ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a French version of the Barriers to Access to Care Evaluation (BACE-3) scale that is tailored to the socio-cultural and language setting of the study. METHODS: The translation of the BACE-3 into French and its validation were the two key components of this psychometric investigation. An online survey was created and circulated to French-speaking participants who volunteered to participate in the study. RESULTS: For all translated questions, the reliability analysis key results (Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's Omega) were both>0.95, which is an excellent reliability value. The BACE-3 items were shown to be positively related to one another, implying excellent validity. Results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses showed that all stigma-related items were loaded under the same factor. CONCLUSIONS: The BACE-3 has been validated in French, and its psychometric qualities have been thoroughly evaluated and found to be excellent.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence and outcome of mixed connective tissue disease-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (MCTD-PAH) has not been well understood. Our aim was to review the current knowledge on the prevalence, severity, and mortality of MCTD-PAH. We also aimed to examine the prevalence trend of MCTD-PAH over the years. METHODS: PubMed/Medline, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science electronic databases were searched for the published randomised controlled clinical trials (RCTs) and observational/original studies on PAH in patients with MCTD from January 1972 to December 2020. RESULTS: The results were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis based on DerSimonian and Laird method. A total of 983 patients from eight studies were included in the meta-analysis (K=8, n=983). Pooled prevalence of PAH in MCTD patients was 12.53% [95% CI 8.30-18.48%] with significant level statistical heterogeneity (tau2=0.30, tau=0.55, i2 83.3%, H=2.13 Q(df,7)=31.90, p=0.001). There was no association between PAH and female gender or age. The percentage of deaths in MCTD patients due to PAH varied and reached up to 81.8%. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis investigating the prevalence of PAH in patients with MCTD and it revealed an overall prevalence of PAH in patients with MCTD of 12.53%. Our results showed trends of reduced prevalence of MCTD-PAH over last four decade, reconfirmed the lower prevalence rate in recent studies, but revealed an increased mortality rate. We also determined the low impact of the age, gender, and interstitial lung disease on MCTD-PAH.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Adolescents are at high risk of incident psychopathology. Fleeting psychotic experiences (PEs) that emerge in young people in response to stress may be warning signs that are missed by research that fails to study stressed populations, such as late high school and college/university students. Our aim in this systematic review was to conduct a meta-analysis that estimates prevalence rates of PEs in students, and to assess whether these rates differ by gender, age, culture, and COVID-19 exposure. METHOD: We searched nine electronic databases, from their inception until January 31, 2022 for relevant studies. We pooled the estimates using the DerSimonian-Laird technique and random-effects meta-analysis. Our main outcome was the prevalence of self-reported PEs in high school and college/university students. We subsequently analyzed our data by age, gender, population, country, culture, evaluation tool, and COVID-19 exposure. RESULTS: Out of 486 studies retrieved, a total of 59 independent studies met inclusion criteria reporting 210' 024 students from 21 different countries. Nearly one in four students (23.31%; 95% CI 18.41%-29.05%), reported having experienced PEs (heterogeneity [Q = 22,698.23 (62), p = 0.001] τ2  = 1.4418 [1.0415-2.1391], τ = 1.2007 [1.0205-1.4626], I2  = 99.7%, H = 19.13 [18.59-19.69]). The 95% prediction intervals were 04.01%-68.85%. Subgroup analyses showed that the pooled prevalence differed significantly by population, culture, and COVID-19 exposure. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis revealed high prevalence rates of self-reported PEs among teen and young adult students, which may have significance for mental health screening in school settings. An important realization is that PEs may have very different mental health meaning in different cultures.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the relationships between eating habits and sleep quality among university students. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, university students completed a self-report questionnaire to assess eating habits and meal timing. We assessed subjective sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire and examined the associations between eating habits and overall sleep quality and its components. RESULTS: Four hundred ninety-eight students participated in the study. Students who used to skip breakfast, ate late-night snacks, and replaced meals with snacks were at 1.20 times, 1.24 times, and 1.25 times higher likelihood of having poor overall sleep quality, respectively. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that skipping breakfast (r = - 0.111, P = 0.007), late-night snacks (r = - 0.109, P = 0.007), replacing meals with snacks (r = - 0.126, P = 0.002), and irregular mealtimes (r = - 0.094, P = 0.018) were the best correlates with poor sleep quality. After adjustment to demographic variables, replacing meals with snacks followed by skipping breakfast were the best independent associations with poor sleep quality by the PSQI. CONCLUSIONS: Eating habits and meal timing were significantly associated with sleep quality. We speculate that healthy eating habits may lead to improved sleep quality and sleep components among university students.

