Introduction/rationale: In 2006, the Senegalese government set up a health coverage programme for people aged 60 and over - the Plan Sésame - to provide free medical care in all the country's public health facilities. This scheme has been integrated into the Universal Health Coverage (CMU) promoted from 2013. The objective of the study was to describe and analyse the knowledge and representations of professionals and users about health coverage and the Plan Sésame, the use of the scheme by the elderly, to evaluate the amount of medical expenses incurred during a routine medical consultation for the monitoring of their illness (hypertension and diabetes), and to calculate the out-of-pocket expenses related to the consultation. Material and methods: Study conducted between July 2020 and October 2021 in two public health facilities in Dakar. Mixed approach: 1/ qualitative study by semi-directive interviews, informal interviews, observations and field diary with 35 people selected according to a reasoned choice procedure with the aim of diversifying gender, age, social status, therapeutic itineraries for 23 people (including 12 women, ages between 60 and 85 years), and professional activities for 12 health actors; 2/ quantitative cross-sectional study by questionnaire of 225 people (including 141 women) aged 60 and over; we calculated the total cost of the consultation and associated prescriptions (complementary examinations and medicines) as well as the remaining medical expenses (out-of-pocket) and the cost of transporting patients. This is a descriptive exploratory study of a non-representative sample of the elderly population in Senegal. Results: The health professionals interviewed supported the principle of health coverage, but most of them had limited and sometimes imprecise knowledge of the existing schemes and the methods of access or the services covered. Their point of view about the consequences of the Plan Sésame on their practice reveals some contradictions: some complain about the increase in workload, the criticism is extended to all the free schemes which would have a negative impact on daily practice because of the increase in the number of consultations which would be linked to abuse by patients.The interviews highlight the heterogeneity of the knowledge of elderly people about the health coverage intended for them, even though the Plan Sésame has been in place for over ten years. The interviews clearly show that the use of the health coverage system by the elderly depends closely on the information they have and their ability to use it, both for women and men. There is a close link between the level of social integration of people and their use of health coverage: the most socially integrated people are those who know how to use CMU services best. The use of health coverage by the elderly appears to vary according to the individual.Although Plan Sésame is defined as part of a national strategy, its implementation varies according to the health structures and the periods; in the two study sites, the range of services covered by Plan Sésame is very limited, so the coverage provided by Plan Sésame is only partial: between 30 and 50% of the medical costs; the remaining cost of a consultation for elderly patients with hypertension and/or diabetes varies between 24,000 and 28,000 CFA francs.These amounts must be put into perspective with the resources available to people. Statistical studies published in 2021 report that in Senegal the average daily expenditure is 1,390 CFA francs/person/day; and that almost 38% of the population lives on 913 CFA francs/person/ day, which is the poverty line calculated in 2019. Thus, the average out-of-pocket expenses for a follow-up consultation for hypertension, diabetes or a combination of the two diseases represent 15 to 30 days of daily expenditure. While the vast majority of elderly people in Senegal do not have a retirement pension, health expenses are therefore borne by their relatives. Within households, medical expenditure for the elderly competes with basic needs, particularly food, which usually take up more than half of household resources. This indispensable family support places the elderly in a situation of total dependence. Conclusions: In 2021, Plan Sésame does not yet allow for completely free care for the elderly. However, its application, even partial, has resulted in a real reduction in health care costs for the elderly. Its use remains limited due to inconsistent application by most health structures. Its impact is insufficient in view of the amounts that users have to pay in a context of social and economic vulnerability. These observations reinforce the need to work on reducing the price of medical services and strengthening the UHC, in order to improve the equity and performance of the system, and to make it fully functional in all health structures.

