RESUMO

Understanding how systemic biases influence local ecological communities is essential for developing just and equitable environmental practices that prioritize both human and wildlife well-being. With over 270 million residents inhabiting urban areas in the United States, the socioecological consequences of racially targeted zoning, such as redlining, need to be considered in urban planning. There is a growing body of literature documenting the relationships between redlining and the inequitable distribution of environmental harms and goods, green space cover and pollutant exposure. However, it remains unknown whether historical redlining affects the distribution of urban noise or whether inequitable noise drives an ecological change in urban environments. Here we conducted a spatial analysis of how urban noise corresponds to the distribution of redlining categories and a systematic literature review to summarize the effects of noise on wildlife in urban landscapes. We found strong evidence to indicate that noise is inequitably distributed in redlined urban communities across the United States, and that inequitable noise may drive complex biological responses across diverse urban wildlife, reinforcing the interrelatedness of socioecological outcomes. These findings lay a foundation for future research that advances relationships between acoustic and urban ecology through centring equity and challenging systems of oppression in wildlife studies.

An animal model of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is useful for pathologists, therapists, pharmacologists, and hearing researchers to thoroughly understand the mechanism of NIHL, and subsequently optimize the corresponding treatment strategies. This study aims to create an improved protocol for developing a mouse model of NIHL. Male C57BL/6J mice were used in this study. Unanesthetized mice were exposed to loud noises (1 and 6 kHz, presented simultaneously at 115-125 dB SPL-A) continuously for 6 h per day for 5 consecutive days. Auditory function was assessed 1 day and 1 week after noise exposure, using auditory brainstem response (ABR). After the ABR measurement, the mice were sacrificed, and their organs of Corti were collected for immunofluorescence staining. From the auditory brainstem response (ABR) measurements, significant hearing loss was observed 1 day after noise exposure. After 1 week, the hearing thresholds of the experimental mice decreased to ~80 dB SPL, which was still a significantly higher level than the control mice (~40 dB SPL). From the results of immunofluorescence imaging, outer hair cells (OHCs) were shown to be damaged. In summary, we created a model of NIHL using male C57BL/6J mice. A new and simple device for generating and delivering pure-tone noise was developed and then employed. Quantitative measurements of hearing thresholds and morphological confirmation of OHC damage both demonstrated that the applied noise successfully induced an expected hearing loss.

Underwater noise pollution is an increasing threat to marine ecosystems. Marine animals use sound in communication and orientation processes. The introduction of anthropogenic noise in their habitat can interfere with sound production and reception as well as with the acquisition of vital information through other sensory systems. In the blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), the statocyst is responsible for acoustic perception, and it is housed at the base of its first pair of antennae (antennule). The sensilla of the distal part of these antennule hosts the olfactory system, which is key for foraging. Given the anatomical proximity of the two sensory regions, we evaluated the possible interference of sound exposure with the crab ability to find food, by using an aquatic maze, and looked at the potential impairment of the righting reflex as well as at ultrastructural damages in statocysts. Although a significant effect was observed when looking at the time used by the animal to recover its habitual position ("righting reflex"), which was associated to lesions in the statocyst sensory epithelia, the time required to find food did not increase after the exposure to sound. When the crabs were exposed to natural sounds (marine background noise and sounds of their predators: Micropogonias undulates and Sciaenops ocellatus) they did not show significant differences in foraging behaviour. Although we found no unequivocal evidence of a negative impact of sound on olfactory capabilities, the study showed a clear righting reflex impairment correlated with ultrastructural damages of the statocysts. We argue that crab populations that cannot easily avoid noise sources due to their specific coastal distributions may incur in significant direct fitness costs (e.g. impairment of complex reflexes). This integrated approach to sound effect assessment could be used as a model for other invertebrate species to effectively monitor noise impact in marine environments.

Experience shows the occurrence of situations when the measurements of impulse noise parameters are made with measurement equipment unsuitable for such conditions. The results of using such equipment were compared with the results of using equipment with a sufficiently large upper limit of the measurement range. The analysis was carried out on the example of noise generated during shots from a Mossberg smooth-bore shotgun and AKM rifle, as well as produced in the forge. The use of the unsuitable equipment allowed to indicate the exceeding of the exposure limit value of the peak value of the signal (LCpeak), but this is not always possible when determining the energy properties of the signal (LEX,8h). While the inadequate properties of the measurement equipment will generally not prevent the conclusion that noise in a particular workplace is hazardous to hearing, the results of measurements cannot be used to select hearing protectors.

