ABSTRACT

Despite modern chemistry's success in providing affordable fertilizers for feeding the population and supporting the ammonia industry, ineffective nitrogen management has led to pollution of water resources and air, contributing to climate change. Here, we report a multifunctional copper single-atom electrocatalyst-based aerogel (Cu SAA) that integrates the multiscale structure of coordinated single-atomic sites and 3D channel frameworks. The Cu SAA demonstrates an impressive faradaic efficiency of 87% for NH3 synthesis, as well as remarkable sensing performance with detection limits of 0.15 ppm for NO3- and 1.19 ppm for NH4+. These multifunctional features enable precise control and conversion of nitrate to ammonia in the catalytic process, facilitating accurate regulation of the ammonium and nitrate ratios in fertilizers. We thus designed the Cu SAA into a smart and sustainable fertilizing system (SSFS), a prototype device for on-site automatic recycling of nutrients with precisely controlled nitrate/ammonium concentrations. The SSFS represents a forward step toward sustainable nutrient/waste recycling, thus permitting efficient nitrogen utilization of crops and mitigating pollutant emissions. This contribution exemplifies how electrocatalysis and nanotechnology can be potentially leveraged to enable sustainable agriculture.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Stroke survivors with impaired balance and motor function tend to have relatively poor functional outcomes. The cerebellum and primary motor cortex (M1) have been suggested as targets for neuromodulation of balance and motor recovery after stroke. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) to the cerebellum or M1 on balance and motor recovery in patients with stroke. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled clinical trial, patients with subacute stroke were randomly divided into 3 groups: M1-, cerebellar-, and sham-iTBS (n=12 per group; 15 sessions, 3 weeks). All outcomes were evaluated before intervention (T0), after 1 week of intervention (T1), after 3 weeks of intervention (T2), and at follow-up (T3). The primary outcome was the Berg balance scale score at T2. Secondary outcomes include the Fugl-Meyer assessment scale for lower extremities, the trunk impairment scale, the Barthel index, the modified Rankin Scale, the functional ambulation categories, and cortical excitability. RESULTS: A total of 167 inpatients were screened, 36 patients (age, 57.50±2.41 years; 10 women, 12 ischemic) were enrolled between December 2020 and January 2023. At T2, M1- or cerebellar-iTBS significantly improved Berg balance scale scores by 10.7 points ([95% CI, 2.7-18.6], P=0.009) and 14.2 points ([95% CI, 1.2-27.2], P=0.032) compared with the sham-iTBS group. Moreover, the cerebellar-iTBS group showed a significantly greater improvement in Fugl-Meyer assessment scale for lower extremities scores by 5.6 points than the M1-iTBS ([95% CI, 0.3-10.9], P=0.037) and by 7.8 points than the sham-iTBS ([95% CI, 1.1-14.5], P=0.021) groups at T2. The motor-evoked potential amplitudes of the M1- and cerebellar-iTBS groups were higher than those of the sham-iTBS group (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Both M1- and cerebellar-iTBS could improve balance function. Moreover, cerebellar-iTBS, but not M1-iTBS, induced significant effects on motor recovery. Thus, cerebellar-iTBS may be a valuable new therapeutic option in stroke rehabilitation programs. REGISTRATION: URL: https://www.chictr.org.cn/; Unique identifier: ChiCTR2100047002.

