Purpose: Achromatopsia (ACHM) is an autosomal recessive retinal disease associated with reduced or absent cone function. There is debate regarding the extent to which cone structure shows progressive degeneration in patients with ACHM. Here, we used optical coherence tomography (OCT) images to evaluate outer nuclear layer (ONL) thickness and ellipsoid zone (EZ) integrity over time in individuals with ACHM. Methods: Sixty-three individuals with genetically confirmed ACHM with follow-up ranging from about 6 months to 10 years were imaged using either Bioptigen or Cirrus OCT. Foveal cone structure was evaluated by assessing EZ integrity and ONL thickness. Results: A total of 470 OCT images were graded, 243 OD and 227 OS. The baseline distribution of EZ grades was highly symmetrical between eyes (P = 0.99) and there was no significant interocular difference in baseline ONL thickness (P = 0.12). The EZ grade remained unchanged over the follow-up period for 60 of 63 individuals. Foveal ONL thickness showed a clinically significant change in only 1 of the 61 individuals analyzed, although detailed adaptive optics imaging revealed no changes in cone density in this individual. Conclusions: ACHM appears to be a generally stable condition, at least over the follow-up period assessed here. As cones are the cellular targets for emerging gene therapies, stable EZ and ONL thickness demonstrate therapeutic potential for ACHM, although other aspects of the visual system need to be considered when determining the best timing for therapeutic intervention.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we used ultra-wide field swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (UWF SS-OCTA) to assess changes in retinal thickness (RT) and choroidal parameters in individuals who had received a diagnosis of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). METHODS: The study encompassed the evaluation of 59 eyes from 47 patients with a diagnosis of CSC, alongside 33 fellow eyes and 31 eyes from healthy individuals (controls). The parameters assessed included RT, choroidal thickness (CT), choriocapillaris density, vascular density of the large choroidal vessel layer, three-dimensional choroidal vascularity index (3D-CVI), choroidal vessel volume per unit area (mCVV/a), and choroidal stroma volume per unit area (mCSV/a). RESULTS: Metrics including mCVV/a, mCSV/a, 3D-CVI, CT, and RT exhibited significantly elevated values in the eyes affected by CSC compared to those of the control group across nine subfields. Moreover, a substantial number of the subfields in both CSC-affected and fellow eyes exhibited increased values for mCVV/a, mCSV/a, 3D-CVI, CT, and RT when compared with the control group. Additionally, acute and chronic CSC subfields demonstrated significantly elevated values for mCVV/a, mCSV/a, 3D-CVI, CT, and RT in comparison to healthy control eyes. Notably, specific subfields associated with complex and atypical forms of CSC revealed higher metrics compared to those of the control group. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the UWF SS-OCTA proved to be a valuable tool for exploring the anatomical etiology and clinical classification and diagnosis of CSC.

PURPOSE: Proof of concept of ex vivo retinal vessel diameter measurements in human postmortem eyes. METHODS: En face near-infrared (IR) images and optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the optic nerve head (ONH) were captured ex vivo with a Heidelberg Engineering Spectralis (Spectralis, version 7.0.4, Image Capture Module, version 1.2.4, Heidelberg Heidelberg, Germany) device, using a custom-made eye chamber holding and positioning the eyes during the image process. Thirty-two formaldehyde-fixated eyes of 16 patients were imaged. In the IR images, two independent graders measured retinal vessel diameters at the intersection of a drawn circle centered on the ONH with diameters of 2.0 mm and 3.4 mm, respectively. The anatomically corresponding measurements between both graders were statistically analyzed using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS: A total of 246 matched measurements of both graders were analyzed across all 32 imaged eyes. Statistically significant differences between the graders were found for arterioles at 2 mm from the ONH. The other measurements did not show statistically significant intergrader differences. The mean values for arteriole diameters were 72.2 µm at 2.0 mm and 61.5 µm at 3.4 mm for grader 1, and 66.4 µm at 2.0 mm and 63.2 µm at 3.4 mm for grader 2. The mean diameter for venules were 75.5 µm at 2.0 mm and 79.3 µm at 3.4 mm for grader 1, and 67.4 µm at 2 mm and 79.1 µm at 3.4 mm for grader 2. CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to present IR image-based retinal vessel diameters in ex vivo postmortem eyes. Retinal IR/OCT imaging is possible, and measurements are reproducible in formaldehyde-fixated human eyes. Fixation artefacts result in lower image quality, and this can impose challenges in correctly detecting, classifying, and measuring retinal vessels.

