ABSTRACT

Mesothelial cells with reactive hyperplasia are difficult to distinguish from malignant mesothelioma cells based on cell morphology. This study aimed to identify and validate potential biomarkers that distinguish mesothelial cells from mesothelioma cells through machine learning combined with immunohistochemistry. It integrated the gene expression matrix from three Gene Expression Omnibus data sets (GSE2549, GSE12345, and GSE51024) to analyze the differently expressed genes between normal and mesothelioma tissues. Then, three machine learning algorithms, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, support vector machine recursive feature elimination, and random forest were used to screen and obtain four shared candidate markers, including ACADL, EMP2, GPD1L, and HMMR. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the area under the curve for distinguishing normal mesothelial cells from mesothelioma was 0.976, 0.943, 0.962, and 0.956, respectively. The expression and diagnostic performance of these candidate genes were validated in two additional independent data sets (GSE42977 and GSE112154), indicating that the performances of ACADL, GPD1L, and HMMR were consistent between the training and validation data sets. Finally, the optimal candidate marker ACADL was verified by immunohistochemistry assay. Acyl-CoA dehydrogenase long chain (ACADL) was stained strongly in mesothelial cells, especially for reactive hyperplasic mesothelial cells, but was negative in malignant mesothelioma cells. Therefore, ACADL has the potential to be used as a specific marker of reactive hyperplasic mesothelial cells in the differential diagnosis of mesothelioma.

ABSTRACT

SignificanceDespite the identification of neural circuits and circulating hormones in olfactory regulation, the peripheral targets for olfactory modulation remain relatively unexplored. Here we show that dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) is expressed in the cilia and somata of mature olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs), while nasal dopamine (DA) is mainly released from the sympathetic nerve terminals, which innervate the mouse olfactory mucosa (OM). We further demonstrate that DA-DRD2 signaling in the nose plays important roles in regulating olfactory function using genetic and pharmacological approaches. Moreover, the local DA synthesis in mouse OM is reduced during hunger, which contributes to starvation-induced olfactory enhancement. Altogether, we demonstrate that nasal DA and DRD2 receptor can serve as the potential peripheral targets for olfactory modulation.

ABSTRACT

The proliferation and apoptosis of ovarian granulosa cells are important for folliculogenesis. As a transcription factor, SRY-box transcription factor 4 (SOX4) has important roles in regulating cellular proliferation and apoptosis. Nonetheless, the regulatory mechanisms of SOX4 on proliferation and apoptosis of granulosa cells remain elusive. Therefore, a stably overexpressed SOX4 ovarian granulosa cell line KGN was generated by lentivirus encapsulation. We observed that overexpression of SOX4 inhibits apoptosis, promotes proliferation and migration of KGN cells. Comparative analysis of the transcriptome revealed 868 upregulated and 696 downregulated DEGs in LV-SOX4 in comparison with LV-CON KGN cell lines. Afterward, further assessments were performed to explore the possible functions about these DEGs. The data showed their involvement in many biological processes, particularly the Hippo signaling pathway. Moreover, the expression levels of YAP1, WWTR1, WTIP, DLG3, CCN2, and AMOT, which were associated with the Hippo signaling pathway, were further validated by qRT-PCR. In addition, the protein expression levels of YAP1 were markedly elevated, while p-YAP1 were notably reduced after overexpression of SOX4 in KGN cells. Thus, these results suggested that SOX4 regulates apoptosis, proliferation and migration of KGN cells, at least partly, through activation of the Hippo signaling pathway, which might be implicated in mammalian follicle development.

ABSTRACT

Ionic liquids have been widely used to improve the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and are generally believed to passivate defects on the grain boundaries of perovskites. However, few studies have focused on the relevant effects of ionic liquids on intragrain defects in perovskites which have been shown to be critical for the performance of PSCs. In this work, the effect of ionic liquid 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide (HMII) on intragrain defects of formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) perovskite is investigated. Abundant {111}c intragrain planar defects in pure FAPbI3 grains are found to be significantly reduced by the addition of the ionic liquid HMII, shown by using ultra-low-dose selected area electron diffraction. As a result, longer charge carrier lifetimes, higher photoluminescence quantum yield, better charge carrier transport properties, lower Urbach energy, and current-voltage hysteresis are achieved, and the champion power conversion efficiency of 24.09% is demonstrated. These observations suggest that ionic liquids significantly improve device performance resulting from the elimination of {111}c intragrain planar defects.

