RESUMO

The enrichment of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) in aquatic systems can cause eutrophication. Moreover, P rocks may become exhausted in the next 100 years. A slow-release fertilizer called struvite (MgNH4PO4.6H2O) can reduce surface runoff. However, the high cost of raw material or chemicals is a bottleneck in their economical production. Therefore, incinerated sewage sludge ash, food wastewater, and bittern were combined as the sources of P, N, and Mg, respectively. Sawdust biochar was used to enhance the adsorptive recovery of nutrients. First, recovery kinetics was studied by comparing bittern-impregnated biochar (BtB) with the Mg-impregnated biochar (MgB). Subsequently, the synergistic physical and chemical interactions were observed for P and N recovery. Almost complete PO43-P recoveries were achieved within 10 min for both biochars. However, NH4+-N recovery was stable after 2 h, with 26% recovery by MgB and 20% recovery by BtB. Biochars activated with steam (steam-activated biochar) and KOH (KOH-activated biochar) gave superior activities to those of unactivated biochars and activated carbon (AC) nutrient recovery and struvite purity. Moreover, the activated biochars showed a lower risk of surface runoff, similar to that of AC. Therefore, activated biochars can be used as an alternative to AC for economical struvite production from a combination of wastewater sources.

RESUMO

The objective of this study is to develop a remediation technology for composited heavy metal-contaminated soil. Biochars (BC300, BC400, and BC500) derived from corn were combined with potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4) to immobilize and remove heavy metal ions, including mercury (Hg2+), cadmium (Cd2+), and lead (Pb2+). The adsorption kinetics of metal ions in aqueous solutions with different concentrations was tested, and the fitting effects of the two models were compared. The findings demonstrate that the joint application of biochar and KH2PO4 could markedly enhance the immobilization efficacy of Pb2+, whereas the utilization of KH2PO4 on its own exhibited a more pronounced immobilization impact on Cd2+. Furthermore, the present study underscores the shortcomings of various remediation techniques that must be taken into account when addressing heavy metal-contaminated soils. It also emphasizes the value of comprehensive remediation techniques that integrate multiple remediation agents. This study offers a novel approach and methodology for addressing the intricate and evolving challenges posed by heavy metal contamination in soil. Its practical value and potential for application are significant.

RESUMO

Polyphosphates, chains of polymerized phosphate subunits, are used as food additives for various applications such as conservation, water retention, and pH buffering. Currently, the value chain of phosphates is linear, based on mining fossil phosphate rock, which is anticipated to be depleted in a few hundred years. With no replacement available, a transition to a circular phosphate economy, to which biological systems can contribute, is required. Baker's yeast can hyperaccumulate phosphate from various phosphate-rich waste streams and form polyphosphates, which can be used directly or as polyphosphate-rich yeast extract with enhanced properties in the food industry. By maturing the technology to an industrial level and allowing upcycled waste streams for food applications, substantial contributions to a sustainable phosphate economy can be achieved.

RESUMO

Phosphorus recovery from human waste will help assure global food security, reduce environmental impact, and ensure effective stewardship of this limited and valuable resource. This can be accomplished by the precipitation of struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) in a two-zone reactor, continuously fed with nutrient-rich hydrolysed urine and a magnesium solution. The solid struvite crystals are periodically "harvested", removing accumulated crystal mass - and therefore recovered nutrients - from the process, and the operating campaign can, in principle, be continuously operated in a batch-continuous operating mode. A previously developed process model is augmented, incorporating two well-mixed volumes (upper zone and lower zone) that are coupled by intermixing forward and back flows. The intermixing back flow is parametrised and, therefore, adjusted for analysis. Crystal linear growth rate is modelled by a simple power-law kinetic, driven by the nutrient solution's saturation index (SI) of struvite. The instantaneous mass transfer rate of struvite constituents from liquid to solid phase is predicted, using the total interfacial area of the crystal population exposed to the well-mixed solution. This model describes a 12-L, laboratory reactor operated in the hybrid batch-continuous mode, although larger reactors could easily be accommodated, subject to their mixing behaviours. Experiments were performed at a 10-hour hydraulic residence time (HRT), which, importantly, is based on the volume of the well-mixed lower zone, since this is the volume of liquid that actively interacts with the suspended struvite crystals. The Mg/P feed molar ratio was varied (0.34, 0.64 and 1.29) to assess Mg feed rate-limiting behaviour. The concentration profiles of elemental P and Mg agree with experimentation, while P and Mg composition in the solid and X-ray diffraction support the production of struvite.

