ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Pathogenic variants in Gap junction protein beta 1 (GJB1), which encodes Connexin 32, are known to cause X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMTX), the second most common form of CMT. CMTX presents with the following five central nervous systems (CNS) phenotypes: subclinical electrophysiological abnormalities, mild fixed abnormalities on neurological examination and/or imaging, transient CNS dysfunction, cognitive impairment, and persistent CNS manifestations. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old Japanese male showed CNS symptoms, including nystagmus, prominent spastic paraplegia, and mild cerebellar ataxia, accompanied by subclinical peripheral neuropathy. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed hyperintensities in diffusion-weighted images of the white matter, particularly along the pyramidal tract, which had persisted since childhood. Nerve conduction assessment showed a mild decrease in motor conduction velocity, and auditory brainstem responses beyond wave II were absent. Peripheral and central conduction times in somatosensory evoked potentials elicited by stimulation of the median nerve were prolonged. Genetic analysis identified a hemizygous GJB1 variant, NM_000166.6:c.520C > T p.Pro174Ser. CONCLUSIONS: The patient in the case described here, with a GJB1 p.Pro174Ser variant, presented with a unique CNS-dominant phenotype, characterized by spastic paraplegia and persistent extensive leukoencephalopathy, rather than CMTX. Similar phenotypes have also been observed in patients with GJC2 and CLCN2 variants, likely because of the common function of these genes in regulating ion and water balance, which is essential for maintaining white matter function. CMTX should be considered within the spectrum of GJB1-related disorders, which can include patients with predominant CNS symptoms, some of which can potentially be classified as a new type of spastic paraplegia.

ABSTRACT

Benign adult familial myoclonic epilepsy type 1 (BAFME1) is an autosomal dominant, adult-onset neurological disease caused by SAMD12 repeat expansion. In BAFME1, anticipation, such as the earlier onset of tremor and/or seizures in the next generation, was reported. This could be explained by intergenerational repeat instability, leading to larger expansions in successive generations. We report a four-generation BAFME1-affected family with anticipation. Using Nanopore long-read sequencing, detailed information regarding the sizes, configurations, and compositions of the expanded SAMD12 repeats across generations was obtained. Unexpectedly, a grandmother-mother-daughter triad showed similar repeat structures but with slight repeat expansions, despite quite variable age of onset of seizures (range: 52-14 years old), implying a complex relationship between the SAMD12 repeat expansion sequence and anticipation. This study suggests that different factor(s) from repeat expansion could modify the anticipation in BAFME1.

ABSTRACT

Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs) are a heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by progressive spasticity and weakness in the lower extremities. To date, a total of 88 types of SPG are known. To diagnose HSP, multiple technologies, including microarray, direct sequencing, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification, and short-read next-generation sequencing, are often chosen based on the frequency of HSP subtypes. Exome sequencing (ES) is commonly used. We used ES to analyze ten cases of HSP from eight families. We identified pathogenic variants in three cases (from three different families); however, we were unable to determine the cause of the other seven cases using ES. We therefore applied long-read sequencing to the seven undetermined HSP cases (from five families). We detected intragenic deletions within the SPAST gene in four families, and a deletion within PSEN1 in the remaining family. The size of the deletion ranged from 4.7 to 12.5 kb and involved 1-7 exons. All deletions were entirely included in one long read. We retrospectively performed an ES-based copy number variation analysis focusing on pathogenic deletions, but were not able to accurately detect these deletions. This study demonstrated the efficiency of long-read sequencing in detecting intragenic pathogenic deletions in ES-negative HSP patients.

