Purpose: Our goal is to describe the contrast and blur sensitivity of multiple horizontal disparity subsystems and to relate them to the contrast and spatial sensitivities of their monocular inputs. Methods: Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) amplitudes were recorded in response to dynamic random dot stereograms (DRDSs) alternating at 2 Hz between zero disparity and varying magnitudes of crossed disparity for disparity plane and disparity grating stimuli. Half-image contrasts ranged between 2.5% and 80% and over a range of Gaussian blurs from 1.4 to 12 arcmin. Separate experiments measured contrast and blur sensitivity for the monocular half-images. Results: The first and second harmonics disparity responses were maximal for disparity gratings and for the disparity plane condition, respectively. The first harmonic of the disparity grating response was more affected by both contrast and blur than was the second harmonic of the disparity plane response, which had higher contrast sensitivity than the first harmonic. Conclusions: The corrugation frequency, contrast, and blur tuning of the first harmonic suggest that it reflects activity of neurons tuned to higher luminance spatial frequencies that are selective for relative disparity, whereas the second harmonic reflects the activity of neurons sensitive to absolute disparity that are driven by low monocular spatial frequencies. Translational Relevance: SSVEPs to DRDSs provide two objective neural measures of disparity processing, the first harmonic-whose stimulus preferences are similar to those of behavioral stereoacuity-and the second harmonic that represents an independent disparity-specific but not necessarily stereoscopic mechanism.

Fatigue deteriorates the performance of a brain-computer interface (BCI) system; thus, reliable detection of fatigue is the first step to counter this problem. The fatigue evaluated by means of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals has been studied in many research projects, but widely different results have been reported. Moreover, there is scant research when considering the fatigue on steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI. Therefore, nowadays, fatigue detection is not a completely solved topic. In the current work, the issues found in the literature that led to the differences in the results are identified and saved by performing a new experiment on an SSVEP-based BCI system. The experiment was long enough to produce fatigue in the users, and different SSVEP stimulation ranges were used. Additionally, the EEG features commonly reported in the literature (EEG rhythms powers, SNR, etc.) were calculated as well as newly proposed features (spectral features and Lempel-Ziv complexity). The analysis was carried out on O1, Oz and O2 channels. This work found a tendency of displacement from high-frequency rhythms to low-frequency ones, and thus, better EEG features should present a similar behaviour. Then, the 'relative power' of EEG rhythms, the rates (θ + α)/ß, α/ß and θ/ß, some spectral features (central and mean frequencies, asymmetry and kurtosis coefficients, etc.) and Lempel-Ziv complexity are proposed as reliable EEG features for fatigue detection. Hence, this set of features may be used to construct a more trustworthy fatigue index.

PURPOSE: To describe the unexpected one-year course of a probable Tobacco Alcohol Optic Neuropathy (TAON) and the unprecedented Laser Speckle Flowgraphy (LSFG) assessment. CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old Caucasian man with no family history of visual impairment referred because of unilateral and painless visual acuity (VA) decrease in the right eye (RE). Also, color vision and visual evoked potentials were unilaterally altered. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), instead, revealed bilateral thinning of the macular ganglion cell inner plexiform layer. Funduscopy, intraocular pressure, pupillary shape/reactivity and ocular motility were normal. Blood testing revealed macrocytic/normochromic anemia and low levels of vitamin B2 and folic acid. The patient admitted heavy tobacco and alcohol intake for many years. After an initial compliance to the prescribed regimen, the patient quitted the vitamin intake and resumed his smoking and drinking habits. After a 13-month follow up the VA further reduced in the RE; the fellow eye preserved normal visual function despite the bilateral and progressive alterations of the OCT assessment. Both eyes underwent LSFG examination. All the conventional nets evaluated by the instrument (i.e., Mean Tissue, Mean All and Mean Vascular perfusion) were lower in the RE. CONCLUSIONS: Based on patient's behavior, visual deficiencies and laboratory findings, we assumed that the patient suffered from TAON. Also after one year, however, a deep discrepancy between the strictly unilateral, progressive VA impairment and the bilateral, symmetrical OCT alterations persisted. The LSFG data clearly indicate that the perfusion of the two eyes differed, especially referring to tissular vascularization in the optic nerve head area of the RE.