RESUMO

Iron shavings (IS) are low-cost industrial byproducts that show great potential in removing phosphorus (P) from contaminated water. This work investigates the effectiveness of IS for P (PO4-P) removal and emphasizes its pretreatment and longevity. A 4-d pretreatment of IS with 2.5 % NaCl resulted in a significant increase in P adsorption capacity, from approximately 1.0 to 2.5 mg/g. In column tests, the P removal efficiency remained above 60 % over 60 d, with a capacity of 4.1 mg P/g. Longevity tests involved seven adsorption-regeneration cycles, with an effective IS regeneration by 1 N NaOH and neutralization by HCl solution (pH=2), and the P adsorption capacity only slightly decreased from 2.14 to 1.75 mg P/g. To significantly improve the IS regeneration operation, we employed induction heating and compared an intermittent 10-s induction heating with an isothermal hot NaOH (85 ℃) treatment in 10-min desorption tests (95.3 % versus 56.6 % regeneration). We further found that IH completely regenerated IS in 5 min with 100 s of IH application, but 30 min were needed for hot NaOH (85 ℃) treatment. SEM/EDX, XRD, and XPS tests were conducted to track the changes in the morphology, crystallinity, and surface oxidation products of IS in the cycle tests. Notably, IS surface changed from coarse to smooth with fewer reactive sites and a higher conversion of amorphous Fe oxides to more crystalline Fe3O4, resulting in lower reactivity and fewer exposed Fe0 sites over multiple cycles. All of these mechanisms contributed to the deterioration in P removal capacity. Overall, this study provides a solid foundation for applying low-cost IS in effectively removing P from agricultural runoff.

RESUMO

Global food security, which has emerged as one of the sustainability challenges, impacts every country. As food cannot be generated without involving nutrients, research has intensified recently to recover unused nutrients from waste streams. As a finite resource, phosphorus (P) is largely wasted. This work critically reviews the technical applicability of various water technologies to recover macro-nutrients such as P, N, and K from wastewater. Struvite precipitation, adsorption, ion exchange, and membrane filtration are applied for nutrient recovery. Technological strengths and drawbacks in their applications are evaluated and compared. Their operational conditions such as pH, dose required, initial nutrient concentration, and treatment performance are presented. Cost-effectiveness of the technologies for P or N recovery is also elaborated. It is evident from a literature survey of 310 published studies (1985-2022) that no single technique can effectively and universally recover target macro-nutrients from liquid waste. Struvite precipitation is commonly used to recover over 95 % of P from sludge digestate with its concentration ranging from 200 to 4000 mg/L. The recovered precipitate can be reused as a fertilizer due to its high content of P and N. Phosphate removal of higher than 80 % can be achieved by struvite precipitation when the molar ratio of Mg2+/PO43- ranges between 1.1 and 1.3. The applications of artificial intelligence (AI) to collect data on critical parameters control optimization, improve treatment effectiveness, and facilitate water utilities to upscale water treatment plants. Such infrastructure in the plants could enable the recovered materials to be reused to sustain food security. As nutrient recovery is crucial in wastewater treatment, water treatment plant operators need to consider (1) the costs of nutrient recovery techniques; (2) their applicability; (3) their benefits and implications. It is essential to note that the treatment cost of P and/or N-laden wastewater depends on the process applied and local conditions.

