ABSTRACT

Transparent dielectric ceramics are splendid candidates for transparent pulse capacitors (TPCs) due to splendid cycle stability and large power density. However, the performance and service life of TPCs at present are threatened by overheating damage caused by dielectric loss. Here, a cooperative optimization strategy of microstructure control and superparaelectric regional regulation is proposed to simultaneously achieve excellent energy storage performance and real-time temperature monitoring function in NaNbO3-based ceramics. By introducing aliovalent ions and oxides with large bandgap energy, the size of polar nanoregions is continuously reduced. Due to the combined effect of increased relaxor behavior and fine grains, excellent comprehensive performances are obtained through doping appropriate amounts of Bi, Yb, Tm, and Zr, Ta, Hf in A- and B-sites of the NaNbO3 matrix, including recoverable energy storage density (5.39 J cm-3), extremely high energy storage efficiency (91.97%), ultra-fast discharge time (29 ns), and superior optical transmittance (≈47.5% at 736 nm). Additionally, the phenomenon of abnormal fluorescent negative thermal expansion is realized due to activation mechanism of surface phonon at high temperatures that can promote the formation of [Yb···O]-Tm3+ pairs, showing great potential in real-time temperature monitoring of TPCs. This research provides ideas for developing electronic devices with multiple functionalities.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The association between changes in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) over time and the risk of stroke remains inconclusive. We aimed to evaluate the relation of eGFR change during the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial (CSPPT) with the risk of first stroke during the subsequent post-trial follow-up. METHODS: A total of 11,742 hypertensive participants with two eGFR measurements (median measure interval, 4.4; interquartile range, 4.2-4.6 years) and without a history of stroke from the CSPPT were included in this analysis. RESULTS: Over a median post-trial follow-up of 4.4 years, 729 first strokes were identified, of which 635 were ischemic, 88 were hemorrhagic, and 6 were uncertain types of strokes. Compared with those with 1 to <2% per year increase in eGFR (with the lowest stroke risk), those with an increase in eGFR of ≥4% per year had significantly increased risks of first stroke (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 1.96; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10-3.50) and first ischemic stroke (adjusted HR 2.14; 95% CI, 1.17-3.90). Similarly, those with a decline in eGFR of ≥5% per year also had significantly increased first stroke (adjusted HR 2.13; 95% CI, 1.37-3.31) and first ischemic stroke (adjusted HR 1.89; 95% CI, 1.19-3.02) risk. However, there was no significant association between eGFR change and first hemorrhagic stroke. A similar result was found when the change in eGFR was quantified as an absolute annual change. CONCLUSION: In Chinese hypertensive patients, both the decline and increase of eGFR levels were independently associated with the risks of first stroke or first ischemic stroke.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: For hypertensive patients without a history of stroke or myocardial infarction (MI), the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial (CSPPT) demonstrated that treatment with enalapril-folic acid reduced the risk of primary stroke compared with enalapril alone. Whether folic acid therapy is an affordable and beneficial treatment strategy for the primary prevention of stroke in hypertensive patients from the Chinese healthcare sector perspective has not been thoroughly explored. METHODS: We performed a cost-effectiveness analysis alongside the CSPPT, which randomized 20,702 hypertensive patients. A patient-level microsimulation model based on the 4.5-year period of in-trial data was used to estimate costs, life years, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) for enalapril-folic acid vs. enalapril over a lifetime horizon from the payer perspective. RESULTS: During the in-trial follow-up period, patients receiving enalapril-folic acid gained an average of 0.016 QALYs related primarily to reductions in stroke, and the incremental cost was $706.03 (4553.92 RMB). Over a lifetime horizon, enalapril-folic acid treatment was projected to increase quality-adjusted life years by 0.06 QALYs or 0.03 life-year relative to enalapril alone at an incremental cost of $1633.84 (10,538.27 RMB), resulting in an ICER for enalapril-folic acid compared with enalapril alone of $26,066.13 (168,126.54 RMB) per QALY gained and $61,770.73 (398,421.21 RMB) per life-year gained, respectively. A probabilistic sensitivity analysis demonstrated that enalapril-folic acid compared with enalapril would be economically attractive in 74.5% of simulations at a threshold of $37,663 (242,9281 RMB) per QALY (3x current Chinese per capita GDP). Several high-risk subgroups had highly favorable ICERs < $12,554 (80,976 RMB) per QALY (1x GDP). CONCLUSIONS: For both in-trial and over a lifetime, it appears that enalapril-folic acid is a clinically and economically attractive medication compared with enalapril alone. Adding folic acid to enalapril may be a cost-effective strategy for the prevention of primary stroke in hypertensive patients from the Chinese health system perspective.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the prospective association between self-perceived psychological stress and first stroke, and to examine possible effect modifiers among adults with hypertension. METHODS: A total of 20,688 hypertensive adults with information on self-perceived psychological stress at baseline were included from the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial. Participants were randomly assigned to a double-blind treatment of receiving a single tablet daily with either 10 mg enalapril and 0.8 mg folic acid or 10 mg enalapril alone. Follow-up visits occurred every 3 months after randomization. Psychological stress was measured with a one-item 3-point rating scale. The primary outcome was first stroke (fatal or nonfatal). RESULTS: The median treatment period was 4.5 years. Compared with participants with low levels of psychological stress, those with high psychological stress had a significantly higher risk of first stroke (adjusted hazard ratio = 1.40, 95% confidence interval = 1.01 to 1.94) or first ischemic stroke (adjusted hazard ratio = 1.45; 95% confidence interval = 1.01 to 2.09). Moreover, a stronger positive relationship between psychological stress and first stroke was found in participants with time-averaged mean arterial pressure <101 mm Hg (median; p-interaction = .004) during the treatment period. However, our study did not find a significant association between psychological stress and first hemorrhagic stroke. CONCLUSIONS: Higher psychological stress was associated with an increased risk of first stroke among treated hypertensive patients, especially in those with lower mean arterial pressure during the treatment period.

