ABSTRACT

SARS-CoV-2 RNA interacts with host factors to suppress interferon responses and simultaneously induces cytokine release to drive the development of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, how SARS-CoV-2 hijacks host RNAs to elicit such imbalanced immune responses remains elusive. Here, we analyzed SARS-CoV-2 RNA in situ structures and interactions in infected cells and patient lung samples using RIC-seq. We discovered that SARS-CoV-2 RNA forms 2,095 potential duplexes with the 3' UTRs of 205 host mRNAs to increase their stability by recruiting RNA-binding protein YBX3 in A549 cells. Disrupting the SARS-CoV-2-to-host RNA duplex or knocking down YBX3 decreased host mRNA stability and reduced viral replication. Among SARS-CoV-2-stabilized host targets, NFKBIZ was crucial for promoting cytokine production and reducing interferon responses, probably contributing to cytokine storm induction. Our study uncovers the crucial roles of RNA-RNA interactions in the immunopathogenesis of RNA viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 and provides valuable host targets for drug development.

ABSTRACT

The prediction of metabolite-protein interactions (MPIs) plays an important role in plant basic life functions. Compared with the traditional experimental methods and the high-throughput genomics methods using statistical correlation, applying heterogeneous graph neural networks to the prediction of MPIs in plants can reduce the cost of manpower, resources, and time. However, to the best of our knowledge, applying heterogeneous graph neural networks to the prediction of MPIs in plants still remains under-explored. In this work, we propose a novel model named heterogeneous neighbor contrastive graph attention network (HNCGAT), for the prediction of MPIs in Arabidopsis. The HNCGAT employs the type-specific attention-based neighborhood aggregation mechanism to learn node embeddings of proteins, metabolites, and functional-annotations, and designs a novel heterogeneous neighbor contrastive learning framework to preserve heterogeneous network topological structures. Extensive experimental results and ablation study demonstrate the effectiveness of the HNCGAT model for MPI prediction. In addition, a case study on our MPI prediction results supports that the HNCGAT model can effectively predict the potential MPIs in plant.

ABSTRACT

Despite the great potential of CRISPR-based detection, it has not been competitive with other market diagnostics for on-site and in-home testing. Here we dissect the rate-limiting factors that undermine the performance of Cas12b- and Cas13a-mediated detection. In one-pot testing, Cas12b interferes with loop-mediated isothermal amplification by binding to and cleaving the amplicon, while Cas13a directly degrades the viral RNA, reducing its amplification. We found that the protospacer-adjacent motif-interacting domain engineered Cas12b accelerated one-pot testing with 10-10,000-fold improved sensitivity, and detected 85 out of 85 SARS-CoV-2 clinical samples with a sensitivity of 0.5 cp µl-1, making it superior to wild-type Cas12b. In parallel, by diminishing the interference of Cas13a with viral RNA, the optimized Cas13a-based assay detected 86 out of 87 SARS-CoV-2 clinical samples at room temperature in 30 min with a sensitivity of 0.5 cp µl-1. The relaxed reaction conditions and improved performance of CRISPR-based assays make them competitive for widespread use in pathogen detection.

