ABSTRACT

Perivascular macrophages (PVMs) and, to a lesser degree, microglia are targets and reservoirs of HIV and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) in the brain. Previously, we demonstrated that colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) in PVMs was upregulated and activated in chronically SIV-infected rhesus macaques with encephalitis, correlating with SIV infection of PVMs. Herein, we investigated the role of CSF1R in the brain during acute SIV infection using BLZ945, a brain-penetrant CSF1R kinase inhibitor. Apart from three uninfected historic controls, nine Indian rhesus macaques were infected acutely with SIVmac251 and divided into three groups (n = 3 each): an untreated control and two groups treated for 20-30 days with low- (10 mg/kg/day) or high- (30 mg/kg/day) dose BLZ945. With the high-dose BLZ945 treatment, there was a significant reduction in cells expressing CD163 and CD206 across all four brain areas examined, compared with the low-dose treatment and control groups. In 9 of 11 tested regions, tissue viral DNA (vDNA) loads were reduced by 95%-99% following at least one of the two doses, and even to undetectable levels in some instances. Decreased numbers of CD163+ and CD206+ cells correlated significantly with lower levels of vDNA in all four corresponding brain areas. In contrast, BLZ945 treatment did not significantly affect the number of microglia. Our results indicate that doses as low as 10 mg/kg/day of BLZ945 are sufficient to reduce the tissue vDNA loads in the brain with no apparent adverse effect. This study provides evidence that infected PVMs are highly sensitive to CSF1R inhibition, opening new possibilities to achieve viral clearance.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery complications (CACs) in patients who undergoing prosthetic pulmonary valve implantation for congenital heart disease can lead to fetal outcomes. However, the incidence of and risk factors for CACs in these patients remain unknown.Methods and Results: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients who underwent cardiac computed tomography or invasive coronary angiography after prosthetic pulmonary valve implantation at Seoul National University Hospital from June 1986 to May 2021. Among 341 patients, 25 (7.3%) were identified with CACs, and 2 of them died. Among the patients with CACs, congenital coronary anomalies and an interarterial course of the coronary artery were identified in 11 (44%) and 18 (72%) patients, respectively. Interarterial and intramural courses of the coronary artery were associated with a 4.4- and 10.6-fold increased risk of CACs, respectively. Among patients with tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary atresia, the aortic root was rotated further clockwise in patients with coronary artery compression compared to those without it (mean [±SD] 128.0±19.9° vs. 113.5±23.7°; P=0.024). The cut-off rotation angle of the aorta for predicting the occurrence of coronary artery compression was 133°. CONCLUSIONS: Perioperative coronary artery evaluation and prevention of CACs are required in patients undergoing prosthetic pulmonary valve implantation, particularly in those with coronary artery anomalies or severe clockwise rotation of the aortic root.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: A high burden of physical, mental, and occupational health problems among migrant workers has been well-documented, but data on undocumented migrant workers are limited and their well-being has rarely been compared to that of the general population. METHODS: Using data from a cross-sectional survey of non-professional migrant workers in South Korea in early 2021, we described their physical, psychological, social well-being and health behaviors across a wide range of outcomes, including self-rated health, occupational injury, cigarette smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, meal pattern, happiness, mental illness, social support, and social participation. The outcomes were first compared between documented and undocumented migrant workers in generalized linear regressions adjusting for potential confounders. Then, the well-being of the migrant workers was compared against that of the general population using data from the Korean Happiness Survey, which is a nationally representative survey of the South Korean general population conducted in late 2020. The parametric g-formula was performed to adjust for potential confounders. RESULTS: After adjusting for potential confounders, the undocumented migrant workers were less likely to be happy or participate in social communities, and much more likely to have anxiety or depression, smoke cigarettes, or engage in heavy alcohol consumption than the documented migrant workers. When compared to the general South Korean population, an evident social gradient emerged for happiness and mental illness; the undocumented experienced the worst outcome, followed by the documented, and then the general population. Also, the undocumented migrant workers were more likely to smoke cigarettes than the general population. CONCLUSION: The undocumented migrant workers face considerably greater challenges in terms of mental health and happiness, demonstrate higher rates of risky health behaviors such as smoking and heavy drinking, and experience a lack of social support and community integration. A stark social gradient in happiness, mental illness, and cigarette smoking exists among the documented, undocumented migrant workers and the general population in South Korea. Socio-structural factors are likely to play a crucial role in contributing to the suboptimal level of overall well-being of undocumented migrant workers. Policy-level interventions as well as interpersonal efforts are in urgent need.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we report the development of a novel CuOx(3 wt%)/CoFe2O4 nanocubes (NCs) photocatalyst through simple co-precipitation and wet impregnation methods for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of triclosan (TCS) pollutants. Initially, rod-shaped bare CoFe2O4 was synthesized using a simple co-precipitation technique. Subsequently, CuOx was loaded in various percentages (1, 2, and 3 wt%) onto the surface of bare CoFe2O4 nanorods (NRs) via the wet impregnation method. The synthesized materials were systematically characterized to evaluate their composition, structural and electrical characteristics. The CuOx(3 wt%)/CoFe2O4 NCs photocatalyst exhibited superior photocatalytic degradation efficiency of TCS (89.9%) compared to bare CoFe2O4 NRs (62.1 %), CuOx(1 wt%)/CoFe2O4 (80.1 %), CuOx(2 wt%)/CoFe2O4 (87.0 %) under visible light (VL) irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), respectively. This enhanced performance was attributed to the improved separation effectiveness of photogenerated electron (e-) and hole (h+) in CuOx(3 wt%)/CoFe2O4 NCs. Furthermore, the optimized CuOx(3 wt%)/CoFe2O4 NCs exhibited strong stability and reusability in TCS degradation, as demonstrated by three successive cycles. Genetic screening on Caenorhabditis elegans showed that CuOx(3 wt%)/CoFe2O4 NCs reduced ROS-induced oxidative stress during TCS photocatalytic degradation. ROS levels decreased at 30, 60, and 120-min intervals during TCS degradation, accompanied by improved egg hatching rates. Additionally, expression levels of stress-responsible antioxidant proteins like SOD-3GFP and HSP-16.2GFP were significantly normalized. This study demonstrates the efficiency of CuOx(3 wt%)/CoFe2O4 NCs in degrading TCS pollutants, offers insights into toxicity dynamics, and recommends its use for future environmental remediation.