BACKGROUND: The precision of anterior segment biometric measurements in eyes has become increasingly important in refractive surgery. The purpose of this study is to assess the repeatability of the automatic measurements provided by a new spectral-domain optical coherence tomograph (SD-OCT)/Placido topographer (MS-39, CSO) and its agreement with a swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) biometer (CASIA SS-1000, Tomey) in patients with myopia. METHODS: The right eye of 235 subjects was scanned 3 times with both devices. The evaluated parameters included central corneal radius of the steep meridian, central corneal radius of the flat meridian, mean central corneal radius, thinnest corneal thickness, central corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth, corneal volume and diameter. The intraobserver repeatability of the MS-39 measurements was calculated using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), within subject standard deviation, coefficient of repeatability, coefficient of variation and repeated-measures analysis of variance of the 3 repeated measurements. The agreement between the two devices was evaluated by 95% limits of agreement (LoA). RESULTS: The majority of the parameters acquired from MS-39 showed high repeatability. The repeatability of corneal diameter was slightly lower than the other measurements, although the ICC remained high. Agreement with the CASIA SS-1000 was good, indicated by the Bland-Altman plots with narrow 95% LoA values for all parameters assessed. CONCLUSIONS: The high repeatability of automatic measurements by the new device supports its clinical application in eyes with myopia, and the good agreement between the two devices indicates they could be used interchangeably for the parameters evaluated.

Primary congenital glaucoma is a rare disease that occurs in early birth and can lead to low vision. Evaluating affected children is challenging and there is a lack of studies regarding color vision in pediatric glaucoma patients. This cross-sectional study included 21 eyes of 13 children with primary congenital glaucoma who were assessed using the Farnsworth D-15 test to evaluate color vision discrimination and by spectral domain optical coherence tomography to measure retinal fiber layer thickness. Age, visual acuity, cup-to-disc ratio and spherical equivalent data were also collected. Global and sectional circumpapillary and macular retinal fiber layer thicknesses were measured and compared based on color vision test performance. Four eyes (19%) failed the color vision test with diffuse dyschromatopsia patterns. Only age showed statistical significance in color vision test performance. Global and sectional circumpapillary and macular retinal fiber layer thicknesses were similar between the color test outcomes dyschromatopsia and normal. While the color vision test could play a role in assessing children with primary congenital glaucoma, further studies are needed to correlate it with damage to retinal fiber layer thickness.

Accurate assessment of corneal curvatures using frequency domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) with galvanometer scanners remains challenging due to the well-known scan field distortion. This paper presents an algorithm and software for correcting the distortion using only two simple measurements in which a readily available standard sphere is positioned in different depths in front of the OCT scanner. This offers a highly accessible and easily reproducible method for the field distortion correction (FDC). The correction was validated by measuring different spherical phantoms and conducting corneal curvature measurements of ex vivo porcine corneas using a commercial spectral-domain OCT system and a clinically approved swept-source OCT as a reference instrument. Thus, the error in radius measurements of spherical phantoms was reduced by >90% and astigmatism by >80% using FDC. In explanted porcine eyes, the error in astigmatism measurements with the Telesto was reduced by 75% for power and 70% for angle. The best fitting sphere radius was determined up to a deviation of 0.4% from the Anterion. This paper describes a correction algorithm for OCT immanent distortion that is applicable to any scanning OCT setup and enables precise corneal curvature measurements. The MATLAB software for the FDC is publicly available on GitHub.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Retinal imaging allows non-invasive assessment of the microvasculature. Consequently, retinal imaging is a technology which is garnering increasing attention as a means of assessing cardiovascular health and stroke risk. METHODS: A biomedical literature search was performed to identify prospective studies that assess the role of retinal imaging derived biomarkers as indicators of stroke risk. RESULTS: Twenty-four studies were included in this systematic review. The available evidence suggests that wider retinal venules, lower fractal dimension, increased arteriolar tortuosity, presence of retinopathy, and presence of retinal emboli are associated with increased likelihood of stroke. There is weaker evidence to suggest that narrower arterioles and the presence of individual retinopathy traits such as microaneurysms and arteriovenous nicking indicate increased stroke risk. Our review identified three models utilizing artificial intelligence algorithms for the analysis of retinal images to predict stroke. Two of these focused on fundus photographs, whilst one also utilized optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology images. The constructed models performed similarly to conventional risk scores but did not significantly exceed their performance. Only two studies identified in this review used OCT imaging, despite the higher dimensionality of this data. CONCLUSION: Whilst there is strong evidence that retinal imaging features can be used to indicate stroke risk, there is currently no predictive model which significantly outperforms conventional risk scores. To develop clinically useful tools, future research should focus on utilization of deep learning algorithms, validation in external cohorts, and analysis of OCT images.