BACKGROUND: Associations between vitamin D and stroke remain inconsistent. One major risk factor for stroke is high blood glucose, but the role it plays in this association is not well studied. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the individual association between plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and risk of first stroke stratified by fasting blood glucose (FBG), and the joint associations between plasma 25(OH)D, glycemic status, and first stroke in hypertensive adults. METHODS: This study was a nested, case-control design utilizing data from the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial (CSPPT). This analysis included 591 first stroke cases (of which 475 were ischemic stroke, 114 were hemorrhagic stroke, and 2 were uncertain type) and 591 matched controls. The age range of the study population was 45-75 y. The normal FBG (NFG) group had FBG <5.6 mmol/L,  and the impaired FBG (IFG) group had FBG ≥5.6 mmol/L and <7.0 mmol/L. Diabetes was defined as participants with FBG ≥7 mmol/L or who were receiving treatment with hypoglycemic agents. ORs (95% CIs) were calculated using unconditional logistic regression models. RESULTS: Multivariable adjusted models revealed an inverse association between quartiles of 25(OH)D and risk of first stroke among participants with NFG, but the opposite trend was observed for those with IFG or diabetes. The largest ORs (>2) were observed among patients with diabetes, compared with the reference group of NFG and high 25(OH)D. Those with NFG and low 25(OH)D (OR = 1.73, 95% CI: 1.22 to 2.44) or those with IFG and high 25(OH)D (OR = 1.74, 95% CI: 1.14 to 2.67) both had a higher risk of total stroke. There was a significant interaction between 25(OH)D and a combined group of IFG and diabetes (P = 0.001). Similar results were observed for ischemic stroke. CONCLUSIONS: In a hypertensive population, the relation between plasma 25(OH)D and risk of first stroke was significantly modified by FBG. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Uncertainty remains regarding the association between the risk of stroke and plasma copper levels in population with copper mostly in normal range due to limited data. We examined the association between baseline plasma copper and risk of first stroke in Chinese community-dwelling population. METHODS: We conducted a nested case control study from 'H-type Hypertension and Stroke Prevention and Control Project'. A total of 1255 first stroke cases and 1255 controls matched for age, sex and study site were included in the analysis. Conditional logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between plasma copper and first stroke. RESULTS: The overall mean of copper was 15.90 (2.66) µmol/L. In total, 94.26% participants' copper concentration was in the normal range by Mayo Clinic laboratory reference values. Smoothing curve showed that the associations of plasma copper with first stroke and its subtypes were linear. Each standard deviation (SD) increment of plasma copper was independently and positively associated with risk of first stroke [odds ratio (OR): 1.17, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.07-1.28]. The multivariable ORs with 95% CIs for total stroke, ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke in the highest versus the lowest quartile of plasma copper were 1.49 (1.16-1.90; P-trend = 0.001), 1.46 (1.12-1.92; P-trend = 0.004) and 2.05 (0.95-4.38; P-trend = 0.050), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Baseline plasma copper was positively associated with risk of first ischemic stroke in an approximately linear fashion among Chinese community population (80.32% hypertensives), although their copper levels were mostly within the normal range according to current reference values. Our findings warrant additional investigation.