ABSTRACT

Camel milk consists of an essential macro/micronutrient for human nutrition in the arid and urban regions. This review study aimed to use meta-analysis statistical techniques for assessment and correction of publication bias, exploration of heterogeneity between studies, and detailed assessment of the effect of a comprehensive set of moderators including breed, season, country, year of publication, and the interaction between composition elements. This could provide a single synthesis of the camel milk composition to warrant strong generalizability of results, examine variability between available studies, and analyze differences in camel milk composition among different exposures. Such a finding will aid future researchers and health professionals in acquiring a more precise understanding of camel milk composition and drawing more clinical implications. Six searching databases and bibliographic were used including PubMed/MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Springer, EBSCOhost, Scopus, and Web of Science from January 1980 to December 2021. The DerSimonian-Laird estimator was used to create the current random-effects meta-analysis. This systematic review and meta-analysis included a total of 7298 camel milk samples from 23 countries. This review comprises 79 studies published in the English language on or after 1980, including a subgroup of 117 analyses consisting of seasons, sub-breeds, and countries. The contents of macro/micronutrients in camel milk were identified as follows: protein, 3.17%; fat, 3.47%; lactose, 4.28%; ash, 0.78%; and total solids, 11.31%; calcium, 112.93 mg/100 g; iron, 0.45 mg/100 g; potassium, 116.13 mg/100 g; magnesium, 9.65 mg/100 g; sodium, 53.10 mg/100 g; zinc, 1.68 mg/100 g; vitamin C, 5.38 mg/100 g; vitamin A, 0.36 mg/100 g; vitamin B1 ,0.05 mg/100 g; vitamin B2 , 0.13 mg/100 g; vitamin B3 , 0.51 mg/100 g; vitamin B6 , 0.09 mg/100 g; and vitamin B12 , 0.0039 mg/100 g. Our meta-regression analysis found that fat and total solids were statistically significant moderators of protein; moreover, total solids content is a statistically significant moderator of fat. Discrepancies observed in camel milk profiles are dependent upon several factors, including number of included studies, number of samples, different analytical techniques, feeding patterns, camel's breeds, geographical locations, and seasonal variations.

AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Ramadan diurnal intermittent fasting (RDIF; 29-30 days) on cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRF) in healthy adults, and examine the effect of various cofactors on the outcomes using sub-group meta-regression. DATA SYNTHESIS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to measure the effect sizes of changes in CMRF in healthy adult Muslims observing RDIF. Ten scientific databases (EBSCOhost, CINAHL, Cochrane, EMBASE, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Google Scholar, ProQuest Medical, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science) were searched from the date of inception (1950) to the end of November 2020. The CMRF searched and analyzed were total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and heart rate (HR). We identified 91 studies (4431 adults aged 18-85 years) conducted between 1982 and 2020 in 23 countries distributed over four continents. RDIF-induced effect sizes for CMRF were: TC (no. of studies K = 77, number of subjects N = 3705, Hedge's g = -0.092, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.168, 0.016); TG (K = 74, N = 3591, Hedge's g = -0.127, 95% CI: -0.203, 0.051); HDL-C (K = 68, N = 3528, Hedge's g = 0.138, 95% CI: 0.051, 0.224); LDL-C (K = 65, N = 3354, Hedge's g = -0.115, 95% CI: -0.197, -0.034); VLDL-C (K = 13, N = 648, Hedge's g = -0.252, 95% CI: -0.431, 0.073), DBP (K = 32, N = 1716, Hedge's g = -0.255, 95% CI: -0.363, 0.147), and HR (K = 12, N = 674, Hedge's g = -0.082, 95% CI: -0.300, 0.136). Meta-regression revealed that the age of fasting people was a significant moderator of changes in both HDL-C (P = 0.02) and VLDL-C (P = 0.01). Male sex was the only significant moderator of changes in LDL-C (P = 0.055). Fasting time duration was the only significant moderator of HDL-C (P = 0.001) at the end of Ramadan. CONCLUSIONS: RDIF positively impacts CMRF, which may confer short-term transient protection against cardiovascular disease among healthy people.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Evidence indicates that most college students face reduced sleep quality due to unhealthy dietary habits and hectic daily schedules. While the relationship between sleep quality and general health has been the subject of intensive research, little is known about the association between sleep and its relation with the inflammatory potential of the diet until recently. This study aimed to investigate the association between Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index (E-DII®) scores and sleep quality in a group of students from the University of Sharjah (UOS). METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was followed, and convenience sampling was used. Participants were assessed for sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), E-DII scores were derived from a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and physical activity level was measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Chi-square tests and two-sample t tests were used to find an association between E-DII scores and sleep quality. RESULTS: A total of 379 college students were included in the study of whom 64 % were female and 81% were between 18 and 21 years of age. Two-thirds of participants experienced poor sleep quality. Although results were trending in the hypothesized direction, no significant association was found between E-DII scores and sleep quality. Among the individual components of sleep quality, a direct significant association was found between E-DII scores and day dysfunction (P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that a pro-inflammatory diet maybe related to increased day dysfunction among UOS students. Consuming a more anti-inflammatory diet may reduce daytime dysfunction. Further prospective and controlled studies are required to confirm this association, and to explore other attributes and their sequelae on sleep quality.

ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: The musculoskeletal (MSK) manifestations in the kidney transplant recipient (KTxR) could lead to decreased quality of life and increased morbidity and mortality. However, the prevalence of these MSK manifestations is still not well-recognized. This review aimed to investigate the prevalence and outcomes of MSK manifestations in KTxR in the last two decades. Materials and Methods: Research was performed in EBSCO, EMBASE, CINAHL, PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane, Google Scholar, PsycINFO, Scopus, Science Direct, and Web of Science electronic databases were searched during the years 2000-2020. Results: The PRISMA flow diagram revealed the search procedure and that 502 articles were retrieved from the initial search and a total of 26 articles were included for the final report in this review. Twelve studies reported bone loss, seven studies reported a bone pain syndrome (BPS) or cyclosporine-induced pain syndrome (CIPS), and seven studies reported hyperuricemia (HU) and gout. The prevalence of MSK manifestations in this review reported as follow: BPS/CIPS ranged from 0.82% to 20.7%, while bone loss ranged from 14% to 88%, and the prevalence of gout reported in three studies as 7.6%, 8.0%, and 22.37%, while HU ranged from 38% to 44.2%. Conclusions: The post-transplantation period is associated with profound MSK abnormalities of mineral metabolism and bone loss mainly caused by corticosteroid therapy, which confer an increased fracture risk. Cyclosporine (CyA) and tacrolimus were responsible for CIPS, while HU or gout was attributable to CyA. Late diagnosis or treatment of post-transplant bone disease is associated with lower quality of life among recipients.

Background and objective: Sleeping difficulties affect the overall health, nutrition, and wellbeing. The Mediterranean diet has proven effective in improving the quality of life and overall health of people of all ages. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) is linked to reduced insomnia in Arabic-speaking female adults in Jordan. Materials and Methods: A self-administered, cross-sectional survey was used to detect the relationship between MD and sleep quality in Arabic-speaking female adults. Data were collected from 917 Arabic-speaking female participants of 14 Arab nationalities in Jordan between March and May 2021 via social media. All participants answered the whole questionnaire, including questions on sociodemographic aspects, Mediterranean diet adherence, sleeping habits measured with the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), and lifestyle components such as smoking and dietary patterns. Results: The mean age of the 917 Arabic-speaking female participants was 36 ± 10 years. Most participants were unemployed (85%) single females (64%) with an undergraduate degree (74%). Most of them (86%) were non-smokers. More than half of the participants were Jordanians (57%). The BMI was normal for 52% of the participants, whereas 26% of them were overweight, and 12% were obese. One-way ANCOVA showed a statistically significant difference between MD adherence score categories and AIS, F (2, 914) = 3.36, p = 0.015. Among the MD adherence score categories, we found that between groups, MD scores above or equal to 10 were associated with a statistically significant difference in AIS. Cohen's value was calculated for the three MD score categories and indicated a 'small' effect size association between all adherence scores of the MD categories and AIS. Conclusions: In conclusion, our findings provide preliminary evidence that participants' adherence to the MD was significantly associated with better sleep and reduced insomnia symptoms, highlighting the need for further research.

