Strawberries are a favorite fruit for most people, but the residues of pesticides on strawberries might be risky to human health. Tebufenpyrad and milbemectin are broad-spectrum acaricides with insecticide properties authorized for use on strawberries in Egypt. As a result, it is crucial to investigate their residues in the final product to ensure customers' safety. Consequently, field trials were conducted following the Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) to study the dissipation rate and terminal residues of tebufenpyrad and milbemectin on strawberries. Tebufenpyrad and milbemectin residues in strawberries declined due to first-order decay process, showing significant degradation (88.5% and 94.7%, respectively) after 14 days. Risk assessment study was carried out by comparing the national estimated daily intake (NEDI) to the acceptable daily intake (ADI). The results demonstrated that the dietary risk posed by the residues of tebufenpyrad and milbemectin in strawberry fruits was acceptable for consumers. It is envisaged that the current study's findings would support the safe application of tebufenpyrad and milbemectin to strawberries and perhaps other crops in Egypt and other countries with similar climatic conditions.

Although trace metals in strawberry production system have attracted growing attention, little is known about metal fractionation in soil for strawberry cultivation. We hypothesized that the metal fractions in soil influenced by strawberry production had significant effect on food chain transport of metals and their risk in soil. Here, samples of strawberries and soil were gathered in the Yangtze River Delta, China to verify the hypothesis. Results showed that the acid-soluble Cr, Cd, and Ni in soil for strawberry cultivation were 21.5%-88.3% higher than those in open field soil, which enhanced uptake and bioaccessible levels of these metals in strawberries. Overall, the ecological, mobility, and health risks of Pb, Zn, Ni, and Cu in soil were at a low level. However, the ecological risk of bioavailable Cd, mobility risk of Cd, and cancer risk of bioavailable Cr in over 70% of the soil samples were at moderate, high, and acceptable levels, respectively. Since the increased acid-soluble Cr and Ni in soil were related to soil acidification induced by strawberry production, nitrogen fertilizer application should be optimized to prevent soil acidification and reduce transfer of Cr and Ni. Additionally, as Cd and organic matter accumulated in soil, the acid-soluble Cd and the ecological and mobility risks of Cd in soil were enhanced. To decrease transfer and risk of Cd in soil, organic fertilizer application should be optimized to mitigate Cd accumulation, alter organic matter composition, and subsequently promote the transformation of bioavailable Cd into residual Cd in soil.

Phytophthora cactorum is an oomycete species that causes enormous losses on horticultural crops, including strawberries. The purpose of this work was to investigate the alterations caused by P. cactorum inoculation in hydroponically grown strawberry plantlets (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI). It was observed that with MRI, spatial and temporal progression of the infection could be observed in the crown using quantitative MR parameters, namely relaxation time maps. Relaxation times are numeric subject-specific properties that describe the MR signal behavior in an examined anatomical region. Elevated [Formula: see text] relaxation time values were observed inside the infected plant crowns with respect to the healthy references. The [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] values of healthy plants were small in the crown region and further diminished during the development of the plant. Furthermore, elevated [Formula: see text] relaxation time values were seen in regions where P. cactorum progression was observed in corresponding plant dissection photographs. Quantitative susceptibility maps (QSM) were calculated to estimate the local magnetic field inhomogeneities. The QSM suggests magnetic susceptibility differences near the center of the pith. This study provides novel non-invasive information on the structure and development of strawberry plants and the effects caused by the P. cactorum infection.

Prochloraz and its metabolites in strawberries have not been determined until now. Meanwhile, few reports in the literature have concerned the dissipation behavior and risk assessment of prochloraz and its metabolites in strawberries under greenhouse conditions in Beijing. A method for the determination of prochloraz and its metabolites in strawberries was developed using QuEChERS in combination with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Prochloraz and its metabolites recovered from strawberries were present in concentrations of 73.06% to 116.01%, their RSDs ranged from 1.12% to 9.17%, and their limits of detection ranged from 0.1 to 1 µg kg-1. Then, a study was conducted on the dissipation of prochloraz in strawberries under greenhouse conditions. The dissipation of prochloraz in strawberries followed the first-order kinetic equation, and its half-life was 8.06 days. The health risk associated with prochloraz in strawberries was evaluated using the target hazard quotient (THQ) method and EFSA PRIMo model. The results showed that the THQ values, %ARfD values, and %ADI values were less than 1. These results indicate that no health concerns of prochloraz are associated with the consumption of the studied strawberries. The government can use the results of this study to support the establishment of a maximum residue level for prochloraz in strawberries.