RESUMO

Recovery of nutrients from wastewater has a paramount importance for a sustainable and safe environment. In this study removal of ammonia and recovery of resources in the form of struvite from a complex pharmaceutical acidic wastewater having high concentration of ammoniacal nitrogen (NH4-N > 40 g/L) and other co-existing contaminants (magnesium, phosphorous, phenol etc.) was explored. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was employed for design of experiments and process optimization. RSM results revealed that removal of ammoniacal nitrogen, i.e., struvite precipitation was found to be maximum in alkaline pH (10.5-11.0) at a N:Mg molar ratio (1:0.030 to 1:0.035) and N:P molar ratio (1:0.025 to 1:0.030). X-Ray diffraction, thermo-gravimetric analysis and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of struvite crystals in the obtained precipitate. Techno-economic assessment (TEA) based on mass energy balance principle and market equipment specifications revealed that a pilot-scale plant set up would have a break-even period of 1.06 years with a return on investment as 94.28%. This clearly elucidated the economic viability of the developed process for industrial applications for management of high ammonia laden pharmaceutical wastewater. While further specific technological improvements are needed for reduction of cost, this study will guide researchers and industries for careful selection of target markets to reduce the cost for successful implementation.

RESUMO

Tri(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP), a common organophosphate flame retardant, was frequently detected in the environment and posed threats to human health. In this work, the main component of ilmenite FeTiO3 was synthesized by the sol-gel method and employed as the catalyst for the degradation of TCPP by activating persulfate (PS) under UV irradiation. The degradation processes were fitted by the pseudo-first-order kinetic. The kobs value in UV/FeTiO3/PS system was up to 0.0056 min-1 and much higher than that in UV/PS (0.0014 min-1), UV/FeTiO3 (0.0012 min-1) and FeTiO3/PS (0.0016 min-1) systems, demonstrating a distinct synergistic effect in TCPP removal. The degradation efficiency of TCPP increased with the increase of UV intensity, PS concentration and catalyst dosage, and with the decrease of pH. By quenching experiment and EPR analysis, ·OH was confirmed to be the dominant radical in the reaction of the UV/FeTiO3/PS system. The possible degradation pathways of TCPP were dechlorination, dealkylation, and further oxidation of alkyl groups based on the theoretical calculation of frontier molecular orbits. The toxicity of degradation intermediates evaluated by luminescence inhibition rate of photoluminescence was higher than TCPP. Thus, TCPP can be degraded in the UV/FeTiO3/PS system effectively at the premise of introducing controlling measures to reduce the toxicity of degradation intermediates.

RESUMO

Recovery of phosphorus from wastewater through struvite crystallization is one of the most attractive methods. However, the cost of chemical consumption makes this technology is unattractive to some extent. In this work, highly active serpentine was prepared by one-step mechanical activation and then used to recover phosphate as struvite from the black water containing 132.8 mg/L phosphorus and 3144 mg/L ammonia nitrogen. The results indicated that the prepared active serpentine can release magnesium ions and hydroxide ions simultaneously into an aqueous solution and is an ideal raw material for struvite crystallization. The factors for phosphorus recovery in this process mainly include mechanical activation intensity, serpentine dosage, and contact time. For the actual black water, a high recovery rate of phosphorus (>98%) is achieved by using active serpentine as the magnesium and alkali source for struvite precipitation. The recovery product was identified as struvite with a median particle size of 32.96 µm. It was confirmed that the mechanical activation damaged the crystal structure of the raw serpentine, improving the activity of Mg2+ and OH-. The undissolved Si-containing particles act as crystal seeds, accelerating the struvite crystallization process. Furthermore, a pilot-scale test was conducted with a rural public toilet in Xiong'an New District, Hebei Province. The results showed that an acceptable phosphorus recovery (98%) could be achieved using active serpentine. Additionally, it was demonstrated that the serpentine process to recover phosphate as struvite reduced the cost by 54.4% in compared with an ordinary chemical process. The active serpentine is a promising dual source of magnesium and alkali for the phosphorus recovery by the struvite method. It has a potential prospect for the large-scale application in phosphorus recovery and struvite fertilizer production.

