RESUMO

Interventional cardiology is characterized by high radiation exposure for both the patient and the operator. Adequate shielding and monitoring of the operator are fundamental to comply with radiation protection principles. In a previous work, the effect on the dose of the dosemeter position on the chest was studied. In this paper, the investigation has been completed, employing an anthropomorphic thorax phantom, equipped with arms. Although there are differences between the Monte Carlo simulations and the measurements, similar trends are observed, showing that the reduction in dose, due to the arms, is between 20 and 60%, compared with the situation without arms. For that reason, considering a dosemeter placed on the chest, the upper position, which is the least affected by the arms, should be preferred while the extreme lateral position, near the armpit, should be avoided.

BACKGROUND: Schools with formal sun safety polices generally show better sun safety practices than schools without. OBJECTIVES: To understand the extent to which Welsh primary schools have sun safety policies; to identify the key characteristics of policies; to assess whether policy adoption varies by school characteristics; and to consider what support schools need to develop sun safety policies. METHODS: An online multiple-choice survey on sun safety was distributed to all 1241 primary schools in Wales. RESULTS: In total, 471 (38.0%) schools responded. Of these, 183 (39.0%) reported having a formal sun safety policy. Welsh medium schools (P = 0.036) and schools in North Wales (P = 0.008) were more likely to report having a policy. Schools with a higher percentage of pupils receiving free school meals (P = 0.046) and with lower attendance rates (P = 0.008) were less likely to report having a sun safety policy. The primary reasons for schools not having a policy included being 'not aware of the need' (34.6%); 'need assistance with policy or procedure development' (30.3%); and 'not got around to it just yet' (26.8%). CONCLUSIONS: With less than half of schools reporting a sun safety policy and variation in the presence/absence of a policy by school characteristics, our survey revealed inconsistency in formal sun safety provision in Welsh schools. The findings also suggest that schools are unaware of the importance of sun safety and need support to develop and implement policies. This snapshot of the current situation in primary schools in Wales provides a basis upon which the comprehensiveness, effectiveness and implementation of sun safety policies can be further evaluated.

Lead protective garments worn by medical staff in the presence of x-rays develop defects over time. This work proposes a novel method of assessing the protective efficacy of the garments as defects develop. The proposed method applies updated radiobiology data from ICRP 103. This work applied the as low as reasonably achievable principle to devise a formula through which a maximum allowed defect area in lead protective garments can be calculated. This formula depends on the cross-sectional areas (A) and ICRP 103 tissue weighting factors (wt) of the most radiosensitive and overlapping organs protected by the garment, the maximum allowed additional effective dose to the garment wearer due to the defects (d), and the unattenuated absorbed dose at the surface of the garment (D). The maximum allowed defect areas are separated into three regions:above the waist, below the waist, andthyroid. To be conservative, it was assumed thatD= 50 mGy yr-1, andd= 0.3 mSv yr-1. Also conservatively, transmission was assumed to be 0%, as employing a non-zero transmission factor would increase the maximum allowed defect area. Maximum allowed defect areas were as follows: 370 mm2for above the waist, 37 mm2for below the waist, and 279 mm2for the thyroid. These values can be compared to commonly published values which are 670 mm2for an apron, 15 mm2over the gonads, and 11-20 mm2for the thyroid. The proposed method for lead protective garment assessment is highly adaptable as values can be adjusted as radiobiology data are updated, and as values such as radiation dose limits vary across jurisdictions. Future works will include collection of data for unattenuated dose to apron (D) as it varies across professions, so that garments may be allowed different defect areas if relegated to individuals of specific professions.