ABSTRACT

Phase microscopy that records the bandlimited image and its Fourier image simultaneously (BIFT) is a phase retrieval method with unique and rapid convergence. In this paper, we present a single-exposure quantitative differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy based on BIFT method. The contrasts of the recorded DIC image and its Fourier image, analyzed by simulation and experiment, can be largely improved by the initial phase difference between two sheared lights (bias), however their trends with biases are opposite. By adding the optimized bias with the compromise of the contrasts in image and Fourier space, the phase sensitivity can be improved than BIFT method only. We have experimentally demonstrated that a sample of 25 nm height can be successfully recovered from a single exposure. The presented single-exposure quantitative DIC microscopy provides a promising technique for real-time phase imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer (BC) incidence has been increasing among Asian-Americans (AsAms); recent data suggest these patients are less likely to undergo postmastectomy breast reconstruction (PMBR) compared to non-Asian women. Historically, AsAm BC patients are reported in aggregate, masking heterogeneity within this population. We aim to identify patterns of postmastectomy reconstruction among disaggregated AsAm BC patients at our institution. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for BC patients who underwent mastectomy between 2017 and 2021. Patient demographic and clinical information was collected including self-reported race/ethnicity and reconstruction at time of mastectomy. Self-identified Asian patients were disaggregated into East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, and 'Asian Other.' We examined rates of reconstruction between the different races and the disaggregated Asian subgroups. Univariable and multivariable analysis was performed to examine patient factors associated with PMBR. RESULTS: Six hundred and five patients met inclusion criteria. Forty seven percent of patients identified as Asian, 36% of which as East Asian. Forty four percent of all patients underwent PMBR. Southeast Asian and South Asian women were least likely to undergo reconstruction, while Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black women were most likely to pursue PMBR (P = 0.020). On multivariable analysis, Hispanic, non-Hispanic White, and non-Hispanic Black women were more likely to undergo reconstruction compared to Asian women. Other factors associated with reconstruction were coverage with private insurance and diagnosis of noninvasive disease. CONCLUSIONS: Rates of PMBR are lower among AsAms than non-Asian patients and vary between Asian ethnic subgroups. Further investigation is needed to identify patterns of reconstruction among the disaggregated AsAm population to address disparities.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The negative pressure selectable for the wet-suction technique remains uncertain. The aim was to investigate the quality of sampling and diagnostic accuracy with solid lesions by 5 mL and 10 mL negative pressure with wet-suction techniques. METHODS: This is a single-center, crossover, randomized controlled trial conducted with a random sampling technique. In all, 160 patients consecutively undergoing EUS-FNA for solid lesions were randomized in a ratio of 1:1 into 2 groups, the 5 mL and 10 mL negative pressure wet-suction group. The main outcome was to compare the sample quality between the 2 groups. The secondary outcome was to compare the histologic and cytologic diagnostic accuracy of solid lesions. RESULTS: Pancreatic (n=129) and nonpancreatic (n=27) lesions from 156 lesions were examined. The sample quality concluding cellularity, adequacy, integrity, and blood contamination were comparable between the 2 groups. However, in subgroup analysis, we found 19G FNA provided more integrity of specimen in 5 mL than in 10 mL group (100% vs. 82.9%, P=0.025). In contrast, this benefit was not noteworthy in the 22G FNA subgroup. And there was no statistically significant in histologic (87.82% vs. 87.18%, P=1.000) and cytologic (78.85% vs. 80.77%, P=0.778) accuracy between 5 mL and 10 mL groups. CONCLUSION: When using the wet-suction technique, 5 mL and 10 mL negative pressure offer equivalent sample quality and diagnostic accuracy. However, the 19G FNA can obtain better sample quality with 5 mL negative pressure than 10 mL negative pressure.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the association between white matter changes and ventricular expansion in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) based on diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI). METHODS: We included 32 patients with iNPH who underwent DSI using a 3T MRI scanner. The lateral ventricles were manually segmented, and ventricular volumes were measured. Two methods were utilised in the study: manual region-of-interest (ROI) delineation and tract diffusion profile analysis. General fractional anisotropy (GFA) and fractional anisotropy (FA) were extracted in different white matter regions, including the bilateral internal capsule (anterior and posterior limbs) and corpus callosum (body, genu, and splenium) with manual ROI delineation. The 18 main tracts in the brain of each patient were extracted; the diffusion metrics of 100 equidistant nodes on each fibre were calculated, and Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to determine the correlation between diffusion measures and ventricular volume of iNPH patients. RESULTS: The GFA and FA of all ROI showed no significant correlation with lateral ventricular volume. However, in the tract diffusion profile analysis, lateral ventricular volume was positively correlated with part of the cingulum bundle, left corticospinal tract, and bilateral thalamic radiation posterior, whereas it was negatively correlated with the bilateral cingulum parahippocampal (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The effect of ventricular enlargement in iNPH on some white matter fibre tracts around the ventricles was limited and polarizing, and most white matter fibre tract integrity changes were not associated with ventricular enlargement; this reflects that multiple pathological mechanisms may have been combined to cause white matter alterations in iNPH.

