RESUMEN

We present a rare case of a patient with toluene exposure manifesting as anti-glomerular basement membrane (GBM) disease on a background of phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R)-associated membranous nephropathy. A 23-year-old man presented to the emergency department with hypertension, headache, hemoptysis, anemia, acute kidney injury, glomerular hematuria, and proteinuria. He endorsed repeated exposure to toluene-containing products while repairing dirt bikes. Serologies were positive for anti-GBM antibodies. Kidney biopsy showed crescentic glomerulonephritis with linear immunoglobulin G and granular PLA2R staining by immunofluorescence. He was initially treated with high-dose steroids, plasmapheresis, and hemodialysis for pulmonary-renal syndrome followed by oral cyclophosphamide and prednisone, which were discontinued after 3 months when follow-up biopsies confirmed little chance for renal recovery. He remained on dialysis 1 year later. This case exhibits a unique presentation of anti-GBM syndrome and underlying membranous nephropathy following repeated hydrocarbon exposure. Inhaled toxins promote recurrent localized inflammation, unmasking previously hidden epitopes. Early diagnosis and appropriate use of immunosuppressive and extracorporeal therapies are necessary to prevent morbidity and to improve survival in this rare condition.

Hypertension is among the most prevalent medical conditions globally and a major contributor to chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and death. Prevention through nonpharmacological, population-level interventions is critically needed to halt this worldwide epidemic. However, there are ongoing disagreements as to where public policy efforts should focus. Recently the Salt Substitute and Stroke Study demonstrated the efficacy of substituting table salt with potassium salt to reduce the risk of stroke, major cardiovascular events, and death. However, this sparked debate over whether sodium or potassium should be prioritized in countries where table salt substitution was less feasible. In this commentary, we summarize arguments in favor of either strategy: reduced sodium or increased potassium intake. Moreover, we discuss evidence and policy approaches related to either or combined approaches relevant to cultural context. Ultimately, there is an urgent need for policies that both reduce sodium and increase potassium intake; however, identifying a strategy that fits cultural context will be key to improve population-wide blood pressures.

Several plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) are gram-negative, and their cell viability is affected during the bio-inoculant production. Hence, formulation-drying processes provide challenges that limit the adoption of these beneficial microorganisms in sustainable agricultural production. Among delivery system strategies for gram-negative PGPB, the encapsulating cells in biopolymeric materials are emerging as a promising alternative. This research aims to evaluate the effect of additives and crosslinking agents on the survival of the consortium of Herbaspirillum frisingense AP21, Azospirillum brasilense D7, and Rhizobium leguminosarum T88 in hydrogel capsules. Three crosslinkers and diverse potential drying protectors were tested. Calcium gluconate provides notable consortium survival advantages regarding colony-forming units (CFUs) (losses of up to 4 log CFU) compared to calcium lactate and calcium chloride (up to 6 log CFU). Additives such as skimmed milk, whey protein, and Gelita® EC improve the recovery of viable cells after the drying process, demonstrating an increase in cell survival of the three bacteria by up to 4 log CFU. The combination of these substances into a capsule prototype extends the storage stability of bacterial consortium up to 3 months at 18 ± 2 °C. This study expands the knowledge for formulating gram-negative PGPB consortium, regarding the crosslinker and drying protector relationship on encapsulation processes with drying survival and further storage stability performance. Zygomycetes are ubiquitous saprophytes in natural environments which transform organic matter. Some zygomycetes of gender Mucor have attracted interest in health sector. Due to its ability as opportunistic microorganisms infecting immuno-compromised people and to the few available pharmacological treatments, the mucormycosis is receiving worldwide attention. Concerning to the pharmacological treatments, some triazole-based compounds such as fluconazole are extensively used. Nevertheless, we focused in the quinolines since they are broadly used models for the design and development of new synthetic antifungal agents. In this study, the fungistatic activity on M. circinelloides of various 2-aryl-4-aryloxyquinoline-based compounds was discovered, and in some cases, it resulted better than reference compound fluconazole. These quinoline derivatives were synthesized via the Csp2-O bond formation using diaryliodonium(III) salts chemistry. A QSAR study was carried out to quantitatively correlate the chemical structure of the tested compounds with their biological activity. Also, a docking study to identify a plausible action target of our more active quinolines was carried out. The results highlighted an increased activity with the fluorine- and nitro-containing derivatives. In light of the few mucormycosis pharmacological treatments, herein we present some non-described molecules with excellent in vitro activities and potential use in the mucormycosis treatment.

