BACKGROUND: Research on Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) is still in its early stages, with few studies available to identify and predict effective indicators of this disease. On the other hand, early diagnosis and intervention are crucial to reduce the burden of MAFLD. Therefore, the aim of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of eleven anthropometric indices and their appropriate cut-off values as a non-invasive method to predict and diagnose MAFLD in the Iranian population. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed baseline data from the Hoveyzeh Cohort Study, a prospective population-based study conducted in Iran that enrolled a total of 7836 subjects aged 35 to 70 years from May 2016 through August 2018. RESULTS: The optimal cut-off values of anthropometric indices for predicting MAFLD risk were determined for waist circumference(WC) (102.25 cm for males and 101.45 cm for females), body mass index (BMI) (27.80 kg/m2 for males and 28.75 kg/m2 for females), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) (0.96 for both males and females), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) (0.56 for males and 0.63 for females), body adiposity index (BAI) (23.24 for males and 32.97 for females), visceral adiposity index (VAI) (1.64 for males and 1.88 for females), weight-adjusted waist index (WWI) (10.63 for males and 11.71 for females), conicity index (CI) (1.29 for males and 1.36 for females), body roundness index (BRI) (4.52 for males and 6.45 for females), relative fat mass (RFM) (28.18 for males and 44.91 for females) and abdominal volume index (AVI) (18.85 for males and for 21.37 females). VAI in males (sensitivity: 77%, specificity: 60%, Youden's Index: 0.37) and RFM in females (sensitivity: 76%, specificity: 59%, Youden's Index: 0.35) were found to have higher sensitivity and specificity compared to other anthropometric indices. Furthermore, anthropometric indices demonstrated statistically significant correlations with various hepatic and cardiometabolic indices. Among these, the strongest positive correlations were observed between WC, BMI, BAI, BRI, and AVI with the Hepatic Steatosis Index (HSI), TyG-BMI, and TyG-WC, as well as between VAI and the Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP), Lipid Accumulation Product (LAP), Cardiometabolic Index (CMI), and the Triglyceride and Glucose (TyG) Index. CONCLUSION: Anthropometric indices are effective in predicting MAFLD risk among Iranian adults, with WWI, VAI, and RFM identified as the strongest predictors. The proposed cutoff values could serve as a straightforward and non-invasive methods for the early diagnosis of MAFLD.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Obesity is considered a major public health concern. The aim of the study is to compare anthropometric indicators related to overweight and obesity by place of residence in a local community with a high social deprivation rate, based on the example of residents of the Janów District in eastern Poland, taking into account gender strata differences. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The cross-sectional epidemiological study was carried out in a study group of 3,752 individuals. The following anthropometric measurements and laboratory tests were performed to identify the anthropometric indicators related to overweight and obesity: body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and body adiposity index (BAI). RESULTS: Mean age of the study group was 51.92 ± 8.15. Overweight and obesity-related indicators were more prevalent in rural than urban areas among women, and were as follows: BMI (28.77 ± 5.37 vs. 27.62 ± 5.09; p < 0.001), WHR (0.87 ± 0.07 vs. 0.85 ± 0.07; p < 0.001), WHtR (0.57 ± 0.09 vs. 0.57 ± 0.08; p < 0.001) and BAI (33.58 ± 5.48 vs. 32.82 ± 5.4; p = 0.002). Men's mean WHR was higher in rural than in urban areas (0.96 ± 0.07 vs. 0.95 ± 0.62; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The study shows that women living in rural areas had a mean BMI that was 1.1 higher than that of women living in urban areas, as well as 0.02 higher WHR and WHtR and 0.8 higher BAI. In contrast, men living in rural areas had a 0.001 higher WHtR and WHR than men living in urban areas. In the multivariable models, after having considered potential confounding variables, women living in rural areas had approximately a 60% higher probability of being obese, while men had approximately a 30% higher probability of being obese.