ABSTRACT

Insecticide toxicity to insect herbivores has long been known to vary across different host plants; this phenomenon has been widely documented in both foliage-feeders and sap-feeders. Species-specific phytochemical content of hostplant tissues is assumed to determine the pattern of induction of insect enzymes that detoxify insecticides, but specific phytochemicals have rarely been linked to host plant-associated variation in pesticide toxicity. Moreover, no studies to date have examined the effects of nectar source identity and phytochemical composition on the toxicity of insecticides to pollinators. In this study, we compared LD50 values for the insecticide bifenthrin, a frequent contaminant of nectar and pollen in agroecosystems, in the western honey bee, Apis mellifera, consuming three phytochemically different monofloral honeys: Nyssa ogeche (tupelo), Robinia pseudoacacia (black locust), and Fagopyrum esculentum (buckwheat). We found that bifenthrin toxicity (LD50) values for honey bees across different honey diets is linked to their species-specific phytochemical content. The profiles of phenolic acids and flavonoids of buckwheat and locust honeys are richer than is the profile of tupelo honey, with buckwheat honey containing the highest total content of phytochemicals and associated with the highest bifenthrin LD50 in honey bees. The vector fitting in the ordination analysis revealed positive correlations between LD50 values and two honey phytochemical richness estimates, Chao1 and Abundance-based Coverage Estimator (ACE). These findings suggest unequal effects among different phytochemicals, consistent with the interpretation that certain compounds, including ones that are rare, may have a more pronounced effect in mitigating pesticide toxicity.

ABSTRACT

Accurately and efficiently predicting elephant flows (elephants) is crucial for optimizing network performance and resource utilization. Current prediction approaches for software-defined networks (SDNs) typically rely on complete traffic and statistics moving from switches to controllers. This leads to an extra control channel bandwidth occupation and network delay. To address this issue, this paper proposes a prediction strategy based on incomplete traffic that is sampled by the timeouts for the installation or reactivation of flow entries. The strategy involves assigning a very short hard timeout (Tinitial) to flow entries and then increasing it at a rate of r until flows are identified as elephants or out of their lifespans. Predicted elephants are switched to an idle timeout of 5 s. Logistic regression is used to model elephants based on a complete dataset. Bayesian optimization is then used to tune the trained model Tinitial and r over the incomplete dataset. The process of feature selection, model learning, and optimization is explained. An extensive evaluation shows that the proposed approach can achieve over 90% generalization accuracy over 7 different datasets, including campus, backbone, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Elephants can be correctly predicted for about half of their lifetime. The proposed approach can significantly reduce the controller-switch interaction in campus and IoT networks, although packet completion approaches may need to be applied in networks with a short mean packet inter-arrival time.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the effect of Erchen Decoction(ECD) on liver mitochondrial function in mice with a high-fat diet and its possible mechanism. A total of sixty C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into a normal group, high-fat group, ECD group, mTORC1 activator(MHY) group, ECD+MHY group, and polyene phosphatidyl choline(PPC) group, with 10 rats in each group. The normal group was given a normal diet, and the other groups were fed a high-fat diet for 20 weeks. At the 17th week, the ECD group and ECD+MHY group were given ECD(8.7 g·kg~(-1)) daily, and the PPC group was given PPC(0.18 g·kg~(-1)) daily, while the remaining groups were given normal saline(0.01 mL·g~(-1)) daily for four weeks. In the 19th week, the MHY group and ECD+MHY group were injected intraperitoneally with MHY(5 mg·kg~(-1)) every other day for two weeks. During the experiment, the general conditions of the mice were observed. The contents of triglyceride(TG) and total cholesterol(TC) in serum were measured. Morphological changes in liver tissue were examined through HE and oil red O staining. The content of adenosine triphosphate(ATP) was determined using chemiluminescence, and mitochondrial membrane potential was assessed using a fluorescence probe(JC-1). Western blot was performed to detect the expression of rapamycin target protein complex 1(mTOR1), ribosomal protein S6 kinase B1(S6K), sterol regulatory element binding protein 1(SREBP1), and caveolin 1(CAV1). RESULTS:: revealed that compared with the normal group, the mice in the high-fat group exhibited significant increases in body weight and abdominal circumference(P<0.01). Additionally, there were significant increases in TG and TC levels(P<0.01). HE and oil red O staining showed that the boundaries of hepatic lobules were unclear; hepatocytes were enlarged, round, and irregularly arranged, with obvious lipid droplet deposition and inflammatory cell infiltration. The liver ATP content and mitochondrial membrane potential decreased significantly(P<0.01). The expression of p-mTOR, p-S6K, and n-SREBP1 increased significantly(P<0.01), while the expression of CAV1 decreased significantly(P<0.01). Compared with the high-fat group, the body weight and TG content of mice in the ECD group and PPC group decreased significantly(P<0.05). Improvements were observed in hepatocyte morphology, lipid deposition, and inflammatory cell infiltration. Furthermore, there were significant increases in ATP content and mitochondrial membrane potential(P<0.05 or P<0.01). The expression of p-mTOR, p-S6K, and n-SREBP1 decreased significantly in the ECD group(P<0.01), while CAV1 expression increased significantly(P<0.01). However, the indices mentioned above did not show improvement in the MHY group. When the ECD+MHY group was compared with the MHY group, there were significant reductions in body weight and TG contents(P<0.05). The morphological changes of hepatocytes, lipid deposition, and inflammatory cell infiltration were recovered. Moreover, there were significant increases in liver ATP content and mitochondrial membrane potential(P<0.05 or P<0.05). The expression of p-mTOR, p-S6K, and n-SREBP1 decreased significantly(P<0.01), while CAV1 expression increased significantly(P<0.01). In conclusion, ECD can improve mitochondrial function by regulating the mTORC1/SREBP1/CAV1 pathway. This mechanism may be involved in the resolution of phlegm syndrome and the regulation of lipid metabolism.