This study aimed to investigate the application of biopolymeric materials (chitosan, gelatin, and pomegranate peel extract as photosensitizer) and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on the physicochemical and microbial safety of strawberries. The photosensitizer potential of the materials was confirmed by a light-dose-dependent photobleaching profile. The application of light (525 nm; 50 J cm-2) decreased by >2 log CFU mL-1 the survival of Staphylococcus aureus on the surface of the photoactive-biopolymeric films. Moreover, the materials did not present in vivo cytotoxicity using Danio rerio (Zebrafish) as well as cytophytotoxic, genotoxic, or mutagenic potentials against Allium cepa plant model, which points out their safety to be used as films without posing a risk to the humans and the environment. The photoactive-polymeric coatings were able to maintain the strawberries weight, and the association with green light was 100 % effective in delaying fungal contamination. These coated-strawberries presented a significant reduction in S. aureus survival after light application (5.47-4.34 log CFU mL-1). The molecular level analysis of the photoactive compound cyanidin-3-glucoside indicates absorption on UV-Vis consistent with aPDT action. Therefore, this study showed that the antimicrobial effects of aPDT combined with photoactive-biopolymeric coatings were enhanced, while the quality of the strawberries was maintained.

In the current study, a novel chitosan-based composite, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCHS)/oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose (OCMC) was fabricated and characterized. The composite film (CMCHS 1.5%w/v + OCMC 0.8%w/v) was more uniform and had better tensile properties, UV blocking, water vapor permeability, and antifungal properties than pure CMCHS film. Preservation experiments showed that the CMCHS/OCMC film was more efficient for retaining the quality decrease of strawberry during storage. By the end of 7 days' storage, the hardness, contents of organic acid, soluble solids, and reducing sugar of coated strawberries were increased by 35.1%, 38.5%, 14.1%, and 3.5%, respectively, compared to the control group; and the decay rate of strawberries in CMCHS/OCMC group also dropped to 36%, about 42% decrease than that in control, suggesting the promising application of CMCHS/OCMC composite in coating preservation.

In this study, fluopyram (FOR), acetamiprid (ATP), and chlorantraniliprole (CAP) were used individually or in combination at the maximum recommended dose in greenhouse strawberries to research the dissipation dynamics and dietary risks. A multi-residue analytical method for FOR, ATP, and CAP in strawberries using UPLC-MS/MS integrated with the QuEChERS approach was developed with strong linearity (R2 ≧ 0.9990), accuracy (recoveries of 82.62 to 107.79%), and precision (relative standard deviations of 0.58% to 12.73%). The limits of quantification were 0.01 mg kg-1. Field results showed that the half-lives of FOR, ATP and CAP in strawberry fruits were 11.6-12.4 days, 6.1-6.7 days, and 10.9-11.7 days, respectively. The half-lives of the three investigated pesticides showed no significant difference when used individually or in combination. A risk assessment indicated that the dietary intake risks of the three pesticides in grown strawberries were 0.0041 to 7.63% whether applied alone or in combination, which demonstrated that the dietary intake risks of the three pesticides in grown strawberries could be negligible for Chinese male and female consumers, and that even though pesticides were used in combination, there was less cause for concern about the safety. This paper serves as a guide for the safe use of FOR, ATP, and CAP on greenhouse strawberries.

Powdery mildew is one of the most economically destructive diseases in protected strawberry production. Here we present the first genome assembly for Podosphaera aphanis, the causal agent of powdery mildew on strawberry. This obligate-biotrophic fungal pathogen was sampled from a naturally occurring outbreak on Fragaria × ananassa 'Malling Centenary' plants grown under cover in the United Kingdom. Assembled reads resolved a 55.6 Mb genome, composed of 12,357 contigs whose annotation led to prediction of 17,239 genes encoding 17,328 proteins. The genome is highly-complete, with 97.5% of conserved single-copy Ascomycete genes shown to be present. This annotated P. aphanis genome provides a molecular resource for further investigation into host-pathogen interactions in the strawberry powdery mildew pathosystem.

Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) production is a major aspect of the agricultural economy in Turkey's Mediterranean region, offering high rates of employment and farm revenue. The effects of treatment of the exogenous amino acid on yield, quality, and physiological diversity for strawberry production was analyzed considering the economic aspects. To achieve this, 4 different irrigation regimes (IR (irrigation) 125, IR100, IR75, IR50) with proline treatment was tested. The total berry yield, photosynthesis and leaf water potential (LWP) significantly decreased as irrigation application rates declined. The IR125 treatment with proline (PIR125) produced the highest overall berry production. The use of proline significantly increased berry production by 23%. Exogenous proline generated 3.5 kg/1 m3 greater yields than control in terms of irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE). Under the IR50 conditions, the treatment of proline yielded a 32% higher than the control. Moreover, proline significantly increased fruit soluble solids content (SSC) by 6.4%. The production system achieves the highest cost-benefit ratio (CBR) under PIR125 whereas the lowest cost-benefit ratio under IR50. When each scenario was considered at individually, it was evident that the more water used the more efficient high tunnel strawberry production. The fact that proline generated an increase in CBR in all four irrigation regimes proves this amino acid's economic effectiveness. As a result, PIR125 is recommended for the highest efficiency and CBR in Mediterranean environment. However, it has been discovered that using proline to alleviate this problem in areas where water is limited could be quite helpful.

Heavy metal pollution is a major threat to agricultural produce and it can pose potential ecological risks which subsequently impacts on human health. Strawberries are an economically important produce of China. The intrinsic link of heavy metal pollution risk in the soil-strawberry ecosystem is of concern. In this study, the pollution index of heavy metal pollutants in farmlands of different provinces were evaluated, and the results showed significantly high levels of cadmium. In addition, Nemerow integrated pollution index analysis showed that low-pollution farmlands only accounted for 14.07% of the total arable land area. Then, the transfer factors were used to calculate the migration of heavy metals from the soil into strawberries. The results showed that cadmium and nickel were relatively high in strawberries from the Guangxi province. Similar results were found for mercury in Jiangxi Province. The pollution index of single food pollution also showed that mercury in strawberries from Jiangxi Province was at a moderate pollution level. The comprehensive pollution index indicated that heavy metal pollution in strawberries in Central China may be severe. In addition, spatial clustering analysis showed that cadmium, chromium, lead, arsenic and zinc in strawberries had significant hotspot clustering in central, south and southwest China. Finally, our studies also suggested that the risk of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic diseases was higher in the (2, 4] years age group than in other age groups. People in Yunnan Province were also found to have a higher non-carcinogenic risk than those in other provinces and cities in China. This study provides a comprehensive view of the potential risks of heavy metal contamination in strawberries, which could provide assistance in the design of regulatory and risk management programs for chemical pollutants in strawberries, thus ensuring the safety of consumption of these edible fruits.

Fresh berries are a popular and important component of the human diet. The demand for high-quality berries and sustainable production methods is increasing globally, challenging breeders to develop modern berry cultivars that fulfill all desired characteristics. Since 1994, research projects have characterized genetic resources, developed modern tools for high-throughput screening, and published data in publicly available repositories. However, the key findings of different disciplines are rarely linked together, and only a limited range of traits and genotypes has been investigated. The Horizon2020 project BreedingValue will address these challenges by studying a broader panel of strawberry, raspberry and blueberry genotypes in detail, in order to recover the lost genetic diversity that has limited the aroma and flavor intensity of recent cultivars. We will combine metabolic analysis with sensory panel tests and surveys to identify the key components of taste, flavor and aroma in berries across Europe, leading to a high-resolution map of quality requirements for future berry cultivars. Traits linked to berry yields and the effect of environmental stress will be investigated using modern image analysis methods and modeling. We will also use genetic analysis to determine the genetic basis of complex traits for the development and optimization of modern breeding technologies, such as molecular marker arrays, genomic selection and genome-wide association studies. Finally, the results, raw data and metadata will be made publicly available on the open platform Germinate in order to meet FAIR data principles and provide the basis for sustainable research in the future.

Product authentication is one of the most important food quality assurances. Considering the importance of consumption of berry fruits with proven health-beneficial properties, high sensory values and rich composition in bioactive substances, the aim of this study was to evaluate a straightforward and simple procedure for the protein fingerprinting of berry seeds. For this purpose, protein profiles of 45 samples of genuine berry fruit cultivars (strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, black currant, blueberry, gooseberry, chokeberry, cape gooseberry, and gojiberry) were analyzed by SDS-PAGE electrophoresis in combination with advanced chemometric tools. The most important parameters for discrimination among berry seeds were polypeptides at 12.8; 15.1; 25.0; 26.4; 30.0; 41.8; 44.4; 46.0; 48.5; 52.3 and 56.4 kDa. Biomarkers obtained from the protein profile of berry seeds proved to be a powerful tool in the authentication of their botanical origin, as well as for potential detection of berry-based products adulteration.