Premature infants often require prolonged hospitalisation in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) where they are exposed to adverse noise that may disrupt sleep and further compromise recovery and developmental outcomes. This single-session trial assessed the effects of a novel circumaural hearing protection device (DREAMIES®; NEATCAP Medical LLC) on sleep in 10 premature infants (mean 34.1 weeks GA) in a Level III NICU. Using polysomnography (PSG), the infant's sleep was compared between three interfeed periods throughout which DREAMIES® was ON or OFF. Each infant received the same condition order, OFF1-ON-OFF2. The PSG 30 s epochs were scored by a rater masked to the condition as Quiet Sleep, Active Sleep, Indeterminate Sleep, and Wake. There was a 14.1% increase in sleep from OFF1 to ON (p = 0.05) and an 18.4% decrease in sleep from ON to OFF2 (p = 0.02); an analogous inverse effect was observed for wake (χ2  = 5.03, p = 0.08). There was a main effect of DREAMIES on active sleep (χ2  = 7.4, p = 0.025) due to more active sleep for ON1 (46%) compared with OFF2 (32%; p = 0.074). No significant effect was observed for quiet sleep or indeterminate sleep. On average, the sound level was 51 dBA (range 36-113 dBA) and did not differ significantly among the three periods. The strongest relationship between the minute-by-minute maximum sound level and movement actigraphy was observed for the OFF1 condition (ρ0.301, p < 0.001). These findings suggest that DREAMIES® may augment sleep in premature infants by reducing acute episodes of adverse noise in the NICU.

Acoustic noise and other environmental variables represent potential confounds for animal research. Of relevance to auditory research, sustained high levels of ambient noise may modify hearing sensitivity and decrease well-being among laboratory animals. The present study was conducted to assess environmental conditions in an animal facility that houses nonhuman primates used for auditory research at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Sound levels, vibration, temperature, humidity and luminance were recorded using an environmental monitoring device placed inside of an empty cage in a macaque housing room. Recordings lasted 1 week each, at three different locations within the room. Vibration, temperature, humidity and luminance all varied within recommended levels for nonhuman primates, with one exception of low luminance levels in the bottom cage location. Sound levels at each cage location were characterized by a low baseline of 58-62 dB sound pressure level, with transient peaks up to 109 dB sound pressure level. Sound levels differed significantly across locations, but only by about 1.5 dB. The transient peaks beyond recommended sound levels reflected a very low noise dose, but exceeded startle-inducing levels, which could elicit stress responses. Based on these findings, ambient noise levels in the housing rooms in this primate facility are within acceptable levels and unlikely to contribute to hearing deficits in the nonhuman primates. Our results establish normative values for environmental conditions in a primate facility, can be used to inform best practices for nonhuman primate research and care, and form a baseline for future studies of aging and chronic noise exposure.

The occlusion effect (OE) occurs when the earcanal becomes occluded by an in-ear device, sometimes leading to discomforts experienced by the users due to the augmented perception of physiological noises, or to a distorted perception of one's own voice. The OE can be assessed objectively by measuring the amplification of the low-frequency sound pressure level (SPL) in the earcanal using in-ear microphones. However, as revealed by methodological discrepancies found in past studies, the measurement of this objective occlusion effect (OEobj) is not standardized. With the goal of proposing a robust yet simple methodology adapted for field assessment, three experimental aspects are investigated: (i) stimulation source and the stimulus's characteristics to induce the phenomenon, (ii) measurement method of the SPL in earcanal, (iii) indicator to quantify the OEobj. To do so, OEobj is measured on human participants in laboratory conditions. Results obtained with a specific insert device suggest using the participant's own voice combined with simultaneous measurements of the SPLs based on the noise reduction method and using a single value indicator leads to a simple yet robust methodology to assess OEobj. Further research is necessary to validate the results with other devices and to generalize the methodology for field assessment.