ABSTRACT

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies with a hallmark of aberrant metabolism. The mechanism of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) underlying the aggressive behaviors and glycolysis of HCC is poorly understood. In this study, we identified, via microarray, novel lncRNA NONHSAT024276 as a potential tumor suppressor in HCC. The downregulation of NONHSAT024276 closely correlated with larger tumor volume and higher aspartate transaminase levels. Functional experiments were performed to verify the role of NONHSAT024276 in HCC progression, and the negative effects of NONHSAT024276 expression on cell proliferation and migration were identified. Mechanistically, NONHSAT024276 directly bound to polypyrimidine tract-binding protein 1 (PTBP1), downregulating it and forming a feedback loop. Furthermore, NONHSAT024276 increased the ratio of M1 and M2 isoforms of pyruvate kinase (PKM1/PKM2) and also obstructed the PTBP1/PKM-mediated glycolysis. Finally, the rescue assays confirmed that NONHSAT024276 functioned in HCC via downregulating PTBP1 to increase the PKM1/PKM2 ratio. Hence, this study supported a model in which NONHSAT024276 downregulated PTBP1 and formed a feedback loop to increase the PKM1/PKM2 ratio to inhibit glycolysis and progression of HCC, opening new prospects for preventing or treating HCC.

ABSTRACT

Over decades, pesticide regulations have cycled between approval and implementation, followed by the discovery of negative effects on nontarget organisms that result in new regulations, pesticides, and harmful effects. This relentless pattern undermines the capacity to protect the environment from pesticide hazards and frustrates end users that need pest management tools. Wild pollinating insects are in decline, and managed pollinators such as honey bees are experiencing excessive losses, which threatens sustainable food security and ecosystem function. An increasing number of studies demonstrate the negative effects of field-realistic exposure to pesticides on pollinator health and fitness, which contribute to pollinator declines. Current pesticide approval processes, although they are superior to past practices, clearly continue to fail to protect pollinator health. In the present article, we provide a conceptual framework to reform cyclical pesticide approval processes and better protect pollinators.