ABSTRACT

Nickel-rich layered oxides are envisaged as one of the most promising alternative cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, considering their capabilities to achieve ultrahigh energy density at an affordable cost. Nonetheless, with increasing Ni content in the cathodes comes a severe extent of Ni4+ redox side reactions on the interface, leading to fast capacity decay and structural stability fading over extended cycles. Herein, dual additives of bis(vinylsulfonyl)methane (BVM) and lithium difluorophosphate (LiDFP) are adopted to synergistically generate the F-, P-, and S-rich passivation layer on the cathode, and the Ni4+ activity and dissolution at high voltage are restricted. The sulfur-rich layer formed by the polymerization of BVM, combined with the Li3PO4 and LiF phases derived from LiDFP, alleviates the problems of increased impedance, cracks, and an irreversible H2-H3 phase transition. Consequently, the Ni-rich LiNixM1-xO2 (x > 0.95) button half-cell cycled in LiDFP + BVM electrolyte exhibits a significant discharging capacity of 181.4 mAh g-1 at 1 C (1 C = 200 mA g-1) with retention of 83.7% after 100 cycles, surpassing the performance of the commercial electrolyte (160.7 mAh g-1) with retention of 53.3%. Remarkably, the NCM95||graphite pouch cell exhibits a remarkable capacity retention of 95.5% after 200 cycles. This work inspires the rational design of electrolyte additives for ultrahigh-energy batteries with nickel-rich layered oxide cathodes.

ABSTRACT

The electrochemical conversion of nitrate pollutants into value-added ammonia (NH3) is an appealing alternative synthetic route for sustainable NH3 production. However, the development of the electrocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia reduction reaction (NO3RR) has been hampered by unruly reactants and products at the interface and the accompanied sluggish kinetic rate. In this work, a built-in positive valence space is successfully constructed over FeCu nanocrystals to rationally regulate interfacial component concentrations and positively shift the chemical equilibrium. With positive valence Cu optimizing the active surface, the space between the stern and shear layers becomes positive, which is able to continuously attract the negatively charged NO3- reactant and repulse the positively charged NH4+ product even under high current density, thus significantly boosting the NO3RR kinetics. The system with a built-in positive valence space affords an ampere-level NO3RR performance with the highest NH3 yield rate of 150.27 mg h-1 mg-1 at -1.3 V versus RHE with an outstanding NH3 current density of 189.53 mA cm-2, as well as a superior Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 97.26% at -1.2 V versus RHE. The strategy proposed here underscores the importance of interfacial concentration regulation and can find wider applicability in other electrochemical syntheses suffering from sluggish kinetics.

BACKGROUND: Atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH) is typically diagnosed via needle core biopsy (NCB) and is commonly removed surgically in light of upgrade to malignancy rates of 1%-5%. As studies on radiographic outcomes of ALH managed by active surveillance (AS) are limited, we investigated the upgrade rates of surgically excised ALH as well as radiographic progression during AS. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 125 patients with 127 ALH lesions diagnosed via NCB at Weill Cornell Medicine from 2015 to 2021 were included. The upgrade rate to cancer was determined for patients who had surgical management ≤6 months after biopsy. Among patients with ALH managed by AS, we investigated radiographic progression on 6-month interval imaging. RESULTS: Of 127 ALH lesions, 75% (n = 95) were immediately excised and 25% (n = 32) were observed under AS. The upgrade rate of immediately excised ALH was 2.1% (n = 2; invasive ductal carcinoma [IDC], T1N0 and IDC, and T1Nx). In the AS cohort, no ALH lesions progressed radiographically during the follow-up period of 22.5 months (median), with all remaining stable (50%, n = 16), resolving (47%, n = 15), or decreasing in size (3%, n = 1). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, NCB-diagnosed ALH had a low upgrade to malignancy rate (2.1%), and no ALH lesions managed by AS progressed radiographically during the follow-up period of 22.5 months. These results support AS as the favorable option for patients with pure ALH on biopsy, with surgical excision for lesions that progress on surveillance.