INTRODUCTION: Permethrin is a common pesticide spray-applied to civilian clothing and military uniforms for protection against biting arthropods in an effort to reduce risks to arthropod-borne diseases. During mass clothing spray events, exposure is possible through the dermal, inhalation, and ingestion routes. The potentially exposed population during a spray event includes the pesticide applicator(s) and working party (personnel who handle clothing/uniforms by positioning on the ground, flipping, and removing after spraying is complete). Previous investigation is limited regarding permethrin exposure via multiple routes of entry. Additionally, most exposure assessments are limited to pesticide applicators rather than working party that support applicator personnel. The purpose of this investigation was to conduct a multi-route exposure assessment for all personnel normally participating in mass permethrin military uniform treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The protocol and Informed Consent Document were approved by the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) Institutional Review Board (IRB) before fieldwork initiation (IRB number: USUHS.2019-032). Sampling occurred during routine spray events performed by 14 U.S. Navy personnel (3 applicators and 11 working party) over 2 days. Personal exposures were measured with dermal sampling, and airborne concentrations were measured with area air sampling. Permethrin area air sampling and analysis were conducted using OSHA Versatile Sampler-2 sampling media (n = 36). Dermal exposure was measured using dosimeter gloves (n = 26) and a dermal patch (n = 26) worn by study participants. RESULTS: All air samples were reported below the 0.4 µg limit of quantification. Glove sample results ranged from 45 to 120,000 µg and patch results ranged from 0.57 to 45 µg. A repeated-measures ANOVA showed non-statistically significant differences in dermal concentrations (P-value = .8340) between the applicators and working party in patches and gloves. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest dermal contact is the primary route of exposure compared to inhalation when mass spraying clothing with permethrin. Similar dermal exposures between these two occupations may necessitate reconsidering risk assessment procedures, training and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements for mass spray uniform treatments. Specifically, while PPE requirements for applicators are highly regulated by the Armed Forces Pest Management Board and include items such as Tyvek suits, chemical protective gloves, and air-purifying respirators, PPE was not regulated for working party personnel before this investigation.

Em março de 2020 a situação causada pela covid-19 foi elevada à categoria de pandemia, impactando de inúmeras formas a vida em sociedade. O objetivo deste estudo foi compreender os impactos da pandemia na atuação e saúde mental do psicólogo hospitalar, profissional que atua nos espaços de saúde e tem experienciado mais de perto o sofrimento dos doentes e dos profissionais de saúde frente à covid-19. Trata-se de um estudo exploratório-descritivo com 131 psicólogos que atuam em hospitais. Os profissionais foram convidados a participar através de redes sociais e redes de contatos das pesquisadoras, utilizando-se a técnica Bola de Neve. Foram utilizados dois questionários, disponibilizados na plataforma Google Forms, um abordando os impactos da pandemia sentidos pelos profissionais e outro referente ao sofrimento psíquico. Os dados foram analisados a partir de estatísticas descritivas e inferenciais. Foram observados impactos na atuação de quase a totalidade dos participantes, constatada a necessidade de preparação dos profissionais para o novo cenário, a percepção de pouco apoio institucional e quase metade da população estudada referiu-se a sintomas de sofrimento psíquico considerável desde o início da pandemia. É fundamental dar atenção a sinais e sintomas de sofrimento psíquico, procurando evitar o adoecimento de uma categoria profissional que se encontra na linha de frente do combate aos danos psicológicos da pandemia e cuja própria saúde mental é pouco abordada na literatura.(AU)


In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic breakout hugely impacted life in society. This study analyzes how the pandemic impacted hospital psychologists' mental health and performance, professional who more closely experienced the suffering of patients and health professionals in this period. An exploratory and descriptive study was conducted with 131 hospital psychologists. Professionals were invited to participate through the researchers' social and contact networks using the Snowball technique. Data were collected by two questionnaires available on the Google Forms platform, one addressing the impacts felt by professionals and the other regarding psychic suffering, and analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. Results showed that almost all participants had their performance affected by the need to prepare for the new scenario, the perceived little institutional support. Almost half of the study sample reported considerable psychological distress symptoms since the beginning of the pandemic. Paying attention to signs and symptoms of psychic suffering is fundamental to avoid compromising a professional category that is on the front line of combating the psychological damage caused by the pandemic and whose own mental health is little addressed by the literature.(AU)