Background: The availability of measures to operationalize allostatic load - the cumulative toll on the body of responding to stressor demands - in population health surveys may differ across years or surveys, hampering analyses on the entire sampled population. Here, impacts of variable selection and calculation method were evaluated to generate an allostatic load index applicable across all cycles of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS). Methods: Data from CHMS cycles 1 to 4 were used to compare allostatic load scores when replacing the most prevalent risk factor, waist-to-hip ratio - available in cycles 1 to 4 but not 5 and 6 - with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist circumference within BMI groups (classified as normal, overweight, or obese), or waist-to-height ratio. Indexes were generated using clinical or sex-specific empirically defined risk thresholds and as count-based or continuous scores. Logistic regression models that included age and sex were used to relate each potential index to socioeconomic indicators (educational attainment, household income). Results: Of the variables assessed, waist-to-height ratio and waist circumference were closest to waist-to-hip ratio according to an individual's percentile ranking and in classifying "at risk" using either clinical or empirically defined cut-offs. Allostatic load profiles generated using waist-to-height ratios most closely resembled profiles constructed using waist-to-hip ratios. Sex-dependent associations with educational attainment and household income were maintained across constructs whether indexes were count-based or continuous. Interpretation: Allostatic load profiles and associations with socioeconomic indicators were robust to variable substitution and method of calculation, supporting the use of a harmonized index across survey cycles to assess the cumulative toll on health of stressor exposure.

The aim of the study was to examine the direction of the secular changes in the waist and hips circumferences, as well as selected associated body proportions, among children and adolescents from Kraków, Poland. The study group included 8-18-year-olds examined in three cross-sectional studies (1983, 2010, and 2020). The analyzed characteristics included body height, circumferences of the waist and hips, which were used to calculate Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR), and Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR). There was a secular increase regarding the majority of the analyzed features, particularly for the younger children (i.e., prepubertal/early pubertal age). The trends were also especially evident when comparing the results of the 1983 series to the results of their peers examined in 2020. An opposite trend was noted in adolescent girls. The observed changes reflect the secular trend resulting from changes in body composition and fat distribution happening due to alterations in the lifestyle and socio-economic environment of the population over the years. It should also be stressed that the increase in the studied characteristics occurred mainly in younger children. This suggests that the observed changes may have resulted from a shift in the age of maturation and also from the personal and social motivators characteristic for late adolescence.

Introducción:existe una sospecha sobre la relación bidireccional entre la apnea obstructiva del sueño (AOS) y la hipertensión arterial (HTA). Ambas ejercen una acción sinérgica sobre desenlaces cardiovasculares porlo quees trascendente ponderar la prevalencia de riesgo para AOS en los hipertensos. En este último grupo también hemos investigado la tasa de adherencia a los fármacos prescritos. Metodología:mediante un estudio de casos y controles y con la aplicación del cuestionario STOP-BANG se han discriminado las categorías de riesgo para apnea de sueño en las dos cohortes. Para el análisis de la adherencia a fármacos antihipertensivos se utilizó el cuestionario abreviado de Morisky. Resultados:se incluyeron a 590 individuos (295 casos y 295 controles. Se observó alto riesgo para AOS en el grupo de hipertensos (36,6%) comparado con el 14,2% del grupo control. Por otro lado, el sexo masculino OR 7,77 (IC95% 4,33-13,84), la obesidad OR 5,03 (IC95% 3,11-8,13) y la HTA OR 4,31 (IC95% 2,64-7,03) se ponderan significativos en un modelo de ajuste logístico aquí estudiado. El 61,69% de los hipertensos refería adherencia al tratamiento farmacológico prescrito. Discusión:el tamizaje de AOS es factible con un cuestionario aplicable en la práctica clínica diaria. De la probabilidad clínica pre-test hay que partir hacia métodos diagnósticos específicos para el diagnóstico de AOS, enfatizando casos de HTA resistente, HTA nocturna y HTA enmascarada. Se deberían realizar estudios locales que nos ayuden a comprender las causas de la falta de adherencia a fármacos antihipertensivos en una fracción importante de los individuos con HTA


Introduction:there is a suspicion about the bidirectional relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and arterial hypertension (AHT). Both have a synergistic action on cardiovascular outcomes, so it is important to assess the prevalence of risk for OSA in hypertensive patients. In this last group we have also investigated the rate of adherence to prescribed drugs.Metodology:through a case-control study and with the application of the STOP-BANG questionnaire, the risk categories for sleep apnea in the two cohorts have been discriminated. For the analysis of adherence to antihypertensive drugs, the abbreviated Morisky questionnaire was used. Results:590 individuals were included (295 cases and 295 controls. A high risk for OSA was observed in the hypertensive group (36.6%) compared to 14.2% in the control group. On the other hand, the male sex OR 7.77 (95%CI 4.33-13.84), obesity OR 5.03 (95%CI 3.11-8.13) and hypertensionOR4.31(95%CI 2.64-7.03) they areweighted significant in a logistic adjustment model studied here.61.69% of hypertensive patients reported adherence to the prescribed pharmacological treatment.Discussion:OSA screening is feasible with a questionnaire applicable in daily clinical practice. From the pre-test clinical probability, specific diagnostic methods for the diagnosis of OSA must be started, emphasizing cases of resistant AHT, nocturnal AHT, andmasked AHT. Local studies should be carried out to help us understand the causes of non-adherence to antihypertensive drugs in a significant fraction of individuals with AHT