Studies on the impact of Ramadan diurnal intermittent fasting (RDIF) on the metabolic syndrome (MetS) components among healthy Muslims observing Ramadan month have yielded contradictory results. This comprehensive meta-analysis aimed to obtain a more stable estimate of the effect size of fasting during Ramadan on the MetS components, examine variability among studies, assess the generalisability of reported results and perform subgroup analyses for associated factors. We searched the CINAHL, Cochrane, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, ProQuest Medical, PubMed/MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Scopus and Web of Science databases for relevant studies published from 1950 to March 2019. The MetS components analysed were: waist circumference (WC), systolic blood pressure (SBP), fasting plasma/serum glucose (FG), TAG, and HDL-cholesterol. We identified eighty-five studies (4326 participants in total) that were conducted in twenty-three countries between 1982 and 2019. RDIF-induced effect sizes for the MetS components were: small reductions in WC (no. of studies K = 24, N 1557, Hedges' g = -0·312, 95 % CI -0·387, -0·236), SBP (K = 22, N 1172, Hedges' g = -0·239, 95 % CI -0·372, -0·106), FG (K = 51, N 2318, Hedges' g = -0·101, 95 % CI -0·260, 0·004) and TAG (K = 63, N 2862, Hedges' g = -0·088, 95 % CI -0·171, -0·004) and a small increase in HDL-cholesterol (K = 57, N 2771, Hedges' g = 0·150, 95 % CI 0·064, 0·236). We concluded that among healthy people, RDIF shows small improvement in the five MetS components: WC, SBP, TAG, FG and HDL.

PURPOSE: Studies on the effect of Ramadan diurnal intermittent fasting (RDIF) on body weight have yielded conflicting results. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the effect size of body weight changes in healthy, non-athletic Muslims practicing Ramadan fasting, and to assess the effect of covariates such as age, sex, fasting time duration, season, and country, using subgroup analysis, and meta-regression. Covariate adjustments were performed to explain the variability of weight change in response to Ramadan fasting. METHODS: CINAHL, Cochrane, EBSCOhost, EMBASE, Google Scholar, ProQuest Medical, PubMed/MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched from date of inception in 1950 to the end of August 2019. RESULTS: Eighty-five studies, conducted in 25 countries during 1982-2019, were identified. RDIF yielded a significant, but small reduction in body weight (K = 85, number of subjects, N = 4176 (aged 16-80 years), Hedges' g =- 0.360, 95% confidence interval (CI) - 0.405 to - 0.315, I2 = 45.6%), this effect size translates into difference in means of - 1.022 kg (95% CI - 1.164 kg to - 0.880 kg). Regression analysis for moderator covariates revealed that fasting time (min/day) is a significant (P < 0.05) moderator for weight change at the end of Ramadan, while age and sex are not. Variable effects for the season and country were found. CONCLUSION: RDIF may confer a significant small reduction in body weight in non-athletic healthy people aged 16 years and above, directly associated with fasting time and variably correlated with the season, and country.

PURPOSE: The current meta-analysis aimed to obtain a more stable estimate of the effect size of Ramadan diurnal intermittent fasting (RDF) on sleep duration and daytime sleepiness. METHODS: Databases (Scopus, ScienceDirect, ProQuest Medical, PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Cochrane, CINAHL, and Google Scholar) were searched from database inception to the end of June 2019. The sleep quality measures analyzed were excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) measured by the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) and total sleep time (TST). Subgroup analyses for age, sex, and levels of physical activity were conducted. RESULTS: We identified 24 studies (involving 646 participants, median age 23.7 years, 73% men) conducted in 12 countries from 2001 to 2019. The results revealed that TST decreased from 7.2 h per night [95% confidence interval (CI) 6.7-7.8] before Ramadan to 6.4 h (95% CI 5.3-7.5) during Ramadan, while the ESS score increased slightly from 6.1 (95% CI 4.5-7.7) before Ramadan to 7.0 (95% CI 5.2-8.8) during Ramadan. Effect sizes on sleep quality measures during RDF demonstrated a moderate reduction in TST (number of studies, K = 22; number of subjects, N = 571, Hedges' g value of -0.43, 95% CI - 0.64 to -0.22, Q = 90, τ2 = 0.15, I2 = 78%, P < 0.001), while ESS score showed negligible effect on EDS (K = 9, N = 362, Hedges' g value of -0.06, 95% CI -0.43 to 0.28, Q = 21, τ2 = 0.13, I2 = 76%, P value = 0.001). CONCLUSION: During the month of Ramadan, there is approximately a 1 hour reduction in TST and nearly a 1 point increase in the ESS score.