AIMS: The leaf-feeding pest Cerotoma arcuata tingomariana (Bechyné) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) produces huge economic losses in different crops. This study aimed to produce conidia by semisolid-state fermentation and to establish the insecticidal activity of two formulation prototypes based on a native Beauveria bassiana isolate for controlling this pest. METHODS AND RESULTS: A novel fabric-based semisolid-state fermentation strategy for quick and large-scale conidia production was performed and characterized. Conidia were formulated as an emulsifiable concentrate (EC) and a water-dispersible granulate (WG). Afterwards, the mortality of C. a. tingomariana adults was assessed. A conidia concentration of 2.9 × 109 conidia cm-2 was obtained after 9 days-course fermentation and a yield of 33.4 g kg-1 dry-substrate. CONCLUSIONS: The polyester fabric-based fermentation is an efficient technique for producing and collecting B. bassiana spores. Regarding LC90 , the potency analysis showed that the EC was 21-fold more potent than the non-formulated conidia, and ~ 2.6-fold more potent than the WG. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY: A high throughput fermentation based on polyester fabric as support for B. bassiana conidia production and subsequent formulation as an EC comprises a promising strategy for obtaining a bioproduct to control adults of C. a. tingomariana and other Chrysomelidae pests.

Currently there is a wide variety of collectors used in mineral processing, the xanthates being the most used in sulfides flotation. Unfortunately, it is known that xanthates are not stable compounds and their decomposition generates carbon disulfide (CS2), a substance that is considered toxic. These aspects have motivated the search for collectors that exhibit superior performance without the health, safety and environmental (HSE) concerns associated with xanthates. In this study, the chemical stability of three xanthates of different alkyl groups (sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX), sodium isopropyl xanthate (SIPX) and potassium amyl xanthate (PAX)) was evaluated by UV/Vis spectroscopy, as a function of pH and time. Similarly, the chemical stability of three chelating collectors was evaluated: sodium di-isobutyl dithiophosphinate (SDIBDTPI), benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) and octanohydroxamic acid (OHA). Likewise, the surface tension of their aqueous solutions was measured making use of the Du Noüy method, to determine the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The results showed that the xanthate UV/Vis absorption spectra reflect the presence of a chemical reaction as the pH decreases from 4 to 2.5, which results in the formation of carbon disulfide (CS2). In addition, the generation of CS2 is favored as time elapses and the pH of the solutions decreases from 10 to 6, regardless of the hydrocarbon chain length. Conversely, dithiophosphinate and hydroxamic acids present greater chemical stability, although they form micelles at a certain concentration (CMC), a phenomenon that is not observed with xanthates. By not hydrolyzing, oxidizing, or decomposing into other chemical species, SDIBDTPI, BHA, and OHA may be considered environmentally friendly reagents. In the above context, it is important to promote the adoption of these collectors in mineral processing.