Background and objectives: We aimed to investigate changes in the radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) network using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in patients who recovered from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study of patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 bilateral pneumonia between March and May 2021. The control group included healthy individuals matched for age and sex. Two months after discharge, the patients underwent ophthalmological examination, including optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging. The RPC network and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) of the optic disc (RNFL optic disc) were automatically evaluated and compared between the study groups. Additionally, the RPC parameters were compared between the men and women in the COVID-19 group, and correlations between the RPC and RNFL optic disc parameters were assessed. Results: A total of 63 patients (120 eyes) with bilateral pneumonia caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection were examined. No ophthalmic symptoms were reported by the patients. No significant differences were observed in the RPC parameters between the patients from the COVID-19 group and the 43 healthy controls. Moreover, the RPC parameters did not differ between the men and women in the COVID-19 group. A positive correlation was found between the RPC and RNFL optic disc parameters in the COVID-19 patients (p < 0.001). Conclusions: No changes in the RPC network were observed among the patients with COVID-19 bilateral pneumonia in the early period after hospital discharge. However, a longer follow-up is needed to monitor COVID-19-related changes in the microvasculature of the optic nerve head.

It is known that working in the shift system, especially the night shift, affects physical, mental, and social well-being. We investigated the changes in the inner retinal layers and choroidal layer of the eyes of nurses working night and day shifts using optical coherence tomography (OCT). We also explored the effect of night shift work on metacognition and the relationships between these variables. A total of 79 nurses participated in the study, of whom 40 worked night shifts. The researcher gave the participants sociodemographic information and the Metacognition Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30) form. Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness, inner nuclear layer (INL) thickness, inner plexiform layer (IPL) thickness, central macular thickness (CMT), and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) were measured with OCT. It was found that the level of metacognitive activity associated with cognitive confidence was higher (p = 0.044) for nurses who worked night shifts and that the level of metacognitive activity associated with cognitive awareness was lower (p = 0.015) for nurses who worked night shifts. RNFL-nasal superior (NS) thickness was lower in night shift workers than the day shift group (p = 0.017). Our study revealed significant relationships between metacognition and the OCT findings among night and day shift workers. Our study revealed that RNFL measurements and metacognitive activity may differ and there may be a relationship between these parameters in nurses who work shifts. Further research is needed to investigate the long-term effects of night shift work on retinal health.

BACKGROUND: Intravascular imaging and intracoronary physiology may both be used to guide and optimize percutaneous coronary intervention; however, they are rarely used together. The virtual flow reserve (VFR) is an optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based model of fractional flow reserve (FFR) facilitating the assessment of the physiological significance of coronary lesions. We aimed to validate the VFR assessment of intermediate coronary artery stenoses. METHODS: FUSION (Validation of OCT-Based Functional Diagnosis of Coronary Stenosis) was a multicenter, prospective, observational study comparing OCT-derived VFR to invasive FFR. VFR was mathematically derived from a lumped parameter flow model based on 3-dimensional lumen morphology. Patients undergoing coronary angiography with intermediate angiographic stenosis (40%-90%) requiring physiological assessment were enrolled. Investigational sites were blinded to the VFR analysis, and all OCT and FFR data were reviewed by an independent core laboratory. The coprimary end points were the sensitivity and specificity of VFR against FFR as the reference standard, each of which was tested against prespecified performance goals. RESULTS: After core laboratory review, 266 vessels in 224 patients from 25 US centers were included in the analysis. The mean angiographic diameter stenosis was 65.5%±14.9%, and the mean FFR was 0.83±0.11. Overall accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of VFR versus FFR using a binary cutoff point of 0.80 were 82.0%, 80.4%, and 82.9%, respectively. The 97.5% lower confidence bound met the prespecified performance goal for sensitivity (71.6% versus 70%; P=0.01) and specificity (76.6% versus 75%; P=0.01). The area under the curve was 0.88 (95% CI, 0.84-0.92; P<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: OCT-derived VFR demonstrates high sensitivity and specificity for predicting invasive FFR. Integrating high-resolution intravascular imaging with imaging-derived physiology may provide synergistic benefits as an adjunct to percutaneous coronary intervention. BACKGROUND: Performing a surgical task subjects the surgeon to multitudinal stressors, especially with the newer 3D technology. The quantum of cognitive workload using this modern surgical system in comparison to the Conventional microscope system remains unexplored. We evaluate the surgeon's cognitive workload and the surgical outcomes of macular hole(MH) surgery performed on a 3D versus a Conventional microscope operating system. METHODS: 50 eyes of 50 patients with MH undergoing surgery using the 3D or Conventional microscope visualization system. Cognitive workload assessment was done by real-time tools(Surgeons' heart rate [HR] and oxygen saturation[SPO2]) and self-report tool(Surgery Task Load Index[SURG-TLX] questionnaire) of three Vitreoretinal surgeons. Based on the SURG-TLX questionnaire, an assessment of the workload was performed. RESULTS: Of the 50 eyes, 30 eyes and 20 eyes underwent surgery with the Conventional microscope and the 3D system, respectively. No difference was noted in the MH basal-diameter(p = 0.128), total surgical-duration(p = 0.299), internal-limiting membrane(ILM) peel time(p = 0.682), and the final visual acuity (VA; p = 0.515) between the two groups. Both groups showed significant improvement in VA(p < 0.001) with a 90% closure rate at one-month post-surgery. Cognitive workload comparison, the intraoperative HR(p = 0.024), total workload score(P = 0.005), and temporal-demand dimension(p = 0.004) were significantly more in Conventional microscope group as compared to 3D group. In both the groups, the HR increased significantly from the baseline while performing ILM peeling and at the end. CONCLUSION: The surgeon's cognitive workload is markedly reduced while performing macular hole surgery with a 3D viewing system. Moreover, duration of surgery including ILM peel time, MH closure rates, and visual outcomes remains unaffected irrespective of the operating microscope system.