ABSTRACT

Cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) is a late-onset, slow-progressing multisystem neurodegenerative disorder. Biallelic AAGGG repeat expansion in RFC1 has been identified as causative of this disease, and repeat conformation heterogeneity (ACAGG repeat) was also recently implied. To molecularly characterize this disease in Japanese patients with adult-onset ataxia, we accumulated and screened 212 candidate families by an integrated approach consisting of flanking PCR, repeat-primed PCR, Southern blotting and long-read sequencing using Sequel II, GridION or PromethION. We identified 16 patients from 11 families, of whom seven had ACAGG expansions [(ACAGG)exp/(ACAGG)exp] (ACAGG homozygotes), two had ACAGG and AAGGG expansions [(ACAGG)exp/(AAGGG)exp] (ACAGG/AAGGG compound heterozygotes) and seven had AAGGG expansions [(AAGGG)exp/(AAGGG)exp] (AAGGG homozygotes). The overall detection rate was 5.2% (11/212 families including one family having two expansion genotypes). Long-read sequencers revealed the entire sequence of both AAGGG and ACAGG repeat expansions at the nucleotide level of resolution. Clinical assessment and neuropathology results suggested that patients with ACAGG expansions have similar clinical features to previously reported patients with homozygous AAGGG expansions, although motor neuron involvement was more notable in patients with ACAGG expansions (even if one allele was involved). Furthermore, a later age of onset and slower clinical progression were implied in patients with ACAGG/AAGGG compound heterozygous expansions compared with either ACAGG or AAGGG homozygotes in our very limited cohort. Our study clearly shows the occurrence of repeat conformation heterogeneity, with possible different impacts on the affected nervous systems. The difference in disease onset and progression between compound heterozygotes and homozygotes might also be suspected but with very limited certainty due to the small sample number of cases in our study. Studies of additional patients are needed to confirm this.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Prostate cancer (PC) treatment causes sexual dysfunction (SD) and alters fertility, male identity, and intimate relationships with partners. In Japan, little attention has been paid to the importance of providing care for SD associated with PC treatment. This study is aimed at clarifying the care needs of Japanese men regarding SD associated with PC treatment. METHODS: One-to-one semi-structured interviews were conducted with 44 PC patients to identify their care needs. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Four core categories emerged from the analysis. (1) "Need for empathy from medical staff regarding fear of SD": patients had difficulty confiding in others about their sexual problems, and medical staff involvement in their SD issues was lacking. (2) "Need for information that provides an accurate understanding of SD and coping strategies before deciding on treatment": lack of information about SD in daily life and difficulty understanding information from medical institutions, caused men to regret their treatment. (3) "Need for professional care for individuals and couples affected by SD": men faced loss of intimacy because of their partners' unwillingness to understand their SD issues or tolerate non-sexual relationships. (4) "Need for an environment that facilitates interaction among men to resolve SD issues": men felt lonely and wanted to interact with other patients about their SD concerns. CONCLUSION: These findings may help form care strategies tailored to these needs and applicable to other societies with strong traditional gender norms.

ABSTRACT

We report two patients with autosomal dominant neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) harboring the biallelic GGC repeat expansion in NOTCH2NLC to uncover the impact of repeat expansion zygosity on the clinical phenotype. The zygosity of the entire NOTCH2NLC GGC repeat expansion and DNA methylation were comprehensively evaluated using fluorescent amplicon length PCR (AL-PCR), Southern blotting and targeted long-read sequencing, and detailed genetic/epigenetic and clinical features were described. In AL-PCR, we could not recognize the wild-type allele in both patients. Targeted long-read sequencing revealed that one patient harbored a homozygous repeat expansion. The other patient harbored compound heterozygous repeat expansions. The GGC repeats and the nearest CpG island were hypomethylated in all expanded alleles in both patients. Both patients harboring the biallelic GGC repeat expansion showed a typical dementia-dominant NIID phenotype. In conclusion, the biallelic GGC repeat expansion in two typical NIID patients indicated that NOTCH2NLC-related diseases could be completely dominant.

