ABSTRACT

The application of modern techniques for different types of massage and manual therapy is associated with the exposure of the paravetrebral points. The knowledge of pain threshold values at these points is of great practical significance. AIM: The objective of the present study was to obtain the statistical characteristics of the individual pressure pain threshold (PPT) for the healthy women and patients presenting with minor disturbances of spinal motion segments (SMS) at the trigger points on the back. The secondary objective was to estimate the dependence of the PPT parameters on a variety of conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two groups of female volunteers (students of the South Ural State Humanitarian Pedagogical University aged 19-21 years) were formed, one composed of the girls in the quiescent state (group 1, n=45), the other comprised of the girls in the state of emotional agitation and prepared for physical activity (group 2, n=105). Each group was split into two sub-groups depending on the presence or absence of complaints about the state of the SMS. PPT was evaluated in terms of kg/cm2 with the use of the Wagner FPX algometer (USA) at 3 paired paravertebral points localized at different levels: the second and third lumbar vertebrae (LII-LIII); the ninth-to-tenth thoracic vertebrae (DIÐ¥-DÐ¥), the seventh cervical, and first thoracic vertebrae (CVII-DI); as well as in pairs on the trapezius muscles in their upper parts. The height, weight, and body mass index of the participants in the study were measured. RESULTS: The PPTs values at the selected points on the back were log-normally distributed. The minimum values were measured on the trapezoidal muscles (about 2 kg/cm2) and the maximum ones in the lumbar spineregion (up to 7 kg/cm2). Complaints about the condition of SMS in group 1 were associated with the decrease of the PPT values at the paravertebral points on the neck and the lower back. No decrease of the PPT values in connection with the complaints was documented in the patients of group 2. The PPT values determined in the women of group 2 were statistically higher than in those of group 1 at all points studied and in all the subgroups; the differences ranged from 20% to 40%. The PPTs values at different points of the back correlated significantly between each other (Spearman correlation coefficient 0.6-0.9, p<0.001). In all the groups statistically significant asymmetry of the PPT values was documented (Kruskal-Wallis test, p<0.05); the right-side PPT values were lower than the left-side ones, with the difference amounting to 2-8%. CONCLUSION: The conditions of PPT measurements at the paravertebral points have a significant impact on the resultant values, being higher when the subject is ready for performing the physical exercises. The complaints about the state of the SMS are associated with the decrease in the PPT values that are lower on the right side of the body than on its left side.

ABSTRACT

The aim of our experimental research was to study the impact of radio frequency electromagnetic fields (RF EMF) on the reproductive function of male and female mice of CBA in 2 models of exposure, as well as on the morphofunctional state of progeny of irradiated animals. It was found that RF EMF under conditions of repeated short-term exposures (within 5 days for 10 minutes at PES 1.2 mW/cm2) affects the course of pregnancy in female mice, the number of litters, fertility and preservation of offspring, morphometric characteristics of the offspring of experimental animals at different models of irradiation (exposure of animals to RF EMF prior to mating and during pregnancy).

ABSTRACT

The paper presents the summary and the analysis of the results from a long-term monitoring of 90Sr specific activity in water of the lentic lakes Uruskul, L. Ighish, Kuyanysh and Travyanoye situated in Chelyabinsk Oblast on the East-Urals Radioactive Trace which was formed due to the 1957 accident at the Mayak PA. The data of measurements conducted over a 50-year period were approximated based on a function representing a sum of two (or three) exponents. The results of the analysis allowed us to study the peculiarities of reduction in the specific activity of 90Sr in the lakes of interest, and to obtain prognostic assessment of the development of the radioecological situation in these water reservoirs for the time period up to 2017. Presented in the paper are also data on the current levels of 90Sr and 137Cs specific activity in water of the lakes Uruskul, L. and S. Ighish, Kuyanysh, Travyanoye and Shablish. The estimates of the current reserves of these radionuclides are provided. Was shown that these lakes can be returned to the production use.