ABSTRACT

The synergistic piezo-photocatalysis with enhanced efficiency for degrading obstinate pollutants in wastewater is considered as an advanced way to ameliorate the global water contamination. In this work, we report a facile route to construct the Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3@Ag composite by photoreduction of AgNO3 to obtain Ag on Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 nanoparticles. And the composite was used to degrade three representative pollutants, i.e. ciprofloxacin, methyl orange and mitoxantrone hydrochloride. Remarkably, for methyl orange solution with the initial concentration of 10 mg/L, the degradation rate constant of the composite reached 0.051 min-1. H+ and •O2- play a major role in this degradation process, verified by the radical quenching experiments. The absorption platform of Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 was located in the UV region, after introducing Ag in the composite, the absorption region broadened to both UV and visible light, greatly promoting the response to light. Simultaneously, the induced piezo-potential by mechanical energy in Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 hindered the carrier recombination, resulting in high-efficiency synergistic piezo-photocatalytic process. This work provides a paradigm to innovate both material and catalytic way for degrading multiple organic pollutants.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the measurement properties of two versions of EQ-5D (i.e.EQ-5D-3L and EQ-5D-5L) in hypertensive patients in rural China. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was carried out in hypertensive patients in rural China. We compared the ceiling effects, redistribution properties, informativity, known-groups validity, and relative efficiency of the 3L and 5L and examined their agreement. RESULTS: A total of 11,412 patients were enrolled in our study. The mean EQ-5D index score was 0.84 (SD 0.21) according to the 5L and 0.86 (SD 0.17) according to the 3L. A good agreement was observed between the 3L and 5L. The overall ceiling effect decreased from 46.4% (3L) to 29.4% (5L). The Shannon index, H' improved in all dimensions when used 5L. When used 3L, the median responses of all groups were consistent with 5L across the three dimensions of 'mobility', 'self-care', 'usual activities', while the median responses were inconsistent for the 'pain/discomfort' and 'anxiety/depression' dimensions. The 3L performed better in eight comorbidities in terms of F-statistics and six comorbidities in terms of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROCs). The 5L performed better both in terms of the F-statistics and AUROCs in age, education level, anti-hypertensive medication use. CONCLUSION: Taking all comparisons into account, we recommend the EQ-5D-5L for use in patients with hypertension in rural China.