Sesame allergy is a growing concern worldwide. In this study, sesame proteins was glycated with glucose, galactose, lactose and sucrose respectively, and the allergenicity of different glycated sesame proteins were assessed by a comprehensive strategy, including simulated gastrointestinal digestion in vitro, a BALB/c mice model, a rat basophilic leukemia (RBL)-2H3 cell degranulation model and a serological experiment. Firstly, simulated gastrointestinal digestion in vitro showed that glycated sesame proteins were more easily to digest than raw sesame. Subsequently, the allergenicity of sesame proteins was assessed in vivo by detecting the allergic indexes of mice, and results showed that the levels of total immunoglobulin E (IgE) and histamine were reduced in glycated sesame proteins treated mice. Meanwhile, the Th2 cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13) were downregulated significantly, demonstrating that sesame allergy was relieved in glycated sesame treated mice. Thirdly, the RBL-2H3 cell degranulation model results showed that the release of ß-hexosaminidase and histamine were decreased to different degrees in glycated sesame proteins treated groups. Notably, the monosaccharide glycated sesame proteins exhibited lower allergenicity both in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, the study also analyzed the structure alteration of sesame proteins, and the results showed that the secondary structure of glycated sesame proteins were changed (the content of α-helix and ß-sheet were reduced), and the tertiary structure of sesame proteins after glycation modification was also changed (microenvironment around aromatic amino acids was altered). Besides, the surface hydrophobicity of glycated sesame proteins was also reduced except sucrose glycated sesame proteins. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that glycation reduced the allergenicity of sesame proteins effectively, especially glycation with monosaccharides, and the allergenicity reduction might be related to structural changes. The results will provide a new reference for developing hypoallergenic sesame products.

The aim of this study was to conduct thermal characterization of sesame seeds and oils from various geographical origins (Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Sudan, Turkey), different method of extraction (hexane and cold-pressing), and different types of derived products (halva and tahini). Thermal characterization was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), which showed that origin of the seeds has no influence on the melting profile of sesame oil (peak temperature and enthalpy). Method of extraction (hexane and cold-pressing) influenced the peak temperatures of the resulting oils (p ≤ 0.05). The addition of 20% of palm olein to pure sesame oil influenced the significant changes in thermodynamic parameters such as peak temperature (Tm2), which was lowered from −5.89 °C to −4.99 °C, peak half width (T1/2), elevated from 3.01 °C to 4.52 °C, and the percentage of first peak area (% peak 1) lowered from 87.9 to 73.2% (p ≤ 0.05). The PCA method enabled to distinguish authentic and adulterated sesame oils of various origins. There were no significant differences in thermal properties among the products (halva, tahini) and the authentic sesame oil (p > 0.05). The obtained results showed DSC feasibility to characterize sesame oil and sesame products in terms of authenticity.

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), of the Pedaliaceae family, is one of the first oil crops used in humans. It is widely grown and has a mellow flavor and high nutritional value, making it very popular in the diet. Sesame seeds are rich in protein and lipids and have many health benefits. A number of in vitro and in vivo studies and clinical trials have found sesame seeds to be rich in lignan-like active ingredients. They have antioxidant, cholesterol reduction, blood lipid regulation, liver and kidney protection, cardiovascular system protection, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and other effects, which have great benefits to human health. In addition, the aqueous extract of sesame has been shown to be safe for animals. As an important medicinal and edible homologous food, sesame is used in various aspects of daily life such as food, feed, and cosmetics. The health food applications of sesame are increasing. This paper reviews the progress of research on the nutritional value, chemical composition, pharmacological effects, and processing uses of sesame to support the further development of more functionalities of sesame.