BACKGROUND: At present, a large number of studies have found that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) can be used as biomarkers for diagnosis and monitoring prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The expression of lncRNA cancer susceptibility candidate 7 (CASC7) in HCC has rarely been studied. The purpose of this study was to explore the expression of CASC7 and its correlation with clinical features, and to further analyze its diagnostic value in HCC. METHODS: Serum samples were collected from 80 patients with HCC, 80 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), and 80 healthy people. The expression level of serum CASC7 was detected by droplet digital PCR. Appropriate parametric and nonparametric tests were used for data analysis. RESULTS: The results showed that the expression of CASC7 in serum of patients with HCC was significantly higher than that of patients with CHB (median: 8.8 versus 2.2 copies/µl, p < 0.001) and healthy controls (median: 8.8 versus 3.8 copies/µl, p < 0.001). High expression of serum CASC7 was significantly correlated with tumor number (p = 0.005), intrahepatic metastasis (IM) (p < 0.001), tumor size (p = 0.007) and tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage (p = 0.008). The area under the curve (AUC) of CASC7 to distinguish HCC patients from CHB patients and healthy controls was 0.808 (95% CI: 0.742-0.874) at the cut-off value of 7.24 copies/µl with 63.8% sensitivity and 95.2% specificity. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggested that CASC7 was significantly up-regulated in serum of patients with HCC and closely related to tumor number, IM, tumor size and TNM stage, which may serve as a promising diagnostic biomarker.

BACKGROUND: Previous epidemiological researchers have used various algorithms to identify a second hip fracture; however, there has been no validation of these algorithms to date. This study aimed to verify existing algorithms for identifying second hip fracture under the International Classification of Diseases diagnostic coding systems. Furthermore, we examined the validity of two newly proposed algorithms that integrated the concept of periprosthetic fractures and laterality of the ICD-10 coding system. METHODS: Claims data of patients hospitalized for hip fracture from National Taiwan University Hospitals between 2007 and 2020 were retrieved. Hip fracture was confirmed by 2 orthopaedic surgeons with medical records and imaging data as gold standards. The validity of 9 existing and 2 newly proposed algorithms for identifying second hip fracture was evaluated. RESULTS: The positive predictive value (PPV) range between 84% and 90% in existing algorithms for identifying second hip fractures. Noteworthy, the longer time interval for discrimination resulted in slightly increased PPV (from 87% to 90%), while decreased sensitivity noticeably (from 87% to 72%). When considering the information about periprosthetic fracture, the PPV increased to 91% without diminished sensitivity. The PPV of the newly proposed ICD-10-specific algorithm was 100%. CONCLUSION: Algorithms integrated clinical insights of periprosthetic fractures and laterality concept of ICD-10 coding system provided satisfactory validity and help precisely define second hip fracture in future database research.

ABSTRACT

Interstock is an important agronomic technique for regulating plant growth and fruit quality, and overcoming the incompatibility between rootstocks and scions; however, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this study, the effects and regulatory mechanisms of tangor grafting, with and without interstocks, on the growth and development of scions were analyzed by combining morphology, physiology, anatomy and transcriptomics. Morphological and physiological analyses showed that interstocks ('Aiyuan 38' and 'Daya') significantly improved the growth of seedlings, effectively enhanced the foliar accumulation of chlorophyll and carotenoids, and increased the thickness of leaf tissues. Using 'Aiyuan 38' as the interstock, photosynthetic efficiency and starch content of citrus seedlings improved. Transcriptomics showed that genes related to photosynthesis and photosynthetic antenna proteins were upregulated in interstock-treated seedlings, with significant upregulation of photosystem PSI- and PSII-related genes. In addition, multiple key genes may be involved in plant hormone signaling, starch and sucrose metabolism, and transcriptional regulation. Taken together, these findings provide novel insights into the role of interstocks in regulating and contributing to the growth and development of grafted seedlings, and will further define and deploy candidate genes to explore the mechanisms of rootstock-interstock-scion interactions.