Duddingtonia flagrans is a biological alternative to the use of anthelmintic drugs in ruminants. This fungus must be ingested by the animal, pass through the cavities of the digestive tract and reach the feces where it develops traps that capture the nematodes. The severe conditions encountered in this process negatively affect the fungus, which is reflected in the low recovery rates compared to the amount administered. The aim of this study was to evaluate independently the in vitro effect of typical physical and chemical conditions of the gastrointestinal cavities of ruminants on the concentration, viability, and the in vitro nematode predatory ability of the chlamydospores of D. flagrans. The factors evaluated individually were pH (2, 6, and 8), temperature (28 ± 2°C and 39 ± 2°C), exposure to artificial saliva, and milling. The results showed that the concentration and viability of D. flagrans were not affected by the action of pH, temperature, milling, or exposure to artificial saliva. Regarding the in vitro nematode predatory ability, a reduction was observed after the milling process and the exposure for 24 h at different pH.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of allopathic and complementary medicine use for preventing the infection with SARS-CoV-2 in Mexico. A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted using an online questionnaire among general adult population (n = 16,724) of the 32 Mexican states from March to November 2020. METHODS: The factors associated with the use, self-medication practice, and adverse reactions due the consumption of allopathic and complementary medicine to prevent infection with SARS-CoV-2 virus were assessed using a structured questionnaire. The suspected adverse reactions associated with the use of drugs or complementary medicine were reported. RESULTS: The prevalence (42.9%) of allopathic and/or complementary medicine use for preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection was mainly associated with unemployment [OR:2.026 (1.722-2.283)]. Acetaminophen (n = 2272) and vitamin C (n = 3252) were the main allopathic and complementary medicine products used to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection, respectively. The prevalence of self-medication and adverse reactions was 35.3% and 4.8%, respectively. Self-medication [OR:1.930 (1.633-2.282)] and adverse reactions [OR:2.603 (2.015-3.363)] were mainly associated with individuals of low socioeconomic status. Hydroxychloroquine (21.2%) and chloroquine (15.2%) showed the highest prevalence of adverse reactions, which were mainly related to gastrointestinal disorders. CONCLUSION: The use of medications and complementary medicine to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection is prevalent (almost one-half of the respondents) among Mexican population, and it is mainly associated with unemployment. Self-medication and the adverse reactions derived from self-medication are also prevalent and seem to be influenced by low socioeconomic status.

The use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) is increasingly meaningful for the development of more environmentally friendly agricultural practices. However, often the PGPR strains selected in the laboratory fail to confer the expected beneficial effects when evaluated in plant experiments. Insufficient rhizosphere colonization is pointed out as one of the causes. With the aim of minimizing this inconsistency, we propose that besides studying plant growth promotion traits (PGP), the screening strategy should include evaluation of the microbial phenotypes required for colonization and persistence. As a model, we carried out this strategy in three Rhizobium sp. strains that showed phosphorus solubilization ability and production of siderophores. All strains displayed colonization phenotypes like surface spreading, resistance to hydrogen peroxide, and formed biofilms. Regarding their ability to persist, biofilm formation was observed to be influenced by pH and the phosphorus nutrient provided in the growth media. Differences in the competence of the strains to use several carbon substrates were also detected. As part of our framework, we compared the phenotypic characteristics of the strains in a quantitative manner. The data analysis was integrated using a multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA). All our results were scored, weighted, and grouped as relevant for PGP, colonization, or persistence. MCDA demonstrated that, when the phenotypes related to PGP and colonization are weighted over those for persistence, strain B02 performs better than the other two Rhizobium sp. strains. The use of our framework could assist the selection of more competent strains to be tested in greenhouse and field trials.IMPORTANCE Numerous plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have been inoculated into the soil with the aim of improving the supply of nutrients to crop plants and decreasing the requirement of chemical fertilizers. However, sometimes these microbes fail to competitively colonize the plant roots and rhizosphere. Hence, the plant growth promotion effect is not observed. Here, we describe a new screening strategy aiming at the selection of more competent PGPR. We evaluated bacterial phenotypes related to plant growth promotion, colonization, and persistence. Our results demonstrated that despite the fact that our Rhizobium sp. strains successfully solubilized phosphorus and produced siderophores, their abilities to spread over surfaces, resist hydrogen peroxide, and form biofilms varied. Additionally, a multicriteria decision analysis was used to analyze the data that originated from bacterial physiological characterizations. This analysis allowed us to innovatively evaluate each strain as a whole and compare the performances of the strains under hypothetical scenarios of bacterial-trait requirements.

Poor reproducibility in scoring antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR) using the Banff criteria might limit the use of histology in clinical trials. We evaluated the reproducibility of Banff scoring of 67 biopsies by six renal pathologists at three institutions. Agreement by any two pathologists was poor: 44.8-65.7% for glomerulitis, 44.8-67.2% for peritubular capillaritis, and 53.7-80.6% for chronic glomerulopathy (cg). All pathologists agreed on cg0 (n = 20) and cg3 (n = 9) cases, however, many disagreed on scores of cg1 or cg2. The range for the incidence of composite diagnoses by individual pathologists was: 16.4-22.4% for no ABMR; 17.9-47.8% for active ABMR; and 35.8-59.7% for chronic, active antibody-mediated rejection (cABMR). A "majority rules" approach was then tested in which the scores of three pathologists were used to reach an agreement. This increased consensus both for individual scores (ex. 67.2-77.6% for cg) and for composite diagnoses (ex. 74.6-86.6% cABMR). Modeling using these results showed that differences in individual scoring could affect the outcome assessment in a mock study of cABMR. We conclude that the Banff schema has high variability and a majority rules approach could be used to adjudicate differences between pathologists and reduce variability in scoring in clinical trials.