ABSTRACT

Plastic waste has become a global issue and a threat to the ecosystem. The present study isolated polyurethane (PU) degrading bacterial species from soil dumped with plastic wastes. Four bacterial isolates, RS1, RS6, RS9 and RS13 were obtained and their ability to degrade PU in a synthetic medium with PU as a sole source of carbon was assessed individually. After thirty days of incubation, the highest PU weight loss of 67.36 ± 0.32% was recorded in the medium containing RS13 isolate. The results of FTIR revealed the occurrence of carbonyl peaks. The putative isolate RS13 confirmed with the genus Moraxella according to 16S rRNA gene sequencing and the isolate was specified as Moraxella catarrhalis strain BMPPS3. The restriction analysis of Moraxella catarrhalis strain BMPPS3 revealed that the GCAT content to 51% and 49% correspondingly. Moraxella catarrhalis strain BMPPS3 was able to colonize on PU surface and form a biofilm as revealed by SEM investigation. Fatty acids and alkanes were found to be the degradation products by GC-MS analysis. The presence of these metabolites facilitated the growth of strain RS13 and suggested that ester hydrolysis products had been mineralized into CO2 and H2O. Extracellular biosurfactant synthesis has also been found in Moraxella catarrhalis strain BMPPS13 inoculated with synthetic media and mineral salt media containing PU and glucose as carbon sources, respectively with a significant level of cell-surface hydrophobicity (32%). The production and activity of extracellular esterase showed consistent increase from day 1-15 which peaked (1.029 mM/min/mg) on day 24 significantly at P < 0.001. Crude biosurfactants were lipopeptide-based, according to the characteristic investigation. According to this study findings, Moraxella catarrhalis produces biosurfactants of the esterase, urethanase and lipase (lipopeptide) types when carbon source PU is present.