RESUMO

Triclosan (TCS) is a typical environmental pollutant, which seriously threatens the health of humans and organisms. A novel strategy of biochar/Ag3PO4/polyaniline (PANI) composite photocatalyst was synthesized by a facile chemical precipitation method to efficiently degrade TCS. XRD, Raman, ESR, etc. were used to reveal the effective associations among physiochemistry, photochemistry and photocatalytic properties of the composite. It was proved the synergistic effects of biochar (T-Bio) and PANI resulted in the decrease of Ag3PO4 particle size, the enhancement of adsorption, the improvement of light utilization, the increase of photogenerated carrier separation and the promotion of reactive species. The photocatalytic mechanism showed h+ was the main active species, O2- and OH played minor roles. Under the irradiation of visible light, the optimal photocatalyst (1.0% T-Bio/AP/1.0% PANI) displayed excellent photocatalytic activity with the removal rate of 85.21% for TCS within 10 min, and the apparent rate constant K' was 2.38 times of Ag3PO4. 11 main intermediates for TCS degradation were identified, and their toxicity was significantly reduced. The possible degradation pathways were proposed. This work is the first systematic study on the degradation behavior of TCS by Ag3PO4-based photocatalyst, and it provides a new approach to fabricate photocatalysts with synergistic effects and amazing photocatalytic activity by biochar.

RESUMO

Understanding how lithium interacts with complex biosystems is crucial for uncovering the roles of this alkali metal in biology and designing extraction techniques for battery production and environmental remediation. In this light, fundamental information about Li+ binding to nucleic acids is required. Herein, a new database of Li+-nucleic acid interactions is presented that contains CCSD(T)/CBS benchmark energies for all nucleobase and phosphate binding locations. Furthermore, the performance of 54 DFT functionals in combination with three triple-zeta (TZ) basis sets (6-311+G(3df,2p), aug-cc-pVTZ, and def2-TZVPP) is tested. The results identify a range of functionals across different families (B2-PLYP, PBE-QIDH, ωB97, ωB97X-D, MN15, B3PW91, B97-2, TPSS, BP86-D3(BJ), and PBE) that can accurately describe coordinated Li+-nucleic acid interactions, with the average mean percent error (AMPE) across binding positions and basis sets being below 2%. Nevertheless, only three functionals tested (B2-PLYP, PBE-QIDH, and ωB97X-D) preserve this accuracy for metal cation-π interactions, suggesting that caution is warranted when choosing a functional to describe a diverse range of Li+-nucleic acid complexes. Removal of counterpoise corrections has very little impact on the reliability of most functionals, while the effect of empirical dispersion corrections varies depending on the functional choice and interaction type. While increasing the basis set to quadruple-zeta quality had little impact on the AMPE, the accuracy of double-zeta basis sets varies with family. Importantly, DFT methods reproduce the CCSD(T)/CBS trend in the preferred binding position for a given nucleic acid component and the global trend across components (phosphate ≫ G > C ≫ A ∼ T = U), as well as the geometries of the metal-nucleic acid complexes. The overall top performing functional is PBE-QIDH, which results in deviations from CCSD(T)/CBS values as small as ∼0.1 kcal/mol for nucleobase contacts and ∼1 kcal/mol for phosphate interactions. The most accurate DFT methods identified in the present work are recommended for future investigations of lithium interactions in larger nucleic acid systems to provide insights into the biological roles of this metal and the design of novel biosensing strategies.