Background: Amblyopia is a case where one or less commonly, both eyes have impaired visual performance, even with the best optical correction and no visible disease of the visual system. Objectives: To assess contrast sensitivity tests (CST) and pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEP) results in amblyopic children who have already started occlusion therapy for durations ranging from 6 to 12 months. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 eyes of 50 patients with monocular amblyopia and 50 age and sex matched controls. Both patients and controls underwent ophthalmological assessment, PVEP, and CST. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the results of P100 latencies of qualitative PVEP in amblyopic eyes compared to non-amblyopic eyes and control eyes, while the qualitative CST showed a highly statistically significant difference, being affected in 98% of amblyopic eyes compared to unaffected eyes (4%) and control eyes (4%). The maximum contrast level and minimal contrast level of quantitative CST were significantly lower in amblyopic eyes compared to non-amblyopic and control eyes. The cutoff value of maximal contrast level at mean frequencies of 2.5 ± 0.9 Hz, and a range of (1.1-4.1) for amblyopic eyes is ≤21 dB, while the cutoff value of minimal contrast level at mean frequencies of 13.4 ± 2.6 Hz, and a range of (6.7-18) for amblyopic eyes is ≤12 dB. Conclusion: Detection of amblyopia by CST is a noninvasive and easy procedure, which represents a promising tool to support the diagnosis of amblyopia.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the characteristics and objective assessment method of visual field defects caused by optic chiasm and its posterior visual pathway injury. METHODS: Typical cases of visual field defects caused by injuries to the optic chiasm, optic tracts, optic radiations, and visual cortex were selected. Visual field examinations, visual evoked potential (VEP) and multifocal visual evolved potential (mfVEP) measurements, craniocerebral CT/MRI, and retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) were performed, respectively, and the aforementioned visual electrophysiological and neuroimaging indicators were analyzed comprehensively. RESULTS: The electrophysiological manifestations of visual field defects caused by optic chiasm injuries were bitemporal hemianopsia mfVEP abnormalities. The visual field defects caused by optic tract, optic radiation, and visual cortex injuries were all manifested homonymous hemianopsia mfVEP abnormalities contralateral to the lesion. Mild relative afferent pupil disorder (RAPD) and characteristic optic nerve atrophy were observed in hemianopsia patients with optic tract injuries, but not in patients with optic radiation or visual cortex injuries. Neuroimaging could provide morphological evidence of damages to the optic chiasm and its posterior visual pathway. CONCLUSIONS: Visual field defects caused by optic chiasm, optic tract, optic radiation, and visual cortex injuries have their respective characteristics. The combined application of mfVEP and static visual field measurements, in combination with neuroimaging, can maximize the assessment of the location and degree of visual pathway damage, providing an effective scheme for the identification of such injuries.

This study aimed to improve the performance of single-channel steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based visual acuity assessment by mode decomposition methods. Using the SSVEP dataset induced by the vertical sinusoidal gratings at six spatial frequency steps from 11 subjects, 3-40-Hz band-pass filtering and other four mode decomposition methods, i.e., empirical mode decomposition (EMD), ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), improved complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (ICEEMDAN), and variational mode decomposition (VMD), were used to preprocess the single-channel SSVEP signals from Oz electrode. After comparing the SSVEP signal characteristics corresponding to each mode decomposition method, the visual acuity threshold estimation criterion was used to obtain the final visual acuity results. The agreement between subjective Freiburg Visual Acuity and Contrast Test (FrACT) and SSVEP visual acuity for band-pass filtering (-0.095 logMAR), EMD (-0.112 logMAR), EEMD (-0.098 logMAR), ICEEMDAN (-0.093 logMAR), and VMD (-0.090 logMAR) was all pretty good, with an acceptable difference between FrACT and SSVEP acuity for band-pass filtering (0.129 logMAR), EMD (0.083 logMAR), EEMD (0.120 logMAR), ICEEMDAN (0.103 logMAR), and VMD (0.108 logMAR), finding that the visual acuity obtained by these four mode decompositions had a lower limit of agreement and a lower or close difference compared to the traditional band-pass filtering method. This study proved that the mode decomposition methods can enhance the performance of single-channel SSVEP-based visual acuity assessment, and also recommended ICEEEMDAN as the mode decomposition method for single-channel electroencephalography (EEG) signal denoising in the SSVEP visual acuity assessment.