ABSTRACT

Biallelic variants in ZNF142 at 2q35, which encodes zinc-finger protein 142, cause neurodevelopmental disorder with seizures or dystonia. We identified compound heterozygous null variants in ZNF142, NM_001105537.4:c.[1252C>T];[1274-2A>G],p.[Arg418*];[Glu426*], in Malaysian siblings suffering from global developmental delay with epilepsy and dysmorphism. cDNA analysis showed the marked reduction of ZNF142 transcript level through nonsense-mediated mRNA decay by these novel biallelic variants. The affected siblings present with global developmental delay and epilepsy in common, which were previously described, as well as dysmorphism, which was not recognized. It is important to collect patients with ZNF142 abnormality to define its phenotypic spectrum.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has replaced percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) as the treatment of choice for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); however, control of local tumor progression (LTP) remains a challenge in perivascular HCC. The aim of this study was to determine whether PEI added to RFA can reduce the LTP rate in perivascular HCC patients. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 167 patients, with 197 newly diagnosed HCC nodules with peritumoral vessels, who underwent either RFA plus PEI or RFA monotherapy as the first-line treatment between June 2001 and April 2015. Ethanol was injected inside the tumor close to the peritumoral vessels in the combination therapy group. Patients were matched 1:1 according to their propensity scores to reduce selection bias; cumulative LTP was then analyzed using log-rank tests and Cox proportional hazard regression analyses. RESULTS: The two matched groups comprised 62 tumors each. The overall median follow-up period was 34 months (range, 1-140 months). In the RFA plus PEI group, the cumulative LTP rates were 5.7%, 15.5%, and 20.4% at 1, 3, and 5 years, respectively; in the RFA monotherapy group, the rates were 13.2%, 32.0%, and 40.2%, respectively. The rates were significantly lower in the RFA plus PEI group (p = 0.032). Cox proportional hazard regression analysis showed that PEI combination treatment was significantly associated with a reduced risk of local HCC recurrence (hazard ratio, 0.44; 95% confidence interval, 0.19-0.93; p = 0.031). DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: The risk of LTP after RFA for perivascular HCC can be significantly reduced by injecting ethanol close to the peritumoral vessels.

ABSTRACT

A pentanucleotide TTTCA repeat insertion into a polymorphic TTTTA repeat element in SAMD12 causes benign adult familial myoclonic epilepsy. Although the precise determination of the entire SAMD12 repeat sequence is important for molecular diagnosis and research, obtaining this sequence remains challenging when using conventional genomic/genetic methods, and even short-read and long-read next-generation sequencing technologies have been insufficient. Incomplete information regarding expanded repeat sequences may hamper our understanding of the pathogenic roles played by varying numbers of repeat units, genotype-phenotype correlations, and mutational mechanisms. Here, we report a new approach for the precise determination of the entire expanded repeat sequence and present a workflow designed to improve the diagnostic rates in various repeat expansion diseases. We examined 34 clinically diagnosed benign adult familial myoclonic epilepsy patients, from 29 families using repeat-primed PCR, Southern blot, and long-read sequencing with Cas9-mediated enrichment. Two cases with questionable results from repeat-primed PCR and/or Southern blot were confirmed as pathogenic using long-read sequencing with Cas9-mediated enrichment, resulting in the identification of pathogenic SAMD12 repeat expansions in 76% of examined families (22/29). Importantly, long-read sequencing with Cas9-mediated enrichment was able to provide detailed information regarding the sizes, configurations, and compositions of the expanded repeats. The inserted TTTCA repeat size and the proportion of TTTCA sequences among the overall repeat sequences were highly variable, and a novel repeat configuration was identified. A genotype-phenotype correlation study suggested that the insertion of even short (TTTCA)14 repeats contributed to the development of benign adult familial myoclonic epilepsy. However, the sizes of the overall TTTTA and TTTCA repeat units are also likely to be involved in the pathology of benign adult familial myoclonic epilepsy. Seven unsolved SAMD12-negative cases were investigated using whole-genome long-read sequencing, and infrequent, disease-associated, repeat expansions were identified in two cases. The strategic workflow resolved two questionable SAMD12-positive cases and two previously SAMD12-negative cases, increasing the diagnostic yield from 69% (20/29 families) to 83% (24/29 families). This study indicates the significant utility of long-read sequencing technologies to explore the pathogenic contributions made by various repeat units in complex repeat expansions and to improve the overall diagnostic rate.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We investigated the experiences of Japanese men with sexual dysfunction associated with various prostate cancer treatments. METHODS: We included 38 Japanese men who underwent the following initial treatments for prostate cancer: radical prostatectomy (n = 10), external beam radiotherapy (n = 12), brachytherapy (n = 5), and androgen deprivation therapy (n = 11). Semi-structured interviews were conducted regarding sexual dysfunction associated with prostate cancer treatment. Data were analyzed using a content analysis method. To obtain a unique experience for each treatment, we confirmed and organized the treatment method from which the code that constituted each category was derived. The category reliability was calculated based on Scott's formula for the matching rate of the classification by three qualitative researchers. The criterion for good reliability was set at 70%. RESULTS: Japanese men with sexual dysfunction associated with prostate cancer treatments experienced the following: a desire to maintain sexual function and conflict in decision-making concerning the initial treatment for prostate cancer; a loss of values related to sexual dysfunction; an uncertainty regarding the consequences of sexual dysfunction; a sense of calm with fewer adverse effects of sexual dysfunction at the early treatment stage; an effort to accept sexual dysfunction; and management of their changed body at the later treatment stages. The concordance rates for the categories were 70% and 78%. Additionally, there were glimpses of experiences common to all treatments and trends in treatment-specific experiences. CONCLUSION: It is necessary to provide care based on the experience of Japanese men with sexual dysfunction after prostate cancer treatment.

