ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Sarcophagidae is one of the main fly families that is attracted to open wounds, ulcers, lesions, and other injuries for depositing their larvae. The presence of larvae of flies in human tissues makes myiasis. Myiasis on the scalp could be more frightening in comparison with myiasis on the other parts of the body. It is a rare myiasis case that shows the ability of myiasis agents to attack various parts of the body. On the other hand, reporting of myiasis cases by Sarcophagidae larvae is not common due to difficulties in their identification. This study aimed to emphasize the importance of Sarcohagidae larvae in producing myiasis by describing the first case of soft tissue sarcoma infestation and provides a review of human myiasis by larvae of the Sarcophagidae family during 2010-2023 and also a review of wound myiasis cases associated with malignancy during 2000-2023. CASE PRESENTATION: A case of sarcoma cancer myiasis is reported on the scalp of a 43-year-old man who referred to one of Tehran's hospitals for surgical treatment of cancer. Before surgery, insect larvae were observed in the area of ​​sarcoma. The larvae were isolated, examined morphologically, and identified as Sarcophaga spp. CONCLUSIONS: Myiasis has been considered as a neglected disease. Publishing of myiasis cases could be useful to alert health policy-makers about its danger and appearance in the community. It is not usual but can be expected even on the scalp of the human head. Exact daily supervision and dressing of the wound could be recommended to prevent cutaneous myiasis.

ABSTRACT

This research aimed to characterize and compare the properties of nanoliposome (NLP)-loaded Salep mucilage-based bionanocomposite films containing free and encapsulated Allium jesdianum Boiss. essential oil (AEO). The mean size of nanoliposome containing Allium jesdianum Boiss. essential oil (NLP/AEO) was around 125 nm, the zeta potential value was about -35 mV, and the entrapment effectiveness was over 70% based on an evaluation of NLP prepared using the thin-film hydration and ultrasonic approach. Morphological studies further corroborated the findings of the Zetasizer investigation. When NLP/AEO has added to Salep mucilage-based bionanocomposite films, the tensile strength (TS), water solubility (WS), water content (WC), and water vapor permeability (WVP) were found to decrease. In contrast, the contact angle and oxygen permeability (O2P) elongation at break (EAB) increased. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) images indicated that Salep mucilage-based bionanocomposite films added with NLP/AEO had a disordered inner network in the cross-section and a rough structure on the surface compared to the control film. Finally, an increase in antibacterial activity and a decrease in AEO release rate was observed for the Salep mucilage-based bionanocomposite films incorporated with NLP/AEO. Our results indicated that NLP/AEO, as an innovative sustained-release system, had the potential for using the developed antibacterial food packaging base on Salep mucilage for the shelf life extension of perishable food products.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: High quality of care is one of the requirements of nursing which depends on the nursing competency. In this connection, the aim of this research was to determine the problems related to the academic training (nursing' educational program) and clinical practice to achieve competency from the viewpoint of nurses, faculty members, and nursing students. METHODS: the study was an analytical cross-sectional one. The sample consisted of the academic staff, the third and the fourth year nursing students and nurses in practice. The instrument of the study was a two-part researcher-made questionnaire with 22 questions in the theoretical- clinical realm to assess  problems related to the theoretical and clinical teaching in nursing, and 23 questions to assess the clinical functions. The questionnaire was validated in terms of both face and content validity. Its reliability, using Cronbach's Alpha coefficient, was 0.72 in the theoretical-clinical and 0.73 in the clinical realm. Both descriptive and analytical statistics were used to analyze the data, using SPSS software. RESULTS: The results of this study indicated that from the participants' viewpoints, the most important problems in the academic education for nursea to acquire competency were as follows: lack of academic research the clinical period (88.9%), no application of theoretical aspects of the nursing process in practice (85.6%), insufficient knowledgeable and professional educators (81.1%), the use of traditional routine-oriented methods on the wards (75.6%); also insufficient time for performance based on knowledge in relation to  the nurse's workload (86.5%), weakness and usefulness of scientific function encouragement systems in clinic (85.2%), and learnt theoretical subjects not coming into practice in clinical fields after graduation (75.6%). CONCLUSION: Efforts to reduce the gap between the theoretical and practical (clinical function) knowledge in educational and work environment are required to improve the training of qualified nurses.