ABSTRACT

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most prevalent human cancers. ARL-6, a member of the ADP ribosylation factor (like) (ARF) protein family, has gained attention as a potential therapeutic target in various malignancies and a prognostic biomarker. However, its specific roles in HCC, both prognostically and biochemically, remain largely unclear. Methods: To examine the functional relevance of ARL-6 in HCC, we acquired data from GEPIA, UALCAN, TIMER, TCGA, GeneMANIA, and Metascape databases. Then, we conducted immunohistochemistry on a replication sample comprising 26 HCC specimens to assess the efficacy of the ARL-6 gene. To unravel the mechanistic intricacies, we employed diverse assays such as the cell counting kit 8 (CCK8), flow cytometry, and transwell invasion assessment. Results: Our findings demonstrated the mRNA expression of ARL-6 was significantly upregulated in HCC compared to normal tissue, as evidenced by comprehensive database analysis. Immunohistochemistry further revealed that ARL-6 expression was remarkably higher in HCC than in para-carcinoma tissues. Moreover, ARL-6 expression exhibited noteworthy variations across diverse LIHC characteristics, including sample type, histological subtype, TP53 mutation status, nodal metastatic status, and cancer stage. In addition, high transcriptional levels of ARL-6 were correlated with diminished overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in HCC patients. Furthermore, our study indicated positive correlations between ARL-6 expression levels and the activities of tumor-infiltrating immune cells such as B cells, myeloid dendritic cells, macrophages, neutrophils, CD8+T cells, and CD4+T cells. Substantiating our findings, database analysis uncovered additional evidence of ARL-6 gene co-expression and its functional significance in HCC cases. Finally, we demonstrated the involvement of the ARL-6 gene in HCC cell invasion, proliferation, and apoptosis. Conclusions: In conclusion, our investigation sheds light on the pivotal role of ARL-6 in influencing HCC prognosis and treatment by modulating the biological activities of tumor cells. These discoveries hold promise for the development of predictive biomarkers and novel therapeutic avenues for affected patients.

BACKGROUND: Environmental ultraviolet radiation has deleterious effects on humans, including sunburn and immune perturbations. These immune changes are involved in skin carcinogenesis. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether nicotinamide riboside and/or pterostilbene administered systemically inhibits inflammatory and immune effects of exposure to mid-range ultraviolet radiation. METHODS: To examine UVB radiation-induced inflammatory effects, mice were fed standard chow/water, 0.04% pterostilbene in chow and 0.2% nicotinamide riboside in drinking water, diet with nicotinamide riboside alone, or diet with pterostilbene alone. After 4 weeks, mice were exposed to UVB radiation (3500 J/m2), and 24-/48-h ear swelling was assessed. We also asked if each agent or the combination inhibits UVB radiation suppression of contact hypersensitivity in two models. Mice were fed standard diet/water or chow containing 0.08% pterostilbene, water with 0.4% nicotinamide riboside, or both for 4 weeks. Low-dose: Half the mice in each group were exposed on the depilated dorsum to UVB radiation (1700 J/m2) daily for 4 days, whereas half were mock-irradiated. Mice were immunized on the exposed dorsum to dinitrofluorobenzene 4 h after the last irradiation, challenged 7 days later on the ears with dinitrofluorobenzene, and 24-h ear swelling assessed. High dose: Mice were treated similarly except that a single dose of 10,000 J/m2 of radiation was administered and immunization was performed on the unirradiated shaved abdomen 3 days later. RESULTS: Nicotinamide riboside and pterostilbene together inhibited UVB-induced skin swelling more than either alone. Pterostilbene alone and both given together could inhibit UVB-induced immune suppression in both the low-dose and high-dose models while nicotinamide riboside alone was more effective in the low-dose model than the high-dose model. CONCLUSION: Nicotinamide riboside and pterostilbene have protective effects against UVB radiation-induced tissue swelling and immune suppression.