BACKGROUND: An alarming trend of sustained physical inactivity has been observed among women in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas, mainly due to the lack of time and high cost of gym facilities. Although physical activity essentially contributes to disease prevention, evidence supporting time-efficient exercise on anthropometric measures is limited. This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of interval-based high-intensity circuit training (HICT) on anthropometric measures and the nature of the relationship between these measures. METHODS: A single-group, quasi-experimental study was conducted in the community park of Ziauddin Hospital at Sikandarabad. Sixty women who were overweight and had sedentary lifestyles were recruited for a six-week HICT-based program conducted at 85%-95% maximum heart rate (MHR) on every alternate day. Outcome measures were assessed at baseline and at 6-weeks including anthropometric parameters (body mass index [BMI], body fat percentage [BF%], and waist-to-hip ratio [WHR]). RESULTS: The six-week HICT-based program demonstrated a significant reduction in BMI (p<0.001), BF% (p<0.001), and WHR (p<0.001). Reductions in the BMI mean from 27.3±1.3 to 25.1±1.4 and BF% mean from 31.9±2.3 to 27.6±2.4 were observed following 18 sessions of HICT. The effect of age on BF% and WHR was linearly significant (p<0.001) with increasing age (BF%) and WHR. CONCLUSION: Interval-based HICT was an effective exercise regimen for improving BMI, BF%, and WHR. Furthermore, the exercise protocol was feasible and well tolerated, with no reported adverse events, and it could be easily implemented in real-world community settings. BF% and WHR were significantly influenced by increasing age; therefore, our findings support the importance of exercise implementation, especially with increasing age, for the maintenance of a disease-free healthy lifestyle.

In the last few decades, North African countries have faced the nutrition transition, leading to an increase in obesity, exacerbated by an extremely low rate of physical activity (PA). Particular attention must be paid to abdominal obesity (one of the metabolic syndrome criteria), which has been linked to several health problems. The present study aims to investigate the prevalence of overweight/obesity, particularly abdominal obesity, in a sample of urban Moroccan women and to analyze the anthropometric indicators of metabolic syndrome risk among subsamples with different PA and socio-demographic characteristics. Urban Moroccan women living in Casablanca (n = 304; mean age 37.4 ± 15.6 years) were recruited for this cross-sectional study. Data concerning socio-demographic variables, PA behavior, and anthropometric measures (height, weight, waist, and hip circumferences) were directly collected. Body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, and relative fat mass were computed. Comparisons between women with different socio-demographic characteristics were performed through ANCOVA adjusted for age. The results reveal that 39.4% of the women did not practice any PA. The percentage of women above the cutoffs of risk for general and central obesity was more than half for all the indexes, except for waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and 19.6% were at a very high risk of health issues. Moreover, being female unmarried, childless, graduates, and students were found to be protective against obesity. In conclusion, Moroccan women have a high level of obesity, especially abdominal, and preventive interventions are needed to reduce the health impact of obesity in this population.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) brings high mortality and economic burden to patients, especially in rural areas. Simple, low-cost abdominal adiposity measures may help identify individuals with increased CVD risk. It is unclear that which obesity indices is the best to predict CVD in hypertensive people. METHODS: Northeast China Rural Cardiovascular Health Study (NCRCHS) is a prospective cohort study in a general population in Northeast China. The study examined the cardiovascular health from 2013 to 2015, and follow-up captured the CVD incidence in 2018. Baseline waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip (WHR)and body mass index (BMI) were calculated and analyzed in relation to the CVD incidence. RESULTS: A total of 4244 hypertensive adults without pre-existing CVD at baseline were included in this analysis (age 35-92 years; 2108 men). Over a median follow-up of 4.66 years, a total of 290 CVD cases (6.83%) were documented during the follow-up. Baseline WHtR showed a significant positive association with CVD incidence, even after adjusting for age, sex, diabetes, drinking, smoking, SBP, DBP, Triglyceride, HDL-C, LDL-C, and TC (Hazard Ratios per SD of WHtR ranging from 1.03 to 1.31, p = 0.017). Reclassification and discrimination analyses indicated WHtR addition could improve the conventional model for predicting adverse outcomes within 4 years. Moreover, WHtR predicted the CVD incidence better than other obesity indices (BMI, WC, WHR). CONCLUSION: These findings support a positive association between WHtR and CVD incidence in CVD-free hypertensive adults. WHtR can be used to predict CVD incidence in hypertensive adults.