Ethiopia's oilseed industry makes a major contribution to foreign exchange revenues. Ethiopia's three main oilseed crops (sesame, soybean, and Niger seed) account for about 20% of the country's total agricultural export profits, second only to coffee. Even though Ethiopia is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of sesame seeds, the country is facing increasing supply and demand restrictions. This paper begins with an examination of one of the most prominent oil crops in the country. It is a highly adaptable crop that may be used for anything from subsistence to commercial output. We established a comprehensive scientific understanding of the crop using a systematic review of the current literature and deductive logical reasoning that can be used to inform future research and policies. Various exclusion and inclusion criteria were used to filter the most notable findings. Millions of growers and other market participants are employed throughout the oilseed value chain. Reduced sesame productivity, pests and diseases, and limited access to modern technologies are all severe supply-side constraints. On the demand side, traders and market distortion, as well as an artificially higher home price and the ease with which unskilled labor can enter the market, are all factors. Other demand-side constraints include worldwide price volatility, a highly concentrated export market, and intense global competition. Ethiopia's sesame seed development potential is being severely hampered by these restrictions. If farmers, dealers, and the government do not address these issues strategically, the country may soon lose its competitiveness in the global sesame seed market. This will contribute to Ethiopia's ongoing discussion about how to better inform private and public sector policies and investments to increase sesame production, transform agriculture, improve nutrition and food systems, and be able to ease supply- and demand-side restrictions. In a nutshell, an increased area under cultivation combined with best agronomic practices could boost sesame production. Farmers, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders must thus intervene to enhance sesame production. Future studies should concentrate on how to boost sesame output in farmers' fields while following appropriate sesame production technology and agronomic principles.

Sesamum indicum (sesame) is a small seed legume, which is of nutritional and medicinal value to livestock. Sesame is a legume with positive attributes that include drought tolerance (owing to its extensive rooting system), low input demand for growth, and reduction of soil nematodes (in crop rotation systems). Attention in research has been shifted towards usage of sesame as human food to exploitation as livestock feed because of its high levels in crude protein (CP), minerals, amino acids, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). However, it is underutilized as a livestock feed resource in Southern Africa. In recent years, there has been increasing interest to cultivate the crop in Southern African countries through non-governmental organizations (NGOs) initiatives. The focus of such initiatives has been mainly production without value addition of the seed. At present in Southern Africa, widespread adoption of feeding strategies based on sesame has been restricted mainly due to lack of knowledge on production, marketing and value addition, availability of the seed, and technology adoption. Technology adoption is often limited specifically when oil extraction is considered, where by-products such as the meal are useful in animal production. This paper reviews the potential use of sesame to improve growth rates, feed intake, carcass qualities, meat quality, milk quality, milk yield, and blood metabolite levels of small ruminants. Production potential, economic feasibility, and strategies of using sesame in small-ruminant feeding programs are also outlined.

Heating is a key procedure in producing sesame paste. The effects of microwave heating and conventional roasting on the physicochemical features, protein profiles, and volatile compounds of black sesame pastes made of black sesame seeds from Burma and China were evaluated in this study. All heating treatments decreased the moisture contents of black sesame pastes, and roasting yielded lower moisture levels, although with similar chroma (p < 0.05). The samples subjected to microwave heating had remarkably lower peroxide values than those heated with roasting (p < 0.05). Chinese microwave-heated samples had a higher nitrogen solubility index than roasting (p < 0.05). Both microwave and roasting increased the contents of the volatiles notably. SDS-PAGE showed that the intensity of the 2-15 kDa band decreased markedly after heating and nearly diminished for roasting samples, suggesting that roasting was more remarkable for the promotion to the protein aggregation. The results indicated that the quality traits of black sesame paste not only depend on the heating methods, but also the heating power/temperature and duration, and the source of the materials.

To achieve the nutritional target of human food, boron (B) has been described as an essential mineral in determining seed and theoretical oil yield of Sesamum indicum L. The research to increase its cultivation is garnering attention due to its high oil content, quality and its utilization for various purposes, which include human nutrition as well as its use in the food industry. For this, a two-year field experiment was performed at PAU, Punjab, India to determine the effect of different concentrations of foliar-applied B (20, 30 and 40 mg L-1) and different growth stages of crop, i.e., we measured the effects on agroeconomic indicators and certain quality parameters of sesame using different concentrations of B applied at the flowering and capsule formation stages as compared to using water spray and untreated plants. Water spray did not significantly affect the studied parameters. However, B application significantly increased the yield, uptake, antioxidant activity (AOA) and theoretical oil content (TOC) compared to those of untreated plants. The maximum increase in seed yield (26.75%), B seed and stover uptake (64.08% and 69.25%, respectively) as well as highest AOA (69.41%) and benefit to cost ratio (B:C ratio 2.63) was recorded when B was applied at 30 mg L-1 at the flowering and capsule formation stages. However, the maximum sesame yield and B uptake were recorded when B was applied at a rate of 30 mg L-1. A significant increase in TOC was also recorded with a B application rate of 30 mg L-1. For efficiency indices, the higher values of boron agronomic efficiency (BAE) and boron crop recovery efficiency (BCRE) were recorded when B was applied at 20 mg L-1 (5.25 and 30.56, respectively) and 30 mg L-1 (4.96 and 26.11, respectively) at the flowering and capsule formation stages. In conclusion, application of B @ 30 mg L-1 at the flowering and capsule formation stages seemed a viable technique to enhance yield, B uptake and economic returns of sesame.

