ABSTRACT

Formamidinium lead triiodide (FAPbI3) is the leading candidate for single-junction metal-halide perovskite photovoltaics, despite the metastability of this phase. To enhance its ambient-phase stability and produce world-record photovoltaic efficiencies, methylenediammonium dichloride (MDACl2) has been used as an additive in FAPbI3. MDA2+ has been reported as incorporated into the perovskite lattice alongside Cl-. However, the precise function and role of MDA2+ remain uncertain. Here, we grow FAPbI3 single crystals from a solution containing MDACl2 (FAPbI3-M). We demonstrate that FAPbI3-M crystals are stable against transformation to the photoinactive δ-phase for more than one year under ambient conditions. Critically, we reveal that MDA2+ is not the direct cause of the enhanced material stability. Instead, MDA2+ degrades rapidly to produce ammonium and methaniminium, which subsequently oligomerizes to yield hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA). FAPbI3 crystals grown from a solution containing HMTA (FAPbI3-H) replicate the enhanced α-phase stability of FAPbI3-M. However, we further determine that HMTA is unstable in the perovskite precursor solution, where reaction with FA+ is possible, leading instead to the formation of tetrahydrotriazinium (THTZ-H+). By a combination of liquid- and solid-state NMR techniques, we show that THTZ-H+ is selectively incorporated into the bulk of both FAPbI3-M and FAPbI3-H at ∼0.5 mol % and infer that this addition is responsible for the improved α-phase stability.

ABSTRACT

Although sulfide perovskites usually require high-temperature syntheses, we demonstrate that organosulfides can be used in the milder syntheses of halide perovskites. The zwitterionic organosulfide, cysteamine (CYS; +NH3(CH2)2S-), serves as both the X- site and A+ site in the ABX3 halide perovskites, yielding the first examples of 3D organosulfide-halide perovskites: (CYS)PbX2 (X- = Cl- or Br-). Notably, the band structures of (CYS)PbX2 capture the direct bandgaps and dispersive bands of APbX3 perovskites. The sulfur orbitals compose the top of the valence band in (CYS)PbX2, affording unusually small direct bandgaps of 2.31 and 2.16 eV for X- = Cl- and Br-, respectively, falling in the ideal range for the top absorber in a perovskite-based tandem solar cell. Measurements of the carrier dynamics in (CYS)PbCl2 suggest carrier trapping due to defects or lattice distortions. The highly desirable bandgaps, band dispersion, and improved stability of the organosulfide perovskites demonstrated here motivate the continued expansion and exploration of this new family of materials, particularly with respect to extracting photocurrent. Our strategy of combining the A+ and X- sites with zwitterions may offer more members in this family of mixed-anion 3D hybrid perovskites.