ABSTRACT

Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is commonly diagnosed in cases where multiple hyperechoic nodules are observed in the liver. Pathologically, these nodules associated with PCT are focal fatty deposits. We report here, seven cases of PCT with fatty changes over multiple foci in the liver. Furthermore, the characteristics of ultrasonography (US) findings of 32 previously reported cases are summarized. The US features of these nodules showed a homogenous hyperechoic or hyperechoic rim pattern, partial confluence, and no mass effect in the vascular structures. Because multiple hyperechoic liver nodules occasionally mimic malignancies, and because their diagnosis can be challenging, clinicians should consider checking urine porphyrin levels to rule out PCT when such nodules are observed on US.

Background and Objectives: To investigate the long-term efficacy of rifaximin (RFX) for hyperammonemia and efficacy for refractory ascites in patients with cirrhosis. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 112 patients with liver cirrhosis who were orally administered RFX in this study. Changes in the clinical data of patients were evaluated up to 36 months after RFX administration. The primary endpoint was a change in blood ammonia levels. Secondary endpoints included changes in clinical symptoms, Child−Pugh (CP) score, number of hospitalizations, degree of refractory ascites, adverse events, and the relationship between RFX administration and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Results: An improved rate of overt hepatic encephalopathy (HE) of 82.7% was observed 3 months after RFX administration, which significantly induced a progressive decrease in blood ammonia concentration and an improved CP score up to 36 months. No serious RFX treatment-related adverse events were observed. 36.5% in patients after RFX administration improved refractory ascites. After RFX administration, patients with satisfactory control of hepatic ascites without addition of diuretic had lower renin concentration than those with poor control (p < 0.01). At less than 41 pg/mL renin concentration, the control of refractory ascites was significantly satisfactory (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: RFX reduced blood ammonia concentration and improved hepatic spare ability and the quality of life of patients with long-term HE to up to 36 months. Our study revealed the effects of RFX against refractory ascites, suggesting that renin concentration may be a predictive marker for assessing ascites control.