Despite the intensive use of sesame in the Middle Eastern diet, studies on this allergen in this region are lacking. A survey on the occurrence of sesame in Lebanese food products that did not contain this allergen as an ingredient, a food consumption survey conducted in Beirut schools, and the most recent sesame eliciting dose estimates were used to build a probabilistic risk assessment model providing estimates of sesame-induced allergic reactions per eating occasion and per week in Lebanese children and adolescents. Of 1270 food samples analysed, 34% contained sesame proteins (0.44-3392 mg kg-1). Sesame was detected in 47% of unlabeled bulk samples, 43% of samples with PAL, and 27% of samples without PAL. "Sfouf" had the highest concentration of sesame proteins (mean 549 mg kg-1), highest mean exposure per eating occasion (78 mg sesame proteins for children and 103 mg sesame proteins for adolescents), and posed the highest predicted risk per eating occasion (>20%) and per week (>13% individuals predicted in simulation experience at least 1 reaction). Bakery products (notably "sfouf") may pose a serious risk to sesame-allergic children and adolescents in Lebanon. Enhanced guidance on the use of PAL is needed to better protect allergic consumers.

BACKGROUND: Microbial contamination of edible low moisture food poses a significant public health risk for human. In this study, the microbial quality of sweet dehulled sesame seed croquettes, salted dehulled sesame seed and the raw sesame seed, sold under ambient conditions were examined. The samples were collected in the cities of Burkina Faso. The first type is sweet dehulled sesame seed croquettes (n1 = 25); the second type is salted dehulled sesame seed (n2 = 25) and the third type is raw sesame seed (n3 = 25). Assessment of the microbial quality was based on the total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, the thermotolerant coliforms, the yeasts and moulds, the E. coli, and the Salmonella spp. using ISO methods. RESULTS: The results showed the presence of microorganisms varying from <1.0 to 1.72 × 105 CFU g- 1 for thermotolerant coliforms, from <1.0 to 6,12 × 106 CFU g- 1 for the total mesophilic aerobic flora and from <1.0 to 8.10 × 105 CFU g- 1 for yeasts and moulds. The higher contaminations rates were mostly observed in raw sesame seed samples. No E coli or Salmonella pathogens were detected. Based on international standards of dehydrated food, 50.67% of the ready to eat sesame are satisficing while 17.33% are acceptable and 32% are not satisficing. CONCLUSION: Attention should be emphasized on the processing practices, especially in crowded places where RTE sesames seeds are mostly sold. The high numbers of all microbial groups in these sesame seed samples suggested that the production of RTE sesame seed should be improved by better hygiene. This study highlights also that RTE sesame seed might harbor a wide range of microorganisms when processes are weak of hygiene.