The aim of this paper was to evaluate the socioeconomic differences in adult anthropometric parameters of young women in Poland. The study was cross-sectional and conducted in the years 2015 to 2018 among 1257 women aged 19-24 years. The heights, weights, wrist widths and waist, hip and chest circumferences of the subjects were measured. Body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist-to-chest ratio (WCR) and chest-to-height ratio (CHtR) were calculated. A survey was conducted to collect data on the women's socioeconomic characteristics. The application of the Generalized Linear Model (GLM) including all socioeconomic indicators (urbanization level of place of residence in childhood, parental education, number of siblings, material conditions) revealed no significant association of these with any of the analysed anthropometric traits. The results of the logistic regression showed no significant differences in the risk of underweight, too low abdominal adiposity or too high abdominal adiposity. However, the risk of overweight and obesity was significantly affected by the degree of urbanization of the women's place of residence in childhood and by their number of siblings. The results show that the socioeconomic factors that once had a significant influence on anthropometric traits currently do not play such an important role. This change can be explained by the equalization of living conditions and lifestyles of individual social groups in Poland.

The assessment of anthropometric variables has been shown to be useful as a predictor of cardiovascular risk in overweight and obese patients. The aim of this study was to determine the usefulness of the relationship between breast volume and body mass index as an indicator of cardiovascular risk in premenopausal women with overweight and mild obesity. A prospective observational study of 93 premenopausal women was performed. Evaluation of anthropometric measures included age, body mass index, waist and hip circumferences, breast projection, and ptosis. Cardiovascular risk factors were evaluated using the Framingham cardiovascular risk score, the triglycerides/HDL cholesterol ratio and the waist-hip ratio. Ninety-three women were included, with a mean 36.4 ± 7.5 years. Mean BMI was 27.3 ± 1.9 kg/m2, waist-to-Hip ratio was 0.8 ± 0.07, and mammary volume was 1045 ± 657.4 cm3. Mean body fat mass was 30.6 + 3.6% and mean visceral fat was 6.6 + 3.2%. The mean triglycerides to HDL ratio was 1.7 ± 0.8 and waist-to-hip ratio was 0.8 ± 0.07. Breast volume related to body mass index can be used as a predictor of cardiovascular risk in premenopausal women who are overweight and mildly obese.