BACKGROUND: Dietary recommendations regarding egg intake remain controversial topic for public health. We hypothesized that there was a positive association between egg consumption and all-cause mortality. METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we enrolled 9885 adults from a community-based cohort in Anhui Province, China during 2003-05. Egg consumption was assessed by food questionnaire. Stratified analyses were performed for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, smoking, drinking and laboratory tests. RESULTS: After an average follow-up of 14.1 years, 9444 participants were included for analysis. A total of 814 deaths were recorded. Participants' BMI and lipid profile had no significantly difference between three egg consumption groups. BMI was 21.6±2.7 of the whole population, especially BMI>24 was only 17.3%. A bivariate association of egg consumption >6/week with increased all-cause mortality was observed compared with ≤6/week (RR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.73, P = 0.018). A significant interaction was observed for BMI ≥ 21.2 kg/m2 vs. BMI<21.2 kg/m2 (P for interaction: 0.001). No other significant interactions were found. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, consuming >6 eggs/week increased risk of all-cause mortality, even among lean participants, especially who with BMI ≥ 21.2 kg/m2. Eggs are an easily accessible and constitute an affordable food source in underdeveloped regions. Consuming <6 eggs/week may be the most suitable intake mode.

ABSTRACT

We aimed to evaluate the relationship of plasma Mg with the risk of new-onset hyperuricaemia and examine any possible effect modifiers in hypertensive patients. This is a post hoc analysis of the Uric acid (UA) Sub-study of the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial (CSPPT). A total of 1685 participants were included in the present study. The main outcome was new-onset hyperuricaemia defined as a UA concentration ≥417 µmol/l in men or ≥357 µmol/l in women. The secondary outcome was a change in UA concentration defined as UA at the exit visit minus that at baseline. During a median follow-up duration of 4·3 years, new-onset hyperuricaemia occurred in 290 (17·2 %) participants. There was a significantly inverse relation of plasma Mg with the risk of new-onset hyperuricaemia (per sd increment; OR 0·85; 95 % CI 0·74, 0·99) and change in UA levels (per sd increment; ß -3·96 µmol/l; 95 % CI -7·14, -0·79). Consistently, when plasma Mg was analysed as tertiles, a significantly lower risk of new-onset hyperuricaemia (OR 0·67; 95 % CI 0·48, 0·95) and less increase in UA levels (ß -8·35 µmol/l; 95 % CI -16·12, -0·58) were found among participants in tertile 3 (≥885·5 µmol/l) compared with those in tertile 1 (<818·9 µmol/l). Similar trends were found in males and females. Higher plasma Mg levels were associated with a decreased risk of new-onset hyperuricaemia in hypertensive adults.

