RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Achieving health equity and reducing racial and ethnic health disparities require intentional community engagement efforts by academicians. Primary among these efforts is the acknowledgement of research-related mistrust. Efforts to build trust must begin with recognition of the invaluable knowledge and experience community stakeholders possess. METHODS: The Meharry Community Engagement Core builds on the foundation provided by Meharry Medical College, a Historically Black College and University, to achieve its mission to improve health and health outcomes through long-term collaborative research partnerships with community stakeholders. Early in its development, the Core actively engaged community stakeholders throughout all research phases. RESULTS: Early successes include achieving community feedback on research priorities, policies, and procedures and developing partnerships that span the research spectrum. Core work to date is promising and may serve as a model for addressing research-related mistrust and efforts to build trust.

RESUMO

Objective: On the occasion of the American College Health Association's (ACHA) 100th anniversary, this article seeks to explore the second fifty years of its organizational history, as well as many of the key historical moments in the field of American college health. Materials and methods: This article examines ACHA's second fifty years, decade-by-decade, in key thematic areas that have driven focus, innovation and change at both ACHA and the field of college health and well-being, including: Changes in ACHA Governance, Leadership and Organizational Structure; Clinical Care, Immunizations, Emergency Preparedness and Outbreak Response; Health Promotion: Moving from Health to Wellness to WellBeing; Mental Health: Stigma, Suicide and Access to Care; Nursing Practice and Nurse Certification; Using Education, Research, Data and Publications to Drive Change and Innovation; Advocacy for the Health of College Students and Our College Communities; Growth and Development of the American College Health Foundation; and Recognizing Quality of Care, Excellence and Outstanding Contributions to ACHA. Results: ACHA's second fifty years have provided an enormous volume of high-quality programs and services, used to further improve the health and well-being of college students. The narrative shows that the organization has indeed met its mission over the past fifty years. The article concludes with predictions of changes and advances at ACHA in the next decade. Conclusions: Since 1920, ACHA has served as the voice for college student health and well-being in the United States. ACHA's second fifty years is a remarkable story of hard work, vision and achievement by a large number of talented and committed college health professionals, students and colleagues across college campuses and in sister professional organizations.

RESUMO

This text assesses the impact of the Cabanis reform on the formation of the health training model which became hegemonic in Brazil. First, we shall briefly discuss the process of constructing the social, ideological, and institutional framework for healthcare in post-revolutionary France. Next the main elements of the Cabanis reform are introduced, analyzing curricular and pedagogical aspects of the new plan for medical education based on professionalism, disciplines, and expertise that resulted in a system of higher education without universities. This is followed by assessment of the historical process which resulted in the "Francization" of the Brazilian educational system, particularly in higher education and more specifically medical education, producing a model of health training based on colleges, hospitals, classrooms, disciplines, skills, and diplomas.


O ensaio avalia o impacto da Reforma Cabanis na configuração do modelo de formação em saúde que se tornou hegemônico no Brasil. Primeiro, discute o processo de construção social, ideológica e institucional do modelo de assistência à saúde da França pós-revolucionária. Em seguida, introduz os principais elementos da Reforma Cabanis, analisando aspectos curriculares e pedagógicos da nova proposta de ensino médico baseado em profissionalismo, disciplinaridade e especialização que resultou num sistema de ensino superior sem universidades. Depois avalia o processo histórico que resultou no "afrancesamento" do sistema educacional brasileiro, resultando num modelo de formação em saúde baseado em faculdades, hospitais, aulas, disciplinas, especialidades e diplomas.

Rememorar medio siglo de rica historia de la docencia médica matancera nos conduce inexorablemente a la génesis de las condiciones socioeconómicas y políticas que marcaron el surgimiento de la Revolución Cubana, las cuales motivaron y conllevaron al surgimiento de la formación médica revolucionaria, su impronta, su ética signada por la equidad y justicia, el humanismo, la solidaridad y el internacionalismo, su nuevo modelo de formación, sus predios, sus escenarios, sus profesores y estudiantes, así como el impacto social que conllevó tan trascendental hecho para la historia de la Salud Pública en nuestro país y en particular, para nuestra provincia, la cual ha trascendido en el contexto internacional. Iniciemos un breve recorrido por la historia, a propósito de los fructíferos 50 años de docencia médica superior revolucionaria en la provincia de Matanzas. Sirva, pues, este modesto empeño, para reconocer a todos los que han participado en tan noble y grandiosa obra...(AU)


Summoning up half a century of the rich history of Matanzasan high medical education inexorably leads to the genesis of socio-economical and political conditions characterizing the beginning of the Cuban revolution; they motivated and led to the emergence of the revolutionary medical training, its imprint, its ethics signed by equity and justice, solidarity and internationalism, its new training model, its settings, its professionals and students; the social impact of that transcendental fact for the history of Public Health in our country and specially in our province is very important, and extends to the international context. Then, let's begging a short journey through the history on the purpose of these 50 years of high revolutionary medical teaching in the province of Matanzas, serving also as a recognition for all the people that has took part in this virtuous and outstanding task...(AU)

Julio Miguel Aristegui Villamil se gradúa de Doctor en Medicina en la Universidad de La Habana en 1929 y regresa a Cárdenas, su ciudad natal, a ejercer su profesión. Sus ideas progresistas lo afilian a la Izquierda Médica, dentro de la Federación Médica de Cuba. Por el ejercicio desinteresado de su profesión la población le llega a nombrar "el médico de los pobres" (AU).