Although the behavioral pure-tone threshold audiogram is considered the gold standard for quantifying hearing loss, assessment of speech understanding, especially in noise, is more relevant to quality of life but is only partly related to the audiogram. Metrics of speech understanding in noise are therefore an attractive target for assessing hearing over time. However, speech-in-noise assessments have more potential sources of variability than pure-tone threshold measures, making it a challenge to obtain results reliable enough to detect small changes in performance. This review examines the benefits and limitations of speech-understanding metrics and their application to longitudinal hearing assessment, and identifies potential sources of variability, including learning effects, differences in item difficulty, and between- and within-individual variations in effort and motivation. We conclude by recommending the integration of non-speech auditory tests, which provide information about aspects of auditory health that have reduced variability and fewer central influences than speech tests, in parallel with the traditional audiogram and speech-based assessments.

Previous Monte Carlo simulations have quantified the extent to which dose (sound level) uncertainty in community noise dose-response surveys can bias the shape of inferred dose-response functions. The present work extends the prior findings to create a mathematical model of the biasing effect. The exact effect on any particular data set depends on additional attributes (situational variables) beyond dose uncertainty itself. Several variables and their interaction effects are accounted for in the model. The model produced identical results to the prior Monte Carlo simulations and thereby demonstrated the same slope reduction effect. This model was further exercised to demonstrate the nature and extent of situational variable interaction effects related to the range of doses employed and their distribution across the range. One manifestation was a false asymptotic behavior in the observed dose-response relationship. The mathematical model provides a means to not only predict dose uncertainty effects but also to serve as a foundation for correcting for such effects in regression analyses of transportation noise dose-response relationships.

Evaluating risks associated with multiple occupational exposures is no easy task, especially when chemical and physical nuisances are combined. In most countries, public institutions have created databases, which gather extensive information on occupational exposures or work-related diseases. Unfortunately, these tools rarely integrate medical and exposure information, and, above all, do not take into account the possible adverse effects of co-exposures. Therefore, an attempt to exploit and join different existing databases for the assessment of the health effects of multiple exposures is described herein. This case study examines three French databases describing exposures to noise and/or ototoxic chemicals (i.e., toxic to the ear) and the incidence rate of occupational deafness in different sectors. The goals were (1) to highlight occupational sectors where the workers are the most (co)exposed and (2) to determine whether this approach could confirm the experimental data showing that this co-exposure increases the risk of developing hearing loss. The results present data per occupational sector exposing workers to noise only, ototoxic chemicals only, noise and ototoxic chemicals, and neither of these two nuisances. The ten sectors in which the proportion of exposed workers is the highest are listed. This analysis shows that the rate of hearing loss in these sectors is high but does not show an increased incidence of hearing loss in co-exposed sectors.

This work is a cross-sectional comparative study conducted on 528 residents in the slum and non-slum areas of Pokhara, Nepal. Of the total number of respondents, 90.2% in the slums and 63.3% in the non-slums indicated the existence of a main source of noise, and 80.7% in the slums and 66.0% in the non-slums replied that they had been highly annoyed by noise. The indoor noise levels measured for 24 h were higher in slums than in non-slums, ranging from 59 to 78 dBA and from 51 to 69 dBA, respectively. The Mann-Whitney U test showed a significantly poorer status of slum dwellers in four health domains. Logistic regression analysis identified that living in a slum was a significant predictor (OR, 2.35; 95% CI, 1.35-4.09) of a low level of health. Meanwhile, a high level of noise annoyance was a good determinant (OR, 6.71; 95% CI, 3.13-14.36) of low quality of life among slum dwellers revealing a distinguishing negative effect of the high level of noise annoyance in the slum areas.

Modern apartments in major cities are usually made of lightweight structures with inadequate acoustic properties, leading to a growing number of noise complaints by residents of inadequate sound insulation in high-rise buildings. When a toilet is flushed, loud and irregular sounds like humming, gurgling, or bubbling, "explosive" fury from vacuum-assisted toilets are generated. Though these toilet flushing sounds are not very harmful, they can still be perceived as nuisances by users nearby. The toilet flushing noise has posed a serious concern among apartment occupants and adjacent residents, causing health problems like sleep disturbance and irritation. In this study, the psychoacoustical investigations have been performed in four stages. In the first stage, the toilet flushing noise was recorded for several toilets with two designs: a close-coupled floor-mount toilet and a back-to-wall mount toilet. The second stage evaluated the physical and psychoacoustical characteristics of those recorded flushing sounds using psychoacoustic analysis software. The noise qualities were determined in the third stage by assessing autocorrelation function/interaural cross correlation function factors from the post-processed recorded sound data. Finally, we designed and successfully demonstrated an innovative acoustic meta-absorber prototype for mitigating the toilet flushing noise. The results have revealed a significant reduction in loudness because of meta-absorbers.