BACKGROUND: Determining the cause of visual deterioration in idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) patients is of clinical necessity. This study aimed to study the effect of chronic increased ICP on the retina and optic nerve through objective electrophysiological measures in chronic IIH patients. METHODS: Thirty patients with chronic IIH and thirty age and sex-matched healthy controls were included in this study. Papilledema grade and CSF pressure were evaluated in the patients' group. Both groups were submitted to visual evoked potentials (VEP) and multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG). RESULT: The mean value of P100 latencies of the right and left on two check sizes, 1 deg and 15m in chronic IIH patients, was significantly delayed than controls (P-value < 0.001 for each). Chronic IIH patients showed a significantly lower amplitude of the right and left R1, R2, R3, R4 & R5 compared to controls (P-value < 0.001, < 0.001) (P-value < 0.001, < 0.001) (P-value < 0.001, < 0.001) (P-value < 0.001, = 0.001) (P-value = 0.002, < 0.001), respectively. Also, patients showed a significantly delayed peak time of the right and left R1 and R2 compared to controls (P-value < 0.001, < 0.001) (P-value = 0.001, = 0.009), respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between each of CSF pressure and papilledema grade with right and left PVEP latencies. In contrast, there was no statistically significant correlation between either CSF pressure or papilledema grade and PVEP amplitudes in both eyes. CONCLUSION: In chronic IIH patients, both optic nerve dysfunction and central retinal changes were identified, supported by VEP and the mfERG findings.

INTRODUCTION: Visual electrophysiology tests require the use of precise and calibrated visual display units (VDUs). Existing VDUs for presenting structured stimuli are now mostly obsolete, with modern solutions limited or unsuitable for clinical testing. Digital light processing (DLP) laser projectors have recently become commercially available and this study aimed to assess their suitability as VDUs for visual electrophysiology testing. METHODS: This study consisted of two sections. The first was a photometric study of two DLP laser projectors (Viewsonic LS831WU and HiSense 100L5FTUK) to assess luminance, contrast, spectral and temporal characteristics of the stimulus. The second was a physiological study comparing pattern electroretinograms (PERG) and visual evoked potentials (PVEPs) amplitudes and peak-times recorded using a DLP laser projector, photometrically and spatially matched to existing plasma VDUs at our institution (Pioneer Electronics Corporation, PDP422MXE). RESULTS: The Viewsonic DLP laser projector was capable of high luminance levels (0-587.5 cd/m2) whilst maintaining contrast above 93%. The temporal properties showed fast rise and fall times of 0.5-1 ms and 0.5-1 ms, respectively, without any transient luminance change with reversals. The device required a warm-up time of at least 2 min until reaching near maximal luminance. The second (Hisense) device was observed to have a detrimental input lag jitter so was not used for any further analysis. PERGs and PVEPs showed high agreement and correlation (r = 0.766-0.905) between the Viewsonic DLP device and existing plasma VDUs. No significant differences were observed for P50 and P100 peak-time (p = > 0.05), however P50, N95 and P100 amplitudes were all significantly larger for the DLP device (p = < 0.05). DISCUSSION: The DLP laser projector tested in this study is a viable and practical replacement VDU for clinical electrophysiology tests of vision. The device is easily capable of meeting ISCEV standards, and showed PERG and PVEP amplitudes larger than existing systems despite photometric and spatial matching. The DLP laser projectors are capable of very large field sizes so are beneficial for paediatric testing or those wishing to examine large field responses. Importantly, it was observed that some devices may suffer input lag jitter, therefore, individual calibration and assessment of DLP projection systems is an important consideration before clinical implementation.