OBJECTIVE: The effectiveness of revascularization for complex aneurysms is well-established. This study aimed to describe the technical characteristics and clinical efficacy of intracranial-to-intracranial (IC-IC) bypass for the treatment of complex intracranial aneurysms. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients with aneurysms who underwent a preplanned combination of surgical or endovascular treatment and IC-IC bypass at our institution between January 2006 and September 2023. IC-IC bypass techniques included four strategies: type A (end-to-end reanastomosis), type B (end-to-side reimplantation), type C (in situ side-to-side anastomosis), and type D (IC-IC bypass with a graft vessel). RESULTS: During the study period, ten patients with aneurysms each underwent IC-IC bypass surgery. Aneurysms were located in the middle cerebral artery (60.0%), anterior temporal artery (10.0%), anterior cerebral artery (20.0%), and vertebral artery (10.0%). There were three saccular aneurysms (30.0%), two fusiform aneurysms (20.0%), one dissecting aneurysm (10.0%), and four pseudoaneurysms (40.0%). We performed the type A strategy on five patients (50.0%), type B on one (10.0%), type C on one (10.0%), and type D on three (30.0%). During a mean period of 68.3 months, good clinical outcomes (modified Rankin Scale score, 0-2) were observed in all patients. Follow-up angiography demonstrated complete aneurysmal obliteration in all patients and good bypass patency in nine of ten patients (90.0%). CONCLUSION: The treatment of complex aneurysms remains a challenge with conventional surgical or endovascular treatments. IC-IC bypass surgery is a useful technique, associated with favorable clinical outcomes, for treating complex aneurysms.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUNDS AND OBJECTIVES: The "Fast track" protocol is an early extubation strategy to reduce ventilator-associated complications and induce early recovery after open-heart surgery. This study compared clinical outcomes between operating room extubation and ICU extubation after open-heart surgery in patients with CHD. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 215 patients who underwent open-heart surgery for CHDs under the scheduled "Fast track" protocol between September 2016 and April 2022. The clinical endpoints were post-operative complications, including bleeding, respiratory and neurological complications, and hospital/ICU stays. RESULTS: The patients were divided into operating room extubation (group O, n = 124) and ICU extubation (group I, n=91) groups. The most frequently performed procedures were patch closures of the atrial septal (107/215, 49.8%) and ventricular septal (89/215, 41.4%) defects. There were no significant differences in major post-operative complications or ICU and hospital stay duration between the two groups; however, patients in group I showed longer mechanical ventilatory support (0.0 min vs. 59.0 min (interquartile range: 17.0-169.0), p < 0.001). Patients in Group O showed higher initial lactate levels (3.2 ± 1.7 mg/dL versus 2.5 ± 2.0 mg/dL, p = 0.007) and more frequently used additional sedatives and opioid analgesics (33.1% versus 19.8%, p = 0.031). CONCLUSIONS: Extubation in the operating room was not beneficial for patients during post-operative ICU or hospital stay. Early extubation in the ICU resulted in more stable hemodynamics in the immediate post-operative period and required less use of sedatives and analgesics.

ABSTRACT

Calcium hypochlorite (Ca(ClO)2), which can be stably stored in powder form for a long period, is widely used as a disinfectant in various fields. A new sterilization process was developed in the present study, where a microalgal medium was sterilized using 0.02% Ca(ClO)2, followed by complete neutralization of the Ca(ClO)2 within 8 h through catalytic reaction of an MnCl2-Na2EDTA complex and a synergistic effect of glucose. When comparing the growth of Chlorella vulgaris in the autoclaved medium, a 2.65 times greater maximum cell growth was observed in cells grown in the medium prepared by treatment of Ca(ClO)2. This result indicates that denaturation of the medium by heat can hinder the growth of some microorganisms. In the case of cultivation of Euglena gracilis, successful culture growth was achieved without growth inhibition or contamination on a medium prepared in the same manner.