ABSTRACT

Epidemiological studies suggest that fetal growth restriction (FGR) caused by gestational cholestasis is associated with elevated serum cholic acid (CA). Here, we explore the mechanism by which CA induces FGR. Pregnant mice except controls were orally administered with CA daily from gestational day 13 (GD13) to GD17. Results found that CA exposure decreased fetal weight and crown-rump length, and increased the incidence of FGR in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, CA caused placental glucocorticoid (GC) barrier dysfunction via down-regulating the protein but not the mRNA level of placental 11ß-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-2 (11ß-HSD2). Additionally, CA activated placental GCN2/eIF2α pathway. GCN2iB, an inhibitor of GCN2, significantly inhibited CA-induced down-regulation of 11ß-HSD2 protein. We further found that CA caused excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and oxidative stress in mouse placentas and human trophoblasts. NAC significantly rescued CA-induced placental barrier dysfunction by inhibiting activation of GCN2/eIF2α pathway and subsequent down-regulation of 11ß-HSD2 protein in placental trophoblasts. Importantly, NAC rescued CA-induced FGR in mice. Overall, our results suggest that CA exposure during late pregnancy induces placental GC barrier dysfunction and subsequent FGR may be via ROS-mediated placental GCN2/eIF2α activation. This study provides valuable insight for understanding the mechanism of cholestasis-induced placental dysfunction and subsequent FGR.

ABSTRACT

The long-term physical and mental sequelae of COVID-19 are a growing public health concern, yet there is considerable uncertainty about their prevalence, persistence and predictors. We conducted a comprehensive, up-to-date meta-analysis of survivors' health consequences and sequelae for COVID-19. PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library were searched through Sep 30th, 2021. Observational studies that reported the prevalence of sequelae of COVID-19 were included. Two reviewers independently undertook the data extraction and quality assessment. Of the 36,625 records identified, a total of 151 studies were included involving 1,285,407 participants from thirty-two countries. At least one sequelae symptom occurred in 50.1% (95% CI 45.4-54.8) of COVID-19 survivors for up to 12 months after infection. The most common investigation findings included abnormalities on lung CT (56.9%, 95% CI 46.2-67.3) and abnormal pulmonary function tests (45.6%, 95% CI 36.3-55.0), followed by generalized symptoms, such as fatigue (28.7%, 95% CI 21.0-37.0), psychiatric symptoms (19.7%, 95% CI 16.1-23.6) mainly depression (18.3%, 95% CI 13.3-23.8) and PTSD (17.9%, 95% CI 11.6-25.3), and neurological symptoms (18.7%, 95% CI 16.2-21.4), such as cognitive deficits (19.7%, 95% CI 8.8-33.4) and memory impairment (17.5%, 95% CI 8.1-29.6). Subgroup analysis showed that participants with a higher risk of long-term sequelae were older, mostly male, living in a high-income country, with more severe status at acute infection. Individuals with severe infection suffered more from PTSD, sleep disturbance, cognitive deficits, concentration impairment, and gustatory dysfunction. Survivors with mild infection had high burden of anxiety and memory impairment after recovery. Our findings suggest that after recovery from acute COVID-19, half of survivors still have a high burden of either physical or mental sequelae up to at least 12 months. It is important to provide urgent and appropriate prevention and intervention management to preclude persistent or emerging long-term sequelae and to promote the physical and psychiatric wellbeing of COVID-19 survivors.

ABSTRACT

Takifugu rubripes is a highly valued cultured fish in Asia, while pathogen infections can result in severe diseases and lead to substantial economic losses. Toll-like receptors (TLRs), as pattern recognition receptors, play a crucial role on recognition pathogens and initiation innate immune response. However, the immunological properties of teleost-specific TLR23 remain largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the biological functions of TLR23 (TrTLR23) from T. rubripes, found that TrTLR23 existed in various organs. Following bacterial pathogen challenge, the expression levels of TrTLR23 were significantly increased in immune related organs. TrTLR23 located on the cellular membrane and specifically recognized pathogenic microorganism. Co-immunoprecipitation and antibody blocking analysis revealed that TrTLR23 recruited myeloid differentiation primary response protein (MyD88), thereby mediating the activation of the ERK signaling pathway. Furthermore, in vivo showed that, when TrTLR23 is overexpressed in T. rubripes, bacterial replication in fish tissues is significantly inhibited. Consistently, when TrTLR23 expression in T. rubripes is knocked down, bacterial replication is significantly enhanced. In conclusion, these findings suggested that TrTLR23 played a critical role on mediation TLR23-MyD88-ERK axis against bacterial infection. This study revealed that TLR23 involved in the innate immune mechanism, and provided the foundation for development disease control strategies in teleost.