INTRODUCTION: Neurotoxicity, including optic nerve injury, is one of the most common adverse effects of tacrolimus, the principal calcineurin inhibitor used after kidney transplantation (KTx). The electrophysiologic measurements of both pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEP) and flash visual evoked potentials (FVEP) are valuable when drug-induced optic neuropathy is suspected. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether VEP measurement is a sensitive and repeatable method for monitoring tacrolimus neurotoxicity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective study focused on 35 patients (20 M, 15F, 69 eyes, mean age 43 ± 11 years) who were at a median of 3.0 (IQR, 2.2-3.7) months after KTx at the time of the initial VEP evaluation and were treated with tacrolimus since KTx. The follow-up VEP examination was done after a median of 24 (22-27) months (both VEP measurements followed the ISCEV standards). The P100 wave latency and amplitude for the 1° and 15' PVEP simulations, and the P2 wave latency and amplitude for the FVEP were analyzed. RESULTS: For the 1° checks, the P100 wave latency and amplitude values were significantly worse in the follow-up examination compared to the early post-transplant time-point. Independent associations between FVEP parameters and the tacrolimus blood trough level were observed in the follow-up examination but not at the early post-transplant period. The P2 wave latency correlated with the tacrolimus trough level only in patients treated with the twice-daily, but not the once-daily, tacrolimus formulation. The brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) level correlated with the P100 (15') latency (R = 0.499; p = 0.005) and the P2 latency (R = 0.409; p = 0.025) only in patients treated with the once-daily, but not the twice-daily, tacrolimus formulation. CONCLUSION: The observations in this study may support the rationale for the use of VEP measurements as non-invasive monitoring of subclinical tacrolimus neurotoxicity.

This study details the development of a novel, approx. £20 electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) intended to offer a financially and operationally accessible device that can be deployed on a mass scale to facilitate education and public engagement in the domain of EEG sensing and neurotechnologies. Real-time decoding of steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) is achieved using variations of the widely-used canonical correlation analysis (CCA) algorithm: multi-set CCA and generalised CCA. All BCI functionality is executed on board an inexpensive ESP32 microcontroller. SSVEP decoding accuracy of 95.56 ± 3.74% with an ITR of 102 bits/min was achieved with modest calibration.

Recent technological development requires new approaches to address the problem of blindness. Such approaches need to be able to ensure that no cells with photosensitive capability remain in the retina. The presented model, Opn4-/- × Pde6brd10/rd10 (O×Rd) double mutant murine, is a combination of a mutation in the Pde6b gene (photoreceptor degeneration) together with a deletion of the Opn4 gene (responsible for the expression of melanopsin in the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells). This model has been characterized and compared with those of WT mice and murine animal models displaying both mutations separately. A total loss of pupillary reflex was observed. Likewise, behavioral tests demonstrated loss of rejection to illuminated spaces and a complete decrease in visual acuity (optomotor test). Functional recordings showed an absolute disappearance of various wave components of the full-field and pattern electroretinogram (fERG, pERG). Likewise, visual evoked potential (VEP) could not be recorded. Immunohistochemical staining showed marked degeneration of the outer retinal layers and the absence of melanopsin staining. The combination of both mutations has generated an animal model that does not show any photosensitive element in its retina. This model is a potential tool for the study of new ophthalmological approaches such as optosensitive agents.

PURPOSE: To study the capabilities of electrophysiological and psychophysical examination methods for assessment of the functional state of ganglion cells, retina and optic nerve in patients with hereditary optic neuropathy (HON). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 60 patients (118 eyes) with a genetically confirmed diagnosis of HON. All study patients underwent visual field test (VFT), spectral optical coherence tomography (OCT), flash and pattern visual evoked potentials (VEP) (Flash-VEP, FVEP; Pattern-VEP, PVEP), photopic electroretinography with photonegative response (PhNR) registration and the color vision test. In 24 patients (46 eyes), these parameters were assessed before the start of treatment and one year later. The treatment involved the mitochondria-targeted antioxidant SkQ1 - plastoquinonyl-decyl-triphenylphosphonium bromide (PDTP) in the form of eye drops. RESULTS: The main PVEP components for 1.0° and 0.3° were registered in 20% and in 14% of patient eyes with HON and high visual functions, respectively. After one year of PDTP use, a significant decrease in P100 peak latency was found only in the group with disease duration of ≤1.5 years as of the time of treatment start (p<0.05). Significant differences were observed in the PhNR amplitude (p<0.004) between patients of the main and the control groups, as well as in the PhNR amplitude between patients with visual acuity of ≤0.1 and ≥0.13 (p<0.01). Patients with high visual functions were found to have a correlation between the PhNR amplitude, GCC thickness and the global loss index (GLV). CONCLUSION: Along with VFT, OCT and color vision tests, electrophysiological studies are one of the main methods of examining patients with HON. After one year of PDTP use, there was a significant decrease in the FVEP P2 peak latency in the group with a disease duration of ≤1.5 years as of the time of treatment start. The PhNR amplitude in patients with high visual functions was found to correlate with structural changes in the ganglion cell layer and the retinal nerve fiber layer.