ABSTRACT

Cyclodextrin (CD) and its derivatives are receiving attention as a new-generation adsorbent for water pollution treatment due to their external hydrophilic and internal hydrophobic properties. Among types of CD, ß-Cyclodextrin (ßCD) has been a material of choice with a proven track record for a range of utilities in distinct domains, owing to its unique cage-like structural conformations and inclusion complex-forming ability, especially to mitigate emerging contaminants (ECs). This article outlines ßCD composites in developing approaches of their melds and composites for purposes such as membranes for removal of the ECs in aqueous setups have been explored with emphasis on recent trends. Electrospinning has bestowed an entirely different viewpoint on polymeric materials, comprising ßCD, in the framework of diverse functions across a multitude of niches. Besides, this article especially discusses ßCD polymer composite membrane-based removal of contaminants such as pharmaceutical substances, endocrine disruptors chemicals, and dyes. Finally, in this article, the challenges and future directions of ßCD-based adsorbents are discussed, which may shed light on pragmatic commercial applications of ßCD polymer composite membranes.

ABSTRACT

The presence of toxic trace elements (TEs) has resulted in a worldwide deterioration in freshwater ecosystem quality. This study aimed to analyze the distribution of TEs, including chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb), in water, sediment, and organs of Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) collected from selected inland water bodies in Tamil Nadu, India. The water samples exhibited a range of concentrations for TEs: Cr varied from 0.014 to 5.193 µg/L, Ni ranged from 0.283 to 11.133 µg/L, As ranged from 0.503 to 1.519 µg/L, Cd from 0.001 to 0.616 µg/L, and Pb ranged from non-detectable (ND) to 6.103 µg/L. The concentrations of TEs in sediment were found to vary within the following ranges: 5.259 to 32.621 mg/kg for Cr, 1.932 to 30.487 mg/kg for Ni, 0.129 to 0.563 mg/kg for As, 0.003 to 0.011 mg/kg for Cd, ND to 0.003 mg/kg for Hg, and 0.404 to 1.575 mg/kg for Pb. The study found that the accumulation pattern of TE in fishes across all selected areas was liver > bone > gill > muscle. The organs had TE concentrations of Cr (ND-0.769 mg/kg), Ni (ND-1.053 mg/kg), As (0.002-0.080 mg/kg), Pb (ND-0.411 mg/kg), and Hg (ND-0.067 mg/kg), which was below the maximum residual limit prescribed by EC and FSSAI. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) of TEs exhibited a greater magnitude in comparison with the biota-sediment accumulation factor due to the higher concentration of TEs in fish and lower level in water. The assessment of both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks suggests that the consumption of Tilapia from the study region does not pose any significant risks.

ABSTRACT

This study assesses the bioaccumulation, ecological, and health risks associated with potentially toxic metals (PTMs), including Pb, Hg, Cd, As, and Cr in Hare Island, Thoothukudi. The results revealed that the concentration of PTMs in sediment, seawater, and S. wightii ranged from 0.095 to 2.81 mg kg-1, 0.017 to 1.515 mg L-1, and 0.076 to 5.713 mg kg-1, respectively. The highest concentrations of PTMs were found in the S. wightii compared to seawater and sediment. The high bioaccumulation of Hg and As in S. wightii suggests that it can be used as a bioindicator for these elements in this region. The ecological risk indices, which include individual, complex, biological, and ecological pollution indices, suggest that Hare Island had moderate contamination with Hg and Cd. However, there are no human health risks associated with PTMs. This study examines the current ecological and health risks associated with PTMs and emphasizes the importance of regular monitoring.

