RESUMO

“Hispanic” and “Latino” (also known as Mestizo) describe a diverse racial and ethnic group, with a range of cultures, languages, and biological ancestry. It includes individuals of Mexican, Central-to-South American, and Spanish-Caribbean (eg, Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Dominican) descent.1 Individuals of Hispanic/Latino race and ethnicity represent a heterogenous group of people with different skin tones and Fitzpatrick phototypes. Hispanic/Latinos are the fastest growing population in the United States (US) - projected to increase from 55 million in 2014 to 119 million in 2060, an increase of 115%.2 By 2060, more than one-quarter (29%) of the US is projected to be Hispanic/Latino.2.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Epidemics are a major cause of health problems in developing countries, preventing the accumulation of human capital and economic growth. On the appearance of the pandemic of the new coronavirus COVID-19 worldwide, this survey was carried out in the 4th week of the occurrence of the cases in Greece. OBJECTIVES: The investigation was aimed at the social and economic impact caused by this COVID-19 pandemic and the state's decision to suspend the operation of businesses and stores in Greece. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and fifty-eight esthetic centers from various areas of Greece were participated in this study, and the questionnaires were sent electronically to the business owners. Statistical analyzes were conducted using Google Forms and the questionnaires analyzed through PSPP software. RESULTS: Based on their answers and the statistical analyzes, it was calculated the reduction of the monthly income for the first month of suspension of the operation of their companies. Additionally, social-related matters were examined as, how they experience this period, psychologically, financially, what problems they believe that they will face, and what changes in their work that could result from the pandemic. DISCUSSION: There is no similar study and experience for esthetic centers from a viral pandemic in literature. The suspension of operations provoked serious financial problems and significant psychological burden about what "tomorrow will bring" with returning to "normalcy."

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The indoor tanning industry is currently receiving increased attention from policymakers, but this industry has not been well researched. Our study examines economic, demographic, and climate-related variables to better understand variations among North Carolina counties in terms of the number of tanning beds and booths per capita during a recent 3-year period. METHODS: This study used regression analysis to estimate the magnitude and statistical significance of correlations between the density of tanning beds and other relevant variables from 2007 through 2009. RESULTS: The number of indoor tanning beds per capita in a county is positively correlated with the county's unemployment rate and with the proportion of the county's population that consists of white females 18-49 years of age; there is also a weakly positive correlation with the number of days per year of hot weather in the county. All else being equal, tanning beds are marginally more common in counties with higher rates of unemployment, with a greater number of days when the temperature exeeds 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and with residents who are more likely to engage in risky behaviors (as measured by the gonorrhea infection rate and the percentage of the population who smoke cigarettes). LIMITATIONS: The data span a 3-year period (2007-2009) during which economic conditions were depressed. CONCLUSION: Economic, demographic, geographic, and climate-related factors should be considered when policies that affect the tanning industry in North Carolina are being developed and implemented.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A survey of all sunbeds in a local authority area was carried out in 1998. Since then, there have been technological developments leading to new 'fast-tan' sunlamps which have become increasingly popular, along with unmanned sun parlours. In addition, new British and European sunbed standards have been set. OBJECTIVES: To discover the commercial uptake of new high power sunlamps and to determine the impact on carcinogenic risk from sunbeds. METHODS: Onsite spectral measurements, traceable to national standards, were conducted at all commercial sunbed premises within two local authorities and a quantitative risk assessment applied to the findings using a skin cancer model. Sunbed users were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their reasons for using a sunbed and the risk associated with its use. RESULTS: We found a 30% increase in the number of privately operated sunbeds since our 1998 survey. The median cancer-weighted exposure of all 133 sunbeds was comparable to that of Mediterranean sunlight. This was a significant increase compared to 1998. Moreover, 83% of sunbeds produced ultraviolet (UV) B radiation levels that exceeded the European standard. Fifteen per cent of respondents thought that there were no risks from use of sunbeds. CONCLUSIONS: Sunbeds in current use carry a cancer risk comparable to Mediterranean sunlight. This is due to the use of new high power lamps. New British and European standards are being largely ignored with more than four out of five sunbeds exceeding the limit specified in the standard. There is a strong case for regulation of sunbed operators coupled to improved public education.

RESUMO

Little is known about the use of sunless tanning products in the United States. This report describes the prevalence and correlates of sunless tanning use, comparing exclusive sunless tanners, exclusive indoor tanners, both sunless and indoor tanners, and non-tanners with respect to sociodemographic and sun protection behaviors.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to examine the number of tanning facilities in select U.S. cities. The twenty most populated cities from each of 4 U.S. regions were selected for the sample. For each city, data on the number of tanning facilities, climate, and general demographic profile were collected. Data for state tanning facility legislation also were collected. A tanning facility density variable was created by dividing the city's number of facilities by its population size. The 80 cities had an average of 50 facilities each. Results of linear regression analysis indicated that higher density was significantly associated with colder climate, lower median income, and higher proportion of Whites. These data indicate that indoor tanning facilities are prevalent in the environments of U.S. urban-dwellers. Cities having the higher density profile may be logical targets for interventions promoting less or safer use of these facilities.