BACKGROUND: The buttock is an essential feature of the female silhouette. This has led to the rise of the Brazilian butt lift as one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in recent years. Despite this popularity, there remains no prevailing standard for the ideal buttock size and shape. In fact, a wide range of preferred sizes and shapes among the authors' patients has been observed. The authors hypothesized that age, religious affinity, and ethnic differences may demonstrate different buttock size and shape preferences. METHODS: The authors designed the buttock assessment tool, which utilizes digitally altered buttock sizes and shapes to determine desired buttock shape (upper, middle, and lower pole maximum fullness) and buttock size (waist-to-hip width ratio) for both the posteroanterior and lateral views. A survey of 422 patients was completed, evaluating variation of desired buttock size and shape based on patient age, cultural, and ethnic differences. RESULTS: There were significant differences in buttock size and buttock shape based on age, ethnicity, and religion. Hispanics and African Americans were twice as likely as Caucasians to request lower pole fullness in the posteroanterior view. Older respondents preferred a smaller buttock in both views. African Americans preferred a larger buttock compared to Caucasians in both views. Hispanics preferred a larger buttock in only the lateral view. Muslim respondents preferred a smaller buttock in the posteroanterior view. CONCLUSION: The Brazilian buttock assessment tool has become critical to understanding and delivering prospective Brazilian butt lift patients' goals by objectifying buttock size and shapes.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the associations among obesity-related indices and MetS in diabetic patients, and explore sex differences in these associations. Methods: Patients with type 2 DM were included from two hospitals in southern Taiwan. The Adult Treatment Panel III criteria for an Asian population were used to define MetS. In addition, the following obesity-related indices were evaluated: waist-to-height ratio, waist-hip ratio (WHR), conicity index (CI), body mass index (BMI), body roundness index, body adiposity index, lipid accumulation product (LAP), abdominal volume index, visceral adiposity index (VAI), abdominal volume index and triglyceride-glucose index. Results: A total of 1,872 patients with type 2 DM (mean age 64.0 ± 11.3 years, 808 males and 1,064 females) were enrolled. The prevalence rates of MetS were 59.8% and 76.4% in the males and female (p < 0.001), respectively. All of the obesity-related indices were associated with MetS in both sex (all p < 0.001). LAP and BMI had the greatest areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves in both sex. In addition, the interactions between BMI and sex (p = 0.036), WHR and sex (p = 0.016), and CI and sex (p = 0.026) on MetS were statistically significant. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study demonstrated significant relationships between obesity-related indices and MetS among patients with type 2 DM. LAP and VAI were powerful predictors in both sex. The associations of BMI, WHR and CI on MetS were more significant in the men than in the women.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to assess the status of physical body indices such as body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) among the older adults aged 45 and above in India. Further, to explore the association of anthropometric indices with various non-communicable morbidities. METHODS: The study uses secondary data of the Longitudinal Ageing Survey's first wave in India (2017-18). The national representative sample for older adults 45 and above (65,662) considered for the analysis. The prevalence of the non-communicable diseases (NCDs) included in the study is based on the self-reporting of the participants. Diseases included are among the top ten causes of death, such as cancer, hypertension, stroke, chronic heart diseases, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, and multi-morbidity. Multi-morbidity is a case of having more than one of the morbidities mentioned above. BMI-obese indicates an individual having a BMI ≥30, and the critical threshold value for high-risk WC for men is ≥102 cm while for women is ≥88 cm. The critical limit for the high-risk WHR for men and women is ≥0.90 and ≥ 0.85, respectively. Descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regressions are used to assess the association BMI, WC, and WHR with non-communicable morbidities. RESULTS: Based on the multivariate-adjusted model, odds shows that an Indian older adult aged 45 and above is 2.3 times more likely (AOR: 2.33; 95% CI (2.2, 2.5)) by obesity, 61% more likely (AOR: 1.61; 95% CI (1.629, 1.631)) by high-risk WHR and 98% more likely (AOR: 1.98; 95% CI (1.9, 2.1)) by high-risk WC to develop CVDs than their normal counterparts. Similarly, significant positive associations of obesity, high-risk WC, and high-risk WHR were observed with other NCDs and multi-morbidity. CONCLUSION: Our study shows that obesity, high-risk WC, and high-risk WHR are significant risks for developing NCDs and multi-morbidity among the older adults in India. There is a need for a multi-sectoral approach to reduce the share of the elderly population in high-risk groups of BMIs, WHR, and WC.