ABSTRACT

Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology is rapidly advancing in medical research and application. As an emerging biomedical engineering technology, it has garnered significant attention in the clinical research of brain disease diagnosis and treatment, neurological rehabilitation, and mental health. However, BCI also raises several challenges and ethical concerns in clinical research. In this article, the authors investigate and discuss three aspects of BCI in medicine and healthcare: the state of ethical governance, multidimensional ethical challenges pertaining to BCI in clinical research, and suggestive concerns for ethical review. Despite the great potentials of frontier BCI research and development in the field of medical care, the ethical challenges induced by itself, clinical research and complexity of brain function has put forward new special fields for ethics on BCI. To ensure "responsible innovation" BCI research in healthcare and medicine, the creation of an ethical global governance framework and system, along with special guidelines for cutting-edge BCI research in medicine are suggested.

ABSTRACT

The fixation for lateral malleolar fracture in ankle fractures is still controversial. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to compare clinical and radiological outcomes between intramedullary nail (IMN) and plate for lateral malleolar fractures in ankle fractures. The PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from databases inception to June 2023. Data on outcomes were extracted and the methodological quality of the included studies were assessed. A meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software when the data extracted from included studies could be synthesized. Seven RCTs were included. The methodological quality of the included studies was moderate to high. The meta-analysis results showed that the infection rate of the IMN group was significantly lower than that of the plate group (RR = 0.38; 95%CI 0.18-0.82; p = .01). There were no significant differences between the 2 groups in Olerud and Molander Ankle Score (OMAS), union rate, radiological outcomes, nerve injury rate, reoperation rate, loss of reduction, and total complication rate. Our present meta-analysis demonstrated that the IMN might be a better method for the fixation of lateral malleolar fracture in ankle fracture, as the infection rate was significantly lower than a plate.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are regarded as one promising class of precatalysts for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet most of them suffer from poor conductivity and lack of coordinatively unsaturated metal sites, which hinders the fast electrochemical reconstruction and thus a poor OER activity. To address this issue, a unique heterocomposite has been constructed by in situ inserting carbon dots (CDs) into cobalt-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (Co-ZIF) nanosheet arrays (Co-ZIF/CDs/CC) in the presence of carbon cloth (CC) via one-pot coprecipitation for alkaline OER. Benefiting from the synergism between CDs and Co-ZIF subunits such as superior conductivity, strong charge interaction as well as abundant metal sites exposure, the Co-ZIF/CDs/CC exhibits an enhanced promotion effect for OER and contributes to the deep phase transformation from CDs-coupled Co-ZIF to CDs-coupled active CoOOH. As expected, the achieved Co-ZIF/CDs/CC only requires an overpotential of 226 mV to deliver 10 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH, which is lower than that of Co-ZIF/CC and superior to most previously reported CC-supported MOF precatalysts. Moreover, it can also maintain a large current density of 100 mA cm-2 for 24 h with negligible activity decay.

ABSTRACT

Dielectric switches have drawn renewed attention to the study of their many potential applications with the adjustable switch temperatures (Ts ). Herein, a novel antimony-based halide semiconductor, (N,N-diisopropylethylamine) tetrachloroantimonate ((DIPEA)SbCl4 , DIPEA+ =N,N-diisopropylethylamine), with dielectric relaxation behavior and dielectric switches has been successfully synthesized. This compound, consisting of coordinated anion S b C l 4 ∞ - ${{\left[{{\rm S}{\rm b}{\rm C}{\rm l}}_{4}\right]}_{\infty }^{-}}$ chains and isolated DIPEA+ cations, undergoes an isostructural order-disorder phase transition and shows a step-like dielectric anomaly, which can function as a frequency-tuned dielectric switch with highly adjustable switch temperature (Ts ). Variable-temperature single-crystal structure analyses and first-principles molecular dynamics simulations give information about the general mechanisms of molecular dynamics. This work enriches the dielectric switch family and proves that hybrid metal halides are promising candidates for switchable physical or chemical properties.