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS), a significant cardiovascular disease threat, has garnered increased focus concerning its etiological mechanisms. Thin-cap fibroatheroma (TCFA) are central to ACS pathogenesis, characterized by lipid-rich plaques, profuse foam cells, cholesterol crystals, and fragile fibrous caps predisposed to rupture. While TCFAs may be latent and asymptomatic, their pivotal role in ACS risk is undeniable. High-resolution imaging techniques like Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) are instrumental for effective TCFA detection. Therapeutic strategies encompass pharmacological and interventional measures, including antiplatelet agents, statins, and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), aiding in plaque stabilization, inflammation reduction, and rupture risk mitigation. Despite the strong correlation between TCFAs and adverse prognoses in ACS patients, early detection and rigorous treatment significantly enhance patient prognosis and diminish cardiovascular events. This review aims to encapsulate recent advancements in TCFA research within ACS, covering formation mechanisms, clinical manifestations, and prognostic implications.

PURPOSE: To assess the relationship between structural and functional tests in mild and moderate idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). METHODS: Patients with mild and moderate IIH and a control group were enrolled. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), macular ganglion cell layer (MGCL) thickness, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pp RNFL) thickness, perimetric mean deviation (MD), and photopic negative responses (PhNR) of the electroretinogram were recorded. The associations between structural (pp RNFL and MGCL thickness) and functional (PhNR amplitude, MD and BCVA) parameters were assessed. RESULTS: 154 eyes from 78 subjects (74 eyes from IIH patients and 80 eyes from healthy subjects) were included in this comparative observational study. The MGCL thickness, VA, pp RNFL, and PhNR base-to-trough (BT) amplitude were significantly worse in moderate IIH. The BCVA and MD were associated with MGCL thickness only in moderate IIH. The relationship between MD and MGCL thickness started when MD fell below -5.7 dB. CONCLUSIONS: The association between functional and structural parameters varies between mild and moderate IIH. The MD and MGCL thickness outperformed in assessing disease severity in mild and moderate IIH, respectively. The association between MD and MGCL thickness could be considered in IIH severity categorization.

Internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling requires a delicate handling technique. It is also important that ophthalmologists can use the ILM forceps handle of their preference. This study objectively and subjectively evaluated the handling of the novel Finesse Reflex Handle (Reflex) in comparison with that of a conventional handle. The force required to close the forceps tips, evaluated using a digital force gauge, was significantly lesser for Reflex than for the conventional handle (3.14 ± 0.09 N vs. 3.84 ± 0.06 N, P < 0.001). Twenty-one ophthalmologists with various levels of experience answered a questionnaire after using both handles, and the total questionnaire score for Reflex was higher than that for the conventional handle (35.0 ± 3.7 vs. 30.0 ± 6.9, P = 0.01). Furthermore, the duration of experience as an ophthalmologist was negatively correlated with the vertical motion, assessed by video analysis, for the conventional handle (P = 0.02, r = - 0.50) but not for Reflex (P = 0.26). In conclusion, objective and subjective analyses revealed that compared with the conventional handle, the novel Reflex handle had more favourable handling characteristics. Most ophthalmologists preferred the handling of Reflex. Reflex may compensate for a lack of surgical experience.