Objective: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) continues to be a leading cause of death for U.S. adults, especially African Americans (AA). Yet, few studies have examined a comprehensive set of metabolic health and health behavior factors related to CVD risk in this population. This study investigated the relationship between serum leptin and anthropometries (body mass index [BMI], circumferences [waist-WC, hip-HC, and waist/hip ratio W/H]), metabolic health (systolic and diastolic blood pressure [BP], serum lipids, glucose, and C-reactive protein [CRP]), and health behaviors (hours of sleep, physical activity) in midlife and older AAs. Materials and Methods: Participants (n = 89, ≥45 years of age) were AAs in six churches in North Florida enrolled in a broader church-based longitudinal study. Anthropometric measurements, serum analyses, and self-reported items. Results: Serum leptin was positively correlated with gender (being female) (r = 0.623, p < 0.001), BMI log transformed (r = 0.469, p < 0.001), WC (r = 0.440, p < 0.001), HC (r = 0.658, p < 0.001), use of BP medication (r = 0.216, p < 0.05), and serum CRP (r = 0.277, p < 0.01). Correlations by sex showed significant relationships for both men and women between leptin and BMI log transformed, WC, and HC. The final multiple regression model [R2 = 0.758, F(4, 66) = 55.871, p < 0.001] showed that 75.8% of the variance in leptin was explained by being female (ß = 0.65, p < 0.001), WC (ß = 0.26, p < 0.02), and HC (ß = 0.28, p < 0.01). Conclusions: Findings more specifically delineate the variables associated with serum leptin in AAs, particularly WC and HC, and suggest greater attention to possible risk for leptin resistance in AA females. BACKGROUND: A new simplified method for the detention of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is proposed using two variables (anthropometric and minimally invasive). METHODS: A study of MetS prevalence was made on a sample of 361 older people. The anthropometric variables analyzed were: blood pressure, body mass index, waist circumference (WC), waist-height ratio, body fat percentage, and waist-hip ratio. A crude and adjusted binary logistic regression was performed, and receiver operating characteristic curves were obtained for determining the predictive capacity of those variables. For the new detection method, decision trees were employed using automatic detection by interaction through Chi-square. RESULTS: The prevalence of the MetS was of 43.7%. The final decision trees uses WC and basal glucose (BG), whose cutoff values were: for men, WC ≥ 102.5 cm and BG > 98 mg/dL (sensitivity = 67.1%, specificity = 90.3%, positive predictive value = 85%, validity index = 79.9%); and for women, WC ≥ 92.5 cm and BG ≥ 97 mg/dL (sensitivity = 65.9%, specificity = 92.7%, positive predictive value = 87.1%, validity index = 81.3%). In older women the best predictive value of MetS was a WC of 92.5 cm. CONCLUSIONS: It is possible to make a simplified diagnosis of MetS in older people using the WC and basal capillary glucose, with a high diagnostic accuracy and whose use could be recommended in the resource-poor health areas. A new cutting point in older women for the WC should be valued.

Epidemiological studies suggest a positive association between obesity and fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by microbial fermentation of dietary carbohydrates, while animal models suggest increased energy harvest through colonic SCFA production in obesity. However, there is a lack of human population-based studies with dietary intake data, plasma SCFAs, gut microbial, and anthropometric data. In 490 Chinese adults aged 30-68 years, we examined the associations between key plasma SCFAs (butyrate/isobutyrate, isovalerate, and valerate measured by non-targeted plasma metabolomics) with body mass index (BMI) using multivariable-adjusted linear regression. We then assessed whether overweight (BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2) modified the association between dietary-precursors of SCFAs (insoluble fiber, total carbohydrates, and high-fiber foods) with plasma SCFAs. In a sub-sample (n = 209) with gut metagenome data, we examined the association between gut microbial SCFA-producers with BMI. We found positive associations between butyrate/isobutyrate and BMI (p-value < 0.05). The associations between insoluble fiber and butyrate/isobutyrate differed by overweight (p-value < 0.10). There was no statistical evidence for an association between microbial SCFA-producers and BMI. In sum, plasma SCFAs were positively associated with BMI and that the colonic fermentation of fiber may differ for adults with versus without overweight.

AIMS: Previous evidence has demonstrated an increased fracture risk among the population with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study investigated the prevalence of bone fractures in elderly subjects (with and without type 2 diabetes) and identified any fracture risk factors, especially the risk factors for common known fractures in particular diabetic populations. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted with community-dwelling people over 60 years old in nine communities from the city of Shenyang, which is the capital of Northeast China's Liaoning Province. A total of 3430 elderly adults (2201 females, mean ± standard deviation age 68.16 ± 6.1 years; 1229 males, 69.16 ± 6.7 years) were included. Our study measured the heel bone mineral density (BMD) and used the timed "up and go" (TUG) test and other indicators. In addition, we performed logistic regression analysis to explore the risk factors for fractures in the general population and the diabetic population and to analyze the differences. RESULTS: The results revealed that a total of 201 elderly persons (5.8%), with an average age of 70.05 ± 6.54 years, suffered from a history of fragility fractures, which affected more females (74.6%) than males (p = 0.001). The prevalence of fractures in the T2DM population was 7.3%, which was much higher than the 5.2% in non-T2DM population (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study found that low BMD and slow TUG time were independent risk factors for fractures in non-T2DM patients, while no associations were found in the T2DM population. Patients with T2DM have a higher risk for fractures even when they have sufficient BMD and a short TUG time. TUG and BMD underestimated the risk for fractures in the T2DM population.