Complement C1q domain containing protein (C1qDC) is a vital recognition molecule and has an important effect on immunity. The C1qDCs exhibit opsonic activity in fish, while the mechanisms of C1qDCs in activation complement still remain unclear. This study explored immunological characteristics of a C1qDC from Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) (PoC1qDC). PoC1qDC consists of 296 amino acid residues, possessing a collagen domain and a C1q domain. According to our results, PoC1qDC was expressed in 9 diverse tissue samples and showed up-regulation after bacterial challenge. Recombinant PoC1qDC (rPoC1qDC) activated normal serum bactericidal and hemolytic activities by interaction with Japanese flounder IgM, but not enhanced the complement activity of C3-depeleted serum. rPoC1qDC was significantly bound to various bacterial species and agglutination activity against Edwardsiella piscicida and Streptococcus iniae. Furthermore, rPoC1qDC showed direct interaction with peripheral blood leucocytes while enhancing phagocytic and chemotactic activity. When PoC1qDC was overexpressed in Japanese flounder before E. piscicida infection, bacterial replication was significantly inhibited in fish tissues. Consistently, when PoC1qDC expression in Japanese flounder was knocked down, bacterial replication was significantly enhanced. The above findings first suggested the role of PoC1qDC in teleost in mediating complement activation by interaction with IgM, which can positively influence bacterial infection.

Interleukin 8 (IL8) is a CXC chemokine that plays a crucial role on promoting inflammatory response and immune regulation. In teleost, IL8 can induce the migration and activation of immune cells. However, the biological functions of IL8 are still unknown in Takifugu rubripes. In this study, we examined the biological characteristics of TrIL8 in T. rubripes. TrIL8 is composed of 98 residues and contained a chemokine CXC domain. We found that the TrIL8 expression was detected in diverse organs and significantly increased by Vibrio harveyi or Edwardsiella tarda challenge. The recombinant TrIL8 (rTrIL8) exhibited significantly the binding capacities to 8 tested bacteria. In addition, rTrIL8 could bind to peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL), and increased the expression of immune gene, resistance to bacterial infection, respiratory burst, acid phosphatase activity, chemotactic activity, and phagocytic activity of PBL. In the presence of rTrIL8, T. rubripes was enhanced the resistance to V. harveyi infection. These results indicated that TrIL8 is a chemokine and involved in the activation of immune cells against bacterial infection in teleost.

Increasing evidence shows that smoking-obtained nicotine is indicated to improve cognition and mitigate certain symptoms of schizophrenia. In this study, we investigated whether chronic nicotine treatment alleviated MK-801-induced schizophrenia-like symptoms and cognitive impairment in mice. Mice were injected with MK-801 (0.2 mg/kg, i.p.), and the behavioral deficits were assessed using prepulse inhibition (PPI) and T-maze tests. We showed that MK-801 caused cognitive impairment accompanied by increased expression of PDZ and LIM domain 5 (Pdlim5), an adaptor protein that is critically associated with schizophrenia, in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Pretreatment with nicotine (0.2 mg · kg-1 · d-1, s.c., for 2 weeks) significantly ameliorated MK-801-induced schizophrenia-like symptoms and cognitive impairment by reversing the increased Pdlim5 expression levels in the PFC. In addition, pretreatment with nicotine prevented the MK-801-induced decrease in CREB-regulated transcription coactivator 1 (CRTC1), a coactivator of CREB that plays an important role in cognition. Furthermore, MK-801 neither induced schizophrenia-like behaviors nor decreased CRTC1 levels in the PFC of Pdlim5-/- mice. Overexpression of Pdlim5 in the PFC through intra-PFC infusion of an adreno-associated virus AAV-Pdlim5 induced significant schizophrenia-like symptoms and cognitive impairment. In conclusion, chronic nicotine treatment alleviates schizophrenia-induced memory deficits in mice by regulating Pdlim5 and CRTC1 expression in the PFC.