ABSTRACT

The migration of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and cypermethrin residues from internal organs to edible tissues of ice-held Labeo rohita (rohu) was investigated in this study. The liver (246 µg/kg) had the highest level of ∑OCP residues, followed by the gills (226 µg/kg), intestine (167 µg/kg), and muscle tissue (54 µg/kg). The predominant OCPs in the liver and gut were endosulfan (53-66 µg/kg), endrin (45-53 µg/kg), and dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT; 26-35 µg/kg). The ∑OCP residues in muscle increased to 152 µg/kg when the entire rohu was stored in ice, but they decreased to 129 µg/kg in gill tissues. On days 5 and 9, the total OCPs in the liver increased to 317 µg/kg and 933 µg/kg, respectively. Beyond day 5 of storage, total internal organ disintegration had led to an abnormal increase in OCP residues of liver-like mass. Despite a threefold increase in overall OCP residues by day 9, accumulation of benzene hexachloride (BHC) and heptachlor was sixfold, endrin and DDT were fourfold, aldrin was threefold, and endosulfan and cypermethrin were both twofold. Endosulfan, DDT, endrin, and heptachlor were similarly lost in the gills at a rate of 40%, while aldrin and BHC were also lost at 60 and 30%, respectively. The accumulation of OCP residues in tissues has been attributed to particular types of fatty acid derivatives. The study concluded that while pesticide diffusion to edible tissues can occur during ice storage, the levels observed were well below the allowable limit for endosulfan, endrin, and DDT.

ABSTRACT

Asian sand dust (ASD), also called China dust or yellow dust, mainly occurs in East Asia during spring and autumn. Because ASD enters the body mainly through the respiratory system, it can cause respiratory disorders or worsen underlying diseases. Because of this, it has become an important health concern that threatens the well-being of humans and animals. In this study, we investigated the effects of 15 and 30 mg/kg of Pycnogenol (PYC15 and 30 groups), a pine bark extract, on ASD-induced pulmonary inflammation in mice. We evaluated the inflammatory cell counts, inflammatory cytokines, and matrix-metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 expression in animal models. PYC administration significantly decreased inflammatory cell infiltration into lung tissue; this was accompanied by a reduction in the levels of proinflammatory mediators including interleukin (IL)-1ß (P < 0.01), IL-6 (P < 0.01) and tumour necrosis factor-α (P < 0.01) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids of ASD-exposed mice (ASD group). Histological analysis revealed that PYC suppressed ASD-induced pulmonary inflammation. Moreover, PYC suppressed the levels of matrix-metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 in the lung tissue of ASD-exposed mice, indicating that PYC reduced ASD-induced pulmonary inflammation by suppressing MMP-9. Together, these results indicate that PYC as the potential to treat ASD-driven pulmonary inflammation.

Background and Objectives: Urolithiasis occurrence is uncommon in kidney transplantation patients, though it has serious implications, including acute kidney injury in the transplanted kidney. This study investigates the leading causes of urolithiasis in kidney transplantation patients, the diagnostic process, and the outcomes of multimodal management. Materials and Methods: Data collection spanned from January 1997 to December 2021, involving kidney transplantation patients with urolithiasis from the database of the Korean Society of Endourology and Robotics (KSER) research committee. Analysis encompassed factors triggering urolithiasis, the diagnostic process, stone attributes, treatment methods, and outcomes. Results: Our analysis included 58 kidney transplantation patients with urolithiasis from eight medical centers. Of these patients, 37 were male and 4 had previous urolithiasis diagnoses. The mean age was 59.09 ± 10.70 years, with a mean duration from kidney transplantation to diagnosis of 76.26 ± 183.14 months. The most frequent method of stone detection was through asymptomatic routine check-ups (54.7%). Among the 58 patients, 51 underwent stone treatment. Notably, 95.3% of patients with ureter stones received treatment, a significantly higher rate than the 66.7% of patients with renal stones (p = 0.010). Success rates showed no significant differences between renal (70%) and ureter stone (78.0%) groups (p = 0.881). Conclusions: Urolithiasis in transplanted kidneys constitutes an acute condition requiring emergency intervention. Endo-urological interventions are effective for kidney transplantation patients with urolithiasis. To ensure prevention and early detection, diligent follow-up and routine imaging tests are necessary.