Sesame allergy is a public health problem in many countries around the world. The purpose of this study is to determine the occurrence of sesame allergen in unlabelled or labelled free-sesame Middle Eastern foods with or without Precautionary Allergen Labelling (PAL) 'may contain' and estimate the risk incurred by the Canadian population allergic to sesame with a focus on products purchased in Middle Eastern grocery stores and bakeries in Montreal, Canada. A total of 571 samples were analysed to determine the level of sesame protein. Of the 571 samples analysed, 19% (109/571) contained sesame (results >LOQ) with concentrations of sesame proteins varying between 0.5 and 1,875 mg kg-1 and 35% (199/571) contained traces (a value between LOD and LOQ). Unpackaged products were found to present the highest proportion of sesame containing samples (36%). For packaged products, 16% (27/173) of samples with PAL and 3% (5/173) without PAL were found to contain sesame. A probabilistic approach was used to estimate the risk incurred by the Canadian consumers allergic to sesame. Our evaluation estimated that 33 to 308 allergic reactions may occur out of 10 000 individuals ingesting one type of bakery product contaminated at a level of 0.6-74 mg kg-1 sesame proteins. The incidence and level of sesame cross-contact reported in this study demonstrate that sesame allergic consumers could react if they ignore the precautionary allergen statements on product labels. Attention to sesame as a potential cross-contact agent and as a priority allergen calls for better management, given the growing interest in this ingredient to be included in food formulations. Enhanced risk management efforts must be coupled with targeted risk communication covering both producers and consumers as to the need to adopt and an approach for the application of precautionary allergen labelling based on risk.

The current study sought to characterize implicit bias toward children with autism and examine whether viewing educational materials about autism would change attitudes toward children with autism. A website developed by Sesame Street containing information about autism and resources for families was distributed to parents of children with autism (n = 473) and parents of children without autism (n = 707). Pre- and post-test measures of implicit bias toward children with autism; explicit attitudes and knowledge about autism; and parenting confidence, strain, and stigma were completed before and after the website was presented. Results indicated that parents of children with autism showed less implicit bias compared with those of non-autistic children during the pre-test, but the groups did not differ at the post-test. Parents without autistic children and those with more negative explicit attitudes showed a greater reduction in implicit bias from the pre- to the post-test. In addition, for parents of children with autism, a more positive change in explicit attitudes and increased knowledge from the pre- to the post-test was associated with more empowerment at the post-test. Together, our findings suggest that the online educational resources can reduce implicit bias against children with autism and help mitigate some of the psychological issues associated with parenting children with autism.

ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to determine the occurrence of 16 well-recognized and emerging mycotoxins in black and white sesame seed samples sold in Thailand and to evaluate possible health risks to consumers. Samples were extracted and cleaned with a modified QuEChERS procedure. Multiple mycotoxins in sesame seed samples were analyzed with a validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method. The risk of mycotoxin exposure via dietary intake of sesame seeds was evaluated based on the hazard quotient, margin of exposure (MOE), and quantitative liver cancer risk established by European Food Safety Authority, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and the World Health Organization. Of the 200 samples, 21.5% were contaminated with mycotoxins, 19.5% were contaminated with a single mycotoxin, and 2% were contaminated with multiple mycotoxins. Although 9% of total samples were contaminated with aflatoxins (AFs), only one black sesame seed sample and one white sesame seed sample were above the regulatory limits for the European Union (2 µg/kg). The MOE values derived from consumption of black and white sesame seeds were generally <10,000, especially in the group consuming the most. The number of liver cancer cases over a lifetime associated with AFB1 exposure based on the upper bound values for the group consuming high level of black and white sesame seeds (97.5 percentile) was estimated at more than 1 case per one million persons. Therefore, a potential risk to consumer health exists through the consumption of black and white sesame seeds and subsequent exposure to AFB1. However, further evaluation with larger sample sizes is necessary for more accurate calculations. Continuous monitoring of mycotoxin contamination in sesame seeds with risk assessments is recommended.