Maternal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure during pregnancy has been related to IUGR. Here, we explored whether paternal LPS exposure before mating impaired fetal development. All male mice except controls were intraperitoneally injected with LPS every other day for a total of five injections. The next day after the last LPS, male mice were mated with untreated female mice. Interestingly, fetal weight and crown-rump length were reduced, while the incidence of IUGR was increased in paternal LPS exposure group. Additionally, paternal LPS exposure leaded to poor placental development through causing cell proliferation inhibition and apoptosis. Additional experiment demonstrated that the inactivation of placental PI3K/AKT pathway might be involved in paternal LPS-induced cell proliferation inhibition and apoptosis of trophoblast cells. Furthermore, the mRNA and protein levels of mesoderm specific transcript (MEST), a maternally imprinted gene with paternal expression, were significantly decreased in mouse placentas from paternal LPS exposure. Further analysis showed that paternal LPS exposure caused the inactivation of placental PI3K/AKT pathway and then cell proliferation inhibition and apoptosis might be via down-regulating placental MEST. Overall, our results provide evidence that paternal LPS exposure causes poor placental development and subsequently IUGR may be via down-regulating MEST/PI3K/AKT pathway, and then inducing cell proliferation inhibition and apoptosis in placentas.

OBJECTIVES: Laparoscopic resection for rectal cancer is currently the predominant treatment modality for rectal tumors, with an ongoing focus on reducing the incidence of postoperative complications. In an effort to decrease the occurrence of anastomotic leakage, two additional steps worth considering are reinforcing the anastomosis with a barbed suture and retaining an anal drain as part of the procedure. The results of the operation were analyzed by comparing them to cases where the anastomosis was performed with a stapler alone. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent laparoscopic radical rectal cancer surgery between July 2020 and March 2023. The patients were categorized into three cohorts based on the postoperative management following instrumented anastomosis: cohort A, the instrumented anastomosis alone group; cohort B, the reinforced suture group; and cohort C, the reinforced suture and indwelling transanal drainage tube group. Propensity score matching was performed twice in a 1:1 ratio, comparing cohort B to cohort A and cohort C to cohort B. The objective was to compare the benefits and drawbacks among the different groups in terms of operative time, postoperative outcomes and operative costs. RESULTS: 529 patients with laparoscopic resection for rectal cancer were eligible for inclusion. the instrumented anastomosis alone group, reinforced suture group and the reinforced suture and indwelling transanal drainage tube group were performed in 205 patients, 198 patients and 126 patients, respectively. Cohort A and Cohort B differed in three variables after PSM: total operative time (p = 0.018), postoperative hospital stay (p < 0.001) and incidence of anastomotic leakage (p = 0.038). Cohort B had a longer total operative time, shorter postoperative hospital stay and a lower incidence of anastomotic leakage. Similarly, cohort C had less postoperative drainage (P = 0.01) and a longer postoperative hospital stay (P = 0.003) when cohort B and cohort C were matched for propensity scores. There was no significant difference in the cost of surgery between the three cohorts. CONCLUSIONS: The incorporation of barbed suture reinforcement significantly reduces the occurrence of postoperative anastomotic leakage in rectal cancer surgeries. On the other hand, although trans-anal drainage was used as an additional measure to the reinforcement suture of the anastomosis, the utilization of trans-anal drainage tubes does not demonstrate a significant improvement in surgical outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the effectiveness of using deep learning network combined Vision Transformer (ViT) and Transformer to identify patients with depressive disorder on the basis of their sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Methods: The sleep EEG signals of 28 patients with depressive disorder and 37 normal controls were preprocessed. Then, the signals were converted into image format and the feature information on frequency domain and spatial domain was retained. After that, the images were transmitted to the ViT-Transformer coding network for deep learning of the EEG signal characteristics of the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep in patients with depressive disorder and those in normal controls, respectively, and to identify patients with depressive disorder. Results: Based on the ViT-Transformer network, after examining different EEG frequencies, we found that the combination of delta, theta, and beta waves produced better results in identifying depressive disorder. Among the different EEG frequencies, EEG signal features of delta-theta-beta combination waves in REM sleep achieved 92.8% accuracy and 93.8% precision for identifying depression, with the recall rate of patients with depression being 84.7%, and the F0.5 value being 0.917±0.074. When using the delta-theta-beta combination EEG signal features in NREM sleep to identify depressive disorder, the accuracy was 91.7%, the precision was 90.8%, the recall rate was 85.2%, and the F0.5 value was 0.914±0.062. In addition, through visualization of the sleep EEG of different sleep stages for the whole night, it was found that classification errors usually occurred during transition to a different sleep stage. Conclusion: Using the deep learning ViT-Transformer network, we found that the EEG signal features in REM sleep based on delta-theta-beta combination waves showed better effect in identifying depressive disorder.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Adult sporadic Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is a rare but highly aggressive subtype of lymphoma which lacks its own unique prognostic model. Systemic inflammatory biomarkers have been confirmed as prognostic markers in several types of malignancy. Our objective was to explore the predictive value of pretreatment inflammatory biomarkers and establish a novel, clinically applicable prognostic index for adult patients with sporadic BL. METHODS: We surveyed retrospectively 336 adult patients with newly diagnosed sporadic BL at 8 Chinese medical centers and divided into training cohort (n = 229) and validation cohort (n = 107). The pretreatment inflammatory biomarkers were calculated for optimal cut-off value. The association between serum biomarkers and overall survival (OS) was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional models. The risk stratification was defined based on normal LDH level, Ann Arbor stage of I and completely resected abdominal lesion or single extra-abdominal mass < 10 cm. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that platelets< 254 × 109/L, albumin< 40 g/L, lactate dehydrogenase≥334 U/L independently predicted unfavorable OS. We used these data as the basis for the prognostic index, in which patients were stratified into Group 1 (no or one risk factor), Group 2 (two risk factors), or Group 3 (three risk factors), which were associated with 5-year OS rates of 88.1, 72.4, and 45%, respectively. In the subgroup analysis for high-risk patients, our prognostic model results showed that high-risk patients with no more than one adverse factor presented a 5-year survival rate of 85.9%, but patients with three adverse factors had a 5-year survival rate of 43.0%. Harrell's concordance index (C-index) of the risk group score was 0.768. Therefore, the new prognostic model could be used to develop risk-adapted treatment approaches for adult sporadic BL.