Julio Miguel Aristegui Villamil graduated as doctor in Medicine in the University of Havana in 1929 and came back to Cardenas, his home city, to practice his profession. His progressive ideas led him to enroll in the Izquierdad Médica (Medical Left translated in English), a group inside the Medical Federation of Cuba. Because of the selfless practice of his profession, the people began to call him "the doctor of the poors" (AU).

RESUMO

Stanley Cobb founded the Harvard Departments of Neurology (1925) and Psychiatry (1934) with Rockefeller Foundation funding. Cobb was an important transitional figure in both neurology and psychiatry. He and his friend Alan Gregg were the most visible parts of the Rockefeller Foundation psychiatry project, which prepared American psychiatry for the rapid growth of psychiatric research after World War II. Edward Shorter called him the founder of American biological psychiatry, but this misunderstands Cobb and the Hegelian evolution of twentieth-century American psychiatry. I review the major role of the Rockefeller Foundation in the evolution of American academic psychiatry and the disappearance of Cobb's teaching and that of his mentor Adolf Meyer, a founding father of American academic psychiatry.

RESUMO

Engaged scholarship, a movement that has been growing steadily since 1995, offers a new way of bridging gaps between the university and civil society. Numerous papers and reports have been published since Boyer's foundational discourse in 1996. Yet, beyond a growing interest in orienting universities' missions, we observed a lack a formal definition and conceptualization of this movement. Based on a scoping review of the literature over the past 20 years, the objective of this article is to propose a conceptualization of engaged scholarship. More specifically, we define its values, principles, and processes. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of this new posture for faculty and students, as well as for the university as an institution.

BACKGROUND: Many Australian and New Zealand surgeons use the title 'Mister' rather than 'Doctor', a practice dating back to traditions established over 600 years ago. The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons is currently undergoing a period of critical self-reflection, embodied by its 'Respect' campaign. Active measures to embrace diversity and encourage women into surgery are underway. METHODS: This paper reviews the historical basis to the use of gendered titles and their current use amongst fellows. De-identified demographic data from the college register of active fellows was searched by self-identified title, country or state, and gender. Data were further reviewed by surgical sub-specialty and year of fellowship. RESULTS: The college dataset suggests that there is significant variance in the preference for gendered titles, determined predominantly by geography rather than specialty. The highest use of gendered titles (by male and female surgeons) was in Victoria/Tasmania (58% male, 22% female) and New Zealand (81% male, 17% female). By contrast, only 2% of female surgeons in other states elected a gendered title (Miss/Mrs/Ms). CONCLUSION: Surgery is the only profession that continues to use gendered titles. As the College of Surgeons moves towards greater equity and diversity, consideration should be given to phasing out the use of gendered titles, which serve to divide rather than unite our profession.

This paper addresses the history, composition and scientific value of one of the most comprehensive facemask collections in Africa, the Raymond A. Dart Collection of African Life and Death Masks. Housed within the School of Anatomical Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa), it comprises 1110 masks (397 life, 487 death, 226 unknown). Life masks represent populations throughout Africa; death masks predominately southern Africa. Males preponderate by 75%. Recorded ages are error prone, but suggest most life masks are those of <35 year-olds, death masks of 36+ year-olds. A total of 241 masks have associated skeletons, 209 presenting a complete skull. Life masks date between 1927 and c.1980s, death masks 1933 and 1963. This historical collection presents uncanny associations with outmoded typological and evolutionary theories. Once perceived an essential scientific resource, performed craniofacial superimpositions identify the nose as the only stable feature maintained, with the remaining face best preserved in young individuals with minimal body fat. The facemask collection is most viable for teaching and research within the history of science, specifically physical anthropology, and presents some value to craniofacial identification. Future research will have to be conducted with appropriate ethical considerations to science and medicine.

This paper examines how the Weizmann Institute of Science has been telling the story of the successful commercialization of a scientific invention, through its corporate communication channels, from the early 1970s to today. The paper aims to shed light on the transformation processes by which intellectual-property-based commercialization activities have become widely institutionalized in universities all over the world, and on the complexities, ambiguities and tensions surrounding this transition. We look at the story of the scientific invention of Copolymer-1 at the Weizmann Institute of Science and its licensing to Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, which subsequently developed the highly successful drug Copaxone for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. We argue that, in its tellings and retellings of the story of Copolymer-1, the Weizmann Institute has created narratives that serve to legitimize the institution of academic patenting in Israel.

RESUMO

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has been engaged in public health research and practice in Washington County, Maryland, nearly since its inception a century ago. In 2005, the center housing this work was renamed the George W. Comstock Center for Public Health Research and Prevention to honor its pioneering leader. Principles that guided innovation and translation well in the past included: research synergies and opportunities for translation realized through longstanding connection with the community; integration of training with public health research; lifelong learning, mentorship, and teamwork; and efficiency through economies of scale. These principles are useful to consider as we face the challenges of improving the health of the population over the next 100 years.