ABSTRACT

We examined the outpatient prescription pattern of psychotropic drugs used for the treatment of five major psychiatric diseases in Bahrain. Setting outpatient department of the main psychiatric hospital in Bahrain. Methods This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study in which we targeted randomly selected prescriptions (n = 992, 56.1% males, 43.9% females) from 1st of January until 31st of December, 2017. Main outcome measure the types of outpatient psychotropic drugs prescribed by the physicians. Results The pharmacotherapy of schizophrenia consisted of atypical anti-psychotics (92.8%), or typical anti-psychotics (17.8%). The anti-depressants used were: Selective-serotonin reuptake inhibiters (SSRIs) (41.6%), Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibiters (SNRIs) (34.5%), tricyclic anti-depressants (TCAs) (12.8%), and atypical anti-depressants (10.6%). Combination anti-depressants was employed in (12.4%) of cases. The pharmacotherapy for anxiety disorders was composed of benzodiazepines (59.5%), atypical anti-psychotics (45.2%), SSRIs (40.5%), SNRIs (28.6%), TCAs (14.3%), and anti-convulsants (16.7%) and atypical anti-psychotics (7.1). The medications prescribed for bipolar disorder were atypical anti-psychotics (78.6%), anti-convulsants (66.5%), benzodiazepines (27.7%), typical anti-psychotics (8.9%) and lithium (6.7%). Schizoaffective disorder patients received atypical anti-psychotics (97.3%), anti-convulsants (47.8%), benzodiazepines (27.4%), SNRIs (25.7%), SSRIs (15%), typical anti-psychotics (10.6%), atypical anti-depressants (10.6%) and TCAs (6.2%). A combination of antipsychotics and anti-depressants was employed in 33.6% and 4.7% of all subjects regardless of the diagnosis, respectively. Conclusions With a few exceptions, the pharmacotherapy of psychiatric diseases in Bahrain was in line with the latest recommendations. However, psychotropic polypharmacy was observed and calls for immediate attention.

BACKGROUND: Cultural factors influence attitudes toward death, and gender disparities are evident. Prior studies show that medical students have limited knowledge about death and are uncomfortable with it. Moreover, there is limited research that has examined factors that influence medical students' knowledge and attitudes toward death. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were to compare cultural and gender differences in relation to knowledge and attitudes toward loss and grief and to screen for complicated grief among medical students at the Arabian Gulf University and the University of Toronto. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was disseminated to medical students at both universities in 2022. The variables in the survey included four parts: demographic characteristics of the participants, religious observance, history of encountering loss of a loved one, grief following loss, attitude toward death, and learning about how to deal with grief and death during medical school. The brief grief questionnaire and the death attitude profile-revised scales were used. RESULTS: The study sample consisted of 168 medical students, with 74.1% being female. Complicated grief scores were higher among Arabian Gulf University students (3.87 ± 2.39) than among University of Toronto students (2.00 ± 1.93) and were higher for participants with a higher degree of religious observance in both schools (p < 0.05). Death avoidance (p = 0.003), approach acceptance (p < 0.001), and escape acceptance (p = 0.038) domains were significantly higher among Arabian Gulf University students than among University of Toronto students. Almost three-quarters of University of Toronto students reported not being taught about grief, compared to 54% of Arabian Gulf University students. CONCLUSIONS: Arabian Gulf University medical students scored higher on complicated grief, most likely due to cultural and religious factors. Females at both institutions as well as those who indicated a higher level of religious observance reported higher scores of complicated grief. The study highlights how cultural and religious beliefs influence medical students' attitudes toward death and bereavement. It provides valuable insight into the knowledge and attitudes of medical students toward loss.