In this study, 142 pesticide residues in 245 strawberry samples, gathered from farmers markets or supermarkets in Beijing from June 2017 to May 2018, were investigated. The samples were analysed by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). According to the validation data, including linearity, recovery, precision and measurement uncertainty, the method performed well in monitoring pesticide residues and complied with the requirements of the European Guideline SANTE/11813/2017. Among the strawberry samples, 26.0% contained at least one pesticide residue, four of which contained pesticide residues that exceeded the maximum residue limit of China. Carbendazim, pyrimethanil and azoxystrobin were the most frequently detected pesticides in the strawberry samples. Lower bound, middle bound and upper bound values were used to replace left-censored results. In the worst-case scenario, the hazard index (HI) for adults and children was 0.91% and 3.62%, respectively. Carbofuran, bifenazate and pyraclostrobin were identified as the top three contributors to HI.

ABSTRACT: In the present study, a risk assessment of pesticides, phthalates, and heavy metals in strawberries (n = 335) in recent years was conducted by determining the estimated daily intake, target hazard quotient, and hazard index. The study used 128 pesticides, 18 phthalates, and three heavy metals in this determination. It detected 51 pesticide residues in the strawberry samples, and 97.91% samples had levels of at least 1 of the 51 pesticides above the limit of detection. In addition, 2.39% of samples had pesticides higher than the Chinese maximum residue limit. Multiple pesticide residues were detected in most samples. Bis-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, diisobutyl phthalate, and dibutyl phthalate were detected in the strawberry samples, with a high frequency of detection. Their detectable rates were 100, 100, and 89.9%, respectively. In most samples, lead, cadmium, and nickel were detected, with detectable rates 75.76, 92.93, and 92.93%, respectively. The estimated daily intake of analyzed pesticide, phthalate, and heavy metal residues appears to be relatively low compared with the acceptable daily intake. The average target hazard quotients and hazard indices were less than 1. That means that customers who are exposed to the average contaminant levels may not pose a significant health risk. Our results show that the strawberries may be polluted by many kinds of contaminants. Therefore, monitoring of pesticide, phthalate, and heavy metal residues in strawberries should be increasingly developed to fully protect the health of the consumer.

The prevalence of obesity in the world is fearsomely climbing, which has brought about heavy threats on human health and economic development. For coping with this problem, researchers have looked at the profound potentials of natural products for resolving obesity because of their high efficiencies and few undesirable outcomes in the recent years. Berry fruits are huge reservoirs of bioactive components, and their anti-obesity potentials are arousing much interests. In this review, the current main strategies to manage obesity were summarized, including inhibiting appetite and lowering the food intake, improving energy expenditure and thermogenesis, suppressing absorption and digestion, reducing lipid synthesis and storage as well as modulating composition of gut microbiota. In addition, this review discussed the potentials of dietary berry fruits (blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, mulberries, lingonberries, blackberries, black chokeberries, elderberries, bilberries, grape, blackcurrants, jaboticabas, red bayberries, sea-buckthorns, goldenberries and goji berries) to counteract obesity or obesity-associated complications based on recent animal experiments and human studies. Then, the bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds present in berry fruits was discussed. On the other hand, several challenges including securing effective dosage, further understanding their interaction with human tissues, improving bioavailability and protection of functional ingredients during delivery should be taken into account and conquered in the coming years.