Many algorithms to detect copy number variations (CNVs) using exome sequencing (ES) data have been reported and evaluated on their sensitivity and specificity, reproducibility, and precision. However, operational optimization of such algorithms for a better performance has not been fully addressed. ES of 1199 samples including 763 patients with different disease profiles was performed. ES data were analyzed to detect CNVs by both the eXome Hidden Markov Model (XHMM) and modified Nord's method. To efficiently detect rare CNVs, we aimed to decrease sequencing biases by analyzing, at the same time, the data of all unrelated samples sequenced in the same flow cell as a batch, and to eliminate sex effects of X-linked CNVs by analyzing female and male sequences separately. We also applied several filtering steps for more efficient CNV selection. The average number of CNVs detected in one sample was <5. This optimization together with targeted CNV analysis by Nord's method identified pathogenic/likely pathogenic CNVs in 34 patients (4.5%, 34/763). In particular, among 142 patients with epilepsy, the current protocol detected clinically relevant CNVs in 19 (13.4%) patients, whereas the previous protocol identified them in only 14 (9.9%) patients. Thus, this batch-based XHMM analysis efficiently selected rare pathogenic CNVs in genetic diseases.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Portal hypertensive gastropathy (PHG) is characterized by noninflammatory edema and vasodilatation of the lamina propria of the mucosal epithelium. In addition, the alterations of intercellular junction proteins and dilatation of the endothelial gaps have been reported. In this study, we examined whether irsogladine maleate (IM), a gastric mucosal protective agent, has the potential to improve PHG by restoration of tight junctions (TJs). METHODS: Twenty-four patients with PHG were registered and randomly assigned into two groups: 12 patients in the IM-administration group and 12 patients in the non-administration group. In the administration group, IM (4 mg/day) was administered orally for 12 weeks. Gastric mucosa with a red color in patients with PHG were obtained endoscopically on the registration day and 12 weeks later. The endoscopic findings were evaluated, an immunohistochemical analysis of claudin-3 (a TJ protein) expression in gastric mucosal tissues by a laser microscope was performed, and claudin-3 expression was quantified by western blot analysis. RESULTS: Irsogladine maleate improved the degree of PHG in 2/12 patients endoscopically, in contrast to none of the 12 patients in the non-administration group. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that expression of claudin-3 increased in 8/12 patients in the IM-administration group and 2/12 patients in the non-administration group (P = 0.036). Western blot analysis revealed that the increase in claudin-3 after 12 weeks was significantly higher in the IM-administration group than in the non-administration group (P = 0.010). CONCLUSIONS: The present pilot study suggested that IM might improve the gastric mucosa in PHG through restoration of TJ-protein claudin-3.

ABSTRACT

Leukoencephalopathies comprise a broad spectrum of disorders, but the genetic background of adult leukoencephalopathies has rarely been assessed. In this study, we analyzed 101 Japanese patients with genetically unresolved adult leukoencephalopathy using whole-exome sequencing and repeat-primed polymerase chain reaction for detecting GGC expansion in NOTCH2NLC. NOTCH2NLC was recently identified as the cause of neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease. We found 12 patients with GGC expansion in NOTCH2NLC as the most frequent cause of adult leukoencephalopathy followed by NOTCH3 variants in our cohort. Furthermore, we found 1 case with de novo GGC expansion, which might explain the underlying pathogenesis of sporadic cases. ANN NEUROL 2019;86:962-968.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Lenvatinib is an oral anticancer drug for patients with unresectable advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We evaluated whether a reduction in tumor stain at 2 weeks after lenvatinib treatment in patients with unresectable HCC is a predictor of early treatment efficacy at 12 weeks. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of the 23 patients who initiated lenvatinib treatment between April 2018 and January 2019, treatment efficacy was measured in 15 patients for more than 12 weeks after treatment. Changes in tumor stain, tumor size on contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT), and serum levels of tumor markers were evaluated 2 weeks after lenvatinib treatment. Therapeutic efficacy was assessed by tumor stain and tumor size by contrast-enhanced CT within the first 12 weeks, according to the modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (mRECIST) guidelines. RESULTS: At 12 weeks, efficacy evaluation of 15 patients revealed that 11 of them experienced partial responses, for a response rate of 73.3%. In the first 2 weeks, 13 patients (86.7%) experienced a decreased tumor stain, including 10 responders (90.9%) and 3 non-responders (75.0%). All patients in the non-responder group had required a lenvatinib dose reduction due to adverse events within 12 weeks. On contrast-enhanced CT, the change rate of tumor stain to HCC at 2 weeks after treatment was <0.8 among 10 responders (90.9%) and 1 non-responder (25.0%; p = 0.033). No significant differences between responders and non-responders were observed with regard to most characteristics at baseline and at 2 weeks after treatment initiation. However, significant differences were observed between groups in the presence or absence of a dose suspension period, the presence or absence of lenvatinib dose reduction from the maximum value during the first 2 weeks, and decreased tumor stain at 2 weeks after treatment initiation. CONCLUSION: Reduction in tumor stain at 2 weeks after lenvatinib treatment may be an early biomarker of efficacy at 12 weeks in patients with unresectable HCC.