RESUMO

The present work used the integrated Carbone γ-ray spectrometric data and HPGe γ-ray spectrometer data to the prospect of radioactive zones at the Sibaiya area, Central Eastern Desert, Egypt. Carbone γ-ray spectrometric survey revealed ten uranium anomalies distributed along the car traverse from west to east direction have values of 240, 104, 44, 34, 150, 124, 232, 132, 60, and 90 ppm, respectively. These significant anomalies are associated mainly with phosphates mines characterized by a substantial increase of eU/eTh and eU/K ratios. Ten phosphate samples were collected from the determining anomalies. They were analyzed using the HPGe detector gamma-ray spectrometer. It was found that the results of radioelement concentrations by carborne survey agree well with that obtained by HPGe. The average activity concentration for the Sibaiya phosphate samples under study is 152.5, 947, and 33.2 Bq/kg against the worldwide accepted limit of 412, 33, and 45 Bq/kg for 40K, 238U, and 232Th, respectively. The radium equivalent ranges from 499 to 3484.9 Bq/kg, which is higher than the recommended value 370 Bq/kg. The external hazard's (Hex) calculated values range from 1.35 to 9.42 mGy/yr, and the internal hazard (Hin) ranges from 2.58 to 18.69. These indexes must be lower than unity to keep the radiation hazard insignificant. The value of the radioactivity level index (Iγ) is found to be more than unity, which varies between 1.68 and 11.63. The dose rate (DR) ranges from 149.5 to 970 nGy/h, higher than the international mean value of 55 nGy/h. The annual effective dose ranges from 0.18 to 1.19 mSv, which less than unity in almost all values. Meanwhile, the values of activity of 226Ra ranged from 454 to 3429 Bq/kg and the mean of mass radon exhalation rate (Jm) is 6615 mBq kg-1 h-1 which is lower than the worldwide average.

RESUMO

An efficient ionic liquids (ILs) recycle technology will increase the economic viability of lignocellulosic biorefinery. The availability of recycling 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride for rice straw (RS) pretreatment was conducted. The kosmotropic salt K3 PO4 (TKP) solution was used as antisolvent for cellulose precipitation and forming a three-phase system consisting of biomass, ILs-rich, and salt-rich phases. The upper ILs phase and the bottom TKP phase were recycled without additional purification, which significantly simplifies the process for recovering ILs. Subsequently, the RS pretreated with multiple reusing ILs (RPRS) were investigated by components analysis, structure evolution, enzymatic hydrolysis, and fermentation experiments. The results showed that unpurified reusing ILs led to further delignification and improvement of enzyme accessibility of the pretreated RS. The reducing sugar yield of RS pretreated with 8th reusing IL (8th RPRS) could still reach 98.9%, and the ethanol and succinic acid concentrations achieved 91.9 and 29.3 g/L by simultaneous saccharification and cofermentation. The present study demonstrated that the ILs recovered by phase-separation process could be used for RS pretreatment, and achieving high titer ethanol fermentation.

RESUMO

In this study, the extract of two strains of cyanobacteria was used for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (NPs). UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analyses were carried out to characterise the NPs. The antioxidant activity and heavy metal detection properties were investigated; moreover, their minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration against the multi-drug resistant bacteria were determined. The most abundant materials in these extracts were carbohydrates, so the biosynthesis of NPs using exopolysaccharide (EPS) was also investigated. The surface plasmon resonance of NPs had a peak at 435 nm and EPS NPs at 350-450 nm. The NPs produced by Nostoc sp. IBRC-M5064 extract revealed the face-centred cubic (fcc) structure of AgCl, while NPs of N. pruniforme showed the fcc crystalline structure of Ag3PO4 and AgCl. The FESEM showed the spherical shape of these NPs. The AgCl/Ag3PO4 colloid, in comparison with AgCl, showed better antioxidant activity and antibacterial effect. The heavy metal detection analysis of NPs revealed that the NPs of both stains involved in Hg (NO3)2 detection.