PURPOSE: Acetaminophen (APAP) is a clinically popular analgesic and antipyretic drug, but excessive APAP can cause fatal hepatotoxicity. Many factors affect the degree of APAP-induced liver injury. This study aimed to investigate how circadian rhythm affects the development of APAP-induced hepatotoxicity and to clarify the roles of photoperiod and dietary rhythm on APAP-induced hepatotoxicity in mice. METHODS: APAP-induced hepatotoxicity models were established by intraperitoneal injection of APAP (400 mg/kg) to mice. The mice were then divided into three treatment groups: normal diet, reversed diet, and reversed photoperiod. RESULTS: More severe liver injury was observed at zeitgeber time 12 (ZT12) than at zeitgeber time 0 (ZT0) in all treatment groups, suggesting that photoperiod played a critical role in APAP-induced liver injury. We observed a change in the expression of the circadian gene Per2, which may be responsible for regulation of liver injury by photoperiod. Our results showed negligible change in Per2 expression with diet reversion, whereas Cry1, Cry2, and Dbp expressions were more highly affected by diet reversion than was Per2 expression. Downstream effects including liver enzyme expression, GSH level, and inflammation factors were also examined to identify the mechanism of liver injury. The results indicated that the circadian gene Per2 participated in APAP biometabolism by regulating the expression of Cyp2e1, which may explain the more severe hepatotoxicity at ZT12 than at ZT0. CONCLUSION: APAP-induced hepatotoxicity can be mediated by photoperiod through the circadian gene Per2, suggesting that medicines containing APAP should be administered not only with food but also according to the appropriate photoperiod.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: While folate is known for its importance in cardiovascular health, it is unknown whether folate status can modify the association between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT). We aimed to investigate this question in a Chinese hypertensive population, who are at high-risk of low folate and atherosclerosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: This report included 14,970 hypertensive adults (mean age 64.5 years; 40.3% male) from the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial (CSPPT) and analyzed the fasting serum LDL-C and folate, and CIMT data obtained at the last follow-up visit. LDL-C was calculated using the Friedewald equation. Serum folate levels were measured by chemiluminescent immunoassay. CIMT was measured by ultrasound. Non-parametric smoothing plots, multivariate linear regression analysis, subgroup analyses and interaction testing were performed to examine the LDL-C-CIMI relationship and effect modification by folate. Consistent with graphic plots, multivariate linear regression showed that LDL-C levels were independently and positively associated with CIMT (ß = 7.69, 95%CI: 5.76-9.62). More importantly, the relationship between LDL-C and CIMT was significantly attenuated with increasing serum folate levels (1st tertile: ß = 10.06, 95%CI: 6.67-13.46; 2nd tertile: ß = 6.81, 95%CI: 3.55-10.07; 3rd tertile: ß = 5.96, 95%CI: 2.55-9.36; P-interaction = 0.045). Subgroup analyses showed the association between LDL-C and CIMT across serum folate tertiles was robust among various strata (all P-interaction >0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Among Chinese hypertensive adults, the serum folate levels could modify the association between LDL-C and CIMT. Our findings, if further confirmed, have important clinical implications.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The association between plasma magnesium and risk of incident cancer remains inconclusive in previous studies. We aimed to investigate the prospective relationship of baseline plasma magnesium concentrations with the risk of incident cancer and to examine possible effect modifiers. METHODS: A nested case-control study with 228 incident cancer cases and 228 matched controls was conducted using data from the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial (CSPPT), a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial, conducted from May 2008 to August 2013. Study outcomes included incident cancer and its subtypes. RESULTS: When plasma magnesium concentrations were assessed as quartiles, a significantly higher incident risk of total cancer was found in participants in quartile 1 (<0.76 mmol/L; odds ratio [OR] = 2.70; 95% CI: 1.33-5.49) and quartile 4 (≥0.89 mmol/L; OR = 2.05; 95% CI: 1.12-3.76), compared with those in quartile 3 (0.83 to <0.89 mmol/L). In cancer site-specific analyses, similar trends were found for gastrointestinal cancer, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, and other cancers. Furthermore, none of the variables, including age, sex, current smoking status, current alcohol intake, BMI, systolic blood pressure, and total cholesterol levels at baseline significantly modified the association between plasma magnesium and cancer risk. CONCLUSIONS: Both low and high plasma magnesium concentrations were significantly associated with an increased incident risk of cancer, compared with the reference concentrations of 0.83 to <0.89 mmol/L among hypertensive adults.

ABSTRACT

We aimed to investigate the association between plasma retinol and incident cancer among Chinese hypertensive adults. We conducted a nested case-control study, including 231 patients with incident cancer and 231 matched controls during a median 4·5-year follow-up of the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial. There was a significant, inverse association between retinol levels and digestive system cancer (per 10 µg/dl increases: OR 0·79; 95 % CI 0·69, 0·91). When compared with participants in the first quartile of retinol (< 52·3 µg/dl), a significantly lower cancer risk was found in participants in quartile 2-4 ( ≥ 52·3 µg/dl: OR 0·31; 95 % CI 0·13, 0·71). However, there was a U-shaped association between retinol levels and non-digestive system cancers where the risk of cancers decreased (although not significantly) with each increment of plasma retinol (per 10 µg/dl increases: OR 0·89; 95 % CI 0·60, 1·31) in participants with retinol < 68·2 µg/dl, and then increased significantly with retinol (per 10 µg/dl increase: OR 1·65; 95 % CI 1·12, 2·44) in participants with retinol ≥ 68·2 µg/dl. In conclusion, there was a significant inverse dose-response association between plasma retinol and the risk of digestive system cancers. However, a U-shaped association was observed between plasma retinol and the risk of non-digestive cancers (with a turning point approximately 68·2 µg/dl).