Colorectal cancer (CC) is one of the most predominant malignancies in the world, with the current treatment regimen consisting of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Chemotherapeutic drugs, such as 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), have gained popularity as first-line antineoplastic agents against CC but have several drawbacks, including variable absorption through the gastrointestinal tract, inconsistent liver metabolism, short half-life, toxicological reactions in several organ systems, and others. Therefore, herein, we develop chitosan-coated zinc-substituted cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CZCFNPs) for the pH-sensitive (triggered by chitosan degradation within acidic organelles of cells) and sustained delivery of 5-FU in CC cells in vitro. Additionally, the developed nanoplatform served as an excellent exogenous optical coherence tomography (OCT) contrast agent, enabling a significant improvement in the OCT image contrast in a CC tissue phantom model with a biomimetic microvasculature. Further, this study opens up new possibilities for using OCT for the non-invasive monitoring and/or optimization of magnetic targeting capabilities, as well as real-time tracking of magnetic nanoparticle-based therapeutic platforms for biomedical applications. Overall, the current study demonstrates the development of a CZCFNP-based theranostic platform capable of serving as a reliable drug delivery system as well as a superior OCT exogenous contrast agent for tissue imaging.

OBJECTIVE: To compare large- and medium-sized choroidal vascularity and the choriocapillaris (CC) flow area in children with different refractive errors using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA). METHODS: Forty-two anisometropic children were enrolled and divided into hyperopic anisometropia (HA) and myopic anisometropia (MA) groups. SS-OCTA was performed to analyse choroidal vascularity. Mean choroidal thickness (CT), choroidal vascularity volume (CVV), choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and CC flow area were compared between the two eyes. The inter-ocular differences between the two groups were also determined. RESULTS: Mean CT and CVV were highest in eyes with shorter axial lengths in both refractive groups, and the difference between the two eyes was positively correlated with the difference in axial length at the foveal region. Significant differences in the CVI in the MA group were only found in the parafoveal region. Inter-ocular differences in the CC were significantly reduced in eyes with longer axial lengths in the foveal and parafoveal regions of the HA and MA groups, respectively. Comparing inter-ocular differences, CC was significantly greater in the parafoveal region of the MA group than the HA group. CONCLUSIONS: All layers of choroidal vasculature were thinner in eyes with longer axial lengths in all groups. The inter-ocular CC difference was greater in the MA than in the HA group, with similar differences in axial length. This suggests that both medium-to-large choroidal vascular and choroidal capillaries may play a role in myopia development.

BACKGROUND: Imaging plays a pivotal role in eye assessment. With the introduction of advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), the focus has shifted to imaging datasets in ophthalmology. While disparities and health inequalities hidden within data are well-documented, the ophthalmology field faces specific challenges to the creation and maintenance of datasets. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is useful for the diagnosis and monitoring of retinal pathologies, making it valuable for AI applications. This review aims to identify and compare the landscape of publicly available optical coherence tomography databases for AI applications. METHODS: We conducted a literature review on OCT and AI articles with publicly accessible datasets, using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. The review retrieved 183 articles, and after full-text analysis, 50 articles were included. From the included articles were identified 8 publicly available OCT datasets, focusing on patient demographics and clinical details for thorough assessment and comparison. RESULTS: The resulting datasets encompass 154,313 images collected from Spectralis, Cirrus HD, Topcon 3D, and Bioptigen devices. These datasets included normal exams, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic maculopathy, among others. Comprehensive demographic information is available in one dataset and the USA is the most represented population. DISCUSSION: Current publicly available OCT databases for AI applications exhibit limitations, stemming from their non-representative nature and the lack of comprehensive demographic information. Limited datasets hamper research and equitable AI development. To promote equitable AI algorithmic development in ophthalmology, there is a need for the creation and dissemination of more representative datasets.