En marzo de 2020, la situación provocada por el COVID-19 se caracterizó como pandemia e impactó el mundo de diversas maneras. El objetivo de este estudio fue comprender los impactos de la pandemia en la salud mental y la actuación del psicólogo en los hospitales, uno de los profesionales que trabaja en espacios sanitarios y que ha experimentado más de cerca el sufrimiento de pacientes y profesionales sanitarios frente al COVID-19. Este es un estudio exploratorio descriptivo, realizado con 131 psicólogos que trabajan en hospitales. Los profesionales recibieron la invitación a participar a través de las redes sociales y redes de contactos de las investigadoras, mediante la técnica snowball. Se utilizaron dos cuestionarios disponibles en la plataforma Google Forms: uno sobre los impactos de la pandemia en los profesionales y el otro sobre el sufrimiento psíquico. Los datos se analizaron a partir de estadísticas descriptivas e inferenciales. Se observaron impactos en el trabajo de casi todos los participantes, la necesidad de preparación de los profesionales para este nuevo escenario, la percepción de poco apoyo institucional, y casi la mitad de la población estudiada reportaron sentir síntomas de considerable angustia psicológica desde el inicio de la pandemia. Es esencial prestar atención a los signos y síntomas del sufrimiento psíquico, buscando evitar la enfermedad de una categoría profesional que está a la vanguardia de la lucha contra el daño psicológico de la pandemia y cuya propia salud mental se aborda poco en la literatura.(AU)

The aim of this study is to evaluate the personal dose equivalent Hp(10) in the most frequent (non-cardiac) paediatric interventional radiology (PIR) procedures: central venous catheters (CVC), hepatic/biliary and sclerotherapy interventions. i2 active solid-state dosemeters placed over the lead apron were used to monitor the exposure of three interventional radiologists over 18 months. A database was created to register all procedures performed by each radiologist (including the type of procedure and the kerma-area product, PKA). The mean Hp(10) per procedure for CVC, sclerotherapy and hepatic/biliary interventions was respectively 0.01 ± 0.01 mSv, 0.18 ± 0.13 mSv and 0.12 ± 0.06 mSv (k = 2). A similar value of Hp(10)/PKA was found despite the type of procedure or the patient weight (~10 µSv/Gy·cm2). There was high variability among individual interventions, probably due to the variable level of complexity, which led to uncertainties in the measurements' mean higher than those associated with the dosemeter's angular and energy dependence. i2 therefore proved suitable for monitoring Hp(10) in PIR procedures.

In 1978, the FDA Advisory Panel proposed both indoor and natural sunlight SPF testing methods but reverted to indoor testing only in 1993. Today's sunscreen sun protection and broad-spectrum claims are based on mandated clinical tests using solar simulators and in vitro spectrophotometers. This research evaluated the protection of 10 high-SPF (30-110), broad-spectrum sunscreen products, as well as 6 sun-protective fabrics against natural sunlight in Arequipa, Peru. Each of the 17 subjects was exposed to natural sunlight for 1 h and 59 min under clear skies, with temperatures and humidity similar to those in an indoor clinical laboratory. Test sites were photographed 16-24 h later. Four dermatologists evaluated the photographs for erythema and persistent pigment darkening (PPD). Perceptible sun-induced skin injury (sunburn and/or pigmentation) was detected at 97% of the sunscreen-protected scores. The most sun-sensitive subjects obtained the least erythema protection. The higher the SPF was, the higher the erythema protection, but the intensity of PPD was also higher. The 2 sunscreens using only FDA-approved sunscreen filters rated 30 SPF and 45+ SPF performed poorly: Eighty-one percent of the 136 scores were graded 1 minimal erythema dose or higher erythema, achieving, at a maximum, SPF of 5-7 in natural sunlight. Sun-protective fabrics tested provided excellent sun protection. The erythema and PPD observed through the sunscreens in less than 2 h are incongruous with the broad-spectrum, high-SPF sunscreen claims. Reapplying these sunscreens and staying in the sun longer, as stated on the product labels, would have subjected the subjects to even more UV exposure. High-SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen claims based on indoor solar simulator testing do not agree with the natural sunlight protection test results.

