RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Based on a donation of more than 1000 Swiss dog license tags to the museum of veterinary medical history in Zurich, historic dog license taxes and tags are compared between Switzerland and other European countries. In 2006 the microchip was launched as mandatory identification for dogs in Switzerland and dog license tags became redundant.

Avec l'introduction de l'identification des chiens au moyen d'une puce électronique en 2006, il n'était plus nécessaire de remettre ces médailles.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between radiographic fit/fill measurements and biomechanical performance of three canine cementless total hip implant designs using an in vitro biomechanical testing protocol that replicates compression and torsion. STUDY DESIGN: Eighteen (six/group) canine cadaveric femurs were implanted with one of three cementless total hip implant designs: (1) collarless, (2) collared or (3) lateral bolt stems. Femoral length, canal flare index (CFI), canal fill, stem fit, stem level and stem angle were measured as independent variables. Biomechanical performance was tested using physiological, non-destructive gait loading (loading protocols) and destructive testing (failure protocols). RESULTS: During loading protocols, compressive stiffness was influenced by stem level (p < 0.05) and torsional stiffness was influenced by stem level and CFI for collarless stems (p < 0.05). During failure protocols, peak load was influenced by mediolateral (ML) stem angle (p < 0.05) and CFI (p < 0.01) for collarless stems and CFI for lateral bolt stems (p < 0.05). Peak torque was influenced by ML stem angle, craniocaudal stem angle and CFI for collarless stems (p < 0.05) and average ML fill for collared stems (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Biomechanical performance of collarless stems in cementless hip arthroplasty is more impacted by radiographic fit/fill than lateral bolt and collared stems. As a result, collarless stems may be more dependent on preoperative fit and intraoperative precision.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the evaluation of anatomical stifle structures with respect to implant positioning after tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) using a titanium plate. METHODS: Selected sagittal and dorsal sequences of pre- and postoperative MRI (1.0 T scanner) of 13 paired (n = 26) sound cadaveric stifle joints were evaluated. The effect of susceptibility artifact on adjacent anatomical stifle structures was graded from 0 to 5. The impact of implant positioning regarding assessment score was calculated using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. RESULTS: Sagittal turbo spin echo (TSE)-acquired images enabled interpretation of most soft tissue, osseous and cartilage structures without detrimental effect of susceptibility artifact distortions. In T2-weighted TSE images, the cranial cruciate ligament and caudal horn of the medial meniscus could be evaluated, independent of implant position, without any susceptibility artifact in all specimens. T2-weighted fast field echo, water selective, balanced fast field echo and short tau inversion recovery were most markedly affected by susceptibility artifact. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: In selected TSE sequences, MRI allows evaluation of critical intra-articular structures after titanium TPLO plate implantation. Further investigations with confirmed stifle pathologies in dogs are required, to evaluate the accuracy of MRI after TPLO in clinical cases in this context.