ABSTRACT

Functionalized materials consisting of inorganic substrates with organic adsorbates play an increasing role in emerging technologies like molecular electronics or hybrid photovoltaics. For such applications, the adsorption geometry of the molecules under operating conditions, e.g., ambient temperature, is crucial because it influences the electronic properties of the interface, which in turn determine the device performance. So far detailed experimental characterization of adsorbates at room temperature has mainly been done using a combination of complementary methods like photoelectron spectroscopy together with scanning tunneling microscopy. However, this approach is limited to ensembles of adsorbates. In this paper, we show that the characterization of individual molecules at room temperature, comprising the determination of the adsorption configuration and the electrostatic interaction with the surface, can be achieved experimentally by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). We demonstrate this by identifying two different adsorption configurations of isolated copper(ii) meso-tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (Cu-TCPP) on rutile TiO2 (110) in ultra-high vacuum. The local contact potential difference measured by KPFM indicates an interfacial dipole due to electron transfer from the Cu-TCPP to the TiO2. The experimental results are verified by state-of-the-art first principles calculations. We note that the improvement of the AFM resolution, achieved in this work, is crucial for such accurate calculations. Therefore, high resolution AFM at room temperature is promising for significantly promoting the understanding of molecular adsorption.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Malaria is one of the major public health problems of the country. Factors responsible for reemergence of malaria in India was due to emergence and spread of chloroquine resistant Plasmodium falciparum strains across the country coupled with steady rise in insecticide resistance of the vector mosquitoes. Very little is known about the drug resistance status of P. falciparum in India. As per National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme (NVBDCP), chloroquine is the drug of choice for uncomplicated P. falciparum cases and the combination of Artesunate and Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine (SP) is being used to treat the documented chloroquine-resistant uncomplicated cases. To evaluate the comparative effectiveness and resistance profile of Chloroquine vis-à-vis Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine (SP) in uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum cases as the first-line therapy a study was undertaken at the Malaria Clinic of Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata during the period from July 2007 to December 2007 at Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Kolkata. MATERIAL & METHODS: Following WHO protocol 2003, a total of 100 parasitologically confirmed Plasmodium falciparum cases were recruited as per the recruitment criteria. Among them, 50 patients were given Chloroquine and another 50 patients were given SP. Eight patients were excluded or lost to follow-up during the follow-up period because of failure to follow the protocol. RESULTS: It was observed that in the Chloroquine group out of 50 patients, 30 (60%) showed adequate clinical and parasitological response (ACPR), 15 (30%) had late treatment failure (LTF) and remaining 5 (10%) were lost during the follow up period (LFU). On the other hand in the SP group out of 50 patients, 46 (92%) showed ACPR and only one (2%) had LTF and 3 patients were LFU. The difference of LTF in Chloroquine and Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine groups was statistically significant (p value < 0.05). Also there was statistically significant difference of the mean parasite clearance time (PCT) of Chloroquine (82.7 hours) and SP group (61.3 hours). CONCLUSIONS: Chloroquine failure rate was high which was well above the WHO recommended cut off threshold for drug policy change (> 10%), Sulfadoxine- Pyrimethamine can be used in place of Chloroquine as the first line drug in uncomplicated P. falciparum cases.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The Sunderban area of West Bengal is home to tribal and religious minorities inhabiting various islands. There is a high prevalence of thalassemia among poverty-stricken residents of this region living with meagre health care facilities. This work was planned to determine the proportion of four viral transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs): HIV-1, HIV-2, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) among thalassemia patients attending the sole rural medical college in the region. Materials and Methods: Thalassemia patients (n = 359, age ranging from 1 year to 60 years) attending the thalassemia clinic or being admitted to the indoor facilities for better management were included in the study. Only patients diagnosed with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and with classical clinical features were included in the study. Blood samples of these patients were tested for HIV as per NACO protocol. For HBV and HCV, samples were first tested serologically; reactive samples were collected and sent in the cold chain to a higher centre for nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) for qualitative and quantitative estimation. Clinical and laboratory data was collected, patients were followed up for complications and hospitalisation during the study period, and statistical analysis was performed. Results: Majority of our patients had E-beta-thalassemia (245, 59.81%), followed by beta-thalassemia major (102, 28.30%). NAAT-confirmed HCV infection (14.21%) infection was the most common, followed by HBV (2.51%), and lastly by HIV-1 (0.58%) infection. Among infected thalassemia patients, the mean HCV RNA was 741063 ± 438514.67 IU/ml while the mean HBV DNA level was 4082863 ± 7298514 IU/ml. Co-infections of HIV-1 and HCV and that of HBV and HCV were noted in one patient each (0.28%). HCV-related liver disease (14.21%) and growth retardation (10.31%) were the most typical complication noted, and death occurred in five patients (1.39%) during the study period. Conclusion: Primary care physicians should know HCV infection is the most common TTI among thalassemia patients in rural eastern India.