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Hypertension is a major global public health problem, including rural China. However, studies examining health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for patients with hypertension have been mostly conducted in urban populations. This study aimed to use the EuroQol five-dimensional-five-level (EQ-5D-5L) and its recently developed Chinese value set to analyze HRQoL and its influencing factors among hypertensive population in rural China. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional population-based survey. Standard interview of participants was conducted from July to September 2016 in Donghai County's 334 villages of Jiangsu Province, China. Data collection included the EQ-5D-5L, along with sociodemographic characteristics and disease-related factors such as duration of hypertension, antihypertensive treatment and comorbid conditions. The Tobit regression model was employed to analyze potential influencing factors on HRQoL. RESULTS: A total of 16,596 adults (18 years and older) with hypertension participated in this study. 62.4% were women. The mean utility score was 0.85 (standard deviation [SD] = 0.23). The proportion of participants reporting pain/discomfort problems was highest, while least patients reported problems in self-care dimension. Females, elderly, illiterate patients, ex-smokers and patients with longer duration of hypertension or comorbidities scored lower on HRQoL than others. Stroke, heart failure and coronary heart disease were associated with a larger negative impact on HRQoL among all comorbidities. CONCLUSIONS: The HRQoL was lower in this rural hypertensive population than previously reported urban counterparts. To improve the HRQoL of hypertensive patients in rural areas, it is important to control hypertension and prevent its associated co-morbidities. More attention needs to be directed to elderly female patients with less education who scored much lower HRQoL than their male counterparts.

ABSTRACT

Resolving the structure of natural rubber (NR) has been an important issue for a long time and essential progress has been made. It is well established that non-rubber components have significant effects on the performance of NR. A detailed discussion on the effects of proteins and phospholipids on the chain dynamics of NR will be crucial for the in-depth understanding of the role of proteins and phospholipids in NR. However, to date, there is still a lack of elaborate studies on the dielectric spectroscopy of NR. In the present study, we performed detailed dielectric relaxation analysis, together with rheological measurements, to reveal the effects of proteins and phospholipids on the chain dynamics of NR. Distinctly different from the widely accepted segmental mode (SM) and normal mode (NM), a new relaxation mode in deproteinized NR (DPNR) was identified for the first time, which cannot be found either in NR or in transesterified DPNR (TE-DPNR). Because this new mode relaxation process behaves as a thermally activated process and it is about four orders of magnitude slower than NM, it could be rationally attributed to the relaxation of the phospholipids core of DPNR, named branch mode (BM) relaxation. When further conversion of DPNR to TE-DPNR was conducted, the phospholipids were removed and BM disappeared. In addition, a new relaxation mode, which occurs at considerably lower temperature than that for SM, was revealed in TE-DPNR, and may be related to the relaxation of free mono- or di-phosphate groups at the α ends in TE-DPNR. Hence, the identification of the new relaxation modes in DPNR and TE-DPNR provide new evidence for the natural networking structure linked by protein-based ω ends and phospholipids-based α ends.

ABSTRACT

Previous bismuth-based photocatalysts usually employ a strong acid solution (e.g., HNO3 solution) to obtain an ultrathin structure toward high photocatalytic activity. In this work, the ultrathin layered BiOIO3 nanosheets are successfully synthesized using just the glucose hydrothermal solution. The high-concentration glucose solution shows the obvious acidity after the hydrothermal process, which leads to the quick decrease in thickness of BiOIO3 nanosheets from ∼45.58 to ∼5.74 nm. The ultrathin structure can greatly improve charge carriers' separation and transfer efficiency. The generation of reductive iodide ions brings about oxygen vacancies in the ultrathin nanosheets, then the defect energy level is formed, causing the decreased band gap and improving the visible light absorption. Compared to thick BiOIO3 nanosheet with little oxygen vacancies, much higher carrier separation efficiency and visible light absorption are achieved in the ultrathin nanosheets with oxygen vacancies, resulting in an excellent photocatalytic performance (0.1980 min-1 for RhB degradation), which is much higher than most other bismuth-based photocatalysts. The superoxide radicals (•O2-) and holes (h+) are the major active species responsible for high photocatalytic activity. This work affords an environmentally friendly strategy to synthesize ultrathin photocatalysts with superior photocatalytic properties.