BACKGROUND: Several reports have suggested that the bipolar radiofrequency ablation (RFA) system is useful for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We evaluated the efficacy and safety of the bipolar RFA system for HCC treatment in the real-world setting. METHODS: A total of 155 patients with 224 HCC tumors were enrolled. First, we examined the characteristics and outcomes of two RFA systems, monopolar and bipolar. Second, we identified the factors associated with local tumor progression in 72 patients with 104 HCC tumors, who could be followed up for at least 3 months after treatment and had been treated with the bipolar RFA system. RESULTS: Of the baseline characteristics, tumor size and location were associated with the selection of the bipolar RFA system. A sufficient ablative zone margin (≥5 mm) was obtained by bipolar RFA in 81 of 94 (86.1%). The 1- and 2-year local tumor progression rates were 15.6 and 26.3%, respectively. An alpha-fetoprotein-L3 (AFP-L3) ratio >10% (HR: 7.64; 95% CI: 1.7-39.8, p = 0.007) and an insufficient ablative zone margin (<5 mm) (HR: 4.53; 95% CI: 1.02-20.3, p = 0.047) were related to local tumor progression in Cox regression analysis. Although severe adverse events were not observed in most cases, severe hepatic infarction occurred in 1 patient. CONCLUSIONS: The bipolar RFA system is safe and effective for HCC treatment. Tumor localization within the liver is an important factor associated with bipolar RFA. Careful follow-up or reconsideration of treatment is necessary for cases with AFP-L3 ratio >10% or insufficient ablative zone margin (<5 mm), which were associated with local tumor progression.

BACKGROUND: Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) rapidly clear hepatitis C virus (HCV), but the lipid dynamics after DAA treatment remain unknown. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterolemia is the predicting factor for the onset and death of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. Thus, in this study, we examined the frequency and risk of hyper-LDL cholesterolemia in HCV patients who achieved sustained virologic response (SVR) with DAA treatment. METHODS: A total of 121 patients with HCV genotype 1b, who achieved SVR with DAA treatment, were examined for serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein, and triglycerides from the start of treatment until 2 years after SVR (SVR-2y). ΔLDL-C was defined as the change in LDL-C levels from treatment initiation to SVR-2y. Hyper-LDL cholesterolemia was defined as ≥ 140 mg/dL LDL-C at SVR-2y. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to determine whether ΔLDL-C and hyper-LDL cholesterolemia are associated with other factors, including viral kinetics. RESULTS: A total of 63, 3, and 55 patients were administered daclatasvir + asunaprevir, ombitasvir + paritaprevir + ritonavir, and ledipasvir + sofosbuvir, respectively. ΔLDL-C in patients with the IL28B (rs8099917) TG/GG genotype was significantly higher than in those with IL28B TT (27.3 ± 27.0 and 9.6 ± 27.3 mg/dL; P < 0.001). In addition, IL28B TG/GG was an independent risk factor for hyper-LDL cholesterolemia (odds ratio: 8.47; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: An IL28B polymorphism is associated with ΔLDL-C and hyper-LDL cholesterolemia after achieving SVR. Thus, lipid markers should be carefully monitored in patients who achieve SVR with DAA.

ABSTRACT

This article describes the evaluation of an innovative nursing education curriculum project, preventive home visiting practice, which began full implementation in 2015, in terms of students' learning outcomes. For the purpose of learning how elder persons live in community, all the 327 undergraduate nursing students, from freshmen to seniors, provided monthly or bi-monthly visits to home-dwelling elderly persons aged 75 or above in their home over 1 year period, in order to provide support for their independent living and to learn from them. The students' reports submitted at the end of the first academic year were qualitatively analyzed to evaluate what they learned. They acquired multiple perspectives for understanding elder persons, including a variety of individual and environmental aspects of wellness, prevention, and community life. They also acknowledged the importance of team practice through working and collaborating with different grade levels and generations. Overall, the observed learning contents were useful for future nursing education with elder persons and facilitating critical changes in nursing education systems to address the problems of aged society.