The first aim of this study was to establish a surgical procedure to implant a new telemetric device for the continuous recording of electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood pressure (BP) in freely moving pigs. A second aim was the functional assessment of cardiovascular parameters, including heart rate variability (HRV) and blood pressure variability (BPV), so that these data could be used as the basis for the objective evaluation of autonomic activity and balance in different behavioural contexts. Eleven domestic pigs (German Landrace) underwent surgery for the placement of a telemetric device. At day 15 after surgery, 512 consecutive inter-beat intervals and pressure waves were analysed using different detection methods (automatic and manually corrected) while the animals were resting or feeding, respectively. HRV and BPV were calculated. Incomplete datasets were found in four pigs due to missing ECG or BP signals. Technical and surgical issues concerning catheterisation and detachment of the negative ECG lead were continuously improved. In the remaining pigs, excellent signal quality (manually corrected data of 1%) was obtained during resting and acceptable signal quality (<10%) was obtained during feeding. Automatic triggering was sufficiently reliable to eliminate errors in BP recordings during active behaviour, but this was not the case for ECG recordings. Sympathetic arousal with accompanying vagal withdrawal during feeding was documented. The established surgical implantation and functional assessment of the telemetric system with the reliable registration of cardiovascular parameters in freely moving pigs could serve as a basis for future studies of autonomic regulation in context of stress and animal welfare.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: There is continuing debate on the clinical benefit of laryngoplasty (LP) in the treatment of equine laryngeal paralysis. In particular, there is little information available on the clinical value of this surgery in older horses, in non-Thoroughbreds or in sports or pleasure horses; nor on the relationship between the degree of LP abduction achieved and the clinical value of LP. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the owner's assessment of the value of LP (and combined ventriculocordectomy) in an older, mixed breed and mixed workload population of horses and to also assess the relationship between the degree of LP abduction present and the clinical value of this surgery. METHODS: A study (1986-1998) of 200 horses of mixed breed and workload, median age 6 years (prospective 136 cases and retrospective 64 cases) undergoing LP and ventriculocordectomy was undertaken. The degree of laryngoplasty abduction achieved and maintained was semiquantitatively evaluated using a 5-grade system. RESULTS: A survey of 198 owners, a median of 19 months after LP surgery, showed that 91% of cases had returned to full work and 3% to reduced work, including 95% of horses with good (Grade 2) laryngoplasty abduction at 6 weeks after surgery, 91% with moderate (Grade 3) abduction, 88% of cases with minsimal (Grade 4) abduction and just 25% of cases with total loss of surgical abduction (Grade 5). Once back in work, 73% of cases were reported to make no abnormal exercise-related noises ('noises') at exercise, with reduced 'noises' reported in some of the 21% of horses that still made 'noises'. In the other 6% of cases, owners were unsure if 'noises' were present. The absence or presence of 'noises' once back at work correlated significantly with the degree of surgical arytenoid abduction present at 6 weeks after LP. Once back in work, 'noises' were less commonly detected in sports and pleasure horses (absent in 76% of cases) than in racehorses (absent in 60%) of cases. Exercise performance following surgery was reported to be markedly increased in 75% of cases, with 10% showing no difference in exercise performance, 3% showing worse performance, and owners unsure of any effect on exercise performance in 13% of cases. Improved work was reported in 70% of sports and pleasure horses and in 67% of racehorses. Overall, 86% of owners believed LP was worthwhile, 7% believed it was not worthwhile and 6% were unsure of its value. Surgery was reported to be of most benefit to sports horses (e.g. reported worthwhile for 100% of show jumpers) and of least benefit to National Hunt (long distance) racehorses where 71% of owners believed it to be worthwhile. CONCLUSIONS AND POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: Most horse-owners believe that LP and combined ventriculocordectomy are of clinical value, especially in sports and pleasure horses. Large scale physiological studies on clinical cases, pre- and post operatively, are required to examine more critically the value of such surgery.

We examined whether heart rate (HR) could be used to estimate energy expenditure (EE) in cattle. Six Hereford heifers (345 +/- 10.8 kg BW) 12 mo of age were implanted with HR radio transmitters and maintained in individual pens under the following treatments: 1) shade or sun exposure, 2) high- or low-energy diet, and 3) feeding in morning or afternoon. The HR of animals was measured every .5 h during 3 mo; measurements of oxygen consumption and HR were made simultaneously in the morning and in the afternoon while animals were resting and exercising. Average daily HR (52 +/- 4 beats/min) and average daily EE (380 +/- 9 kJ/kg(.75)) in animals on the low-energy diet were less than values in animals on the high-energy diet (94 +/- 4 beats/min and 653 +/- 9 kJ/ kg(.75), respectively). For each animal and within each diet, linear regressions best described the relationship between HR and EE in resting animals, whereas quadratic regressions best described this relationship for exercising animals. The quadratic equation for the exercising animals could also be used for resting animals. In addition, a constant value of EE per heart beat (EE pulse) for each individual resting animal was found and gave accurate estimations. This method was convenient because 1) no exercise equipment was needed to generate the regression equations and 2) EE pulse was less affected by diet than was EE estimated by regression equations. We conclude that HR, a relatively easy measurement, can be useful and accurate in estimating EE. To increase the accuracy of the estimation of EE by HR, the relationship of HR to EE should be established for each animal. In addition, the nutritional regimen for the animal in which EE is estimated should be used for the animal in establishing the relationship.

RESUMO

The results of an assessment of carbon fibre for biological use are given, with particular reference to the clinical use of the material in the treatment of equine tendon injury. Biocompatability of the fibres is assessed using fibroblast cell cultures and replacement of normal tendon with carbon fibre prostheses in experimental animals. The rationale and technique for using this material in clinical cases of tendon injury in the racehorse are described. Results are given from 62 implant operations in a limited series of 40 horses.