BACKGROUND: Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) has frequently been associated with increased stress levels as well as an increased prevalence of other psychiatric conditions. This study used standardized psychometric scores to assess stress, depression and anxiety levels of CSC patients and compared them to controls without retinal disease ("healthy") and with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). METHODS: Monocentric, longitudinal case control study on consecutive CSC patients seen at a tertiary referral center. Controls without retinal disease were recruited from the oculoplastics clinic and those with BRVO from the medical retina clinic. Patients completed pseudonymized tests measuring stress levels (PHQ-stress), depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety (GAD-7) at baseline and at 3- and 6-months follow-up. Higher scores indicated higher trait levels. RESULTS: 65 CSC patients, 19 healthy controls and 19 BRVO patients were included in this study. CSC patients showed significantly higher stress levels at baseline compared to controls (p = 0.009), but not compared to BRVO patients (p = 1.00). At 3- and 6-months follow-up, no significant difference between groups was observed anymore. Acute CSC patients showed higher scores than those with chronic CSC, which also subsided over time. Depression and anxiety scores did not differ between groups at any timepoint. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with CSC do not show higher initial stress levels than patients with BRVO, while anxiety and depression levels did not differ from controls. Stress may thus rather represent a consequence of the onset of visual deterioration observed in CSC or other ocular diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Zein-coated magnesium oxide nanoparticles (zMgO NPs) can potentially improve cement adaptation to the tooth-restoration interface, which would aid in minimizing marginal leakage and secondary caries. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of incorporating zMgO NPs on the adaptation of self-adhesive resin cement using cross-polarization optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). METHODS: Resin inlays were fabricated to be cemented in Class-I cavities of extracted human molars. All specimens were randomly divided into five groups (n = 10), and the resin inlays were cemented using self-adhesive resin cement with various concentrations of zMgO NPs (0% [control], 0.3%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%). Characterization was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and SEM. The specimens were examined for interfacial adaptation under CP-OCT. Floor and wall adaptation measurements were analyzed by software on 20 B-scans, and samples were sectioned for interfacial measurement by SEM. RESULTS: Results for CP-OCT and SEM showed a statistically significant increase of adaptation in the floor and wall of resin cement filled with zMgO NPs compared to the control. The samples enhanced with 0.3% and 0.5% showed a statistically significantly better adaptation in floor and wall in CP-OCT and SEM. However, there was no significant difference between the 1%, 2%, and control groups for CP-OCT and SEM analysis. SIGNIFICANCE: The incorporation of zMgO NPs in self-adhesive resin cement can enhance the cement's properties by significantly improving its wall and floor adaptation.

Purpose: To assess the retinal vasculature changes quantitatively using wide-field optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and explore its correlation with systemic clinical features. Design: Prospective, cross-sectional, observational study. Participants and controls: Patients with SLE who presented to the Ophthalmology Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital from November 2022 to April 2023 were collected. The subjects were divided into retinopathy and without retinopathy groups. Age and gender-matched healthy subjects were selected as controls. Methods: Patients with SLE and control subjects were imaged with 24×20 mm OCTA scans centered on the fovea and 6×6 mm OCTA scans centered on the optic disc. The sub-layers of OCTA images were stratified by the built-in software of the device and then the retinal thickness and vessel density were measured automatically. The characteristics of retinal OCTA parameters of SLE and its correlation with systemic clinical indicators of patients without retinopathy were analyzed. Main outcome measures: OCTA parameters, visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and systemic clinical indicators of patients such as disease activity index, autoimmune antibodies, and inflammatory marker levels were collected. Results: A total of 102 SLE patients were included, 24 of which had retinopathy, and 78 had unaffected retina. Wide-field OCTA could effectively detect retinal vascular obstruction, non-perfusion area, and morphological abnormalities in patients with lupus retinopathy. SLE patients without retinopathy had significantly higher retinal superficial vessel density (SVD) in foveal (P=0.02), para-foveal temporal (P=0.01), nasal (P=0.01), peripheral foveal temporal (P=0.02), and inferior areas (P=0.02), as well as subregion temporal (P=0.01) and inferior areas (P=0.03) when compared with healthy controls (n=65 eyes from 65 participants). The area under curve (AUC) value of subregion inferior SVD combined parafoveal temporal SVD was up to 0.70. There was a significantly positive correlation between SVD and disease activity in SLE without retinopathy group. Patients with severe activity had the most significant increase in SVD. Conclusion: Wide-field OCTA can provide a relatively comprehensive assessment of the retinal vasculature in SLE. In the absence of pathological changes of the retina, the SVD was significantly increased and was positively correlated with the disease activity of SLE.
