ABSTRACT

The in vitro increase in mitogenic potency of lysosome factors derived from peripheral blood granulocytes of patients with chronic viral myocarditis was observed. These factors inhibited in vitro the Con A-induced suppressor cell activity measured in lymphocytes from healthy persons. The obtained results suggested that these factors may cause disturbances in suppressor cell function in the course of the foregoing disease.

ABSTRACT

Some T-cell functions in vitro have been studied in 16 healthy persons, 8 patients with past myocarditis, without any circulatory after-effects and in 12 patients with chronic viral myocarditis. Decrease of T-suppressor cell activity and enhanced blastic transformation of lymphocytes induced with allogeneic heart antigens have been observed in patients suffering from myocarditis. In six patients with active inflammatory process of the heart muscle, application of levamisole brought about not only clinical and electrocardiographic improvement but also an increase of suppressor cells activity and diminished blastic transformation induced with the allogeneic heart antigens and a rise of the T-lymphocytes percentage.

ABSTRACT

The human spontaneous cell-mediated cytotoxicity (SCMC) and lectin dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (LDCMC) of peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) were studied in patients with different forms of postviral myocarditis. The PBL cytotoxicity was evaluated using 51Cr-labelled CRBC (chicken red blood cells) as targets and results were expressed as a percentage of specific release. The control group was represented by 150 healthy persons of both sexes. No significant age-related differences were found in SCMC and LDCMC activities of PBL from healthy persons. Myocarditis was diagnosed according to clinical criteria. All investigated myocarditis patients suffered from Coxsackie B or Echo-virus infections which were confirmed using virus neutralizing antibody test and haemagglutination inhibition test, respectively. The increase in the investigated cytotoxic cell activity in acute and exacerbated myocarditis and its normalization in chronic one may directly suggest the participation of these cells in heart injury.

ABSTRACT

In the course of adherence granulocytes secrete the granulocyte factor (GF) which modifies lymphocyte functions in vitro. GF augments the interleukins production and diminishes mitogen induced Tac antigen expression in vitro, which may result in diminished IL-2 utilization. Consequently, such cells probably do not absorb IL-2 and do not exert their "inhibitory" potency measured in two step culture. The presented data show a relative deficit in interleukin generation in RA patients and have suggested the role of granulocytes in immunoregulation presumably in the course of diseases accompanied by inflammatory processes.

ABSTRACT

160 workers, aged 19-60 (average 41.5 years), engaged in the production of prefabricated concrete elements and chronically exposed to ambient humidity and temperature fluctuations underwent preventive clinical immunological examinations. Eighty-seven subjects passed, within recent six months, upper respiratory tract infection. Forty-seven per cent of those who passed the respiratory tract infection exhibited enhanced immunological reaction of cellular type, ability of lymphocytes blastic transformation, the degree of lymphocytes immunoadherence inhibition in the presence of antigens, and lymphocytes B value. The changes in the circulatory system may be conditioned by chronic myocarditis.

ABSTRACT

Our study aimed at evaluating an effect of the selected nitrates and beta adrenoceptor blockers on platelet aggregation in patients (pts) with coronary artery disease (CAD). The study included 168 male patients (M), aged between 33 and 72 years (mean age 51 +/- 7). 61 M given isosorbide dinitrate were divided into three groups: in the group I and II an effect of the drug on the platelet aggregation following a single 10 mg (I) and 20 mg (II) dose has been evaluated; in group III an effect of the drug after a two-week treatment has been evaluated. 14 male patients (group IV) were given 5-mononitrate 40 mg daily for two weeks. 85 male patients, treated with propranolol have also been divided into three groups. In group V and group VII an effect of propranolol on platelet aggregation following a single dose of 40 mg and 80 mg has been evaluated respectively. In the group VII an outcome of a two-week propranolol therapy has been assessed. Eleven patients (group VIII) received nadolol in a dose of 40-80 mg daily for two weeks. Platelet aggregation induced by adenosine diphosphate (ADP) in concentration of 1 mM/ml and 5 mM/ml (groups I, II, III, V, VI, VII) and only of 1 microM/ml (groups IV, VIII) was evaluated with Born's method. In patients with CAD only isosorbide dinitrate inhibits platelet aggregation. This effect has been noted following a single dose as well as a two-week treatment. Other drugs (5-mononitrate, propranolol, nadolol) transiently increase platelet aggregation, but became either ineffective after two-week therapy (5-mononitrate, nadolol) or increase (propranolol) platelet aggregation. Tendency to inhibit (sorbonit) or to increase (propranolol) platelet aggregation has been more pronounced with higher concentration of aggregating factor.