Xyloglucan endotransglycosylase (XET) genes are widely distributed in most plants, but the codon usage bias of XET genes has remained uncharacterized. Thus, we analyzed the codon usage bias using 4500 codons of 20 XET genes to elucidate the genetic and evolutionary patterns. Phylogenetic and hierarchical cluster analyses revealed that the 20 XET genes belonged to two groups. The closer the genetic distance, the more similar the codon usage preference. The codon usage bias of most XET genes was weak, but there was also some codon usage bias. AGA, AGG, AUC, and GUG were the top four codons (RSCU > 1.5) in the 20 XET genes. CitXET had a stronger codon usage bias, and there were eight optimal codons of CitXET (i.e., AGA, AUU, UCU, CUU, CCA, GCU, GUU, and AAA). The RSCU values underwent a correspondence analysis. The two main factors affecting codon usage bias (i.e., Axes 1 and 2) accounted for 54.8% and 17.6% of the total variation, respectively. Multiple correspondence analysis revealed that XET genes were widely distributed, with Group 1 genes being closer to Axis 1 than Group 2 genes, which were closer to Axis 2. Codons with A/U at the third codon position were distributed closer to Axis 1 than codons with G/C at the third codon position. PgXET, ZmXET, VlXET, VrXET, and PcXET were biased toward codons ending with G/C. In contrast, CitXET, DpXET, and BrpXET were strongly biased toward codons ending with A/U, indicating that these XET genes have a strong codon usage bias. Translational selection and base composition (especially A and U at the third codon position), followed by mutation pressure and natural selection, may be the most important factors affecting codon usage of 20 XET genes. These results may be useful in clarifying the codon usage bias of XET genes and the relevant evolutionary characteristics.

In autumn and spring, citrus leaves with a Ponkan (Citrus reticulata Blanco cv. Ponkan) genetic background (Harumi, Daya, etc.) are prone to abnormal physiological chlorosis. The effects of different degrees of chlorosis (normal, mild, moderate and severe) on photosynthesis and the chlorophyll metabolism of leaves of Citrus cultivar (Harumi) were studied via field experiment. Compared with severe chlorotic leaves, the results showed that chlorosis could break leaf metabolism balance, including reduced chlorophyll content, photosynthetic parameters, antioxidant enzyme activity and enzyme activity related to chlorophyll synthesis, increased catalase and decreased enzyme activity. In addition, the content of chlorophyll synthesis precursors showed an overall downward trend expected for uroporphyrinogen III. Furthermore, the relative expression of genes for chlorophyll synthesis (HEMA1, HEME2, HEMG1 and CHLH) was down-regulated to some extent and chlorophyll degradation (CAO, CLH, PPH, PAO and SGR) showed the opposite trend with increased chlorosis. Changes in degradation were more significant. In general, the chlorosis of Harumi leaves might be related to the blocked transformation of uroporphyrinogen III (Urogen III) to coproporphyrinogen III (Coprogen III), the weakening of antioxidant enzyme system activity, the weakening of chlorophyll synthesis and the enhancement in degradation.

Loss of quality in citrus fruit is a common occurrence during postharvest storage due to oxidative stress and energy consumption. In recent years, glycine betaine (GB) has been widely applied to postharvest horticulture fruit. This study aimed to investigate the effect of GB treatment (10 mM and 20 mM) on the quality and antioxidant activity of 'Huangguogan' fruit during postharvest storage at room temperature. Our results indicated that both 10 mM and 20 mM treatments effectively reduced weight and firmness losses and maintained total soluble solid (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), and ascorbic acid contents. Additionally, GB treatment significantly increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes, maintained higher levels of total phenols and total flavonoids, and led to slower accumulation of H2O2. A transcriptome analysis conducted at 28 days after treatment (DAT)identified 391 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between 20 mM GB (GB-2) and the control (CK) group. These DEGs were enriched in various pathways, particularly related to oxygen oxidoreductase, peroxidase activity, and flavonoid biosynthesis. Overall, the application of GB proved beneficial in enhancing the storability and extending the shelf life of 'Huangguogan' fruit.