BACKGROUND: Which life satisfaction components could be a target of positive psychological interventions for longevity is largely unknown. We aimed to investigate association of the composite measure of life satisfaction and its individual components with mortality. METHODS: This cohort study included UK Biobank participants who responded to questions concerning five components of life satisfaction at baseline. We generated a composite score representing overall life satisfaction, ranging from 0 (lowest) to 5 (highest). The outcomes were all-cause and cause-specific mortality. We used multivariable Cox regression to estimate hazard ratios (HR) for the associations of interest. RESULTS: Among 165,842 eligible participants, 12,261 all-cause deaths were observed over a median of 12.9-year follow-up. Overall life satisfaction was inversely associated with all-cause mortality (adjusted HR 0.94 [95% CI: 0.93-0.95] per 1 score increment). Health satisfaction showed the strongest association with all-cause mortality, with a fully adjusted HR of 0.52 (95% CI: 0.49-0.55) for high/extreme satisfaction and 0.63 (95% CI: 0.59-0.66) for moderate satisfaction, compared with unsatisfaction (P-trend<0.001), independent of other satisfaction components, regardless of physical health and sociodemographics. The association for family, friendship, work and financial satisfaction was attenuated when adjusted for other life satisfaction components. Similar findings were observed for cause-specific mortality. LIMITATIONS: Observational study with single baseline measurement of life satisfaction precludes the ability to establish causal relationship. CONCLUSIONS: Higher overall life satisfaction was associated with lower mortality. As the major contributor to lower mortality regardless of physical health and sociodemographics, health satisfaction could be an important target of positive psychological interventions for longevity.

ABSTRACT

State-of-the-art processes cannot achieve rubber/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites with satisfactory performance by using pristine MWCNTs and conventional processing equipment. In this work, high performance rubber/MWCNT composites featuring a combination of good mechanical properties, electrical and thermal conductivities and damping capacity over a wide temperature range are fabricated based on a well-developed master batch process. It is demonstrated that the MWCNTs are dispersed homogeneously due to the disentanglement induced by well-wetting and shearing, and the elastic-resilience-induced dispersion of the MWCNTs by rubber chains via the novel processing method. To further enhance the efficacy of elastic-resilience-induced dispersion for MWCNTs, a slightly pre-crosslinked network is constructed in the master batch. Consequently, we obtain rubber/MWCNT composites with unprecedented performance by amplifying the reinforcing effect of relatively low MWCNT loading. This work provides a novel insight into the fabrication of high performance functional elastomeric composites with pristine CNTs by taking advantage of the unique elastic resilience of rubber chains as the driving force for the disentanglement of CNTs.

ABSTRACT

As emerging contaminants, antineoplastic drugs are widely used, but their residues in water may cause long-term genotoxicity to aquatic organisms and human beings. Here, waste moxa ash was selected as biomass raw material and modified by ball milling to obtain carbon-based materials with excellent adsorption performance, which were used to remove the antineoplastic drug mitoxantrone (MTX) from water. The experimental results indicate that moxa ash modified by ball milling in hydrogen peroxide exhibits ultrafast removal of MTX (the removal efficiency reaches 97.66% in 1 min and 99.72% in 30 min). The pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm models accurately describe the MTX adsorption process, and the mechanism of adsorption probably involves pore filling, hydrogen bond, π-π interaction and electrostatic attraction. Not only that, moxa ash also has the ability to remove dyes such as malachite green (97.81%) and methylene blue (99.97%). In this study, a simple and environmentally friendly process was used to convert waste moxa ash into an effective MTX adsorbent, providing a feasible solution for controlling MTX pollution and identifying a circular and economic way to reuse the waste.