ABSTRACT

The fabrication of type II heterojunctions is an efficient strategy to facilitate charge separation in photocatalysis. Here, mixed dimensional 0D/2D van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures (graphene quantum dots (GQDs)-MoS2) for generating hydrogen from water splitting are investigated based on density functional theory (DFT). The electronic and photocatalytic properties of three heterostructures, namely, C6H6-MoS2, C24H12-MoS2 and C32H14-MoS2 are estimated by analyzing the density of states, charge density difference, work function, Bader charge, absorption spectra and band alignment. The results indicated that the built-in electric fields from GQDs to MoS2 boost charge separation. Meanwhile, all the GQDs-MoS2 exhibit strong absorption in the visible light region. Surprisingly, the transition of heterojunctions from type I to type II is realized by tuning the size of GQDs. In particular, C32H14-MoS2 with enhanced visible-light absorption and an appropriate band edge position, as a type II heterostructure, may be a promising photocatalyst for generating hydrogen from water splitting. Thus, in this work a novel type II 0D/2D nanocomposite as a photocatalyst is constructed that provides a strategy to regulate the type of heterostructure from the perspective of theoretical calculation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: High-quality mental health services can improve outcomes for people with mental health problems and abate the burden of mental disorders. We sought to identify the challenges the country's mental health system currently faces and the human resource situation related to psychological services and to provide recommendations on how the mental health workforce situation could be addressed in China. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional survey design. A web-based questionnaire approach and a convenience sampling method were adopted. It was carried out from September 2020 to January 2021 in China, and we finally included 3824 participants in the analysis. Descriptive statistical analysis of the characteristics of the study sample was performed. The risk factors for competence in psychological counseling/psychotherapy were assessed using multiple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: Workforce related to psychotherapy is scarce in China, especially in Western China and community mental health sectors. Psychiatrists (39.1%) and nurses (38.9%) were the main service providers of psychotherapy in psychiatric hospitals, and clinical psychologists (6.9%) and counsellors (5.0%) were seriously scarce in mental health care sectors. A total of 74.2% of respondents had no systematic psychological training, and 68.4 and 69.2% of them had no self-experience and professional supervision, respectively. Compared with clinical psychologists and counselors, psychiatrists and nurses had less training. Systematic psychological training (ß = - 0.88), self-experience (ß = - 0.59) and professional supervision (ß = - 1.26) significantly influenced psychotherapy capacity (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Sustained effort will be required to provide a high-quality, equitably distributed psychotherapy workforce in China, despite challenges for community mental health sectors and western China being likely to continue for some time. Because mental illness is implicated in so many burgeoning social ills, addressing this shortfall could have wide-ranging benefits.