Cortical processing of binocular disparity is believed to begin in V1 where cells are sensitive to absolute disparity, followed by the extraction of relative disparity in higher visual areas. While much is known about the cortical distribution and spatial tuning of disparity-selective neurons, the relationship between their spatial and temporal properties is less well understood. Here, we use steady-state Visual Evoked Potentials and dynamic random dot stereograms to characterize the temporal dynamics of spatial mechanisms in human visual cortex that are primarily sensitive to either absolute or relative disparity. Stereograms alternated between disparate and non-disparate states at 2 Hz. By varying the disparity-defined spatial frequency content of the stereograms from a planar surface to corrugated ones, we biased responses towards absolute vs. relative disparities. Reliable Components Analysis was used to derive two dominant sources from the 128 channel EEG records. The first component (RC1) was maximal over the occipital pole. In RC1, first harmonic responses were sustained, tuned for corrugation frequency, and sensitive to the presence of disparity references, consistent with prior psychophysical sensitivity measurements. By contrast, the second harmonic, associated with transient processing, was not spatially tuned and was indifferent to references, consistent with it being generated by an absolute disparity mechanism. Thus, our results reveal a duplex coding strategy in the disparity domain, where relative disparities are computed via sustained mechanisms and absolute disparities are computed via transient mechanisms.

OBJECTIVE: Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) can provide insight into disease activity in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). However, few studies have tracked concurrent changes in VEPs and cognitive functioning over time in MS. To address this, we examined the longitudinal relationship between VEP and cognitive performance in PwMS over a two-year period. METHODS: At baseline (T1) and follow-up (T2, 2.14 years after baseline, on average), P100 peak latency and inter-ocular latency (IOL) between eyes were calculated from the VEP elicited for checkerboard pattern-reversal stimuli. Cognitive performance was assessed for seven different domains (NeuroTrax battery). The potential for VEP variables to predict the T1-to-T2 change in cognitive performance was assessed in a series of multiple linear regression models. RESULTS: Baseline IOL and VEP latency were significantly associated with T1-to-T2 change in information processing speed. Post-hoc analyses indicated that PwMS that had both prolonged VEP latency and elevated IOL at baseline tended to exhibit greater information processing speed decline. Increase in VEP latency from T1-to-T2 was also associated with decline in psychomotor function over time. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide evidence that VEP measures can serve as valuable prognostic indicators of longitudinal cognitive change in PwMS. SIGNIFICANCE: Visual system neurophysiology corresponds with changes in speeded cognitive performance in MS.

The authors present aspects of Professor Dawson's biography and a review of his work on the EPs and, mainly, the article reveals the new technique in detail that would allow the growth of the clinical application of the visual, auditory, and somatosensory EPs.


RESUMO Em 1951 o fisiologista George Duncan Dawson apresentou seu trabalho com a promediação de sinal nos potenciais evocados, abrindo uma nova etapa no desenvolvimento da neurofisiologia clínica. Os autores apresentam aspectos da biografia do professor Dawson e uma revisão de seus trabalhos sobre os potenciais evocados, principalmente do artigo que mostrava a nova técnica, que viria a permitir o crescimento da aplicação clínica dos potenciais evocados visual, auditivo e somatossensitivo.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the significance of visual evoked potentials (VEP) in the early diagnosis of optic neuritis (ON) and detecting clinically silent lesions in pediatric multiple sclerosis (PedMS). This study represents one of the largest series of PedMS which evaluated characteristics of VEP in PedMS patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective study on 52 PedMS patients, aged 7-17 years. VEP analysis were done for all patients, after the first attack of disease and were compared to control subjects according to the pattern-reversal VEP findings. RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 15.65 ± 1.89 years with male to female ratio of 16 (30.8%): 36 (69.2%). All of the patients had a relapsing-remitting course of the disease. ON was discovered on the initial attack in 18 (34.6%) patients, while 30 (57.7%) patients had ON in the second attack. Pathological VEP findings were present in 40 (76.9%) patients, of which 22 (42.3%) PedMS patients had clinically silent lesions. Prolonged latency of P100 waves in the PedMS group was statistically significant when compared to control subjects. The amplitude N1P1 showed a correlation with residual visual deficit. CONCLUSION: Our results show that ON is a common initial manifestation of PedMS in the Serbian PedMS population. The prolonged P100 latency is the main indicator of ON. VEP is an objective, fast and accessible diagnostic method for detecting clinical and subclinical lesions. Thus, VEP deserves evaluation to be considered as an additional criterion for PedMS diagnosis.