Background: The concept of subhealth, defined as a state between health and illness characterized by diminished vitality and adaptability, is emerging as a significant concern, particularly among nursing staff. In Shaanxi Province, there is a notable prevalence of subhealth conditions among nurses, influenced by various factors, including lifestyle, work environment, and psychological stress. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the level of subhealth status among nursing staff in Shaanxi hospitals, identify the primary causes and risk factors affecting their subhealth, and propose relevant countermeasures. The goal is to provide a scientific basis for developing strategies to enhance nursing staff's physical and mental well-being. Methods: A comprehensive questionnaire survey was conducted among 1068 nursing staff members from different hospitals in Shaanxi Province. The survey assessed various dimensions of subhealth, including physical, psychological, and social aspects. Data were analyzed to determine the relationships between subhealth status and factors like exercise frequency, dietary habits, smoking and alcohol consumption, occupational injuries, work situation, and stress levels. Results: Most respondents were female, aged between 21 and 40 years. The study found no significant gender-related differences in subhealth scores. Key factors affecting subhealth included physical exercise, dietary habits, occupational stress, and work conditions. The data revealed higher physical subhealth but lower psychological subhealth among nursing staff compared to regional norms. Notable relationships were observed between lifestyle choices, work-related factors, and the subhealth status of nursing staff. Conclusion: The subhealth status of nursing staff in Shaanxi hospitals is influenced by a combination of lifestyle, occupational, and psychological factors. The study underscores the need for targeted interventions focusing on lifestyle modifications, stress management, and improved work conditions to enhance the overall health status of nursing staff. This research provides valuable insights for healthcare policymakers and administrators to develop effective strategies for managing subhealth conditions among nursing professionals.

Recent evidence has pinpointed a key role of the microbiome in human respiratory health and disease. However, significant knowledge gaps still exist regarding the connection between bacterial communities and adverse effects caused by particulate matters (PMs). Here, we characterized the bacterial microbiome along different airway sites in occupational pneumoconiosis (OP) patients. The sequencing data revealed that OP patients exhibited distinct dysbiosis in the composition and function of the respiratory microbiota. To different extents, there was an overall increase in the colonization of microbiota, such as Streptococcus, implying a possible intrusion pathway provided by exogenous PMs. Compared to those of healthy subjects, unhealthy living habits (i.e., smoking) had a greater impact on microbiome changes in OP patients. Importantly, the associations between the bacterial community and disease indicators indicated that specific bacterial species, including Prevotella, Actinobacillus, and Leptotrichia, might be surrogate markers of OP disease progression. Collectively, our results highlighted the potential participation of the bacterial microbiota in the pathogenesis of respiratory diseases and helped in the discovery of microbiome-based diagnostics for PM-induced disorders.

Indoor cases of Tetranychus cinnabarinus displaying resistance have been documented, but the resistance level in field populations remains unexplored in China. This study delves into the resistance dynamics of T. cinnabarinus to fenpropathrin in various field populations across China, a pressing concern in contemporary agricultural pest control. The conventional bioassay and amplicon sequencing reveal a notable absence of significant fenpropathrin resistance in field populations, contrasting with known resistance in indoor cases. Current study highlights the limitations of traditional bioassays in detecting early-stage resistance and underscores the nuanced capabilities and constraints of amplicon sequencing in resistance gene frequency analysis. By employing an integrated approach, we combined dose-response bioassays, amplicon sequencing, and statistical modeling to assess resistance levels and investigate underlying genetic factors. The model with empirical data indicates that a 5% mutation frequency represents the threshold before resistance emerges. However, the detection of the kdr mutation in certain populations ranging from 0 to 1.2%, signals an early looming threat of future resistance emergence. Additionally, we further assessed a specific dsRNA targeting VGSC genes at two concentrations (10 ng/µL and 100 ng/µL), both inducing substantial mortality by silencing target genes effectively. The exploration of RNA interference (RNAi) as a novel, more environmentally friendly pest control measure opens new avenues, despite the ongoing challenge of resistance evolution. Overall, this study underscores the necessity for evolving pest management strategies, integrating advanced biotechnological approaches with traditional methods, to effectively counter pesticide resistance and ensure sustainable agricultural productivity.