Fragaria ananassa (garden strawberry) and Actinidia deliciosa (kiwi) fruits are widely consumed due to their taste and nutritive value however several studies also supports their medicinal uses. Current study was designed to assess the In-Vivo analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activity of ethanol extract of Fragaria ananassa (EEFA), Actinidia deliciosa (EEDA) and their 1:1 combination. Albino Wistar rats were divided into five groups (n=5) for each study comprising of vehicle control, reference standards *(aspirin and paracetamol 100 mg/kg/day), EEFA (800 mg/kg/day), EEAD (800 mg/kg/day) and 1:1 combination of EEFA and EEAD (400 + 400mg/kg/day). The results revealed significant anti-inflammatory potential of EEAD and their combination with 79.35% and 82.03% inhibition in carrageenan induced paw edema whereas 52.54% inhibition was produced by EEFA against control. However most powerful analgesic effect was produced by EEFA with 52.23% at 60 min followed by EEAD (48.38%) and EEFA+ EEAD combination (44.09%). Similarly, EEFA, EEAD and their combination also lowered the rectal temperature in highly significant manner (p< 0.01) against control. These results suggested the possible role of garden strawberry and kiwi in treating the ailments related to pain, inflammation and fever however further studies are required to elucidate the constituents responsible for it and their exact mechanism.

Pyridaben, an inhibitor of mitochondrial electron transport at complex I, is authorized in Egypt as an insecticide/acaricide for strawberries and cucumbers; thus the investigation of residues in the final consumed product is essential as to ensure consumer safety and trade barriers. Therefore, residue trials were conducted according to the in force and more critical Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) as to investigate the dissipation rate of the compound on both crops and the terminal residues in the final products. Results showed that the residue decline fits a first-order decay process with calculated half-lives of 1 and 6.4 days for cucumbers and strawberries, respectively. Dietary risk assessment was performed based on the risk quotients (RQ) method and the EFSA PRIMo model demonstrating that the dietary exposure to pyridaben residues from cucumber and strawberry consumption, applied either according to the in force or more critical GAPs, does not pose unacceptable health risk to Egyptian and European consumers.

A modified QuEChERS method for determining cyenopyrafen in strawberries, mandarins and their processed products was established with a good linearity (R2 > 0.9981), accuracy (recoveries of 83% to 111%) and precision (relative standard deviations of 0.9% to 14%). The limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.01 mg/kg. Field results showed that the half-lives of cyenopyrafen were 6.8 and 11.8 d in strawberry and mandarin respectively, and that the final residues were within established maximum residue limits (MRLs). The household processing factors (PFs) for cyenopyrafen residues in strawberry and mandarin fruits were also studied: residues increased in strawberry jam (PF 1.51) and mandarin juice (1.31) but decreased in strawberries (0.58) and mandarin pulp (<0.17) after washing and peeling, respectively. A risk assessment showed that the risk from long-term dietary exposures to cyenopyrafen was 73.73%, indicating that consuming these products was unlikely to present a public health concern.

BACKGROUND: Cold-pressed berry seed oils are used for consumption and other applications including skin and hair care. They are natural products which gain the attention of customers. In this study, strawberry, raspberry and blackberry seed oils used for cosmetic purposes, purchased from three different European producers, were analyzed. The aim of the study was to assess the quality and oxidative stability of the berry fruit oils, thus they were analyzed after purchase and after 4 and 8 weeks of storage at room temperature. METHODS: Acid and peroxide values were determined in the tested oils, as was oxidative stability, which was measured using pressure differential scanning calorimetry (PDSC). The results show the low quality of the tested oils in terms of oxidative stability (high peroxide values: 21.9-249.6 mEq O2/kg oil). CONCLUSIONS: Based on this study, it is necessary to evaluate the effects of these products on the body. Moreover, standards clarifying the oxidation of cosmetic oils should be set internationally.

Vaccinum myrtillus L., Ribes nigrum L., Rubus fruticosus L., Fragaria vesca L. leaves are considered an agro-waste of the berry industry. Although numerous studies indicate fruit is a rich source of bioactive compounds, the authors prove leaves can also be a valuable source of compounds used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. The study attempts to assess and compare the antioxidant and cytotoxic properties of berry leaves extracts. The total phenolic compounds, flavonoids, anthocyanins and procyanidins content were determined. Antioxidant potential was evaluated using the DPPH radical scavenging method. Cytotoxicity studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of the extracts on the metabolism and proliferation of keratinocytes and fibroblasts in vitro. The effect on the migration capacity of these cells was also assessed. The obtained results show that the examined extracts are a source of valuable bioactive agents. All tested extracts show significant ability to remove free radicals in higher concentrations. Cytotoxicity assessments have shown that leaf extracts of the analyzed plants differ in cytotoxicity, both for keratinocytes and fibroblasts. The results of the assessment of cell migration capacity correlate with cytotoxicity tests, because the concentration of extracts showing cytotoxic activity towards the tested cells also inhibited their migration.