ABSTRACT

The kinetics, proliferation and differentiation potentials of hemopoietic stem cells (CFUs) of bone marrow and spleen were investigated in CBA-line mice in the early period (1-30 days) of chronic gamma-irradiation at a dose rate of 0.16 Gy/day to attain a cumulative dose of 4.8 Gy. The results of the experimental study showed the prevalent maintenance of productivity of granulocytic and erythrocytic hemopoietic cell series within the range of reference values, persistent inhibition of the megakaryocytic series (in terms of all hemopoiesis parameters of interest), more marked suppression of the population of polypotential CFUs in the bone marrow as compared with that in the spleen. The obtained results indicated that the mechanisms of hemopoiesis compensation at stem cell pool level were as follows: the increase in proliferation potency of erythrocytic and in polypotential precursors, the rise in the proportion of granulocytic precursors in the real differentiation potential of CFUs, and the processes of repopulation manifested with different intensity in all stem cell populations under study. For maintenance of the necessary productivity of CFUs in each of hemopoietic cell series, consecutively or simultaneously, several compensatory-adaptive mechanisms are started, which allows the avoidance of a sharp competition between hemopoietic cell series under the conditions of stem cell pool depopulation, and preservation of the hemopoiesis as a whole.

ABSTRACT

The research findings summarized in the paper include data on the radioecological conditions in two lakes (Large Ighish and Small Ighish) located on the East Urals Radioactive Trace. The focus of the study was on the chemical composition of water and bottom sediments, as well as on the specific features of 90Sr and of 137Cs distribution and the forms in which they occur in silts. Coefficients of radionuclide accumulation in the bottom deposits of the lakes of interest were estimated. A conclusion was drawn about the dependences influencing radionuclide distribution by layers of the lake bottom sediments.

ABSTRACT

It was investigated the functional status of stem cell pool (CFUs) of bone marrow, spleen and peripheral blood in mice (CBA) in early (1-30 days) and late (180-360 days) period after acute intake of 90Sr (29.6 kBq/g). Cumulative dose in red bone marrow due to incorporated 90Sr was 0.98-87.7 Gy. The kinetics, proliferative and differentiative potential of stem hemopoietic cells (CFUs) and productivity of hemopoietic tissues were significantly influenced by dose rate, absorbed dose and degree of suppresssion of bone marrow functions. The obtained results indicated that the sarcomogenous doses of 90Sr (29.6 kBq/g) resulted in realization of compensatory reactions in hemopoietic stem cell pool to support the life ability of irradiated animals: higher proliferative potential of CFUs and its repopulation, redistribution of cell subpopulations during differentiation and activation of spleens hemopoiesis.

ABSTRACT

Data on the current radioecological status of lake Bolshoi Igish in the Middle Ural are presented in the paper. The lake is situated on the central axis of the East-Urals radioactive trace which was formed as a result of the 1957 nuclear accident at the Mayak Production Association. The distribution of 90Sr and 137Cs in the major components of the water basin is shown. Seasonal dynamics of the specific activity of radionuclides in water and in bottom deposits has been investigated. The current community of the higher water plant species has been studied. The paper discusses the concentration of 90Sr and 137Cs in the macrophyts of lake Bolshoi Igish depending on their species.

ABSTRACT

After acute intake of 90Sr the changes of d-9 CFUs number in mice (CBA) bone marrow, spleen and peripheral blood were investigated. The obtained results indicated similar quantitative changes in bone marrow and spleen CFUs on exposure to the 90Sr when radiation doses did not cause the decrease in life-time (1.11 kBq/g). Sarcomogeneous doses of 90Sr (29.6 kBq/g) resulted in drastic changes of hemopoietic system: spleen haematopoiesis activation and suppression of bone marrow functions. On the first day after 90Sr injection (29.6 kBq/g) the increase in number of peripheral blood CFUs (circulating pool) was observed.

ABSTRACT

The paper presents the results of experimental studies on the kinetics and proliferative potential of hemopoietic stem cells in CBA-line mice under the conditions of chronic gamma-exposure at a dose rate of 0.16 Gy/day until the cumulative dose of 43.2 Gy was reached. It was possible based on the exo-colonization test to trace the status of the stem pool in the bone marrow and spleen. The study included an assessment of the proliferative and differentiating potentials of CFUs in the hemopoiesis components of interest. The observations conducted at late times of chronic radiation exposure (at days 180-270) allowed to identify a new status of the hemopoietic system which is characterized by activation of CFUs proliferation and redistribution of cell subpopulations at differentiation stage.

ABSTRACT

The concentration of nucleic acids in the gastrocnemius muscle of Wistar rats was measured during 60-day hypokinesia and 30-day recovery periods. The data obtained indicate that this hypokinetic model leads to an arrest of muscle growth and inhibition of the age-related accumulation of nucleic acids in the gastrocnemius muscle. The content of DNA and RNA genetic matrixes largely depends on the muscle activity. Normalization of the motor function results in an activation of genetic mechanisms of biosynthesis regulation, acceleration of reparative processes and recovery of muscular activity.