ABSTRACT

The roles of plateau pika (Ochotona coronae) in the Tibetan Plateau are often controversial, because it is often regarded as a destructive pest or an ecosystem engineer. Here a meta-analysis using 72 paired observations was conducted to examine whether the impacts of plateau pika on environmental quality (i.e., plant and soil properties) depend on population density in the Tibetan Plateau. Pika population density was used as a proxy for disturbance intensity. The pika disturbance intensity was divided into five groups based on the number of burrows, including low disturbance intensity (LD) (9-30 burrows per ha), medium disturbance intensity (MD) (31-100 burrows per ha), high disturbance intensity (HD) (101-170 burrows per ha), extreme disturbance intensity (ED) (171-240 burrows per ha) and uncontrolled (or excessive) disturbance intensity (UD) (>241 burrows per ha). Given that sample sizes in some of the groups are small (especially for the HD), we further pooled the disturbance groups including the LD-MD and HD-UD. Overall, relative to control (i.e., no disturbing), there was a great increase (80.3%) in aboveground biomass under the LD-MD, whereas a decrease of 41.1% occurred under the HD-UD. At the same time, plant coverage, species richness, height, and belowground biomass greatly decreased only in the HD-UD. Furthermore, the effect size of plant coverage, species richness, and aboveground biomass also declined with pika burrow density significantly. With regard to soil properties, there was a significant increase in soil organic carbon, ammonium nitrogen, and soil organic carbon stock under the LD-MD, whereas a decrease under the HD-UD. In addition, soil total nitrogen, total potassium, and nitrate nitrogen increased at the LD-MD and HD-UD. Nevertheless, the effect size of these soil properties (with >20 observations) was not related to pika burrow density. In summary, there is an implication that the low and moderate disturbance of pikas is beneficial to maintain and promote ecosystem functioning in the Tibetan grasslands. In the future pikas' eradication policy should be reconsidered in alpine grassland management.

ABSTRACT

Rapid detection of heparin-binding protein (HBP) is essential for timely intervention in sepsis cases. Current detection techniques are usually antibody-based immunological methods, which have certain problems, such as complexity and slow detection, and fall short in meeting the urgency of clinical needs. The application of an aptamer can address these concerns well. In this study, HBP-specific DNA aptamers were screened first. Among which, Apt-01, Apt-02, and Apt-13 had a high affinity for HBP, exhibiting impressive KD values of 3.42, 1.44, and 1.04 nmol/L, respectively. Then, the aptamer of HBP and its partially complementary primer probe were combined to form double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) and synthesize a circular DNA template. The template is complementary to the primer probe, but due to the presence of dsDNA, ExoIII cleaves C2-13 as an RCA primer probe, rendering the template unable to recognize the primer probe and preventing the RCA reaction from proceeding. When the target is present, it competes with the adapter for recognition and releases C2-13, exposing its 3' end. After initiating the RCA at room temperature and reacting with SYBR GreenII at 37 °C for 20 min, fluorescence changes can be observed and quantitatively analyzed at a 530 nm wavelength, achieving quantitative biological analysis. Apt-01 was used to develop a fluorescent biosensor for HBP detection, which exhibited a good linear range (0.01 nmol/L to 10 nmol/L) and detection limit (0.0056 nmol/L). This advancement holds the potential to lay a solid groundwork for pioneering sensitive and specific methods for HBP detection and to significantly enhance the diagnostic processes for sepsis.