BACKGROUND: Food allergy is a substantial health burden, which disproportionately affects children. Among children with food allergy, as many as 70% have multiple food allergies. Whereas the overall burden of food allergy on quality of life has been described, little is known about the burden of individual allergens. We aimed to examine the perception of burden among families with multiple food-allergic children. METHODS: Parents of children with 1 + children with multiple food allergies including milk responded to online questions, including both open-ended and closed-ended questions on food allergy-related burdens of time, financial costs, social restrictions, and emotional demands. RESULTS: Overall, 64 children (69.8% boys) of whom (73.0%) most were aged 10 and younger were included. Most had been diagnosed with food allergy in infancy and by a (pediatric) allergist. Other common allergies included peanut (65.6%), tree nuts (57.8%), egg (76.6%), and sesame (31.3%). Quantitatively, milk allergy was reported as carrying the most burden, including most socially limiting (81.5%), requiring the most planning (75.9%), causing the most anxiety (68.5%), most challenging to find "safe" or allergy-friendly foods (72.2%), and costly (81.5%). Qualitatively, we identified five themes that captured burdens associated with costs, marketing of milk products to children, risk of cross-contamination, ubiquity of milk/dairy and public confusion with lactose intolerance, and an unwillingness of others to accommodate the allergy. CONCLUSION: Parents whose children have multiple food allergies, including milk, report milk as the allergy associated with the greatest time, financial, social, and emotional burdens.

Food allergy and allergen management are important global public health issues. In 2011, the first iteration of our allergen threshold database (ATDB) was established based on individual NOAELs and LOAELs from oral food challenge in roughly 1750 allergic individuals. Population minimal eliciting dose (EDp) distributions based on this dataset were published for 11 allergenic foods in 2014. Systematic data collection has continued (2011-2018) and the dataset now contains over 3400 data points. The current study provides new and updated EDp values for 14 allergenic foods and incorporates a newly developed Stacked Model Averaging statistical method for interval-censored data. ED01 and ED05 values, the doses at which 1%, and respectively 5%, of the respective allergic population would be predicted to experience any objective allergic reaction were determined. The 14 allergenic foods were cashew, celery, egg, fish, hazelnut, lupine, milk, mustard, peanut, sesame, shrimp (for crustacean shellfish), soy, walnut, and wheat. Updated ED01 estimates ranged between 0.03 mg for walnut protein and 26.2 mg for shrimp protein. ED05 estimates ranged between 0.4 mg for mustard protein and 280 mg for shrimp protein. The ED01 and ED05 values presented here are valuable in the risk assessment and subsequent risk management of allergenic foods.

An 87-day feeding trial was carried out to assess the use of dehulled and defatted sesame seed meal (SM) as a partial dietary replacement for soybean meal (SBM) at 0%, 15%, 30% and 45% (SM0, SM1, SM2 and SM3, respectively) in juvenile sea bass stocked in 12 tanks (0.5 m3) and with an initial weight of 24 ± 0.50 g. All diets were isonitrogenous (~ 47% crude protein), isoenergetic (~ 22 MJ/kg) and tested in triplicate. The lowest growth and feed utilization efficacy were detected in fish fed the SM3 diet; moreover, diets with a lower SM content did not have significant effects relative to the CTR diet. Fish biochemical analysis indicated a gradual decrease in carcass protein content coinciding with an increase in lipid deposition and viscerosomatic index values as the SM level in the diet increased. The macroelements' (P, Na and K) fish contents did not differ significantly among groups. The SM3 group had the lowest Ca and highest Mg contents among the experimental groups. The fish amino acid profile indicated slight alterations in essential amino acid percentages among groups. Haematological analysis and serum biochemistry indicated that using SM at a content of up to 30% had limited negative impacts on fish health. Liver histological inspection indicated that higher levels of SM led to severe hepatocyte infiltration with slight signs of necrosis in fish fed SM3 diet. Intestinal histological examinations indicated that the distal portion of the intestine was the portion most affected by SBM replacement with SM with signs of intestinal inflammation in SM3 group.