BACKGROUND: Research related to neonatal pain management has received increasing attention in recent years. Effective pain management contributes to the maintenance of the healthy physical and mental growth of the newborn. To better understand this research topic, we analyzed the current state of development in this field over the past thirteen years by bibliometric analysis and provide directions for future research. METHODS: Original articles were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) between January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2022, the title and abstract clearly stating 'neonatal pain management' or its alternative search keywords. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and the WoS analysis tool were used to analyze and present the data. RESULTS: A total of 967 articles met the inclusion criteria. Significant growth of the number of publications increased roughly fourfold from 2010 to 2022. Overall, the United States and Canada were the highest contributors to neonatal pain management research. Weak cooperation was observed in international research (developing and developed countries) and cross-institutional cooperation. Neonatal pain-related research was the most common focus. Pain education and interventions for parents and medical personnel have also received increasing attention recently. CONCLUSION: The current study revealed that research in terms of publications on neonatal pain management has rapidly increased for more than the past ten years. Developed countries, especially the United States and Canada, were more concerned with this topic than developing countries. More international research and cross-institutional cooperation are required to promote the development of neonatal pain medicine in the future.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To assess whether the use of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) in late-preterm and term newborns with haemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) is associated with an increased risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in a tertiary centre. Infants with HDN during early neonatal period (<7 days) who were of ≥34 weeks' gestation and born between January 2019 and October 2021 were included. Propensity score, interaction as well as univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were employed. RESULTS: One-thousand two-hundred and fifty-nine infants with HDN were enrolled, of whom 192 (15.3%) received IVIG. NEC was diagnosed in 29 (2.3%) patients with 5 (2.6%) in the IVIG group and 24 (2.2%) in the non-IVIG group. No significant association between IVIG administration and confirmed NEC was observed using univariate analysis (p > 0.05). The possible predictors of NEC, as assessed by multivariate analysis, were caesarean delivery, haemoglobin on admission <130 g/L and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). There was no interactive effect of IVIG against NEC for prematurity, low birth weight, caesarean delivery, haemoglobin on admission <130 g/L and PDA. CONCLUSIONS: In late-preterm and term infants with HDN, there was no evidence that the early use of IVIG led to the development of NEC.

ABSTRACT

Imatinib is a crucial therapeutic strategy against chronic myeloid leukemia. Though superficial edema is a common adverse effect of imatinib, massive fluid retention is rarely reported. Here, we report the case of an adolescent who had tolerated imatinib for a long time, and then presented with massive pleural/pericardial effusion during an episode of Campylobacter jejuni bacteremia. A stepwise and comprehensive survey excluded all other plausible causes of disease. The Naranjo scale was used to assess the probability of an adverse effect of medication, and the score turned out to be 9, indicating severe fluid retention to be a definite reaction to imatinib. Drug discontinuation, antibiotic administration, and invasive procedures improved this condition. After this episode, the patient could tolerate imatinib again, illustrating the transient and reversible nature of this reaction. Since prolonged imatinib usage is crucial for chronic myeloid leukemia control, alertness to drug-related adverse effects is recommended, even if the subject has previously shown a good tolerance to the drug due to various physical conditions, especially physiological stressors, like infection or inflammation.

ABSTRACT

Norovirus is a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in Taiwan. To improve diagnosis as part of laboratory surveillance, AGE surveillance was conducted using a new fluorescent probe hydrolysis-based insulated isothermal polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method, the POCKIT system, and the results were compared with those obtained from conventional methods. A total of 119 clinical stool samples from reported AGE outbreaks were collected for this study. From 83 real-time reverse transcription PCR (rRT-PCR) norovirus-positive cases, the POCKIT system identified 78 with a sensitivity of 90.3% in GI genogroup and 96.7% in GII genogroup. The specificity for both GI and GII genogroups was 100%. Overall, the POCKIT system is faster and easier to use than the conventional rRT-PCR method, and because of its high sensitivity and specificity, this system is a promising alternative for the detection of norovirus in patients with AGE, and would benefit public health laboratories for near real-time surveillance of AGE epidemic outbreaks.

