ABSTRACT

Metakaolin, fly ash, and mostly granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) are traditionally used in the production of geopolymer. This study, adding to the knowledge base on geopolymer concretes as an alternative to cement mixtures, explored an experimental approach that investigates the use of ceramic dust (CD) and rice husk ash (RHA) with high SiO content instead of GBFS in the production of geopolymers. For this purpose, instead of GBFS, RHA at proportions of 0, 5%, 10%, and 15% and CD at proportions of 0, 10%, 20%, and 30% were used in the production of geopolymer concrete. In addition, groups were determined with a Taguchi L16 matrix with NaOH (an important material in geopolymer production) at 12, 14, 16, and 18 molality. Varying combinations of flow diameter, density, porosity, and water absorption rate were used, and their performance under high temperatures in terms of compressive strength was evaluated. The use of RHA in geopolymer concretes produced using CD and RHA had a negative effect on the flow and water absorption rates. However, the use of CD had a positive effect, and geopolymer concretes with high density and porosity were obtained. In addition, it was determined that strengths > 70 MPa could only be obtained if 5-20% CD were used at 14-16 molality. The resistance of geopolymer concretes to high temperatures is lower than normal concretes. However, when comparing RHA and CD, it was determined that the use of CD would be more effective on geopolymer materials, and special measures should be taken at temperatures > 450 °C.

ABSTRACT

Cisplatin (CP) treatment has been long associated with the development of acute kidney injury (AKI) through mechanisms involving inflammation and oxidative stress. α-Bisabolol (BIS), a sesquiterpene alcohol isolated from the essential oil of various plants, including chamomile, has garnered popularity lately due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. Therefore, we investigated the nephroprotective effects of BIS in the murine model of CP-induced AKI and the underlying mechanism of action. BALB/c mice were given BIS orally at 25 mg/kg for 7 days. On day 7, they were given a single dose of CP at 20 mg/kg intraperitoneally. BIS treatment continued for 3 more days. The animals were sacrificed at the end of the experiment (day 11). Kidneys, plasma, and urine were collected, and subsequently, various physiological, biochemical, and histological parameters were assessed. BIS has significantly normalized the alterations of water intake, urine volume, relative kidney weight, and the concentrations of urea and creatinine, as well as the creatinine clearance induced by CP treatment. BIS significantly mitigated the effects of CP-induced kidney injury by reducing kidney injury molecule-1, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, adiponectin, and cystatin C. Likewise, the renal concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1ß that were elevated in CP group were significantly reduced in mice treated with BIS and CP. A similar significant reduction was also observed in the CP-induced augmented levels of markers of oxidative stress, as well as the metabolite pteridine. Moreover, BIS significantly reduced the CP-induced renal DNA damage, and markedly lessened the acute tubular necrosis observed in kidney histology. Additionally, BIS significantly reduced the CP-induced increase in the phosphorylated nuclear factor κB (NFκB) in the kidney. These data strongly suggest that BIS exerts a protective action against CP-induced nephrotoxicity by mitigating inflammation and oxidative stress through the inhibition of NFκB activation. No overt adverse effects were noted with BIS treatment. Additional investigations should be done to consider BIS as an efficacious nephroprotective agent against CP.

ABSTRACT

Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES) is a clinicoradiological condition associated with headache, altered mental status, dizziness and white matter vasogenic oedema in parieto-occipital region. It is often associated with hypertension but can also occur in diverse clinical settings like immunosuppression, eclampsia, etc. It is due to failure of autoregulatory mechanism of posterior circulation in response to change in blood pressure. We hereby report a rare case of central variant of PRES secondary to severe hypertension diagnosed with 3T MRI. Objective of reporting this case was to describe the imaging findings of typical and rare atypical patterns of PRES. A 71-year-old male hypertensive patient was referred for brain imaging with history of short period of loss of consciousness, headache and dizziness. MRI brain showed central variant pattern of PRES with preferential involvement of brainstem, thalami and periventricular white matter with sparing of frontal, parietal and occipital lobes. The patient was treated with anti-hypertensive after which patient's symptoms subsided. The patient was followed up conservatively. Atypical variants of PRES should be borne in mind when pontine hyperintensity is encountered in hypertensive patient.