RESUMO

Electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) is a solid waste remained in filters after using sulfuric acid to leaching manganese carbonate ore. EMR contains high concentration of soluble manganese (Mn2+) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), which seriously pollutes the environment. In this study, a low cost of phosphate based binder for Mn2+ and NH4+-N stabilization in EMR by low grade-MgO (LG-MgO) and superphosphate was studied. The effects of different types of stabilizing agent on the concentrations of NH4+-N and Mn2+, the pH of the EMR leaching solution, stabilizing mechanisms of NH4+-N and Mn2+, leaching test and economic analysis were investigated. The results shown that the pH of the EMR leaching solution was 8.07, and the concentration of Mn2+ was 1.58 mg/L, both of which met the integrated wastewater discharge standard (GB8978-1996), as well as the concentration of NH4+-N decreased from 523.46 mg/L to 32 mg/L, when 4.5 wt.% LG-MgO and 8 wt.% superphosphate dosage were simultaneously used for the stabilization of EMR for 50 d Mn2+ and NH4+-N were mainly stabilized by Mn3(PO4)2·2H2O, MnOOH, Mn3O4, Mn(H2PO4)2·2H2O and NH4MgPO4·6H2O. Economic evaluation revealed that the treatment cost of EMR was $ 11.89/t. This study provides a low-cost materials for NH4+-N and Mn2+ stabilization in EMR.

RESUMO

Boric acid is one of the most mobile inorganic contaminant species in nature due to its pKa of 9.23. Co-precipitation of borate with hydroxyapatite (HAp: Ca5(PO4)3OH) facilitates the simultaneous removal of borate with co-existing oxoanions in natural waters. The cost of phosphate is an impediment to industrialize the co-precipitation of borate with HAp for treatment of geothermal waters. In the present work, an inexpensive industrial by-product of magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) derived from sewage sludge, was examined as a phosphate source. MAP includes 89% pure magnesium ammonium phosphate, resulting in better performance than the pure chemical form of NH4H2PO4, because Mg2+ and Al3+ (trace elements in MAP product) play roles in enhancing the removal rate of borate and lowering the equilibrium borate concentration. These ions have a good affinity with phosphate to nucleate crystal seeds independently of powdery Ca sources. To reduce the bulky volume of solid residues, hot isostatic pressing (HIP) was applied. There is structural water in HAp; therefore, the greatest volume reduction was achieved with 78.3 ± 2.0% (n = 3). Additionally, a synergic effect to suppress the released borate, greater than the sequential combination of calcination and cold isostatic pressing was accomplished in the toxicity contents leaching procedure (TCLP) test. This is not due to larger crystal sizes alone, but it is derived from boron stabilization in HAp at an atomic level by the synergic effect of heating and pressing simultaneously.

RESUMO

The recycling of nutrients from wastewater and their recovery in the form of valuable products is an effective strategy to accelerate the circular economy concept. Phosphorus recovery from wastewater by struvite crystallization (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) is one of the most applied techniques to compensate for the increasing demand and to slow down the depletion rate of phosphate rocks. Using low-cost magnesium sources, such as seawater, improves the financial sustainability of struvite production. In this study, the potential of seawater for struvite crystallization versus the commonly used magnesium source, MgCl2, was tested by crystal growth and kinetic experiments. The impact of ammonium concentration, magnesium concentration and pH on the growth kinetics of struvite in synthetic and real reject water were studied. The results showed that simultaneous precipitation of calcium phosphate was insignificant when using seawater, while presence of struvite seeds diminished it further. Among the supersaturation regulators, pH had the most significant effect on the struvite growth with both MgCl2 and seawater, while high N:P molar ratios further improved the struvite crystal growth by seawater. The N:P molar ratios higher than 6 and Mg:P molar ratios higher than 0.2 are recommended to improve the crystal growth kinetics. It was concluded that seawater is a promising alternative magnesium source and the control of supersaturation regulators (i.e., Mg:P, N:P and pH) is an effective strategy to control the reaction kinetics and product properties.

