RESUMEN

AIM: The aim of the study was to identify and reflect on evidence regarding the use of simulation in nursing education. BACKGROUND: The use of simulation as a teaching strategy in nursing is expanding. It is important to check the evidence deriving from research. METHOD: Departing from a guiding question, an international literature search was undertaken between January 2008 and March 2014 in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. RESULTS: Out of 160 articles, 68.1 percent used simulated teaching to develop clinical reasoning; 31.9 percent used it to train skills. Most (about 91.8 percent) discussed positive aspects related to the use of simulation, including support for the teaching process and increased self-efficacy and self-confidence. CONCLUSION: The studies indicate that appropriate tools are needed to measure the true impact of the strategy on the teaching of nursing care and the training needed to use simulation as a teaching strategy.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Essential for the help relation, empathy is the ability to understand, share, and perceive the subjective experience of other human beings. OBJECTIVE: The objective in this non-experimental, exploratory, and descriptive research was to verify, observe, and document empathy in nursing professionals. RESEARCH DESIGN: Non-experimental, exploratory, and descriptive research. Participants and research context: the study was conducted at two large hospitals, one public and the other private, across all shifts. The sample included 159 individuals. A questionnaire was used to identify sociodemographic characteristics and the empathy inventory was applied. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: This study received approval from the Research Ethics Committee at the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing, opinion 1348/2011, and authorization from the health institutions involved. FINDINGS: The association tests demonstrated that professionals working in the night shift and in a work scale rotation scheme, older professionals, and professionals with longer professional experience are less empathetic. On the other hand, professionals working in the day shift and in a single shift are more empathetic. Other influential factors are the time on the job, education, and work shift. CONCLUSION: There is a lack of empathy studies in professional practice contexts, in human resource development programs, and throughout the professional education process.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum. Considering the high rates of syphilis in pregnancy and congenital syphilis reported in Brazil in the past, and their serious consequences, this study described the epidemiological and clinical profile of pregnant women with a confirmed diagnosis of syphilis in Campo Grande, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, from 2011 to 2017. METHODS: This is a descriptive study, based on syphilis notifications among pregnant women reported to the Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (National System of Disease Notification of Brazil). RESULTS: Over the study period, 2,056 confirmed cases of syphilis in pregnancy were reported, resulting in a crude cumulative incidence of 144.76 cases per 1,000 live-born babies. The incidence increased from 9.97 cases per 1,000 live-born babies in 2011 to 36.10 cases per 1,000 live-born babies in 2017. It was more prevalent in women who were young, of mixed race, with low educational attainment. Over one third of women were diagnosed in the first trimester of pregnancy; therefore, they were at risk of reinfection if they or their sexual partners were inadequately treated. Furthermore, syphilis was not well classified according to its clinical stage, which led to inappropriate treatments. CONCLUSIONS: Despite efforts to reduce the incidence of syphilis, syphilis during pregnancy remains a public health problem, reflecting possible inadequacies in antenatal care, especially in vulnerable populations. It is important to include sexual partners in syphilis treatment during pregnancy to prevent reinfection.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the self-confidence of nurses in the care of critically ill patients, before and after a simulated intervention. METHOD: A quasi-experimental study was carried out with 103 nurses who participated in a workshop on the care of critically ill patients in the first semester of 2016. A clinical simulation pedagogical instrument was used throughout the event, and self-confidence was assessed by the Portuguese version of the Self-confidence Scale (SCSvp). RESULTS: Most participants reported not being prepared to provide first care to critically ill patients, which was carried out during care practice. The participants presented a significant increase in self-confidence after the simulated intervention (p<0.001) in the cardiac, neurological, and respiratory dimensions. CONCLUSION: Simulation has proved to be an effective strategy for the development of individuals' self-confidence, which contributes to the improvement of skills required for professional practice.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To identify the influence of social determinants of health on the life conditions of patients who use intermittent urinary catheters. METHOD: This was a descriptive study conducted in a rehabilitation center with 243 neurogenic bladder patients who used clear intermittent urinary catheters. The study was carried out between March 2012 and October 2015, using interviews based on semi-structured instruments, and data analysis using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: Most of the patients were men, between 16 and 64 years old, single, with an elementary education level, and a monthly household income of 2 to 3 minimum wages. The results show that the social determinants of health were related to socioeconomic, demographic, and health factors. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate a complex relationship between social determinants of health and the life conditions of patients who use clean intermittent urinary catheters, presenting greater vulnerability related to some aspects of health conditions.

Desses, 47 (70,0%) eram do sexo feminino, 43 (64,1%) eram aposentados, 41 (61,1%) apresentavam ensino fundamental incompleto, 42 (62,6%) manifestaram alguma limitação física e 42 (62,6%) eram sedentários.

Identifying health and life conditions related to the loss of functionality of the elderly contributes to the construction of public policies and interventions that help them live with more autonomy and independence. In the reality of Primary Health Care (PHC), the identification of fragile elderly or those at risk of fragility needs to be simple and fast. The purpose of this study was to identify the clinical-functional vulnerability of elderly PHC users. This was a quantitative and transverse study, carried out through the application of the clinical-functional vulnerability index-20 (CFVI-20), which evaluates eight predicting domains of functional decline and death in the elderly: age, self-perception of health, activities of daily life (ADL), cognition, mood/behavior, mobility, communication, and presence of multiple comorbidities. 67 elderly people with an average age of 69.1 (± 6.9) years old were included. Of these, 47 (70.0%) were female, 43 (64.1%) were retired, 41 (61.1%) had an incomplete elementary education, 42 (62.6%) expressed some physical limitation, and 42 (62.6%) were sedentary. Everyone showed a change in at least one of the eight domains evaluated by CFVI-20, especially mobility (n = 67; 100%), cognition (n = 54; 80.5%), and mood (n = 40; 59.7%). Finally, 23 elderly (34.3%) were classified as robust, 30 (44.7%) as being at risk of fragility, and 14 (20.8%) as fragile. Most elderly evaluated were at risk of fragility or fragile. The CFVI-20 has proved to be an instrument of simple and rapid application in PHC to contribute to the identification, monitoring and management of elderly at risk of clinical-functional vulnerability.

RESUMEN

Interprofessional work revolutionizes the model of health education and practice, and requires effective communication between team members. However, although it has been discussed for more than three decades, its introduction into health courses is still a challenge. To overcome such barriers, the use of clinical simulations allows for the insertion of and reflection on issues within the real practical context. The incorporation of instruments that guide the skills necessary for interprofessional work into the work of facilitators, such as the "Performance Assessment Tools for Interprofessional Communication and Teamwork Novice" (PACTNovice), is essential. Thus, this study aimed to translate and validate the construct's content and verify the reliability of the Brazilian version of the PACT-Novice instrument in a simulated context, among students in Brazil. This is a methodological study of translation, cultural adaptation, and validation of content and reliability of the instrument, divided into Phase A - Translation and cultural validation and Phase B - Validation and reliability of the instrument. In Phase A), after analyzing the judges' assessments of the translated version, the final version of the PACT-Students instrument was reached, with a CVI index of 95.0% for all items. For Phase B, the analysis of the set of items that make up the PACT-Students and their relationship with the construct resulted in a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.891. The process of translation and validation of the PACT-Students instrument was efficient, demonstrating high reliability for its application. However, further studies are suggested to reinforce the results obtained.