In earlier research, both higher levels of noise and odour annoyance have been associated with decreased mental health. Presumably, these perceptions can trigger feelings of threat and stress reactions and in turn evoke psychological distress. There are two important lacunas in the research on this topic: most studies only consider either noise or odour annoyance and not their relative effect on psychological distress and there is scarce evidence about whether different sociodemographic groups experience more psychological distress due to noise and odour annoyance. Starting from the diversity in the available coping resources and in their daily life patterns, we distinguish gender, age and educational level as relevant sociodemographic variables. Using data from the Health Monitor (n = 25236) in Noord-Brabant, we found using Ordinary Least Squares Regression that individuals that reported higher levels of noise and odour annoyance reported higher levels of psychological distress. Furthermore, the effect of noise annoyance was relatively stronger compared to that of odour annoyance. Regarding the interaction effects, we found that younger adults' psychological distress was more strongly affected by noise annoyance compared to older adults, but not by odour annoyance. The psychological distress of individuals with no or primary education was more strongly affected by both noise and odour annoyance compared those with tertiary education, but not when compared to those who completed lower or higher secondary education. Contrary to our expectations, we did not find different effects between men and women. Though the evidence for the interactions was mixed, classic health inequalities along age and education lines are reinforced when considering the relationship between noise and odour annoyance and psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: Noise has been a major issue in children due to its effect on emotional symptoms and sleep problems. The present study investigated the effect of noise on sleep and autonomic activity in children according to three variables, namely, road traffic noise, aircraft noise, and noise sensitivity (NS). METHODS: The study is epidemiological in nature. A total of 474 subjects of four elementary schools were evaluated in conjunction with the 2014 noise map data gathered from two metropolitan regions, Seoul and Ulsan, in South Korea. Each subject completed the children's sleep habits questionnaire, and heart rate variability (HRV) was recorded. Analysis of covariance was performed using monthly income as a covariate. RESULTS: Aircraft noise was associated with night waking (P = 0.047), whereas no significant association was observed between sleep and road traffic noise. After stratifying by NS, no significant results were obtained for road traffic noise. However, high levels of aircraft noise in the high-NS group were associated with high degrees of bedtime resistance (P = 0.049). In terms of HRV, no significant difference was observed in the results between groups. CONCLUSION: Road traffic noise did not significantly alter sleep or autonomic activity in children, whereas aircraft noise exerted a negative effect on sleep. The findings suggest that the impact of noise on sleep in children varies depending on noise sources.

Noise is a major source of pollution with a strong impact on health. Noise assessment is therefore a very important issue to reduce its impact on humans. To overcome the limitations of the classical method of noise assessment (such as simulation tools or noise observatories), alternative approaches have been developed, among which is collaborative noise measurement via a smartphone. Following this approach, the NoiseCapture application was proposed, in an open science framework, providing free access to a considerable amount of information and offering interesting perspectives of spatial and temporal noise analysis for the scientific community. After more than 3 years of operation, the amount of collected data is considerable. Its exploitation for a sound environment analysis, however, requires one to consider the intrinsic limits of each collected information, defined, for example, by the very nature of the data, the measurement protocol, the technical performance of the smartphone, the absence of calibration, the presence of anomalies in the collected data, etc. The purpose of this article is thus to provide enough information, in terms of quality, consistency, and completeness of the data, so that everyone can exploit the database, in full control.