Cross-country eventing is one of the highest-risk sporting activities for serious injury outcomes. This study investigated relationships between fall characteristics and high-risk falls at jumps in cross-country eventing. A video analysis protocol was systematically developed to analyze 87 video recordings of high-risk rider falls; defined as when the rider's head impacted the ground and/or where there was potential horse impact with the rider. Falls were classified according to competition type, jump type, horse-related, and rider-related factors. At least one high-risk fall characteristic was observed in 45 of 87 examined falls. Multivariable best subsets regression identified five independent variables explaining 38.4% of the variance in the number of high-risk falls. Increased likelihood of high-risk falls was associated with continuation of horse direction or speed upon rider ground impact, higher jump approach speed, changes in rider body posture upon landing, rider air jacket usage, and reduced rider fall time. The Eventing Fall Assessment Instrument (EFAI) video analysis protocol (attached as supplementary material) facilitated systematic examination of multiple characteristics associated with high-risk falls and identified likely influential characteristics. Based on EFAI and subsequent data analyses, findings suggest optimized approach speed for correct striding and take-off; jump design to enable run-out; and rider training could help reduce the occurrence of high-risk falls. Air jacket usage and their design characteristics warrant further investigation.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed dermal exposure to N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAC) in a spray worker by utilizing a combination of personal exposure monitoring, biological monitoring, and glove permeation monitoring. We also determined the protective effects of chemical protective gloves (CPGs). METHODS: Surveys with and without CPG usage were performed on different days. In the survey with CPG usage, the worker had worn leather gloves over the CPG. Personal exposure monitoring and glove permeation monitoring were performed using 3M Organic Vapor Monitor 3500 and PERMEA-TEC Pads respectively. Urinary concentration of DMAC and its metabolites (N-methylacetamide [NMAC], N-hydroxymethyl-N-methylacetamide [DMAC-OH], S-(acetamidomethyl) mercapturic acid [AMMA]) were measured in the before-shift and end-of-shift samples collected from the worker. RESULTS: Personal exposure DMAC concentration in the survey with CPG usage (0.32 ppm) was twice that in the survey without CPG usage (0.15 ppm). However, urinary concentrations of DMAC-OH and AMMA in the end-of-shift samples in the survey with CPG usage (DMAC-OH, 0.74 mg/g creatinine; AMMA, 0.10 mg/g creatinine) were lower than those in the survey without CPG usage (DMAC-OH, 1.27 mg/g creatinine; AMMA, 0.24 mg/g creatinine). Urinary concentrations of DMAC and NMAC were below the limit of detection in all samples. DMAC concentrations in PERMEA-TEC Pads that were used in the surveys with and without CPG usage were in the range of 0.3-2.1 µg/sample and 16.4-1985.2 µg/sample respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of CPG usage and leather gloves was effective in preventing dermal exposure to DMAC.

The convective and radiative heat transfer coefficients of clothing are important parameters for human thermoregulation and comfort models. Many researchers have studied convective and radiative heat transfer coefficients of the naked human body. However, there is limited information on convective and radiative heat transfer coefficients for the clothed human body. Therefore, this study aims to confirm whether the convective and radiative heat transfer coefficients vary with different clothing ensembles in addition to clarifying how the difference in clothing heat transfer coefficients affects the prediction of thermal comfort index, such as the predicted mean vote (PMV) index. The convective and radiative heat transfer coefficients for eight sets of clothing ensembles were measured through a manikin experiment. The results demonstrated that (1) the largest difference between convective heat transfer coefficients for various clothing ensembles was 32%, and (2) PMV values differed between the clothing ensembles with the largest value being approximately 0.2, which corresponds nearly 1 °C change in the indoor temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the actual clothing convective heat transfer coefficient for the precise prediction of thermal comfort.

Shielded garments are widely recommended for occupational radiation protection in diagnostic and interventional radiology. This study investigated a novel method for efficiently verifying shielded garment integrity while simultaneously acquiring data for lead-equivalence measurements, using two-dimensional topogram images from computed tomography (CT) scanners. This method was tested against more-conventional measurements with superficial and orthovoltage radiotherapy treatment beams, for 12 shielded garments containing 3 different lead-free shielding materials. Despite some energy-dependent results, all shielded garments approximately achieved their specified lead-equivalence for the energy range expected during clinical use for fluoroscopy procedures, except for three shielded skirts that required two layers of material to be overlapped at the front. All lead-equivalence measurements from CT topograms agreed with or conservatively underestimated the kV narrow-beam results. This method is potentially useful for independently assessing the shielding properties of new shielded garments and performing annual checks for damage or degradation of existing shielded garments.