To understand the shielding of electrokinetics of colloidal particles by polymer coating, we measured the electrophoretic mobility of negatively charged polystyrene sulfate latex (PSL) adsorbed with electrostatically neutral polyethylene oxide (PEO) chains with various molecular weights under different ionic strengths. We confirmed that substantial adsorbed neutral polymer on the particle surface would decrease the absolute value of electrophoretic mobility. Even though the polymer layer is sufficiently thicker compared to the thickness of electric double layer (EDL), the electrophoretic mobility (EPM) never vanishes, which indicates the incompleteness of electrokinetic shielding by an adsorbed neutral polymer. To relate such interesting phenomena, a simple mathematical model has been proposed to evaluate the electrophoretic mobility, assuming the presence of a scaling structure of adsorbed permeable polymer layer does not influence the Poisson-Boltzmann distribution of ions in the electric double layer (EDL). An analytical expression of electrophoretic mobility under Debye-Hu¨ckel approximation has been derived using the method of Ohshima-Kondo theory, which successfully justifies the experimentally obtained data.

ABSTRACT

Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis has recently transformed and modernized biodiversity monitoring. The accurate detection, and to some extent quantification, of organisms (individuals/populations/communities) in environmental samples is galvanizing eDNA as a successful cost and time-efficient biomonitoring technique. Currently, eDNA's application to plants remains more limited in implementation and scope compared to animals and microorganisms. This review evaluates the development of eDNA-based methods for (vascular) plants, comparing its performance and power of detection with that of traditional methods, to critically evaluate and advise best-practices needed to innovate plant biomonitoring. Recent advancements, standardization and field applications of eDNA-based methods have provided enough scope to utilize it in conservation biology for numerous organisms. Despite our review demonstrating only 13% of all eDNA studies focus on plant taxa to date, eDNA has considerable environmental DNA has considerable potential for plants, where successful detection of invasive, endangered and rare species, and community-level interpretations have provided proof-of-concept. Monitoring methods using eDNA were found to be equal or more effective than traditional methods; however, species detection increased when both methods were coupled. Additionally, eDNA methods were found to be effective in studying species interactions, community dynamics and even effects of anthropogenic pressure. Currently, elimination of potential obstacles (e.g. lack of relevant DNA reference libraries for plants) and the development of user-friendly protocols would greatly contribute to comprehensive eDNA-based plant monitoring programs. This is particularly needed in the data-depauperate tropics and for some plant groups (e.g., Bryophytes and Pteridophytes). We further advocate to coupling traditional methods with eDNA approaches, as the former is often cheaper and methodologically more straightforward, while the latter offers non-destructive approaches with increased discrimination ability. Furthermore, to make a global platform for eDNA, governmental and academic-industrial collaborations are essential to make eDNA surveys a broadly adopted and implemented, rapid, cost-effective and non-invasive plant monitoring approach.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Roots of Asparagus racemosus Willd (Shatavari in vernacular) are widely used in Ayurveda as Rasayana for immunostimulation, galactogogue as also in treatment of conditions like ulcers and cancer. Various studies have indicated immunomodulatory properties of Shatavari root extracts and formulations. AIM OF THE STUDY: To study the effect of standardized Asparagus racemosus root aqueous extract (ARE) on systemic Th1/Th2 immunity of SRBC sensitized animals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used HPTLC to quantify steroidal saponins (Shatavarin IV, Immunoside) and flow cytometry to study effects of ARE on Th1/Th2 immunity. SRBC specific antibody titres and DTH responses were also monitored as markers of Th2 and Th1 responses, respectively. We also studied lymphocyte proliferation. Cyclosporin, cyclophosphamide and levamisole were used as controls. RESULTS: Treatment with ARE (100mg/(kg b.w.p.o.)) resulted in significant increase of CD3(+) and CD4/CD8(+) percentages suggesting its effect on T cell activation. ARE treated animals showed significant up-regulation of Th1 (IL-2, IFN-g) and Th2 (IL-4) cytokines suggesting its mixed Th1/Th2 adjuvant activity. Consistent to this, ARE also showed higher antibody titres and DTH responses. ARE, in combination with LPS, Con A or SRBC, produced a significant proliferation suggesting effect on activated lymphocytes. CONCLUSION: The study suggests mixed Th1/Th2 activity of ARE supports its immunoadjuvant potential.