ABSTRACT

Tangor, an important citrus type, is a hybrid of orange and mandarin and possesses their advantageous characteristics. Fruit quality is an important factor limiting the development of the citrus industry and highly depends on fruit development and ripening programs. However, fruit development and quality formation have not been completely explored in mandarin-orange hybrids. We sequenced the metabolome and transcriptome of three mandarin-orange hybrid cultivars at the early fruiting [90 days after full bloom (DAFB)], color change (180 DAFB), and ripening (270 DAFB) stages. Metabolome sequencing was performed to preliminarily identify the accumulation patterns of primary and secondary metabolites related to fruit quality and hormones regulating fruit development. Transcriptome analysis showed that many genes related to primary metabolism, secondary metabolism, cell wall metabolism, phytohormones, and transcriptional regulation were up-regulated in all three cultivars during fruit development and ripening. Additionally, multiple key genes were identified that may play a role in sucrose, citric acid and flavonoid accumulation, cell wall modification, and abscisic acid signaling, which may provide a valuable resource for future research on enhancement of fruit quality of hybrid citrus. Overall, this study provides new insights into the molecular basis of pulp growth and development regulation and fruit quality formation in mandarin-orange hybrids.

Adequate yield and fruit quality are required in commercial plum production. The pollen source has been shown to influence fruit set and fruit characteristics. In this study, 'Siyueli', 'Fenghuangli' and 'Yinhongli' were used as pollinizers of 'Fengtangli' plum. Additionally, self-pollination, mixed pollination, and open pollination were performed. We characterized the differences in pollen tube growth, fruit set and fruit quality among pollination combinations. 'Fengtangli' flowers pollinated by 'Fenghuangli' had more pistils with pollen tubes penetrating the ovary and the highest fruit set rate, while the lowest fruit set rate was obtained from self-pollination. In self-pollinated flowers, 33% of pistils had at least one pollen tube reaching the ovary, implying that 'Fengtangli' is partially self-compatible. Pollen sources affected 'Fengtangli' fruit size, weight, pulp thickness, soluble solids, and sugar content. Transcriptome analysis of 'Siyueli'-pollinated and 'Yinhongli'-pollinated fruits revealed 2762 and 1018 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved in the response to different pollen sources. DEGs were enriched in plant hormone signal transduction, starch and sucrose metabolism, and MAPK signaling pathways. Our findings provide a reference for the selection of suitable pollinizers for 'Fengtangli' plum and promote future research on the metaxenia effect at the molecular level.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To evaluate polypharmacy-related problems in the elderly people who live in rural through a proactive pharmaceutical care project under a novel remote medical service infrastructure (the Houston-Apollo polypharmacy project). METHODS: It is a prospectively cross-sectional study. The elderly aged 65 years old lived in communities executed the congregate meal service and joined the Houston-Apollo project were included. During March and July on 2020, the pharmaceutical care team of Houston-Apollo polypharmacy project interviewed old people and collected their medications by remote video. Polypharmacy situation and drug-related problems, including potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs), anticholinergic burden (ACB) and risk of sarcopaenia, were evaluated by clinical pharmacists. In addition, we analysed the categories of the prescription types between polypharmacy and non-polypharmacy users, polypharmacy users with and without PIMs or ACB. A patient-specific integrated pharmacist's note for medication education and a dear doctor letter (as needed) were generated and delivered within 2-weeks postinterviewed. Age- and sex-adjusted logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association between polypharmacy and these potential medication problems. RESULTS: There were 87 older people (mean age = 75.9) and 536 long-term medications were collected. Among them, 52% were defined as polypharmacy users. Polypharmacy was significantly associated with higher risk of PIMs and ACB. The adjusted odd ratio was 5.31 (95% CI: 2.02-13.9) and 10.1 (95% CI: 3.4-29.7), respectively. Among polypharmacy users, there were nearly double the prescriptions for the nervous system and musculoskeletal system among patients with PIMs compared with those without PIMs. Besides, polypharmacy users with ACB showed higher rate of prescriptions for the nervous system and the alimentary tract and metabolism system compared with those without ACB. CONCLUSION: Polypharmacy was significantly associated with negative impact of medication safety among the elderly people in rural area. A persistent remote pharmaceutical care intervention was crucial for improving this problem.