PURPOSE: Certification of the X-ray shielding garment is based on attenuation testing on flat material samples. We investigated the difference of shielding effectiveness compared to realistic use when the garment is worn on the body of a staff person. METHODS: Attenuation factors of X-ray protective aprons have been evaluated for several clinical scenarios with Monte Carlo (MC) calculations based on the ICRP female reference model and an experimental setup. The MC calculated attenuation factors refer to the effective dose E, whereas the measured attenuation factors refer to the personal dose equivalent Hp(10). The calculated/measured factors were compared to the attenuation factors of the identical materials measured under the conditions of the standard IEC 61331-1 that is currently in use for the type testing of X-ray protective aprons. RESULTS: As a result, for example, at a common tube voltage of 80 kV, the real attenuation factors of a 0.35 mm Pb apron worn by a 3-dimensional body were 38% to 76% higher than when measured under IEC conditions on flat samples. The MC-calculated organ doses show the maximum contribution to E being within the operators abdomen/pelvis region. CONCLUSIONS: With our findings, personal X-ray protective garments could be improved in effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Isolation precautions are recommended when caring for patients identified with highly resistant micro-organisms (HRMOs). However, the direct costs of patients in isolation are largely unknown. AIM: To obtain detailed information on the daily direct costs associated with isolating patients identified with HRMOs. METHODS: This study was performed from November until December 2017 on a 12-bed surgical ward. This ward contained solely isolation rooms with anterooms. The daily direct costs of isolation were based on three cost items: (1) additional personal protective equipment (PPE), measured by counting the consumption of empty packaging materials; (2) cleaning and disinfection of the isolation room, based on the costs of an outsourced cleaning company; and (3) additional workload for healthcare workers, based on literature and multiplied by the average gross hourly salary of nurses. A distinction was made between the costs for strict isolation, contact-plus isolation, and contact isolation. FINDINGS: During the study period, 26 patients were nursed in isolation because of HRMO carriage. Time for donning and doffing of PPE was 31 min per day. The average daily direct costs of isolation were the least expensive for contact isolation (gown, gloves), €28/$31, and the most expensive for strict isolation (surgical mask, gloves, gown, cap), €41/$47. CONCLUSION: Using a novel, easy method to estimate consumption of PPE, we conclude that the daily direct costs of isolating a patient differ per type of isolation. Insight into the direct costs of isolation is of utmost importance when developing or updating infection prevention policies.

Textile structures are considered as the main component of protective clothing against the penetration of sharp objects. In the current research work, woven fabrics reinforced with metal threads as weft yarn were designed with various weave patterns including Twill, Satin, and Hopsack, and by using a weft-backed weaving structure. The mentioned reinforced samples were produced by altering the diameter and number of metal threads in each fabric structure. Assessment of fabric resistance against bending and sharp object penetration reveals that although the application of metal thread improves the fabric resistance against sharp object penetration, it leads to an increase in the fabric stiffness. According to the results, the influence of the number of metal threads on the penetration resistance was considerably higher than the metal thread diameter. However, more increase in the fabric's bending stiffness was observed with the rise of metal thread's diameter compared to the number of metal threads. According to the obtained outcomes, weave structure is an effective parameter that changes fabric's resistance against penetration. In this regard, weave patterns with more firmness that limit the yarn movement during the indentation of the sharp object present higher protection ability. Furthermore, the increment of fabric density enhances the resistance against penetration. In this study, the resistance of two-layer samples with various orientations angle of 0°/90° and -45°/+45° were probed, as well. Outcomes confirmed that two-layer samples resist better than single-layer sample against sharp object penetration due to the formation of a grid of metal threads. Among two studied fabrics' orientation angles, the sample with the angle of -45°/+45° presents greater penetration resistance.

Objective: to analyze evidence concerning the feasibility of antimicrobial-impregnated fabrics in preventing and controlling microbial transmission in health services. Method: an integrative review using the following databases: MEDLINE (via PubMed), Web of Science, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Scopus, and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), regardless of language and date of publication. Seven studies were included in the analysis to verify the types of fabrics and substances used to impregnate the fabrics, applicability in health services, and decrease in microbial load. Results: silver nanoparticles and copper oxide are the main antimicrobial substances used to impregnate the fabrics. The patients' use of these fabrics, such as in bed and bath linens and clothing, was more effective in reducing antimicrobial load than in health workers' uniforms. Conclusion: the use of these antimicrobial-impregnated textiles, especially by patients, is a viable alternative to prevent and control microbial transmission in health services. Implementing these fabrics in health workers' uniforms requires further studies, however, to verify its effectiveness in decreasing microbial load in clinical practice.