RESUMO

Build-up of extracellular matrix in liver fibrosis results in changes on endogenous molecules expression that may be studied through the fluorescence characterization of ex vivo liver samples. To the best of our knowledge, no investigations have provided in-depth evidence and discussion on the changes of the endogenous fluorescence in ex vivo tissue due to the effects of the preservation media. In this work, we contrast and analyze the endogenous fluorescence from tryptophan, vitamin A, hydroxyproline and elastin cross-links potential biomarkers of the liver fibrosis, in in vivo measurements and liver samples preserved on formaldehyde, and two standard preservation media. As it is known, chemical changes in tissue, caused by formaldehyde fixation, alter the endogenous fluorescence spectra. We propose the use of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and Iscove's Modified Dulbecco's Medium (IMDM) to elude the fluorescence changes. PBS and IMDM showed to maintain the endogenous fluorescence characteristics similar to in vivo conditions. The results of this work point the way for a more reliable assessment of endogenous fluorescence in ex vivo hepatic studies.

RESUMO

Phosphorus (P) is a non-renewable resource extracted from phosphate rock to produce agricultural fertilizers. Since P is essential for life, it is important to preserve this resource and explore alternative sources of P to reduce its criticality. This study aimed to assess whether fertilizing with sludge-based phosphate fertilizers (SBPF) can be a suitable alternative to doing so with fertilizers produced from phosphate rock. Environmental impacts of production and land application of SBPF from four recovery processes were compared to those of two reference scenarios: triple super phosphate (TSP) and sewage sludge. To avoid bias when comparing scenarios, part of the environmental burden of wastewater treatment is allocated to sludge production. The CML-IA method was used to perform life cycle impact assessment. Results highlighted that production and land application of SBPF had higher environmental impacts than those of TSP due to the large amounts of energy and reactants needed to recover P, especially when sludge had a low P concentration. Certain environmental impacts of production and land application of sewage sludge were similar to those of SBPF. Sensitivity analysis conducted for cropping systems highlighted variability in potential application rates of sewage sludge or SBPF. Finally, because they contain lower contents of heavy metals than sewage sludge or TSP, SBPF are of great interest, but they require more mineral fertilizers to supplement their fertilization than sewage sludge. Thus, SBPF have advantages and disadvantages that need to be considered, since they may influence their use within fertilization practices.

RESUMO

Implant-related infections are an emerging clinical and economic problem. Therefore, we decided to assess potential clinical usefulness and safety of silver orthophosphate microparticles (SOMPs) regarding their shape. We synthesized and then assessed antimicrobial properties and potential cytotoxicity of six shapes of SOMPs (tetrapod, cubes, spheres, tetrahedrons, branched, and rhombic dodecahedron). We found that SOMPs had a high antimicrobial effect; they were more efficient against fungi than bacteria. SOMPs exerted an antimicrobial effect in concentrations not toxic to mammalian cells: human fetal osteoblast (hFOB1.19), osteosarcoma (Saos-2), mouse preosteoblasts (MC3T3-E1), skin fibroblast (HDF), and mouse myoblast (C2C12). At higher concentration SOMPs, induced shape- and concentration-dependent cytotoxicity (according to MTT and BrdU assays). Tetrapod SOMPs had the smallest effect, whereas cubical SOMPs, the highest on cell viability. hFOB1.19 were the most resistant cells and C2C12, the most susceptible ones. We have proven that the induction of oxidative stress and inflammation is involved in the cytotoxic mechanism of SOMPs. After treatment with microparticles, we observed changes in levels of reactive oxygen species, first-line defense antioxidants-superoxide dismutase (SOD1, SOD3), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX4), metalloproteinase (MMP1, MMP3), and NF-κB protein. Neither cell cycle distribution nor ultrastructure was altered as determined by flow cytometry and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. In conclusion, silver orthophosphate may be a safe and effective antimicrobial agent on the implant surface. Spherical-shaped SOMPs are the most promising for biomedical application.