BACKGROUND: Candida Associated Denture Stomatitis is the prevalent fungal pathosis in denture wearers, especially in immunocompromized patients. Existing antifungal agents are ineffective since the Candida species become resistant and also, they become toxic. Origanum vulgare is a herbal plant with high anti-fungal activity against Candida of blood and urine origin. However, it has never been explored against Candida from oral cavity. MATERIALS & METHODOLOGY: Dry leaves of the plant were purchased and authenticated. Oil extraction was done using Hydro-distillation method. Clinical isolates of Candida from denture wearers was speciated using CHROMagar. Well Diffusion test was used to confirm the antifungal activity. Hydro-distillation & Maceration methods of extraction were compared. MIC/MFC was determined using CSLI guidelines. Infra-Red Spectroscopy was used to identify the active functional group. RESULTS: O.vulgare showed 30±3mm of zone of inhibition as against 19mm for fluconazole. The suitable extraction method was Hydro-distillation. MIC & MFC were found to be 0.024% and 0.097% respectively which was much lesser than for fluconazole (0.25%). The active functional group had chemically similar structure as Carvacrol, usually found in antifungal herbs. CONCLUSION: within the limitations of the study, it was concluded that (a)O.vulgare is anticandidal for clinical isolates of oral Candida, (b) Hydro-distillation is an effective method as compared to Maceration (c) MIC & MFC are much lower than that of fluconazole (d) the major functional group was structurally similar to Carvacrol.

ABSTRACT

The experimental discovery of borospherene, the only non-carbon fullerene observed in nature, has generated a lot of interest in the scientific community and led to the theoretical prediction of various endohedrally and exohedrally decorated borospherene. We apply Minima Hopping Method (MHM), a global geometry optimization algorithm at the density functional level to check the stability of recently proposed exohedrally decorated borospherenes M6@B40 for (M = Li, Na, K, Rb, Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Sc and Ti). By performing short MHM runs, we find that the proposed fullerene structures are not global minima. Our new lowest energy structures are significantly deformed and of much lower symmetry. These low energy structures spontaneously aggregate by forming chemical bonds when they are brought together. Therefore, it would be challenging to synthesize bulk materials made out of the theoretically postulated exohedrally decorated borospherenes such as B40M6 which might have technologically useful properties.

ABSTRACT

Using multiwavelets, we have obtained total energies and corresponding atomization energies for the GGA-PBE and hybrid-PBE0 density functionals for a test set of 211 molecules with an unprecedented and guaranteed µHartree accuracy. These quasi-exact references allow us to quantify the accuracy of standard all-electron basis sets that are believed to be highly accurate for molecules, such as Gaussian-type orbitals (GTOs), all-electron numeric atom-centered orbitals (NAOs), and full-potential augmented plane wave (APW) methods. We show that NAOs are able to achieve the so-called chemical accuracy (1 kcal/mol) for the typical basis set sizes used in applications, for both total and atomization energies. For GTOs, a triple-ζ quality basis has mean errors of ∼10 kcal/mol in total energies, while chemical accuracy is almost reached for a quintuple-ζ basis. Due to systematic error cancellations, atomization energy errors are reduced by almost an order of magnitude, placing chemical accuracy within reach also for medium to large GTO bases, albeit with significant outliers. In order to check the accuracy of the computed densities, we have also investigated the dipole moments, where in general only the largest NAO and GTO bases are able to yield errors below 0.01 D. The observed errors are similar across the different functionals considered here.