Food plants contain hundreds of bioactive phytochemicals arising from different secondary metabolic pathways. Among these, the metabolic route of the amino acid Tryptophan yields a large number of plant natural products with chemically and pharmacologically diverse properties. We propose the identifier "indolome" to collect all metabolites in the Tryptophan pathway. In addition, Tryptophan-rich plant sources can be used as substrates for the fermentation by yeast strains to produce pharmacologically active metabolites, such as Melatonin. To pursue this technological development, we have developed a UHPLC-MS/MS method to monitor 14 Tryptophan, Tryptamine, amino-benzoic, and pyridine metabolites. In addition, different extraction procedures to improve the recovery of Tryptophan and its derivatives from the vegetal matrix were tested. We investigated soybeans, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, and spirulina because of their botanical diversity and documented healthy effects. Four different extractions with different solvents and temperatures were tested, and water extraction at room temperature was chosen as the most suitable procedure to extract the whole Tryptophan metabolites pattern (called by us "indolome") in terms of ease, high efficiency, short time, low cost, and sustainability. In all plant matrices, Tryptophan was the most abundant indole compound, while the pattern of its metabolites was different in the diverse plants extracts. Overall, 5-OH Tryptamine and Kynurenine were the most abundant compounds, despite being 100-1000-fold lower than Tryptophan. Melatonin was undetected in all extracts, but sesame showed the presence of a Melatonin isomer. The results of this study highlight the variability in the occurrence of indole compounds among diverse food plants. The knowledge of Tryptophan metabolism in plants represents a relevant issue for human health and nutrition.

Mutualistic biotic interactions as among flowering plants and their animal pollinators are a key component of biodiversity. Pollination, especially by insects, is a key element in ecosystem functioning, and hence constitutes an ecosystem service of global importance. Not only sexual reproduction of plants is ensured, but also yields are stabilized and genetic variability of crops is maintained, counteracting inbreeding depression and facilitating system resilience. While experiencing rapid environmental change, there is an increased demand for food and income security, especially in sub-Saharan communities, which are highly dependent on small scale agriculture. By combining exclusion experiments, pollinator surveys and field manipulations, this study for the first time quantifies the contribution of bee pollinators to smallholders' production of the major cash crops, cotton and sesame, in Burkina Faso. Pollination by honeybees and wild bees significantly increased yield quantity and quality on average up to 62%, while exclusion of pollinators caused an average yield gap of 37% in cotton and 59% in sesame. Self-pollination revealed inbreeding depression effects on fruit set and low germination rates in the F1-generation. Our results highlight potential negative consequences of any pollinator decline, provoking risks to agriculture and compromising crop yields in sub-Saharan West Africa.

This study prepared a carboxylic functionalized bioadsorbent that met the "4-E" criteria: Efficient, Economical, Environmentally friendly, and Easily-produced. Sesame straw (Sesamum indicum L.) was functionalized through treatment with citric acid (SSCA) and tartaric acid (SSTA). The products were examined for adsorption capacity and mechanisms. Langmuir model gave the best fit for the isotherm data, and the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of SSCA was 650mgg-1 for methylene blue (MB). The excellent dye adsorption capacity of SSCA can be attributed to the introduction of ester groups during citric-acid modification and the tube-like structures (i.e., sesame straw cell wall remnants). At last, the cost of carboxylic acid functionalized bioadsorbents was evaluated, which showed that SSCA would be the most cost-effective bioadsorbent. Additionally, this study presents a thermo-decomposition methodology for contaminant-loaded bioadsorbent. Results showed that SSCA is probably one of the few bioadsorbents that can be produced and applied in industrial scale.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of boiling and roasting on the proximate, lipid oxidation, fatty acid profile and mineral content of two sesame seeds varieties. The proximate composition was significantly affected (P<0.05) during treatments. The minerals of seeds roasting at 120°C for 10min were significantly decreased. The free fatty acids content of sesame oil after processing was significantly increased (P<0.05). Iodine and peroxide value were also affected by processing. Totox and p-Anisidine values were significantly increased during processing. The fatty acids composition a little modified during processing, and roasting at 180°C for 10min mostly affected the polyunsaturated fatty acids for all sesame varieties. C16:0, C18:0, C18:1 and C18:2 were quantitatively the most important fatty acids in sesame oil. Boiling appeared to be the best processing method for cooking the two sesame varieties concerning oxidative stability and fatty acid profile.