Objective.Present methods for assessing color vision require the person's active participation. Here we describe a brain-computer interface-based method for assessing color vision that does not require the person's participation.Approach.This method uses steady-state visual evoked potentials to identify metamers-two light sources that have different spectral distributions but appear to the person to be the same color.Main results.We demonstrate that: minimization of the visual evoked potential elicited by two flickering light sources identifies the metamer; this approach can distinguish people with color-vision deficits from those with normal color vision; and this metamer-identification process can be automated.Significance.This new method has numerous potential clinical, scientific, and industrial applications.

OBJECTIVES: To fill the existing research gap related to long-term costs of postacute care in methanol poisoning survivors, healthcare cost for 6 years after the outbreak has been modelled and estimated. DESIGN: In a prospective longitudinal cohort study, data collected from 55 survivors of the Czech methanol mass poisoning outbreak in 2012 were collected in four rounds (5 months, then 2, 4 and 6 years after the discharge) in the General University Hospital in Prague according to the same predefined study protocol. The collected data were used to inform the cost model. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: All 83 patients discharged from a hospital poisoning treatment after the 2012 methanol outbreak were informed about the study and invited to participate. Fifty-five patients (66%) gave their written informed consent and were followed until their death or the last follow-up 6 years later. The costs were modelled from the Czech healthcare service (general health insurance) perspective. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Long-term national budget impact of the methanol poisoning outbreak, frequencies of sequelae and their average costs. RESULTS: The postacute cost analysis concentrated on visual and neurological sequelae that were shown to be dominant. Collected data were used to create process maps portraying gradual changes in long-term sequelae over time. Individual process maps were created for the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, sequelae detected during eye examinations and sequelae concerning the visual evoked potentials. Based on the process maps the costs of the postacute outpatient care were estimated. CONCLUSIONS: In 2013-2019 the highest costs per patient related to postacute care were found in the first year; the average costs decreased afterwards, and remained almost constant for the rest of the studied period of time. These costs per patient ranged from CZK4142 in 2013 to CZK1845 in 2018, when they raised to CZK2519 in 2019 again.

Horizontal disparities between the two eyes' retinal images are the primary cue for depth. Commonly used random ot tereograms (RDS) intentionally camouflage the disparity cue, breaking the correlations between monocular image structure and the depth map that are present in natural images. Because of the nonlinear nature of visual processing, it is unlikely that simple computational rules derived from RDS will be sufficient to explain binocular vision in natural environments. In order to understand the interplay between natural scene structure and disparity encoding, we used a depth-image-based-rendering technique and a library of natural 3D stereo pairs to synthesize two novel stereogram types in which monocular scene content was manipulated independent of scene depth information. The half-images of the novel stereograms comprised either random-dots or scrambled natural scenes, each with the same depth maps as the corresponding natural scene stereograms. Using these stereograms in a simultaneous Event-Related Potential and behavioral discrimination task, we identified multiple disparity-contingent encoding stages between 100 ~ 500 msec. The first disparity sensitive evoked potential was observed at ~100 msec after an earlier evoked potential (between ~50-100 msec) that was sensitive to the structure of the monocular half-images but blind to disparity. Starting at ~150 msec, disparity responses were stereogram-specific and predictive of perceptual depth. Complex features associated with natural scene content are thus at least partially coded prior to disparity information, but these features and possibly others associated with natural scene content interact with disparity information only after an intermediate, 2D scene-independent disparity processing stage.