Trichomonas vaginalis is an extracellular parasite that colonizes the human urogenital tract leading to trichomoniasis, the most common sexually-transmitted non-viral disease worldwide. The immune response plays a critical role in the host defense against this parasite. Trichomonas' DNA contains unmethylated CpG motifs (CpGDNA) that in other microorganisms act as modulators of the immune response. However, the molecular mechanisms responsible for CpGDNA immune modulation are still unclear. As macrophages participate in the first line of defense against infection, we investigated the type of immune response of murine macrophages to T. vaginalis DNA (TvDNA). We observed high expression of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-12p40 in macrophages stimulated with TvDNA. In contrast, the anti-inflammatory response, assessed by IL-10 and IL-13 mRNA expression was delayed. This suggests that the immune response induced by TvDNA is modulated through cytokine production, mediated partly by NADPH-oxidase activity, as TvDNA induced reactive species of oxygen production and a rounded morphology in macrophages indicative of an M1 phenotype. Furthermore, infected mice pretreated with TvDNA displayed persistent vulvar inflammation and decreased parasite viability consistent with higher proinflammatory cytokine levels during infection compared to untreated mice. Overall, our findings suggest that TvDNA pretreatment modulates the immune response favouring parasite elimination.

Gymnosperma glutinosum (Spreng) Less (Asteraceae) is a shrub used in traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammatory and renal diseases. The ent-dihydrotucumanoic acid (DTA) is a diterpene obtained from G. glutinosum. This study evaluated the antioxidant, genotoxic, and diuretic properties of DTA, as well as its in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory actions. The antioxidant actions of DTA were assessed with the 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays, the genotoxic action was assessed with the comet assay, and the diuretic effects of DTA were assessed using metabolic cages. The anti-inflammatory actions were evaluated using primary murine peritoneal macrophages stimulated with LPS and the λ-carrageenan-induced hind paw edema test. DTA lacked antioxidant (IC50 > 25,000 µg/mL) activity in the ABTS, FRAP, and DPPH assays. DTA at 500-1,000 µg/mL showed moderate genotoxicity. In LPS-stimulated macrophages, DTA showed IC50 values of 74.85 µg/mL (TNF-α) and 58.12 µg/mL (NO), whereas the maximum inhibition of IL-6 (24%) and IL-1ß (36%) was recorded at 200 µg/mL. DTA induced in vivo anti-inflammatory effects with ED50 = 124.3 mg/kg. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of DTA seems to be associated with the decrease in the release of TNF-α and NO. DTA promoted the excretion of urine (ED50 = 86.9 mg/kg), Na+ (ED50 = 66.7 mg/kg), and K+ (ED50 = 8.6 mg/kg). The coadministration of DTA with L-NAME decreased the urinary excretion shown by DTA alone. Therefore, the diuretic activity is probably associated with the participation of nitric oxide synthase. In conclusion, DTA exerted anti-inflammatory and diuretic effects, but lacked antioxidant effects.

The present study aims to evaluate the antiarthritic activity of diacetylcurcumin (DAC), a synthetic derivative where the free phenolic groups of curcumin are derivatized by acetylation, thereby conferring greater lipophilicity to the parent molecule and partially overcoming the limited systemic bioavailability of curcumin. Antiarthritic activity was evaluated on a Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA)-induced murine model of arthritis. Oral administration of DAC (60 and 120 mg/kg) resulted in a significant inhibition of inflammation in the acute and chronic phases, respectively, demonstrating an improved and sustained anti-inflammatory effect, comparable to that of curcumin (150 mg/kg) in the chronic stage at a lower dose. Phenylbutazone (80 mg/kg) was used as a reference drug. The pharmacological consequence of DAC or curcumin treatment is the prevention of secondary lesions commonly associated with this biological model.