ABSTRACT

Background: Multiple sclerosis, a chronic inflammatory disease in young and middle-aged adults, is one of the leading causes of non-traumatic disability in adults. Diet is known to have an important role in the modulating inflammatory processes and influencing molecular pathways. Purpose: This study aims to examine the association of the inflammatory capacity of diet measured by DII with MS in Jordan. Methods: This prevalent case-control study included participants of both sexes, aged between 20 and 60 years. The cases (n = 541) had a confirmed diagnosis of prevalent Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in the previous 3 years, and controls (n = 607) were apparently healthy individuals matched on sex and age (42 ± 4 years). A validated Arabic food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was utilized to obtain estimated dietary intake. Dietary data from the FFQ were analyzed using ESHA's Food Processor® nutrition analysis software, and the results were used to calculate the DII scores. Logistic regression analyses, controlling for covariates such as age, sex, body mass index, and smoking status, were used to measure the association between DII score and MS outcomes. Results: Cases represent a mixed sample of MS phenotypes and controls were comparable on age and sex. However, controls tended to be taller, lighter, had a lower BMI, and had a lower smoking rate. After controlling for age, BMI, sex, and smoking status, there was a consistent increase in MS risk according to DII score, with a 10-fold increase in odds in quartile 4 vs. quartile 1 [ORquartile 4vs1 = 10.17 (95% CI: 6.88; 15.04)]. For each point increase in DII score, there was nearly a doubling of odds [OR1 = 1.75 (95% CI: 1.59; 1.92)]. Individual nutrients and food values aligned according to their contribution to the DII score calculations. Conclusion: The findings of this study, obtained in MS patients with varied illness duration over the previous 3 years, are consistent with an association between the overall inflammatory potential of diet and MS odds. Our findings among MS participants showed a significantly more pro-inflammatory DII scores than age- and sex-matched controls. Our results also suggest that MS group had a diet rich in pro-inflammatory foods and nutrients.

ABSTRACT

The magnitude of post-COVID-19 syndrome was not thoroughly investigated. This study evaluated the quality of life and persistence of fatigue and physical symptoms of individuals post-COVID-19 compared with noninfected controls. The study included 965 participants; 400 had previous COVID-19 disease and 565 controls without COVID-19. The questionnaire collected data on comorbidities, COVID-19 vaccination, general health questions, and physical symptoms, in addition to validated measures of quality of life (SF-36 scale), fatigue (fatigue severity scale, FSS), and dyspnea grade. COVID-19 participants complained more frequently of weakness, muscle pain, respiratory symptoms, voice disorders, imbalance, taste and smell loss, and menstrual problems compared to the controls. Joint symptoms, tingling, numbness, hypo/hypertension, sexual dysfunction, headache, bowel, urinary, cardiac, and visual symptoms did not differ between groups. Dyspnea grade II-IV did not differ significantly between groups (p = 0.116). COVID-19 patients scored lower on the SF-36 domains of role physical (p = 0.045), vitality (p < 0.001), reported health changes (p < 0.001), and mental-components summary (p = 0.014). FSS scores were significantly higher in COVID-19 participants (3 (1.8-4.3) vs. 2.6 (1.4-4); p < 0.001). COVID-19 effects could persist beyond the acute infection phase. These effects include changes in quality of life, fatigue, and persistence of physical symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episode syndrome is a rare mitochondrial genetic disorder that can present with a variety of clinical manifestations, including stroke, hearing loss, seizures, and lactic acidosis. The most common genetic mutation associated with this syndrome is M.3243A>G. The main underlying mechanism of the disease relates to protein synthesis, energy depletion, and nitric oxide deficiency. Controlling disease complications and improving patient quality of life are the primary aims of treatment options. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old Arabic female visited Al-Amiri Hospital in Kuwait. The patient was newly diagnosed with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episode syndrome following her admission as a case of status epilepticus requiring further investigation. The patient's seizures were controlled, and she was evaluated to rule out the most serious complications by carrying out appropriate clinical, laboratory, and radiological imaging. The patient was discharged from the hospital after 2 weeks with a follow-up plan. CONCLUSION: This case report emphasizes the importance of considering mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episode syndrome as a potential cause of status epilepticus with lactic acidosis in a young female patient with a past history of stroke-like episodes. It also stresses the most important workup to rule out every possible life-threatening complication to improve patients' lives.