Objetivo: analisar as evidências existentes sobre a viabilidade de utilizar têxteis impregnados com substâncias antimicrobianas na prevenção e no controle da transmissão microbiana em serviços de saúde. Método: revisão integrativa, utilizando as bases de dados MEDLINE (via PubMed), Web of Science, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Scopus e Literatura Latino-Americana em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), sem restrição de idioma e período de publicação. Após a busca na literatura científica, foram selecionados sete estudos para análise quanto ao tipo de têxtil e substância utilizada para a impregnação, a aplicabilidade no serviço de saúde e a redução da carga microbiana. Resultados: nanopartículas de prata e óxido de cobre foram as principais substâncias antimicrobianas utilizadas para a impregnação de têxteis. A utilização desses têxteis pelos pacientes, como roupas de hotelaria e vestuário, mostrou maior eficácia na redução da carga microbiana em comparação ao uso como uniforme por profissionais de saúde. Conclusão: a utilização de têxteis impregnados com substâncias antimicrobianas, sobretudo pelos pacientes, pode ser considerada uma alternativa viável na prevenção e no controle da transmissão microbiana nos serviços de saúde. Todavia, a implementação destes têxteis, como uniforme para profissionais de saúde, ainda necessita de maiores investigações quanto à redução da carga microbiana na prática clínica.

La utilización de esos textiles por los pacientes, como ropa de hotel y ropa, demostró mayor eficacia en la reducción de la carga microbiana en comparación al uso como uniforme por profesionales sanitarios. Conclusión: la utilización de textiles impregnados con sustancias antimicrobianas, sobre todo por los pacientes, puede ser considerada una alternativa viable en la prevención y control de la transmisión microbiana en los servicios sanitarios. Sin embargo, la implementación de estos textiles como uniforme para profesionales de la salud todavía necesita de mayores investigaciones en cuanto a la reducción de la carga microbiana en la práctica clínica.

The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the inadequacy of the U.S. healthcare system to deliver timely and resilient care. According to the American Hospital Association, the pandemic has created a $202 billion loss across the healthcare industry, forcing health care systems to lay off workers and making hospitals scramble to minimize supply chain costs. However, as the demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) grows, hospitals have sacrificed sustainable solutions for disposable options that, although convenient, will exacerbate supply strains, financial burden, and waste. We advocate for reusable gowns as a means to lower health care costs, address climate change, and improve resilience while preserving the safety of health care workers. Reusable gowns' polyester material provides comparable capacity to reduce microbial cross-transmission and liquid penetration. In addition, previous hospitals have reported a 50% cost reduction in gown expenditures after adopting reusable gowns; given the current 2000% price increase in isolation gowns during COVID-19, reusable gown use will build both healthcare resilience and security from price fluctuations. Finally, with the United States' medical waste stream worsening, reusable isolation gowns show promising reductions in energy and water use, solid waste, and carbon footprint. The gowns are shown to withstand laundering 75-100 times in contrast to the single-use disposable gown. The circumstances of the pandemic forewarn the need to shift our single-use PPE practices to standardized reusable applications. Ultimately, sustainable forms of protective equipment can help us prepare for future crises that challenge the resilience of the healthcare system.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in complete saturation of healthcare capacities, making it necessary to reorganise healthcare systems. In this context, we must guarantee the provision of acute stroke care and optimise code stroke protocols to reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and rationalise the use of hospital resources. The Madrid Stroke multidisciplinary group presents a series of recommendations to achieve these goals. METHODS: We conducted a non-systematic literature search using the keywords "stroke" and "COVID-19" or "coronavirus" or "SARS-CoV-2." Our literature review also included other relevant studies known to the authors. Based on this literature review, a series of consensus recommendations were established by the Madrid Stroke multidisciplinary group and its neurology committee. RESULTS: These recommendations address 5 main objectives: 1) coordination of action protocols to ensure access to hospital care for stroke patients; 2) recognition of potentially COVID-19-positive stroke patients; 3) organisation of patient management to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection among healthcare professionals; 4) avoidance of unnecessary neuroimaging studies and other procedures that may increase the risk of infection; and 5) safe, early discharge and follow-up to ensure bed availability. This management protocol has been called CORONA (Coordinate, Recognise, Organise, Neuroimaging, At home). CONCLUSIONS: The recommendations presented here may assist in the organisation of acute stroke care and the optimisation of healthcare resources, while ensuring the safety of healthcare professionals.