ABSTRACT

Loss of cognition is one of the age related mental problems and a characteristic symptom of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's. Crataeva nurvala Buch-Ham, a well explored traditional Indian medicinal plant of Westernghats, is routinely used as folkloric medicine to treat various ailments in particular urolithiasis and neurological disorders associated with cognitive dysfunction. The objective of the study was to evaluate the nootropic activity of Crataeva nurvala Buch-Ham stem bark in different learning and memory paradigm viz. Elevated plus maze and Y-maze against scopolamine induced cognitive impairment. Moreover, to elucidate possible mechanism, we studied the influence of Crataeva nurvala ethanolic extract on central cholinergic activity via estimating the whole brain acetyl cholinesterase enzyme. Ethanolic extracts of Crataeva nurvala (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight) were administered to adult Wistar rats for successive seven days and the acquisition, retention and retrieval of spatial recognition memory was determined against scopolamine (1 mg/kg, i.p.) induced amnesia through exteroceptive behavioral models viz. Elevated plus maze and Y-maze models. Further, whole brain acetyl cholinesterase enzyme was estimated through Ellman's method. Pretreatment with Crataeva nurvala ethanolic extract significantly improved spatial learning and memory against scopolamine induced amnesia. Moreover, Crataeva nurvala extract decreased rat brain acetyl cholinesterase activity in a dose dependent manner and comparable to the standard drug Piracetam. The results indicate that ethanolic extract of Crataeva nurvala might be a useful as nootropic agent to delay the onset and reduce the severity of symptoms associated with dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The underlying mechanism of action of its nootropic potentiality might be attributed to its anticholinesterase property.

BACKGROUND: Different physiological, social and psychological factors contribute to nutritional risk in elderly population. Elderly women residing at old age homes are particularly susceptible. OBJECTIVES: To find out psychological and financial factors, if any, associated with malnutrition and risk of malnutrition. METHODS: A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted on 200 residents belonging to > 65 years age group of nine old age homes selected randomly among eighteen old age homes located at south suburban areas of Kolkata from September 2010 to April 2011 using a pre-designed, pilot tested schedule containing Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) Scale and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Intergroup comparison was performed using chi-square test.The study was approved by Institutional Ethics Committee of All India Institute of Hygiene & Public Health, Kolkata,India. Written informed consent was taken from each study participant. RESULTS: Among 158 'possibly malnourished' women, 114 (57%) were 'at risk of malnutrition' and 44 (22%) were malnourished according to MNA. Psychological stress was present among 44% of 'at risk of malnutrition' and 56% 'malnourished' population (df=1, x2= 28.852, p<0.001). About 77% of women having moderate depression were 'at risk of malnutrition' whereas 52% of women having severe depression were 'malnourished' (df =2, x2= 23.769, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: High proportion of 'at risk malnutrition' and 'malnutrition' associated with presence of psychological stress and different grades of depression were the major areas of concern.

ABSTRACT

HIV/AIDS is a new epidemic in current century. Predominant route of transmission is sexual. Virtually all systems are affected either directly by virus or by oppurtunistic infections or by malignancy. Neurological complications may occur at any stage of disease. Clinical manifestations may be acute, subacute or chronic. Presentation and diagnosis are often confusing. Central nervous system toxoplasmosis and tuberculous meningitis are commonest opportunistic infections in advanced HIV patients. Patients frequently present with focal neurodeficit. Mortality is high i.e., 13 (54%) out of 24 cases of opportunistic infectious in the study carried out at the SSKM Hospital during the period January 2005 to December 2006.

Eugenia jambolana Lam., Myrtaceae, is a widely distributed and traditionally well known plant in India. The root bark of the plant was extracted with ethanol and then successively fractionated into petroleum ether fraction, chloroform fraction, n-butanol fraction and methanol fraction. The extract and fractions of the plant material were evaluated for the antinociceptive activity by acetic acid-induced writhing test and formalin-induced nociception test, and anti-inflammatory activity was screened by carrageenan-induced rat paw edema, cotton pellet induced granuloma formation and adjuvant induced arthritis in rat models. The test materials showed the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effect in dose dependent manner and the petroleum ether fraction was found to be most potent among the test materials. At 400 mg/kg b.w., p.o. dose petroleum ether fraction significantly inhibited 54.28% writhing response and 73.77% formalin induced nociception in mice. The fraction with same dose showed significant 79.31% inhibition of carrageenan-induced rat paw edema, 57.78% anti-proliferative effect and 77.93% inhibition of adjuvant induced arthritis. The bioactive petroleum ether fraction was then subjected to column chromatography which led to isolate three compounds, namely, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol and lupeol. These compounds were characterized and identified by IR, ¹H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectroscopy.