ABSTRACT

Ongoing rapid urbanization has triggered significant changes in land use, rendering landscape patterns adversely impacted and certain habitat patches degraded. Ecological networks have consequently contracted overall. As such, an investigation into how land-use landscape patterns and ecological networks change over time and space is of major significance for ecological restoration and regional sustainability. Taking Xuzhou Planning Area as a case study, we examined spatiotemporal changes and features of the landscape pattern by employing the land-use change degree, the land-use transition matrix, and quantified landscape pattern indices. An ecological network analysis, which studies the changes in network connectivity and robustness, as well as their causes and contributors, was undertaken to probe into the features and trends of spatiotemporal changes in the land-use landscape pattern and ecological network amid expeditious urbanization. Analysis results unveiled the following: (1) From 1985 to 2020, there was a decline in the area of farmland, forest, and grassland, accompanied by an increase in land for construction, water bodies, and unused land. The southwestern research area witnessed farmland substantially give way to land for construction for this period, and the most dramatic change in land use occurred between 2000 and 2010. (2) The area of dominant patches in the research area shrank, along with more fragmented, complex landscapes. The land for construction was emerging as the dominant landscape by area, whereas patches of farmland, forest, grassland, and water bodies became less connected. (3) The ecological network was densely linked in the northeast, with sparser connections in the southwest. Spatial shrinkage was observed in the research area's southwestern and central ecological corridors. Overall, the number of ecological sources and corridors rose and subsequently dropped before a rebound. (4) The ecological network grew more connected and robust from 1985 through 1990, as portions of farmland were converted into water bodies, which led to an increase in ecological sources. Given a reduction in ecological sources and corridors in the southwestern and central regions between 1990 and 2010, network connectivity and robustness declined, which was reversed from 2010 onward with the addition of two ecological sources-Pan'an Lake and Dugong Lake. With an optimal ecological network in 1990, however, it deteriorated significantly by 2010. The research area saw the minimum value of its network connectivity indices of network stability index (α), evenness index (ß), and connectivity index (γ), in 2010, when its ecological network was highly fragmented and vulnerable, attributing to a strong contrast between the maximal connected subgraph's relative size and connectivity robustness. The research findings can lay scientific groundwork for addressing ecological issues, restoring landscape patterns, and developing ecological networks amid urbanization.

ABSTRACT

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO), also known as oncogenic osteomalacia, is very rare, with about 1000 reported cases globally. Removing most TIO culprit tumors requires the evaluation and intervention of orthopedic doctors. However, orthopedic doctors often have a poor understanding of the optical treatment of TIO due to its rarity. In addition, most TIO patients lack specific clinical manifestations. Also, the clinical localization and qualitative diagnosis of TIO are difficult and thus can easily be misdiagnosed and mistreated. Furthermore, the true incidence rate of TIO may be underestimated. Although many breakthroughs have been made in exploring the pathogenesis, clinical diagnosis, and treatment of TIO, rational and standardized orthopedic surgical treatment experience summary and sorting for TIO patients are lacking. In this article, the recent experience and progress in the field of orthopedic surgical treatment for TIO globally have been summarized, providing a theoretical basis and new clinical practice guidance for the rational treatment of TIO patients.

ABSTRACT

Traditional absorbent pads are composed of hard-to-degrade polyethylene film and non-woven bottom layer, which have the characteristic of low absorption rate, without antibacterial effect. The objective of this study is to fabricate a novel superabsorbent and antibacterial aerogel, which consists of whey protein isolate (WPI) and chitosan (CS). The citric acid (CA) and ε-polylysine hydrochloride (ε-PLH) are incorporated into WPI/CS-based aerogel as cross-linking and antibacterial agent, respectively. The application in meat preservation as an absorbent pad is investigated. Results of water absorption, water vapor absorption and stress-strain show that aerogel comprised of 6 % WPI, 1.2 % CS, 2.0 % CA, and 2.0 % ε-PLH have the best water absorption capacity and stress. The density of WPI/CS/CA/ε-PLH aerogel is 82.7 ± 6.4 mg/cm3, and has a uniform and polyporous microstructure, resulting in superabsorbent capacity. Antibacterial rate of WPI/CS/CA/ε-PLH aerogel against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes reach around 80 %. The WPI/CS/CA/ε-PLH aerogel significantly reduces increased velocity of b⁎, pH, total volatile base nitrogen, and total viable counts and decreased velocity of L⁎ and b⁎ of chicken meat (P < 0.05). Results indicate WPI/CS/CA/ε-PLH aerogel effectively extends shelf-life of chicken meat to 7 days, and could be used as an absorbent pad in meat preservation.