ABSTRACT

Increasing evidence has connected the development of certain neuropsychiatric disorders, as well as neurodegenerative diseases, to stress-induced dysregulation of the immune system. We have shown that escapable (ES) and inescapable (IS) footshock stress, and memories associated with ES or IS, can differentially alter inflammatory-related gene expression in brain in a region dependent manner. We have also demonstrated that the basolateral amygdala (BLA) regulates stress- and fear memory-induced alterations in sleep, and that differential sleep and immune responses in the brain to ES and IS appear to be integrated during fear conditioning and then reproduced by fear memory recall. In this study, we investigated the role of BLA in influencing regional inflammatory responses within the hippocampus (HPC) and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) by optogenetically stimulating or inhibiting BLA in male C57BL/6 mice during footshock stress in our yoked shuttlebox paradigm based on ES and IS. Then, mice were immediately euthanized and RNA extracted from brain regions of interest and loaded into NanoString® Mouse Neuroinflammation Panels for compilation of gene expression profiles. Results showed differential regional effects in gene expression and activated pathways involved in inflammatory-related signaling following ES and IS, and these differences were altered depending on amygdalar excitation or inhibition. These findings demonstrate that the stress-induced immune response, or "parainflammation", is affected by stressor controllability and that BLA influences regional parainflammation to ES or IS in HPC and mPFC. The study illustrates how stress-induced parainflammation can be regulated at the neurocircuit level and suggests that this approach can be useful for uncovering circuit and immune interactions in mediating differential stress outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Exosomes are potential biomarkers for disease diagnosis and treatment, as well as drug carriers. However, as their isolation and detection remain critical issues, convenient, rapid, low-cost, and effective methods are necessary. In this study, we present a rapid and simple method for directly capturing and analyzing exosomes from complex cell culture media using CaTiO3:Eu3+@Fe3O4 multifunctional nanocomposites. The CaTiO3:Eu3+@Fe3O4 nanocomposites were prepared by high-energy ball-milling and used to isolate exosomes by binding CaTiO3:Eu3+@Fe3O4 nanocomposites and the hydrophilic phosphate head of the exosome phospholipids. Notably, the developed CaTiO3:Eu3+@Fe3O4 multifunctional nanocomposites achieved results comparable with those of commercially available TiO2 and were separated using a magnet within 10 min. Moreover, we report a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based immunoassay for detecting the exosome biomarker CD81. Gold nanorods (Au NRs) were modified with detection antibodies, and antibody-conjugated Au NRs were labeled with 3, 3, diethylthiatricarbocyanine iodide (DTTC) as the SERS tags. A method combining magnetic separation and SERS was developed to detect exosomal biomarker CD81. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of this new technique as a useful tool for exosome isolation and detection.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy is linked to various developmental brain disorders. Infants who are asymptomatic at birth might have postnatal neurocognitive complications. However, animal models recapitulating these neurocognitive phenotypes are lacking, and the circuit mechanism underlying behavioral abnormalities is unknown. Here, we show that ZIKV infection during mouse pregnancy induces maternal immune activation (MIA) and leads to autistic-like behaviors including repetitive self-grooming and impaired social memory in offspring. In the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), ZIKV-affected offspring mice exhibit excitation and inhibition imbalance and increased cortical activity. This could be explained by dysregulation of inhibitory neurons and synapses, and elevated neural activity input from mPFC-projecting ventral hippocampus (vHIP) neurons. We find structure alterations in the synaptic connections and pattern of vHIP innervation of mPFC neurons, leading to hyperconnectivity of the vHIP-mPFC pathway. Decreasing the activity of mPFC-projecting vHIP neurons with a chemogenetic strategy rescues social memory deficits in ZIKV offspring mice. Our studies reveal a hyperconnectivity of vHIP to mPFC projection driving social memory deficits in mice exposed to maternal inflammation by ZIKV.

