicians. The results of EFAs and CFAs with two random split samples provided consistent evidence of a nine-factor structure with 38 of the 44 items. Importantly, the nine-factor structure is consistent with the dimensions identified in the literature. The paper discusses the theoretical and practical impacts of the scale.

Introduction: The goal of the study is to assess burnout among postgraduate medical trainees, evaluate the association with sociodemographic features and offer potential wellness strategies for leaders responsible for their education, training, management, and wellbeing. Methods: The Oldenburg Burnout Inventory was used. The web-based, voluntary, and anonymous survey was sent to postgraduate medical trainees from various specialties and all years of training in a tertiary medical center in Beirut, Lebanon. Additional questions were added after the survey regarding reporting channels for burnout and possible interventions for wellbeing. Results: The total number of valid responses are 188. The prevalence rates of high burnout are 37.2% for disengagement and 51.1% for exhaustion. There is a significant difference between the mean of exhaustion and gender (p = 0.003). There is a significant difference between the mean of disengagement and year of training (p = 0.017). There is a significant difference between the mean of exhaustion and year of training (p = 0.029). There is a significant difference between the frequency of disengagement and year of training (p = 0.027). Conclusion: The study reveals how postgraduate medical training program is impacted by the existing challenges from social, health, and financial standpoint, along with the instabilities encountered such as multiple wars and port blast in 2020 and how these variables aggravate burnout. Burnout severely impacts the education and training of PGMT and promoting wellbeing can help reverse the process. Findings contribute to establishing effective strategic interventions for leaders in healthcare management to adopt.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the correlation between quality of life at work and Burnout in workers in the Family Health Strategy. METHODS: Correlational, cross-sectional study carried out with 112 workers, in the pandemic period (October/2020 to June/2021), in Palmas/Tocantins. The Quality of Work Life Assessment Questionnaire (QWLQ-bref) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) were used. RESULTS: A strong negative correlation was identified between Emotional Exhaustion and the Physical/Health, Professional and Total Quality of Life Score at work; and moderate negative correlation between Depersonalization and all domains of Quality of Work Life. Professional Achievement showed a moderate positive correlation with the Psychological and Personal domains and with the Total Quality of Work Life Score. CONCLUSION: The best Quality of Work Life indices were correlated with lower Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization scores and higher scores of Professional Achievement.

BACKGROUND: Although more people than ever are seeking primary care, the ratio of primary care providers to the population continues to rapidly decline. As such, registered nurses (RNs) are taking on increasingly central roles in primary care delivery. Yet little is known about their characteristics, their work environments, and the extent to which they experience poor job outcomes such as nurse burnout. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of the primary care RN workforce and analyze the association of the nurse work environment with job outcomes in primary care. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of survey data representing N = 463 RNs who worked in 398 primary care practices, including primary care offices, community clinics, retail/urgent care clinics, and nurse-managed clinics. Survey questions included measures of the nurse work environment and levels of burnout, job dissatisfaction, and intent to leave. DISCUSSION: Approximately one-third of primary care RNs were burnt out and dissatisfied with their jobs, with the highest risk of these outcomes among RNs in community clinics. Community clinic RNs were also significantly more likely to be Black or Hispanic/Latino, hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and speak English as a second language (all p < .01). Across all settings, better nurse work environments were significantly associated with lower levels of burnout and job dissatisfaction (both p < .01). CONCLUSION: Primary care practices must be equipped to support their RN workforce. Adequate nursing resources are especially needed in community clinics, as patients receiving primary care in these settings frequently face structural inequities.