OBJECTIVE: Menopausal changes are linked to increase in body fat mass and central fat distribution; nonetheless, the impact of socioeconomic position on such changes has rarely been examined. This cohort study assessed the temporal associations of socioeconomic position with changes in body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) among early postmenopausal women. METHODS: Between 2002 and 2004, 518 Hong Kong Chinese women aged 50 to 64 and within 10 years since menopause were recruited and followed up at 3 and 5 years. Weight, height, and waist and hip circumferences were measured by trained interviewers at baseline and follow-up interviews. Socioeconomic positions including educational attainment, economic activity status and household income level, and other baseline demographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviors, and mental health status were collected based on a structured questionnaire. In total, 287 and 267 women with no general and abdominal obesity, respectively, at baseline were included in multiple regression analyses. RESULTS: Mean intrapersonal increases in BMI and WHR between baseline and 5-year interview were 0.46 kg/m and 2.80%, respectively. Women with no secondary education were 75% more likely to have a greater than-mean WHR increase than their more educated counterparts (P = 0.039). Also, having no secondary education (P = 0.041) and being a homemaker (P = 0.034) had accelerated surge in WHR. Nonetheless, baseline socioeconomic positions were not significantly associated with BMI changes. CONCLUSIONS: Socioeconomic patterning was observed for the progression of WHR among nonobese Chinese women soon after menopause. Early postmenopausal stage may be a critical window for prevention of abdominal obesity among women with a lower educational attainment.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: This prospective association study aimed to compare the relationship between each of four obesity indices and mortality risk in people with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: The associations of BMI, waist circumference, WHR and A Body Shape Index (ABSI) with all-cause mortality were analysed in 1282 participants of the Fremantle Diabetes Study, followed for up to 20 years after baseline assessment. Models were adjusted for age and other confounders; assessments as continuous measures and by quintile were carried out for men and women separately. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to minimise reverse causality. RESULTS: When indices were assessed as continuous variables, there were significant bivariate associations with mortality for: ABSI, which was greater in both men and women who died (p < 0.001); WHR, which was greater in women only (p = 0.033); and BMI, which was lower in women only (p < 0.001). When assessed by quintile, there were significant bivariate associations with mortality for ABSI in men and women (p < 0.001) and BMI in women only (p = 0.002). In Cox models of time to death, adjusted for age, diabetes duration, ethnicity and smoking, ABSI quintiles showed a linear trend for both men (p = 0.003) and women (p = 0.035). Men in the fifth ABSI quintile had an increased mortality risk compared with those in the first quintile (HR [95% CI]: 1.74 [1.24, 2.44]) and women in the fifth ABSI quintile had an increased mortality risk that approached statistical significance (1.42 [0.97, 2.08], p = 0.08). Men in the fifth WHR quintile had an increased mortality risk (1.47 [1.05, 2.06]). There was no association between mortality and BMI or waist circumference in either sex. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: ABSI was the obesity index most strongly associated with all-cause mortality in Australians with type 2 diabetes. There was no evidence for an obesity paradox with any of the assessed indices. ABSI may be a better index of central obesity than waist circumference, BMI or WHR when assessing mortality risk in type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: To study the association between anthropometric measurements and the risk of diabetes and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and compare body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) to determine the best indicator and its optimal cutoffs for predicting type 2 diabetes and IFG. METHODS: A Chinese prospective (2011-2019) cohort named the Jingchang cohort that included 48 001 participants was studied. Using Cox proportional hazard models, hazard ratios (HRs) for incident type 2 diabetes or IFG per 1 SD change in BMI, WC, and WHtR were calculated. Area under the curve (AUC) was compared to identify the best anthropometric variable and its optimal cutoff for predicting diabetes. RESULTS: The association of BMI, WC, and WHtR with type 2 diabetes or IFG risk was positive in the univariate and multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazard models. Of all three indexes, the AUC of BMI was largest and that of WC was smallest. The derived cutoff values for BMI, WC, and WHtR were 24.6 kg/m2 , 89.5 cm, and 0.52 in men and 23.4 kg/m2 , 76.5 cm, and 0.47 in women for predicting diabetes, respectively. The derived cutoff values for BMI, WC, and WHtR were 23.4 kg/m2 , 87.5 cm, and 0.50 in men and 22.5 kg/m2 , 76.5 cm, and 0.47 in women for predicting IFG, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our derived cutoff points were lower than the values specified in the most current Asian diabetes guidelines. We recommend a cutoff point for BMI in Asians of 23 kg/m2 and for WC a cutoff point of 89 cm in men and 77 cm in women to define high-risk groups for type 2 diabetes; screening should be considered for these populations.