Self-medication during pregnancy represents a serious threat for mother and child health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and the factors associated with self-medication among Mexican women living in the central region of Mexico. This is a descriptive interview-study of 1798 pregnant women or women who were pregnant no more than 3 years ago, when the interview was carried out. Data analysis was carried out with chi-square analysis and odds ratio. The prevalence of self-medication (allopathic drugs, medicinal plants, and other products, including vitamins, food supplements, among others) was 21.9%. The factors associated (p < 0.05) with self-medication were: higher education (college and postgraduate), smoking, and consumption of alcohol. Smoking was the strongest factor (OR: 2.536; 1.46-4.42) associated to self-medication during pregnancy, followed by consumption of alcohol (OR: 2.06; 1.38-3.08), and higher education (OR: 1.607; 1.18-2.19). Medicinal plant consumption was associated with nausea, constipation, migraine, and cold (p < 0.05), whereas he self-medication of allopathy was associated with gastritis and migraine (p < 0.05). Self-medication was influenced mainly by a relative or friend, who recommended the use of herbal medicine/allopathic medication. Two of the most common medicinal plants (arnica and ruda) here informed are reported to induce abortion or toxicity during pregnancy. The findings showed that self-medication (medicinal plants and allopathic medication) is a common practice among pregnant women from central Mexico. Adequate counselling of pregnant women by healthcare professionals about the potential risks of self-medication with herbal medicine and allopathic drugs during pregnancy is strongly warranted.

Antibiotics are increasingly being used in human and veterinary medicine, as well as pest control in agriculture. Recently, their emergence in the aquatic environment has become a global concern. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of streptomycin on growth and photosynthetic activity of Chlorella vulgaris after 72h exposure. We found that growth, photosynthetic activity and the content of the D1 protein of photosystem II decreased. Analysis of chlorophyll a fluorescence emission shows a reduction in the energy transfer between the antenna complex and reaction center. Also the activity of the oxygen evolution complex and electron flow between QA and QB were significantly reduced; in contrast, we found an increase in the reduction rate of the acceptor side of photosystem I. The foregoing can be attributed to the inhibition of the synthesis of the D1 protein and perhaps other coded chloroplast proteins that are part of the electron transport chain which are essential for the transformation of solar energy in the photosystems. We conclude that micromolar concentrations of streptomycin can affect growth and photosynthetic activity of Chlorella vulgaris. The accumulation of antibiotics in the environment can become an ecological problem for primary producers in the aquatic environment.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Pupil size evaluation using clinical examination may be important for detecting and monitoring individuals at risk of neurotoxic effects from chemical exposure, as it may enable early intervention and the implementation of preventive measures. BACKGROUND: This work aimed to investigate the association between pesticide exposure and pupil size. Pupil size is regulated by muscarinic and nicotinic receptors, and it is well-established that common pesticide chemicals disrupt this regulation. METHODS: Twenty agricultural workers exposed to pesticides, and twenty participants not exposed, underwent visual screening, and pupil size evaluation under mesopic and photopic conditions. Additionally, signs of neurotoxicity and pesticide exposure in both groups were evaluated using the modified version of the neurotoxic symptoms questionnaire (Q16) and measuring cholinesterase (AChE) levels in blood, respectively. RESULTS: Agricultural workers exposed to pesticides had a score indicating medium-high level of neurotoxicity (49.85 (SD ± 8.94)) which was significantly higher (t (36) = 7.659, p ≤ 0.0001) than non-exposed participants who had low levels of neurotoxicity (27.25 SD ± 8.86). There was a significant difference in pupil size (mm) under mesopic (t (19) 4.42 p = 0.003) and scotopic (t (19) 4.63, p = 0.0002) conditions between the two groups. Additionally, there was a significant difference in AChE blood levels (t (19) 2.94 p = 0.008) between exposed and non-exposed participants, indicating that exposed workers had low levels of this enzyme (average exposed group 3381 U/L (SD ± 1306)) compared to the non-exposed group (average non-exposed group 4765 U/L (SD ± 1300)). A significant negative correlation between AChE levels, years of exposure, and pupil size was found. The latter finding importantly showed that smaller pupils are associated with the accumulation of acetylcholine or a decrease in the activity of the enzyme AChE. CONCLUSION: Pupil size of agricultural workers exposed to pesticides can be abnormal and is associated with neurotoxicity as indicated by symptomatology and cholinesterase levels. Evaluation of pupil size may be useful for clinically detecting neurotoxicity.