AIMS: Haptoglobin (Hp) is a multifaceted marker of inflammation, and mediates the interplay between obesity, inflammation, and cardiometabolic dysfunction. However, the role of the Hp phenotype in modulating intermittent fasting (IF)-induced cardiometabolic changes remains to be elucidated. METHODS: Hp phenotype was determined for the study subjects. Cardiometabolic markers were assessed before and at the end of four consecutive weeks, dawn to sunset IF. RESULTS: A total of 114 subjects (75 males and 39 females, 38.7 ± 11.7 years, body mass index (BMI) of 30.41 ± 5.09 kg/m2) were recruited. Hp2-2 (n = 55, 48.2 %) and Hp2-1 (n = 53, 46.5 %) were the predominant phenotypes. Significant reductions were observed in serum Hp, IL-6, TNF-α, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), LDL, BMI, and fat mass (FM), while a significant elevation was observed in serum CD163, HDL, and IL-10 at the end of the IF month for the whole population. Based on the Hp polymorphism, significant decreases in Hp, BMI, FM, TG, LDL, and TNF-α, with significant increases in HDL and CD163 levels were observed among subjects with Hp2-2 and Hp2-1 phenotypes. A more pronounced reduction in FM was reported in subjects with Hp2-2 in comparison with Hp2-1. CONCLUSION: Hp gene polymorphism modulates IF-induced changes in cardiometabolic markers. ABSTRACT

(1) Background: ESports is a new trend of sports, which has gained considerable popularity worldwide. There is a scarcity of evidence that focuses on the lifestyle of ESports players (eSP) particularly on symptoms of nomophobia, level of anxiety, sleep quality, food consumption and physical activity. (2) Objective: to determine the prevalence and relationship between symptoms of nomophobia, psychological aspects, insomnia and physical activity of eSP in Saudi Arabia. (3) Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between March and April 2021 using a convenient self-selection adult sample. A total of 893 (216 eSP vs. 677 non-eSP (NeSP)) participants aged over 18 years were included. All participants answered a seven-part validated questionnaire that included: (i) sociodemographic questions; (ii) a symptoms of nomophobia questionnaire; (iii) general anxiety disorder questions, (iv) an insomnia severity index, (v) an Internet addiction scale, (vi) the Yale food addiction scale 2.0 short form and (vii) an international physical activity questionnaire. (4) Results: Among the entire population, the prevalence of moderate to severe nomophobia, anxiety, insomnia, Internet addiction and low physical activity were 29.8%, 13.9%, 63.3%, 27% and 2.8%, respectively. The eSP and NeSP differed significantly in nomophobia scale, anxiety and insomnia values. Compared to NeSP, eSP had a higher level of severe nomophobia p = 0.003, a severe level of anxiety p = 0.025 and symptoms of insomnia p = 0.018. Except for food addiction and physical activity, a positive correlation was identified between symptoms of nomophobia, anxiety and insomnia among eSP. (5) Conclusion: This study reported high prevalence of nomophobia, anxiety and insomnia among eSP compared to NeSP.

This research was carried out to study the variation in ethanol stability and chemical composition of five camel milk samples, including two pasteurized samples (Alwatania and Darir alabaker) and three raw samples (Majaheim, Wadah, and Hamra). Ethanol stability was analyzed by dispersing camel milk samples with 0 to 100% ethanol (v/v). The findings indicate that camel milk samples precipitated after adding an equal volume of ethanol at concentrations between 50% and 64% ethanol, depending on the milk sample. The addition of sodium chloride at different concentrations (1−10%) to camel milk resulted in a significant increase in ethanol stability, and samples from Majaheim and Alwatania exhibited the highest ethanol stability values (88%). In contrast, the addition of EDTA to camel milk for pH ranging between 5.9 and 7.1 has increased ethanol stability with a sigmoidal shape in camel milk. The largest ethanol stability differences were observed in a camel milk sample from Alwatania. Thus, the level of Ca2+ in camel milk may contribute to ethanol stability by shifting the entire profile to higher ethanol stability values. The chemical composition of different camel samples was also determined. The lactose content of camel milk varied significantly (p < 0.05) across samples, ranging from 4.37% in Majaheim camel milk to 4.87% in Alwatania camel milk. The total solids of camel milk varied significantly between raw and pasteurized samples, ranging between 10.17% and 12.10%. Furthermore, protein concentration in camel milk obtained from different camel samples varied, from 2.43% to 3.23% for Hamra and Alwatania, respectively. In conclusion, ethanol stability in camel milk was dependent on the camel breed, pH level, ionic strength, and EDTA addition.