Hearing protection devices reduce cast-saw noise. It would be helpful to identify the devices that are both effective and economical. Prior studies have shown that expensive noise-reduction headphones significantly reduced the anxiety associated with cast removal with a powered oscillating saw. The cost of such headphones, however, is a drawback for some practices and hospitals. It would be helpful to determine whether lower cost ear protection can provide effective cast-saw noise reduction. In addition, it is unclear whether the noise reduction ratings (NRRs), the average sound-level reduction provided by a hearing protection device in a laboratory test, provided by manufacturers accurately characterize the effectiveness for reducing cast-saw noise. Note that noise-cancelling devices do not carry an NRR because they are not designed as hearing protectors. Five ear protection devices with different NNRs were tested. The devices varied greatly in cost and included earplugs, low-cost earmuffs, and noise-cancelling headphones. To standardize the evaluation, each device was fitted to an acoustic mannequin with high-fidelity ear microphones while a fiberglass spica cast was cut. An additional test was run without hearing protection as a control. The low-cost devices significantly reduced the saw noise, with the exception of earplugs, which had highly variable performance. The noise reduction was similar between low-cost earmuffs and the high-cost earphones when the noise-cancelling feature was not active. Active noise cancelling provided further reductions in the noise level. Patients can experience high anxiety during cast removal. The current study shows that low-cost earmuffs significantly reduce cast-saw noise. Patient care settings may be more likely to offer hearing protection that is one twenty-fifth the cost of noise-cancelling headphones. An NRR appears to be a reliable guide for selecting hearing protection that reduces cast-saw noise.

Rail transport is the second most important way of transporting people and freights by land in the European Union. Rail noise affects around 12 million people in the European Union during the day and around 9 million at night. There are two possible ways to assess environmental noise: noise measurement in situ and prediction using mathematical models. The aim of the work is based on the performed measurements and selected noise predictions to evaluate the accuracy of the prediction models and assess their sensitivity to various aspects. Two measuring points in the Banská Bystrica Self-Governing Region, within Slovakia, were selected for measurement, which is characterized by increased mobility of the population. For prediction, the two methodologies were selected (Schall 03 and Methodical instructions for the calculation of sound pressure level from transport). The results show that the Schall 03 method is sensitive to the measurement location (the value reaches half of the significance level) and to the location-period interaction. The second prediction method is sensitive to systematic error (absolute term) and, such as Schall 03, to the location-period interaction. This method systematically overestimates the results. Results showed greater accuracy of both prediction models compared to the measured noise values than the results of the authors in other countries and conditions.

This paper deals with the question of how specific weather conditions affect the perception of aircraft noise. Auralization is a suitable method by enabling parametrical decompositions of the overall aircraft noise scenario into source and propagation components. Considering influences on the auditory perception, the signal processing chain contains different virtual receivers and post processing using psychoacoustic hearing models. For broad coverage, generic standardized as well as measurement-based atmosphere models with variation of ground impedances such as soil data are evaluated. These variations are given aircraft noise measurement values based on A-weighted sound pressure levels LA and psychoacoustic measures regarding loudness, N, and sharpness, S. The results show an immense influence of weather conditions on A-weighted sound pressure levels and on psychoacoustic perception of aircraft noise, too. The weather-dependent differences of A-weighted sound pressure levels are up to 15 dBA and relative differences regarding loudness of factor 1.6 and sharpness of factor 2.0 occur. The approach can be used to get a better understanding of how the temporal statistics of specific local weather conditions and their perceptual consequences may lead to improved taxation of actual noise events and to an improved basis for long-term averages of aircraft noise effects.

BACKGROUND: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods allow for real-time, real-world survey data collection. Studies with adults have reported EMA as a feasible and valid tool in the measurement of real-world listening experience. Research is needed to investigate the use of EMA with children who wear hearing aids. OBJECTIVES: This study explored the implementation of EMA with children using a single-blinded repeated measures design to evaluate real-world aided outcome. METHODS: Twenty-nine children, aged 7-17, used manual program switching to access hearing aid programs, fitted according to Desired Sensation Level (DSL) version 5.0 child quiet and noise prescriptive targets. Aided outcome was measured using participant-triggered twice-daily EMA entries, across listening situations and hearing dimensions. RESULTS: Adherence to the EMA protocol by the children was high (82.4% compliance rate). Speech loudness, understanding and preference results were found to relate to both the hearing aid program and the listening situation. Aided outcomes related to prescription-based noise management were found to be highest in noisy situations. CONCLUSIONS: Mobile device-based EMA methods can be used to inform daily life listening experience with children. Prescription-based noise management was found to decrease perceived loudness in noisy, non-school environments; this should be evaluated in combination with hearing aid noise reductions features.