This study aimed to analyze the effect of nutritional supplements on improving conidia production of Metarhizium rileyi Nm017 at laboratory scale (yields of conidia/substrate and biomass/substrate, and substrate consumption). Also, the influence on quality parameters were evaluated (germination at 36 and 48 h, enzymatic activity, and insecticidal activity on Helicoverpa zea). Six treatments (T1-T6) were assessed and all of them reached maximum conidia concentration after 7 days fermentation, a feasible production timetable. Yields from treatment T6 (yeast extract + V8 juice) were 1.5-threefold higher than the other treatments. Conidia from T6 reached germinations of 56% and 12% at 36 and 48 h, respectively, higher than T1 (without supplements), which had the lowest values found. M. rileyi conidia obtained from treatment T6 had the highest enzymatic activity (0.45 U chitinase g-1, 0.28 U lipase g-1, and 1.29 U protease g-1). However, treatments with the highest conidia yields and enzymatic activity were not positively correlated to the efficacy against H. zea. When M. rileyi was produced on T5 (yeast hydrolysate + V8 juice), conidia were 35% more virulent than treatment T6. The findings evidenced the noticeable impact of nutritional substrate amended for conidia production and quality. This work showed the relevance of insecticidal activity assessment as a selection criterion in the mass production development of a biocontrol agent.

Stanhopea tigrina Bateman ex Lindl. (Orchidaceae) is an orchid endemic to Mexico, known as "Calavera" or "calaverita", in the Huasteca Potosina (central region of Mexico). This plant species is used for the folk treatment of mental disorders and urological kidney disorders, according to the ethnomedicinal information obtained in this study. Ethanolic extracts of leaves (HE) and pseudobulb (PE) were obtained by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to carry out the chemical characterization of HE and PE. The pharmacological effects (antioxidant, diuretic, anxiolytic, locomotor, hypnotic, and sedative) of HE and PE were evaluated. The possible mechanism of action of the anxiolytic-like activity induced by HE was assessed using inhibitors of the GABAergic, adrenergic, and serotonergic systems. The possible mechanism of the diuretic action of HE was assessed using prostaglandin inhibitory antagonists and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) blockers. HE at 50 and 100 mg/kg exerted anxiolytic-like activity without inducing hypnosis or sedation. Flumazenil, prazosin, and ketanserin inhibited the anxiolytic-like activity shown by HE, which suggests the participation of GABA, α1-adrenergic receptors, and 5-HT2 receptors, respectively. The diuretic effect was reversed by the non-selective NOS inhibitor L-NAME, which caused the reduction in nitric oxide (NO). These results demonstrate that the ethanolic extract of S. tigrina leaves exhibited anxiolytic-like activity and diuretic effects without inducing hypnosis or sedation. This work validates the medicinal uses of this orchid species.

To determine whether exposure to occupational levels of agrochemicals is associated with a range of low- (contrast and colour) and higher-level visual functions, particularly the detection of global form and motion coherence. We compared the performance of workers exposed to occupational levels of pesticides and non-exposed individuals on visual tasks that measured colour discrimination (Farnsworth Munsell 100 and Lanthony D15 desaturated) and the contrast sensitivity function (1-16 cpd). Global form and motion detection thresholds were measured using Glass-pattern and global dot motion stimuli. Neurotoxicity symptoms and biological markers associated with pesticide exposure were quantified using the Q16 modified questionnaire and via tests for levels of acetylcholinesterase in blood and substance P from the tear film, respectively. Workers exposed to pesticides had significantly more neurotoxic symptoms than non-exposed workers. No significant difference between groups for acetylcholinesterase levels was found, but there was a significant group difference in Substance P. The exposed group also had significantly poorer contrast sensitivity, colour discrimination and higher coherence detection thresholds for global form and motion perception. Exposure to occupational levels of agrochemicals in workers with signs of neurotoxicity is associated with low and high visual perception deficits.