ABSTRACT

The advancement of effective and long-lasting electrocatalysts for energy storage devices is crucial to reduce the impact of the energy crisis. In this study, a two-stage reduction process was used to synthesize carbon-supported cobalt alloy nanocatalysts with varying atomic ratios of cobalt, nickel and iron. The formed alloy nanocatalysts were investigated using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy to determine their physicochemical characterization. According to XRD results, Cobalt-based alloy nanocatalysts form a face-centered cubic solid solution pattern, illustrating thoroughly mixed ternary metal solid solutions. Transmission electron micrographs also demonstrated that samples of carbon-based cobalt alloys displayed homogeneous dispersion at particle sizes ranging from 18 to 37 nm. Measurements of cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, and chronoamperometry revealed that iron alloy samples exhibited much greater electrochemical activity than non-iron alloy samples. The alloy nanocatalysts were evaluated as anodes for the electrooxidation of ethylene glycol in a single membraneless fuel cell to assess their robustness and efficiency at ambient temperature. Remarkably, in line with the results of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry, the single-cell test showed that the ternary anode works better than its counterparts. The significantly higher electrochemical activity was observed for alloy nanocatalysts containing iron than for non-iron alloy catalysts. Iron stimulates nickel sites to oxidize cobalt to cobalt oxyhydroxides at lower over-potentials, which contributes to the improved performance of ternary alloy catalysts containing iron.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are becoming more and more renowned as biocompatible nanomaterials with diverse biological functions. In the present study, the aqueous extract of tea residue (tea filtered waste powder) was used to synthesize the TiO2 NPs and treated for effluent bioremediations. Maximum absorption in the UV-Vis spectrum of the TiO2 NPs was seen at 358 nm, and the XRD pattern reveals peaks at 2 h values of 25.78, 38.24, 47.98, 54.76, 55.32, 62.64, 69.05, 70.15, 75.24, and 83.59 that may be indexed to the (101), (004), (200), (105), (211), (204), (116), (220), (215) and (303). The FT-IR spectra of TiO2 NPs showed a peak at 3420, 2925, 1621, 1382, 1098, and 687 cm-1. The spherical form and size were disclosed by FE-SEM analyses, and the EDAX pattern verified the purity of the TiO2 NPs. The average particles size of the TiO2 NPs was 32 nm. The photodegradation of paper mill waste water is significantly deteriorated up to 99.08% for 600 min, but textile waste water is degraded up to 98.06% for the same duration. Furthermore, we reported that TiO2 NPs may rapidly breakdown industrially hazardous effluents when exposed to sunshine. Overall, this new, straightforward, and environmentally beneficial strategy may be of interest to the management of efficient degradation of dye solutions in the polluted regions.

ABSTRACT

The modern food sector demands versatile nanocomposites of polymers for food to wrappers to inactivate germs linked to foods in order to ensure quality throughout the packaging process. Recently, it has become quite appealing to use zinc oxide nanocomposite with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) assistance for food storage containers. Variable combinations of zinc acetate and Capparis zeylanica leaf extract (3:1, 1:7, 1:3, and 1:1) were used to create nanostructured ZnO at the desired pH (10.5). ZnO/PVA nanocomposites films were created with different weight % of (16, 13, 9 and 5%) ZnO nanoparticles by using solution casting method. The generated ZnO and ZnO/PVA nanocomposites (NCs) were characterized using analytical techniques like X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), ultraviolet spectroscopic analysis (UV-Vis), Fourier-transform infrared analysis (FT-IR), and field emission scanning electron microscopic study (FE-SEM). The generated ZnO and ZnO/PVA NCs were tested for their efficacy as antibacterial agents against Gram + ve (Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram -ve (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and E. coli) bacteria. Under UV-visible irradiation, the methylene blue (MB) breakdown caused by the fabricated undoped ZnO and ZnO/PVA nanomixture was investigated. The FE-SEM investigation for synthesized ZnO from a 1:1 ratio exhibited spherical shaped appearance. However, the nanocomposite made with 5% ZnO showed equally scattered nanoflake particles in the matrix of PVA film as well as on the surface. The XRD results showed that ZnO synthesized with a higher proportion of plant extract produced smaller crystallites, whereas ZnO synthesized with a lower percentage of plant extract produced bigger crystallite sizes. The optimum concentration for the breakdown of methylene blue (MB) among the various concentrations examined was 5% ZnO/PVA. Furthermore, a study of the biomedical efficiency of undoped ZnO and ZnO/PVA revealed that 5% ZnO/PVA had the potential antibacterial efficacies.
